or the second time in four years, Rockefeller Center will be cutting an Oneonta fir tree for the centerpiece of its holiday decorations.

A landscaping crew from Newburgh is preparing the tree at “Daddy Al” Dick’s property on Route 23, Oneonta, to be transported to New York City in the next few days.

n September 2013, The Otesaga’s new general manager, Marty Rosenthal, had just completed his first year as GM of a major hotel, the 269-room Millenium Harvest

in Boulder, Colo.

If he thought he could relax, he had to quickly think again.

On Sept. 11, the worst floods in its history struck Colorado, and Boulder was hit hardest, with rains peaking at 17 inches on the 17th – the amount that normally falls over a whole year.

Let’s Understand History, Not Censor It

re we seeing a trend here?

In June, one of Cooperstown Trustee MacGuire Benton’s constituents was walking his or her dog and noticed the word “Indian” on the historical marker at Council Rock.

Expressing his or her concern with the trustee, he raised the alarum at the June Village Board meeting, and a resolution was offered to remove the offending word from all public plaques in “America’s Most Perfect Village.”

It turned out, on minimal research, that many Native Americans like to be referred to as “Indians.” (Maybe it’s a sly dig at the hapless Columbus, who mistakenly thought he’d arrived at the Asian subcontinent instead of tiny

To the Editor: I would like to address the controversy surrounding the “Sullivan Expedition of 1779” plaque erected in 1912 in Neahwa Park by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Oneonta Chapter.

Common Council member Luke Murphy, who is seeking a review of the plaque, has referred to some of the language and ideas on the marker as racist. Key words in one article were “savagery” and “racist.”

Historically, as well as in

prehistoric times, savagery has been a part of human existence.

Let me retell a historical event that took place during the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition.

On Sept 13, 1797, a small contingency from the Sullivan forces led by Lieutenant Boyd and with eight others were captured by the Seneca Iroquois led by the Seneca Chief Little Beard and Capt.

It’s good to hear: The Oneonta Vets Club is moving forward regardless. With masks and social distancing, consider going there at 11 a.m. on 11-11 to provide the annual measure of respect to Armed Forces’ veterans.

It’s the least we can do.

Happily for most American families, the wars being fought on our behalf for two decades now in the Middle East involved 1-2 percent of our population. COVID, however, has given us an inkling of what a nation under siege for two years in World War I and four years in World War II must have felt like.

t was shocking to hear the powers-that-be in veterans organizations – not locally, but regionally and statewide – have directed local posts not to commemorate the sacrifice of soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines this Veterans Day. Sure, this is the COVID19 era, and we have to be cautious. But such commemorations are mostly held outdoors – in Oneonta, at the Veterans’ Monument in Neahwa Park; in Cooperstown at the World War I “Doughboy” Statue across Lake Street from The Otesaga – and could have been conducted with minimal threat.

125 Years Ago

Died at her home on Elm Street, Oneonta, Friday evening at 8 o’clock, Mrs. Freeman Murray. Mrs. Murray was born November 1, 1820, in the Town of Milford, Otsego County New York. Her maiden name was Zilpha Westcott. In 1838, she was married to Richard B. Morris of the same town, who died in 1877. In 1887 she was again married, this time to Freeman Murray, also of the Town of Milford, a man she had always known. She was a resident of Oneonta since 1878. She was the mother of William H. Morris and Albert Morris who comprise the firm of Morris Bros. of Oneonta, a sister of Luzerne Westcott. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a most faithful Christian.

The Republican landslide continued to roll along in even greater proportions as belated election returns came in from the West. Besides electing Harding, it was assured that the Republicans would increase their margin in both houses of Congress, and in particular in the Senate where the precarious control by one will be increased to a substantial working majority. Warren Gamaliel Harding celebrated the greatest birthday party of his life, the fifty-fifth, surrounded by members of his family and a circle of neighbors and personal friends which he received quietly at his home in Marion, Ohio as news of his landslide victory poured in.

Eventually I had every stay plotted. Some places with friends, their relatives or my relatives. Other cities at inexpensive hotels, guest houses, hostels, YWCAs. Guide books helped me figure out what currency I would need, where and how to get it.

How to reach my family in an emergency, what to do if I lost my passport, where to buy postage stamps, cold medicine, get bus tickets and more. What sights were free?

