A PRESENT FOR SANTA
C
hristmas was coming, and Pinkie the Elf still didn’t know what to get Santa. She had the box and the paper and the ribbon, a tag made out with his name in the her best handwriting. But what to put inside the box? A robe, she thought, to keep him warm on chilly North Pole nights. No, he already had one, a cheery red one Mrs. Claus got him. A new teacup? A puppy? A plate of cookies? None of those seemed right either. It was a gift for Santa. It had to be perfect. Then she remembered what Santa really wanted. He wanted peace on Earth, for all to be kind to each other in troubled times. So she gave Benny the Elf a hug when he seemed sad. She helped Grandma Elf carry her packages to Santa’s sleigh. She said kind words instead of sharp ones. And when Christmas Eve came and Santa was ready to go off and deliver presents to all the children of the world, she gave Santa a small box, wrapped up and tied with a bow. And inside was a little note that read, in her very best handwriting, I love you. “Thank you,” he said with a smile. “It’s exactly what I wanted.”
