Focus on Local News Cajamar-Rural The Cajamar-Rural group is now the largest “Caja” (savings bank) organization in Spain, having merged with many other entities. They make up 52% of these institutions in Spain with just over 50% of the transactions. The Bank of Spain has now given approval for the formation of a new main stream bank, to be known as the Banco de Crédito Social Co-operative or BCSC for short. It is intended that the new bank is operative by May. At present, some nineteen “cajas” are part of the group with another thirteen associates. The full range of bank services will be available once the new bank is in force. The new bank will become part of the Central European Bank organization that supervises banks in general.

A Useful Invention An Almería company, 'Estrategia Creativa', specializes in producing items that use a QR (Quick response code). Their latest product known as Codycode SOS, is a self adhesive QR code label with the capital letter “S” either side. This device is intended for use by cyclists, scooter or motorbike users, or skiers and mountaineers, with an adhesive strip designed to be stuck to a helmet, useful in case of an emergency such as serious injury. The QR code can be obtained from their webpage and coded by the user to give name and address, contact numbers, allergies and medication currently being taken, and any other information required. It is designed to be quickly read by police or medical personnel, particularly if the user is unconscious. The purchase price is 8 euros 95 Almería to Madrid céntimos and can be bought on-line. Bank Profits The Spanish and European Central Bank regulations put into place in 2012 and 2013 have made Spanish banks look hard at their investments, operation and reserves. The 2013 results show that the five major banks have increased their results by 7.6 billion euros. Banco Santander, not a bank that needed an injection of funds, show a 90% increase over 2012 to 4.3 billion euros. The BBVA bank improved by 33% to 2.2 billion euros. Banco Popular came back into the black with 325 million euros after a 2.4 billion loss in 2012.

Focus on Local News High Marks In the last quarter of 2013, some 4.2 million tourists came to Andalucía. Almería province attracted some 8 %, whereas Málaga received 29% and Granada 19%. Surveys are carried out regularly and marks awarded for various categories. In the surveys for this period, Almería province received high marks. The overall valuation was 8.6 points out of 10, the highest in Andalucía, where the total average was 8.1 out of 10. Golf courses in Almería province were given a rating of 9.2 out of 10, an extremely high mark, only surpassed by the rating for the Málaga port at 9.6. 'Key Mare' also have a 49% stake in the 'Codeur' multi-service company in Vera that administer water supplies and sewage treatment. Vera council own the remaining 51%. It is not yet clear what will happen to 'Codeur' as the 'Key Mare' stake is in the name of another company, 'Key Lanzarote', still technically solvent. 'Key Mare' had a 50% share in the Vera Hotel that went into liquidation last year. The construction company 'DRV', who also built many properties in Vera Playa went into liquidation previously.

Good & Bad Police dealing with trademark infringements in Roquetas recently raided a shop where fake designer clothes were being sold. Apart from the actual clothes with a total price of 3,000 euros, they also confiscated a heated press and over 100 fake adhesive logo labels, found in the rear of the shop. Plain clothed police had previously browsed round the shop. Unfortunately they also raided a well known and long established nearby shop in the same street selling genuine designer clothes with certificates and invoices proving their legal origin. It appeared that they went to the wrong shop! The owner has threatened legal action for defamation and loss of trade until the mistake was rectified, and confirmed by the police as being a “misunderstanding” in the local press.

A Step Nearer The second phase of the Mojácar beach promenade has been debated for many years. The proposal has now received the backing of the authority concerned with coastal development, known for short as “Costas”. The extension of the existing promenade is to be for a length of 880 metres. Included in the proposal are drainage, showers, lamp posts, seating and garden areas. This official publication and approval of the project does not mean that the work will start soon, but it is a big step in the right direction.

