tsego County’s congressman, John Faso, R-Kinderhook, voted on only two of seven recent gun-control measures, and in both cases supported loosening regulations on firearms, according to an analysis by National Public Radio released Monday, Feb. 19.

Faso voted in favor of concealed-carry reciprocity, which would require states to recognize each other’s regulations in this area; it failed.

He also voted for removing an Obama era provision that expanded the ability of people with mental illness to be denied access to guns; that measure passed.

Cooperstown Bat Company Featured On ESPN Segment At Astros’ Camp COOPERSTOWN

Cooperstown Bat Company bat thrilled Houston Astro José Altuve early today, and by 9 a.m. the Cooperstown company’s products were being praised on ESPN Sports Center.

As Bat Company owner Tim Haney described it in a call from Florida a few minutes ago, he was at Astros’ batting practice and asked Altuve if he’d like to try one of the Cooperstown bats.

“He took it over to the batting cage,” said Tim. “All of a sudden he went right to the batting machine, which was throwing pitches at 90 miles an hour.”

“It was a little nerve-racking,” said the local business-

man, who is visiting springtraining camps to get MLB players to try his wares.

He emerged a few minutes later and told Haney, “I just ordered six. I’d like to get them here as soon as possible. If the six are as good as this one, I’ll be ordering from you all season.”

‘Law & Order’ Star Neal Bid May Dim Democratic Hopes

The Daily Freeman’s story, from an interview after a Democratic candidates’ forum in Woodstock Sunday, Feb. 4, two days before she announced, reports she had been considering a run for a year.

In addition to her role on “Law & Order,” Neal portrayed Agent Abigail Borin in six episodes of “NCIS” between 2010 and 2014, the newspaper reported.

While her campaign web site focuses on her roots in the Hudson Valley, her Wikipedia entry says she was born in Alexandria, Va., and raised in Colorado and Ohio. She graduated from high school at 16 and attended college in Hawaii as a pre-med major, but left at 18 to model for Pond’s skin-care ads.

The Sunday afternoon forums in Cooperstown began Dec. 10 with Pat Ryan, who after fighting in Iraq returned to the Hudson Valley and founded a successful high-tech business.

David Clegg, a Kingston lawyer, spoke Jan. 7, and Brian Flynn, a partner with Caroline Kennedy’s husband, Ed Schlossberg, in an investment firm, on Jan. 28.

Antonio Delgado, a lawyer with Akin Gump, a law firm that generally supports Democrats, spoke Feb. 11, and Gareth Rhodes, a former aide to Governor Cuomo, will speak this Sunday, the 25th. Jeff Beals, also an Iraq War and State Department veteran, and a teacher in Woodstock, wraps up the Democratic speakers at 12:30 on March 18.

This year’s Relay for Life event will begin in Milford’s Wilber Park on Saturday, May 19, beginning at noon and will go until the sun goes down and fireworks.

In addition to the venue change, the event has also changed its name: from Cooperstown/Northern Otsego to all-encompassing Otsego. “We would love to see people from all across the county,” said Lauren Ferraro, the local Relay’s contact at the American Cancer Society’s Vestal office.

Staged for years at Cooperstown Dreams Park, the Relay had to move elsewhere last year. Planned for the Clark Sports Center, it had to be moved again at the last minute because extensive renovations to the gym weren’t complete.

As a result of the uncertainty, fewer than 100 people attended.

That prompted Relay organizers to rethink how to revive the event, and they

added vendors, food and live music to bring in families, not just the families of cancer survivors, who might otherwise see the event as off-limits.

Mickle is sister to Milford Village Mayor Brian Pokorny, who opened the doors to the Relay last year.

“I was new to it so I really didn’t know what to expect,” said Pokorny, “It was really an eye-opener for me. I thought it was going to be a gloomy, sad day. It turned out to be the total opposite of what I thought it’d be. It’s really more of a celebration of life.”

He added, “This year it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”

In addition to the change of venue, “there were also some last-minute staff changes that led to a lack of publicity for the event,” said Ferraro.

But with a well-attended kick-off event hosted Thursday, Feb. 15, at Upstate Bar and Grill in Cooperstown, she already feels that the Relay is back and better than ever.

