He is an ordained rabbi and cantor who has served egalitarian conservative synagogues for over 15 years as a rabbi and 30

years as a cantor. He most recently served as both at Howard Beach Judea Center in Queens and Rabbi Bay Ridge Hirschfeld Jewish Center in Brooklyn, where he taught

adult education, prepared bat/bar mitzvah students, and fulfilled all typical duties of a congregational rabbi. Rabbi Hirschfeld is passionate about Jewish and secular scholarship and enjoys sharing Jewish values and wisdom with congregants.

Though he currently lives in Brooklyn, he is planning to move Upstate.

As a young man, Mr. Hall graduated valedictorian Stan Hall of the class of 1951 from Milford Central School in Milford, New York and earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University in 1955. He completed Army Reserve Officer’s Training and received his commission as a Second Lieutenant.

Mr. Hall completed his master’s degree in education there in 1968. He continued his night school studies and earned a Master of Science degree from Clarkson University in 1970.

During the next 18 years, Mr. Hall served as VP for development at Hiram College, Purdue University, Hartwick College and Colgate University.

Mr. Hall was featured in the 11th and 12th editions of “Who’s Who in the World”, the 24th and 25th editions of Who’s Who in the East, the 27th and 28th editions of “Who’s Who in Finance and Industry”, and the 50th edition of “Who’s Who in America”.

Wife’s ‘Multicultured Life’ Joins Husband’s ‘Privilege & Prejudice’ office. No problem was too small not to appeal to MSU’s charismatic first lady: A mother called: “My daughter hasn’t written in a month.”

Three, moving to Albany, she and her husband decided to create a duplex in the South Tower of the former D&H station – now SUNY headquarters – into the president’s official residence, with a view of the Hudson River on one side and Rockefeller’s Empire State Plaza on another. It was a move that won both praise and criticism.

Again, her outreach, including expanding the luncheons for 67 college presidents’ wives to include their husbands, guests and top speakers during the annual conference at The Otesaga, helped smooth internal relations.

There are dozens of such anecdotes in the book.

Retirement in Cooperstown – summering in Cooperstown, wintering at United Nations Plaza in New York City – yields a chapter of particular local interest, with mentions ranging from Jane Forbes Clark to Melissa Manikas, now owner of Cooperstown’s State Farm agency, who helped Dolores’ husband with his research, her hairdresser Kim Potts, and many others.

“As newcomers to the community, we delighted in exploring Cooperstown,” she writes. “…We found classic colonial architecture still conspicuous, with slender white church steeples that peek above rows of wood-framed

houses … with broad porches and closely trimmed lawns.”

She served on the Glimmerglass Opera board, convincing Phillips Petroleum to underwrite an NPR broadcast of Mozart’s “Il Re Pastore.” He served on Bassett, NYSHA and the Clark Foundation boards.

She is 92, he is shortly

turning 93, they offered during the interview – Team Wharton’s been in place for 67 years.

That love match has inspired many, said Lee Brathwaite.

“On the professional level, they are examples I have always attempted to live up to,” he continued. “On a personal level, they’ve been successful in their marriage. My wife and I strive

to emulate their example. We love them dearly.”

He ended with a remark that – having read both her “Multiculture” and his “Privilege” – might be echoed by hundreds of associates from KL to East Lansing to Albany to Washington to Cooperstown.

“I can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done for me.”

T

he quote, at right, is Dolores Wharton’s earliest memory, recounted in “A Multicultured Life,” an engaging, irresistible memoir of not quite a century of American life, as she – in tandem with husband Clifton R. In her new memoir, “A Multicultural Life,” she describes Phillips Petroleum directors’ 1990 camaraderie-building trip to a North Sea oil rig, which helped “the old guard (adjust) to us interlopers.”

sense of camaraderie evolved during a field trip undertaken by the entire (Phillips Petroleum) board and company officers to Ekofisk, the gigantic oil drilling platform 20 miles off the coast of Norway. That trip – the full board’s first-ever excursion to the platform – was at my request and to fulfill my desire to experience an actual drilling platform located in the North Sea. Discovered in 1969, Ekofisk oil field was so huge that, at its peak, its oil and gas output amounted to more than a third of Phillips’ total energy production. Our party, arriving from

droned for two hours brought us over the vast North Sea. We had left the coast of Norway 200 miles behind, with no land in sight and only a thin, flat line where gray sky met gray-green water. Below us, the sea churned and wind gusts whipped up waves flecked with foam.

