Horowitz Foundation for the Arts. â–şLEE SMITH, one of the most dominant relief pitchers in baseball history, visited where his plaque will be at the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday, Feb. 5. By Lambert’s order, any tenants who remain in the building after 4:30 p.m. on the 7th will be removed the following morning by sheriff’s deputies. “I will have signed orders of eviction ready to hand down to the sheriff,� said the judge. “But hopefully, we will not have to use them.�

aula DiPerna, global environmental policy strategist and former Congressional candidate from Otsego County, was invited to testify before the Committee on Natural Resources at a hearing entitled “Climate Changer: The Impacts and the Need To Act” on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Longworth House Office Building in Washington, DC. A special advisor at CDP

North America, DiPerna will have five minutes to present oral testimony to the congressional committee, with the opportunity to submit a longer written statement. Members of the committee will have five minutes to comment and ask questions of DiPerna.

CDP runs a global disclosure system that enables companies, cities, states and regions to measure and manage their environmental impacts.

Last June, attending a

special Vatican conference of environmental leaders in Rome, she discussed climate DiPerna change and other environmental issues with Pope Francis.

The invitation was extended by Arizona representative Raúl Manuel Grijalva, D-3, committee chair.

Father, Son, Dog Find Carnival Medallion Taped To Side Of Garbage Can

The medallion was hidden on the back right side of the trash cans at Badger Park. “I felt fine once I found it!” said Frankie.

Emma researched the Derrick Stack, while Mom and the kids searched the parks. “Jennifer and Matthew went to Badger Park a few days earlier,” said Frank. “I just had a feeling about it.”

Two clues stood out to him – “getting board” made him think of the hockey boards on the skating rink

“I knew it had to be in a garbage can,” he said. “But we couldn’t figure out the Derrick Stack. It must have been in Pioneer Park at one point.”

According to Mohican Flowers’ Carol Waller, whose husband, Bill, devised the clues this year, the Derrick Stack was the chimney on furnaces from when the Derrick family had greenhouses in what is now Badger Park. Their name was written on the side, and the chimney was demolished when Bob “The Badger” Seaver gave the park to the village.

And Frank wasn’t even going to let last week’s polar vortex keep his family from that prize. “It was about 7:15 at night (Thursday, Jan. 31) Emma and Matthew were doing homework and Frankie was in his pajamas, and I said to him, ‘I know where it is.’”

Frankie got his coat and his boots, and the two

returned to Badger Park.

“I turned the truck around and turned the headlights on the garbage boxes, and we started looking.”

Even their one-year-old pup, Rocco, got in on the fun. “He was digging around the garbage box!” said Frankie.

They posted it on Facebook to let everyone know it had been found, and On Friday, Feb. 1, Frankie brought the medallion to school to show to his classmates. “I told him he had to treat it like a lottery ticket,” said Frank. “And to not let it out of his sight!”

They also had to endure being minor celebrities for the weekend. “People were coming up to us and saying they’d looked in Badger Park the day before, or that they were going there over the weekend to look!” he said.

Frank said they haven’t decided what to spend the $500 prize money on yet.

“Maybe we’ll get matching tattoos,” he joked. “To commemorate our victory.”

he debate around here has appeared to be all about energy.

Listening to 19 content-rich, tightly packed presentations – 15 minutes, 15 minutes, 15 minutes – at the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce’s “Energy Summit: Infrastructure & Economy,” Thursday, Jan. 31, at The Otesaga, you’d have come to a different conclusion.

The discussion’s all about jobs.

Energy is the means. Which can best produce jobs, gas or renewables?

Ideally, both.

There were woeful predictions.

We know The Earth is under challenge. The question locally is, what is our role in fixing it? The numbers convincingly argue, not much. Otsego County is micro; the solution is macro.

With 0.018 percent of the U.S. population (less than 2/100ths of one percent), and 0.00008 percent of the world’s (less than 1/100,000th of one percent), the fate of The Earth isn’t going to be decided between Richfield Springs and East Worcester.

This frees us to think about Otsego County, what we need today, and what the opportunities are in the near-tomid future.

• Still, with the local anti-gas movement willing and probably able to tie up any gas-using undertaking in court, it makes sense to focus: How many renewable-related jobs can we get here and how quickly?

One graph discussed by Lou Allstadt, the former Mobil Oil executive vice president turned renewables pioneer, showed that, nationally, green jobs are being created more quickly than fossil-fuel jobs.

“All told, nearly 1 million Americans are working near- or full-time in the energy-efficiency, solar, wind, and alternative vehicles sectors,” Forbes magazine wrote of the 2017 U.S. Energy & Employment report. “This is almost five times the current employment in the fossil-fuel electric industry, which includes coal, gas, and oil workers.”

It’s only going to get better.

