Buttermann is once again organizing TEDx Oneonta on Friday, Sept. 14, this time at SUNY Oneonta’s Goodrich Theater. “We had

such a good turnout last year (at Foothills) and there was so much brainstorming afterwards,” he said.

“We wanted to build on last year’s theme, ‘Tipping Point’.”

Buttermann also hosted the TEDx Women’s conference in November, with the

theme of “Bridges.”

This year’s theme is “Connect,” inspired by post-Talk conversations and Buttermann’s experience at TEDFest. “When we connect people to ideas, we create new ideas,” he said.

“And those new ideas create value.”

This year, 60 speakers applied, double the number from last year. “There’s a lot more interest,” he said.

“We found speakers who have an idea that they want to spread in a place where it can move.”

Among the speakers is Ricardo Sierra, Cherry Valley, who founded the Hawk Circle Wilderness Education Summer Camp Program in 1989 and the Earth Mentoring Institute in 1999 to help children and teens connect with nature. His talk is

titled, “Saving I-Gen Children: Why Grandparents Might Be Our Best Choice To Solve The Digital Age Crisis.”

“All of our speakers have experience with what they’re talking about,” said Buttermann.

Also speaking is Maja Kazazic, an internationally recognized motivation speaker who, after losing her left leg in rocket-propelled grenade attack during the Bosnian genocide, fled her homeland, learned to speak English and started a software company. Her talk, “Genocide and Happiness: The Power of You” will focus on overcoming adversity.

The conference will start at 6 p.m. with a brief history of TED Talks, followed by the talks themselves and an

intermission, where activities will help attendees share ideas amongst themselves.

“Last year, we had it at Foothills, so people could gather around tables,” said Buttermann. “Since it’s at Goodrich, we’ll have a longer intermission, with food, so people will keep talking.”

Following the intermission, more talks will be given, and the conference will wrap up with more engagement exercises. “It’s about the same time commitment as a concert,” he said.

Though last year’s TEDx Oneonta was free, this one costs $25, which Buttermann says will help fund future conferences.

“You get ideas by sharing ideas,” he said. “Connecting with others is easier than it might seem.”

Freshmen Get Letters From Former Dorm Room Occupants DORM/From A1 had lived in Littell 148 during his freshman year in 2012. “Congratulations,” he

“We had the idea that it would be cool for students to hear from alumni,” said Lisa Miller, director of marketing for the college.

“And we thought it would be cool for alumni to share their memories.

Miller put out a call on Facebook, and 70 alumni wrote in, including six employees. Several joined forces with their roommate to write a letter.

“My roommate Ryan and I lived together every year,” said Sutton. “Our room was the main hangout for our group of friends. We’d stay up all night, talking and

Sutton, who graduated in 2016, now runs the college’s “Making Cent$” program, which helps students learn about budgeting, credit scores, student loan repayments and other financial planning.

Davies, South Glens Falls, is majoring in Communication Studies with the hopes of becoming a state trooper. His roommate, Justin Wittington, was a friend from high school. “It worked out that we got put in a room together,” said Davies.

The oldest letter was from a woman who lived in Littell in 1965, who wrote that, despite living halfway across the country from one another, she still keeps in contact with one of her roommates from that room and tries to see her once a year.

And some new students got more than one letter.

Abby and Sarah, Littell 303 in 2012, both wrote letters, recalling eating Chinese food together in their dorm and watching movies.

Littell 104 also had double letters; one from an alumni who lived there in 1967 and another from a 2015 resident.

“My wish to you, as you sit in our room, is that you

can still hear our sweet harmony singing one of our favorite Leonard Cohen songs, ‘Suzanne,’” wrote Janet Lynn Allen, ‘71. “And that you find as good a lifelong friend as I did in Alison.”

Others wrote lists of Oneonta “To-Do” ideas, including lunch at the Yellow Deli, College Camp and coffee at the Latte Lounge.

Others sent pictures of what the dorm looked like when they had it.

And some, like Sutton, hoped that the new occupants wouldn’t make the mistakes the old occupants did. “Ryan and I were not the cleanest people,” he wrote. “Neither of us ever wanted to take the recycling bin to the trash room, so it would become a mountain of empty bottles and packages.”

“We would play a game where we would throw bottles from the desk into the bin,” he said. “When they got to where we couldn’t throw any more in, we’d take it to the garbage room.”

Sutton and Davies got to meet on Sunday, Aug, 26, when Davies attended “Making Cent$.” “I told them about living in Littell and how I was still close with Ryan,” said Sutton.

hen one least expects it, a breakthrough.