’m at a loss to find a good simile for my Cooperstown newspaper career. It’s been a bit like a ping-pong game, but played like a flow of molasses. OK, forget figures of speech: Way back in the early ’90s, when I first moved north from Maryland, the redoubtable Lidie Mackie retired from her weekly Freeman’s Journal column about Fly Creek. She urged me to take on the job.

I had no hope of matching Lidie’s style. It was clear, factual, but sometimes carried a sly irony. For example: “Adolina Berger is just back from a week in Virginia, where her sister is losing ground to tuberculosis.” Then,

in the very next sentence, “Addy has not been looking well herself.”

As I say, I could never match that well-honed subtlety! Of course people love to see their name in print, JIM but I imagine they ATWELL tried to keep on the right side of Lidie, too.

Anyway, I found myself writing for The Freeman’s Journal, a newspaper with a proud history that extended into the early 19th century. But I wasn’t

Welch Indians – It seems that a Society in the State of New York has sent out persons to ascend the Missouri in search of Welch Indians. A Mr. Stoddart collected some years ago and embodied in his sketches of Louisiana, many loose reports and disjointed rumors on this subject. He seemed to give credit to the belief of their existence. Since his time, however, the country supposed to be the place of their residence, and in fact every part of the country in which they could reside, has been explored. There is no exception from the confines of Mexico to the Arctic Circle.

The “Cuban Giants” always draw well, when playing against the Cooperstown Athletics. Monday last was no exception to the rule. There was a large audience to witness the game. With one man for two days previous on the sick list, and a substitute playing for another, it did not look promising for the home team – but the manner in which they opened the game gave their friends confidence. On the second inning it was a tie. Then the Athletics surged six ahead, after which the Giants closed up the gap steadily, leaving the Athletics the victors at the end by two runs, 16 to 14. It was an exciting game – some fine playing – though marked with a number of errors on both sides. (Ed. Note: Baseball in the early 1890s was played without the aid of gloves for fielding and errors were more common as a result) August 16, 1894

Leonard and Delmar Hutchings, the former 13 years old, and the latter 15 years old, were sentenced yesterday to a term in the Rochester Industrial School by Justice of the Peace Vanderwerker after they had been accused and admitted breaking into the home of Mrs. Stone Benedict on Main and River streets, and robbing the house of various petty articles. The conviction is part of the program of District Attorney Adrian A. Pierson to break up a number of so-called “boy gangs” about the village who have been committing various depredations from time to time.

• The point is, we rely on farmers to grow the foods we eat and they rely on fossil fuels (gasoline and diesel) to run their farm equipment; to produce the fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides they use to maximize production; and to dry their corn once it is harvested.

Following the daily collection of the eggs, butchering of the hogs or mechanical harvesting of the tomatoes (takes more fossil fuel to haul the mechanical pickers), they are processed, stored and then transported by truck to distribution centers where they are then trucked to the stores where you purchase them.

All of that happens without you being aware of it – but it nonetheless happens.

If you ban the use of fossil fuels, those processes won’t happen nearly as efficiently

as they do now. That means you will either be forced to

Vittoria “Vicci” Demarest, 90, Cooperstown, an early and ardent supporter of the Glimmerglass Opera, died Friday after a brief illness. Ms. Demarest was a graduate of the Knox School in Cooperstown. She attended Skidmore College for two years and graduated from the Traphagen School of Design in New York City. Ms. Demarest was the daughter of the well-known sculptor, Victor Salvatore, and the former Ellen Ryerson, whose father, Arthur Ryerson, died in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. After a marriage to the late William Demarest, she lived in Guilford, Connecticut for many years. In 1973 she returned to Cooperstown and served on the board of the Glimmerglass Opera and other local organizations.

Let’s Protect The Protectors

o you really want to stop using fossil fuels? Your immediate answer may be a resounding “yes.”

However, that could change your life in a way you hadn’t anticipated.