When were museums and art galleries open? How and where to shop for food.

Simple ways to save money.

Until then living mostly in Gilbertsville, young Erna Morgan McReynolds took an extensive European tour en route to New Zealand.

Where shouldn’t I go?

• Guide books couldn’t tell me what I needed to take to

emigrate from a tiny village in Upstate New York to the capital city of New Zealand.

And I couldn’t take much.

No suitcases with wheels back then. Lots of climates traveling east to Asia and then to the southern hemisphere, all in two months.

As I traveled further and further from Upstate New York, more and more fellow travelers told me how brave I was – watching me with concerned eyes. Where did I get the courage to set off on my own around the world. At 21. I had never thought that it was brave.

I just did it.

• There sure were scary moments. Being pursued by a leering man at the Coliseum. Escaping from a brutish man on a tour of the Acropolis. Going down back alleys to find WCs

He approached the city’s Commission on Community Relations & Human Rights at its next meeting, and they told him, go for it. He is now sounding out Native Americans in the region to see what they think.

One local expert on that period – and there are several excellent ones in the county – said the councilman might want to reconsider his remarks: “Murphy said the opening clause assigns ‘savagery’ to the entire native population, declares there was no western civilization before Europeans arrived in America and falsely states there are no Haudenosaunee living in the region today.”

The words of the plaque don’t quite go that far. Go read it for yourself; it’s near the lower Main Street entrance to Neahwa Park.

• You might argue the term, “savagery,” is descriptive, not pejorative, per se.

There was a lot of savagery around here in the 1700s – on the part of Colonists and Native Americans, too.

Since New York State history is no longer taught in public schools, that’s probably too little understood. (Since only 1-2 percent of our national population has been fighting the wars-without-end in Iraq and Afghanistan, we

probably lack a full appreciation of the savagery still being committed in our name today.)

Buzz Hesse, who explores “savagery” explicitly in a letter to the editor this week – proceed with caution; it’s not for the faint of heart – is another expert in the Revolutionary War period around here. (In 1968, as an archaeologist with the state Archaeologist’s Office, he discovered an original Indian village in Unadilla, and documented it before it was destroyed.)

The Cherry Valley Massacre, on Nov. 11, 1778, was among the most notorious episodes of “savagery” in American, not just local, history.

On the other hand, by the time the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition was over, only a remnant of the mighty Iroquois remained, which took refuge under the walls of Fort Niagara, Upstate headquarters of their British allies.

There’s plenty of room for scholarly disputation about whys and wherefores.

Murphy himself has said the 1912 marker, donated to the fledgling City of Oneonta by the Daughters of the American Revolution, reflects a period of xenophobia, something worth exploring as we seek to understand our past – to better guide how we live in a diverse nation today and in the future.

• Scholarly disputation, discussion and, perhaps, a new consensus: That’s the way forward. As a trained

historian, Murphy would be an ideal convener, (and this newspaper would be a willing sponsor).

These days, village boards and city councils tend to forget their origins.

They were founded as “special assessment districts,” charged with paving streets, and providing public water, sewerage systems and other services that individual Cooperstonians and Oneontans couldn’t afford to do alone.

Deciding to censor plaques (and, later perhaps, monuments) is beyond their job descriptions. The 1912 DAR plaque provides an insight into a point in time, as in the future the “First American” mural on the Chestnut Street side of Oneonta’s Clinton Plaza will provide into the 20-aughts.

At most, Common Council – and the Cooperstown trustees and any local government – should declare a fiveyear moratorium on any action when these issues are brought before them.

Public argumentation is hot right now.

Let’s have a cooling-off period on these types of divisive action.

Who knows? In five years, or 10, there may be a new consensus, a willingness to look unstintingly at our common, all-encompassing history, and come to a new synthesis that allows Americans to again be proud of our national story and our national achievement, but in a spirit of acceptance of each other: our failings, yes, but our virtues, too.

The scary moments mounted. But on the last,

Told her we would be fine as my body trembled with fear.

And now the scene was set for my first march into the newsroom at the Dominion. God’s gift to journalism arrived after months abroad.

Please do not conclude from our joint authorship of this article that either of us would retract or even reconsider any of those past statements.

Far from it.

