Sunshine At Last!

hat a difference the sun makes! After we had more rainfall in January and February than we normally get in a whole year, the last few days of March and the first few days of April saw clear skies, terraces open again at bars and restaurants, beach bars with customers, and the Easter tourists. Apart from the tourists who flocked to coastal resorts for Easter, the local Easter processions were mainly held under blue skies. This was a distinct improvement on 2008 and 2009 when one or two of the 21 ‘cofrades’ (brotherhoods) who mount the processions in Almería city had to cry off at the last moment because of strong rain. The only complaint this year was of one or two strong winds.

Finally the much needed by-passAnfor theProcession Mojácar Easter beach road shows little sign of happening. A report that apparently the town hall received in December 2009 has just come to the attention of some councillors. The route of the by-pass has been criticized by the Environment agency as they believe that it will destroy 1,100 “Limonium estevei” plants. The councillor Carlos Cervantes, well known for his ecological and conservation views, thinks that the number of plants to be destroyed has been exaggerated out of all proportion and the actual number is about 20!

Hotels reported occupancies of 85-90%, with a tremendous surge at the last minute. Hotels accept that many of their customers now book via the Internet, or still turn up without anywhere booked, at the last minute. This makes planning for staff levels almost impossible, but there are large numbers of unemployed workers in the hotel and catering industry that can fortunately be drafted in at the last moment. Mojácar is embroiled in scandal at the moment, partly due to the audit of the town hall in 2007. This is the year that Gabriel Flores, the mayor, gave way to the present mayoress Rosa María Cano. The Andalucían Audit Authority claim that 5.6 million euros was written off without much action to chase up these debts, and another 4.3 million euros written off because of bankruptcy of the debtors. The audit authority also state land sold in Macenas beach was split into two as the whole chunk was over 25% of the assets of the town hall. If the land had not been split, the Junta de Andalucía would have had to approve the sale. The audit criticizes the auction proceedings; the fact that four companies bidding were linked, and the amount of 7.5 million euros obtained. The sale money has been frozen.

Meanwhile, Sunday April 25th is the fiesta of San Marcos (St Mark) and various towns and villages in Almería province have him as one of their patron saints. These include Macael, Oria, Purchena, Roquetas and Tíjola. The emphasis is on farm animals and agricultural produce. There are no National Fiestas in April, but Saturday May 1st is “Day of the worker” Any official offices that might have been open this Saturday will be closed. Sunday May 2nd is Spanish Mother’s Day (always the first Sunday in May) and May 3rd “Día de la Cruz” when floral crosses are paraded through the streets. Canjáyar in Almería province claims to have a piece of the original cross in their church. This fiesta takes place in some areas locally, particularly Almería city.

Focus on Local News Plan For Older Tourists Extended The plan to bring European tourists to Andalucía has been extended to Almería and Granada, instead of just Cádiz, Málaga and Huelva. This plan (Turismo Senior Europa) is designed for those persons over 55 years of age, who may never have travelled out of their own country. The number of people who can take part in such visits has been extended from 40,000 to 60,000 or 600,000 nights stay in selected hotels. The plan is part of an EU initiative to encourage people to visit other countries and 11 million euros split between central government and Andalucía will pay for the subsidized cost and promotion. Persons over 55 are eligible to apply from countries such as Poland, Greece, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Holland, Italy, Portugal, France and Ireland. The plan for 2010 will continue until April 30th and then start again in the winter of 2011.

Mojácar Councillor Resigns One of the only two non-Spanish town councillors in Almería province has resigned. Albert Schröter, an independent member of Mojácar Council has resigned from the council for “personal and work” reasons. Rosa María Cano, Mayoress of Mojácar, told journalists that her relationship with Albert Schröter had always been good, but that she accepted his reasons for resigning.