Focus on Local News Murcia Wins Battle Pressure from local and regional government and trade associations in Murcia has resulted in an important victory. Ana Pastor, the Minister for Transport has agreed that the Murcia “AVE” (high speed train) station will be built underground. This is a complete reversal of previous policy where the authorities stated that any underground station projects had to be financed locally. The high speed train is scheduled to reach Murcia city during 2015, and be in full operation before the end of the year. The underground cost is given as 280 million euros with a five kilometre tunnel. The proposals that the Almería station is put underground is also a subject of great debate, with no solution or firm plans at present. The predicted expense is similar to the Murcia project. Oops! Opposition councillors in Albox were not pleased when they saw a council truck and an employee cutting and pruning a very large creeper on a three storey building in a main street. They complained that the property belonged to a family member of a councillor of the political party in power. They also stated that official cars were regularly seen making trips to supermarkets, collecting olives, or on weekend trips (particularly to Mojácar beach bars), in the summer. They made an official complaint as a result. The mayor hit back denying that the property belonged to a family member, but then stated that anyone could ask for municipal assistance with the disposing of large quantities of garden waste. He said that the complaints were “sour grapes” after all the beneficial work done by the present council since they took office. Mojácar Oldies Mojácar council have started the necessary steps to open a residential home and day centre on municipal land. Rosa Maria Cano, the mayoress, stated that various private companies were interested in running such a centre, needed because 25% of the population were over the age

of 65. Work is also under way to provide 95 new niches at the municipal cemetery, designed to blend in with the existing facilities. The extensions have a budget of 60,000 euros.

Olive Oil A new regulation came into force on January 1st obliging hotels, bars and restaurants only to serve olive oil in non-refillable bottles or sachets that clearly stated where the virgin olive oil had been manufactured. There was a two month period in which this had to be done, so the regulations had to come into force completely by March 1st. The regulations are designed to safeguard the genuine virgin olive oil producers from inferior substitutes. Hotel and restaurant owners complain that this is just another expense that they can do without. Banned Drivers As of 1st January in Almería province, some 2,600 drivers had lost all their points and were therefore banned from driving. There are another 950 drivers who have only six points or less on their driving licences, and a third of these have less than three points. Letters are being sent out to these drivers making plain that only improved driving will stop further points being lost. 630 drivers have attended the necessary courses that lead to a restoration of their points, and can therefore drive again. Focus on Local News continued who have lost their licence are males, not just the young drivers. The most common infractions where points are lost are speeding and not wearing a seat belt. The use of mobile 'phones whilst driving is also the cause of lost points. Population Swings The population in this Levante region went up overall by 7,300 official inhabitants from 2008 to 2013 to a total of 95,800. Figures from the Spanish National Statistics office reveal that Los Gallardos has lost some 22% of their population, down at the end of 2013 to 2,800 inhabitants. Carboneras inhabitants have increased by 3%, but Mojácar is up by 23% to 8,300 persons. The non-Spanish population in Mojácar is now 60% of the total. Bédar now has 1,113 residents, slightly up in numbers, whilst Arboleas and Partaloa show a 20% rise during this period. Huércal-Overa has increased their inhabitants to 19,000, and Vera has 15,400. The largest number of inhabitants in Almería province as a whole is in Almería city with 192,000 registered persons, Roquetas with 87,000 and El Ejido with 82,000. All these figures are logged from the official number of residents who are on the municipal “padrón” lists (the official census of inhabitants). Consequently, numbers vary from these figures where inhabitants are not registered on the padrón. El Algarrobico Hotel The unfinished and now famous hotel El Algarrobico has recently been in the news again. The latest court case that is to decide if the original Carboneras council building licence was illegal will shortly be decided. If the building permission is ruled to be illegal there are probably not any other legal issues that will affect the future of the hotel, apart from demolition. Susana Díaz, the new president of the Junta de Andalucía ( the autonomous regional government for Almería province) has already started talking about the demolition. She has stated that the Junta is “firmly committed” to a future demolition. She further stated that the demolition and return of the land

to as close as possible to the original terrain would give employment to Carboneras. The mayor of Carboneras immediately hit back and reaffirmed the official council position from day one that the hotel should be finished and opened. He considers that this would be continuous employment for Carboneras and bring increased financial benefits, and previous plans for employment had come to nothing. He stressed again that when construction of the hotel was first started, it was considered that the building licence and project was legal at local level, county council level, Andalucía regional government level and Spanish and European planning regulations. The Junta de Andalucía had in fact originally promised a tourist development grant to Azata del Sol, the promoters and construction company who started the project.

