Brenner “More than anything, I was impressed with his philosophy of community policing,” said Herzig, who participated in the search. “He has a good understanding that today’s police departments need to be pro-active and part of the community, rather than just responding to calls.”

Herzig made the recommendation to the Finance & Human Resources Committee. Chair Russ Southard, Council member, Sixth Ward, will present the recommendation to Common Council for a vote during their next meeting on Wednesday, July 5. “Dennis loved spending time up here, and being here now, you can see why,” said Mayor Gary Finn Herzig. “He had a passion for this airport

and for the city.”

Finn, 74, died suddenly on May 18. The night before, he had attended a Planning Commission meeting, where he served as chair.

“The first time I ever met Dennis was when we were both helping to rewrite the zoning code,” said Herzig.

Family Expresses Thanks For ‘Spectacular Tribute’ PASSING/From A1 “You couldn’t miss him.

He was good-looking, with a full head of silver hair and aviator sunglasses. He said, ‘I grew up here and I want to find a way to give back’ – and that’s what he did.”

Following a request from Airport Commissioner Jeff Back during the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, June 6, Council members at their next meeting, June 20, unanimously approved naming the terminal in Finn’s memory. “A terminal is, by definition, a destination,” said Herzig. “Can you think of a more fitting tribute for Dennis?”

Having served in the Army, Finn was given Military Honors. The American Legion Post 259 Honor Guard fired a rifle volley and active Army soldiers presented a folded flag to Finn’s life partner, Ruth Allen. Three Oak Creek Skydivers carried the POW Flag and the American Flag in their jump, landing on the runway.

And his children, Kelly Lynch and Kevin Finn, also shared kind memories of their father. “This was a spectacular tribute to my dad,” said Lynch. “He taught me to be warm, loving, patient and forgiving, and I will miss him every day.”

She spoke of a man who spoiled his grandchildren, who took pictures for Dreams Park and who taught her to drive even before she could legally get behind the wheel. “Next summer will be bittersweet as my son, Aiden, steps up to the plate at Dreams Park, but I know Dad will be watching over him,” she said.

“He took up photography because he saw the beauty in things,” said Kevin. “He photographed everything

– mountains, buildings, airplane cockpits, engines, propellers. Sometimes he even went out of his comfort zone and photographed helicopters. It was his way of capturing that beauty.”

He also related a tale of helping his father build his deck. “In seven days, working sunrise to sunset, we completed two steps,” he said. “But they were beautiful steps. And it made me realize that the deck wasn’t meant to be finished. It was a journey to be enjoyed. He savored every trip to the hardware store, every cut he made, every screw.

In addition to the naming of the airport, a memorial tree was planted at the top of the driveway. “This tree will remind all who come here of the rebirth of the airport that Dennis and so many others were committed to,” said Commissioner Jeff Back.

“It’s bittersweet that we’re able to do this for him.”

verybody loves renewables – in concept. But, in reality, 55 acres of black panels across from Mama Mia’s Pizzeria on Route 23, Harpersfield, or 27 acres marring the lovely Butternut Valley landscape on Route 51 north of the Village of Morris, are the hard-to-love flip side of solar farms.

What’s more, this is just the beginning: A solar gold rush, fueled by tax credits, may be about to descend upon us.

So, already, between Oneonta and Stamford in Delaware County, residents have formed Preserve Harpersfield to slow things down.

The President – The infirmity of his temper, and the heat of his blood, which makes him, in a great political contest like this, a partisan instead of a judge, has led him to a prolonged but futile opposition which has seriously injured the country, continually revived the hopes and encouraged the efforts of the worst demagogues in the southern states, and given to the extremists in Congress the excuse for pressing, with increasing success, measures of increasing harshness. Hat Mr. Johnson been a man of tact and good temper he could have avoided the difficulties which undoubtedly beset him in his office. His constitutional scruples would have gained him “the respect of the best part of the community” – it is because the country sees in him the open partisan of the worst men in the southern states, of the unrepentant leaders of the rebellion, that it dislikes him, and rejects his advice.

Vicinity News: The new pipe line company from Bradford, Pennsylvania to the seaboard is to locate a pumping station at Hancock Junction on the O. & W. line. The plant will cost $100,000 and employ a dozen men.

The Otsego County W.C.T.U. (Women’s Christian Temperance Union) is held at Worcester today and tomorrow.

Afton has had a mad dog and the village trustees have ordered all dogs muzzled. Those not muzzled may be killed on sight.