Rather, we write jointly because we would like to

continue to disagree the way we have in the past, the way Americans generally have in the past. That is: within a political system in which winners of elections get to execute their policies for a prescribed period, so long as those policies conform to the law.

Within a system in which winners of elections do not face the threat of societal and political paralysis as they attempt to govern.

GOP Chairman: Otsego County Not Even Purple – It’s Red ELECTIONS/From A1 cratic state committeeman, said, “There’s still a strong feeling for the Republican Party here; that’s clear.”

In Otsego County, the only Democrat to gain support from a majority of

Democrat Joe Biden. That’s 57.1 percent to Biden’s 40.28 percent.

• In the 51st Senate District, Oberacker, the county rep from Schenevus who will now succeed, tallied 12,708 for 61.13 percent of the total against Democrat Jim Barber’s 7,959 (38.29 percent).

In the 51st District, it was 63,612 (57.08 percent) to Barber’s 41,929 (37.63 percent). Late The Freeman’s Journal & HOMETOWN ONEONTA in the evening, Congressman Antonio Delgado Barber called was the only Democrat to carry Oberacker to Otsego County and his 19th concede.

What gave him the edge, he said, was “just taking to folks in a common sense manner. We’ve logged 11,000 miles in the 51st, and I’ve spoken to people of all social strata, from farmers to businessmen.”

Asked if he planned to take a little time off, he said,

And Oberacker said that on Jan. 1, his first day in office, he will introduce companion legislation in the Senate.

For Now, COVID-19 Ebbs At Hartwick College, Countywide COVID/From A1 The weekend brought 11 cases, including five Hartwick students and one SUNY student.

That’s down considerably from the 26 Hartwick cases – two staff members among them – traced to Red’s Ale House, the weekend of Oct. 16-17.

Hartwick moved to take-out only dining and suspending the use of gyms, but continued to offer in-person instruction, according to Karen McGrath, vice president/enrollment.

No faculty member tested positive, and though the numbers

crept up, they never reached the state’s 5 percent threshold – 58 cases – which would have required the campus to close and pivot to remote instruction.

Students and staff are tested biweekly, and McGrath said that the majority of cases were asymoptomatic.

If a student was showing symptoms, however, he or she was tested off-campus, she added.

Bond also said that the county Health Department deployed rapid-testing machines to the college to assist with testing.

If students test positive, they

are placed in isolation, either on campus, separate from the rest of the students, or at home.

The cases in Oneonta and Unadilla were not connected to any other outbreak, and no one has been hospitalized.

As of presstime Tuesday evening, there were 39 active cases countywide, the majority of them among students.

Last week, the county topped 1,000 cases, with 1,025 total cases since the first cases were reported in March.

With three weeks left until students return home for

Thanksgiving break, Bond is hoping they’ll consider their nightlife.

“Bars are not a good idea,” she said. “They might not be as constructed as restaurants, where you sit at a table and eat. You move around, and there’s a much higher risk.”

But students may be going home for Thanksgiving, Bond suggests that residents postpone any travel or gatherings. “I had to tell my family that there was no big dinner or visits from out-oftown, even in New York” she said.

And with the cold weather

settling in, Bond recommends that everyone wear masks in any indoor setting that isn’t at home, such as work or school, where closed windows mean less ventilation.

“We’re going to be inside more,” she said. “Everyone needs to be wearing a mask, even if you are sitting six feet apart. It reduces the risk of transmission considerably.”

“It’s not easy for anybody,” she continued. “But until there’s a vaccine, we’re going to continue to see levels of infection.”

HESSE: Yes, There Was ‘Savagery’ Here HESSE/From A4 Boyd was “tied to a sapling”; tomahawks “were hurled at his head”; then “his nails were pulled out, his nose was cut off, an eye was plucked out and (he was) stabbed in various places.”

Then “a small incision was made in his abdomen,” “the end of his intestine taken out and fastened to the tree.

Then he was driven round the tree until his intestine had all been drawn from his body.”

Boyd was then terminated by striking his head from his body. (From “The American Border Wars,” by William Leet Stone, 1843, pages 32-34).

Other examples of savagery against the colonies found in historical records include the Wyoming Massacre where colonial settlers – 360 men, women and children were murdered and scalped; and the Cherry Valley Massacre, where colonial settlers, 43 men, women and children were murdered and scalped.