Another Green Way Project The Almanzora local administration (Mancomunidad del Almanzora), made up of various councils, has had new expansion plans approved by the Department of the Environment. This is another extension of the Via Verde (green way) project where the former train lines and associated buildings, are converted for use by walkers and cyclists. There are now 50 kms available to residents and tourists who can use the former track, and the latest plans relate to the section from Alcóntar to Zurgena. Local town halls along the route are free to turn the associated stations and buildings into attractions such as the restaurant in Serón and railway

Focus on Local News continued museums. The original railway ran from Los Almendricos in Murcia province, through Almeria province to Guadix in Granada province. The new extension will see the combined pedestrian and cycle ways put in, the repair of any bridges or viaducts, and stop off points along the route. These sections of the former railway offer a rural journey that is full of reminders of the period when the railway was in use, and also provides some spectacular views. Company Fraud Specialized police working with the Social Security department regularly investigate fraudulent companies that only exist in paper form and claim a variety of subsidies. Last year the total fraud detected from such companies in Almería province amounted to 4 billion euros and one hundred and eleven people arrested. In February, thirteen people were arrested and another twenty six questioned in another scam that had defrauded the Social Services of a total of 153,000 euros. In this case the company had been set up by a Moroccan in Vicar. Special regulations for a startup company that gives employment allows for rebates of 400 euros initially, and then another 400 euros per month. In this case there were also claims for illness, lay-offs and maternity leave. Non-Spanish “employees” were also provided with false residency certificates. Social Security investigators were suspicious when the phantom construction company claimed that they mostly had female employees, a situation not normally applicable to construction companies! The company address was also fictitious. Electricity Costs About 50% of an electricity bill comes from the prices the electricity generating companies state they have had to pay at quarterly “auctions” (known as “spot” markets), for fuel costs for power stations that need fuel oil and coal to function. The Spanish Minister of Industry annulled the result of the auction last December that claimed a 23% rise in costs. This would have resulted in an

increase of 11% for customer bills from this January to March. José Soria has now revealed regulations that he intends to force on the supply companies. Basically, he wants the very fluctuating prices during one quarter to be averaged out and this price fixed for the next quarter. He also wants a mechanism put in place where consumers can sign up for a price that is guaranteed for the following year. The electricity supply companies are, of course, not happy. They say it is un-workable in practice.

Supermarket Mark-Ups The Almería associations of vegetable growers continually publish prices that show how much the growers receive for the sale of their products, and the price supermarkets sell them for. These surveys are designed to put pressure on supermarkets to reduce their selling prices, and hammer home to the general public that growers make only minimum profit. Price comparisons in January showed in many cases a higher mark-up than generally made in 2013. The survey gives various examples such as those for oranges. Growers only received 18 céntimos per kilo, but supermarkets generally sold the oranges for 1 euro 32 céntimos, a mark-up of 633%. Lemons purchased from the growers only resulted in a price of 31 céntimos, but the retail price was 1 euro 72 céntimos per kilo. Tomato prices always show a heavy mark-up but this January the difference in price was “only” 400%. This was