Many of these jobs are for the carpenters, electricians and plumbers of the future, and NYSERDA’s speaker reported the state has allocated $70 million in Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology Training. How Hartwick College professor and can we get some of that money?

• A particularly enticing idea came from Mark Davies, the Hartwick College professor who chairs Oneonta’s Environmental Board: “eco-commercial parks,” where, for instance, one company’s waste product may be another’s raw material.

Mr. Higgins is obviously a pretty smart guy, who must know a lot about energy, but struggles with reading the word “biomass.” He said, I “never mentioned” biomass in my original article. For the record, below is the second paragraph from that original article; bio-mass is mention twice.

“How about establishing a Greater Oneonta Municipal Microgrid System with produced heat and electricity dedicated for use by our industrial sector and perhaps our large energy us-

ers, fueled by biomass, solar, wind and backed-up by natural gas. Who could be against it?

“Put the generation plant in a central location within the 270-acre former D&H Rail-yard … This state-ofthe-art, 21st-century energy producing concept, one powered primarily with renewable energy sources including bio-mass, hilltop wind, on site ground and rooftop solar would be seen as a model for others to follow!”

Now, back to Mr. Higgins, no need to apologize! That said, it’s clear to see in his responses that he’s anti-natural-gas, especially fracked natural gas. So am I! My “microgrid concept” would specifically support expanded commercial and jobs growth with upwards of 90 percent from renewable power sources.

It might also provide heat and electricity to existing businesses, to free-up existing natural gas flow for those who really rely on it, perhaps allowing others to transition out of coal and oil.

Let me reiterate, I truly hope Greater Oneonta’s public and private leaders push for further study on the creative idea which I was willing to put forth. I’d be glad to help!

Anyway, I put my energy-producing ideas for Oneonta on paper; I’d love to hear Mr. Higgins’ positive energy plan for Otego.

announced that membership in the Citizens’ Service Corps will be open to candidates who complete an initial training period of fifty hours of work on the war records now being assembled in the Central Quarters of the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown. The necessity of preserving the records of WWII has been emphasized by the sad experience of the First World War. Thousands of hours and much futile experimentation might have been saved both our military and civilian officials if a satisfactorily arranged and catalogued record of procedure in the 1914-1918 War had been kept. Early in World War II it was decided that this mistake must not be repeated and a systematic and detailed plan for the preservation of war records was evolved. In the Cooperstown area the State Historical Association with its excellent handling and storage facilities has been designated as the repository for such war materials.

175 YEARS AGO

Brutal Outrage – An outrage of the most aggravated and brutal character was perpetrated in Livingston County on Friday night. A person named Alonzo Bates, who resides in Wyoming County, stopped at a tavern with the intention of staying all night. During the evening he heard that a respectable widow with three children – the eldest a daughter of 17 years – lived near. He announced his intention in a boasting manner, of passing the night at her house.

He found the mother absent and the family in charge of the daughter – and locking the door he compelled the defenseless girl, under the threat of instant death, to pass the night with him. Towards morning he left the house, but was soon overtaken and brought before the nearest Magistrate, by whom he was held to bail in the sum of $500.

A Run On The Banks – On Friday and Saturday last, Mr. J.H. February 8, 1894 aviators, many who have seen service overseas and others from the various aviation camps in this country, are in Cooperstown. And, it is expected within a few months when the Mary Imogene Bassett hospital is completed the number will be increased to at least two or three hundred. The hospital is a highly specialized institution. Aviators who have become “stale” by excessive flying and who are in need of rest and recreation are sent to Cooperstown where they can enjoy themselves for several weeks with the strict discipline of military life somewhat relaxed. The want of oxygen at the high altitudes which the bird men frequent in time has a detrimental effect upon the physical condition of the men. They become nervous and restless. After a careful consideration of conditions the Surgeon General decided that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Hence the Cooperstown project was decided upon as a means of giving rest and relaxation for the aviators.

Energywise, We Can Have It All: Natural Gas Now, Renewables Later

T

he Otsego County Chamber board and president deserve a heartfelt “thank you” for having the vision and courage to host the “Energy Summit.”

Speakers from New York and Pennsylvania talked about fossil fuels and renewables including biomass, ethanol, electric cars, wind, solar and geo-thermal. At the end of the day, it was clear that, although promising for the future, renewables are not currently capable of replacing or offsetting our demand for energy provided by fossil fuels.

That does not mean we should abandon our pursuit of alternative sources of energy that emit less carbon and are cost-competitive with fossil fuels.

Natural gas, our cleanest burning fossil fuel, is currently abundant and inexpensive relative to renewables

and thus offers us a bridge to the time when one or more renewables is capable of replacing it by being available, reliable and cost-competiMIKE tive.

ZAGATA If a renewable is going to totally replace a fossil fuel it must be available 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. If it can’t meet that criterion, then it will be relegated to being part of a mix or blend of energy sources.

