Artisans and other festivals fall into autumn Events such as Fall Fling, Arts on the Lawn will showcase Otsego County’s shoulder season

By KEVIN LIMITI The summer is winding down and with the change in season comes colored foliage, Labor Day, Halloween and fall hikes up the scenic mountains in the Catskills and Adirondacks.

The taste of apple cider, the increasingly crisper days and the feeling of waking up in autumn with a hot cup of coffee is something anybody can look forward to, especially now with all sorts of activities vying for the attention of Otsego County locals and visitors alike.

One of these events is the Cooperstown Artisan Festival put on by the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce. It will be at the Otsego County courthouse at 197 Main St. in Cooperstown during Labor Day weekend, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 5.

Like most events, last year’s artisan festival was cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Tara Burke, executive director of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, said she is happy to stage the event in 2021.

“We’re excited about our vendor lineup this year,” Burke said, who

mentioned more than 50 vendors would be coming including the Adirondack Balsam, Bill’s Woodworking, Daisy Hollow Farm, Happy Dogs Ceramics, Viking Woodworks, Weathertop Farm and more.

Burke said the festival gives vendors “a chance to showcase their work because it’s beautiful.

“We get a number of local artists and regional artists,” Burke said.

“We’re excited to have them.”

In addition to the artists and vendors, there will be live music and onsite food, including The Green Cow, and food trucks with treats, such as coffee bombs.

“This show’s been around for a long time,” Burke said. The Artistans Festival used to be called the Cooperstown Arts and Crafts Show, which had been an annual tradition since the early 1900s. However, they changed the name to the Artisans Festival, and this is the fourth year the Chamber of Commerce has been running it.

“This is our event. It’s all us,” Burke said, and she said she expects a big turnout this year. “Labor Day weekend is really busy,” Burke said.

Burke said she encourages people to go to and from both events.

Fine Arts on the Lawn is a two-day festival, which includes front lawn exhibitions by local and regional artists. There is a $10 fee to set up original art on the front porch of the Cooperstown Arts Association and a $110 fee to set up original works on the lawn, which are 10' x 10' spaces for tents. There will be music and artist demos, admission is free.

Other events include The Farmers’ Museum’s twin festivals, the Harvest Festival and Tractor Fest, which have been running for 43 and nine years, respectively.

The Harvest Festival will take place Saturday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tractor Fest, which is intended to teach people about tractors and how farming technology has grown and changed throughout the years, will run 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10.

The Farmer’s Museum will also be sponsoring “Things That Go Bump in the Night” ghost tours, which will run Thursdays and Fridays, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Oct. 15, to Oct. 30. The ghost tour is inspired by the classic collection of folk tales written by Louis C. Jones and is recommended for ages 10 and up.

In that same vein, there will be an off-off-Broadway production of the Haunting of Hill House, an adaption of the Shirley Jackson novel Friday, Oct. 1 to Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the Foothills Performing Arts Center.

It’s a cute little café that offers breakfast and lunch, including traditional omelets and salads. I grabbed their Cobb Salad with eggs, bacon and a tasty honey mustard sauce. I particularly enjoyed mixing the flavor of the greens with the warm savory bacon and the refreshing hardboiled eggs. It’s a worthwhile stop if you are just passing through or getting supplies from the grocery store right next door.

Not just a couple of items, but a full menu of apps, burgers and sandwiches, salads and barbecue. They now have beer and wine, too.

The “Food Shack Menu” is hard to choose from. We started with the chips and homemade salsa; they make it every day and it’s so fresh.

Then I had the 1/3 lb. cheeseburger (with Havarti cheese), lettuce, tomato and onion.

I had heard about their cheeseburgers and it exceeded its reputation!

My husband got the pulled pork platter, a traditional charcoal-smoked barbecue that was delicious. He had the homemade mac ’n cheese as a side, it was so rich and

cheesy. They even make homemade cornbread. Top it all off with their fabulous ice cream and you’ll be ready for a nap!

There is a large bar in the center, booths around the sides, six TVs, and some classic rock music playing just loud enough that you can hear it and still have a conversation.

Cooley’s offers a typical pub menu with burgers, sandwiches, and wings. Husband and I were both quite satisfied with our dinners, and especially happy with the speedy and pleasant service.

He had the Jersey Burger which came with American cheese, Taylor Ham, fried egg, and fries.

I had Cooley’s Cuban, a grilled sandwich on ciabatta bread with pulled pork, smoked ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and honey mustard.

Mine came with the homemade potato chips, which were even better than the French fries, in my humble opinion.

Even though I had to come back into work afterward, I had a perfect pint of Guinness to wash down the Cuban.

THE DOG CHARMER

Owner worries because rescue dog does not play

Hi Tom, I recently adopted a rescue dog who is very well behaved, affectionate, listens and responds well and has learned a few new tricks, but has two issues: she does not know how to play, and she wants to be outdoors all the time. If you try to play ball she will watch the ball go past her but not chase it. She doesn’t seem to know how to play with any toys. She never picks up a stick, never carries anything in her mouth, and won’t play tug or squeak her toys, although she uses one stuffed animal as a pillow in her bed.

At the dog park she loves to run with the other dogs but has no interest in retrieving whatever they are chasing. She loves to be outdoors but when she is inside she just lies on her bed looking sad or nudges us to go out for another walk.

How can I help her have more fun?

Ellen Dear Ellen, Affectionate, well behaved, with no accidents ain’t bad when I consider that half of my 800 appointments a year were for real “problem” dogs. But I get where you’re coming from, Ellen. You’re obviously a dog lover and sensitive to your dog’s lack of enthusiasm for play in life.

She seems depressed and it’s depressing you.

Assuming that it’s not something medical, it seems clear that her perhaps deprived upbringing did not include any of the usual play antics of most dogs.

You haven’t said how long you’ve actually had him because I’ve seen adopted dogs take more than two months until they became comfortable and trusting enough to relax and “come out” and start being themselves with play. My own poodle, Paula Jean, hardly wagged her tail for two months after I adopted her at age two.

So forget about the stick and the ball and try this. Let her know you have a treat size piece of meat in your hand and tell her to sit and stay. If necessary have someone hold her on a leash as you back up, acting a little silly to keep her attention.

Then, with her seeing you do it, bend down and place the meat behind a chair leg, or whatever. Then go back to her and with great enthusiasm tell her “Go Find!” as you release her.

If necessary, take her there on the leash, but don’t show her where it is, let her find it. She will.

With success building on success you’ll be able to tell her to stay, step into a nearby room, hide the little piece of meat, come back and tell her, “Go Find!” She’ll love the game.

I trained two of my dogs to find missing people, and when my kids were young and had friends over that was their favorite game. Hide and seek with the kids hiding and the dog seeking.

Ellen, very important, success building on success, with her finding the meat treat before she loses interest because it’s taking too long to find. Good luck and thank you for being an adopter.