Sternberg’s concern is that Neal’s campaign will damage the chances of six Democrats who are competing for their party’s nomination in the 19th District.

The primary is June 26.

He’s not alone in his assessment.

“That’s good news for us,” said Vice Casale, the county Republican chair.

“A three-way race with three viable candidates usually favors the incumbent.

The more the merrier.”

“Hopefully,” said Kim Muller, the former Oneonta mayor and county Democratic chair, “the voters will know the Democratic candidate is the stronger candidate and the one that will better represent them.”

Sternberg, with Sustainable Otsego as co-sponsor, has been organizing and acting as moderator of “town hall forums” Sunday afternoons since December at Cooperstown’s Village Hall. The forums have been attracting 100-150 attendees, mostly Democrats.

But Sustainable Otsego Moderator Adrian Kuzminski pointed out that his organization is non-partisan, and not only invited Neal – she is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4 – but intends to invite the Republican Faso as well.

“Is she a spoiler?”

Kuzminski asked rhetorically. “That’s what the Democrats are going to be thinking. She’s going to be asked that and she’s going to have to respond to that. Her positions are much closer to the six Democrats then they are to Faso.”

With the filing deadline for the primary April 12, Neal still could have chosen to enter the Democratic contest. “Why did she choose to run as an independent?”

Kuzminski asked.

ArtSpace Oneonta: A Success Waiting To Happen

C

reativity, of course, is making something out of nothing.

Or, less dramatically, recognizing potential where none was seen before and developing it.

There’s quite a bit of activity in downtown Oneonta – not just the former Bresee’s, now luxury apartments, but numerous restaurants (including the recently reopened Autumn, as inviting as ever), excellent small retailers (Wolf Wilde, The Green Toad and Razzle Dazzle leap to mind) and institutions.

Still, it oozes unrealized potential, particularly – among other spots – in the Oneonta Hotel block, the long-vacant ground floor of Java Island, the Sarkisian Brothers’ very visible second and third floors above Key Bank, and underutilized Old City Hall.

• Potential, because they aren’t making anymore downtown Oneontas; it’s an intact Victorian-era commercial district. (It didn’t have to be: The current display at the Oneonta History Center, 183 Main St., “Urban Development: Oneonta’s Downtown in the ’60s and ’70s,” reminds us that the plan was to tear down the whole southside of Main Street between Chestnut to the old post office, now City Hall. A narrow escape.)

It’s been almost two years since Governor Cuomo designated the City of Oneonta for $10 million in Downtown Redevelopment Initiative (DRI) money. The lengthy planning process

In Fergus Falls, Minn., population 13,400, ArtSpace spent $2.4 million to renovate the Hotel Kaddatz, closed since 1975. ArtSpace’s smallest live/work project, it contains 10 units of artist housing, plus 7,000 square feet of retail, including the Kaddatz Galleries, featuring prominent printmaker Charles Beck’s work and regional artists.

In Council Bluffs, Iowa, population 62,200, the Iowa West Foundation invited in ArtSpace in 2006, resulting in an $11.2 million renovation of a four-story International Harvester Warehouse into 36 units of artist housing and studio space, plus 5,320 square feet of retail.

Minot, N.D., population 48,700, is home to a U.S. Air Force Base. The $9.4 million Minot ArtSpace Lofts, with 34 units available, was the first new downtown building in 30 years. It is co-sponsored by the local arts council, plus The Children’s Music Academy. is over and the first money – $2.6 million – is now available, this piece enabling downtown-building owners to renovate upper stories.

That’s great. It signals the fun part is about to begin.

One eminently fun pros-

pect surfaced Thursday, Feb. 8, when Mayor Gary Herzig organized a teleconference with ArtSpace, a Minneapolis-based non-profit that “uses the tools of real-estate development to create affordable, appropriate places where artists can live and work.”

Waukegan, Ill., population 88,000, is halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago. ArtSpace renovated historic nine-story, 140-room Karcher Hotel for $14.6 million, creating 36 units, plus 2,811 square feet of ground-floor retail and community space for art-friendly businesses and non-profits.

Sure, it has projects in New York City, Chicago, Seattle and New Orleans that include apartments, studios and first floor-space for stores, often arts-related.

But its smallest venture is in Fergus Falls, Minn., population 13,400. Oneonta can draw on 100,000 people

from Otsego and Delaware counties.