At present, solar does not meet that criterion, as the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours per day and we don’t yet have a mechanism of storing energy created

during the day while it is shining.

• Both Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig and state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, echoed the need to pursue future renewable alternative energy sources, but they were clear in their recognition of the fact that we need natural gas and we need it now.

As the temperature hovered around minus-2 degrees and attendees were talking about frozen pipes, one speaker said that we shouldn’t upgrade our infrastructure for natural gas now because it might derail their agenda to replace it with one or more renewables.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the organization he represented would be willing to pay to thaw the pipes that froze in the meantime. Should they be required to?

of Adventure Programs. “Cross-country skiing gets you out and enjoying the winter months, keeps you from being sedentary.”

But unlike downhill skiing, where you need to travel to faraway mountains, you can ski free in your own backyard.

“When we came up for the first Winter Carnival in 1969, I saw all these cars out on the ice,” said Waller.

“I took my car out, but I had the wrong tires on, so I didn’t do very well.

“But Hank Phillips” – at the time, he ran Withey’s Pharmacy on Main Street – “he had this funny little Volkswagen, and he beat the pants off everyone.”

But Bill was undeterred, and he entered every year.

“You would hear the ice cracking underneath the tires,” said his wife, Carol, the former Cooperstown mayor and Mohican Flowers’ proprietor.

“It was so scary!”

Phillips took a lot of trophies, until one year, a new challenger approached.

But the lakefront fun wasn’t just for the adults.

The Boy Scouts would host their Klondike Derby on the ice, racing from station to station practicing skills including building a fire and splitting wood, all for the glory of a trophy.

“We handed out so many trophies in those days,” Bill said. “We gave ribbons up to sixth or seventh place for the kids.”

And just because it was snowy didn’t mean people couldn’t enjoy a round of golf. “We’d spray paint circles in the snow and you’d have to aim your ball for that spot,” he said.

“We used to have such big crowds gathered at Lakefront Park.”

This year, there will be mini-golf on Main Street, noon-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11.

would race down the lake towards downtown, where the chili cook-off would be waiting to warm them up.

“If you were smart, you just went and got chili without having to ski!” said Waller.

And there were other ways to warm up as well, including $3 all-youcan-drink Budweiser – in conjunction with the Hager family, members of the Busch clan – at Redman’s.

“The beer was 2 inches thick on the floor,” said Waller. “It was flowing out the door!”

But insurance concerns and warmer winters changed the landscape of the festival, and although the lake is no longer a scene of the festivities, the lip synch, the hike and the sled races still remain part of the fun, just as they did in the old days.

“One year, Bill Streck did ‘Walk Like an Egyptian!’ in the lip synch,” said Carol.

“Good times, good fun.”

“The locals always enjoy it,” said Waller. “It’s our event. You go out, you see people, you have a good time.”

John ‘Gobbie’ Garbera, 72; Richfield Springs Mayor, Remington Employee RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Former Village Mayor John ‘Gobbie’ Garbera II, 72, of Johnson Street, passed away Friday evening, Feb. 1, 2019, in his home, with the comfort of his loving family by his side.

He was born on Aug. 15, 1946, in Little Falls, a son of the late John and Ann Spytko Garbera. A lifelong resident of Richfield Springs, he was educated at RSCS. In April 2007, he married

the love of his life, Xin Jian, and they shared a devoted union for 12 years, until his passing. She is a true “Angel” and devoted caregiver.

He started his working career with Interstate Window when they were hiring, and held many jobs including helping build the Titan mobile homes building locally. He worked at the Herkimer Tool & Machining Corp. in Herkimer. In 1975, he was

Gobbie was a member of the Richfield Lions Club for more than 25 years and a current member of SAL Post 616 of Richfield Springs.

He also had a passion for cars, many nice ones with the “Cuda” being the most memorable.

He had many friends. He enjoyed being involved, loved to laugh, loved to sit and John share stories.

Garbera He was a dedicated son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa and uncle. For all of us, he will be deeply and truly missed Surviving besides his

wife, Xin Jian, is his daughter, Colleen Auger and her companion, Adam Mitchell; stepdaughter Wei (Sandy) Huang of Richfield Springs; brother Dan and wife Suzanne Garbera of Richfield Springs; two grandchildren, Allison and Ryan Auger of Richfield Springs; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

COOPERSTOWN – Jennifer Kaye Huntington, owner of Cooperstown Holstein Corp., died Dec. 30, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jennifer participated in medical research on cancer treatments and surgeries, hoping to help those who would continue the fight when she no longer could.

Born Feb. 28, 1962, Jennifer was the oldest of five daughters born to Peter and Evelyn (Ellis) Huntington.

She attended Cooperstown Central School and followed her father’s footsteps in attending Cornell University.

A skilled cytologist, Jennifer returned to managing her family’s farm, partnering with her father until his death in 2008.