That’s because so many of us grew up in cities and have no real tie to the land or to how the things we rely upon in our daily MIKE lives come from or ZAGATA how they are made.

Do eggs, tomatoes and bacon come from the grocery store? That may be where you purchase them, but that’s not where they originate. They are grown on farms, often located thousands of miles from the store where you purchased them. When you purchase a tomato during the winter, it likely was grown in California. The eggs you buy likely were hatched by chickens residing in huge poultry farms in the South that were fed with grains from the Midwest. The

If so, it was made using natural gas – a fossil fuel.

Are you aware that many of the parts, including bumpers and body panels, in your car are made with a form of plastic? You guessed it - plastics are made with fossil fuels.

What about the steel used in your car? It was manufactured using natural gas or coal in the smelting process.

What about the tires on your car? You guessed it – each of them contains about two gallons of petroleum.

The legislation was inspired by the many brave men and women in uniform who have lost their lives, were injured or targeted simply because of their jobs as protectors of the community. The legislation would classify all crimes against first responders, such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel as hate crimes. These offenses are designated as hate crimes only if they are intentionally aimed at first responders based on the profile of their career.

In current law, when a person is convicted of a hate crime and the specified offense is a misdemeanor or a class C, D or E felony, the hate crime shall be deemed to be one category higher than the specified offense or one category higher than the offense level applicable to the defendant`s conviction. Police officers and first responders are not included in the current definition of a hate crime.

Professionals and volunteers who wear a uniform and serve the public have earned our utmost respect and are true lifesavers. The recent surge in attacks on

our first responders is sad and disturbing. It is imperative that we stand shoulder to shoulder with these brave men and women and provide any safeguards possible.

Unfortunately, the Assembly never voted on the bill in either 2017 or 2018.

This year, with Democrats in charge of the Senate, the bill was not even allowed out of committee for Senate consideration.

As I have said previously, the Albany pendulum has swung toward criminals and away from crime victims and law enforcement. Along with blocking the “Community Heroes Protection Act”, the Democrats in charge in Albany also prevented several other bills, known as the “Victims’ Justice Agenda” from reaching the Senate floor for a vote. The comprehensive legislative package would reform the parole system to keep violent criminals behind bars without parole and ease the parole process for suffering victims, families and the public.

Moving forward I will continue to stand up for crime victims along with those who enforce our laws and keep our communities safe and secure.

The Wharton Team’s Counter Narrative Gives Hope In Contentious Era

• While in Kuala Lumpur in the 1960s, she discovered the fledgling field of modern Malaysian art (and introduced artists there to New York City’s avant garde). At Michigan State in the 1970s, she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her husband before howling crowds of Vietnam protesters, but also expanded his office’s influence through her warm courtesy and considerateness.

In the 1980s and ’90s, she served as the first woman and first black woman on boards of directors of some of our most venerable corporations – from oil to utilities to Gannett during the creation of USA Today.

And – the source of her most satisfaction today – was using those contacts to create The Fund for Corporate Initiatives, preparing promising minority and women executives for top jobs “through intellectual and provocative interaction with stimulating professionals, instilling notable self-

confidence as they moved up the corporate ladder.”

She retired FCI at the turn of the century, recognizing that by then many, many individual companies had embraced and adopted its visionary model.

• Through all this, yes, the Whartons encountered prejudice.

Most memorable, perhaps, was in “Privilege & Prejudice,” where young Clifton, raised overseas, had never encountered segregation. Until, that is, back home to attend Boston

Latin, he and an aunt, on a visit to relatives in Virginia, were ordered into a blackonly car when the train crossed the Mason-Dixon line.

As Dolores grew up in Danbury, Conn., the snubs were more subtle but hurtful nonetheless.

In both books, though, the Whartons mention but don’t dwell on these.

Experiencing life at the top, making friends and getting things done predominate.

The small-minded pettiness they encounter shrinks in the face of accomplishment.

While immersed in the reading of “A Multicultured Life,” Joe Biden uttered his latest gaffe, “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids,” equating race and poverty.

Of course, the Whartons’ books present a dramatic counter-narrative, his and now hers: from her first memory of black prosperity, to a chance introduction to her husband in the Harvard Yard, to their wedding, hosted by Marian Anderson in her Connecticut studio, and to all that followed.