The Albox 9 The lawyers ‘Alonso and Garrido’ acting for the nine families whose houses have been threatened with demolition have had their appeals accepted by Almería courts. The basis of the appeals is that at no time before the demolition orders were any of the owners informed of legal proceedings. The original building licences issued in 2002 were subsequently withdrawn by the Junta de Andalucía (governing body) and various appeals previously were denied. Two of the properties were subsequently sold to new owners. Part of the new regulations to stop irregular buildings that have just been announced mean that the Spanish Land Registry must investigate whether any refusal or cancellation of a licence has taken place, or if legal action is pending.

“Tall Ship” visits Almería

The German sailing vessel ‘Alexander von Humboldt’, one of the oldest “tall ships”, recently docked in Almería port. First launched in 1906 and then named ‘Kiel’, it was purchased in 1986 by the German Sail Training Association (STAG), equipped with the latest navigational aids and re-launched as a three mast training ship. The people who take part in the sailing courses also study oceanography, weather conditions and sea life. Focus on Local News continued Still Missing Lourdes García Carreño went missing after leaving work at a petrol station in Roquetas at 3pm on October 3rd 2009. She had previously broken up with her boyfriend and lost weight, but clothing was laid out in her apartment for an outing with friends that evening. Despite massive searches by police and volunteers no sign has ever been found of her, except for her car that was left near the Roquetas bullring, with the keys in the ignition, probably on the night she went missing. Searches were discontinued by volunteers over Christmas because of the ill health of her father. Lourdes was a qualified teacher, but had worked at the petrol station for a period of time, and according to her coworkers was quite normal the day she last left work, and was looking forward to a meal, as she worked from the early morning until 3pm.

All Spain to be Laser Mapped Modern techniques using aircraft and laser cameras are being used to map the whole of Spain. The equipment is able to send 70,000 laser pulses per second from a height of 1,200 metres and the area mapped is covered in a series of sweeps. The laser beams return from the land to the aircraft and the time elapsed gives extremely accurate measurements. Apart from land measurements the information includes the mapping of forest areas where trees can be measured to an accuracy of 10 cms. The laser mapping techniques will be used to map areas where flooding is likely to take place, measure the density of forests and also their proximity to items such as power lines that could be a fire hazard. The amount of CO2 influence from forests can also be calculated. The laser cameras can measure the surrounding coastal waters to a depth of 40 metres. The modern equipment means that the cost of the mapping is only 14 euros per square kilometer, so that the whole of Spain can be mapped at a total cost of 7 million euros.

The Clocks Change The annual changing of clocks by putting them forward one hour took place on March 28th at 2am in the morning if you were up then and did it! This is now done in all 27 EU member states and is designed to make the maximum use of sunlight and save consumption of energy. The Spanish authority for the saving of energy (IDEA) has calculated that the potential savings for Spain amount to 5% of the power used,

that is equivalent to saving 300 million euros. A third of this saving comes from domestic use.

Drug Savings A new directive for the purchase and supply of drugs for the Spanish health service and farmacias (chemists) has been instigated to try and save 1,500 million euros. Part of the plan is to buy drugs and medicines more centrally to reduce costs and there are new guidelines for “generic” medicines, such as aspirin, paracetamol and ibruprofin. Chemists are being asked not to prescribe medicines that should really be issued with a prescription from a doctor. With cheaper drugs from bulk purchase the chemists would be making less profit, so their limit before they pass on money to the Spanish health service for prescription drugs has been raised. Generic medicines will also be chosen from a list that includes the daily cost of treatment, rather than just the cheapest brands as at present.

Agreement on ‘Cortijo del Fraile’ and Rodalquilar The famous ‘Cortijo del Fraile’ near Níjar has been falling into decay for many years. It became famous after it inspired Federico Garcia Lorca, the Spanish poet from Granada, to write one of his best known works “Bodas de Sangre” (Blood Wedding). Nearby are the deserted mine workings of Rodalquilar where gold was once mined. An agreement has now been reached in principle between the private owner of both estates to sell 400 hectares to the Junta de Andalucía (Governing body for Almería province). The area would be turned into a tourist location and it is possible that the mines would be restored and gold actually mined again, as an added attraction. An exchange is also planned to release 300 hectares of land where ecological vegetable production is in full swing with another 300 hectares in another area.

