hen, family owned for over 40 years, there’s the OTHER Sal’s Pizzeria – in Oneonta.

It’s one of the first names that locals will rattle off when asked where to get pizza in the City of the Hills, and for good reason. When it comes to their pizza, they seem to operate on the “Let’s put our favorite meal on a slice” mentality. And you know, it works! Just look at some of these offerings that their customers have loved over the years: honey BBQ, Philly cheesesteak, baked ziti, chicken bacon ranch, loaded French fries, brussels sprouts and bacon, meat lovers, grilled chicken parm or “the rodeo” (made with cheesesteak, onion rings and BBQ sauce).

ith an abundance of pizzerias in Oneonta, it can sometimes be difficult figuring out which pizza is the best, or even what sets one slice apart from another.

But Tino’s Pizza has found a way to stand out among the sea of pizza shops, adding one unique topping to their pizzas to help them stand out from the crowd: cold cheese. It’s very simple, order whatever slice of pizza you desire from their wide array of specialty pizzas, then simply ask for cold cheese on top. The pizza, served hot, is loaded up with a mountain of freshly shredded mozzarella cheese to complement the already delicious slice. It might seem like an odd practice, but the pizza shop has been topping their slices with cold cheese for years. Oneonta’s Hometown Fourth Of July Offers Alternative FOURTH/From Pg. 5 Miller. “We’ve gotten quite a reputation.”

This year’s theme is “It’s a Grand Old Flag,” so expect plenty of floats draped in the colors of Old Glory.

“People even get dressed up,” said Andrea House, a longtime member of the Fourth of July committee.

“It’s going to be a super-flag parade.”

But Springfield isn’t the only parade town in the county. Oneonta will hold its annual parade at noon on the Fourth, followed by the annual Hometown Fourth of July celebration in Neahwa Park, featuring food, music, vendors, games and fireworks at dusk.

holiday,” said Carol Mandigo, who organizes the event with First Night. “There’s a lot going on in the world that isn’t nice, so we have to celebrate that we are in a free country.”

Though the Fourth of July parade has always been part of downtown Oneonta, First Night took over the event in 2011 and enhanced the park offerings, bringing in vendors and inviting visitors to make a day of it.

“We try to make it better every year,” said Mandigo.

“We want to create a real event.”

And returning this year for the parade are the World War II era tanks. “They were such a hit last year that David Hayes and police chief Doug Brenner got them

back,” said Mandigo.

But before the parade, you can show your colors – literally – with the 5k Color Run, where stations along the course splatter racers with colored powders, starting at 9 a.m. in Neahwa Park.

The Oneonta Outlaws will play a free baseball game, and you can join in the music-making with a bluegrass jam. The event is familyfriendly and alcohol free.

Miller credits the parade’s

popularity with the oldtimey nature of it. “It reminds people of the parades they went to when they were kids,” said House. “There’s Brooks barbeque, a quilt show, strawberry shortcake and a pie sale.”

And, of course, it wouldn’t be the Fourth of July without fireworks over Otsego Lake. “Our fireworks top everyone else’s,” said Miller. “And that’s just what people tell me every year.”
