20 Inches Of Snow On Way This Weekend

A

s much as 20 inches of snow could fall on Otsego County this weekend, according to Accuweather.

The strong snowstorm is predicted to start in the Midwest and sweep up central Pennsylvania and into central New York by Thursday or Friday.

Though snow will start on Friday and continue on Saturday, the majority of the snow will fall on Sunday. Snow is also predicted through the rest of next week.

During her visit, she formed a local committee to advocate for the women’s right to vote.

The second commemorates July 4, 1827, when about 60 blacks gathered in the church, “with music and banners flying,� to celebrate the end of slavery in New York State.

o far, except for 2 1/2 layoffs at the USDA Farm Service Agency, there appears to be no local impacts from the longest U.S. government shutdown in history, now in its fourth week.

Approximately 125 Otsego County residents work for the federal government, but most work for the U.S. Postal DOL’S Harris Service, which is exempt from the shutdown, said Christian Harris, state Labor Department analyst, Southern Tier Region.

The three Farm Service Agency employees – two full-time, one part time – are at the Soil & Water Conservation office, were furloughed, as was Dana Razzano, an FDA food inspector, formerly of Cooperstown, who now works out of Albany. “We’ve only missed one paycheck, so we’re doing okay,� she said. “But if we miss a second one, it could be a problem.�

She spent the first week filing for unemployment and trying to work with her mortgage and credit card companies to get assistance with payments. “I’ve never filed for unemployment before,� she said. “It’s embarrassing. I’m stressed. My co-workers are Please See LAYOFFS, A3

Emancipation, Suffrage-Movement Markers Unveiled On MLK Day when Heitz delivered a lecture on slavery in the county.

When the local historian discovered the Susan B. Anthony citation in the 1990s, he found it “was previously unknown to national scholars.” At Rutgers, scholar at the Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony Papers Project “insisted the account was erroneous.”

Rather, Heitz discovered, since Anthony went on to Albany, Schenectady and Troy, the publicity mentioned the larger venues but ignored Cooperstown and another

stop further west.

When he found the 1827 citation, “it surprised me” since he had seen little reference to slavery in local histories. He later found there were hundreds of slaves in bondage here during the pioneering phase.

Nationally, slaves weren’t freed until the Civil War. But in 1817, Gov. Daniel Tompkins, who was also the sixth vice president of the United States, recommended legislation that would allow slavery to be phased out over 10 years.

Currently, the shutdown has caused more apprehension than anything.

“I’m advising people to get to the airport with plenty of time for delays at TSA checkpoints,” said travel agent Joan Badgley, Leatherstocking Trails. “If you’re flying domestically out of Albany, two and a half hours should be plenty.”

She hasn’t had any cancellations, but she tells her clients to consider trip insurance, or to pay a little more for a refundable flight in case of issues.

Passports, however, are not being delayed, according to the Oneonta Post Office.

If and when the full effects of the partial government shutdown hit Otsego County yet, Catholic Charities will be ready for them, said Lynn Glueckert, who directs the Oneonta office.

“Throughout the diocese, we’ve made a plan to streamline the process for emergency assistance,” she said. “Most of the time, we would refer someone to social services, but these people may not be eligible, so we want to provide them with emergency assistance.”

That could mean anything from helping with overwhelming utility bills, rent or mortgage payments or accessing the food pantries and meal services. “Typically, these people don’t have to come to social services,” she said. “We want to remove all barriers for them and make sure they know about the resources that are out there.”

In Washington, D.C., the county’s new congressman, Antonio Delgado, D-19th, had a different take: “It’s hitting everybody hard,” he said. “It’s irresponsible and reckless, and we need to do the work to get people back to work.”

Delgado said he has voted for all legislation in the Democratic House of Representative to re-open the government; however, the Republican U.S. Senate has not voted on any of it.

He said that he has received letters and phone calls from constituents sharing their stories.

“One woman said her husband commutes five and half hours to work every day, up at 4 a.m., home at 6 p.m.,” he said. “Their livelihood depends on his check.

People who were already living paycheck to paycheck are feeling the pinch.”

But more than that, Delgado said that the shutdown could affect people who rely on SNAP benefits, Section 8 housing vouchers and the $4.7 billion in farm subsidies..