A comprehensive survey of all the beach bars in Almería province is being carried out to decide what action needs to be taken to regularize any defects and make them fully legal. It is intended that 50% of the surveys will be ready before this summer with the remainder following by October 2010. The changeover of the responsibility for beach bars from the ‘Costas’ (coastal) authority to the Junta de Andalucía (governing body) is still being worked out. Turre Projects Turre Council recently approved the plan to make major modifications to the main road through Turre at a likely cost of 6 million euros. This project has been debated for many years. Although not as yet on the Spanish statute book, a new law has been approved to limit the time public authorities and ordinary receivers of goods can delay payment. A police spokesperson stated that whilst no-one had been arrested for this crime they were confident as to having identified the murderer, as yet not caught. Photographic Success Carlos Felipe Ortiz, a photographer from Almería specializes in photographs of wedding couples and has been awarded 4 silver medals for photographs submitted to the famous photographic competition in Orvieto, Italy. 2,500 photographers submitted work and last year Carlos won a single silver medal. Many couples travel to Almería to be photographed by Carlos and he regularly travels to Murcia or Granada province. His photographs are considered unique.

Tuna Farming Juan Deus, provincial delegate for Agriculture and Fisheries recently visited Garrucha where he was taken to see the Tuna farms that have been set up off the Cuevas coast. The company ‘Naturepesca’ first came to the area in 2004 and hope that in 2010 they will farm over 500 tonnes of Tuna fish. Their installation consists of two 90 metre diameter cages and four 50

Tuna fish over 30 kilos in weight are caught by other vessels between May 15th and June 15th and then put in the two large feeding cages where they are fattened up with mackerel and other food. 75% of the tuna fish are sold to Japan, 13% to the US and the remainder is purchased from within Spain. Apart from the fish farms, some 41 fishing boats still operate out of Garrucha and Carboneras and provide employment for 350 fishermen.

Cruise Ship Fair Representatives from Almería port and the tourist department went to Miami recently to take part in the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention. This convention is considered to be the most important event world wide and Almería had their own stand in the Spanish pavilion. The object of this incentive was to encourage other major cruise lines to include Almería in their list of ports where the cruise ships dock. Bookings for 2010 are already 17% up on 2009 and it is hoped that 60,000 passengers can be enticed to Almería in 2010. Andalucía registered 314,000 US tourists during 2009 who stayed an average of 2 days. The event is also publicizing the “Oasis of the Sea”, the largest cruise ship ever built that can carry 6,300 passengers.

New Illegal Building Regulations The Junta de Andalucía have introduced new regulations designed to stop illegal houses being built, registered with the Spanish Land Registry, hooked up to supplies of electricity, water, gas and telephone services, and if all else fails, subject to quick demolition orders. Because of this last measure the new regulations have been nick-named “Demolition Express!” Many newspapers have seized on this last recourse. The intention of the new laws is that buildings that are patently illegal should be stopped before work is under way, and if not as soon as possible. At present, the period of time to obtain a demolition order can take up to 12 months during which time the building may well have been finished and occupied, if not sold. One of the provisions is that Colleges of Architects who approve projects must determine whether the land is appropriate for the intended use and has permissions in place. Town halls must be notified of illegal projects. The Land Registry are now made liable for including in any documentation court action or disputes that affect the legality, and service providers are prohibited from supplying services to properties that are not fully legal. Finally a series of fines are in place from 6,000 euros to 120,000 euros to deter illegal properties being started and other sanctions to make the monetary gain from embarking on an illegal project non existent, with sanctions up to 150% of the building costs. Town halls can apply for a rapid demolition order if all else fails, and when granted can execute this order within 30 days.