The Town of Oneonta’s Board of Fire Commissioners has voted, 3-2, to set a hearing to consider dissolving. The vote could come at the end of the hearing, scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Elm Park Methodist Church.

Good idea. About time.

If the fire district is dissolved, a “fire zone” continues to exist within the town, so coverage will continue.

The Town of Oneonta would assume responsibility for negotiating with the city.

t is with sadness that her friends at this newspaper, and the many among our subscribers, bid farewell this week to Catherine “Cathe” Lake Ellsworth, who for 34 years has shouldered the weekly joys and burdens of our historic “Where Nature Smiles” column.

Cathe, first with husband Jerry and, since his passing at a too-young 53 in 1999, on her own, has delivered always thought-provoking – and often piquant – insights into village life and the state of the world in general.

A tenure of more than three decades has allowed her to provide context on current issues unavailable anywhere else. Plus, Cathe has been fearless – an authentic voice that will be missed.

criminal prosecutions. The practice of quietly transferring the offending cleric to another parish is no longer viable. Nevertheless, the Church’s efforts to date are far from adequate.

The focus of the Church’s reforms has been on detection and turning over to civil authority those identified as a threat to the wellbeing of children. To that end, they have undertaken a massive training effort to sensitize the clergy, employees and volunteers to recognize and report such threats.

Nevertheless, this is

analogous to locking the barn door after the horse has gotten out. The damage has already been done.

What is needed is a proactive effort to identify potential predators before they are ordained. In that way, the threat to children is neutralized safely. The Church has demonstrated a willingness to invest financial resources to this issue.

A battery of psychological tests and evaluations should be administered to every man aspiring to ordination as deacon or priest.

Such evaluations should be

conducted independent of Church oversight and the recommendations should be binding and without appeal.

While contrite public statements from bishops are superficially comforting, actions speak louder than words. Jesus said the shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. It is past time for the bishops of the Roman Catholic Church to demonstrate that level of dedication to those whose spiritual and moral wellbeing has been entrusted to them.

In January of this year, we were approached by the State of New York to see if we had an available site with the necessary JODY infrastructure (i.e.

The company would have employed 175 people to start – or as one of my board members correctly points out, 175 families. We couldn’t supply the required natural gas or electric. In researching the history of the lack of available gas, it became evident that this problem has existed for years.

Readers Kept Ellsworths Going With Much Appreciated Suggestions COLUMN/From A4 dinners we enjoyed with friends and family at any number of restaurants in the area.

Our many trips to Pop’s Place usually ended with delicious ice cream. Taking in the “International Dinners” at the Hawkeye introduced us to cuisines we would never have experienced otherwise.

The view while lunching at the Blue Mingo has always been one of our favorites. And we thoroughly enjoyed our weekly take-out dinners from the China Wok, although we must admit we always seemed to find ourselves puzzling over the fortunes we found in the fortune cookies.

To say that we greatly enjoyed eating our way through the restaurants of Cooperstown is probably an understatement.

• Of course, we were most proud when our son, Christopher, a member of the CCS Class of 1992, became a third-generation graduate of Cooperstown Central School.

His grandfather, Charles D. Ellsworth, graduated in 1925.

His grandmother, Enid Brady Ellsworth, graduated in 1930. And his father, Gerald B. Ellsworth, graduated in 1965.

The Ellsworth roots do indeed run deep in Cooperstown. And nothing bespeaks of that more than the fact that we lived our entire time in Cooperstown in the home on Pioneer Street which was built in 1912 by the he-we’s grandparents, Gerald D. and Maude Ellsworth. The home has indeed served the Ellsworth family well.

And without doubt, writing a weekly newspaper column for some 34 years has to have been one of the greatest highlights of our time here. We note that on Jan. 4, 1984, when Cooperstonians opened their copies of The Freeman’s Journal to page two, they found themselves reading: “We thought this was an excellent time of year to take a stab at continuing a column which appeared in The Freeman’s Journal for more years than we can remember. In the first place, all those many organizations that you may from time to time connect us with tend to take a break for the holidays leaving us with something we are not accustomed to, namely free time. We had to find something to do.

In effect, those revenues – insurance payments generated whenever a city ambulance carries a patient from either the city or town to Fox or Bassett – pay down the total, meaning there’s less for city taxpayers and fire-district property owners to split.

The bloc believes the way it’s being done is illegal, but so far hasn’t found anyone with authority to agree.

Again, if an “i” or two needs to be crossed to bring everything up to Hoyle, Bob Wood has the understanding to figure it out amicably with Herzig.

