It’s Christmas - and then 2012

N

ovember was another month with sun although plenty of rain too including the day when the heavens opened and Garrucha and Mojácar got severely flooded. The snow that fell in many parts of Almería province on November 28th, 2009, certainly hasn’t been repeated since. Sierra Nevada has opened for the winter season with a reasonable amount of snow, and sighs of relief. The National holidays on December 6th and 8th, with the days between often tacked on for a last holiday before Christmas, saw an influx of some tourists, but not of course in the numbers everyone was hoping for. In the elections on November 20th, the ‘Partido Popular’ (Conservative party) swept into power dramatically. Certainly the floating voters, if not many more, decided that a change of government was due, and it was unlikely to be any worse, and it might even be better- perhaps. Mariano Rajoy is therefore the new Prime Minister elect who can take office from December 20th. As in the UK, he goes to the Palace first, and this date was scheduled initially to be December 22nd. It was decided that this was not a good day, as it is the date of the enormous Christmas lottery, known as “El Gordo”. Rajoy is therefore going on the 21st and will announce his new government probably on the 23rd, just before Christmas. Everybody in Spain is waiting with bated breath to see what reforms he proposes. He has to decide several New Year, watching the clock in Plaza del Sol

domestic policy changes before the end of the year, never mind the Euro zone problems. There are still a few concerts and exhibitions in the pipeline for December, but it is evident that town hall cuts have affected many budgets. We feature theses in our “What’s On” section, including the Rose Singers Annual Christmas concert. There is also a “tapas” trail in the town and playa of Vera with substantial prizes, until December 18th. Street decorations are going up, even in El Ejido where it was decided that the 140,000 euros electricity bill was too much. Traders in the city centre said they would connect the lights to their own premises and at least there would be something to see. The usual messages are “Felíz Navidad” (Happy Christmas) or “Felices Fiestas” (Happy Fiestas-Christmas and New Year). The “Belénes” (Christmas Nativity displays) are also being built, often very elaborate, and well worth a visit. Christmas Eve is called “Noche Buena”, a time for a family gathering and an evening meal. People working away from their family town or village try and return for this event, but Christmas day, apart from the religious services, is not a really big fiesta day. It has been known for the Spanish electricity or water supply companies to carry out essential maintenance on Christmas Day, with consequent cuts in the services! New Year’s Eve, “Noche Vieja”, sees the traditional celebrations at midnight when one grape should be eaten at every stroke of the reference clock in Madrid, swilled down with the excellent “Cava” (Spanish equivalent of French Champagne). January 5th, twelfth night, is the eve of “El Día de Los Reyes Magos”, “Three Kings”, and there are many processions with a carnival atmosphere. Children receive presents on January 6th and many will have sent a letter to their favourite King. Spanish television channels show processions in all the major cities both on the evening of January 5th and then on January 6th. So to all our reader and advertisers, “Felices Fiestas”!

Focus on Local News Roquetas Masts After a unanimous vote during November, Roquetas de Mar became one of the first town halls in Almería province to pass stringent regulations regarding telecommunication equipment. The new bye laws prohibit such equipment and masts from within 200 metres of a school, hospital or public park. As well as this limit, equipment cannot be put on buildings that are less than 4 storeys in height, nor on buildings that have cultural status. Equipment already in place has to be moved within 3 years and the new site has to comply with all the new restrictions. Scientists have never agreed that the microwave emissions from telecommunication equipment are responsible for diseases such as cancer, but there is a large body of public concern regarding such installations. New Jehovah’s Witness Building Antas now has the fourth Jehovah’s Witness meeting room in Almería province with the three others in Almería City, Roquetas and Noria. After the structure had been completed by an outside builder, 400 volunteers from as far as Jaén and Granada, together with others from Almería province, spent three weekends completing the building. Plasterers, tilers, electricians, carpenters and painters were organized by a group of between 6 and 8 project managers. No volunteer was required to work more than the 6 days of the 3 weekends and this technique, started in 1992, has never recorded an accident for any of the workers. The volunteer workers are included in a list of Jehovah’s witness followers with building type skills, who are prepared to work on similar projects. Nijar Golf Project The mayor of Nijar, Antonio Jesús Rodríguez, has announced that the Nijar council has approved the outline planning consent for a golf complex including 2,500 hotel occupants and 1,000 new dwellings. The project, on the edge of the Cabo de Gata National park, was approved in principle