The lives they lived, the

heights they reached, the good they achieved, are examples for all Americans – whites certainly, but blacks more urgently.

“It’s not to say there’s not a problem,” said the former SUNY chancellor. “But that” – poverty, and its grinding cruelty – “is not the only experience of the blacks.”

In an accusatory era rife with bitter argumentation – about race and much more – let’s keep believing, locally and nationally: The American Dream, while not a guarantee, can live. The Whartons’ triumphant lives prove it.

Idelson’s ‘Grassroots’ Inspires Other Ways To Win Youngsters To the Editor (and baseball fans everywhere): Kudos to former Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson for co-founding Grassroots Baseball, an effort to connect young kids to what at one time was our National Pastime. When my generation was growing up, we would race home after school to catch the World Series at about the third inning, creating fond, lifelong memories.

My kids didn’t have that opportunity. For too long, all MLB playoff and World Series games start past Little Leaguer bedtimes. As usual in our country, the almighty dollar runs the show.

On another note, I read the other day of MLB’s plans to have the White Sox and the Yankees play A REGULAR SEASON GAME at the corn field in Iowa where “Field of Dreams” was filmed. I hope it’s a day game.

The Yankees and Red Sox played TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES in London earlier this year and there are plans for games in Williamsport, Pa., and Omaha, Neb. I think it’s wonderful that MLB is taking the initiative to reconnect people to baseball.

Once upon a time for more than 50 years, two Major League teams played AN EXHIBITION GAME every year on Doubleday Field to celebrate the induction of baseball’s greatest players into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Before he implies that they are immigrants by failing to correct the president’s comments, and Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez’ family has been American since 1898 at least one generation and probably two before the Trumps, he should be aware that Donald Trump has claimed that his father was an immigrant. (By the way, he wasn’t, but the president’s grandfather was.) He then takes the liberty of loosely translating the president’s words. He is very loose with his “translation.”

I myself have a great deal of problems with “The Squad” and have found myself opposed to almost all their proposals but the president having similar problems does not give him the right to deprecate our wonderful country.

but wonder how any normal human beings had the courage and desire to pursue such dangerous work.

ZAGATA: Oil Gives Comforts We Depend On

The likely answer is “yes”, and fossil fuels are used in their manufacture.

There are about 6,000 products we use in our daily lives that are petroleumbased. On average, every day each of us uses about three and one-half gallons of oil and 250 cubic feet of natural gas.

Some of the other petroleum-based products we use include: dentures and denture adhesive, lipstick, toothpaste and toothbrushes, artificial limbs, shampoo, soft contact lenses, paint, cell phones, televisions, CD and DVD players and discs, eye glasses, detergents, cameras, solar panels and their internals, tennis

rackets, credit cards, waxes, asphalt, chewing gum, vitamin capsules, roofing shingles and paper, skis, heart valves, refrigerators, antihistamines, golf balls, rugs made with synthetic fibers, panty hose, insect repellents, fishing rods and shaving cream.

• As you can see from the discussion above, the things we rely upon in our daily lives originate with some variation of a fossil fuel. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be working towards finding substitutes that will allow us to maintain our quality of life AND improve the quality of our environment. We should be doing that on a regular basis.

However, we also need to be intellectually honest with regards to what those realistic solutions are. We can’t afford to chart a course that will take us away from what we know works without assurance that the “substitute” (renewable energy sources) will work as promised.

I bring this up because we are now starting to get valid data from solar and wind farms that are actually operational.

We know the wind farms along Route 20 in Madison County have been non-operational for about a year while waiting for parts.

We know the solar farm in Broome County that promised to deliver between 4 and 5.2 megawatts (enough to

power 3,200 to 4,000 homes) is actually producing 6.1 million kilowatts (about onetenth of what was promised), or about enough to power 567 homes.

In other words, reality was about one-seventh of what was promised and thus the cost of that power went up dramatically.

If those numbers hold true across the State, we’re in for a significant energy shortage if the Governor’s energy plan is fully implemented.

As I’ve said before, please don’t drink the Kool-Aid until you know what’s in it.

Which he did, and then fled the area, leaving behind dark clouds of unpaid bills and ill will.