Garrucha Marine Museum Opened

The museum at the Garrucha castle, dedicated to marine history and the story of Garrucha as a fishing port, has finally been opened. The Councillor for Agriculture and Fisheries officially opened the museum on March 29th. Various rooms show the importance of Garrucha as a port, the history of fishing, a section about pirates and information about marine life in the area. The exhibition is at the “Patio de Luces” exhibition area of the Almería Diputación building, where 116 photographs are on display and the ‘Unicaja’ cultural centre where there are photos of Almería city. The Cost of Smoking New regulations to extend smoke free areas are being debated by the Spanish parliament. Health authorities consider that the Spanish government could save 5,444 million euros if everybody stopped smoking. They consider that this amount is the difference between the tax generated by tobacco sales and the cost to the Spanish National Health Service for the treatment of smoking related diseases. They also claim that 7,800 million euros is the bill that employers pay for loss of production and cleaning costs attributable to smokers. New ‘Parador’ Menu

Turre Water Turre council have approved a plan to use ‘Galasa’ as their source of water and sewage disposal for all new developments. This is because the existing water supply used by Turre comes from the Sierra Cabrera and the level of reserves is dropping. Turre residents have been complaining for a long time about the quality of the water and the frequent breaks in the supply. Turre town hall cannot switch all their water supplies to ‘Galasa’ without permission from the Almería authorities who control who ‘Galasa’ supplies water to.

Arboleas Museum The new Director, Lavina Calvacanti, at the Pedro Gilabert Museum in Arboleas has chosen three local non-Spanish artists to hold exhibitions during 2010. The Dutch artist Henrica Kramers and the British artists Jill Brookes and Reg Brookes have been invited to display their paintings,

The chain of National ‘Parador’ Hotels have introduced a special menu at all their 93 establishments that are designed to introduce the typical cuisine of the individual area. These menus are available at both lunch and dinner and have been entitled “El Arte Breve de Cocina” (The Brief Art of Cooking). All the ‘Parador’ hotels launched their new choice menu on March 23rd, and they will be available until the end of the year. Local products have been chosen to give a “taste” of the area and examples of how local cuisine has developed. The Mojácar ‘Parador’ has chosen a menu that exemplifies the style of cooking and produce from the Almería Alpujarras region. The Mojácar ‘Parador’ is at present the only one in Almería province and was built it 1966. It was recently substantially renovated. The Mojácar Manager, Francisco Navarro, hopes that both tourists and residents will come to the restaurant or bar area to sample their extensive cuisine, or just for a drink, as it is open to allcomers, not just hotel guests.

DVD of the Month Sherlock Holmes

The prospect of a Sherlock Holmes film made by groovy geezer Guy Ritchie and starring former bad boy Robert Downey Jr as Holmes might provoke a sense of dread among the detective’s devoted fans. Has another British icon been subjected to a Hollywood act of cultural plunder? Yes, but to rather good effect. Ritchie has attempted to change the style but keep the substance of Holmes. That formidable brain is still there, but there’s a new emphasis on the sleuth’s formidable fists. He looks more degenerate boho - an unshaven and sweaty mess - than the tall, skinny boffin of the Basil Rathbone era. It’s Dr John Watson (Jude Law), however, who has undergone the most radical change. This Watson is as well trained in the martial arts as in medicine. They operate as a team of equals, instead of star and sidekick. The plot is just an ingenious ploy to allow plenty of action sequences, some of them superfluous. The real drama here is the impending breakup of Watson and Holmes, for the good doctor is engaged to be married to his fiancée, Mary. Holmes is clearly upset at losing his friend. And there’s a good scene where we see him use his formidable powers of deduction to humiliate Mary in front of her fiancé. Ritchie’s film is an attempt to drag Holmes and Watson into the age of the buddy-based, bang-boom-bash action-hero film - and to attract a new audience of young admirers. It’s a good-looking film that is fun and comic, with fine performances.

The stars are easy to find, but Ric wants to note down the "bit roles" played by friends on the street that we see every day.