According to Dan Maskin, Opportunities for Otsego CEO, the SNAP program is funded through February, with the state distributing next month’s benefits early.

“I’m not hearing anything from colleagues or clients that’s immediately alarming,” he said.

If the shutdown continues through February, that may change, he said.

Heitz said the Anthony marker will be placed in front of the chapel, where the suffragette, then only 33, spoke in a barn that had been converted to the church’s sessions’ building.

Also in the spring, when the ground thaws, the emancipation marker will be placed next to an existing marker by the front door that marks Cooperstown’s oldest church.

Andela, Red Shed Show Entrepreneurial Mettle Y ou may have noticed that Dec. 15 piece in the New York Times, “The Hard Truths of Trying to Save the ‘Rural’ Economy.” In it, reporter Eduardo Porter wrote: “I’ve lived most of my life in big cities. I don’t pretend to understand what it’s like to live in a small town or a family farm, or how it feels when all the jobs in a community seem to be fading away.”

You might expect what follows: It sounds like one of those stories Times reporters periodically transmit from

Timbuctoo or some similarly exotic locale. All impressions.

As if rural economic development – the War on Poverty, if you will – is all about feelings.

Here’s a more concrete objection: Porter equates Upstate New York – criss-crossed by four lanes, peppered with international airports, abounding with excellent colleges and universities, a couple of hours from the largest metropolitan economy in the country that also happens to be the center of the financial universe – with Harrison, Neb., wherever that is.

In Governor Cuomo’s Dec. 18 CFA announcements, Otsego County entrepreneurs did just fine.

Only 50 years ago, the Mohawk Valley was the most productive industrial corridor in the world, from Schenectady to Buffalo. Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the segregated South was a deterrent: What a nightmare succumbing to Jim Crow’s heel would have been for companies marketing to a nation of more forward-looking consumers.

That obstacle removed, Empire State companies flocked to the non-union South. The story’s told of the last Mr. Shuttleworth, president of the

company that founded Mohawk Carpet in Amsterdam, being spit upon by a striker while crossing a picket line in the late 1960s.

Within a year, the company’s final Mohawk Valley operations had departed.

New York State never effectively reacted to the historic shift south. Many magnificent towns and cities – not just Amsterdam, but Fort Plain, Rochester, you name it – spun into decades-long decline.

Majority Senate Democrats Begin Shutting Out GOP Voices

Day one of the new Democrat majority in the state Senate began, in many ways, as expected.

A new leader was elected (from just outside New York City) and immediately outlined the policies the Democrats would be pursuing in the coming year.

This is how a change in majority works, and I take no issue with that. However, I was deeply concerned on several fronts.

I have consistently voted for a permanent property tax cap, and

I was pleased to hear the new leader mention that as a priority. The problem was that no other Upstate concerns were detailed, and that is a major STATE SEN. disappointment.

wouldn’t it be wise to begin now to wean the global society off oil, so reserves will remain when they are essential?

Vision of future needs has proven to be obsolete repeatedly through human history, most recently in the last century when horsepowered transportation was deemed a pollutant in cities that had to clean streets of manure in favor of gasolinepowered cars.

To the Editor: Mike Zagata’s column of Jan. 10-11 expresses perspectives that are fast becoming archaic. To suggest renewables aren’t ready to replace gas is short-sighted, parochial and myopic.

Of course, the 5,000 flights a day that circle the earth can’t by powered by green energy, but that’s exactly the point. Conserving them now will insure availability later.

Henceforth, let it be noted in Phinney’s calendar that the 9th day of February, 1855, was the day when the memorable “Woman’s Rights Convention” was held at Cooperstown! – and let the mothers of Otsego, in all coming ages, teach their children to revere its anniversary, as the day when “the strong-minded women” gave the horn of liberty such a rousing blast among the echoing hills of our county.

I have previously outlined New York State’s population loss, and the news is filled with stories about Upstate businesses closing their doors.

We need to focus on policies that will cut taxes, eliminate burdensome government regulations, and lower the cost of doing business across the state. Those are the steps needed to create an environment conducive to job creation.

Which Appliance Should We Be Afraid Of Next?

W

e have long known that, when it comes to many things, we can undoubtedly be classified as a first-class dinosaur.

This is particularly true when it comes to current technology. We will admit to being able to send and receive email. We can also, to a certain extent, manage to look things up on the Internet.