But, thank goodness, The Freeman’s Journal soon came into ethical and professional hands and was restored to life. In the meantime, however, my journalistic career seemed over.

(To use that ping-pong figure, I’d served low and over the net – only to have the ball burned back at me, past any chance of recovery.)

• But no! Not the last breath! (Hard to kill a entity that’s been deepening its roots since 1808.) The Freeman’s Journal arose, renewed itself, and carries on, even unto today. Huzzah!

And I’m delighted to be back with it, to visit with you every two weeks. And what are we going to talk about?

Well, if you’ve followed my columns at all across the last quarter-century, you know that mine’s a meandering mind. It finds interest and often delight in almost

anything. That’s surely not going to change, not at 81.

My imagined perspective will be, not from Fly Creek, but from Anne’s and my front porch at 24 Delaware St. As I’ve told you, I love to sit out there, especially in in late afternoons, greeting school kids heading home and people out being walked by their dogs.

The Journal’s editor is often among them (he lives just down the street), and so is our mayor, whose home is just around the corner.

And so is Tony Scalici, who’s served this village in so many ways, especially on the school board. Tony’s eyes are failing badly, but not his inner vision. At my urging he’s shared with me some of his writing – and it’s splendid. Not only is he a vivid storyteller, but Tony has a rare gift: he intuits how sound and meaning can be fit together to rise, in his writing, to the truly poetic.

And he’s shared the work with me, mind you, right on my front porch! I hope he’ll let me quote some of it to you?

• Well, as you see, as long as I have the porch as vantage point, I won’t lack things to pass on. Including, of course, the comments on the hundreds that pass the house on the way to Induction Ceremony. They’re mostly family groups, laughing and happy, hauling backpacks and coolers and folding chairs. Kids dance and chant, “Almost there? Almost there?”

And at our house, I can shout back, “You bet! Hang on!” (Well, they still have a bit more than half a mile, but why say that?)

The mood of that same crowd a few hours later is very different. They look battered, beaten as the Little Corporal’s troops retreating from Moscow. Kids are sullen, parents snappish, and very few are now hauling chairs.

What, wonders the old dude on the porch, happens to all those abandoned chairs?

To the Editor, I have a problem with Mike Zagata’s latest opinion piece.

In it he quotes Donald Trump’s tweet, “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democratic congresswomen who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken crime infested places from which they came? Then come back and show us how it is done.”

Well, I have a real problem with the president disparaging the United States. Three out of the four members of “The Squad” were born in the United States.

In spite of the current national dichotomy I think it is despicable for the president to declare our country “totally broken” and “crime infested” but I assume Mr. Zagata has

recruited from all around the world and carefully trained, had one essential trait in common: the toughness to withstand those oft-times brutal conditions.

A calm sea during our visit allowed a few off-duty workers to sit on the edge of the platform, as relaxed as tourists fishing in the Florida Keys.

The principal reason for the trip was to see repairs to the platform’s weakening sea floor.

Toward the end of 1984, Phillips had discovered that the seabed beneath Ekofisk was settling, apparently due to the tremendous extraction of oil and gas.

Consequently, the platforms had dropped closer to sea level than when first built.

To restore the margin of safety between the decks and the water, Phillips had devised a method for raising the platform by using giant floating and semi-submers-

Recycling electronic waste keeps toxic chemicals contained in computers, including lead, mercury and cadmium, from leaking into soil and groundwater.

“We live in a disposable society,” said Hurlburt. “It’s cheaper to buy a new printer than to fix one. It used to be you could give the computer to your little brother or the church, but they’re outdated by the time you finish with them.”

Computer towers, laptops and printers can all be recycled, free of charge, through ISD. Monitors can be recycled for a small fee.

“We had an older man come in with what I’m pretty sure was his first computer!” she said. “We get some really ancient stuff.”

On the most recent haul, the bins provided by EWaste+ were filled to capacity. “We had stuff on the floor,” she said. “They couldn’t even take it all.”

And ISD’s commitment to computer security doesn’t end when the computer no longer works. “We destroy the hard drives before we recycle them,” she said.

“We want to prevent anyone’s information from getting out there.”

