Investigators Suspect Girl, 11, Murdered

tate Police say they are investigating the death of an 11-yearold Morris girl Sunday, July 30, in Norwich as a possible murder.

Jacelyn D. O’Connor was found dead after state police responded to a report that a girl had suffered a heart attack at a home at 961 County Route 33, Town of Norwich.

Get Used To It. It’s Unlikely Security Measures Will Lessen – In World, Nation, Or Cooperstown

Sounds like a scene from “Apocalypse Now.” But the view below is not the Mekong Delta, with the smell of napalm in the morning, but verdant and serene Otsego County.

What’s going on, nobody in the general public is exactly sure, but it’s all part of the growing security apparatus surrounding the annual National Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Weekend.

Just a few years ago, a security guard or two posted along the low stone wall on outer Lake Street was found sufficient to prevent autograph-seekers from hopping the fence onto Leatherstocking Golf Course fairways. This year, there must have been a dozen state troopers filling that role.

– on rooftops around the flagpole, some in fatigues – are scrutinizing fans now securely hemmed along the sidewalks by heavy metal barricades.

Dogs in front of the Hall? For drugs or explosives? Police cruisers everywhere, this year with strobe lights constantly flashing. Check points aplenty before access is granted. This year, press cards included the bearer’s mug

shot for the first time. And that tank behind the stone fence across from the Induction ceremony, wow!

A particularly chilling innovation: As the Parade of Legends was about to begin, a heavy dump truck lumbered down Leatherstocking Street to block Chestnut at Fowler Way, this coming just a month after a terrorist-driven car careened onto a sidewalk near London Bridge on June 18, killing one pedestrian and hospitalizing a dozen others.

Not going to happen here.

• If this sounds critical, it’s not meant to be. It’s simply a description of a new reality that, 363 days a year, doesn’t touch us here in Shangri La. For two days, or maybe three, the Otsego County seat is the focus of national attention, as a televised celebration of the America’s Buzkashi and a recognition of the game’s greatest heroes roll out.

When You Need One, Is There Always A Doctor In The House?

To the Editor: We hopped in the car to drive 20 minutes to Cooperstown to the hospital. We had both been bitten by ticks. My bite seemed to have gone away, but she had big red splotches.

When we got to the hospital they said she could not see a doctor. “You have to call your prime care and get an appointment…”

Last time I tried to make an appointment for myself with my doctor, I was told I would have to wait for over two months! If you know anything about Lyme Disease you know treatment sooner, rather than later, is better.

She did not want to go to the emergency room, which was another option.

The emergency room is

incredibly expensive and it was not a life-threatening situation that demanded immediate attention. So we got back in the car drove half an hour back down the road to Oneonta, to the clinic at Fox. Can you believe all those fancy buildings, all of those fancy machines, all the space they take up and yet a doctor is not available when you need one? What is the purpose of medicine anyway? We are in real trouble when the medical profession spends millions of dollars on buildings and equipment but there’s no doctor available when you need one. What do they think the medical profession is all about ?

an unforgettable World Series with our nation’s leader, the President of the United States, standing proudly and courageously on the mound in Yankee Stadium.

The World Series was a great American spectacle that had as much positive sociological influence as anything I’ve seen in my lifetime. Baseball in its small way helped this country heal. 2001 was a reaffirmation that baseball was a social institution with social responsibility.

• The social responsibility is why we now honor Jackie Robinson every April 15, why we retired his jersey No. 42 in perpetuity.

he SRO-plus turnout and praiseful Q&A in the Hall of Fame’s Grandstand Theater in January 2016 when Jane Forbes Clark agreed to give a Sunday afternoon talk for the Friends of the Library were testimony to the community’s affection to Cooperstown’s benefactress.

So it was expected that last week’s list of her astonishing accomplishments over the past quartercentury would prompt people to call with accomplishments missed. Here are three: • The Thanksgiving Home, which – after it burned in 2002 – she rebuilt to the original scale, only with modern materials and in accordance with contemporary building codes. The Clark family continues to support the exceptional residence for the elderly.

• The state police K9-training facility on Chicken Hill Farm Road, hosted and supported on Clark property. The graduates contribute to the safety and security of not just 1,800-person Cooperstown, or 61,000-citizen Otsego County, but of all 20 million New Yorkers. This is Jane Clark’s doing.