by the Junta de Andalucía last March. The mayor considers that Nijar has an important tourism base and these plans will ensure more visitors once the present crisis is over. Unemployment Crisis An economic study group has published a report stating that 14% of the homes throughout Andalucía have all the family members unemployed. This figure has risen by 400% in Almería province, higher than any other province, compared to 2007 when the economic crisis started. The report states that 400,000 families are in this position throughout Andalucía with an unemployed population of 607,000 people. The provinces of Córdoba and Málaga are almost as bad as Almería, whilst Cádiz and Seville have an increase of just over 200% in the number of homes with complete unemployment.

The ‘Helimer 207’ The commercial pilot association in Spain has complained that the investigation into the fatal crash of the ‘Helimer 207’ helicopter in January 2010 is still not complete. The helicopter was returning from a normal training exercise in good weather just off the Almería coast when it apparently flew into the sea killing three of the four crew. The pilot association complains that whilst all the data surrounding the crash had been obtained by the Spanish aviation accident authority, the court looking into the accident was waiting for official reports from outside experts.

Focus on Local News continued At present the belief is that the pilot of the Helimer 207 became disorientated as the helicopter was proceeding quite normally and conversation was perfectly normal in the cockpit. The salvage operation both to recover the bodies of the dead crew, and the helicopter, was one of the most complex undertakings ever mounted by Spanish rescue services. Car Purchases Almería province purchasers of semi-new or second hand cars amount to 72% of the market. This is slightly higher than the average of 70% for Andalucía and the average of 66% for all of Spain. Buyers of second hand cars are described as being unemployed, retired or just hard up. The profile of new car purchasers is stated to be mostly persons under the age of 30. Manufacturers of new vehicles such as ‘Kia’ still manage to attract buyers who are tempted by the 7 year guarantee. The motor trade in general hopes that the new Spanish government will re-introduce the previous incentives for new purchasers and by doing so increase sales of new vehicles. Motorway Bids Three consortiums of a total of 15 companies have put in bids for the Purchena to A-7 motorway. The estimated project price is 160 million euros to be financed by a joint private and state enterprise. It is anticipated that this will involve a direct and indirect labour force of 2,400. It is expected that the project will be licensed by the end of 2011 with work starting in the last six months of 2012. This 16 kilometer stretch is part of the 25 km motorway starting at Fines. The method of finance is that the consortium given the work will raise the finance needed to execute the project and the Junta de Andalucía make stage payments once the motorway is finished. This means that the money needed to pay for the work is not a feature of the Junta de Andalucía budget until the work is completed. This motorway, known as the Almanzora motorway, or locally as the “marble motorway”, totals 90 kms from Baza

to Huércal-Overa, and will link in 28 municipalities with 70,000 inhabitants. Once completed, this motorway will be a strategic link for the marble industry, joining the Levante A-7 motorway with the A-92 Almería to Granada motorway.

Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia

Royal Approval The Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia travelled to the UK during November to help promote Spain at the opening of the 32nd World Travel Market fair. This travel fair is the largest in the world and this year attracted exhibitors from 189 counties or regions. The slogan for Andalucía was, “Welcome to Andalucia, welcome home”. Tourists from the UK have increased in numbers by 8% so far in Almería in 2011 and 10% in Andalucía. Attracting UK tourists is seen as one of the most important missions. The Junta de Andalucía spent 870,000 euros on the 600 square metre stand and tourist office staff.