Miss Swart, who was shot at Cobleskill last week by her brother-in-law, was soon to have been married to Alonzo Voorhees of Albany, after whom Voorheesville was named.

The two had been lovers in youth, but became estranged.

Lately the old ties were renewed and the wedding was close at hand when this dire tragedy carried off the expectant bride.

100 Years Ago

At a meeting of the Board of Health of the City of Oneonta, the matter of the licensing of garbage collectors for the city was considered. Under the provisions of Ordinance 32, the Beach Transfer company was granted a license for the collection of garbage throughout the entire city. No other license was granted, and under this license the Beach Company is the only carrier which can legally undertake the carrying of garbage in the City of Oneonta. Vital statistics will be better preserved and space in the basement of Oneonta’s City Hall will be freed up with help from a new state grant. The City of Oneonta won a $15,685 grant to preserve records on vital statistics and about projects, said James R. Koury, City Clerk, who applied for the award. “I’m very pleased,” he said. The grant includes about $15,000 for microfilming, $500 for supplies and $168 for quality control. Vital statistics, such as birth, marriage June 1957 and death records, from 1882 to 1960 will be transferred to microfilm, Koury said. Record books will be stored in acidfree paper. Papers on the city’s Urban Renewal Project will garbage. Under the Ordinance, householders must also drain be put on microfilm. all garbage and wrap it in paper before placing it in the can.

The month of May failed to produce a single fatal accident in New York State involving a drunken driver, Charles A. Harnett, motor vehicle commissioner disclosed today.

He noted, however, a considerable increase in the number of fatal accidents involving female drivers and drivers of both sexes under 25 years of age. Harnett’s monthly report showed that auto fatalities throughout the state continued to rise during May with the exception of New York City, where a decrease was noted. The month’s 7,361 accidents took a toll of 238 deaths and 9,415 injuries. Rural New York, representing 22 percent of the state’s population, was responsible for more than 30 percent of the fatalities, Harnett said.

We only hope that the next time we travel to the Midwest, we are in a somewhat healthier state. In fact, we discovered when we finally got home, it took a week for us to recover from the rigors of the trip.

• And, of course, once home we had to catch up on all that we had missed in our absence including the Upper Pioneer Street block party, the demolition of the Cooperstown Motel, the season’s opening of the Dreams Park and its attendant increase in activity in the village and the repaving, finally, of upper Pioneer Street as well as the blooming of our rhododendron, which, although we missed them completely, we understand were quite beautiful this year.

Plus, being away during late May and early June always seems to throw us upon our return smack dab into the always hectic summer season in Cooperstown. And thus, we tend to feel like we are always playing catch up when it comes to the summer’s upcoming events, starting off with Ice Cream Social at the Presbyterian Church on Pioneer Street. We have long thought that the official kickoff event for the summer season in Cooperstown is the annual Ice Cream Social.

This year it will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday, July 1, on the church lawn in good weather and on the porches and in the chapel should the weather prove inclement. At the social there will be hot dogs or hamburgers, both served with salads and baked beans, as well as ice cream and homemade

cake. Lemonade and coffee will also be available. Additionally, there will be a sale of handicrafts, which have been made by the Women’s Fellowship of the church.

There will also be games and other activities for the children. It is, we think, an excellent way in which to celebrate the start of the summer season in the Cooperstown community.

We also wish to note that the 4th annual “We Love Our Lake” boat parade will be at 3 p.m. Monday, July 3. The parade of boats will start off Three Mile Point and make its way to Lakefront Park, weather permitting. In past years, about 50 boats have participated with some very creative decorations. The boat parade is a family centered fun event sponsored by the Otsego Lake Association to share boaters’ love of Otsego Lake.

• And finally, on a much more somber note, we were saddened to learn, when we returned home, of the untimely death of Mary Joan “MJ” Kevlin, who has been the co-publisher of The Freeman’s Journal for the past 11 years. Along with her husband Jim, she has worked over the years to make the Journal an integral part of the Cooperstown community. She will be sorely missed. To her family and friends, we extend our deepest sympathy.

Zoning authority resides in the towns and village, but certainly the county Planning Department could play a role if it wished and was empowered by the county Board of Representatives to do so – as single-pointof-contact, coordinating among the towns, enhancing OCCA’s expertise of helping fund its expansion. Under director Karen Sullivan, it is already maximizing its clout influence by demonstrating an ability to get things done.

And there’s much to be done here that will require expertise and action, another reason to fast-track discussion and a decision on bringing more administrative expertise into county government, either

through a county manager or executive.