So Now You Know... Heath Robinson To describe something as “Heath Robinson” is to thoroughly ridicule a turn of events that are bound to end in confusion and over complication and therefore failure. Heath Robinson was a famous cartoonist and his cartoons showed simple objects that he had deliberately made very complex, and were unlikely to work. If anyone had been able to construct his fantastic designs they would probably not have worked, and they were generally thought of as a “hammer to crack an egg”! The phrase “Heath Robinson” grew to be used to describe anything that was cobbled together, rather than useful or workable. All at Sixes and Sevens If we say someone is all at sixes and sevens this implies that they are in a state of complete confusion and are unsure what to do next. The expression dates from mediaeval times and is believed to have come from gambling. If a gambler with a single dice bet on a “six”, the highest number on a dice, he was thought to be foolish. A player couldn’t bet on a “seven” as there was no such number but the phrase was used to show someone who was so confused or foolhardy that he was unable to see what he should really be doing. Over time this phrase was used to describe someone who was totally confused in any situation. Measurement of Earthquakes The Richter Scale is an objective measure from 1 to 10 of the magnitude of an earthquake by means of a seismograph at 100km from the epicentre. The world record stands at 9.5. They say one of 12 would split the Earth in two. The difference between 4 and 5 is 10 times as strong. The MSK scale (after its inventors Medvedev, Sponheuer and Karnik) is a subjective 'measure' of the effects of an earthquake on land, trees, infrastructure and persons. It is used to describe damage to areas where there are no seismographs and to compare historical earthquakes. This scale is used in most of Europe and goes from I to XII.

Myths About The Swiss Swiss rolls do not come from Switzerland, and they don’t really eat anything similar. The Spanish eat “brazos de gitanos” (gypsies’ arms) that are similar, and in the US, as “jelly” means “jam”, they call them jelly rolls. The Swiss didn’t invent cuckoo clocks either; they were first invented in Germany in 1738. The Swiss nation try to stay neutral, but are not pacifists, and men between 20 and 40 still spend time in the Swiss National Militia. If they needed an army there are said to be 500,000 trained soldiers. The Swiss do eat dog meat made into salted or smoked sausages, which is seen as a sensible re-cycling for a dead pet. A Boycott A Boycott means that, as a form of protest, you abandon dealings with a person or organization. This commonly used word came from an incident in 19th century Irish history. Captain Charles Boycott was an English land agent who worked for Lord Earne on his Irish estates. He was bitterly disliked and refused to reduce his tenants rent, although there was a crisis. The Irish Land League decided that the only way to deal with him was to persuade everyone to stop dealing with him. Boycott only backed down a bit, but the practice became known as “boycotting” and went into the English language! Earthquakes in Spain The Iberian Peninsula is only at moderate risk from earthquakes, although every two hundred odd years one as big as six on the Richter Scale occurs. The earthquake in Arenas de Rey, Granada in 1884 was the most deadly in modern Spanish history. It had an estimated magnitude of 6.5-7 (Richter) and an intensity of 10 (MSK). Almost 800 people were killed and 1,500 were injured. 14,000 homes were destroyed. Most of the town was destroyed and so today’s centre dates back to the end of the 19th century, which was rebuilt with money raised throughout Spain. An earthquake in Vera in 1518 destroyed the village whilst the one in Almeria in 1522 caused more than 2,500 deaths.

Thirty Years of Solar Science

n 1978, work was started preparing the site at the Almería Solar Centre near Tabernas.

The first experiments were undertaken in 1980 and since then the Solar Centre has become a reference point for studies and experimentation. The first solar panel installation and testing facility was opened in 1981 followed by the Centre for Electricity from Solar Power in 1983. In 1987, a large control complex was opened to co-ordinate the motorized movement of solar panels and mirrors and in 1998 the site containing the parabolic reflectors was opened. Tabernas is considered the ideal site for a solar investigation centre as at least 300 days of sunshine is logged annually, and grants from central Spanish government and the EU, along with university projects and funding, keep the centre active and at the forefront of technology.