‘Ryanair’ Ruling A court in Málaga has agreed to rule as “abusive” the insistence that children travelling with their parents on a ‘Ryanair’ domestic flight within Spain have to have photo identity cards or passports. The law in Spain is that the “Libro de Familia”, effectively a Spanish birth certificate, is all that is required for a child under 14 to fly on a domestic flight. This is laid down in the travel conditions by ‘Aena’, the Spanish aviation authority, and published in a leaflet. In this Málaga case, a man with his own

Focus on Local News continued DNI identification booked a flight from Málaga to Valencia with his children aged 6 and 4. He presented his identity card and his “Libro de Familia” for the children, but was refused boarding without photo ID or a passport for the children. This is the third such case involving ‘Ryanair’ to come before the courts this year and all the rulings have been in favour of the parents. The judge in the Málaga case considered that the ‘Ryanair’ clauses on their web site should be entered into the National Spanish register of contract terms, as being unjust and therefore abusive as regarding the free travel of Spanish minors throughout Spain. The official registration of this ‘Ryanair’ clause being “abusive” by a Spanish court will mean that a legal precedent has been made, to be referred to in any other such claims. On the registration of the birth of a child in Spain, irrespective of the nationality of the parents, a “libro de familia” is generated. Almería Port Figures Up to the end of September, passenger figures for Almería port were down 10% on 2010. This was mostly due to much lower passenger traffic surrounding the “Ramadan” festival when thousands of passengers leave Almería port for destinations in Morocco and Africa. Figures following the next most important religious date, the “Fiesta del Cordero” on November 7th, has helped to bring the passenger traffic figures back up. The “Fiesta del Cordero” (literally the “Festival of the Sheep”), is very important to the immigrants from Magreb who return to their native country for this event. Huércal-Overa Training On November 17th, there were four major traffic accidents in Huércal-Overa. No-one was hurt however, as they were staged as a part of a combined firemen and 061 medical emergency team training day. The exercise was to show firemen how to diagnose the likely injuries to persons in a major traffic accident, and how to think about extracting them. The medical emergency teams were also shown what

equipment the fire brigades had at their disposal and how best this could be used from a health standpoint. One of the techniques taught was the disabling of airbag systems that had not gone off initially, but might do so during a patient rescue, causing injury to firemen or the emergency accident teams. Apart from the fire and accident crews, some 400 pupils from local schools watched the practice rescue operations as part of a health awareness project.

‘Rolling Stones’ Debt The new council of El Ejido are trying to recover 2.2 million euros following the cancellation of the 2006 ‘Rolling Stones’ concert cancelled when Mick Jagger had laryngitis, or Keith Richards had been injured after falling from a tree, depending on which version was the truth. El Ejido paid “Music Frog”, the organizers, 4.17 million euros to stage the concert, with the agreement that an insurance policy would pay back this amount if the concert was cancelled. Another 4.17 million euros was paid for the 2007 concert that did take place, but with 20,000 of the 60,000 expected seat sales unsold. The mayor of El Ejido, Francisco Góngora, states that this insurance policy cannot be found in the El Ejido archives, although it is thought to have been in the office of José Aleman, the person considered the “brains” behind the current corruption scandal at El Ejido. Francisco asks how any town hall could pay 4.17 million euros twice, without getting the first amount back. He puts

Focus on Local News continued this state of affairs down to the chaotic circumstances of El Ejido finance at the time. “Music Frog” is now in liquidation, so any money being reclaimed would have to come from the administrators of the bankrupt company. Francisco considers that El Ejido is legally entitled to the 2.2 million euros, but the remainder is a bad debt. Antas Lights Antas town hall is hoping to save 30,000 euros during the next year by switching off alternate lamp standards throughout the night. Ginés Pérez, the councillor for public works, started this plan at the beginning of November. Every other light in the Antas industrial park and other roads is switched off, providing there is adequate light from the remaining lamp standards. Roundabouts, crossroads and other traffic junctions have been monitored so that sufficient lights are illuminated. Ginés considers that other municipalities could try the same thing, and save considerable money off their street lighting bill, apart from reducing the night time light pollution that is a problem for the Calar Alto observatory. The Garrucha Badger A male badger somehow found his way into the middle of Garrucha recently and the ‘Seprona’ branch of the Guardia Civil police was notified. The badger was considered a hazard to pedestrians and traffic and had roamed free for several hours. It was eventually trapped and caged under a staircase in the hall of a building. The animal was pronounced to be a large male, unhurt but extremely disorientated and nervous. The ‘Seprona’ police who have the welfare of wild animal life as one of their tasks took the badger to a rural part of Vera where it was released. Macael Debts The new Partido Popular mayor of Macael claims that the previous PSOE council were not only spending beyond their budget but also employed too many people. The PP spokesman, Guillermo Casquet, states that the annual income is 3 million

euros and the debts 18 million. There are 6,000 registered inhabitants and he says that if there were no street lights, no water, no police and no town hall employees it would still take 6 years to pay off the debt. The town hall has 70 employees and there have been reductions of 15 people, followed by a further 5, but there still has to be more cuts in staff. Macael is also in the same trap as other town halls in that grants from the Junta de Andalucía for things such as employment workshops are frozen until sums of money that the Junta de Andalucía considers have to be refunded are paid back.