All these events were perpetuated by some of the Iroquois and Butler’s Rangers against the Colonists. It is important to recognize that these Colonists had been granted a legal right to be in the geographical area where they were establishing settlements.

In 1768, the Fort Stanwix Treaty was drawn between the Colonies and the Iroquois Confederacy (consisting of 3,000 Iroquois) in concert with Great Britain’s King George III. The Treaty ceded land to the Colonies eastward from a line drawn from Fort Stanwix (present day Rome) southeast down the Unadilla River to where it empties into the Susquehanna, then across the Susquehanna to the Delaware River at Koo Koose (present day Deposit,) and thence to Port Jervis and south-westward.

Therefore, the lands that included Wyoming and Cherry Valley had legally belonged to the Colonists for 10 years at the time of the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition.

So where does all of this leave us?

The plaque in Neahwa Park is historically accurate.

It would be incorrect to change the wordage, as it represents historic facts.

Joseph Brant, the Mohawk and Seneca Iroquois, Butler’s Rangers and certain Tories were breaking the Treaty of 1768 when they committed their savage crimes against the Colonists. The language on the plaque does not target the Native Americans because of their race, but

rather because of their behavior. Therefore, the accusation of racism is not applicable.

To put a stop to these acts of aggression, Washington established the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition.

Historically, these acts of savagery were committed not by the Sullivan-Clinton Expedition, but by the Iroquois and Butler’s Rangers.

It is important to note that in the Upper Susquehanna River area there were only three historic Iroquois villages during the 18th century, namely Unadilla, Gunnygunter and Oquaga (this village has several different spellings).

These villages were vacated before they were burned by Col. William Butler’s forces in 1778 a year before the Clinton Expedition came down the Susquehanna.

Clinton did no burning of these villages as the burning had been done beforehand.

The historical facts as stated on the plaque in Neahwa Park should not be altered to satisfy some present-day “politically correct” whim.

We all need to accept historical facts and learn from them; there is much value in understanding history.

Can’t We Finally Be A Civilized Land? Edit Plaque To the Editor: It’s been nearly 50 years since Oneonta’s Neahwa Park actually fronted the Susquehanna River, as still claimed in the plaque there that commemorates Sullivan’s 1779 Expedition.

And it was 60 years earlier, in 1912, that the plaque was written and commissioned.

Time passes. Things change. Language matters. And history does seem to want to repeat itself.

As detailed in his article, “Massacre & Retribution: The 1779-80 Sullivan Expedition,” historian and author Ron Soodalter presents this violent punitive campaign as taking place within an escalating cycle of action and reaction. Sadly, the recent suggestion that the plaque’s language be examined and some

sort of modern interpretive/corrective action be considered seems to be following a similar pattern.

In recent years, far too many of us have been hunkering down ever deeper within our silos and echo chambers, listening only to opinions and positions we agree with, with increasing intolerance for all others. That was bad enough, but now the silos are sprouting gunports.

Can’t we discuss anything even a little controversial with respect anymore? With reference to the plaque’s language, isn’t it about time we made good on the promise of this becoming a civilized land?

To the Editor: Recent discourse has revealed an alarming ignorance concerning the Bill of Rights. It seems a prudent reminder that the origin of these listed Rights was, in fact, part and parcel to how America became a nation.

The foundation of our Bill of Rights comes directly from the Declaration of Independence. For the Declaration itself listed “certain unalienable rights,” which were transgressed

by Great Britain. The Bill of Rights echoes some of those 27 listed within the Declaration.

Point being, such Rights are deemed “unalienable,” meaning that they cannot be taken away, but either embraced or transgressed.

Before adoption of the Constitution, championed by the Federalists, AntiFederalists insisted the inclusion of these essential Rights to ensure Individual Sovereignty of the new American Republic. Hence, the Bill of Rights had then

It only makes sense. For years Britain transgressed the sovereignty of individual colonists; much as today in New York State, where the narcotic of gun control has been nonstop for decades. As stated within the Declaration: “But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and provide new Guards for their future security.”

Likewise, in New York State, the lust for ever more gun control for decades has been unrelenting. The Safe Act, as constitutionally repugnant as it is, still does not satisfy Albany, which desires even more stringent controls.

A despot’s “Never-ending Story” if you will.

We of Otsego 2AS will say again and again: Enough is enough!