Some of that destruction involves technology, sometimes good old-fashioned strength. “Sometimes, the techs will come out and smash it with a hammer,” she said.

ISD also partners with Opportunities for Otsego to become a drop-off point for cell-phone recycling.

Hurlburt herself proposed ISD for the Chamber award.

“I saw the guidelines and I thought, ‘This is exactly what we do!’ We want to get it out there in the community that we offer this service – and it’s free.”

In addition to the recycling, ISD is active promoting local not-forprofits in the community, organizations like Family Service Association and the Oneonta YMCA. “We pick a Website of the Month and do a display in the kiosk at the Southside Mall,” she said. “It helps everybody.”

Hurlburt has also been president of the Foothills board, and serves on the Hospice boards. “It’s always been important for us to give back,” she said.

Drop-offs can be done any time during open hours, but Hurlburt advised that anyone with a large load to recycle call ahead first, (607) 432-7090.

“We pride ourselves on our customer service,” she said. “When you deal locally, you have to. It’s our name, they’re our customers and we take care of them.”

“That was the place to take my children to from when they were young,” Moyer said. “They always had classes and programs my children could be in. It was always a family place.”

Back in the 1940s, when Moyer, her husband Ward, and her five children first joined, it was called the Alfred Corning Clark Gymnasium and was located downtown in what today is the Hall of Fame administration building.

“We went to the bowling alleys,” she said. “My son Jim, he was age 7 or 8, would set up the bowling pins for his father after he knocked them down. There were no machines to do that back then.”

The Moyer children went to ACC after school every day, playing in the competitive basketball leagues and taking swimming lessons.

After all Moyer’s kids were in school, she began taking swimming classes, which turned into a lifelong healthy habit.

“That was the place where everyone went to, where everything happened,” she said. “I remember going to the Christmas dance every year and having a wonderful time.”

Moyer also admires the Clark’s customer service.

For instance, when the pool was closed for a year during the 2016-17 renovation and expansion, Moyer

told Director Val Paige she worried about not swimming, because “swimming keeps me alive.”

Paige fixed the problem: “We made arrangements with Fox Care in Oneonta for our members to use their pool … “We paid their fees, and people could keep working out during construction.”

The center also gives free membership to pupils eligible for free or reduced lunches, and helps low-tomoderate income families pay for memberships.

“Anyone who wants to become a member can become one,” Paige said.”

That approach is why Paige – a 42-year employee – and other staff members stay there so long.

For instance, Assistant Athletics Director Scott Whiteman. He grew up in Cherry Valley and has worked at the center for almost 20 years; he was in Paige’s swim classes from age 7 to 11.

“I was raised at Clark

Sports Center,” he said. “It was the only place that had basketball in the area. Kids from everywhere came to the sports center. Some of my best friends today are ones who came in from other towns.”

In summers, “we take our equipment and instructors out to places, such as Cherry Valley, Edmeston, Unatego and Worcester, and hold weeklong camps for the kids,” he said. “In Worcester, our basketball camp is $40 for a week, but the Booster Club there pays $20 of it, so the families only pay $20 for it.”

Whiteman, Paige and other staff all used the same word in describing the Clark Sports Center – “luckiest.”

“Anyone out of town who happens to visit the Center says, ‘You all are the luckiest people in the world to have this place,’” said Whiteman. “And I’m the luckiest person to be able to work here, teaching kids and seeing people throughout the years.”

Joan E. Fluke, 80; In Later Years, Coloradan Traveled Extensively

HARTWICK – Joan (Joanie) Elizabeth (Thompson) Fluke, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, in her home in Hartwick, where she lived with her daughter Karen and family.

She was born on Feb. 18, 1939, in Leesville, La., to Cecil Eugene and Edith May Thompson. She moved to Lamar, Colo., in her early years. She attended and graduated from Lamar

High School in 1957, then attended Lamar Community College.

It was in Lamar while Joan was a car-hop at the local A&W drive-in that she met her future husband, and love of her life, Richard Fluke from Eads, Colo.

When he asked her on their first date, Joan said, “ I can’t go out with a perfect stranger.” Dickie replied, “I’m in luck because I’m not perfect”, and this was

the beginning of a lifelong romance. They married five months later on Jan. 18, 1958, in Eads, and lived there for 10 years.