• The SUNY Biological Field Station – the Clark family provided the original land on Otsego Lake and around Moe Pond, and, during Miss Clark’s tenure, the Clark Foundation continues to support Glimmerglass-focused undertakings outside the strictures of the university system’s budget.

Moung Kyan, a native of Burmah, who accompanied the Rev. Thos. Allen, a returned missionary from Burmah, to this country, will deliver a Free Lecture on the “Habits, Customs and Religion of His Native Land,” at the Presbyterian Church in Oneonta, on Monday evening, August 12 at 8 o’clock. Moung Kyan will be dressed in his native costume, such as he was accustomed to wear in Burmah.

He will exhibit an image of Gaudama, the God whom he was accustomed to worship in his childhood. He will illustrate his lecture by many curiosities, among which are the Sounding Brass and Tinkling Cymbals, and a bean pod three feet long! He will sing in Burmese and repeat a prayer that he was taught to repeat before his heathen god. Moung Kyan is now a student in Madison University preparing to go back as a missionary to his benighted countrymen.

A considerable increase in employment by the Delaware & Hudson R.R. in Oneonta appears in the offing with the unveiling of plans by D&H management to restore the local yards and shops to their former status as a major switching and car repair center. An outline of the plans for Oneonta were passed along to city officials by William J. Ruby, D&H senior vice president in charge of operations, and by Howard W. Hontz, Jr., the line’s general superintendent. These two gentlemen held a mid-day meeting with Mayor James F. Lettis and city’s D&H liaison Supervisor James Catella. Plans include upgrading all the tracks in the Oneonta yard to make it a “production” yard. This, Catella explained, means that Oneonta, which has gone downhill in recent years, would be restored to the status it held years ago when it was one of the largest switching and marshaling points east of Chicago. This news was preceded by the unexpected resignation of D&H President Carl Sterzing whose leadership has been credited with keeping the D&H solvent as numerous other lines have been forced into bankruptcy.

The women of Central New York, like their sisters throughout the United States, have an especial interest in the approaching World’s Columbian Exposition at Chicago. The creation of a board of women managers was authorized by Congress, to take charge of the participation of their sex in the Fair and to give an adequate idea of the extent and value of what has been done by women in the arts, sciences and industries. Two women managers have been appointed from New York’s Sixth Judicial District, embracing the counties of Otsego, Delaware, Madison, Chenango, Broome, Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins, Cortland and Schuyler. In fine arts the women are likely to have a prominent place at Chicago – wall paper, carpet and portiere designing, decorated china, wood carving, embroidery, literature, etc., are among the lines in which women are the intended exhibitors. The board has decided that where competitive exhibits are placed, it will not separate the exhibits of women’s work from that of men, for the reason that as women are working side-by-side with men in all the factories of the world, it would be practically impossible, in most cases, to divide the finished result of their combined work; nor would women be satisfied with prizes unless they were awarded without distinction as to sex and as the result of fair competition.

The recent death of Guglielmo Marconi revived for William J. Williams of 4 King Street, Oneonta, memories of days when he worked on the equipment for the first wireless apparatus and thought the “father of radio” a “little crazy.” Mr. Williams was a blacksmith in a shipyard at Hayle Cornwall, England, when his employers contracted for the job of making the wireless equipment for Marconi. The men on the job knew nothing about how the equipment was to be used or for what. They had never seen anything like it

and the telephone company in efforts to restore and maintain service to customers. Men who completed their work at 4 a.m. and were returning home were called back after a telephone pole was broken on Oneida Street in an automobile accident. Telephone service was interrupted for about 200 subscribers. After working around the clock crews were dismissed at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

EDITORIAL: How Do You Ramp Back National Security State? You Don’t EDITORIAL/From A4 year, Cooperstown might be a target for someone trying to prove a point, make a splash, or who knows what.

Yes, we all know: Locals are talking about this. Nervously.

Writing this is uncomfortable. By airing such worries, does it make such an occurrence more likely, even infinitesimally so? Or does it keep the public sensitive to suspicious activity?

There’s an iron logic to intensify scrutiny: If everything that

might be done isn’t done, and something happens because of a single lapse … well, no one wants that to happen on his or her watch.

No one’s told us this, but that means the growing surveillance and security measures surrounding Hall of Fame Induction Weekend are only going to get moreso.