• Many citizens are still dubious about global warming – it’s a shame the subject has become politicized.

But, in this case, it’s irrelevant: One way or another, solar development is arriving, and it may be huge.

On the plus side, there are economic benefits, if the towns have the expertise to negotiate beneficial PILOTs. (There will be short-term jobs but, once built, only a handful of permanent ones.)

Again, that word: expertise.

We’re lacking it. We need it fast.

If you have solar farms, perhaps you can attract panel-making manufacturers, and with Solar Cities plans for a huge such facility under the Cuomo

Administration’s Buffalo Billion concept.

Still, who knows, a solar boom may become a solar bust. Other technological advancements – from safe, clean nuclear power to perhaps even cleaner ways to burn fossil fuels. A particularly neat option is peridotite, a rock discovered in 2008 that, according to Scientific American, absorbs carbon dioxide and converts into harmless calcite.

It would be great to see a Space-Race-like initiative from the 1960s launched nationally for this new challenge. Lapin recalled that a “focusing event” – back then, Sputnik – energized the nation. Let’s hope it’s not too disastrous, but let’s hope for it nonetheless.

A typical homeowner pays between $350 and $500 per year for Cuomo’s mandated Medicaid costs.

Rather than trimming his own bloated $160 billion budget, Cuomo insists on

sticking it to homeowners, helping to drive more people from New York State. Over 30 percent of New Yorkers are on Medicaid, and our state’s Medicaid program costs over $60 billion each year – that’s more than Texas and Florida combined.

While the Governor turns a blind eye to the repercussions of the property tax burden, Congressman Faso recognizes this burden is a critical factor in forcing many New Yorkers to flee.

Brenner was named acting chief in January, when Nayor, who had been chief since 2012, stepped down to accept a position as director of Research, Development & Training with the state Association of Chiefs of Police.

The prospective chief is son of former mayor David Brenner and served as an officer on the Cooperstown force for several years before joining the OPD. Alongside five other candidates from across the state, Brenner took the chief’s

test in March and scored a 75, putting him in the top three scoring candidates.

Oneonta Detective Sgt. Christopher J. Witzenburg also took the test, scoring a 70, putting him in fourth place.

Brenner, Witzenburg and John Ryan, administrative captain of the Binghamton Police, were all interviewed by Herzig and Katie Böttger, City Hall’s personnel director. “All three were strong candidates,” said Herzig. “I feel good and confident that acting Chief Brenner has the right experience for the City of Oneonta.”

He also recommended that Brenner be paid a salary of $90,000.

Maureen P. Hulbert, 76, Oneonta; Local Philanthropist With Husband WEST ONEONTA – Maureen P. Hulbert, 76, a benefactress to the Oneonta community along with her husband, the late Henry Hulbert, passed away at home on June 2, 2017, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

She was born Jan. 4, 1941, the daughter of Frank and Kathryn (Noonan) Keegan.

As part of the Oneonta community, she served on the boards of directors for Fox Memorial Hospital, the Riley J. and Lillian N. War-

ren & Beatrice W. Blanding Foundation and the Philip E. Potter Foundation.

A loving mother, she was dedicated to her children, who survive her: Thomas Wolek, Anne Wolek, SueAnne DeBergh and Sally Dunleavy.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; a sister; four brothers and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, attorney Henry Hulbert, a civic leader and trustee of many local philan-

ONEONTA – Brian J. Mathewson, 50, a prize-winning salesman at Country Club Imports, died Saturday June 17, 2017, following a battle with cancer.

Brian was a graduate of Oneonta High School class of 1985, and SUNY Delhi class of 1987 where he received training in food services.

Brian loved to travel and moved from Oneonta to Florida, California, and eventually back to Oneonta to open and manage an Applebee’s Restaurant.

Many knew Brian from his time at Country Club Imports over the last 11 years where he was a decorated Salesman and dedicated coworker.

Brian was a member of the Free Masons of Otsego and faithfully attended his church, HillCity in Oneonta.

Brian is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Cooley) Mathewson of Oneonta; his step-children who he considered his own, Amy L.

She was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Laurens, the daughter of Ralph and Esther (Clark) Terrell. She married Gordon (Jim) Angell on May 11, 1974 in Oneonta. He predeceased her October 8, 1999.

Katherine is survived by a son and his wife, Joseph and Marietta Franzese of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, a daughter Patricia Franzese of Provincetown, Mass., a granddaughter and a grandson.