Yet, the lesson of the Bill of Rights does not stop there. The first few words of that historic document begin: “When in the course of human events…” This is a generalized phrase meaning human existence.

We, now today, are living, still, “in the course of human events”.

So, within this “human existence”, to what authority do those stand when they put their chosen reverence to New York State law in knowing conflict of the Rights listed in our Bill of Rights?

It has been a curiosity where one pledges their oath upon the U.S. and state Constitutions when they are manifestly in conflict with one another.

Perhaps a politician’s dream to pledge an oath to both, placating a façade of dual reverence. This is precisely where Constitutional Law breaks down to become, quite literally, a Banana Republic.

In essence, what value is our Bill of Rights, when each state maintains its own unbridled rejection of such?

Each establishing their own esteemed preferences, Bill of Rights be damned?

Case in point is, if a politician feels it no issue to restrain and be accountable upon the fabric of Individual Sovereignty to which our country is founded, what trust that they too will adhere to anything?

That is exactly why our Otsego County representatives must be held accountable to their sworn oaths.

For no republic bearing Constitutional authority can exist when that very foundation is chosen to be rejected.

t a Vets’ Club dinner several years ago, Jim Andrecheck, who lives in South Columbia just outside of Richfield Springs, began to tell stories about his combat experiences during World War II. What was amazing to hear was that he had four more brothers who had comparable harrowing experiences – and they all lived to tell about them.

5 Brothers Fought On Land, Sea, Air In WWII, Returned Home BROTHERS/From B1 became a pilot on a B-17 and was stationed in England during the war. Before the war, Joseph liked to box and play baseball, Jim says.

After completing 35 missions, Joseph took part in Project Aphrodite that was manned by volunteers. The goal was to knock out the nearly indestructible launching sites for German V2 rockets that were considered a great threat to American security.

The plan was to have the pilots bail out while another plane would then radio fly the fatigued but explosive-laden B-17 bombers directly into the target.

Joseph bailed out over the English Channel and shortly after he was picked up, the ship he was on fell under attack by German submarines.

Joseph Kennedy Jr. was one of the pilots killed during the Navy’s participation in this desperate mission. Joseph Andrecheck pursued a career in the military and after 22 years of service he was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant colonel and retired in Florida where he lived for the rest of his life. ► ROBERT, WITNESS TO NAGASAKI Robert was the last brother to enter the military. He joined the Marine Corps in 1944.

When he tried to enlist in Utica, officials turned him down because four of his brothers were already overseas. So, Robert went to Albany and succeeded in signing up.

He served as a rifleman in the Pacific and participated in action on Okinawa. “At home we called him Beaver because he used to do a lot of trapping,” Jim says.

Robert witnessed the aftermath of the bombing of Nagasaki while the city was still smoldering. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of corporal. He died in 1981 of cancer possibly due to his exposure at Nagasaki. He was laid to rest at St. Joseph’s cemetery in Richfield Springs. ► FRANK, WON 5 BATTLE STARS Frank, the youngest of the brothers (I’m saving Jim for last) was drafted into the service in 1943 and reenlisted after his first tour of duty.

During the war he served for 28 months in the 554th Anti-Aircraft Battalion that was active in Africa, Italy, Corsica, France and Germany. “I remember in civilian life Frank had this contraption he used to improve his speech – for what reason I don’t remember,” Jim says scratching his head.

Frank was a cannoneer on a 40mm gun and was awarded five battle stars. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1953 from the Army Air Corp.

He retired and lived out his senior years in California. ‫►ׇ‬JIM, AT 99, HE BEARS WITNESS. Last and least of the five brothers in stature was Jim. “They called me the runt,” he says.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1939 and was with the 25th Bomb Squadron in

Panama when war was declared. He was sent to Ecuador for a year and later to North Africa and then on to Italy.

He served as a flight engineer and a ball turret gunner on a B-24 bomber.

“The assistant flight engineer was supposed to man the ball turret gun, but I fit in there better – so we switched,” Jim says with a chuckle. “I was putting myself in the hot seat, but I didn’t mind.”

He flew 50 missions, incredibly with the same crew, missions described by the military as battles of great intensity where many men and air ships were lost.

Over Steyr, Austria, Jim’s crew had orders to bomb a ball-bearing factory. They were in a “Tail-End-Charlie” formation that consisted of seven planes.