Arturo Grima’s demonstration

Turre Solution The mayor of Turre staged a sit-in at the Delegation of Employment in Almería City to try to unblock 316,000 euros that was due for the wages of the 36 council employees and 24 persons and staff of an employment workshop. The mayor Arturo Grima held a press conference on the steps of the building announcing his sit-in, that he kept up for 3 nights, before returning to Turre for the weekend and back to the Delegation of Employment on the following Monday. The money had been blocked because of a debt of 43,000 euros obtained by the previous council but not spent on the subject of the grant. Arturo Grima eventually reached an agreement with the Delegation that the 43,000 could be paid back in stage payments over the next 5 years, so freeing

Focus on Local News continued up the debt, and the release of the 316,000 euros. A spokesperson for the Delegation stated that a sit-in was not the right way to conduct negotiations and that Turre council had always known that the refunding of the 43,000 euros had to be made. Pensions Boost 35,000 pensioners on a minimum pension are to receive a booster payment in January 2012. This is because inflation has risen from the estimated 1% to 2.9% based on the index of prices known as the ‘IPC’, that is calculated every year during November. In the case of a pension amount of 742 euros per month, the one-off adjustment payment will work out at about 135 euros. Pensioners in general are waiting to see whether the new Spanish government will increase pensions across the board as was indicated in their electoral promises. Spanish Social Security offices that pay out pensions state that the average pension in Almería province including widow’s pensions, disability pensions and retirement pensions per month is 656 euros, 80 euros less than the average in Andalucía and 152 euros less than the average throughout Spain of 809 euros. 53,000 persons receive a retirement pension throughout Almería province for themselves and their non working spouse, and receive the sum of 742 euros per month, but with an extra payment in the summer and another before Christmas. Cabrera Complex The Spanish Ministry of Defence are preparing to install a radar and communication complex on the highest point of Cabrera, the Cerro de la Mezquita, in the Turre municipality. This peak is 960 metres above sea level and a popular spot for tourists owing to the phenomenal views. The first phase of the project is under way and involves the remaking of the access road that is budgeted at 280,000 euros. Once this is done, a 3,400 m2 platform will be created for the equipment and associated buildings at a cost of 570,000 euros. The 1986 radar and communication project called

the “Sistema de Ew Santiago” consists of 3 strategic terrestrial installations in Spain, along with air based and satellite equipment, designed to collect electronic information considered vital to the defence of Spain. The land based electronic information collection centre to be installed in Cabrera is known by the name “Scatar de Levante” and should have been completed by 2008. The Cerro de la Mezquita is privately owned, as is 90% of the Sierra Cabrera, and the landowner will receive an annual rent. The mayor of Turre, Arturo Grima, states that the town hall has been informed of the project as a courtesy, but they have no say in the matter. Licence fees for the construction were paid to Turre town hall over 12 months ago. The town hall has requested that the provision of any major electricity supply allows for extension to neighbouring properties.

Fire Figures The 2011 campaign to reduce and combat grass and forest fires finished on October 15th. The ‘Plan Infoca’ for Almería province included 12 million euros for the maintenance of fire breaks and the management of vegetation. This work was done by more than 500 operatives. The special fire service turned out on 107 occasions with 79 of the fires being grass fires contained to less than 1 hectare of land. The other 28 actions were to forest fires that burnt down 21 hectares of forest. 30% of the callouts were put down to being 12% intentional events, and the other 18%