The Department of Homeland Security’s budget has grown from nothing 16 years ago to a proposed $44.1 billion for 2018.

This isn’t just a local dynamic.

Despite all the decrying of loss

of civil liberties – freedom from snooping, if you will – since 911, the National Security State has marched ever onward.

And it will, outside Trump Tower and outside the Hall of Plaques, until international terrorism is quelled and the Mideast is reintegrated into the international mainstream. Certainly, there’s no short-term fix, and certainly not a local one. (Although Mary Ann Whalen’s welcoming posters are the kind of small steps any community can take.)

Or perhaps Induction Weekends, armaments bristling, crowds tightly controlled, wuppa, wuppa, will become so unpleasant people will stop coming. After all, we can watch the action on our iPhones.

Regardless, we can fondly remember the good old days, before autographs became worth something, when fans could wander into the Hawkeye Grill and maybe have a sarsaparilla with Sandy Koufax.

Or to 1939 and many Inductions

that followed on the Hall of Fame steps, where crowds surrounded the stage, and fans from boys to men could sidle close enough to almost touch such immortals as Babe Ruth, or Joe Dimaggio, or Jackie Robinson.

Or to the Doubleday myth, to neighborhood pals batting and pitching and running bases in the cow pasture that is now Doubleday Field, whiling away summer days, their fates and fortunes still undefined.

ELLSWORTH: Regarding Proposed Law, When Do Sandwich Boards Become Just Clutter?

In considering the proposed law, we think it is appropriate to refer to the stated intent of the sign ordinance, which reads in part: “It is the intent of this chapter to authorize signs that: “(c) Minimize distractions and the adverse effects of visual clutter; “(d) Promote the health, safety and general welfare of the Village;” Interestingly enough, a local resident recently took the time to record just what is located on the sidewalk on the south side of Main Street from Cooper Park to the stoplight.

She noted that there are 14 lamp posts, 20 rain gardens with trees, six garbage/recycling containers, 17 benches, three separate chairs, nine planters not including those attached to a

building, seven cafes and/or table-chair combos, 22 do’s, do not’s, FYI signs, three parking machines, three vending machines, two fire hydrants and one Post Office box.

And while many of these things are instrumental to maintaining order within the village, they all add, in one way or another, not only to the congestion on the sidewalk but also to the visual clutter on Main Street.

• The village has allowed sandwich boards in the past. However, that law was eventually repealed.

getting in or out of the car is all that much more difficult.

We can’t help but think that is not the only parking spot on Main Street from which it is difficult to get from a vehicle to the sidewalk.

Plus given the foot traffic on the sidewalk, we often find it difficult to negotiate, with our walker, to our destination. We can’t help but think that adding sandwich boards to the mix will only make it more difficult for those of us with mobility issues.

SECURITY/From A1 to sound alarmist, but someone threw a bomb in a garbage can during the Boston Marathon. It would be negligent to pretend otherwise, and we always want to be on the side of more safety.�

Starting in January, representative of the State Police, village police, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Homeland Security began meeting to discuss security strategies for the event. “We look at current events and make a proactive plan,� said Cooperstown Police Chief Michael Covert. “We have to ramp up security measures because the world is the way it is. It’s a common-sense approach.�

Additional law enforcement personnel were put in place to keep an eye on the players and the crowds. “There were a lot of people walking around the village,� said Katz. “Some of them were in uniform, others weren’t.�

Homeland Security staffed a command post to assist the local agencies.

Beyond more bodies, “enhanced security measures� were put in place this year, said Sheriff Richard J. Devlin

While it’s happening in Oneonta, TEDxOneonta is likely to be a countywide draw. “TED Talks open our minds, hearts and imaginations to subjects and topics we may not have experienced,� said Rev. Elsie Rhodes, pastor of Cooperstown’s First Presbyterian Church and a TED Talks fan. “They’re brief, they’re accessible and they’re engaging.� “It’s the same idea as the TED conference,� said Buttermann. “There will be live speakers and some videos, but I want it to be much more interactive than the conference might be. I want us to all share

ideas.�

The theme of the event is “Tipping Point.� “It’s a very diverse slate of 12-15 minute talks, including farming, addiction issues and positive psychology, several led by local speakers,� said Buttermann. “We had 25 who applied and selected nine. The primary criteria was how much diversity we could have.�

Dostal’s topic will be “Expendable People.� CADE’s Rebecca Morgan, local food systems. Green Earth owner Dean Roberts’ “Dumb Plans and Lucky Brakes (cq).�

Several out-of-town speakers are coming for the day, including Australian tennis coach Emma Doyle, who speaks on using psychology to inspire young athletes. “She found us through the TEDx website,� said Buttermann. “It’s good to have local people, but having people from outside of the region is a benefit too.�

Unlike a traditional TED conference, where the presenter speaks from the stage and the audience watches, Buttermann plans to set up tables to facilitate discussion. “The idea is that people get to know and talk to each other, not just stare at the stage,� he said. “It’s not a concert performance.�

Harman’s Team Has Turned Back Clock On 50 Years Of Lake Degradation HARMAN/From B1 rence Seaway – “the whole lake ecology had changed drastically,” he remembered in a recent interview. The growth had reduced wave action that used to clean the pebble beach of his boyhood, which was now a stretch of mud and decaying plant life.

“I felt I’d left home, and now there was no home to come back to,” said the 49-year veteran of SUNY Oneonta’s Biological Field Station on Otsego Lake, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary Friday, Aug. 18, with a dinner that includes such local delicacies as zebra mussels. (What do they taste like? “Garlic salt and butter,” he deadpanned.)

“Bill really had a vision to do something very innovative and timely,” said SUNY Oneonta President Nancy Kleniewski when asked about Harman’s tenure. Turning out five masters in lake management a year – SUNY Oneonta’s program is the only one of its kind in the U.S. – his impact will spread across the nation, she said.

The shock Bill Harman experienced on Seneca’s shores spurred the young veteran into the state College of Forestry in Syracuse (now the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry), where he immersed himself in the study of bivalves – clams, whose health can predict if a lake or pond is heading for trouble.

ing and SUNY Oneonta was growing out of Old Main on Maple Street into an expansive campus on the hill. Harman was invited to deliver a guest lecture to a group that included college President Royal Netzger and professor John New, who would soon be chairman of a newly formed Biology Department.

As is happens, the director job had already been filled.

But impressed by his recently developed enthusiasm for snails’ utility – “and competence, I hope” – the college created a job for him, teaching in Oneonta and conducting research on Otsego Lake from the shed on a sliver of lakeside land where the smart office building it now shares with the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies would eventually rise, in 2011.

No sooner had Harman arrived than Otsego Lake turned green. The new Glimmerglass State Park on Hyde Bay was attracting 7,000 campers a weekend, and the sand-filter sewagetreatment system leading into Shadow Brook was spurring algae growth lake-wide.

With the BFS’ intervention and expertise, the state Parks Department was convinced to pump sewage inland to an inground system. Harman, realizing phosphorus runoff from farmland was part of the problem, also began a program to teach farmers lower-impact methods, including recreating wetlands that had been drained

Years of progress followed.

The field station’s first lab was completed (1971), collaborations were formed with entities like the OCCA (Otsego County Conservation Association) and The Clark Foundation, and Land Trust founder Earle Peterson provided access to his 1,000-acre Greenwoods Conservancy in the Town of Burlington.

Bradley Goodyear donated the Goodyear Swamp (near the Glimmerglass Opera) in 1982, and in recent years Rufus Thayer’s 256-acre farm at the Springfield town line

was acquired with an endowment, providing buildings for housing, classrooms and offices – and dock space at the venerable Thayer Livery for the BFS’ 12 powerboats, including the research vessel Anodontoides, appropriately named after one of Harman’s bivalve friends.

The next crisis arrived in the mid-1980s, when alewives were illegally introduced – stocked by fishermen, Harman believes. “Alewives are efficient feeders on zooplankton,” Harman explained. “Greatly reduced, the zooplankton couldn’t feed on algae. Algae increased tremendously.”

By this time, the challenges faced and lessons learned were clarifying the need and mission of the BFS. In the early 1990s, SUNY Oneonta’s new president, Alan Donovan, gave the field station independent status, moving it out from Biology Department oversight and naming Harman director.

“It was an easy decision,” Donovan said the other day.

“And he was successful. He’s a great fundraiser, a great environmental steward. He’s done a great job. I would say he’s one of the icons of conservation in the county.”

In 1996 came the publication of “The State of Otsego Lake, 1936-1996”, in which Harman and colleagues Leonard Sohacki, Matt Albright and Dan Rosen distilled 30 years of experimentation and experience.