However, we made the decision long ago to abandon Facebook. And we must admit that we are clueless about exactly what is what when it comes to social media. So we decided that perhaps a bit of research on the

subject just might be in order.

We started with a definition of social media which read: “websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to CATHERINE participate in social LAKE networking.” That ELLSWORTH leads us to wonder just what the websites and applications might be.

Further research informed us that there are seven different forms of social media, namely blogging, social network, microblogging, social bookmarketing, video sharing, broader content sharing and forums.

As we read through the examples of each of forms of social media, we have concluded that the only one we seem to use would be YouTube, particularly when we wish to listen to various songs from our youth. We have also been known to look at selected YouTube offerings sent to us via email.

Dr. Paul Z. DuBois, librarian for the New York State Historical Association, spoke to members of the Cooperstown Rotary Club on Tuesday, January 14 at the Hotel Otesaga.

Dr. DuBois discussed the new library building of the Association and the services it offers to students in the Cooperstown Graduate programs, to members of the local community, and to the general public. He pointed out that the new library came about as a result of the expanding educational program of the Association, and because of the crowded conditions that prevailed in the former location of the library in Fenimore House. He noted that each student in the graduate programs is required to write a thesis. The research is carried on in the library and copies of each thesis are deposited there.

Found Dead – A man named John B. Taylor was found dead by the side of the road near Rochester, N.Y. week before last. By his side was found a gallon of whiskey, in his pockets a pound of tobacco, a quarter pound of tea, a pack of cards enveloped in a copy of the Declaration of Independence, one cent, a jack-knife and an empty wallet.

Another – Simeon Raymond, a man of intemperate habits, was found dead in a boat near Norfolk, Connecticut last Sunday. A bottle, his usual companion, was found by his side.

It is supposed that he fell into the position in which he was found, and being intoxicated was unable to recover himself.

A novel master’s of science degree in lake management – the first of its kind in the nation – may be in place at the SUNY Biological Field Station in Cooperstown and at Thayer’s Farm as soon as September 2010. Field Station Director Bill Harman, who began developing the idea two years ago, said it has gone through several levels of SUNY approval and “there’s a very good chance” the program will receive the final OK soon. “There are a lot of people who are out there managing lakes who don’t even call themselves lake managers,” Harman said. “We saw a niche we could fill,” said Harman, who as field station director is also a member of the SUNY Oneonta biology faculty. Under the final plan Harman would be teaching two classes, one in lake management and the other in the management of “aquatic biota.”

Digital Infrastructure Will Allow Us To Compete With Big Tech

he New York Times recently (Dec. 15, 2018) ran a disturbing article entitled “The Hard Truths of Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy.”

The article documents what anyone living in Otsego County knows all too well: the increasing economic and cultural gap between affluent urban centers and poor rural areas like ours.

Rural areas have an ageing, shrinking, under-skilled population, with dwindling prospects for ‘good’ jobs.

According to the Times writer, Eduardo Porter, this is largely because the new, “tech-heavy” economy can flourish only in big cities where a plethora of companies can draw on a larger, better educated population skilled in digital techniques and applications.

the new American urban digital economy has little need for unskilled workers.

“Factory jobs,” Porter tells us, “can no longer keep small-town

Our poverty rate (16.8 percent) is above state and federal levels.

The greatest poverty is found in the City of Oneonta, where 29.5 percent of residents live below the Federal Poverty Level.

The fastest growing age group is 65 and over. School enrollments

are down. Median household income is about $48k, which is $12k below New York State’s median household income. “At the current minimum wage…,” according to the report, it is impossible to “sustain a household without assistance from public programs.”

About a quarter of all employment is in health care and social services; manufacturing comes in at only 5 percent.

Any viable future planning for Otsego County has to start with these findings. Rural counties like ours suffer from three main shortages: they lack workers with digital competences, broadband connections, and capital for investment.

What’s needed to fix this, Porter says, are federal programs to promote technical training and rural investment, especially in broadband. But the policy experts he quotes are wary. “Better to focus

on middle-sized places that are near big tech hubs and have some critical infrastructure,” he reports, “rather than scatter assistance all over the landscape.”

For Otsego County, that’s too little too late. It will only exacerbate the difference between technically advanced hubs which already exist (including the nearby Capitol District), and most rural places which will be left further behind.