• There are implications for the future.

For one, a town can’t operate its own fire department under New York State law, an option the fire commissioners have been threatening to pursue in negotiations with City Hall.

However, if it came to that, the town could create a town-wide fire district that

could do so, a lengthy process – but slower is probably better. Plus, that may never happen and shouldn’t – the town and city’s fates are linked.

Arguably, given the $1 million contribution from townsfolks, it makes sense for a liaison to be brought into discussions with Common Council on policies regarding the OFD. Perhaps Al Rubin, who has tried to be an honest broker since joining the fire board, would be a good prospect for this role.

Regardless, it’s time to move forward. If the majority-bloc fire commissioners have concluded they can do no more, it makes sense to leave the scene.

The Oneonta Town Board is more sensitive to what the public wants – only a handful or two of voters turn up at Fire District elections – and the public has said it wants the standoff resolved.

With Wood at the helm, along with town board members of good will, an end to a worrisome situation may finally be within reach.

Rising To The Fly On Natural Gas

O

ne of the main reasons that local brook trout don’t get very big is that they tend to rise to and take the first dry fly that is drifted over them.

During my professional career, I have avoided “rising to the fly,” but my fellow columnist, Adrian Kuzminski, in his Aug. 23-24, 2018 article, floated one that was just too tempting. He was commenting on my article the week before, where I stated, “To date, we don’t know if those green plants, found on land and in fresh and marine waters, aren’t able to process the carbon dioxide that is being produced. If there was more of it, could green plants produce more oxygen and sugar, or if there was more than MIKE they could process would it affect ZAGATA the climate? Answering those questions will take some good minds and pretty heavy-duty computers.”

He twisted that to read, “Zagata admits as much by worrying if plant growth will absorb the extra CO2”.

So it’s time, once again, to look at the science.

• Natural gas is the cleanest burning fuel.

It produces CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water) when it is burned. That is exactly what animals, including us, do during the process of respiration. We take in food, digest it, and, in the presence of O2 (oxygen), burn it in our cells to produce energy needed to sustain us and CO2 and H2O are

the waste products. Our blood carries the dissolved CO2 to our lungs and we exhale it and also inhale new Oxygen. Some of the dissolved water also gets exhaled and some gets filtered out by our kidneys and leaves our body as urine.

That means that each of us are polluters – we emit the same gases that are produced when we burn natural gas. We also pollute when we create mulch piles or manure piles or eat beans, as they give off methane as a byproduct of decomposition.

• Many homes in our area heat with propane – a heavier version of methane that also yields CO2 and H2O when burned – and it is transported to our homes by truck.

We drive to our meetings in cars fueled by gasoline, a fossil fuel, to plan on how to best protest against the next attempt to bring energy into our area – and these protests are not limited to just fossil fuels. We have protested against renewable energy sources as well, including wind turbines and biomass.

It is likely that, once we realize just how visually unattractive solar farms are and how much they adversely impact farmland, forests and wildlife habitat, we will protest against them as well.

County Energy Crisis Is Here, Now

ZAKREVSKY/From A4 New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) to express our concern and disappointment with the lack of service to our county. Not only do they hold the franchise for natural gas and electric in our region, they were granted rate hike increases to replace the main gas line from Norwich to Oneonta to alleviate this problem.

The project never happened, though residents are still paying for the project. The president of NYSEG himself promised to have his best people look into finding a solution – first for gas, and then electric.

Otsego Now met with various companies trying to find its own solution. One company indicated it could build a de-compressed gas facility in our industrial park to handle the needs for the company looking to expand for about $1 million.

We were then approached by a consortium of businesses known as the “interruptible supply group” that had read we were meeting with NYSEG concerning the lack of gas in our area. This consortium included SUNY Oneonta, Fox Hospital, Lutz Feed, Chenango Memorial Hospital and Chobani Yogurt, and Alvogen Pharmaceuticals and Bio-Kerry Life Science, both in Norwich.

These companies, during extreme cold weather, are asked to switch from NYSEG-supplied natural gas to alternative energy, i.e. oil, much costlier and some say more environmentally unacceptable. Estimates for assisting them raised the anticipated cost to $5 million.

When we discussed with NYSEG whether we could build a system to handle the interruptible supply group, the proposed expansion of the local company, and have enough gas to build out our two industrial parks – the estimate rose to $15 million.

The increase was not so much the cost of the decompressor station, but the cost of installing a new reinforced pipeline to handle the projected demand.

During this same time, we met with various groups including several environmental organizations. We did not hide or sugar coat what we were working on.