Focus on Local News continued better than last October when the mark-up peaked at 600% or last June when there was a 1000% mark-up in some supermarkets, put down to the start of the “salad season”. The association of growers are continually asking that a fair margin is determined by government regulations that fix the relative profit. The profit margins normally applied to eggs, milk products and olive oil are generally not more than double. Vegetable growers think that supermarket customers are being conned when they buy vegetables. Good Food Two long term Spanish surveys conducted by food scientists, dieticians and medical staff have caused an alarm at the World Health Organization. The surveys tracked the diet, health, and weight of children up to the age of one, and then between the age of one and three. The survey results were presented at the College of Medicine in Madrid. They showed that 95% of children between six months and three years of age were consuming double the amount of protein needed. This will almost certainly lead to obesity in later life that is now said to be a problem in a third of children in Spain up to the age of twelve. In the youngest of the children, a deficiency in iron was quite common. A lack of sufficient omega 3 can have an effect on the development of neurons in the brain. The overall advice that applies to all ages is that the perfect diet should include fish where the proteins are not absorbed by the body, eating fresh vegetables and fruit, along with a minimum of fatty foods, particularly “fast food”. Albox Protection Racket The mayor of Albox convened an extraordinary full council meeting recently after complaints that two local men were running a protection racket and demanding money from various businesses with the threat that if payment was not made there would be damage done to their premises. The council meeting unanimously approved a “denuncia” (official complaint) being made to a judge at the Huércal-Overa court. They are asking

for a restraining order and an immediate transfer to a prison whilst the complaint is investigated. Their other request is that the two men are compelled to leave the Albox area. Both the men have long criminal records including threats and extortion, and belong to a known clan. One man is aged 45 and the other is a member of his family. The mayor and police are asking that any of these threats are immediately reported to the authorities.

More Drugs In our February magazine we reported on the success of the specialized police units set up to combat the organized drugs trade. Just as we went to press another large ring was dismantled. In this case it was a gang based in El Ejido and Murcia. Cannabis resin was concealed in tractor trailer articulated lorries taking vegetables to Italy and Germany. 520 kilos of resin with a street value of 6 million euros was discovered in two lorries. Twenty members of the gang were arrested and items confiscated included four lorry tractor units, nine articulated trailers, nine cars, thirty three mobile 'phones and large quantities of money together with some small arm pistols. The arrests followed a nine month investigation code named “Oasis”. On February 14th a Turkish registered fishing boat, 'Berk Kaptan', was stopped by marine police and customs agents off the Almería coast and escorted to the port. 12 tonnes of drugs were found hidden in various parts of the boat. A Real Success The newly opened guitar museum in Almería city has already proved a major attraction to tourists, residents, and professional musicians. In the two months following the opening on December 20th nearly 3,000 visitors have come to the museum. At Last! A long running dispute at the airline company Iberia, owned by British Airways, has now come to an end. Strikes and walkouts by pilots and other staff have been common for several months. Iberia have introduced a low cost service Iberia Express and this has been at the hub of the dispute. Pilots have now signed an agreement to receive less money, and fly for the maximum hours permitted of 900 hours per year, some 37% more than the former flying time. Iberia Express want to be able to compete with Ryanair, Easyjet and the Spanish low cost company Vueling. Ground staff and check in staff have also agreed to new conditions and pay. Iberia also want to increase their flights from Europe to the Latin American countries, considered a boom market. On transatlantic flights the agreement is that there will now be two pilots instead of three.

Focus on Local News continued More Mojácar Parking The Almería Diputación Provincial (County Council) have approved a grant of 128,000 euros to provide 51 new parking places further along from the existing parking area in Mojácar, near the school and sports centre. A retaining wall has to be constructed with a raised platform for the vehicles and other work such as adequate drainage. There is still intense controversy regarding the 37 parking places in the underground parking area where the new square by the village church was created. The cost of all the work was just under 2 million euros. At a recent council meeting opposition councillors suggested that the 37 parking places where there has never been even a single car parked, should be rented out to permanent village residents at a cost of 50 euros per month. The mayoress chose not to include this proposal in the agenda at this council meeting.

The man grabbed the Yorkshire terrier “Goofy” belonging to another fan and threw in onto the pitch from a height of two metres. If the dog had been seriously injured a prison term of twelve months could have resulted. “Goofy” became an overnight International media sensation.