“The German anti-aircraft fire was very heavy,” Jim says. “And their fighters and JU-88 bombers were on us.”

In a short time, six of the seven American air ships were knocked down. One engine on Jim’s plane was failing and had to be feathered and the fuselage was riddled with holes.

The tail-end gunner was saved from flak by his parachute and the navigator, in his flak suit, was hit by a shell that didn’t explode.

“The skipper ordered us to bail out but none of us liked the idea of jumping into the unknown, so we stayed with the ship and tried for home.”

By that time the smoke from the demolished factory was rising higher than Jim’s B-24.

The plane barely made it back to the base,

landing on one nose wheel and one big wheel.

The other was blown out.

Later, Jim counted 365 holes in the plane.

His crew was later recommended for the Distinguished Flying Cross but somehow the paperwork slipped through the cracks.

Jim is now 99 years old. Of the war he says, “I’m thankful that I got through it – that all my brothers got through it without a scratch. It was the greatest adventure of my life, though at the time I didn’t know it.”

Nine years ago Jim traveled to West Point where he and 50 other men received the French Medal of Honor for participating in the bombing of German occupied France in preparation for the landing at Normandy.

Jim Andrecheck has made some inquiries as to why he and his fellow crew members never got the Distinguished Flying Cross, for which they were recommended.

Now, he just hopes that one day a letter from Uncle Sam will arrive and instead of beginning with “Greetings!” It might start with, “We forgot something. . .”

“If I ever get that medal,” says Andrecheck, I’ll probably put it in a drawer---but it’ll be good to know that it’s there.” What Jim can’t put in a drawer is the aura of hero that he and his brothers carry with them. Jim achieved the rank of master sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1945.

He is now retired and lives with his polka partner and wife Mary who he likes to say “makes the best cherry pies in the world.”

3 Native Sons In The Movies Thrilled At Oneonta Offerings MOVIE/From B3 “Asteroid,” starring Carvin as Spencer, a man who returns to his hometown, only to find that his house is about to be destroyed by an asteroid.

A rough cut of the film, minus some of the soundtrack, was screened for the actors, crew and others involved in the production at Foothills.

(It was the first public event, other than the weekly church services, at the civic center since the COVID-19 threat arrived.)

It also marks the debut of the Cooperstown, Oneonta, Otsego County Film Partnership Inc – COOP – which hopes to bring filmmakers to the area.

“The Hudson Valley made $25 million last year from the film industry,” said Avery.

“From construction to catering, everybody can benefit. We’re clean, we’re close, and there’s no reason not to bring film crews here.”

The film was shot over two weeks in August on location around Oneonta: at Brooks BBQ, the Red Jug Pub, and Munson’s Hardware (staffed

said Rowe. “And Leslie Ann has been on the radio forever.

“There was a scene that got cut where Spencer and Kenny made a joke about her being a recording, and went to the station, she was just a tape on a loop.”

There’s even a few inside jokes. Producer Joel Plue, in a cameo at a town hall, riffed the city as “on our OWNeonta,” (to groans from both the characters and, playfully, from the audience) and the TV newsman mispronouncing the name as “ONE-eonta.”

“It’s a very Oneonta film,” said Avery. “But we think a lot of people who grew up in small towns will be able to relate.”

Added Rowe, “This film is a love letter to Oneonta.”

Returning here after living and working in the film industry in Los Angeles, Rowe and Avery began discussing making their own movies again. “Dylan had said he wanted to make a narrative film, and when I went over to his house, he had three ideas written on the white board.”

One of them – “Man’s house gets hit by an asteroid” – caught his attention, and every Monday they had “writing days” to finalize the script.

Rowe, who had worked with Carvin on his film “Dolls,” reached out to him about the role of Spencer.

“He said ‘yes’ without even reading the script,” said Avery. “And when he read the script, he loved it.”

“I think it’s such a charming film,” he said. “It’s a nice highlight of the area.”

The audience was asked to give feedback on the film, which Rowe and Avery will incorporate into the final edit.

“A test screening can make or break a film,” said Avery.

“The feedback we get will determine the film we give to directors.”

From here, they will finish editing the film and begin submitting it to festivals, including Sundance, Slamdance and South by Southwest.