Jennifer continued his vision of promoting the dairy industry and supporting local youth through dairy activities.

She shared these passions, values, and commitments

with her daughter, Molly Watson, her stepson, Andrew Watson, and her companion, Jennifer Eric Watson, Huntington thus creating a strong family legacy.

Jennifer volunteered numerous hours each week supporting programs for youth, the dairy industry, agriculture, animal care, and

land sustainability.

In her leisure time, Jennifer was an avid knitter, testing patterns for designers and creating one-of-a-kind works of art.

A celebration of Jennifer’s life will be planned for the summer.

Anyone wishing to honor her may do so by contributing to a youth, dairy, or animal service program.

Mary Imogene Carter; Bassett Healthcare Namesake

COOPERSTOWN – Mary Imogene Carter, R.N., 93, named after Mary Imogene Bassett and retired nursing supervisor at that namesake hospital, passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 31, 2019, at Bassett.

Born June 8, 1925, at Bassett Hospital, Imy was one of seven children of Charles A. Newell, Sr. and Mary Gavin Newell. Imy’s mother was raised by Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett, and it was in her honor that Imy was named. After graduating from Cooperstown Central School with the Class of 1941, Imy attended Hartwick College School of Nursing. Upon graduation she went to work at Bassett

as a nurse.

In 1953, Imy met Rodman Dana Carter, M.D. while he was a Columbia University medical student on a rotation to Bassett. They were married April 18, 1958, in a ceremony in Cromwell, Conn., with Dr. Carter’s father officiating. The couple continued working at Bassett, he as a surgeon and urologist and she as a nurse.

During her tenure there, Imy taught many house officers on the fronts of surgical and emergency care until retiring as nursing supervisor in 1990. When Dr. Carter retired, he and Imy began spending winters in Palm Coast, Fla. Following a battle with cancer, Dr.

Carter passed away Dec. 28, 2018.

Along with her husband, she was an ardent supporter of the Friends of Bassett, and was a former member of the Lake & Valley Garden Club and the Cooperstown Country Club.

Imy is survived by one daughter, Michelle “Micki” Weir of Cooperstown; two granddaughters, Dana Temp and fiancé James Habernig of Esperance and Shawna Tierney and husband, Patrick of Bristol, Maine; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Temp, and Fynnaghan, Liam and Angus Tierney; two sisters, Noreen Newell of Cooperstown, and Marion “Billie” Williams of

Portland, Ore.; one sisterin-law, Caroline Wall of Yarmouth Port, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 60 years, who preceded her in death only 34 days prior to her own, Imy was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie N. Strait, and three brothers, Charles A. Newell, Jr., Donald Newell and Roger Gavin Newell.

A private gathering will be held later this spring.

Leland C. Smith, 96; Retired Bassett Employee COOPERSTOWN – Leland C. Smith, 96, a World War II veteran who spent his career in Bassett Hospital’s business office, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, at Promenade Assisted Living in Chestnut Ridge, Rockland County.

Leland was born on Feb. 5, 1922, in Cooperstown, to Ethel and Charles Smith.

He died less than a week before his 97th birthday.

A Marine, he was a

member of the “Greatest Generation,” serving in the Pacific theater during World War II. Soon after returning from service, he married Genevieve Gandle on Sept. 15, 1945, and they enjoyed a 69-year marriage together, mostly in his native Cooperstown, before moving to Pearl River in 2009 and to assisted living in 2014.

Genevieve pre-deceased Leland in 2015. He was

also pre-deceased by sister Marjorie Simmons and brother Raymond Smith.

As a youth and well into adulthood, Leland was an active and accomplished sportsman, excelling in golf, bowling and in billiards. He loved playing cards and was still winning family “crazy rummy” tournaments up to his final week of life.

He worked at the family creamery for several years after leaving the Marine Corps, and spent the majority of his working life in accounting and finance at Bassett Hospital.

In Cooperstown, he was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the Cooperstown golf and bowling leagues, the Mohican Club and Christ Episcopal Church.

In Pearl River, Leland volunteered with daughter Jeanne to deliver Meals on Wheels while able, and attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, particularly the Men’s Breakfast Group at the church, where he earned a reputation as a steady attendee and reliably

enjoyed the companionship, projects and of course the great food at these monthly gatherings.

Leland is survived by his two daughters, Judy Motz and Jeanne Struck, son-inlaw Richard Struck, grandchildren Julie Montesano and husband Rocco, and Jonathan Moore and wife Dhania, great-grandchildren Gerard Montesano and wife Jillian, Dante Montesano, Daniella Montesano and Zacary Moore. He is also survived by niece Nancy White and husband Richard, brother-in law Robert Simmons, sister-in-law Winifred Smith, and Judy Motz’s companion Bill Burke.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 112 North Main St., Pearl River.