A Millennium Row This summer is the 1000th anniversary of the charter making Almería city a capital, and the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Almería museum. Meetings between government figures, the Junta de Andalucía and Almería council are taking place to decide how best to celebrate these anniversaries. A row has broken out between the Almería council and the Junta regarding the summer opening hours of the emblematic castle (the main tourist attraction) and the museum. At the height of the summer season from June 15th to September 15th the Junta wants the castle to be open during the daytime and only on the evenings of Thursday to Saturday from 8pm 10m. Hours suggested for the museum are 10am5pm. The employees and the city council consider that these hours are completely insufficient. After another row last year the castle was open every evening from 6.30pm-10pm during the high season. It seems that another change in hours will now apply. Extended opening hours result in larger numbers of visiting tourists. It is intended during 2014 and 2015 that major celebrations take place to record the anniversaries of these attractions.

Smart ‘Phones Spain now has smart 'phone mobiles that make up 66% of all the mobile 'phones in use. This puts Spain top of the list of the five major European countries. The UK has 64%, France 53%, Italy 53% and Germany only 51%. Incoming tourists to Spain made 7% of their bookings via a smart 'phone in 2013, and this is predicted to rise to 15% this year and 20% in 2020. An American, Aaron Montgomery Ward (1844-1913) worked for the Marshall Field department store in Chicago as a stores clerk, and then as a travelling salesman. He realized that the wide population of rural customers could be better served by providing them with written information on assorted goods that could be delivered by mail. He started his own business with 2,400 dollars that he had saved up. His first product list fitted on just one sheet of paper, together with ordering instructions. As the business developed his lists became a catalogue, filled with a large variety of items and his rural customers loved the idea. Naturally, he included the popular purchase of guns in his mail order catalogue! The Spanish Coat of Arms

In 1981 the present Spanish coat of arms (El Escudo de España) was adopted, differing from the 1977 version. The main shield is divided into four quarters that represents the four main kingdoms of Spain that merged in the 15th century. The castle represents Castile, the lion León, the red and yellow bars Aragon, and the chained design, Navarre. At the bottom is a recognition of the Christian kingdom of Granada, depicted as a pomegranate. The round central fleur-de-lis symbol is for the royal house of Bourbon. The side pillars represent the mythological Pillars of Hercules (at the Strait of Gibraltar) considered in olden times the end of the known world. The name arose around 1940 from the appearance of a diver in a shiny dry suit and large flippers. It applies to persons who scuba dive or swim underwater. Military organizations often call their frogmen “combat divers”. Typically, a frogman uses a closed circuit oxygen re-breathing equipment and will stay within a depth limit of 20 feet (6.1mts) with limited deeper excursions to a maximum of 50 feet (15 mts) because of the risk of acute oxygen toxicity, known as “the bends”. The use of nitrox or mixed gas re-breathers can extend this depth range considerably. In Britain, a policeman needed to search underwater for a body and went home to get his sport scuba gear, resulting in official specialized “police frogmen” units.

Whales

Whales belong to a species called Cetaceans and are large mammals. Dolphins and porpoises are still technically whales, but much smaller. Like other mammals, whales have to come to the surface to breath, often about every ten minutes. A large sperm whale is able to stay underwater for two hours, but has sucked in 2,000 litres of air in two seconds while surfacing. Whales nurse their babies with their own rich milk, and blue whale “babies” are six to seven metres long when born. They can gain 100 kgs per day, for up to twelve months. When fully grown they can be 30m long and weigh 150 tonnes. They eat krill, shrimp-like creatures and when they are most active, a large one eats up to four tonnes a day. Circular Saws

Tabitha Babbitt (1784-1854) from Massachusetts invented several products. In 1813 she designed a large steam driven circular saw for use in lumber yards where traditionally two men used “pit saws” to cut through the logs, which was hard, slow work. Her basic design was improved for general wood working businesses where fine adjustment of the saw blades and guides produced beams and planks of exactly the same dimensions. This made the construction of wooden houses much easier. Eventually portable saw tables were made, to be taken to a building site. With electricity, hand held circular saws powered by a small motor became indispensable for carpenters and joiners. The Hollywood Walk of Fame

A pavement along Hollywood boulevard and Vine street is embedded with more than 2,300 five pointed stars featuring the names of human celebrities, and also fictional characters. They are selected by the Hollywood chamber of commerce to honour their contributions to the entertainment industry. A self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust maintains the stars in good condition. The first eight stars were put down in 1958, but now the total length is 3.5 miles or 5.6km. Spanish actors Antonio Banderas and Antonio Moreno have stars, as well as singers Julio Iglesias and Plácido Domingo. Almería city has started their own pavement stars in recognition of directors and film stars who have had a major contribution to films made in the province.