• The answer is exactly the opposite: we need to install digital infrastructure everywhere, on the model of rural electrification during the New Deal. Only then can rural areas hope to be fully integrated into the larger economy.

The need for a thorough and full digital infrastructure is basic.

Beyond that, we need to build on our assets: farms and forests and plenty of water, and a countryside of compelling natural beauty.

No question we’re sliding into

eco-crisis along with the rest of the world, but consider that our relative isolation, low population density, and natural and cultural resources increasingly give us a comparative advantage over many other places.

The greener we are, the more attractive we will be, particularly to successful, digitally competent, globalized, entrepreneurial urbanites well-off enough to look to escape the deteriorating quality of city life.

They will bring investment and jobs with them if they come, and help enrich local life and institutions. To get them here, Otsego County needs to Go Green in a serious way.

And regardless, there’s ferment: This year’s CFAs – the state economic development grants that Governor Cuomo announced Dec. 18 in Albany – show no lack of creative entrepreneurism locally: • Andela Products, the Richfield Springs glass recycler, received $950,000 to construct two more buildings and create a 22-acre commerce park.

• Red Shed Brewery got $437,000 to expand its Route 33 operation, allowing it to begin hosting concerts quarterly, and further to create a week-long beer-themed celebration at its hilltop founding site above Middlefield Center.

• Steiner’s Meats in Otego got a relatively modest $30,000, but that

will allow it to serve the growing grass-fed beef sector, stalled due to a lack of USDA-approved meat-processing capacity.

Separately, Oneonta’s Custom Electronics in October received a $750,000 grant to put a futuristic self-renewing battery – better batteries are the foundation of a Renewable Future – into production, part of a $2.2 million undertaking that will create 50 new jobs.

• In the fall, Otsego Now President Jody Zakrevsky enticed a recruiter seeking to place a distribution center to visit the 140-acre Schenevus site. How much gas is available? None, Zakrevsky replied. Well, maybe development could happen in 10 years, once all the other sites are used up. (Although, hallelujah, there’s a possibility a gas line might be extended down from Cobleskill.)

Ideas aplenty. The brake is energy.

Speaking to Oneonta Common

Council’s Community Development Committee on Jan. 10, Delaware Engineering representatives reported, as of now, there is no energy available to any enterprise seeking to located in the former D&H Railyards, which City Hall and Otsego Now have identified as the top priority for development. Not a BTU, nada.

As Delaware’s Mary Beth Bianconi explained in an interview, once an enterprise is recruited, that company must interface with NYSEG, which – after imposing a non-disclosure agreement – will tell the executives how much gas and electricity they will get and what it will cost. She said that’s the same case in pretty much every county in eastern New York.

Given the vehemence of the anti-gas faction in the city, Mayor Gary Herzig was asked if City Hall should be spending any time on the railyards at all.

Herzig replied that it’s easy to be against a theoretical manufac-

turer, but if an attractive development can be devised for Oneonta, there should be more give.

A mix of solar and geothermal, with fossil fuels as a bridge, albeit a temporary one, might be possible, he said, depending on the overall plan.

That remains to be seen. A sense of any flexibility may be gauged at a panel discussion the Concerned Citizens of Oneonta has planned at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 17, at Elm Park United Methodist Church.

And at the Otsego Chamber summit at The Otesaga on the 31st. Chamber President Barbara Ann Heegan said registrations are coming in from across Central New York. Wonder what that’s all about.

Herzig, of course, has it right.

For the time being, the only option – if there is to be any development in a county that has lost 3.5 percent of its population (2,165) since 2010 – is a mixed of solar, geo-

thermal and fossil fuels. (Wind has been ruled out at the railyards, the mayor said).

Confronted by a throng at its last meeting, the Oneonta Town Board was intimidated into casting a premature anti-gas vote. Will other community leaders buckle as well before fully assessing the mood of the whole electorate?

• Let’s push the envelope on renewables, but sensibly accept shortterm inevitabilities. After all, Governor Cuomo, with majorities in both the Senate and Assembly, doesn’t see the state becoming 100-percent renewable in vehicles alone until 2040, a generation from now,. Vehicles are only 14 percent of energy consumption.

Harrison, Neb., who knows?