We explained what we saw as the problems and we explained the two options we saw to bring in additional natural gas: One, a de-compressor station at a site which would require minimum truck traffic off the Interstate (as opposed to having multiple companies

build their own de-compressor stations); two, to have NYSEG rebuild the pipeline from Norwich to Oneonta.

We did in fact collaborate with these groups on more than one occasion. To date, none of the environmental organizations have supported our proposed solutions, instead recommending conservation and the use of renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.

And while it is certainly worth pursuing for future projects as solar and wind energy would be a viable source for electric, it does not currently provide a solution to companies that need extreme heat in processing. Also, while many of the current solar projects provide income to residents to off-set the electric bills, they currently don’t increase our supply of energy.

Without building battery backup systems, the solar energy goes into the electric grid of NYSEG and doesn’t increase our own ability to have more energy.

With that said, we have consistently indicated that we would look at a balanced approach to our energy shortage. This includes natural gas, compressed gas and liquified gas, solar, wind power, geo-thermal and conservation. We have been and continue to seek input from those who can offer realistic solutions to our energy crisis – both in terms of natural gas as well as electric shortages.

I have personally met with two companies that can supply compressed gas, two companies that can supply liquified gas, one solar energy company on several occasions, and three companies that build wind farms. I have meetings being schedule with a Canadian company which uses trees to make oil and met with several individuals who recommend looking into geo-thermal.

I agree with those who say we are talking about a global crisis increasingly affecting us all. But by telling Otsego County it can’t have needed natural gas and electric to support the business community, we are only shifting economic growth to other communities In the absence of federal policy, companies throughout the nation will continue to grow using natural gas – just not here. The environment will be not better off. I also agree we need an energy task force now – to take immediate action.

Why wasn’t this done five years ago? In the absence

of doing nothing, Otsego Now is still committed to promoting economic growth and investment. If a task force is created, it must be created with real deadlines to accomplish real projects to solve this real crisis.

And Otsego Now, as I have said, is not the energy office of the county. This is just one project we are working on as the economic development organization of the county. This year we have worked to bring in TENTRR – with 40 new employees. We have finalized an agreement with Corning to invest some $11 million in the Oneonta facility to include system upgrades which will provide for better efficiency and reduce energy costs and keep some 175 people (families) here for the next fifteen years.

We have been working with Andela Products and Ruby Lakes Glass to build manufacturing facilities in Richfield Springs. We have applied for $750,000 to help Custom Electronics expand their operations in the Town of Oneonta and create 50 jobs. We have been trying to assist Steiner’s Meat Processing facility in Otego on their needed expansion.

We are studying how to improve the Oneonta Airport to become more financially stable and allow for additional airport improvements. We are assisting with the expansion of Wi-Fi capacity in Cooperstown and have been working to assist financially with Lutz Feeds rail-siding improvements project.

We need to address this problem now – not wait another five years as we have done in the past. As we do nothing, companies will leave our area. The company which planned to expand in our industrial park in 2020 is now looking at other counties. They will build their 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility, they will employ 300 people and they will use natural gas – just not in Oneonta.

And their existing 40 employees, 40 families, will likely move to their new location; another loss to our County. And this doesn’t account for the loss in new real estate taxes of the new manufacturing buildings to the town, county or school districts nor the loss in sales tax revenues to the County.

I welcome those who have solutions to the problem to work with us, but work with us quickly as the energy crisis in our county is here and now.

Sins Of Son Don’t Fall On Father To the Editor: Your newspapers’ Aug. 16-17 front-page headline pertaining to Ros Devlin’s alleged off-duty behavior was a disgusting form of journalism.

To cast aspersions by blatantly pointing the finger at incumbent Sheriff Devlin – insinuating that the behavior of his son should be reason to elect challenger Fernandez – is childish.

Should the sins of the son be cast upon the father?

This form of smear tactic speaks more to

the challenger’s character, not to mentoin the willingness of the publisher to print this.

I have been a supporter of your newspapers for years and do not intend to withdraw my support.

Are Citizens On Board With USS Cooperstown?

To the Editor: I read with interest the Aug. 16-17, 2018, article about Cooperstown Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh traveling to Wisconsin to witness the “keel-laying” of the U.S. warship that has been named after Cooperstown. The ship, built by one of the largest munitions manufacturers in the U.S., Lockheed Martin, increases an already bloated arsenal of machines of death, and further enriches a corporation that turns war into huge profits.

I couldn’t help but wonder if all of the citizens of Cooperstown are on board with this celebration of war. I know many locals who have been protesting every Wednesday at the Cooperstown Post Office for over 15 years, in regard

to the wars that our country wages all over the world. I doubt they would celebrate a warship being named after their hometown.