Insurance for young drivers in their own name is very costly, along with many restrictions. There may be a complete refusal until a two year period has elapsed after obtaining a licence, or being a certain age. Another common restriction in the UK has been that the vehicle could not be used between 11pm and 5am, or a limit on mileage Very sophisticated tracking devices are now either mandatory for young drivers, or are offered with a premium discount. These “black boxes” have been considerably improved from the early basic ones. They now include a GPS device that sends data to a satellite link and then down to the manufacturers central electronic storage point. They continually monitor the time of day or night, the location of the road and normal traffic density, rapid acceleration or braking and even the observance of speed limits. These devices are now the same size as a smart 'phone and are virtually indestructible and water proof. Nominated specialist centres will

The Spanish insurance company 'Mapfre' started using the simpler devices some years ago, and now state that 40% of their insured drivers below the age of thirty have taken advantage of their “VCar” policies that give an initial 5% discount. It will send out an automatic GPS call to the 112 emergency services if the occupant has not cancelled the panic button within sixty seconds, mandatory from 2015 in all EU vehicles. In France, these units often include cameras, with a recorded image, but are illegal in Spain under privacy and data protection laws. Critics say that any vehicle tracker device is a “big brother” intrusion on the privacy of the driver, but they do work and save money and lives.

Changes in IVA (Vat) in 2014

n September 2012, the Spanish rates of “IVA” (VAT) were changed quite dramatically. The 18% rate was increased to 21% and applies to the majority of items including electricity, telephone, gas, petrol and diesel, (ignoring the other special fuel taxes) and new vehicles. A major hike from the old 8% rate to the new 21% applied to cinema, theatre and concert tickets, hair and beauty services, and funeral expenses. Pressure on the government from the businesses concerned with the major rise for “culture” activities, is being considered “soon” for a reduction to the lower 10% rate. Amongst other items, transport, bar and restaurant prices, and water bills went up from the old 8% to 10%. The IVA on new house purchases also became 10% on January 1st 2013.

Problems arise if bills with IVA have been sent out, but not paid at the end of a quarter. The IVA balance still has to be paid to the tax authority, whether it has been received or not.

Following the financial crisis in the Euro zone, the EU finance experts are continually monitoring the economy and growth in countries such as Spain. They make “strong recommendations” and the Spanish Minister of the Economy, Luis de Guindos, is coming under regular and increasing pressure to raise the 21% rate to perhaps 23%, with consequent rises in the lower rates. He has consistently promised in the Spanish parliament that he will not do this, but there is talk of some of the lowest 4% rated items being raised to 10%, and some 10% rated goods up to the 21% level. Whether he will have to give in later this year remains to be seen, but it's not good for votes!

The new system from January 1st is called “IVA de caja”. Small businesses or the self employed can now opt into this system where they can delay paying IVA to the “Hacienda” that they have put on bills or invoices until it has been paid to them. Similarly, if they have an incoming bill with IVA and have not yet paid this themselves, this unpaid IVA cannot be deducted from the total they pay to the tax authorities. Businesses have until March 31st to decide (or be advised by their accountant) if they wish to opt into this more complicated scheme. At the other end of the scale there are generous tax allowances for persons legally resident in Spain. For Almería or another province in this Andalucía autonomous region, their regulations apply to these provinces. A person living in the Murcia region will find there are differences. In Andalucía, official residents can be entitled to between 95% and 99.9% tax relief in certain cases. If a person who is an official resident is leaving property to their spouse or children who are also official residents and they have all lived in the family home for three years, you get the top rate of relief. (Official residents must have been residents for three years as well). Of course, there are various other conditions. The 50% of the estate (assuming