Hitler in Vienna after the fall of Austria. In occupied France she volunteered in the nurse’s corps and cared for starving children. “In Europe, the bakers are not allowed to sell bread less than four days old,” she declared, describing the desperate food situation. Ninety-three percent of Europe is in “underground groups” according to Miss Sereny who explained that they help with evacuations and sabotage. Miss Sereny has been in this country since the day before Pearl Harbor but plans to return to Europe as soon as possible.

Iroquois Farm’s famed Grasslands Market has closed.

David Welsh, who became manager of the market when it opened in 1936, has retired. He came here from Sprigfield Center where he had been head shepherd at the Wardwell Estate. The market is situated a mile south of Cooperstown on Route 28. Prior to the opening of the market, Grasslands had a retail mea outlet at its farm just south of the site of the market.

Second Lieutenant Terence C. Graves of Groton, formerly of Edmeston, was killed in Viet Nam on Saturday, February 17 in Kuang Tri province. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Graves of Groton were notified of his death on Sunday.

Second Lieutenant Graves was serving in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Paratroopers. During his high school years in Edmeston, where his father was principal at Edmeston Central School, Lieutenant Graves was an outstanding scholar and athlete, competing in football, basketball and baseball.

175 YEARS AGO

The 22nd of February being the anniversary of George Washington, the Father of his Country, was commemorated by the Temperance Society of this place at the Presbyterian Church, where John B. Steele, Esq., of Oneonta, delivered an appropriate address, creditable to him as a Scholar, Patriot and Philanthropist. Ge. A.W. Riley also spoke in the afternoon and evening, with special reference to the Temperance Cause, and so effectively too, that 126 names were added to the Pledge at the close of the services. The Rev. Mr. Strobel, the Rev. Mr. Ingmire, and the Rev. Mr. Eddy, officiated in the pulpit in a fervent and acceptable manner, and the Vocal and Instrumental music interspersed throughout the services, added interest and gratification to the scene. The auditory was very numerous, embracing both sexes, and manifested a deep feeling in the observances by their orderly conduct and undivided attention.

The Alabama Constitution and Alabama’s Voter Registration Oath. No man can vote who will not swear he is in favor of Negro equality. Negro suffrage in the South is certainly an experiment and may work badly. If it does, it ought to be within the power of the people of the State to apply a remedy. But the people of Alabama, under the new Constitution, were to have no such right. They must accept that particular measure as one of the fixed and immutable principles of their Government and must solemnly promise never to attempt to change it. No such requirement as a condition of voting was ever before heard of in any country claiming to be under popular institutions. Many men in Alabama are willing to give Negro suffrage a trial. Some favor it nakedly. Some would agree to with educational limits.

But not one of these is ready to commit himself to uphold it now and forever more.

Even, Main Street, where it is most needed, is yet without a sewer pipe. Isolated cases of typhoid fever are believed to have been a result.

Talk about what rich people out of their abundance may do in the way of charity – last week the operatives at Phoenix Mill raised a purse of $50 for one of the men who had suddenly lost his wife, after the birth of a child. Very creditable.

Christian Michele Pagillo, age 15 months, will get some relief from cerebral palsy. Grace Utter, age 6, of Cherry Valley will get kidney dialysis support, a condition she has had since age 3.

Citizens United Enables Wealthy To Buy Control Of U.S. Congress

efore the Great Reform Act of 1832 about a third of the members of the British Parliament were elected from socalled rotten boroughs. These were districts with voting populations under a 100 entirely owned by a lord or patron. The voters were generally tenants or employees or other dependents and were commonly bribed or coerced to vote in open air elections by a show of hands for the single candidate normally put up by the owner, either himself or someone of his choosing.

Our own Congressional districts might be described as rotten boroughs as well, though for somewhat different reasons. The problem now is that Congressional seats are essentially auctioned off to whomever the highest bidders happen to be.

This has long been a practice, but it was officially blessed by the

2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, which sanctioned money as a form of free speech and squelched ADRIAN any meaningful campaign KUZMINSKI finance reform.

What Citizens United did was to prohibit the government from restricting so-called “independent expenditures” by corporations, non-profits, unions, and other organizations and committees supporting or opposing candidates.