Apart from the scientific research, the site has a large visitors centre managed by the company, ‘Centro Land’, since 2006. The number of visitors to the centre was nearly 14,000 people in 2009, and apart from a display and information about the centre, visitors can be given a guided tour. Recently, a ‘solar’ bus was put into daily service as a reminder of the potential use of solar energy for transport and also as a test bed to improve the technology behind the design of the vehicle. It is the only fully operational solar vehicle in existence on a regular basis. It is hoped that the number of visitors from the general public and

schools and colleges will rise to 20,000 a year, providing education about sustainable energy to the visitors, and further income for the centre. When the solar power for the production of electricity centre (CESA 1) was opened in 1983 this involved the building of the giant 80 metre tower that focuses the sunlight from 300 mirrors. Between 1988 and 1991, the centre was asked to do research work by the European Space Agency, to test materials that had to withstand high temperatures. At Tabernas, they were able to test such materials using their solar reflectors to achieve a test temperature of 1,800 degrees. From 1990, the centre began constructing a solar oven, to be used for research into heat capture techniques using solar power and the oven has recorded temperatures of over 2,000 degrees for extended periods of time. Research has also been under way since 1988 into the production of drinking water by distillation, using the solar energy as a production technique for the water. To commemorate the 30th anniversary, an exhibition has been opened at the visitors centre that not only includes a photo-exhibition of the centre since 1978, but also an exhibition of objects and equipment that mark key steps in the advance of information about solar power and the applications. Plans are also on display for the next major expansion that involves the building of a renewable energy centre on adjoining land. An Almería Success Story

n December 2001, the newly formed Almería City Orchestra gave their first performance. Known as the OCAL (La Orquesta Cuidad de Almería), they have achieved spectacular success in accomplishments, public awareness and recognition. The orchestra was founded to promote classical music amongst young people and this is still the main aim. Their repertoire has since extended to contemporary music and popular events such as film music nights. The Almería City council gave them their patronage and the public flocked to their concerts. They have achieved great recognition for the collaboration in the prestigious annual International Julián Arcas Guitar Competition, where they take part in the final concert. They also took part in the opening of the Mediterranean Olympic Games in Almería, in front of the King and Queen of Spain, and millions of TV viewers. In 2006, a choral section was formed, in order to perform ‘Carmina Burana’, at the annual Almería fiesta events. Some 5,000 people came to the concert. This has led to performances of Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem Mass, Haydn Masses and other events such as scenes from Mozart’s opera, The Marriage of Figaro. This has led also to the formation of a youth choir, a junior orchestra with ages from six to thirteen, and a choir of children aged six or over. The choir is now led by Román Barcelo who is Choir and Musical History Director at the Cartagena Music Conservatory.

the Royal Northern College of Music and was also selected for the European Community Youth Orchestra. His studies continued and he performed under the direction of internationally famous orchestra directors such as Claudio Abbado and Laurin Maazel. In 1971, he formed the Brodsky Quartet and became world famous, before leading the Cleveland string orchestra. Under the direction of Michael Thomas, the Almería City Orchestra and Choir continue to progress in experience, talent and recognition. The orchestra and choir are made up of completely Spanish performers, unlike many other such orchestras, and this reason is given as to why they have developed a unique style. Michael Thomas encourages parents in Almería city to send their children for auditions for the various choirs and believes that music tuition in schools, whilst often good, is nothing like performing in front of thousands of people. New sponsorship is being sought for the orchestra and choir, who at present have no permanent rehearsal or practice space! It does not seem to deter them from embarking on ever more ambitious projects. Their next major concert is on April 24th. (See What’s On).

