Inspired by the Leatherstocking Brush and Palette Club’s ‘Cooperstown Arts & Crafts Show’, a Labor Day weekend tradition in the Village for approximately 50 years, the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce answered calls to revive the craft fair in 2017.
“In its new incarnation, the ‘Cooperstown Artisan Festival’ celebrates the flourishing creative spirit of our region today, and provides a venue for over fifty select regional artists and craftspeople offering a vast range of unique handmade goods to the public,” said Tara Burke, Executive Director of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce.Livemusic, food trucks, artist demonstrations, and activities for children round out the event making it a fun outing for the whole family.
Because of COVID, the Cooperstown Artisan Festival was cancelled in 2020.
The Artisan Festival is the ideal place to find unique gifts, including skincare products, clothing and accessories, jewelry, housewares, home décor, and specialty foods.
“The event is amazing because it brings together local makers with an audience that appreciates the opportu nity to purchase items crafted with care. And it makes Labor Day weekend a perfect time to visit Cooperstown when there’s so much to explore throughout the Village,
The venue is perfect for an artisan festival. “It’s outdoors on the lawn of the Otsego County Campus on upper Main Street in Cooperstown in front of the courthouse,” she said. “It’s open to the public, entry is free to all, and the event will go on rain or shine.”
“It’s a two-day festival and will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4,” Ms. Burke said.
“We’ve been consistently impressed with the quality of craftmanship displayed by the vendors, as well as the enormous variety of media. You will find artisans working with wood, clay, metal, fibers, paper, resin, wax, glass, and ‘found’ objects, as well as painting, drawing, and photography,” Ms. Burke said.

After five years, the Cooperstown Chamber feels certain that the Artisan Festival tradition will continue to thrive well into the future.

Imagine the perfect place in Cooperstown on Lake Otsego, the serenity of which is arguably the best around, and you will find yourself at the Fenimore Art Museum Café. The day we were there was a sunny, breezy day. I chose the Chicken Curry Sandwich. I’m not a huge fan of curry, but I was in the mood for something different. It was served on Heidelberg bread with chicken curry, lettuce, cran berries and tomato. I also had their broccoli cheddar soup, some of the best I’ve everMyhad.friend had the Chicken Thai Noodle Bowl, she loved it. It had chicken, noodles, roasted red peppers, carrots, pickles, peanuts and Thai peanut ginger sauce. Delicious! You’llfind the café in the back of the museum, of course you have to go through the wonderful gift shop to get there! (Psst— you don’t have to pay admission to the museum if you only want to dine there, although I’d suggest taking in the wonderful exhibits they have ongoing and for this summer). It is quite possibly the most relaxing place to grab a bite on the lake. The menu isn’t huge, but it’s tasty and has some thing for everyone!

The –FreezeBrainShoppeIceCream
The other day I took a walk downtown. It was a hot day and I thought to myself ‘I could use an ice cream.’ Conveniently, a recent addition to Main Street, Cooperstown is the Brain Freeze Ice Cream Shop right near the intersec tion of Pioneer and Main. There were many tempting flavors but I ordered a scoop of the Bittersweet Sinphony and the Cookies & Cream for myself. Then for good measure topped it with some M&M®s.ThenI took a walk down to the lake front park to take in the lake and enjoy the buffer strip garden that the Lake and Valley Garden Club planted and has main tained since 2005. The ice cream was, as always delicious. The Cookies & Cream was, as expected full of Oreo® cookies that slowly became softer as the ice cream melted in the heat and the M&M®s were a good bit of added crunchiness (and choc olatiness) before I reached the scoop of Bittersweet Sinphony.TheBittersweet Sinphony is coffee ice cream with chunks of dark chocolate fudge mixed in and it was a delicious finisher. Definitely worth a touch of brain freeze on a hot afternoon.