Such groups can now spend as much as they like as long as they claim to have no connection or coordination with the candidates or campaigns in question. Limits

on direct personal contributions to candidates, campaigns, or party committees remain in place, but Citizens United allows donors a way to indirectly spend, through so-called independent groups, virtually unlimited amounts on political campaigns.

Congressional districts have about 700,000 residents, and it takes millions of dollars to run a race. The prospect of large donors being able to spend enormous amounts to influence voters for or against local candidates gives them a lot of clout – so much so that candidates can’t ignore what those donors want. Of course, anyone can play this game, but only if you’re fabulously wealthy.

The relatively small contribution most people can afford to make to candidates isn’t enough to buy the kind of influence over policy which big donors exercise.

Perhaps the worst aspect of this

If the British were able to reform “Rotten Boroughs” in 1832, why can’t the U.S. reform rotten Congressional Districts today?

is that big donors are typically from outside the district, and often from very far away. According to opensecrets.org, the average Congressional district gets only 39 percent of its campaign contributions from within the district, leaving a whopping 61 percent as outside money.

In our 19th Congressional

District here in New York, it’s even worse. In the 2016 election, Zephyr Teachout and John Faso each raised over $2 million. In Zephyr’s case 84 percent of her funding was from outside the district; in Faso’s case it was 80 percent.

Both SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College have finearts programs, and those students now graduate and go elsewhere. With nice apartments with reasonable rents, studio space at hand and a supportive arts community, what’s not to like?

Fergus Falls, Minn., built its Kaddatz Gallery around Charles Beck’s etchings, left. But Otsego County has Frank Eckmair etchings, right.

Interesting part of ArtSpace projects elsewhere is the retail component. The Kaddatz Galleries in the Fergus Falls project is built around noted printmaker Charles Beck; but we have Frank Eckmair.

That Principally Prints (framing), Artware (art and art supplies) and The

Artisans’ Guild (artisans’ coop) are within steps of any downtown site proves a market already exists. And galleries – Michael Stolzer Fine Arts and non-profit CANO – are in the neighborhood.

If ArtSpace Oneonta contained retail space, these entities could participate,

or they could be part of a growing core of arts retailing in the downtown.

Not to mention theater (Foothills and the Oneonta Theater; maybe this is the opportunity for collaboration) and bands (at numerous bars) bolstered

by SUNY Oneonta’s Music Industry major – the Wauke-

gan, Ill., ArtSpace includes performance or rehearsal space.

Finally, the City of the Hills Art Festival has lagged, but this shot in the arm to arts tourism could give it new life. Such events are hugely successful elsewhere – for instance, Colorscapes in Norwich every fall; you always run into Otsego County folks there. Why not here?

• Thomas Jefferson famously said, Open the door by the smooth handle; i.e., take advantage of the ready opportunity.

Art is thriving in Otsego AND Delaware counties, and an ArtSpace could make it a magnet for all that existing ferment.

It might further be said

that some of what the DRI is aiming to accomplish is a bit fuzzy. For instance, the Food & Beverage Innovation Center – a catalyst for craft beer and value-added ag products – sounds like a good idea, but hasn’t been, and perhaps can’t, be captured in an accessible slogan.

Arts is happening spontaneously everywhere around here. As the late mayor Dick Miller did in May 2011 in the Arts Summit at Foothills – 85 people attended – maybe ArtSpace could bring all this positive activity under a big tent.

Charlie Bremer thinks so.

“Whatever Oneonta can do with ArtSpace would be one of the best things Oneonta can do,” he said. And he knows the potential.

You can’t do that anymore.

You can’t even tell if there is a shoulder on the road. With snow in the trench it makes it look like there is a shoulder. If you drive off the road your car is in big damage and expenses, thanks to the highway department.

It is like an epidemic in this county: Workers have lost touch with the function of their jobs, service to the people that pay them. When is the highway department going to wake up and start making safe roads for drivers.

That Ever-Mystifying IDA COLUMN/From A4 is not quite so clear, is how members of the board of the IDA might be removed from their boa positions.