Deborah Deb was Hubbs a stay-athome mom until her youngest Nicole went to Valleyview School, where Deb then became a school aide. Deb later worked at Center Street school in the library. At that point in her life she started taking part-time classes at SUNY Oneonta, and then later full time. She graduated in 1993 and became a ninth grade history teacher at Unatego Central School.

Deb was a natural and imaginative teacher. She was passionate about her job and loved her students.

Deb retired in 2010, and for the next five years traveled with Mike.

Deb was an avid reader, a talented knitter and played golf for over 20 years. Her love of family was central to her life. Deb was a true free spirit and always found the best in people. She fought for many causes, including work for NYSUT throughout her teaching career.

Deb is survived by her husband Mike, her son Damon, his wife Radka and their son Hudson, and her daughter Nicole Marie and her husband Nick Lombardo. Deb is also survived by her brother Dennis DuMond and his wife Ruth.

An Interment service was held Saturday Oct. 31, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons, at 2pm with Rev. Kenneth Hunter officiating.

Donations may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA or to the Oneonta Dollars for Scholars program.

ONEONTA – Patricia A. Sellevold, 88, known as “Debbie” and actively in the Wesleyan Church, died Tuesday, October 27, 2020 surrounded by her family.

She was a resident of the Delhi Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. She was born in Shohola, Pennsylvania in 1932 to the late Valentine and Patricia (Winters) Devereaux.

Debbie is survived by her husband of 70 years, Erling D. Sellevold (“Don”) who she met in her church.

She was enchanted by this handsome foreigner with the Scandinavian accent and he soon swept her off her feet and stole her heart. They were married on Feb. 12, 1950.

Debbie enjoyed working as a Home Interiors and Gifts Representative in the

1970s and 80s. She also worked as a nurse for many years.

Debbie was an active Patricia member of Sellevold the Wesleyan Church in Oneonta and was involved in the ministries of the church. She had a passion for teaching hand bells to the children. She used her creative abilities to make lovely Christmas ornaments which were hand-sewn and embellished with pearls, lace and decorative jewels.

She leaves behind beautiful memories, funny stories, interesting memoirs, and many scrapbooks for her family to share and

enjoy for years to come.

She is also survived by two sisters: Margaret (Lewis) Ackley, and Linda Smith; her four children: David Sellevold, Cynthia (Steven) Tait, Patricia (Dane) Scudder, and Erik (Kim) Sellevold; 13 grandchildren, 9 greatgrandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family members.

A private memorial service will be held at the Wesleyan Church for immediate family members in the near future.

ONEONTA – Deborah Mary Hubbs, 67, a former Center Street librarian and teacher at Unatego, passed away October 26, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Hartwick College, which enabled her daughters to attend Hartwick College tuition free.

Kathleen loved spending time with her grandchildren, spoiling them every chance she had. She always was sure to have the “wow” gifts for the grandkids at Christmas time and birthdays. She enjoyed going to family sporting events and had a love for animals, especially her dogs. She had a sweet tooth and would drink “Coke” all day long.

ONEONTA – Kathleen Marie Barrett, 66, who worked in Maintenance at Hartwick College, passed away October 24, 2020 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 28, 1954 in Jamaica, the daughter of John A. and Henrietta M. (Thies) Barrett.

Kathleen grew up in Massapequa and graduated from Berner High School.

She moved to North Franklin in 1989 and worked as a lunch lady/bus monitor at Franklin Central School.

After leaving her job at Franklin Central School, she started a new position in the maintenance department at

officer and active member of the book group. In the 1960s and 1970s she was active as a leader in 4-H. She is survived by her three children, Carter Harrison, Carlisle, Pa; Dianne Tokar, Miller Place; and Douglas Harrison, New York. In addition, Meryl was blessed with two granddaughters and their loving husbands, Brianna and Adriano Scacchi of Massapequa Park; Brittany and Scott Siegle and a greatgranddaughter. In addition, she is also survived by her three nephews James, Derek and Dennis Van Deusen as well as cousins.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie Van Deusen.

ONEONTA – Meryl Mae Miller Harrison, 88, an active member of civil service groups, died peacefully on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta.

She was surrounded and embraced by her children.

She was born July 5, 1932, in Oneonta, the daughter of Raymond and Marguerite (Brandow) Miller. She married Carter H. Harrison on July 25, 1954 at the Elm Park United Methodist Church, Oneonta.