The mayor cited the “close relationship between the U.S. Navy and the Baseball HOF.” I wrote recently about the problematic aspects of this relationship, and how baseball has been used as a tool of propaganda by the U.S. military to garner support for questionable wars promoted by the CIA and other organizations shrouded in secrecy and darkness, wars that many experts say have caused an increase in the threat of terrorism to U.S. citizens, rather than a decrease.

These endless wars have brought death, destruction and mental health disasters

to the families of many of our veterans, and have resulted in countless incidents of “collateral damage” where innocent civilians in other countries, including mothers and children, have been slaughtered by weapons paid for with our tax dollars.

I think we should have a public meeting for our citizenry to have the opportunity to express to their representatives whether they want them to be showing support for the continuing U.S. violence against nations that are so remote from U.S. shores that their alleged threat to the United States is highly speculative at best.

That is what democracy is all about.

Rising To The Fly On Natural Gas ZAGATA/From A5 doesn’t totally replace the need for energy derived from fossil fuels – the sun doesn’t shine at night, so when the temperatures drop below zero during periods of darkness, the “grid” that supplies our energy relies on energy from fossil fuels like coal.

And what about those hazardous wastes in the solar panels that must be disposed at the end of their useful life?

• Why is it that it’s still OK to pull up to the gas tanks and fill our cars with gasoline, a non-renewable fossil fuel, that, when burned, yields some nasty air pollutants like NOX (Nitrous Oxides) and SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide) but it’s not OK to burn natural gas – and gasoline is delivered by trucks?

Even if you’re the most rabid anti-gas person, that can’t make sense to you.

Why is it still OK to heat our homes with fuel oil, a non-renewable fossil fuel that emits far more air pollutants than methane or natural gas, when burned? And, it’s delivered by trucks.

Why is it still OK to use propane to heat our homes or fuel our barbecue grills? It’s a non-renewable fossil fuel and, because it’s heavier than air and thus stays close to the ground when leaked, may lead to a potentially explosive situation. And, it’s delivered by trucks.

Shucks, why not just vote like the County Board and ban all trucks transporting any

kind of energy. It doesn’t take long to figure that one out now does it?

• The other issue that those against natural gas like to wave like a red flag in front of a bull is that of fugitive emissions – the natural gas that allegedly leaks from pipes, wells, etc.

If you were a company that produced (drilled for) or transported (pipeline) natural gas, would you knowingly allow it to leak?

The company that produces the gas and the company that transports that gas make their money by selling the gas to customers.

Does it make sense to you that they would knowingly allow gas to escape and thus not be available to be sold?

If you were a shareholder in a company that did that, would you be happy about it? If the paper allowed me more space, the story about the “studies” that claimed gas was leaking would be fascinating to debunk.

Searching For Fallen Pilot Forged Lifelong Ties Between Senator, Rees McCAIN/From A1 carrier, the USS Oriskany, where he flew bombing missions regularly over North Vietnam in an A-4 Skyhawk.

According to Rees, most of the pilots on the carriers focused solely on their own ships and didn’t pay much attention to the others.

“We didn’t know what the Kitty Hawk was doing or what the Oriskany was doing. We just knew what our missions were,” he said.

“From carrier to carrier, as a member of each ship, you were very involved in what was going on with each mission and your specific objectives.”

McCain was flying on a bombing run near the city of Hanoi when his A-4 Skyhawk was struck by a missile, forcing him to eject from the jet and land in a lake near Hanoi.

McCain was captured by North Vietnamese forces, and subsequently held prisoner of war for five and a half years before being released in March 1972.

During this time, he was sometimes tortured daily, withstanding severe physical and emotional abuse.

“He would certainly recognize me when I walked up to him,” said Rees. “I liked him because of our shared experiences in Vietnam. One of the things he always said was ‘the best friends and closest connections you’ll ever have in life are with the people that you fly with,’ and I agree with that.”

But one of Rees’ biggest takeaways from his relationship with McCain was his appreciation for life.

“You always heard him talk about how fortunate he was and how he never regretted anything. I feel the same way.”

ave Reese isn’t the only local person who met and liked Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican claimed by brain cancer Saturday, Aug. 25.

In 2008, former assemblyman Tony Casale of Cooperstown worked on the McCain campaign

and was a McCain delegate at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.

“I got to know Senator McCain a little bit during that campaign,” said Casale. “He was tough as nails, and he wouldn’t waiver on his principles. Whether you agreed or disagreed with him, you knew that he always had the best interests of the country in mind, and was always a true patriot.”