But there’s too much entrepreneurial ferment in Otsego County, too much of a willingness to address our economic-development and socio-economic challenges, not to keep moving ahead.

SENATOR/From A4 minority conference was guaranteed 30 percent of total staff resources. However, in the new Senate rules, that guarantee was dropped. Again, while a change in leadership may mean a change in political ideology, it should not mean a reduction in state services, and representation, for the people of a particular senate district.

Another major concern with the new Senate rules is the composition of Senate committees, especially the Ethics & Internal Governance Committee. As advanced, the adopted rules would reconstitute the ethics panel to review legislation, but also to allow partisan investigations. Unlike Congress and the state Assembly, this committee will be politically unbalanced, comprised of more Democrats than Republicans.

This unprecedented change is profoundly dangerous to democracy in Albany. Politics should not enter into ethics investigations, but that is exactly what this change may allow.

In addition, Democrats have also sharply reduced the size of

all committees. In some cases, there will be only one minority member on a committee. This is an unprecedented shift that will limit debate during committee meetings, where legislation is first reviewed, and stifle the voices of many.

The new senators who were sworn in on Day One of the legislative session, along with others in the Democrat majority, spent their time on the campaign trail promoting ethics, transparency, and policies to better our ENTIRE state.

If the start of the legislative session is any indication, they have already forgotten those righteous ideals. What, and whom, will they forget next?

Let’s do a fact-check on the viability of solar power. It isn’t necessary to supply an entire city with electricity from solar panels to see the virtues of that energy source. Solar panels spread across miles of desert terrain in the Southwest serve needs that would otherwise consume fossil fuels, and they don’t contaminate our environment.

The need of a modern global society for hydrocarbons is conspicuous. It got that way for good reasons. For decades, oil was available and the oil industry convinced us there were no alternatives. Do you need an example? Just ask what happened to the electriccar industry of the ’50s and the power of the oil industry will be conspicuous.

Fundamental to this issue is the inability of Americans to see beyond their own individual needs. That has a time component that leads to shortsighted thinking in many ways. For example, more than 50 percent of Americans think

climate change is a problem, and almost as many attribute the problem to human activity.

But because the ramification of a warming climate (and the list is long) will not affect them directly in their lifetime, the problem is left for future generations to solve. That’s right – just sweep it under the rug for someone else to deal with.

One hundred years ago we learned from John Muir that everything in the human environment is connected – you can’t touch anything in the living environment without ultimately touching everything.

The scope of time and space clearly eludes many who think issues aren’t important if they don’t have a direct influence on them, as clearly illustrated by Mr. Zagata’s column.

The development of renewables may not be the answer now at this time, but it sure is a step in the right direction for the future. You can cover a lot of ground one step at a time.

Thermostats, Refrigerators, Cars, Recipes, What Next?

COLUMN/From A4 use of YouTube, we think we shall continue to avoid everything else. Of course, from what we read in a recent AP article, “Home items are getting smarter and creepier,” there will be much more in terms of new technology on the horizon, all of which we suspect we will do our best to avoid.

Evidently, according to the article, “Internet-connected ‘smarts’ are creeping into cars, refrigerators, thermostats and just about everything else in your home.” It quite makes us wonder if our many books will continue to be technologically free. Included in the article was information about “…an oven that coordinates your recipes and a toilet that flushes with a voice command.”

• We are quite certain that we would have no use whatsoever for the oven. All of recipes are safely tucked away in either cookbooks or on plain oldfashioned paper, some of which date back to our late husband’s grandmother.

And as long as they stay where they are in the kitchen cupboard we think no stove will be able to access them anytime soon.

As for the toilet, the article points out that: “...Kohler’s Numi will respond to voice commands to raise or lower the lid – or to flush. You can do it from an app, too. The company says it’s all about offering hands-free options in a setting that’s very personal for people.

The toilet is also heated and can play music and the news through its speakers.”

And while the heated feature

might at times be rather nice, we cannot imagine having a toilet that would play music as well as report the news. We must say the need for such a toilet quite escapes us.

In fact, we almost think that if our choice was between this particular toilet and an outhouse, we would be inclined to go with the outhouse. And we suspect that anyone trying to drag us into all of this new technology will find us screaming and kicking every inch of the way.