The town of Bayárcal in the Sierra Nevada National park required visits on 19 occasions, fortunately for minor fires and a man was arrested and charged with starting almost all of these fires. Zurgena Accident The mayor of Zurgena, Francisco Ramos, was helping in the pre-election events at Zurgena when he was blown off a platform whilst putting up an election hoarding in Alfoquía. He and another party member were taken to Huércal-Overa hospital but Francisco, apart from two broken bones, had received a substantial head injury. For this reason he was helicoptered by the 061 emergency services to Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería where his head injury was pronounced as not being serious. He was allowed out of hospital before the elections took place. His helper was treated for a broken heel. Food Study Despite the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit, vegetables and cereal produce and that the Spanish population are consuming fewer calories than 20 years ago, they are fatter. These conclusions have come from a study that investigated the effects of diet on heart-related diseases. During the 90s, the average calorie intake was 250 calories more than the present intake of 2,500 per day. This is put down to the consumption of fewer fruit, vegetables or cereals and instead a higher intake of red meat, pastry and sugar drinks. The consumption of “unhealthy” items, and more time spent in front of a television or a computer games screen are given as factors leading to obesity. Despite this, cardio vascular diseases such as heart attacks are less prevalent in Spain thought to be because a generic factor is evident, possibly due to the Mediterranean diet replacing animal fat with olive oil. Nevertheless, there are 125,000 deaths every year in Spain from heart related diseases and 5 million people are admitted to hospital with these complaints. Obesity has risen by 20% in the last 20 years.

Villaricos Accident Three men were injured in an accident at the newly opened Villaricos desalination plant during the early hours of November 22nd. ‘Acuamed’ the company operating the plant stated that the men were connecting one of the reverse osmosis units when there was an unexpected release of high pressure water. The three men were taken to Huércal-Overa hospital where one of them was shortly afterwards allowed home, another was treated for a broken leg and the third man kept in an observation ward. ‘Acuamed’ stated that a review of maintenance procedures at the plant would be undertaken once the cause of the accident had been fully investigated.

Cortijo del Fraile The cortijo made famous by the Spanish poet Lorca and films, known as “El Cortijo del Fraile”, is still privately owned although subject to a designation as being part of the Almería cultural heritage. The Junta de Andalucía has been trying to make the owners carry out essential maintenance work, so far without success. The date of November 2nd, when the owners were required to submit proposals to carry out work passed without any such reaction. The Junta de Andalucía have therefore issued a legal ultimatum, requiring a project to be submitted within 2 months, that adequately covers the restoration and implementation of the work considered

Focus on Local News continued that one of the passengers from a ferry originating from the Moroccan port of Nador was wanted for Al Qaeda crimes. The man from Belgium had been sentenced to 10 years in prison in June 2010 but subsequently escaped. The Belgian authorities had issued an Interpol capture and arrest warrant that showed up in a check of his passport. The Almería port police detained the man and it is expected that he will be extradited to Belgium to serve his sentence. German Pressure The new Spanish ‘PP’ Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, is being pressurized by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, to undertake immediate reforms that will help stabilize the Spanish economy. The former Prime Minister, José Zapatero, went to the December 7th & 8th European summit meeting as Mariano Rajoy is not officially taking over until December 20th. Apart from international problems, the new ‘PP’ government will have to decide before the New Year whether to increase pensions, what to do about demands for increases in the costs of electricity and the salaries of public employees, reduced by 5% in 2010 by José Zapatero. October Tourist Crisis Figures for tourists and hotel occupancy during October in Almería province fell to numbers not experienced since 1999. Foreign tourists amounted to 14.500 people, about the same as last year, but Spanish holiday makers fell from 69,800 to 52,000. 199,000 hotel rooms were occupied compared to 278,000 in October 2010. The economic crisis and unemployment were blamed for this alarming drop in numbers. Albox Fire Station The mayor of Albox has stated that the Albox municipality can no longer solely afford to pay for the local fire station. The budget cost for 2012 amounts to 466,000 euros. The mayor considers that the local fire station serves 27 different municipalities and it is impossible for

Albox council to have to pay the complete cost. A spokesperson for the Almería county council replied that plans to turn the Albox fire service into a consortium of municipalities, in the Almanzora area, was underway, and since 2007 previous mayors had not complained. The spokesperson considered that José Garcia, the mayor, was playing “political football”!