Casale was even invited to the

senator’s funeral in Annapolis, Md., but will be unable to attend.

Another Cooperstown connection with McCain was more happenstance.

CCS grad Scott Waller, son of former Mayor Carol Waller and her husband, Bill, ran into the senator at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport a month after he was defeated for president by Barack Obama in 2008.

“Scott was returning to Wash-

ington, D.C. from a seminar when his flight was delayed,” said his father Bill. “While he was sitting at the gate, Senator McCain came up to him and spoke to him.”

He took interest in Scott’s Gonzaga College High School sweatshirt, the school where Scott taught and coached. The two had a lengthy conversation, and discovered that a friend McCain served with in Vietnam was one of Scott’s neighbors in D.C.

“He said on his next visit he would stop by and say hello to Scott’s family,” said Waller. “A month later, the Senator knocked on Scott’s door just to say hello.

It’s still is a nice story about a great man.”

On the same flight, McCain sat in front of Scott in coach. A stewardess come up and said, “We have a seat for you in first class.”

McCain replied, “I’m OK where I am.”

“I think everyone is happy with the outcome,” said Trustee James Dean. “I know that I’m happy, and I think the residents on the street are happy as well.”

At Monday’s meeting, all the trustees appeared to

agree on returning to parallel parking and the handicapped spots. However, Streets Committee Chair Cindy Falk and Trustee Jeanne Dewey disagreed to reducing the time limit from all day to three hours.

Falk said a new sidewalk, completed last week by an Oneonta Jobs Corps crew, didn’t include a grassy strip between the concrete and

Neighbors at the meeting agreed with the prospective retreat.

“I think it’s a very reasonable compromise,” said Tony Casale. “I think the proposal presented provides for safer parking; it provides for protection of viewshed; it provides for adequate accommodations for those looking to visit the park in the summer time; and most importantly, it creates much needed handicap parking.”

While trustees agreed that parallel parking was the most sensible solution,

they didn’t on the three-hour parking limit.

Falk would usually make the motion on the resolution, but she didn’t, saying she disagrees on the threehour limit. “One of the things that I always hate to see is when we have parking spaces available, and no one is taking advantage of them,” said Falk.

At lunch the other day, she walked down to Fish Road, on the other side of Lakefront Park, and saw six spots vacant there.

That’s also why Dewey joined Falk in voting no on the resolution.

OBITUARIES T. Gunter Smith, 80; Brokerage Executive Retired To Cooperstown COOPERSTOWN – T. Gunter Smith, 80, of Mobile, Ala., and Cooperstown, a native of Atlanta, Ga., born Jan. 31, 1938, passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2018, in Cooperstown, surrounded by his loving family.

Smith’s primary business career was as senior vice president of The RobinsonHumphrey Company, a regional financial brokerage firm, where he managed the Mobile office for 25 years

before his retirement in 2002.

Known as Gunter, he graduated from Webb Preparatory School in T. Gunter Bell Buckle, Smith Tenn., and received his Bachelor of Science from Georgia Tech in 1963, where he was a member of the SAE

After college, Smith served three years as an officer aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Northampton.

He moved to Mobile, Ala., in 1963 following his naval service.

Smith was an avid pilot and aviation enthusiast, and his yellow Navy biplane was a familiar sight around the Mobile Bay area for almost 20 years. He was a member of several aviation

organizations, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the National Biplane Association and the Piper Cub Club.

For the past 20 years, Smith split his time between Mobile and Cary Mede family farm in upstate New York near Cooperstown.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bradley Goodyear Smith; daughters, Jeanette Goodyear Weldon

and Susanne Smith McAvoy; and five grandchildren, William James Weldon IV, Bradley Goodyear Weldon, K. Gunter Weldon, Christian Gallagher McAvoy and John Goodyear McAvoy.

The family will be receiving those that wish to pay their respects from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 2, at Cary Mede in Springfield Center.

Immediately following, there will be remarks and a

Celebration of Life.

Homer R. Casler, 91; Mason Was Active In Fire Department WEST WINFIELD - Homer R. Casler, 91, a Mason and a dairy farmer passed away peacefully in the care of the Masonic Care Community in Utica on Aug. 25, 2018.

He was born July 22, 1927, in Litchfield, a son of the late Charles B. Casler and Nellie Donahoe Casler.

He was educated in the Days Corners Schoolhouse in Litchfield, and then West Winfield Central School; he graduated in 1945. He married Margaret (Peggy Jones) Casler in 1954.