• Having said that, we must admit that there is one piece of new technology making its way into the Cooperstown scene which we will most heartily endorse, namely AllOTSEGO. com’s new Otsego County’s Daily Newspaper/ONLINE. It seems it will offer a full coverage of local as well as national and world news.

Plus, it will feature such things as a crossword puzzle, Dear Abby and comics. But, from our perspective, more important it will include all material which appears in both The Freeman’s Journal and Hometown Oneonta. It will be possible to once again read what we write online. Thus, we must most certainly recommend everyone check out Otsego County’s newest daily newspaper offering.

Another longtime volunteer, Jason Ogden, a retired New York City police officer and a first responder on 9/11 was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer) in April 2017, had his left kidney removed. But the cancer spread to his lungs, liver and spine, and he is currently going through chemo and radiation treatments.

Freeland and Ogden are two of 15 recipients of this year’s annual Goodyear Lake jump, where hundreds of swimmers brave the frigid waters to raise money for community members, mostly children, fighting debilitating illnesses.

Last year, 250 jumpers raised $128,600, a record.

Since the first jump in 1996, more than a million dollars total has been raised to benefit more than 100 recipients.

Also benefitting Freeland this year is Michael Lorens, 9, who was born with severe cerebral palsy. In 2017, much of his medical equipment was destroyed in a house fire, leaving him unable to get much of the therapy he needs.

“We are hoping to be back in our rebuilt home by the spring of 2019 and restore Michael’s life and ours back to normal,” his mother wrote in his biography on the jump’s website.

Brittany Parrett, 30, a former bodybuilder, is also a beneficiary

after a yet-undiagnosed illness left her unable to walk. She was the focus of a Spectrum News story last November, and because doctors are unable to Ogden diagnose her, her insurance will not cover physical therapy or treatments.

Kim Burkhart’s Milford Central School third-graders are raising 50 brown trout in their classroom, learning hands-on about the ecosystems of rivers and streams.

“They’re inspired when they participate in this life cycle instead of just reading it in books,” she said. “It sticks with them.”

A state certified Master Teacher, Burkhart first did the trout program with students when she taught first grade at Sherburne. “Some of them, now in fourth and fifth grade, still write to me about it,” she said.

“Last November, we had a request from Kim to start a Trout in the Classroom program,” said Oneonta’s Tom Trelease, president of the Trout Unlimited local chapter. “We had limited funds, so we got a local foundation to buy all the equipment.”

At the outset, emergency personnel worked near home, calls were mostly local, and anyone called out could expect to be back at work in an hour, the couple said.

Now, the trip from southern Delaware County to Bassett in Cooperstown and back can take hours, so ambulances are getting harder to staff. Employers are less willing to cooperate.

This affects fire departments, too. “We are very often called to do standby so local volunteers can fight fire,” Margaret said.

As recently as Dec. 29, for instance, CMT had two ambulances at Oneonta’s fatal Walling Avenue fire, transporting the four nephews and fiancé of John Heller, who died rescuing them, to Fox Hospital for treatment.

As CMT passes into new hands – the sale is expected to be complete in March – these developments make it harder for fire companies to staff their emergency squads, and professional squads increasingly important.

“Emergency medicine has evolved to have much greater expectations of what you can do in an ambulance,” said Margaret. “You just can’t dump people off at the local hospital.”

“It’s really high-end medicine,” added Mark, who stayed up on advances as state EMS Council president and a founder of UNYAN, the United New York Ambulance Network. “You can’t NOT know because it’s the standard of care.”

The days of the $900 ambulance are over, too. Mark reports the most CMT paid for ambulances over the years was for two Mercedes Benz models – $90,000 each.

And the kids helped make it a home for their fishy friends. “We researched trout habitats and made a background” for the fish tank, said pupil Liam Gannon.

The students also practiced their persuasive writing skills in letters to the trout, encouraging them to hatch and come live in their classroom.

“First, the tank has a thermometer,” Kenson McWaters wrote enticingly.

“Next, we will not let sharks in.”

But by the time they were able to purchase and set up the tank, hatching season was already over. “A teacher in Stamford has been doing this for 17 years, and she had 200 trout,” Trelease said. “She gave Kim’s class 50.”

also has to make sure the fish get their snacks too. “We feed them special trout food,” said Natalie Roe. “The kids come in every morning and look at them,” said Burkhart.