That became the basis of the 1998 “Plan of Management of the Otsego Lake Watershed,” which in turn was the basis for the masters in lake management curriculum approved in 2014, the only one of its kind in the nation. Already 10 graduates – five a year – have earned the degree and are applying Bill Harman’s approach to lakes from Long Island to the Buffalo area.

“Its reach has gone way beyond Otsego County to other lakes in New York State and, potentially, to lakes across the country,” said Kleniewski.

Now 80, Harman – he and wife Barbara have a combined family of four children – doesn’t intend to ever retire, but he’s looking ahead nonetheless.

“The walleye decimated the alewives,” Harman related, “enabling the zooplankton to increase, which means they were stopping algae growth. The few native fish that were left – Otsego bass – are coming back strong. We’re beginning to see more smelt, more of the minnows.”

“The water quality indicators are the same as they were 50 years ago,” the director adds, “which is a big improvement.”

Fifty-six years after the dismayed Navy diver stood on the muddy shores of Kashong Point, Willard N. Harman can declare victory.

After 6 Years, Sculpture Walk Becoming Part Of CV Summers SCULPTURE/From B1 Cherry Valley Artworks executive director.

The Summer Sculpture Trail, now in its sixth year, runs from July to October and features 30 sculptures from local and outside artists, all selected by jury.

“This year we have two sculptors from Korea,” Sapinsky said. “One of them lives in the United States, but the other shipped her work here overseas.”

The trail was started in 2005 with a few local sculptures. “We invited local artists to put their sculptures on their lawns and commu-

nity spaces,” she said. “We called it ‘Art in the Hood,’ but it started to get some real attention.”

But as the trail grew more popular, Sapinsky brought in curators and invited regional sculptors, and by 2012, the idea had developed a national reputation.

“People ask about it every year,” she said.

Sapinsky had previously brought the locals together for art in 2003, when Cherry Valley Artworks hosted “A Day in Cherry Valley” and handed out disposable cameras, asking residents to document life in the village.

One photo was selected from each camera and displayed in an art opening.

“Now that everyone has a camera on their phone, we might bring it back,” she said.

The sculpture trail goes on every other year, alternating with the Cherry Valley Kite Festival. “Each of them are a huge undertaking,” said Sapinsky. “We can’t do both.”

To set up the trail is not as easy as hanging a painting on a wall. “Cherry Valley Memorials brings their crane truck to help us set up

the larger pieces,” she said.

“This year, we had to install three big pieces, two on the lawn of the Triangle Tavern and ‘Rings’ at the bank, and that one came in four pieces!”

To travel the trail, a map is available at the Cherry Valley Museum, with the first in front of the Old School and the last at the Triangle Tavern.

But others, like Liz Cucco’s “This Is a Site For Reflection” are hidden at various locations, just waiting to be found. Her work, which pieces colored glass panels to public fixtures, is

listed as “various locations” on the map. “It’s a really nice idea,” said Sapinksy.

Several of the sculptures have found permanent homes in private collections, and others remain on semi-permanent loan, viewed as part of the trail year after year.

The Sculpture Trail again made news in 2013, when a 1,000-pound Elk sculpture went missing from the lawn of the Tryon Inn. It was located in Utica a few days later and returned, and was chalked up to a misunderstanding of ownership.

And this year, ahead of the July 1 opening, Sapinsky walked out behind the museum to find that the small bridge was nearly washed out by the heavy June rains.

“Mark Mastroianni, who has the piece ‘Homage to Bachus’ behind the museum, came over with his son to repair the bridge, free of charge,” she said.

ONEONTA – Heather T. Hotaling, 53, who graduated from SUNY Oneonta and then worked there for 30 years, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born on June 10, 1964 in Ridgewood, N.J., the daughter of John O. and Nancy E. (Scarr) Thompson.

She married Glenn R. Hotaling on July 27, 1985, at the First Presbyterian Church in

Oneonta.

Generous and loving at heart, Heather was always putting others before herself. She enjoyed camping, spending time with her horses and pets, experimenting with new recipes, crafts, games and puzzles, and above all else, spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn R. Hotaling of Oneonta; two daughters, Kelly L. (Hotaling) and Matthew Coolbaugh of Troy, Pa., and Megan E. Hotaling of Oneonta; her father, John O. Thompson of Franklin; siblings, Glenn S. and Jane Thompson of Sloatsburg, Janet (Thompson) and Francis “Chip” Thomas of Sunderland, Mass, and Jean (Thompson) and Dale Ray Downing of Franklin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth R. Thompson; and her mother, Nancy S. Thompson.

