YEAR IN REVIEW YOUR IMPACT IN 2020
The storm that was 2020 taught us so much. We learned how much we need our families, our schools and our community. We learned to value the people who leaned in and worked beyond their limits. Health care workers, teachers, mental health providers, grocery store clerks, public health professionals, and so many more. We learned that our CAP mentors believe in their students and will adapt to make sure they can be there when their students need them most. Our Thrive team stepped up to make sure that all kids had access to remote learning and parents had the support they needed to juggle all of their new duties. Thrive paid out over $25,000 to keep families in their homes after job losses and keep food on their tables. When I reflect back on 2020 for Thrive, I am so incredibly proud of the work we did and the resiliency of the parents and kids who weathered this storm. I am thankful for the donors who believe in our work and the impact Thrive has in our community. I am proud of our hard-working staff who were not only in very tough positions taking care of their own families, but simultaneously caring for many families in crisis. It was a storm none of us had weathered before and none of us would ever hope to weather again, but we learned. We learned the sun will always shine again and when we all work together, anything is possible.

CORAL’S STORY Coral came to Thrive five years ago when she was pregnant with her first baby, Aurora. She had moved to Bozeman to be near her mother who was sick with cancer, leaving the rest of her family behind in Michigan. For the first two years of her life, Aurora was meeting all her developmental milestones when tragedy struck and her father died very suddenly due to a heart problem. Aurora stopped talking at two years old. Aurora’s mother and doctors weren’t sure if the trauma from her father’s death was a factor in her sudden loss of speech skills. After the father’s death, Coral found herself as a single mother but she had an incredible job at Ford. They were very supportive of Coral and gave her the flexibility and steady income she needed. She came back to Thrive when she got pregnant with her second child. Shortly after finding out she was pregnant, tragedy struck again, the father of her baby was arrested at her house. Coral knew that she was perfectly capable of raising her children alone but wanted additional support to ensure they were safe and taken care of, so she came to Thrive for the support that she knew she would need as a single mom. Aurora was now 3 and professionals had been telling Coral that the issues she having with Aurora were behavioral. After she met with Steph, her new Family Support Worker at Thrive she began to understand that perhaps what was happening with Aurora was developmental. With Steph’s help, she was able to get Aurora the screenings she needed to get Aurora into speech and occupational therapy and a more appropriate daycare setting through a childcare scholarship.
As Coral was preparing to give birth to her second child all alone. Steph offered to be with her during her birth so she had a support system during such an important time for young mothers. Kingsley, Coral’s new baby, is doing great and developing on track due to Thrive’s ongoing developmental screenings. Everything seemed to be going very well when Coral discovered she had a swollen lymph node. She was AURORA terrified. She went to the doctor and they confirmed that Coral had stage 4 Lymphoma. Coral didn’t know what to do and was afraid that she would lose her two children under five due to not being able to take adequate care of them while battling cancer. She didn’t even have the transportation the doctor said was required to undergo her treatments. Steph, her Thrive Family Support worker, immediately began working with Coral to figure out this next challenge. Thrive staff setup a meal train to make sure the family had meals and offered to drive her to bi-weekly cancer treatments. Steph even arranged for the children to be picked up from daycare to give Coral some time to rest after each of her treatments. Thrive was able to get her connected with the social worker at the hospital and secure financial assistance for Coral’s expensive cancer treatments. Coral has now been undergoing cancer treatment for 4 months and continues to take care of her children with the supports Thrive helped her put in place. Aurora's expressive vocabulary is increasing daily with the help of weekly speech therapy and her behaviors are decreasing. Their future as a family looks brighter each day.

“Thrive is for any parent that needs additional support. Working with the Partnership Program has helped me make a parenting plan, connected me with doctors, helped me with my bills, and they’ve recently helped me set up my medical plan. It has just been fantastic the support this program has given me and my two kids. The program has been accepting about a lot of things in my life, I feel like I can talk to my FSW (Family Support Worker) about anything. She’s more than just someone to connect me to outside services, she cares about what is going on in my life and my mental state. I’ve also learned so much about being the best parent I can be for my new baby. The help at Thrive has just been fantastic.” ~ Stephanie, Partnership Mother

100% of Love and Logic® parents said taking the class helped them parent more effectively
“Our family started in elementary school with Love and Logic® and then did Love and Logic® in middle school as well, then we were having some issues in school knowing our Parent Liaison helped me so much. It was a neutral party to talk to and help us with the issue we were having. It’s so important for families to know they have someone that is outside of the school but also close partners of the school that can support parents and look at challenges from all different perspectives and really help parents. Our situation in particular was so challenging and having a voice on our side meant a lot. I felt like I wasn’t alone and had someone that would listen to us, be neutral, hear all parties involved out and also help come to a resolution. Thrive also continued helping us by giving us additional resources afterwards, they attended meetings with us and helped us all get on the same page and some added accountability for everyone. I’m a big proponent of Thrive programs, it’s so important for families. Thrive really stepped up for our family, I can’t say enough good things about Thrive.” ~ Anonymous parent 2020

THRIVING INTO THE FUTURE A Place to Thrive - Our Capital Campaign Thrive is setting the anchor! After being bounced around and paying rent for the past 35 years we have finally found a permanent home. At the end of 2020, one of the most difficult years in Thrive’s history, we were offered a $1.5M match gift to purchase a building. Due to the generosity of our donors, funders and business partners we were able to outright purchase the Red Chair building here in Bozeman. After construction is finished on our new home at 407 S. Ferguson (next to the Ridge) we will be excited to show you around. Thrive will be creating a community hub where parents can come for developmental and social emotional screenings for their kids. Parents can come and hang out at The Thrive Hive (our early childhood learning lab) and learn parenting strategies, learning activities for the littles, and resources for kids of all ages. Our mentors will now have a place for trainings and mentor connections. All for free! We are currently raising the funds to renovate the project and are already 70% of the way to our goal! If you would like to help make this happen for our community please visit allthrive.org/place to donate and learn more.