After growing up on a dairy farm, he worked on farms in Homer, Litchfield, and West Winfield, before purchasing the dairy farm in West Exeter, where they raised their family. He successfully operated this farm as a family business until his retirement.

Through the years, he enjoyed several opportunities to travel to visit family and see sights across the country.

Homer was active in many organizations, including dairy clubs including the OHM Holstein club, as well as the National and New York State Holstein Associations. He was a Dairylea member from 1955 to 1983.

He was a 45 plus year member of the Farmer’s Masonic Lodge in Edmeston, a member of the board of directors of the Sauquoit Valley Insurance Company.

He was a charter member of the West Exeter Fire Department, and served as a Fire Commissioner.

He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, enjoying many years of hunting and advocating for conservation through involvement with the N.Y.S. Fish and Wildlife Board, and had been a member of the Burlington Flats Fish and Game Club since 1970.

He is survived by his brothers, Robert (Mike) of Nelliston, and Earl (Dick) of Homer Frankfort; Casler his children, Joan and Robert Trevor of Ilion, David and Lisa Casler of New Hartford, Nancy Casler and friend Jim Cummins of Menands, Barbara and Robert Bachman of Sherburne; grandchildren, Carrie, Amy, Jake Trevor, Kate and Adam Casler,

Evan Bowman and Ben Casler, and Lizzy and Molly Bachman, as well as twelve great-grandchildren.

Nothing made him happier than time spent with his family, especially the children.

He also leaves his inlaw’s, James Waner, Patricia Casler and Donald Lorraine.

Homer was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 50 years in 2009; and also by his sisters, Ruth Paddock and Doris Wagner; and brothers, Fredrick, James, Stanley, and George.

Family and friends are

invited to call from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 1.

The Farmers Masonic Lodge No. 553 will have a ritualistic service at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

His funeral services will be held following calling hours at noon at the Dimbleby Funeral Homes Inc., 365 West Main St., West Winfield, with Pastor Ken McKenzie of the Federated Church officiating.

Interment will be in West Exeter Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Dimbleby Funeral Home.

Sweet Cider Pressing Starting For Season

ome traditions never get old.

“Making cider is a family thing,” said Dale Dyn, who owns Dyn’s Cider Mill, Town of Richfield. “We do custom pressings, so people can pick their apples and bring them here.

We wash, grind, press, pasteurize and bottle, whether you bring your own bottle or buy ours.”

The mill dates to 1929, when her husband Ken’s grandfather, John, opened the mill inside a former cheese factory to press cider for the locals who brought

in apples from their backyard orchards. “Back then, people would bring barrels to load up on hard cider,” she said. “We may have made cider during Prohibition!”

John’s son Walt took it over.

He died in 1974, and Dale and Ken have run it ever since. The husband handles the press – the apples come from orchards in Lafayette – and the wife runs the store and bakes more than a dozen treats, from pies to pastries to homemade fudge. On Wednesdays, Dyn’s offers a spaghetti dinner, and on Sundays a breakfast menu.

Peek around any corner of The Wood Bull, and these such curiosities – and thousands more – are waiting.

“I like stuff that tells a story,” said proprietor Kip Coburn. “They don’t have to be complete and functional.

I just want something that has life to it.”

Part antique store, part museum, the Wood Bull has been a part of the Route 28 landscape since 1980.

specialized in inflatable sculptures, had a gallery in SoHo, and would sell things he found at auctions. “I was fascinated with them,” he said. “We didn’t have that in the city. You could come up here and fill up a car for $20.”

His wife, Judith, was a

teacher, and on weekends would sell their auction finds in a booth on Canal Street. But she was looking to get out of teaching, and they both loved Upstate New York so much they decided to move here permanently.

When they bought the

barn, there were no doors and the roof had holes. “We were selling stuff out of boxes,” he said. “I’d work on the roof and then go to auctions and yard sales.”

Back then, he said, a lot of farms were going out of business, so he would buy tools and broken farm

equipment. “I really like the industrial – gears and wheels,” he said. “It wasn’t popular for awhile, but now people want it again.”

The butcher would have a lamb or a pig hanging in there, and go from door to door selling chops.”

But it doesn’t have to be antique, just interesting.

“There’s a lot of reproductions of the Buddha or Victorian urns,” he said.

“I gravitate towards those, even if they’re not old.”

Even with four floors, eventually, there wasn’t enough space for everything, and now there are treasures to be found on the lawn. “I added paths and ponds,” he said. “The land, to me, is like a big block of wood and I’m chiseling it out. There’s a big difference if something is here or there.

