Chamber’s New Look Ready For Induction 2017
T
he renovations to the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerece will be completed in time for Induction Weekend, according to Matt Hazzard, Executive Director. The exterior has been painted, and new front steps are in the process of being finished ahead of the weekend. The Chamber is still open, and until the steps are finished, visitors are encouraged to use the back entrance. SABR SOARS: After induction, take in the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR) and CBS’ Jonah Keri, SI’s Jay Jaffe, the New York Times’ Richard Sandomir and others meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St. PLAY BALL: Hall of Famers Randy Johnson and Ryne Sandberg will join Ozzie Smith as part of his “Play Ball” game at 8 a.m. Friday, July 28, to benefit the Baseball Hall of Fame’s educational programs. PERFECT DAY: The weather for Induction Day on Sunday, July 30 is anticipated to be sunny with a high of 76.

BUD SELIG: Made Baseball More Profitable, Less Popular By JIM KEVLIN COOPERSTOWN
E
d Stack knows MLB commissioners. A fledgling accountant with The Clark Foundation in the 1950s, “I was young, very young, and Ford Frick took a liking to me,” Stack remembered the other day. Frick’s office was in Rockefeller Center, as was the Clark Foundation’s. “He ate every day in the same place around the corner,” and he would ask the young man to join him. As Stack rose to director (the equivalent of today’s president)
of the Baseball Hall of Fame, he found himself working ever more closely with such legendary personalities as Bowie Kuhn, Peter Ueberroth, Bart Giamatti, Fay Vincent and, yes, Bud Selig, who will be inducted into the Hall of Plaques this Sunday, June 30. Selig joined the Hall of Fame board in 1976, well before he became acting commissioner in 1992, and thus an ex officio member. n early September 2001, Ted Spencer, then Baseball Hall of Fame chief curator, took several staff members to meet Rachel Robinson at the offices of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which provides educational support for minority students. “I’ve met a lot of people, but she took my breath away,” said Spencer. “It was like meeting George Washington or Abe Lincoln. She was very open, very warm. And

sitting there with her was one of the great thrills of my life.” The widow of the history-making Brooklyn Dodger – she is now 95 – will be honored as the fourth recipient of the John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award for integrity, dignity and broadening baseball’s appeal. “Rachel Robinson has worked tirelessly to raise the level of equality not only in baseball, but throughout society,” said Hall of Fame chairman Jane Forbes Clark in announcing the award. “Through her grace, dignity and unsurpassed spirit, she continues to show the value, decency and importance of inclusiveness.