According to the aforementioned Freeman’s Journal editorial, “...the county representatives hold all the cards. County Attorney Coccoma had advised Bliss’ predecessor that Otsego Now board members serve ‘at will,’ and can be removed by the county board at any time.” The editorial adds, “...Before anything like that happens, however, the Bliss Administration should, in consultation with Otsego Now, come up with a common idea of what economic development should be...

Then the reps could decide who stays and, if some clique doesn’t want to play ball, who’s out.”

Yet when we went online to research the issue of removing a member from an IDA board, we were unable to find any such clear-cut information. What we did find was a great deal of information about IDAs, all of which we found to be most educational as we must admit that IDAs are a subject of which we felt we knew less than we might need to know. But it is still not clear to us as to not only how, but why, an IDA board member could be removed from the board.

Nor is it exactly clear to us what the role of the county Board of Representatives, other than having the chairman of the County Board nominate IDA board members, might be given the fact that the IDA is “...not an office or department of the Otsego County government.”

• In fact, in Industrial Development Agencies in New York State, prepared by Alan G. Hevesi in May of 2006, it is pointed out that “Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs) are public benefit corporations originally authorized by the Industrial

Development Agency Act of 1969 and governed by the provisions of Article 18-A of the General Municipal Law.... “...According to the authorizing statute, the purpose of an IDA is to promote, develop, encourage and assist in acquiring, constructing, improving, maintaining or equipping certain facilities, thereby advancing the job opportunities, health, general prosperity and the economic welfare of the people of New York. Each IDA is an independent public benefit corporation established by a special act of the State Legislature at the request of a sponsoring municipality, and each is expected to act in the interest of that particular local government and its residents.”

Thus, we would tend to think that until such time it can be shown that the Otsego County IDA is not acting in the best interests of Otsego County and its residents, it should be allowed to continue its work. After all, having read the resumes of the current board members, we think they are a rather impressive group of individuals, with backgrounds that include business ownership as well as leaders in the areas of healthcare, insurance, banking, not-for-profit service organizations and construction, not to mention a board member who works for a company, heading up all business development activities and initiatives for the firm worldwide.

• So, before we start suggesting that members from the Otsego County IDA board should be cut, we would like to take a step back and let them do the work for which they seem so eminently qualified. In fact, given the seeming state of the economy in the county, we should probably thank them all for their willingness to take on the job of serving on the IDA board.

section of the old highway that had been buried,� said Goodwin. “It had been buried, but in the mid 90s, it was cleared of debris and new structures were put into place to prevent rock fall.

But all of that burned.� “It was so beautiful,� said Claudia Brooks, also a volunteer at the Vista House. “But we rebuilt before, and we’ll rebuild again.�

Much of the damage to Oneonta Falls concerned the log jam, which occurred in the mid 1990s after three large boulders fell into the stream, causing the jam. “After the fire, more logs piled up,� he said. “It used to be that hikers would climb the log jam, but now, it’s too much of an obstacle.�

A few of the trails have been re-opened since the fire. Latourell Falls, 2.5

miles from the Vista House, was unaffected, and Multnomah Falls visitor’s center remains open, but hikers have to peer at the majestic waterfall behind a chainlink fence.

But re-opening Oneonta Gorge is not a high priority, reported Goodwin. “Right now, the biggest priority is getting the Pacific Crest trail re-built and open to through-hikers,� he said. “Oneonta Falls could be open as late as mid-summer.�

Though he decried the damage as “a tragedy,�

Goodwin said he believed the sentence was fair. “At least he was willing to own up to it,� he said. “He seemed engaged in the whole process.�

Schneider, co-proprietor of the Landmark Inn with wife Robin and a member of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce board, confirmed during a Monday, Feb. 19, interview that he’s in for the duration. “Fred represents a dynamic that just doesn’t have a voice on the board,� said village Republican Chair Vince Casale. “People should consider putting one of our local businesspeople on the board, to round out the knowledge base that’s there.�

Casale conceded that, with no opposition, Democratic Village Trustee Ellen Tillapaugh, the deputy mayor, “will be the next mayor� after the March 20 elections.

With Schneider running against two Democratic incumbent trustees, Cindy Falk and Jim Dean, for two open seats, Tillapaugh’s elevation will create another trustee vacancy on the Village Board, and she will then have the authority to appoint her replacement.

Pointing out that currently “four people are invested and want to serve,� Casale argued that, after election day, the new mayor should consider naming whomever gets the low vote to the vacancy.