It’s like mixing colors on a great big palette.”

In addition to his shop, he also welcomes the annual Cooperstown Antique Festival in the field next to the barn. “The antique show was about to dissolve because they couldn’t find anywhere to have it,” he said. “I offered to let them use the field.” (Wood Bull also hosts the annual Susquehanna Valley Garlic Fest, coming up 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22.)

People are drawn to antiques, Coburn said, because you’re all but guaranteed that no one else will have anything like it. “I had an old drafting table and someone bought it to use as a dining room table,” he said.

“It was very interesting, not just something you would go into a Pottery Barn and find.”

hile the seasons change, one thing always changes with them: Beer.

“In the summertime, people tend to drink lighter beers because it’s hot out and they’re thirstier,” said David Olson, owner of Red Shed Brewery on Route 33 south of Cooperstown. “But there is a tendency to lean more into darker beers as the weather begins to turn.”

Brown porters and darker brews tend to be “comfier” in colder weather, he said.

Opening last November, the Red Shed Brewery is Otsego County’s newest brewery, (although it continues to operate a tasting room opened in 2015.)

Now, Olson is preparing his brewery’s first autumn beer: Pumpkin spice amber lager. “The lagering process takes months so we’ve already started making it,” he said.

Red Shed Brewery is planning to release its Oktoberfest beer at its own celebration, a little early: Sept.

21-23. It will also feature German food and music.

Most County Breweries Plan Fall Beers BEERS/From Pg. 9 Phil Leinhart, brewmaster at Brewery Ommegang, a couple of hundred yards south of the Red Shed, said the term “fall beer” is a bit more ambiguous than beer fans may think.

“There really is no official definition as to what exactly a ‘fall beer’ is,” he said. “It really comes down to whatever you want to market

each beer as.”

But what makes slightly darker beers more popular in the fall? It may go back to beer’s German roots, Leinhart said.

“Historically, it all generates around Oktoberfest and all of the different beers that breweries in Munich produce leading up to the festival,” he said.

Oktoberfest, the Bavarian

harvest celebration, has been celebrated in Munich for over 200 years, and brings 6 million visitors to Munich annually over 16 days to guzzle down 7.7 million liters of beer.

Oktoberfest’s main beer is an amber lager style brew, which is produced around the world in coordination with the event.

Company in Milford, Manager Lauren Ward said it’s releasing a brand-new bear, Mr. Oktoberfest. “It’s a marzen style beer, brewed with Munich and Vienna malts,” she said. “It will have a copper color and a slight sweetness to it.”

Roots Brewing Co. in Oneonta is also planning its first autumn beer. “I’m working on a fall Belgian dubbel,” a dark malty beer with caramel notes, said brewmaster Jason Parrish.

“It’s exciting. It’s a new beer for us. We’ve never done

this one before.”

At Butternuts Beer & Ale in Garrattsville, owner Chuck Williamson is creating an autumn pumpkin brew.

The recipe includes 10 pounds of pumpkin for every 30 gallons, he said, and the brewery is filled with locally sourced gourds from a Middlefield patch.

“People love the pumpkin saison,” Williamson said.

“I’ve had people that don’t drink beer that come up to me and say that they can’t wait for it to come back.”

Here are venues foliage trails.

• Wilbur and Betty Davis State Park, Worcester, with view south and west, and hardwood forests.

• Glimmerglass State Park, including the Sleeping Lion trail, 2½ miles with views of Otsego Lake.

• Brookwood Point, 22 acres of diverse ecosystem, including meadow and forest, seasoned and young trees, wetlands and shorefront, and historic cultivated gardens.

• Gilbert Lake State Park’s trail trail loops the lake. Also available are non-motorized boat rentals, picnic areas, camping and a bandstand.

Starting Sept. 29, the society’s fall foliage train will leave Milford Depot at 1 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday from Sept. 29 through Columbus Day, (when the train departs at 11 a.m.), for 2½ hours of leaf peeping, crossing the Susquehanna River twice and passing through farms and forests. For reservations, call (607) 432-2429.

For those who prefer to see foliage from the water, Canoe & Kayak Rentals & Sales in Portlandville has boat launches on Goodyear and Otsego lakes, the latter at Brookwood Point.

Rent kayaks, canoes and stand-up by the hour, halfday, full day and weekly.

The Portlandville store and dock are open through Columbus Day, weather permitting.

Or you can ride on horseback through the colors, with Brass Ring Farm, 4015 Route 28, Milford, renting horses to riders 10 and older. A preliminary lesson is given before each trail ride. For details, call (607) 286-9333.