They started their family and Joan elected to devote her time to being an amazing loving mother and homemaker. They had two girls, Diane in 1962, Karen in 1966.

In 1968 they moved back to Lamar, where Joan was a Girl Scout leader and Square Dance Set mother and enjoyed playing the organ with Dick singing by her side. After the children were older, Joan began working at Sears part-time, joined a bowling league, played volleyball and competitive tennis, judged gymnastics, and became passionate about organic gardening.

Joan was an avid reader, sharp-witted, enjoyed writ-

ing children’s stories, and brilliant with crossword puzzles. She was a beautiful seamstress and later dis- Joan Fluke covered that she was a talented sketch artist. She lived in Lamar until a few years after her husband died in December 1990.

After the loss of Dick, Joan busied herself with volunteering with the children’s reading program at Washington Elementary and later learned bridge, joined a bridge club, and learned to play the bells with the group at the local Methodist Church.

She began traveling with friends and family throughout Colorado, to New York, Toronto, Louisiana,

California and Oregon.

She moved to Hartwick, New York in 2004 to live with her youngest daughter Karen and family. During these years, she helped with her grandchildren, planned and developed a beautiful organic vegetable garden, helped tend to the chickens, goats, and other variety of farm animals, helped with various fundraisers, and traveled to Quebec and Ontario, Maine, Florida and the Virgin Islands, and throughout the northern East Coast. Joan is remembered most for being a thoughtful, kind, and sweet soul with an unconditional loving heart.

Joan is survived by her daughter Diane Freed of Colorado Springs, Colo., as well as daughter Karen Fluke-Agostino and her husband Rico Agostino of Hartwick; grandchildren

Randy Gotovich and Angela Washburn of Colorado Springs, and Gracie, Ben, Maya and Huey Agostino of Hartwick; great-grandchildren Dylan and Brinley Washburn of Colorado Springs; Sister Nellie Bauer of Aurora, Colo.; several nieces and nephews and son-in-law Jerry Gotovich of Colorado Springs.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers Sherman Thompson in 1963, and Cecil ‘Tom’ (Sunny) Thompson in 2015.

The Celebration Of Life will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at All Souls Unitarian Church, 730 N. Tejon St. Colorado Springs, Co, 80903; officiated by Revered Nori Rost.

EAST WORCESTER – The Rev. Dr. George I. Goodwin, Jr. (aka “Rev”), 84, whose annual “Tent Meetings” in Pennsylvania drew hundreds of participants, died Aug. 1, 2019.

Dr. Goodwin was born on March 4, 1935, in Newburgh, the son of the late Rev. George Goodwin Sr., and Emma B. (Jones) Rev. Dr. Goodwin.

George Dr. Good- Goodwin win was a graduate of Hancock Central School, Class of 1954.

He furthered his education at SUNY Fredonia, The University of Vermont, Johnson State Teachers College in Vermont, and Kassel Conservatory of Music in Germany.

Dr. Goodwin served seven years in the Army Security Agency in the European and Far East Theaters. George lived in Japan for two years while serving and he and his wife Janet enjoyed two years together in Kassel Germany during his service.

Returning to the U.S., he received his bachelor’s degree from Berean Christian College in Kansas City, Kans., a Master of Theology and a Doctor of Ministry Degrees from Berean Graduate School of Divinity in San Francisco.

Dr. Goodwin served in churches in the New York and Troy Conferences of the United Methodist Church, three churches near Westford, Vt., The United Methodist Church of Treadwell, The Second Baptist Church of Worcester. and Gilchrist United Presbyterian Church of Doonan’s Corners, Delaware County, retiring in 2008.

For 30 years he held a “Tent Meeting” at the Nittany Antique Machinery Association Fall gathering at Centre Hall, Pa. The tent meeting began with a congregation of 60 and within four years the congregation had grown into the hundreds.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Harold, and four sisters, Rilla Mae Goodwin of Newburgh, Sally Borst of Longmont, Colo., Diane Marendo of Cold Springs, and Carolyn Sayre of Woodland, Calif.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Janet (Mack), and their four sons, George III and Richard of East Worcester, Stephen and wife, Justine (Naples) of Leland, N.C.; Paul and wife, Sherri (Beerse) of Manakin

Sabot, Va.; six granddaughters, several nieces and nephews; a brother, J. Dudley of Hopewell Junction, and a sister, Ellen Young of Binghamton.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s “Woodstock at 50” exhibit opened earlier this summer, featuring neverbefore-seen color film footage, photos and artifacts from the “Summer of Love.”