Boxes of coins recovered from the sea bed

Spanish Treasure In May 2007, the Odyssey Marine Exploration company recovered 500,000 gold and silver coins from a sunken ship they christened “Black Swan”. The coins were flown from Gibraltar to Florida in the US on a specially chartered Boeing 757 jet. The coins actually came from a Spanish frigate “Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes”, sunk off Cádiz in 1804. Various US courts have ruled that the treasure belongs to Spain, with the latest decision on November 30th, only subject to appeal to the highest US court. The chances of overruling the latest findings are considered non-existent, and it is expected that Odyssey Exploration will have to return the coins to Spain. School Buses Inspection Guardia Civil and Local Police have been inspecting school buses recently to make sure that safety measures are being implemented. Since 2007 the buses must have seat belts for the pupils and 185 vehicles in Almería province have been inspected. The inspections revealed only minor problems with the paperwork that the buses needed.

So Now You Know... A Greenland Christmas Christmas Trees have to be imported, because no trees grow as far north as Greenland. They usually come from Denmark - Greenland has had a long historical connection with Denmark. The trees are decorated with candles, bright ornaments and sometimes small versions of sealskin breeches known as “kamiks”. Trees are traditionally decorated on the evening of 23rd December. Anther popular tradition is to put an illuminated star in windows. There are stars in most homes and in all public buildings. Because Greenland is so far north, and within the Arctic Circle, during the winter the sun doesn't ever rise!

Chinese Christmas In the People's Republic of China, December 25th is not a legal holiday. In China's special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, both former colonies of Western powers, it is however an official holiday. On the mainland, the small percentage of Chinese citizens who consider themselves Christians unofficially, and usually privately, observe Christmas. Large urban areas increasingly have commercial Christmas decorations, signs, and other symbolic items. In Hong Kong, Father Christmas is known as "Sing Daan Lou Yan" (Christmas Old Man).

Russian Christmas In the days of the Soviet Union, Christmas was not celebrated very much. New Year was the important time. Now Christmas is celebrated normally on January 7th (only a few Catholics might celebrate it on 25th December). The date is different because the Russian Orthodox Church uses the old “Julian” calendar for religious celebration days. The Orthodox Church also celebrates Advent starting on 28th November and going to the 6th January, so it’s 40 days long. The official Christmas and New Year holidays in Russia last from 31st December to 10th January.

Japanese Christmas Christmas is not widely celebrated in Japan as not many people there are Christians. Christmas in known as more of a time to spread happiness rather than a religious celebration. Christmas Eve is often celebrated more than Christmas Day. This day is thought of as a romantic day, in which couples spend time together and exchange presents. In many ways it resembles Valentines Day celebrations in the U.K. and the USA. Young couples like to go for walks to look at the Christmas lights and have a romantic meal in a restaurant booking a table on Christmas Eve can be very difficult as it's so popular!

Christmas in Canada Mummering is a tradition which takes place in the provinces of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia in small towns and villages. People dress up in costumes and knock on someone's door and say in a disguised voice, "Are there any Mummers in the night?" They sing and dance and have Christmas cake and a cup of something nice before moving on to the next house. In some places, if the house owner does not guess who the Mummers are, the host must join the Mummers in their merry-making. In some places it is now banned because people used it as an excuse for begging.

Christmas in Iceland Christmas celebrations start in Iceland at 6pm on the day known as “Yule Eve”. This is thought to have come from an Icelandic tradition, when a new day started at 6pm not midnight. Icelandic children open their presents after the evening meal. On Christmas Day, “Yule meal” is “Hangikjöt”, a leg of roast lamb. Sometimes “Rjúpa”, a sea bird known as Rock Ptarmigan, is also eaten. Another Yule meal speciality is “Laufabraud” or leaf bread. This is made of thin sheets of dough cut into delicate patterns and fried. Public entertainment is not allowed until Boxing Day.