Her brother, Dr. Ross Terrell, predeceased her in 2010.Her former spouse and father to her children, Joseph Franzese, predeceased her in 1998 There will be no public services. Inurnment will be in the Glenwood Cemetery, Oneonta with her parents.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

But despite the hassle, it’s worth it. “They just cheered and cheered,” said Zambello. “They tell us things like, ‘I didn’t even know I liked opera.’ And, ‘Even though I couldn’t understand what they were saying, I could feel the story.’ You see them crying, they

ask questions at the end, they’re very moved by the experience.”

“I got the chance to talk to one man and he said that music always sparked memories,” said the Rev. Elsie Rhodes, Cooperstown First Presbyterian Church pastor, who went with Zambello to teach a class on “Porgy and Bess” earlier this month. “I asked if there were songs that sparked that for him, and he started talking about Christmas carols, about how much he missed his family. “He was very introspective and philosophi-

cal about the choices he made in his life.”

During last year’s performance of “La Boheme,” Hispanic performer Raquel González sang Mimi to rave reviews. “One prisoner said that seeing her was the most moving validation of his life and roots,” said Zambello. “It was such a gracious and generous compliment.”

But there were also reminders of what local audiences take for granted. “After ‘La Boheme’ they tried to give us a standing ovation

and they were forced to sit down,” she said. “It’s what an audience does naturally, and they couldn’t even do that.”

Since then, Zambello also added classes and presentations to the schedule, including a talk on “Porgy and Bess” earlier in the month.

“At the end, Francesca asked if they thought Porgy found Bess in New York, and almost all of them said yes,” said Rhodes. “As an exercise, we asked them to write their own ending to the play.”

inspired that he started his own theater troupe, “3rd Prison From The Sun,” with their first performance slated for this fall. “We’ve been writing back and forth about it,” said Zambello. “I’m helping wherever I can.”

Although many of the men the festival performs for are lifers, some are already making plans for when they are released. “One man told me he was going to come to Glimmerglass to see a show after his release,” said Zambello. “I told him we’d be waiting for him.”

After Years, Tanks To Roll In Oneonta Parade

But Brenner, new to the First Night committee, had seen the NY-Penn Military Vehicle Collectors Club at the Old Stone Fort Days in Schoharie, and recommended Hayes give them a call. “They were giving tank rides in the field, and I was surprised at how quiet they were,” he said.

“It sounded like a regular diesel truck engine.”

The club, which covers Albany, the Finger Lakes, Syracuse and Binghamton, was formed in 1986 as a way for military-vehicle owners to share their experiences with restoring, maintaining, and displaying military vehicles.

There are Jeeps and trucks, but the real showstoppers are the WWII-era M41 Walker Bulldog tank and the WWII M4 High Speed Tractor, both owned

by Jack Pollard, Altamont, the club’s first vice president. Most recently, they

were featured in the Voorheesville Memorial Day parade, and will be part of the Schenevus Fireman’s Carnival July 13-15.

“They’re beautiful vehicles,” said Hayes. “And the owners are always thrilled to show off their big toys.”

But more than that, Hayes wants the parade to reflect the honor of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy. Len Carson, Commander of the American Legion, is seeking World War II veterans to ride in the tanks during the parade.

“These men and women saved the world from Fascism,” said Hayes. “We want to use this day to celebrate our liberation from tyranny, and these are some of the tools they used to do so. It’s historically relevant, and we want to remind people how important it is to remain ever vigilant.”

The parade steps off from Foothills at noon on Tuesday and swings up Chestnut, down Main and South Main to Neahwa. It will be led

by Grand Marshall Molly Swain in a convertible driven by Al Cleinman. Though the tanks’ position in the

parade is to be determined, they will remain in the Neahwa Park for the day, where visitors can ask questions, pose for pictures and see the vehicles up close.

“They won’t be giving rides, unfortunately,” said Brenner. “That would tear up the park pretty badly.”

They also had to get permission from the city’s engineering department to make sure the streets would support the tank’s treads.

“Because of DOT regulations, they actually have to be brought down on trucks a few days ahead of time,” said Brenner. “We told them we would watch over them, and I joked that they should just leave the keys with me.”

Following the parade, the annual Hometown Fourth will be held in the park, featuring a Battle of the Bands, a free Oneonta Outlaws baseball game, food, games and fireworks.

“It’s going to be a big boisterous rambunctious parade,” said Hayes. “And we’ll be able to recognize the sacrifice our parents and grandparents made so that we can live unfettered lives.”