Distinguished International Artists have performed regularly with the main orchestra and choir including Vladimir Askenazy and his son Dimitri in 2008. In June 2009, a concert with Plácido Domingo attracted an audience of 3,500. Other famous artists, partly intrigued by the emergence of a “young” orchestra have included Svetlin Roussev, Ara Malikian, Chriophe Coin, Mei-Ting Sun and contemporary music giants including Joan Manuel Serrat and David Bísbal. Most of the success of the Orchestra is attributed to Michael Thomas from Middlesborough in the UK, who is the technical director and conductor, assisted by José Vélez, their artistic director. Michael Thomas started his musical career at the age of nine as a violinist and became the youngest member ever of the National Youth Orchestra. Circus Performances The ‘Horror Circus’ comes to Almería city on May 21st, 22nd and 23rd at the Maestro Padilla Auditorium. The show is called “Pshychosis” and is set in a cemetery in the 1800s. The circus company won a National circus prize in 2003. Performances take place at 9pm May 21st, 6.30pm and 10pm May 22nd and 5pm on May 23rd. What’s On Mojácar “Tunas” Fiesta 150 photos by Gustavo Gillman An exhibition of four artists is Mojácar is hosting a troubadour festival and competition April 16th -17th. The International event includes the troubadours performing in the village on the 16th, followed by a barbeque on the beach. The finalists will be judged on April 17th between 7pm and 10pm, and the prizewinners will be announced at 10.45pm. The group ‘Maguey’ will perform and all the troubadours will close the event.

Desert Film Photo Competition A photographic competition is being organized by the Tabernas film organization, which is inviting photographers to send in up to 3 photographs depicting the Tabernas desert and films undertaken in the area. A noted criminal defence lawyer was making his closing argument for his client accused of murder, although the body of the victim had never been found. The lawyer dramatically turned to the courtroom's clock and, pointing to it, announced, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I have some astounding news. The Heart Attack A blonde gets home from work early and hears strange noises coming from the bedroom. She rushes upstairs only to find her husband naked lying on the bed, sweating and panting. 'What's up?' she asks. 'I think I'm having a heart attack,' cries the husband. Buttercups and Golf Balls Towards the end of the golf course, Tom hit his ball into the woods and found it in a patch of pretty yellow buttercups. Trying to get his ball back in play, he ended up thrashing just about every buttercup in the patch.. All of a sudden... POOF! In a flash and puff of smoke, a little old woman appeared. She said, "I'm Mother Nature! Do you know how long it took me to make those buttercups? Just for doing what you have done, you won't have any butter for your popcorn for the rest of your life; better still, you won't have any butter for your toast for the rest of your life. As a matter of fact, you'll never have any butter for anything the rest of your life!" Then POOF! ... She was gone! After Tom recovered from the shock, he hollered for his friend, "Fred, where are you?" Fred yells back, "I'm over here in the pussy willow." Tom shouts back, 'DON'T SWING FRED; FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T SWING!!!'

A couple leave a wild party and set off speeding home in their sports car. The woman decides she wants some more fun and takes all her clothes off so she can flash at passers-by. Unfortunately her partner gets distracted by this and crashes the car. The naked woman is thrown clear but her partner is trapped. The woman goes for help, but the only item she can find to cover herself is one of her partner's shoes. She finds a garage and holds the shoe between her legs, yelling to a mechanic, "Help! Help! My boyfriend's stuck!" The mechanic looks her up and down and replies, "You're going to need a doctor, love, he's too far in!"

Hang Time An attorney arrived home late, after a very tough day trying to get a stay of execution. His last minute plea for clemency to the governor had failed and he was feeling worn out and depressed. As soon as he walked through the door at home, his wife started on him about, 'What time of night to be getting home is this? Where have you been? Dinner is cold and I'm not reheating it'. And on and on and on. Too shattered to play his usual role in this familiar ritual, he poured himself a shot of whiskey and headed off for a long hot soak in the bathtub, pursued by the predictable sarcastic remarks as he dragged himself up the stairs. While he was in the bath, the phone rang. The wife answered and was told that her husband's client, James Wright, had been granted a stay of execution after all. Wright would not be hanged tonight. Finally realizing what a terrible day he must have had, she decided to go up stairs and give him the good news. As she opened the bathroom door, she was greeted by the sight of her husband, bent over naked, drying his legs and feet. They're not hanging Wright tonight,' she said. He whirled around and screamed, "FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WOMAN, DON'T YOU EVER STOP?"