Our Chinese Traders

T

he Chinese community has a firm foothold in Almería province as in the rest of Spain. There are thought to be 500 businesses run by Chinese immigrants who operate restaurants and the Chinese shops or bazaars that we all use, along with the Spanish population. 900 Chinese are on the ‘padrón’, the official town hall lists of residents in Almería province. Imports from China to this province were given as 36 million euros in 2010. In these times of economic hardship, some Spanish trade organizations are claiming that the shops are open at least twelve hours a day, Sundays and fiesta days, and have an unfair advantage. A survey of the Spanish views about non-Spanish traders threw up the beliefs that the Chinese don’t pay taxes, employ children in their restaurant kitchens, are controlled by Chinese mafias, their children’s toys can be lethal and the interesting observation that no Chinese are to be found in Spanish cemeteries.

70% of the Chinese people coming to Spain originate from Zhejiang province and in particular from the city of Qingtian, with 450,000 residents. Chinese shops there sell Spanish hams, Spanish olive oil and wines, and Spanish or Italian language schools flourish. Intermixing with Chinese workers from Spain who go back to see family or friends has resulted in Spanish being one of the main languages after English. Other courses sought after are commerce, and restaurant management. Chinese agricultural growers have started coming to Almería province to learn the techniques of biological control instead of pesticides and the management of large growing areas.

It is true that consumer bodies and trading standards inspectors sometimes find children’s toys that do not meet normal safety regulations, but this applies to imports from other countries such as Taiwan. Most Chinese workers are registered with the Spanish Social Security and therefore pay taxes, and food inspectors find no evidence that children are employed in kitchens. There are regulations concerning opening hours, one of them being that only convenience shops under 300m2 can open when they like, not the large premises that Chinese traders often run. In areas designated as tourist resorts, Sunday trading is allowed but nevertheless, shop inspectors do fine Chinese traders for breaches of opening hour regulations.

The second request is that if a family decide to have a pet, with parents not just responding to pressure from children, a pet should be adopted from the ‘Centro Zoosanitario’ or another animal protection society. Recently Mojácar town hall gave them a grant of 2,000 euros, and then the use of an office/ charity fundraising premises free. They appreciate good food and wines, are good tippers or even make a small gift if they think they have received good service in a hotel. They, of course, want to spend time on a good beach in the summer, but also appreciate culture and go on the usual tourist trails to famous Spanish cultural gems. Felipe Rigat, owner of the ‘Hotel Rigat’ on the Costa Blanca, states that the Russians like a good party atmosphere and are as noisy as the Spanish! They want to stay in 4* or 5* hotels and also want to experience the typical Spanish foods and wines. If they hire cars they go for a top brand. Juan Molas from the Association of Spanish Hoteliers believes that having started to come to Spain in large

You can always try “Gavareeteh medlenie” that means “Can you speak a little slower”, until we have all perfected our Russian!

ecember 22nd is a big date in Spain as the Christmas lottery is drawn during the morning. The lottery is known as “El Gordo” (literally the “fat one”, but really it means the “big one”). “El Gordo” is the first prize, not strictly applying to the other prizes, but if someone asks you if you won anything on “El Gordo” they mean any of nearly two thousand prizes. It is run by the Spanish state and is the biggest world lottery in prize money. In 2011 it totals 2,520 million euros.

Many bars, restaurants, football clubs and associations sell the lottery tickets locally, in which case you will be asked for 23 euros as the 3 euros “commission” is for the bar or association. The average money spent on lottery tickets for this Christmas lottery in 2010 was over 70 euros per head of population, or 3.6 billion euros in total!