“We have 16 mm footage that Hamilton Biggar shot behind the scenes,” said Harris, who received his master’s from the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies, then worked at the Baseball Hall for a period.

Also on display is John Sebastian’s suit, photos by Jim Marshall and Jimmy Hendrix’s guitar strap from when he played “The Star Spangled Banner” – the guitar is on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll” exhibit, on through Oct. 1. The exhibit was co-curated by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“We have people come through our pop-up booth and tell us their stories of being there,” he said. “It had a massive impact on so many peoples’ lives.”

From Cooperstown, Meg and Martin – now married – drove down with their friend Scottie Robinson, abandoning his dad’s car four miles from the venue to walk to the concert.

and even though we had money for tickets, the fence was already knocked over, so we just walked right in,” he said.

Among the legendary acts they saw were Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, John Sebastian, Santana, Canned Heat, Sly and the Family Stone and Janis Joplin.

“Janis just had such a massive energy,” he said. “You just lay there in the field, soaking it all in.”

Meg had brought food, but they soon found themselves feeding more than just the three of them. “If you took out an orange, people just swarmed you, asking if they could

have a piece,” he said. “They hadn’t eaten in two days! So you might get one bite.”

They left Sunday morning, and a week later discovered they were pictured in the centerfold of Time Magazine’s reportage of the festival.

“We’re in the lower left,” he said. “It’s clearly us.”

Jim Howarth, a vice president at Delaware Otsego, the late Walter Rich’s railroad and a SUNY Oneonta student at the time of Woodstock, was also there. “I saw it on the news, and a friend and I just looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s go.’”

Their motorcycles allowed them to go where cars couldn’t – and also get out. “The next morning, I ran into a reporter who offered me $25 to drive him out so he could file his story,” he said. “He took my picture and I drove him to the nearest town, and then the next day, I was on the front cover of the Washington Star!”

But others, like Oneonta’s Mayor Gary Herzig, weren’t so lucky.

“My friend and I bought four tickets, for us and for our girlfriends,” he said. “I think they were $14.95, but that was a lot of money then.”

They drove up after work on Friday in Herzig’s 1963 Oldsmobile F85, but when they hit the Monticello exit off 17, traffic had come to a complete stop.

“The road was completely shut down,” he said. “It was pouring rain and our radiator was overheating. The only thing we could do was set up the tent and camp on the side of the road.”

“I was my son Simon’s Little League coach, so I would shoot the games and send photos to the local paper,” said Fruth.

“The editor called me and

asked if I would shoot high school college and football, and then a friend got me involved in shooting the Oakland A’s. But my passion was always shooting sandlots in New Mexico or old men playing stickball in New York City.”

Fruth’s photographs were published in her book, “Grassroots Baseball: Where Legends Begin,” on sale at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

“I was giving thought to doing something more after I retired,” said Idelson. “The more we talked about it, the more we realized we wanted to give back through amateur baseball.”

Fruth came up with the idea of stopping in towns along Route 66. “It’s Americana, it’s all these long-forgotten towns that might not have access to the game,”

said Idelson.

They travel in an RV to each stop, working with little league teams, American Legion teams, ball clubs and other charities to teach kids about the sport. “The coaches love knowing that people are seeing what they do,” he said. “So many of these leagues are driven by volunteers, and we want to celebrate those too.”

And joining them at each stop is a Hall of Famer or baseball Legend – including Gossage, Ozzie Smith, Johnny Bench and Jim Thome – to talk about their experience on the smalltown field and to play a game of catch with the kids.

“They’re real words of inspiration,” said Idelson.

“They tell them, ‘I came from a town like this, I made a career and so can you.’”

That was the Oneontan’s message after his run on “American Ninja Warrior” ended Monday night, Aug. 10, when he missed making it to the Top 13, the players who now go on compete in Las Vegas.