Their observations can quickly turn into lessons. “They love to hide in the rocks, and the students thought they were dead or stuck,” she said. “But we learned that in the wild, that’s how they would hide from predators.”

In addition to the science lessons about the fish and their habitats, the students are also going to learn how

to tie flies and about the importance of conservation.

“Seeing fish from start to release helps students better understand the life and health of a stream,” said Trout Unlimited member Kevin Kelly, also of Oneonta.

“It gives them an appreciation of how important our streams are,” said Trelease. “Our goal is to promote fishing to young kids.”

“This is another way to get kids outside,” said Burkhart. “They can go fishing or look around in the creek instead of

playing video games.”

While this is the first Trout Unlimited-sponsored program in an Otsego County school, the chapter also provided guidance for a “Trout in the Classroom” project fifth-grade teacher Suzanne Johnson is running at Riverside Elementary School in Oneonta.

In the spring, the students will take a field trip to a DEC-approved stream to release the fish. “In Sherburne, every student got to let a fish go,” Burkhart said. “We think we have enough for every student here to do that too.”

Sandee H. Alpern, 71, Cooperstown; Spinner, Weaver, Potter, Teacher COOPERSTOWN – Sandee Hillman Alpern, 71, a spinner, weaver and potter, as well as Cooperstown Elementary teacher, passed away this morning, Jan. 10, 2019, at Chestnut Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Oneonta. She had lived in Cooperstown since 1976.

Sandee was born in New York City on June 24, 1947, and grew up in Great Neck,

Long Island. She attended Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass., where she earned her bachelor of arts degree, then earned her master’s in educational psychology at the University of Chicago. She was married to Harlan Alpern in Roslyn on June 20, 1971.

After her marriage she moved to Rochester with her husband, who was a resident in pathology at

the University of Rochester Medical Center. She worked as a play therapist on inpatient pediatrics. She also took classes in spinning and weaving, becoming proficient and had her own spinning wheel and loom.

In 1976 she moved to Cooperstown with her husband, who was an attending pathologist at the Bassett Hospital. Sandee took a part-time position at the Cooperstown Elementary School as the teacher of the gifted and talented program.

She continued to do spinning and weaving.

In addition, she took classes in pottery at The Smithy in Cooperstown. She had her own pottery wheel and kiln in the basement of her home. She developed expertise in pottery, sold her pieces and became a teacher of pottery at The Smithy, teaching two classes weekly and had a following of students. She sold her pottery as well as her weaving products at local stores and craft shows. She loved to collect and wear craft jewelry.

Sandee is survived by her husband, Harlan; her son, Micah (Sarah) of Moun-

tain View, Calif.; by her daughter, Rebeka Seelinger (Brian) of Erie, Pa.; her four grandchildren, Bobby, Emma, Hazel and James; as well as by her mother, Corinne S. Hillman of Cooperstown, and a sister, Kathi Hillman McElroy (Hugh) of Port Jefferson.

Sandee had many friends in the Cooperstown area as well as friends and relatives across the country who will miss her.

The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82

Chestnut St., Cooperstown, with Rabbi Peter Schaktman of Temple Emanu-El in Utica officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, Queens.

PITTSFIELD – Edward John Van Beers, 84, who for years operated Pittsfield Plumbing & Heating, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 11, 2019.

Edward was born on March 5, 1934 in Paterson, N.J., a son of the late Charles Vincent Sepione and Kathryn Viedas.

Edward was an avid coin and stamp collector. He enjoyed tending his vegetable gardens, walking his land, watching a Yankees’ game, a good game of horseshoes, and reading anything non-

fiction. Most notably; he was a jack of all trades and loved to work.

Right up until recent times, he still had plans for building projects and improvements around his home.

At Pittsfield Plumbing, he provided area homeowners with supplies and well-appreciated guidance.

He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Esther Whittaker; children, Edward (Lauren) Van Beers II, Kathe (Jim Goldie) Rutler, Sharon (Scott) Wilson and John Mitchell; seven grand-

children; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter (Connie) Van Beers and Bill Van Beers.

Calling hours are 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Johnston Funeral Home, 60 Broad Street, Morris. A graveside service will take

place in the spring.

Donations in memory of Edward may be made to the Pittsfield Fire Department, 167 State Highway 80, New Berlin, New York 13411.