He died May 26, 1993.

She graduated from Oneonta High School in 1949 and from State University College at Oneonta in 1953.

Meryl was a resident of Oneonta for most of her life.

In her early years she taught second grade in Scotia and Binghamton before returning to teach in Oneonta.

Meryl enjoyed reading and music and frequently attending concerts, plays, and went antiquing. She had a passion for travel and was fortunate to have traveled

Already, Otesaga’s New GM Prepare For Weekend Of 27 Films Heads Year-’Round Initiative

With the ground floor flooded, the relatively new GM set up “triage� – an emergency-management unit – in the second-floor ballroom to keep the hotel running as winds stronger than fabled Hurricane Katrina buffeted the property.

Other hotels raised rates, taking advantage of patrons forced from their homes.

Marty, imbued in customer service, took a longer view, lowering rates. “We didn’t want to take advantage of the situation,� he remembered in a Friday, Oct. 30, interview, in his high-ceilinged new office.

He arrived at the 111-yearold Otesaga two months ago from the 250-year-old Equinox in Manchester, Vt., where he was general manager.

In listening to Marty Rosenthal recount his story, he’s been adept at turning challenges into opportunities every step of the way, just as he did in Boulder.

At The Otesaga for only two months, he announced last week that the storied hotel will, for the first time in its history, be open year-’round.

In part, he said, it’s because the Cooper Inn, The Otesaga’s sister establishment, is being used during this COVID-19 winter as temporary offices for Clark Foundation staff members from New York City.

Seeking to draw guests within driving distance – even as close at Utica and Oneonta – looking for a cozy weekend getaway, Rosenthal also announced a Winter Wonderland Special, a Holiday Lantern Tour package and a Curl & Unwind Special.

This year’s challenges also present “a good testing ground,� he said. “It gives us the opportunity to put our toe in the water.�

Turning a challenge into an opportunity came early for Rosenthal, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in East Islip.

An avid rugby player at Springfield College and a good one, a coach nonetheless pointed out to him on his 1989 graduation that he simply wasn’t big enough to pursue the sport professionally.

So instead, he founded Ultimate Rugby, organizing development camps for players, developing equipment and rugby wear lines, and hosting tournaments.

With no rugby in the winter, Rosenthal headed up to Vermont in 1999, and was soon running the ski and snowboard school Mount Snow, with promotions following one after another.

When the Mount Snow Company was sold in 2004, the new owner shifted him to the Steamboat Grand in Steamboat Springs, Colo., in food & beverage. By 2011, he was general manager of the Millenium and Copthorne hotels in Boulder.

Along the way, he reached out for training offered by AHLA, the American Hotel & Lodging Association, and developed a leadership style, “growing teams, monitoring, raising standards and implementing new ideas.�

He credits his advancement to one phrase he heard repeatedly, “Marty, can you go and fix it?�

One example of many: The Steamboat Grand used to routinely win Wine Spectator magazine’s Award for Excellence, but had slipped. He again made the Grand a contender. “Did they need any of that?� he asked. “No. But it made them better and more

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the Film Days to move to a virtual format, where ticketholders are given a passcode to watch each movie on a streaming device of their choice.

To participate, go to glimmerglassfilmdays.org The 27 films will be available for 48 hours, starting with the Film Days opening film, “The Seer and the Unseen,� screening from 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 – Saturday, Nov. 7. “The downside is that we don’t have a chance to socialize,� said curator and founder Peggy Parsons. “But you do have a chance to see more films.�

There are ways, Pope said, to bring the festival atmosphere home. A “Film Days in a Box� was prepared, containing popcorn, movie-theater candy and local goodies, including a Film Days mask. “It gives it a fun, festive feeling,� said Pope.

The boxes quickly sold out, but don’t worry if you didn’t get one – Tin Bin Alley is packing up boxes of old-fashioned movie theater candy, and the Green Toad Bookstore will be offering a digital pop-up shop, where you can buy books related to the festival, including “Driving While Black.�

And Alex’s World Bistro and the Hawkeye Grill are offering special themed dinnerfor-two menus, including Mexican for “Diana Kennedy: Nothing Fancy� and Japanese food for Werner Herzog’s “Family Romance, Inc.�
