It’s Spring... and Easter!

pring officially started in mainland Spain on March 20th at three minutes before 6pm, in case you missed it. The immediate weather forecast was a drop in temperatures! For Christians world wide, Eastertide is a very important and solemn period before Easter Sunday and the resurrection. Many religious processions start off from the rarely opened large doors of the churches where elaborate statues start a journey through the streets. Almería city has many such processions and as many as thirty or forty men carry the largest ones, sometimes from underneath with only the bottoms of trousers and shoes visible. To take part in a procession and carry the statue is considered a high honour. Easter Thursday (Maundy Thursday in the UK), and Good Friday are both full fiestas days in Andalucía, with the consequent shutting of town halls, banks and many offices.

of ex-pats. Mojácar is not well known for hosting similar events, but the town hall has opened a municipal bowling green and facilities alongside the Marina Mar hotel at Marina de la Torre. Unfortunately the pushing through by the town council of a 1,000 or 500 euros bonus for all council employees totalling 139,000 euros has left a sour taste. All the opposition councillors walked out in protest from the council meeting, stating that it was completely inappropriate and unjustified, particularly in these difficult economic times for all inhabitants. 2,000 young persons will arrive in Mojácar between April 10th-13th for a “Spring Break Festival” organised by the Pueblo Indalo. Town halls such as Huércal-Overa are very dynamic in organizing events to encourage tourists, as well as integrating the UK ex-pat population. They recently opened their permanent motor-home site, and put on a Spanish and English “traditions” event where typical foods and customs were featured from both countries. There is another original English language film being shown on April 8th, the last of six such films. From April 5th -7th there is a large gastronomy event entitled “Degustho” at the sports pavillion, designed to feature the very best of the foods and produce “Made in Almería”. Six chefs from restaurants that have a Michelin star will be there, including two from Almería, a “Mini Gourmet” section for children and a “Street of Tapas”.

Some beach bars have now already opened or will be open in the next few days. Their special attraction of course is their close proximity to the beach, suitable for all ages. Sunny days are imperative for whiling away time in such establishments and the owners watch the sky anxiously, for winds, clouds, or rain. Often prices may be a fraction above normal, but the months when they can open are limited. For many beach bar owners the first question for anyone seeking work with them is, “How many Albox are also staging a “Shopping Festival” in the languages do you speak?” Ideally a minimum of streets on April 5th and 6th. Focus on Local News More Room The modernization and creation of new cells is now complete at El Acebuche prison, alongside the A-7 motorway going towards Almería. The work has cost 7.5 million euros, and gives an additional 152 double cells in four modules. The central control room has also been modernized along with the medical centre and the access road. A new warehouse for supplies and better kitchen facilities complete the renovation. All the work is contained within the original boundary walls. The building work presented special problems owing to the security considerations and extension of existing areas without any prison breakouts. The prison has a wide range of inmates including some “ETA” terrorists and high profile prisoners in maximum security areas. “The Book of Exodus” Figures relating to the filming of “The book of Exodus” reveal that throughout Spain some 3,600 people obtained some work. Apart from the extras and other employment, 30% of those engaged were set builders. The total cost of vehicle hire and fuel is calculated as nearly 2.5 million euros. In Almería province there were 16,000 nights stay in hotels or rented apartments totalling approximately 2 million euros. The Almería and Andalucía Film Commissions say that there has been a renewed interest from other film makers since “The Book of Exodus” was filmed. Some Russian film makers have had discussions, and were amazed to learn that some “Dr. Zhivago” scenes were shot in Almería province. There is to be a major cine-tourism route set up to start by this December, coinciding with the release of the Ridley Scott film. This year is also the 50th anniversary of Sergio Leone filming “A Fistful of Dollars” at Tabernas. A documentary dealing with film making in Andalucía entitled “Shooting in Andalucía” is to be sent to people involved in the International film industry. “Rainbow Experience” The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) has given the green light for a gay hotel to be built in Canjáyar in the Almería Alpujarra region. This is the first such hotel in the

province. The building will consist of three linked rustic style buildings with a capacity for twenty guests. It is intended to attract wealthy “exclusive” clients and each of the three buildings will have their own dining room, kitchen and spa area. The promoter, “Rainbow Experience”, hopes to open the hotel within fifteen months of the building licence being approved. It is stated that there is a great demand for this type of accommodation and the hotel will attract many bookings, filling a hole in the market.

Trouble At Calar Alto The astronomy centre Calar Alto near Tabernas in Almería province is one of the most famous observatories in the world. Their largest telescope that has a 3.5 metre diameter mirror is the largest in Europe, and has been responsible for various enormously important discoveries. It is run by a partnership of German astrologers from The Max Planck Institute and Spanish ones. Cuts in funding have been a problem since 2012 when more than 50% of the budget was pruned. The Junta de Andalucía promised an injection of cash during 2013, but so far none has been forthcoming. New cuts in funding are now threatened and 20% of the employees and scientists will be affected. The remote location has a kitchen with three employees and the proposal is that the kitchen shuts, along with the five cleaners being made redundant, or a part time proposal with some redundancy. Salary cuts of 35% or more are being proposed for the scientists. The Director of the centre since only last June, has announced he is resigning.

Focus on Local News Gas Ring Turned Off Following many complaints from 'Repsol', the Spanish domestic gas company, National police have closed down a large number of companies fraudulently claiming to be authorized official gas inspectors. The main headquarters was in Málaga, with one company based in Almería city. Twelve people considered the masterminds have been arrested and sixty companies throughout Spain shut down. 227 bank accounts have been frozen and the money confiscated, along with luxury vehicles. The fraudulent inspectors preyed on elderly, disabled, or vulnerable people, often threatening that if an inspection was not carried out their gas bottles would be removed. The amount charged for remedial work that was claimed to be necessary ranged from 50 to 390 euros, with respect to 2,000 official complaints. In some cases the exorbitant “repairs” were considered unsafe. Apart from the customer fraud the companies owe the Social Security department four million euros.

Mojácar Courses Last year the PSOE party in Mojácar organized catering and restaurant courses designed to train unemployed persons to gain subsequent employment. This year a repeat course has been held to train eighty persons. The tutors give their time free, and will also offer training for reception duties. Another course is planned to improve the spoken English for persons in the catering or hotel trade. José Luis Sánchez who is helping to organize the courses, believes that there is still an active demand for qualified staff in this industry, particularly tourist venues, apart from taking people off the unemployment market.

Mojácar Bowling Green The town hall in Mojácar is often accused of doing little to integrate the non-Spanish inhabitants. This group now total 60% of all people registered on the “padrón” (the official list of all residents). On March 7th however, a new municipal bowling green was officially opened in the Marina de la Torre hotel area. The 600 sq mts artificial surface can cater for up to six groups of bowlers, along with an office, store rooms, refreshment machines and a bar, not forgetting some loos. The project has been backed and financed by the Almería regional council as being a much needed facility for the majority of ex-pats that enjoy this sport, but also to attract bowlers from other areas with competitions. The hotel group 'Servigroup' who run the Marina Mar and Marina Playa hotels will oversee the new installations. 2015 is municipal council election time, when the “foreign” votes are very important.

Few Mortgages Getting a mortgage is not very easy nowadays. In 2006, before the building crash, Spanish banks signed up a total of 1.34 million purchasers, but then found themselves and their clients in increasing trouble ever since; a lot of it the fault of the lenders. Only 197,600 mortgages were registered in 2013, a 28% drop over 2012, that was a drop over 2011, and every year since 2006. The average amount

The “Módulo” System Many proposals are currently being discussed to change tax and fiscal regulations, designed to increase revenue on the one side, and give back reduced payments in some cases on the other side. This is not an easy balancing act. Many small businesses including bars and restaurants pay a fixed tax and IVA (VAT) amount every quarter, regardless of their actual income and expenditure.

Focus on Local News This system is known for short as the “módulo” system. Tax experts are suggesting that this method of paying should be scrapped. They consider that it is too open to abuse, and the tax authorities are being defrauded as a result. This idea is only one of many proposals, but would appear to be a way of generating more tax revenue that can be justified as being fair to other businesses.

New Traffic Regs The Spanish parliament has passed changes in traffic regulations that will shortly be in force. There was a proposal that persons attending courses to get back lost points, such as in the centre at HuércalOvera, would have to then pass a new test. This was voted out. Anyone receiving a traffic related fine now has twenty days to obtain the 50% discount, instead of fifteen days. Cyclists stopped for not wearing helmets, or failing an alcohol test, will not have their bicycles immobilized, as now can happen with other vehicles if there is no alternative driver. (Presumably they have to push it!). Cyclists under the age of sixteen now have to wear approved helmets on any road, urban or country. Alpujarra “Clic” A new smartphone and tablet 'app' is now available for anyone who wants to visit the Almería Alpujarras area. Called “Alpuguía”, it gives information on 40 hotels, hostals and rural accomodation along with historic monuments and important churches. Some 140 eating places are featured along with nature areas and 75 walking routes with their difficulty and time needed to complete them. The app can also be downloaded from , and is available in English, French and German languages. Pesticide Poisoning The last of the six young men rushed to hospital after drinking pesticide from a whisky bottle on February 28th in Almería city was discharged on March 5th. Another older man died on the way to hospital but his friend survived. Toxicologists at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city decided that the pesticide was one of a highly toxic group known as organo-phosphates first developed in Germany

in 1942. They were able to administer the appropriate antidotes very quickly. A senior health official in Almería city heavily criticised the Spanish National Toxicology Centre who at the time the last young man was discharged had still not provided a report as to the type and composition of the pesticide. He said that if it had not been diagnosed by the hospital team quickly, and they had to wait for the results from the centre, the other men might well have died. The “Pure Malt” whisky brand bottle found in El Ejido has not been sold in Spain since 2005. The use of this type of pesticide is subject to strict control, but was the cause of 150 pigeons dying in Murcia city last January. The pesticide had been mixed with wheat grains by persons unknown.

'Consentino' Sculpture Daniel Libeskind is a famous American architect who has created an enormous sculpture, entirely faced with the revolutionary new product “Dekon” fabricated at the new Consentino manufacturing plant in Cantoria. His sculpture, “Beyond the wall”, is nearly nine metres high and has a series of facets that are all clad in eighty pieces of the new material, totalling180 square metres. “Dekton” has a very low porosity, and high resistance to abrasion and extreme temperatures. It can be used as flooring or on the side of buildings. Five years of design and experimentation from their research facility and a cost of ninety million euros led to the unveiling of this product last year. A new 70,000 square metre factory at Cantoria produces the sheets.

Focus on Local News continued Another Stormy Meeting The opposition councillors finally walked out of a Mojácar council meeting on March 14th. This was because financial motions had been lumped into one by the mayoress Rosa María Cano, instead of being debated individually. The most startling of these proposals was that all council employees were given a special bonus of 1,000 euros for full time employees and 500 euros for the part time ones. The total cost is 139,000 euros. Jessica Simpson of the Mojácar Positiva Se Mueve party stated that this pay rise had no justification, and was probably illegal under local government regulations, and if so an official complaint would be made. Jessica said that in these economic times of hardship such rises were totally inappropriate, and could be construed as an attempt to “buy” votes before the 2015 municipal elections. As the mayoress and 'PP' councillors have a majority vote the proposals were put through. The mayoress voted herself a large pay rise of 42% when she assumed office in 2011, taking her annual salary to 43,400 euros with extra monthly payments in July and December. A New Employment Scheme A new scheme to create jobs has been put in place by the Spanish Ministry of Employment. Companies or small businesses can take on a new employee, full time or part time, and pay a much reduced monthly amount to the Social Security authorities. If a full time worker is being paid 1,200 euros a month, the total amount that has to be paid by the employer now is around 380 euros. Under the new scheme it will only cost 195 euros for new workers. Any new contract has to be for an indefinite period not just a temporary one, and this discount is for the first two years. After that 50% of normal social security payments have to be made for year three. If the new employee is made redundant during the three year period, a percentage of the discounts has to be refunded. This new incentive also applies to part time workers. Interested employers should talk to their company tax advisers to see exactly how it works, and the scheme is called “Tarifa plana”. There are also financial measures designed to free up funds for new companies.

Cancer Breakthrough A Spanish scientist, Joan Massaqué, who leads a medical research department in New York has made a major discovery. He and his team have solved the mystery of how secondary cancers appear. The cause of these additional cancer areas has been proved to be associated with brain neurons and capillary arteries. Much additional work has to be done to test experimental drug treatment in animals, chart any side effects, and finally test in humans. The scientist Joan Massaqué says that it could be ten years before a suitable drug is ready to be used in hospitals, but this discovery is an important start. Other cancer specialists consider his pioneering work to be so important that he is worthy of a Nobel prize for medicine.

“061” Calls During 2013, the “061” 24hr health emergency and advice number at the Almería centre at the Bola Azul city hospital received 70,000 calls, an average of 194 each day. 63% of all these calls were an immediate emergency or a potential emergency needing a standby ambulance. The rest of the calls were where advice was given over the 'phone, or treatment in the home was suggested. 49% of the calls were judged as being a genuine emergency that resulted in ambulance crews going to workplaces, private homes, or street and road accidents. The “061” number is strictly speaking only to be used in a situation that is thought to be life threatening. For other emergencies such as broken bones or minor accidents and injuries people should ring 902 50 50 61. Some calls came through

Focus on Local News continued the 112 emergency number that then transfers them. 3,974 calls from urban locations in the province where an emergency ambulance and medical team were sent out, arrived at the location in an average of nine minutes. The average urban response time throughout the whole of Andalucía is ten minutes.

Wall Art Almería city have many high rise buildings with large plain white side walls. The city council are exploring the idea of turning some of these walls into painted depictions of famous film events, or other decorative use. This has been done in Holland and is a tourist attraction. An architectural survey has identified 280 suitable walls with an area of 82,000 sq mts. Ceramic tiled mosaics is one idea, along with professionally painted graffiti. The planting of minimum maintenance plants such as bougainvillea is another option. EU funds may be available for urban regeneration grants. The Right Move? Last December the Minister for Industry revoked the result of a high price auction for the cost of buying energy from the “pool” where prices were fixed by all the electricity supply companies for January to March, known as “forward buying”. Up to then they used the price on just one day only, that in this case was last December 19th. Consequently, the government introduced a new scheme where average prices in a previous quarter determines the prices charged to consumers in the following quarter. To start the new system in operation the government fixed the price for January to March at 48 euros per Megawatt hour, but then gave the industry two additional months until June 1st to instigate the new scheme. In January, the average price on this “spot” market was 34 euros, and in February an historic low of just 17 euros. March prices started off at practically nothing. Energy available from wind farms in Spain was very high in February, along with electricity from hydroelectric sources, because of the wind and rainfall. If at the end of May the average price for a Megawatt hour in is lower than 48 euros a

rebate will have to be made, probably in July or August, and consumers will get a refund on this part of a normal bill. The electricity supply companies are still disputing that this new system will work, and claim several months are needed before they can change their billing software. By 2018, all electricity meters in the EU will have to digitally transmit the amount of electricity used every hour, and bills adjusted accordingly.

Alternative Fuels The large Carboneras cement works owned by 'Holcim España', is continuously looking for new fuel sources. A new project with the collaboration of the School of Engineers in Seville is called “Veraap”. A plant in El Ejido deals with 600,000 cubic metres of agricultural waste every year, and 15,000 cubic metres are polypropylene string cords that are used to train plant growth. Holcim intend to experiment with consolidating this material, possibly to be used with the large number of second hand tyres that they use in another pilot scheme. They are also intending to convert normal agricultural waste into biomass fuel. The eventual aim is that the use of agricultural waste not only gives them a cheap alternative fuel, but also dramatically reduces the amount of agricultural material dealt with by existing treatment plants. Rough Justice It has emerged that in December 2012, 'Ryanair' sacked a member of their cabin staff for eating a sandwich that was intended for purchase by passengers, “Without permission or payment”. This

Focus on Local News continued happened on Spanish soil, and the aggrieved employee took 'Ryanair' to court in Spain. This court has now ruled (apparently reluctantly) that they have no jurisdiction in this dispute and the employee has to complain to courts in Ireland where 'Ryanair' is legally based. The employee is claiming that the punishment of being sacked for taking and eating just one sandwich is highly disproportionate.

Huércal-Overa Swimming Pool The town council of Huércal-Overa have been given the go ahead to start actions against the company that ran the municipal indoor swimming pool. The company 'UTE Piscina Cubierta' pulled out some eight months ago, claiming that the income did not cover the operating costs. Huércal-Overa town hall are now able to nullify the original contract. There are bound to be some legal claims on either side, by the disgruntled management company, and the council. It is intended that the indoor pool can be opened again soon, possible directly run by the town hall. 4* Chirivel The first of two new 4* hotels in Chirivel is intended to be open before the end of summer. It will be situated in the El Contador area by the A-92. A grant of 350,000 euros has been approved for rural development projects and the total cost is given as 1.6 million euros. The 23 bed hotel will hopefully give employment to 22 workers. The other hotel, again near the A-92 in the Misa de Once area, will be approved when the development company submit all the necessary paperwork, within a time period of a maximum of 12 months. This hotel is planned to have 26 rooms. The “Albox” Motorway Ministry of Transport delegates from the Junta de Andalucía recently came to the Albox region. They stated that apart from “some fine details” in the paperwork and authorizations, work should start on the Albox variant motorway before Easter. At the end of last year the EU decided that this motorway was a high priority and promised 63 million euros towards the 78 million euros cost for

the Fines-El Cucador sections. It is hoped that more EU funding from the 2014-2020 budgets will be forthcoming for the last part from El Cucador to the A-7 motorway costing 35 million euros. A contract for this last section has previously been awarded to an association of companies who agreed to finance the link in return for a long maintenance contract. What will happen to this agreement is not at present clear. Work on the Albox section was stopped in 2011. This whole motorway has been christened “The marble motorway” as it will eventually enable the many marble and stone companies in the area to access the A-92 motorway at Baza, and the A-7 at La Concepción.

Paco de Lucía Spain's most famous guitarist, “Paco de Lucía”, died on February 26th aged sixty six. Born into a gipsy family in Algerciras, he became the most renowned of all flamenco guitarists and made flamenco famous internationally. He then performed with many famous jazz figures, particularly at the annual Vitoria jazz festival. Amongst many awards he was presented with the Spanish “Principe de Asturias de las Artes” award in 2004, and was given a “Grammy” award in the US. Probably the most famous living flamenco artist is now “Tomatito” from Almería province, who collaborated with Paco last year to produce a tribute album to Camarón. Like Paco, Tomatito is now internationally famous. Paco never learnt to read music, but had an amazing ear. After his death he was described as, “A humble genius, but a god of the guitar.” Tomatito is performing a Paco de Lucía homage concert on April 12th in El Ejido.

So Now You Know... Wellington Boots Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington (17691852), asked his shoemaker to make a calfskin leather high boot, hard wearing for battle and comfortable for domestic use. They became a gentleman's fashion accessory. After the American Charles Goodyear invented the vulcanization process for rubber, the boots became used by agricultural workers as they were waterproof. The 1st World War trench warfare battles made strong Wellington boots a vital army footwear. They were used in the 2nd World War as well, but then became used by builders, fishermen and gardeners. The UK Hunter Boot Company turned the Wellington boot into a modern fashion accessory that “everybody who was anybody” had to have.

The Longest River There is still some debate as to whether the Nile or the Amazon river is the longest. The exact length depends on the original source and the final estuary where they join the sea. Calculations are also very difficult with the courses of large rivers changing over time. The river Nile that eventually reaches the Mediterranean sea is believed to be 4,100 miles long. Calculations for the Amazon river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean put the Amazon as being 4,000 miles in length. Brazilian and Peruvian studies claim that the long tidal canal at the Amazon estuary make it the longest. The Yangtze river in China is certainly 3rd, at 3,917 miles in length, entirely within Chinese territory. After this is the Mississippi at 3902 miles.

The Eiffel Tower Still the highest structure in Paris, the Eiffel tower was named after Alexandre Gustave Eiffel whose company designed and and built it in 1889 at the entrance to the Paris World's Fair site. It is a latticed iron design and has 18,038 pieces with 2.5 million rivets. It is the biggest paid-entry tourist attraction in the world, and in 2010 it received the 250 millionth visitor. There are three levels for visitors with a restaurant on the first two levels. The top observation level is 276 mts (906 ft) above ground. 'Otis' lifts eventually got the lifts contract, turned down at first because they were “foreign”. There are also 300 steps up to the first level, and another 300 from there to the second level.

Snow Boarding In 1964, a young surf fanatic called Sherman Poppen was dreaming about surfing on snow instead of water, in the Canadian Rockies. His first design was two children's plastic skis bolted together, that was a present for his daughter Wendy. In 1970, Dimitrije Milovich started to develop a snow board from the new and popular short surfboard designs. He tried laminated glass and steel edges together with nylon straps. At first, snow boarders were banned from ski slopes as being too dangerous for skiers, and they resorted to using ski slopes at night. They laboriously hauled themselves up on foot as the ski lifts were closed. Today more than 80% of the young people who practise winter sports choose snowboarding.

Caves Caves are technically giant spaces or holes that go horizontally underground. A vertical hole is called a pothole. The most spectacular caves are where acidic rainwater has trickled through onto limestone and slowly worn it away, perhaps for centuries. The world's largest known cave is in Malaysia and is the Sarawak Chamber. It is so big that three giant sports stadiums would fit inside with room to spare. The deepest cave yet discovered is in the Pyrenees, called the Pierre St Martin gallery and is 800 metres below ground at the lowest point. The longest cave system discovered is a series of linked caves that start in the Mammoth National Park Cave in Kentucky USA and extend for 390 miles or 630 kms.

Earthquake Studies Seismologists who study previous earthquakes have decided that there are basically two rules. If there has been no earthquake activity for a long time in a known earthquake zone, there is liable to be one soon! The longer the period is without any activity, the predictions are for more severe earthquakes! These places with no activity are known as “seismic gaps”. Measurements of minute movements of the ground are done by sophisticated laser tracking from fixed points. Special satellites can also track minute movement by digital photographic computer comparisons. Another Thumbs Up for Red

uan María Irigoyen is an eminent Spanish cardiologist from Bilbao who has just added his weight to the debate over drinking red wine for health purposes. Apart from a long career in cardiology he has been the consultant heart advisor to the Spanish “Vuelta Ciclista” cycling teams for years. He is convinced that all the surveys and recommendations connected with the moderate drinking of red wine for good health, and a useful tool against heart related problems, are absolutely right. During the 1990s, studies showed that French people ate fatty foods and generally smoked, but had less heart related disease than the UK or the USA. This finding was called “The French paradox”, and eventually the widespread consumption of wine was found to be the cause. This resulted in many further studies and research, and red wine was flagged as being the most effective.

Red wine, unlike white or rosé, is made using the whole grape, seeds and skin, and the skin is very important. Antioxidants called poly-phenols are present in grape skins, and these antioxidants have been proved to reduce the fatty linings in arteries from “bad” cholesterol. If lumps of cholesterol break away they cause a blockage in arteries, one of the most common causes of heart attacks, thromboses, and other heart problems such as hypertension. One of the poly-phenols in red wine is resveratrol, and is very good at dissolving blood clots and producing insulin. It has also been suggested that resveratrol can help to slow other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and possibly neuro-degenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's. Of course, an excess of alcohol is a bad thing medically. Alcohol can reduce the levels of “good” cholesterol, In laboratory tests on human cells at the Ulm and increase fatty residue. The Old Almería Station

he long debate about whether the eventual “AVE (high speed train) will culminate in an underground station and link to the port in Almería city rumbles on. There has been fuel to the fire by the U-turn from the Spanish Minister of Transport that funding for the underground high speed train station at Murcia will now come from central government. It had previously been announced that all underground stations would have to be funded by local or regional government, not from central funds. Meanwhile there is still another much longer debate concerning the old station that is one of the architectural jewels of Almería city, but shut some 10 years ago. Since then this station has been slowly falling into disrepair and not put to any other use. In 1868, the London St Pancras station was built from cast iron and glass. This was followed by the construction of a similar building in Paris for the 1889 International Exhibition. Cast iron construction with very large spanning arches and glass panels became the normal design for railway stations. This allowed huge spaces for trains and platforms underneath, and a maximum of light.

The Almería railway station was started in 1893, designed by the French architect La Farge who was a great admirer of the Eiffel tower. The work was part of the very large project for the construction of the railway, station, and the cast iron “Cable Inglés” iron ore discharge point opened in 1904. Enormous amounts of iron ore from the Morena mountain range were brought on railway wagons to Almería port, discharged into large hoppers and then onto cargo ships. La Compañia de los Caminos de Hierro del Sur de España carried out the construction of the station and railway. Architecture from Seville influenced the station design, a style known as “neo-mudéjar” that combined Christian and Arabic designs and 18th century elements. Arabic style brickwork and stained glass contrasts with the cast iron. On the face of the high central arches a large station

clock was installed. The station became an important regional hub, and then a social and architectural legacy for Almería city. In 1989, the station was declared to be of great cultural heritage but was not used by trains after 2005 when the new “Intermodal” station opened, coinciding with the 2005 Mediterranean Olympic Games coming here. Almería city council have had spasmodic plans for the future use of the station as a large cultural centre, museum, or municipal library, and be open once again to the general public. In the last few years there have been requests for the Ministry of Transport to relinquish ownership and hand over the station to the city council. There have been denials that the station was to be put up for sale, or rented out, as has happened with the Princípe Pío station in Madrid. It has now been agreed that the station will be handed over, but the mayor of Almería, Luis Rogelio RodríguezComendador, says that the city council cannot come up with the funds to repair or convert it. He suggests a joint venture between “Adif”, the Spanish railway company, the Junta de Andalucía and the city council. At the moment this is another financial stalemate situation. Central government say that they have not been entirely letting the station decay, and last year 20,000 euros was spent on essential repairs. “Adif” recognize in their web-page of stations of great historical heritage the stations of Toledo, Nord in Valencia, Francia in Barcelona and our own Almería one.

The Mercadona Barometer

he large Mercadona chain of supermarkets now has nearly 1,500 outlets employing 74,000 workers. The company is considered to be a market leader and continually modifies their purchase and selling techniques. Other supermarket chains, large retailers, and retail analysts watch their progress with great interest.

Productivity in 2013 amounted to 24,000 euros worth of sales per month for every employee, up from 23,100 euros in 2012. Mercadona give generous maternity leave, and in large centres of populations and outlets set up a free crèche and nursery.

Their president, Juan Roig, shuns any publicity, and only holds a press conference once a year when he presents the trading figures for the previous year and answers questions. This took place in March for the 2013 period. The turnover last year was 19.8 billion euros, up 4% on 2012, but Juan Roig explained that the increase in “IVA” (VAT) from September 2012 accounted for some of this amount. The volume of sales went up by only 2%, and 2013 was described as a “difficult year”. The profit of 515 million euros was just 1% up on 2012. The 74,000 staff is almost unchanged from 2012, but some staff in large cities were switched to the sixty new stores that opened last year, and five existing ones were closed. Mercadona is considered a model employer and after a short introductory period all their workers are put on fixed permanent contracts. Many other companies give employees short term contracts and hopefully renew them. The new regulations and reductions in Social Security payments announced at the end of February for new fixed contract employees, (we explain this in a “local news” item), is designed to create secure employment, but this is how Mercadona operates now. Asked to comment on this incentive scheme at the press conference Juan Roig said that he would take on new employees when he wanted to expand his workforce, but the subsidies would not make any difference at present. Juan Roig agrees that productivity has to be increased and costs cut down where possible, but says that good wages are a key factor. 80% of his staff get a minimum take-home pay of 1,400 euros per month. Mercadona also operate a productivity bonus for all their staff that in 2013 was between one and two months’ salary, depending on the years

Since 2011, local suppliers of fruit and vegetables are used giving reduced transport costs. Last year he extended this to the purchase of fresh fish and roving buyers attend the fish auctions up and down the coast including those in Almería province. In 2013, suppliers of fruit and vegetables in this province obtained some 120 million euros from their sales to Mercadona. A big change in 2013 was the sale of fruit and vegetables “loose”, rather then the previous large majority of pre-packed items. This policy was designed to help the customer, and increase sales of smaller quantities. Sales figures were not as good as they had hoped, and they intend to see how this works out in 2014, but reserve judgement at present. Asked at the press conference if there were any plans to open his stores on Sundays he replied that this would conflict with the relationship he has with his employees. In a moment of humour he then joked that if he thought dancing the “Sevillanas” (a Spanish dance style from Seville) or opening on a Sunday would dramatically increase sales, he would give it a try!

What’s On Theatre “Jornadas de Teatro del Siglo de Oro de Almería XXX1” is a travelling theatre and cultural event subsidised by various bodies, designed to bring these events to various municipalities. It comes to Huércal-Overa on April 9th. More information is available from the local tourist offices or town halls.

Cinema Huércal-Overa screen their last of six original English language films, “Les Miserables”, at the municipal cinema on Tuesday, April 8th. It is intended that there will be other such films organized in the coming months. Admission price is 3 euros 50 céntimos and it starts at 8.30pm.

Concerts The Almería city orchestra and choir, directed by Michael Thomas, p e r f o r m M o z a r t ' s f o r t i eth symphony and his Requiem Mass on April 5th at 8.30pm. The performance is at the Almería city Cathedral of the Incarnation and entry is free. The Rolling Stones are performing at the Vicente Calderón stadium in Madrid on June 25th.

Flamenco Concert “La Leyenda de Nazareno” (The legend of Nazareth) is a flamenco performance to record the events of Lent, Holy Week and Easter, on April 12th at 9.30pm. There are a variety of performers and flamenco groups at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium Almería city. Tickets are 10 & 12 euros with a 2 euro discount for two tickets purchased together.

“Tunas” Festival Mojácar 2014 “Tunas” Festival. The fifth World Tunas event and competition, organized by the Granada University group, takes place in Mojácar from May 16th18th. “Tunas” are groups of costumed travelling minstrels who perform along the Mojácar streets and bars, and take part in a competition held in the Pueblo Indalo Apartment Hotel square (weather permitting- if not the Centro de Usos Múltiples, Mojacar fuente). Tickets for concerts in Almería from the ticket office in the Teatro Apolo, 25 Rambla Obispo Orberá, Almería , tel: 950 230 922. MonFri, 10.30am-1.30pm & 6-8pm, or Sat, 11am-1pm. Exhibitions 2014 “Itinerarte” travelling Contempory Ar t exhibition organized by the Junta de Andalucía. This features 41 works by 8 artists. The exhibition can be seen March 9th-April 27th at the Aula Polivante de la Escuela de Cine, Tabernas. May 7th- June 15th at the Sala Exposiciones, Purchena. “Ars Visibilis II”, The second annual exhibition of various art forms by women can be seen at Almería Museum gallery until April 27th. Apart from a contemporary art display there will be video and performance displays, sculptures, photographs and a digital art section. 39 different artists have works on display, designed to show the wide range of female cultural activities.

What’s On Miscellaneous “Degustho” at Huércal-Overa is a major gastronomy event from April 5th-7th at the Sports Pavillion. It features the best of “Made in Almería” foods and produce. There is a “Calle de las Tapas” display with various establishments exhibiting their dishes and products used in the hotel and restaurant trade. A “Mini Gourmet” area is devoted to the younger visitors, and six chefs who run restaurants with a Michelin star will be attending, including the two from Almerimar and Roquetas. Shopping Festival Albox is holding an event on April 5th & 6th set up by the Albox Association of Businesses entitled “Albox Shopping Festival”. An English corner is dedicated to British memorabilia and a marquee will be in place for legal ex-pat businesses. There is a car show, two day prize bands competition and a gourmet corner for typical local foods that will also visit various streets. Free beers are available to visitors who purchases selected goods from the trade stands. Easter Processions The solemn Easter religious processions through Almería city start from Saturday, April 12th, daily until Easter Sunday, April 20th. There are various ones each day starting mostly from the early evenings until midnight, spread over several hours. In smaller m u n i c i p a l i t i e s , t h e E a s te r procession may only take place on dates between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Local town halls or tourist offices will have details of dates and times.

Mojácar Moors and Christians events take place from Friday to Sunday, June 6th-8th The Market by the Beach. Starting 5th April, every Saturday there will be a flea market for antiques, crafts, jewellery, second hand, etc., held next to Trufi Bar on Mojácar Playa. What’s On Zurgena and District Royal British Legion will be staging an exhibition to commemorate the start of the First World War at the Pedro Gilabert Museum in Arboleas from June 2nd-13th, as part of a worldwide recognition of the sacrifices made by ordinary people. The displays will feature details of events leading up to the start of the conflict, letters from the front line, photographs, and a selection of propaganda posters. If any local residents have family photographs, letters, or other memorabilia and are willing to supply copies with short notes about them we will be happy to display them with suitable acknowledgements. Urgent Help Needed. Paul, the owner of the Dog House foundation is currently ill, and also suffering from a long term illness. We are in great need of assistance of all types, donations of dog food, volunteers, and help from other organisations. At present there are only two volunteers travelling quite a distance, in a rota system, looking after the dogs and this will become difficult in the long term. Without further help the situation could become impossible and the poor dogs would suffer. MACS Mojácar cancer support group. On Saturday, April 5th, Casa Lago in Mojácar have kindly agreed to raise funds for MACS for the second year running, at the annual celebration in memory of Ashlea. Tickets are 10 euros (with people supplying their own drinks), available from the MACS shops, or email macscancer support@live.co.uk Vera District Lions have increased the momentum in helping provide food for the needy in the local community. They have set up a collection point trolley, at the Vera 'Iceland' store checkout and are asking people to deposit the odd can or packet of foodstuff, to be distributed to Vera food banks. Food donated does not have to be purchased in Iceland, so check out your cupboards for those odd items that you will never use. Lions This new initiative, driven by the Manager Tony Pepper, will make a massive difference to the food banks locally. Vera Lions have been actively collecting fresh fruit and vegetables from several packing plants in Palomares for over a year, and supplying help to the Evangelical church in Turre to feed the poor.