joint ownership) has to be below 500,000 euros. Each inheritor can only inherit a sum less than 175,000 euros. There is then a reduction of 99.9% up to a maximum of 120,000 euros, so there may be no tax, or some to pay on the balance. If the total is over 500,000 euros, or an individual inheritance is more than 175,000 euros, none of these special exemptions apply. Afterwards, the inheritors with the high tax relief cannot sell the property for ten years. A clause known as a “usufructo”, put in any will, entitles the surviving spouse to stay in the property until they die themselves. These “typical” cases may not apply to many other individuals at all! To find your own solutions or tax breaks, expert advice is essential. As Spain allows marriages between same-sex persons, similar calculations apply. Non-married couples, however long the partnership has existed, do not receive any special inheritance tax relief, but there may be a solution. Most municipalities in Spain keep a legal register of same-sex or opposite sex non-married partnerships and will inscribe such couples in this register if requested, as being a “Pareja de hecho”. In Andalucía there are tax breaks regarding inheritance for these registered persons, similar to those for married couples. Ask the questions! Make a will! What’s On Ballet The Víctor Ullate Internationally famous ballet company perform “Jaleos” “Y” & “Après toi” on March 21st at 9.30pm, Auditorio Maestro Padilla, Almería city. Tickets are 20 & 23 euros.

Theatre “Jornadas de Teatro del Siglo de Oro de Almería XXX1” is a travelling theatre and cultural event subsidised by various bodies, designed to bring these events to various municipalities. It comes to Olula del Rio on March 17th, VélezRubio March 18th, Fiñana March 20th, Cuevas del Almanzora March 20th, and Huércal-Overa on April 9th. Cinema Huércal-Overa are showing a series of films in their original English language. “The Hobbit” is on T h u r s d a y , M a r c h 13 t h . Performances start at 8pm at the municipal cinema. Ticket prices are a nominal amount.

Aguilas Carnival The assorted carnival events started on February 27th. The large processions are on Sunday, March 2nd; Tuesday, March 4th; & Saturday, March 8th, all starting off from 6pm. Fireworks ends the carnival on March 8th at midnight

What’s On Tourist Festival La Feria Turismo del Almanzora is a tourist related event to be held in the old railway station at Zurgena on March 15th & 16th. It is designed to link all the tourist attractions in the area with cultural, gastronomy, nature activities, rural tourism, and round table meetings. There will be food promotions and bar and restaurant space. Anybody or p e r s o n th a t wa n t s to b e represented can contact the Zurgena councillor for tourism, Sampo Kullervo Penttila, at a cost of 50 euros.

Exhibitions The painter, Francisco Alcaraz, has 60 of his paintings on exhibition until March 10th in Almería city. Now aged 88 he is considered one of the most important painters from Almería province and has won many awards and held exhibitions throughout the world. He is considered as important as Picasso. The exhibition can be seen in El Patio de Luces exhibition area of the Almería Diputación building, Navarro Rodrigo 17, Almería city. Open, Mon - Fri, 10am-8pm.

2014 “Itinerarte” travelling Contempor y Ar t exhibition organized by the Junta de Andalucía. This features 41 works by 8 artists. The exhibition can be seen January 29th - March 9th at the Teatro Municipal, Almocíta. March 9th-April 27th at the Aula Polivante de la Escuela de Cine, Tabernas. May 7th- June 15th at the Sala Exposiciones, Purchena. “Historia del Carnaval en La Comarca del Levante Almeriense” is an exhibition of carnival related items from this Levante region. The exhibition is at the Mojácar Centro Municipal de Arte, beside the village fuente. It can be seen until March 15th on

Picasso. An exhibition of 51 rare works and techniques by Picasso can be seen in Almería city until March 24th. The collection included c e r a m i c s , e n g r av i n g s , a n d lithographs, and illustrates the use of a variety of artistic mediums. The exhibition has been organized by the 'Unicaja' art foundation and can be seen at their cultural gallery, Centro Unicaja de Cultura, 11 Paseo de Almería, Almería city. Open Mon - Sat, 11am-2pm, and every evening except Saturday, 6pm-9pm.