A funeral was Wednesday, Aug. 2, at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Mark E. Montfort officiating.

ONEONTA – JoAnn Marie Cresong, a homemaker who is survived by her four children and 36 grandchildren, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Chestnut Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

The daughter of Earl and Jeannette (Carr) Kilts, she celebrated her 69th birthday on July 20.

Surviving are her four children, Joseph Stevens and Summer Eldred, East Meredith, Robert Kilts and Kimberly McManus, Kristina Armando and Arnie Carson III, and Yunnie Kilts and Crystal Luther, all of Oneonta; stepdaughter Priscilla Stevens, Oneonta; 36 grandchildren; six great-grand-

children; siblings, Louie Kilts, Donna Kilts, Ruby Kilts and Paul Shore, John Kilts, Ruth Kilts and Peter Shore and Denise Kilts.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jackey Cresong; parents, Earl and Jeannette Kilts; siblings, Robert, Tina Jr., James, Alberta and Helen Rose; and brothers-in-law, George Stockigt and Randy Condon.

A funeral service was held Tuesday, Aug. 1, at the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. Following the services there was a memorial gathering in Neahwa Park.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Bookhout Funeral Home of Oneonta.

David J. Hamwey, 94, Mount Vision Native Owned Riverview Motel, Grist Mill Store ONEONTA – David J. Hamwey, 94, who for years owned and operated the Riverview Motel and Grist Mill Country Store with his wife Margaret, passed away July 29, 2017, at Bassett Hospital.

He was born Feb. 22, 1923 in Mount Vision, the son of John and Grace (Peters) Hamwey, and graduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1942. He was an Army veteran. He married Margaret Cooper on Sept. 24, 1944, in Oneonta.

In addition to running the motel and store, he was

also employed at SUNY Oneonta in the maintenance department, retiring in 1990.

David was a professional woodworker and cabinet maker, building and customizing his homes and businesses.

He and his wife enjoyed riding his motorcycle whenever possible.

In addition to his wife Margaret, survivors include children David J. Hamwey Jr. of Graham, Wash., Timothy A. Hamwey of Worcester, and Janice M. (Bruce) Smith of Oneonta; grandchildren Jason, Jared, Jamie, Elizabeth, Morgan,

Bella, and Eric; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Harley and Brooke; many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by seven siblings.

A service was held Wednesday, Aug 2 at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home with the Rev. Judith A. Thistle, officiating.

The interment will follow at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Van Vorste, who works at Oneonta’s Green Earth, was one of nearly 50 alumni at the 30th reunion of the Shakespeare in the Valley Saturday, July 29, where old friends

gathered on the grounds to reminisce about past shows and, just like they did when they weren’t on stage, throw a Frisbee around behind the former church.

“Alumni Rachael Castell flew in from London last week and told me, ‘It feels the same, it smells the same’,” said Mar-

tha Van Burek, WKC executive director. “So many parents come to our shows every year so that they can show their kids how they spent their summers.

It was important to them.”

The director of the first play Nancy Fales-Garrett, a playwriting teacher at St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn, who has

a farm East Meredith. “I had taught an improv workshop up here the previous summer, but I wanted to do something with young people,” she said. “Martha asked if I wanted to do the workshop again, and I said ‘I’d rather direct ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’”

It was the company’s first Shakespeare, and it was done twice more, including this year on the outdoor stage. The annual workshop puts kids together performing, making costumes and designing sets, under the direction of theater professionals, with a full production, at the end of the month-long rehearsal.

Garrett brought her friend Bob Briggs to build the first sets, and his daughter, Olivia, performed. “When I was 13, we did ‘A Winter’s Tale’ and the boy I was partnered with was so gorgeous,” she said.

“Nancy told me, ‘Now you have to kiss.’ And he dipped me, and my whole world just exploded.”

“I’ll never forget Nancy screaming ‘You have to act like you’re giving birth! Feel the pain!’” recalled Olivia Throssell, who came up from Philadelphia for the reunion. “I was 12, I didn’t know anything about that!”