In the interview, Schneider said he wonders if a Republican can be elected in the Village of Cooperstown in the current climate, even a

“moderate Republican� as he is. “I’m a Republican who believes everybody should pull their own weight – or ought to try,� he said, adding he believes there is generally too much regulation.

As for local issues, he recalled trustees “dressing down� chamber Executive Director Matt Hazzard in the past year. “That said,� he continued. “I have no doubt in my mind there could be a better relationship between the two.�

Several times, Schneider said he intends to pursue implementation of the recently updated Comprehensive Master Plan, which pays a lot of attention to the downtown, in particular getting more people living there.

That’s even more important with CVS moving out and the Cooperstown General Store closing down in recent months, he said, adding he believes his experience as an insurance company executive implementing master plans will be particularly valuable.

As a chamber board member, he’s been seeking to develop data, noting that, without it, who can tell if the CVS and general store departure are the result of individual decisions or part of a trend.

After graduating from Jeff Katz’s alma mater, Schneider went on to SUNY Geneseo. (Katz went to SUNY Binghamton. And, as it happens, the two men have other things in common.

Both are Mets fans, and Schneider has a display in the Landmark’s front hall with photos and his tickets from the sixth game of the 1986 World Series. And both are baseball writers, with Schneider publishing “Cats in a Chowder� in 2006; he’s about to send a second book to his publisher.)

Graduating, Schneider entered the insurance business, serving in sales, then as an executive, on Long Island, and in Syracuse, Atlanta, Orlando, Columbus and other points before taking a twoyear hiatus to build a home “with my own hands� in Saranac Lake. At one point, he was a vice president for Preferred Mutual, headquartered in New Berlin.

He and Robin married in Rochester and, on their way to visit his family on Long Island, stopped in Cooperstown for the first time. “We want to live here,� they said to each other, a wish they repeated on subsequent visits. But opportunities drew the family elsewhere, as they raised two daughters, Casey, now 29 and living in Washington, and Summer, 24 and living in New York City.

Finally, opportunity knocked: Five years ago they bought the inn from Ed and Margie Landers.

“It’s a little nerve-racking at first,” said Oneonta’s Phillip Wright. “It’s cold for a second when you first jump in, but my main focus is to just get to the other side.”

Having done the jump twice before, I thought my pre-jump jitters would subside when I got to the lake. They didn’t.

By the time the icy cold harness – in the event I sank – was placed around me, I knew I was committed to jumping into the hole in the ice.

Gwilt has been one of the highest-earning jumpers in plunge history, raising thousands of dollars each year. “This year, I brought in $7,450, and there is still more coming in.”

everything about it. “You come for the party, but you stay for the charity,” he said.

Wright has jumped for the past three years, and loves it more each time. “It’s just a great event that helps bring the local community together for a great cause,” he said.

I’ve been to more jumps than I can recall. Being part of the

Waters family, it’s hard not to get involved somehow. But something felt different about this year’s jump. People seemed happier, the cheers louder, and the event all-around more magical.

“From what I’ve heard, everyone thought it was a really special year,” said organizer Brenda Waters. “There was a very positive energy around the whole event.”

What made this year different?

Thicker ice, beautiful sunshine, and relatively warm temperatures.

Fans gathered on the ice to cheer; in recent years, the ice has been too thin.

Temperatures had risen into the 40s the two days before the jump; but the night before, the mercury dropped to 13, firming up the surface enough for the spectators.

“It was great to have everyone back out on the ice again this

year,” said Jamie Waters, Brenda’s husband and co-organizer. “That’s how we always used to do it, and I’m glad we could do it like that again this year.”

In addition to 11 children, some of this year’s revenues also went to Catskill Area Hospice, the Portlandville Methodist Church, the Milford Fire Department, and eight other local organizations.

“That’s the payoff for the whole event,” said Gwilt. “Seeing those families get those big checks (at a reception that evening at Oneonta’s Elks Club, “it does the heart good.”

My suggestion: If you find yourself on an ice block about to jump into 33-degree water; don’t think, just jump.

Before I could think about how cold that water would feel, I was leaping through the air, bracing

myself for what was coming next.

I hit the water, took a second to embrace the cold, and then focused on putting one arm in front of the other.