This Spanish Christmas draw does not work anything like a "normal" lotto draw. Tickets have 5 numbers from 00000 to 99999, increased this year from 84999, the highest number in 2010, as the prizes have been increased for 2011, not the ticket price. If you pay 20 euros for a ticket at an official lottery office it will have come off a sheet of ten, and is therefore called “un décimo”, a tenth of the sheet costing 200 euros in total. But, there are 195 sheets of ten tickets with the same number, so 1,950 “décimo” tickets. When the winning ticket numbers are drawn, and if all the tickets with that number have been purchased, 1,950 people with one “décimo” have won a prize. In 2011, the amount of prize money for “El Gordo” is 400,000 euros per “décimo”, instead of 300,000 euros in 2010. The second prize winning number is for 125,000 euros per “décimo”, increased from 100,000. There is one number for the third prize of 50,000 euros, 2 numbers for the fourth prize of 20,000 euros each, and 8 numbers for the fifth prize of 5,000 euros. Felipe had always been thought to lack lustre but Letizia was well known to the Spanish people as she was on the forefront of television journalism. She was attractive, at ease with all strata of society and the public, and has now become a fashion icon to rival Carla Bruñí. The 9th Festival “Flamenco in Almería” is on December 17th at 9pm in the Teatro Apolo, Almería city with Manuela Cordero and Antonio Carrión, María José Pérez and Montse Pérez. Entrance is free. The 2011 Christmas Carol concert takes place on Sunday, December 18th at 11am in the Auditorio Municipal Maestro Padilla, Almería city. Entrance is free with tickets available from normal outlets. David Bisbal is in concert in El Ejido on January 20th, 2012, to mark the 4th anniversary of the opening of the Teatro Auditorio. Danny had recently passed his driving test and decided to ask his clergyman father if there was any chance of him getting a car for Christmas which was yet some months away. 'Okay,' said his father, 'I tell you what I'll do. If you can get your 'A' level grades up to 'A's and 'B's, study your bible and get your hair cut, I'll consider the matter very seriously.'

It was just before Christmas and the magistrate was in a happy mood. He asked the prisoner who was in the dock, 'What are you charged with?' The prisoner replied, 'Doing my Christmas shopping too early.' 'That's no crime', said the magistrate. 'Just how early were you doing this shopping?' 'Before the shop opened,’ answered the prisoner.

A couple of months later Danny went back to his father who said, 'I'm really impressed by your commitment to your studies. Your grades are excellent and the work you have put into your bible studies is very encouraging. However, I have to say I'm very disappointed that you haven't had your hair cut yet.

The Hard Test One year, Father Christmas is forced to have an official from the Aviation Authority check his sleigh to make sure it’s airworthy. The official checks out the sleigh on the ground then sits beside Father Christmas for a test flight. Suddenly Father Christmas notices the official has a revolver. ‘What’s that for?’ he asks. ‘You’re not a hijacker are you?’ ‘No,’ replies the official. ‘But we have to see how you handle this craft when you lose an engine on take-off.’

A Christmas Gift A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, "I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles." "She did," he replied. "But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?"

...and next... How Many Reindeer? Did you know that according to the song, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer", Santa has twelve reindeer? Sure, in the introduction it goes "There's Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen..." That makes eight reindeer. Then there's Rudolph, of course, so that makes nine. Then there's Olive. You know, "Olive the other reindeer used to laugh..." That makes ten. The eleventh is Howe. You know, "Then Howe the reindeer loved him..." Eleven reindeer. Oh, and number 12? That's Andy! "Andy shouted out with glee." The proof is in the song!

Fish & Game Report According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeers, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. OBVIOUS: ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost. Oh No! Did you know that Santa's not allowed to go down chimneys any more? It was declared unsafe by the Elf & Safety Committee. Goofy George As goofy George had a habit of giving his wife strange Christmas gifts, she was not surprised when he came one night carrying a tiny, branchless tree. Attached to a lone limb was a shotgun shell. "All right, George," said his wife, truly stumped this time. "What is it?" "Why, honey." George smiled, "it's a cartridge in a bare tree."

Mistletoe In the week before Christmas, a pretty girl sauntered up to the curtain counter, and was trying to decide which of the many types of tinsel she would buy. Finally, she made her choice and asked the spotty youth who was manning the fabric section, 'How much is this gold tinsel garland, please?' The spotty youth pointed to the Christmas mistletoe above the counter and said, 'This week we have a special offer, just one kiss per metre'. 'Wow, that's great,’ she said, 'I'll take 12 metres'. With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the boy measured out the tinsel, wrapped up the garland, and gave it to her. She then called to an old man who had been browsing through the Christmas trees and said, 'My Grandpa will settle the bill.' Sleigh Test I remember when Father Christmas first passed his sleigh-driving test. He came skidding down in front of the toy factory. 'Have you passed?' I asked. Father Christmas pointed proudly to the front of the sleigh. 'See for yourself!' he called proudly. 'No-el plates!'
