Thursday-Friday, June 21-22, 2018
From Mel’s Personality, To All-American Jay’s, To Enchiladas Editor’s Note: Here are Summer Dreams’ staff picks of fun and fine places to eat while you’re in town.
F
inally … a terrific restaurant that is here to stay occupies the corner of Main and Chestnut streets in Cooperstown – Mel’s at 22! You’ve got to try it again and again and again! Owner and head chef Brian Wrubelski makes you feel special when you go there, whether it’s your first time or 100th time. For lunch, being a southerner, my favorite burger there is called Southern Inspired; it has cheese, pulled pork, cole slaw, pickled onions and a fried egg – all on top of the hamburger! All of the paninis and burgers come with fries too, not as an additional side order. The Cobb Salad is so good, it’s adorned with avocado, grilled chicken, bacon, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggs and blue cheese. Split it with someone before lunch! Dinner is a hard choice. My favorite is the Lobster Risotto, it’s so creamy with lobster and fresh sea scallops. And you don’t have to wait for Fridays to have one of the best fish fries in town---Brian’s Original Fried Haddock dinner is a
regular on the menu and it melts in your mouth. Mel’s gets its seafood fresh daily from all over the world, which reminds me to make sure to tell you to try the Tequila Scallops, pan-seared in a light tequila lime butter sauce. Mel’s has a nice kid’s menu too. FINE DINING, Check it FUN DINING all out and make sure Staff Picks to go there hungry! (Mel’s at 22, 22 Chestnut St. Cooperstown. (607) 4357062) TARA BARNWELL General Manager • ou have to go looking for it, but like all good treasures, Jay’s Place is worth the search. Tucked in the corner of Oneonta’s West End, this hidden gem has a lot of oldschool charm, from the cozy banquettes to the cool, dark barroom. Steaks, chops and creative seafood make up most of the menu, with a selection of burgers and sandwiches as well, and a variety of nightly specials, including a Friday and Saturday Prime Rib special so tender, you could cut it with a spoon. But if you’re there any other night of the week, try the Grilled Filet Mignon tips, smothered with

Rather, they keep people coming back with the most important aspect of any restaurant: good food. Serving home cooked American cuisine, there is something for everyone at The Cooperstown Diner, including their delicious triple-decker Turkey Club. Delicious cuts of turkey breast, blanketed by layers of iceberg lettuce, fresh cut tomato, savory bacon strips, and just the right amount of mayonnaise make this a can’t-miss. Fireside Fridays Ommegang Novelty MORE/From Pg. 5 wood, said Neil, you could still smell the hops. “It wasn’t exposed to the elements, so all we had to do was sand it lightly,” he said. “It’s a source of our history.” A new bar was built in Kansas City, Mo., “It looks like a 100-year-old bar,” said Neil. “We’re in a digital age, but we have old-school roots.” New this year on tap are a popular Pale Sour, the Double Barrel Dubble, Neon Rainbows and a Saison Rose. “The Pale Ale has been really popular,” said Capozza. The menu has also been updated, with a new houseroasted roast beef sandwich,
salads, gluten-free and vegan options alongside classic favorites like chicken and waffles, and bratwurst. And, of course, frites. “Beer and frites,” said Neil. “What more do you need?” The tasting room has been renovated, with six beers on tap every day and tastings on the half hour. The room is divided into two sections: the tasting room and a separate dining area that can be used for receptions or private parties. “We’re getting out of the wedding business,” said Neil. “But we’re still popular for rehearsal dinners, so we can close this off from the dining room and the tasting area for private events.”
On a warm day, you can enjoy a drink on the patio underneath a pavilion built by Unalam in Sidney. “We moved the old tasting bar outside,” said Neil. “And a lot of the tables are the old farm tables from the original café.” It’s the perfect place to enjoy the brewery’s Fireside Fridays, which invite bands to play by a bonfire in front of the pavilion. “It’s the perfect marriage, beer and music,” said Neil. “We have concerts for 100 or concerts for 9,000. That’s never going to end.” Their concert series is in full swing; Jack White sold out on Sunday, May 27, and tickets are still available for folk rocker Ray LaMon-