With my family waiting 30 feet away with towels, I swam as quickly as I could, climbed up the ladder, posed for the obligatory photo, and ran to the hot tub.

My 30 seconds of cold were done, at least until next year.

But each year, I compare my 30 seconds of shivering to the struggle that many of these children face every day. Knowing that I played a role in helping them, makes it all worth it.

MIDDLEFIELD – Shirley G. Tabor 79, of Middlefield, passed away Saturday Feb.10, 2018, at home.

Born June 5, 1938 at home to Howard B. Tabor and Bertha (Graham) Tabor.

Married Gladys (Sammie) Knox on June 11, 1960.

Schooling was in Middlefield and graduated from Cherry Valley Central School in 1956.

While in school he joined the National Guard for 8 years, first in Richfield Springs and then Oneonta.

Then he worked for Saxton Grocery Store in Cooperstown, and then Westville Leghorns Poultry in Westville, Barringer Motors in Cherry Valley,and Oneonta Tire and Auto, now Known as Car Quest Auto Parts, in Oneonta for 40 years. He was a member of the Middlefield Methodist Church and Roseboom Cemetery Assoc. Had been Master of the Westville Grange #540 and Master of Otsego County, Pomona Grange. Served as Junior Deputy and Deputy for Otsego, Herkimer, Schoharie, Fulton, Montgomery Counties, until disbanded and National Grange 7th degree member.

Shirley is survived by his wife Gladys (Sammie), son Lawrence (Larry) and daughter-in-law Catherine Allen, Granddaughter Logan Grace Allen Tabor. COOPERSTOWN – Ward C. Fish, Jr., who spent almost two decades at Remington Arms, peacefully passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2018. He was 79.

Ward, known as Jim, was the son of the late Dorothy (Sheridan) and Ward C. Fish, Sr. of Richfield Springs. Jim was born on the family farm on March 7, 1938.

He met his “huggy bear,” Merri Lynn (Macomber) at the roller skating rink in Richfield Springs.

They were married in August 1959 in St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Springfield Center.

They called Fly Creek home for 35 years. Jim worked locally before

COOPERSTOWN – Evelyn J. Gray, 78, who spent her career in downtown retail in Coopertown, passed away late Monday night, Feb. 12, 2018, at Cooperstown Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing.

A native of Cooperstown, she was born March 15, 1939, one of 13 children of Orlando and Nellie M. (Page) Bridger.

Evelyn lived her entire life in the Cooperstown area, and for 30 years was employed

by Eric Hill as a clerk for the Farm & Home Bargain Center in The Stables on Main Street. She also worked for a time at Ron Brown’s Factory Store in the Doubleday Field parking area.

New Film Society Aiming At All Genres, Audiences

Growing up, Joey wanted to be a filmmaker, but at Cooperstown High School he took a class in writing about movies and shifted his focus to working with film.

At SUNY Purchase, he majored in Cinema Studies.

“For the last three years, I’ve been doing marketing with the Glimmerglass Film Days,” he said. “I just fell in love with the programming aspect of film.”

He also noticed a following for unusual and independent films. “The Cabin Fever Film Festival showed ‘Loving Vincent’ and it was packed,” he said. “Whenever the Glimmerglass Film Days show experimental films, people really turn out for it.”

He also gave considerable thought to what sort of films would play well to local audiences. “I wanted to show ‘Bad Day at Black Rock’” – a 1955 noir-western starring Spencer Tracy and

Anne Francis – “because it takes place in a small town, and I wanted to see what a small town would think of it.”

Though some of the films are not rated, several of them do have an R-rating.

Refreshments will be provided, and Katz hopes that people will stay after the film to discuss what they saw. The series continues twice monthly through May. “There’s just such a huge difference between watching a film on Amazon or Netflix and seeing it with other people,” he said. “It’s a whole different experience.”

And he’s already beginning to think ahead to the next season’s offerings. “I’d love to show a Kurosawa film,” he said.

Katz hopes that, more than a short series, it will be a way to encourage Cooperstown to begin looking at a movie theater.

“During the last Glimmerglass Film Days, there were screenings that were over capacity,” he said. “Peggy Parsons, the director, said that we needed a movie theater, and the entire audience started clapping.”
