Santa’s Stop Watch S

omething seemed off to Santa.

The beaches were warm, but there weren’t many people on them.

Everywhere he went, there was Christmas music playing. “It can’t be Christmas yet,” he said, taking out his pocket watch. “My vacation isn’t over.

Why, it’s still 2 o’clock on July 1!”

He went swimming and treated himself to an ice cream cone.

He played some shuffleboard and did a crossword puzzle in a beach chair. He looked at his pocket watch again, wondering when it would be time for dinner. It was still 2 o’clock on July 1.

“Funny,” said Santa. “It was 2 o’clock an hour ago.”

He held the watch up to his ear. It was no longer making that familiar ticking noise. “Oh my!” said Santa. “I’m late for Christmas Eve!” He hurried home to the North Pole, where he found the elves working hard to make all the toys for the good children of the world.

The whole house smelled of freshly baked cookies, and his red suit was pressed and ready to wear. Mrs. Claus had put the reindeer in their harnesses, and his bag was waiting in the sleigh for him when he emerged from the workshop.

He gave her a kiss and got in the sleigh. He flew around the world, delivering toys and good cheer, checking his list one extra time to make sure he hadn’t made any mistakes.

And when he got home in the early morning hours, Mrs. Claus was waiting up for him. He was very tired, but she brought him a plate of dinner she’d kept warm in the oven. “I have a present for you,” she said.

She handed him a box, wrapped in red and gold. He opened it up and inside was his pocket watch, ticking away.

“You fixed it!” he said. “Now I never have to worry about being late for Christmas again.”
