The company started 21 years ago, shortly after owners Alan Rubin and David Freed graduated from SUNY Oneonta. Today, the company provides work for over 150 people and

• Family Planning of South Central New York is honored with the Quality of Life Award in recognition of programs and services that provide life-saving

• The Otsego Land Trust is honored this year with the new Environmental Stewardship Award of The Otsego County Chamber.

The Otsego Land Trust has partnered with over 100 landowners to saved 11,000 acre that will be forests or fields forever.

“To support our theme this year, we will provide an environmentally friendly event,” said Barbara Ann Heegan, Chamber president/CEO. “We will use biodegradable dining plates at the event and promote recycling opportunities that will encourage sustainability in Otsego County.”

If ‘Food Hub’ Doesn’t Mean ‘Food Hub,’ What Does It Mean?

Upon review it is likely that this project will be a Type I Action requiring a long Environmental Assessment form.

However, it is also likely that the project will not result in an adverse environmental impact therefore the Lead Agency will declare a negative declaration and the project and SEQR will be complete.

eading that paragraph, from Page 17, it’s clear why, even after all the discussion about a proposed “food hub” for downtown Oneonta, few people (that includes editorial writers) are clear on what it is.

Former mayor Dick Miller thought in broad strokes.

His original idea was – and this is paraphrasing – something to do with craft beer and natural foods that would bring people back into the downtown.

Something. Knowing Dick Miller, he wasn’t locked in to any particular detail.

“Food hub” was simple and catchy. Innovative ag was taking off. Why shouldn’t farmers drop off meat and vegetables at a central point rather than making that 280-mile ’round trip to New York City themselves?

It harkens back to the milk plant days, when Worcester, Unadilla, Cherry Valley – all our downtowns – were flourishing. Farmers would drop off milk daily, get a milk check and spend it in nearby markets and

stores.

• Since, a private trucking enterprise – Lucky Dog Farm in Hamden – is partly filling the “food hub” need.

Plus, all the truck traffic in downtown Oneonta probably wasn’t that great an idea. (When the D&H yards are revived, with a railroad siding and easy access to I-88, a “food hub” may be part of that mix.)

So “food hub” is no longer what’s happening downtown, Mayor Gary Herzig has been emphasizing lately.

It’s misleading. It’s confusing people (including editorial writers).

So what have we got?

First – so far, and more coming – $13 million in downtown redevelopment money aimed at bringing 180 units of market-rate housing to center city Oneonta.

180 apartments. 180 families – 360 or 540 or 720 people – with money to spend within a half-block of many now-vacant storefronts. (By the way, there IS a countywide housing shortage.) And a lot of that $13 million will be focused

• Second, the Mohawk Valley Food & Beverage Innovation Center, which has supplanted “food hub.”

Thus, Oneonta can become the entry point for beer tourism, The Hammondsport or Watkins Glen of Beer. ►Outgoing – Grass-fed beef, organic chicken, fresh produce, maple syrup, artisanal cheese are all around us. How can WE fill the $1 billion unmet demand in New York City? Trucking’s a piece – thanks, Lucky Dog – but also product development, marketing, advertising, quality control

Reading the excerpt below (not the one above) from the MVF&BIC (MIFF-bic?) feasibility study shows how this is heading in that direction.

The six-story building at Chestnut and Market will be the brain-center (and two or three stories of apartments make it financially sustainable).

But redeveloping the parking deck for stores and

apartments, reimagining Foothills as a health and entertainment center, adding apartments above the Westcott parking lot – all this contributes to the new and prosperous whole.

• Another point of confusion: MIFF-bic uses “Mohawk Valley” instead of “Upper Susquehanna” or “Foothills of Catskills” or somesuch. That’s because the Cuomo Administration, somewhat randomly, put Otsego County in the Mohawk Valley Economic Development Region.

The name simplifies communication with Albany’s checkbook.

Besides – as rail historian Jim Loudon made clear in his packed lecture on the county’s Oneonta-to-Mohawk trolley history Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Oneonta History Center – we’re tied more closely to the Mohawk Valley, historically, then we sometimes remember.

And, yes, Dick, there’s a food component, too.

On First Floor, Store With New York State Products; On Second, Space To Taste Delicacies, More Editor’s Note: This is a description of current plans for the six-floor Mohawk Valley Food & Beverage Innovation Program on the site of the former Oneonta Ford, Market and Chestnut.

T

he first and second floors of the 87,778-square-foot, six-story building have been designed as a true “Innovation Center” where different uses complement and collaborate to advance the food and beverage industry in Oneonta and Otsego County.

• The first floor will contain a retail space that will offer product focused on NYS’ food and beverage industry, having such items as beer, wine, spirits, local cheese, breads, maple syrup and products from the local artisan industry.

The first floor will also have a commercial kitchen with a variety of “spaces” for various uses such as bread making, meat processing, and the creation of value-added products. It will also include a catering kitchen that will service the second-floor demonstration

kitchen.

Finally, the first floor will contain an entry lobby for the residential units proposed on floors 3-6.

• The second floor will complement the first in that there will be a flexible-space demonstration kitchen. Food will be serviced from the catering kitchen on the first floor and the demonstration kitchen will be designed to hold small to large crowds.

There will also be flexible-space conference rooms associated with activities in the building.

The majority of the space on the second floor will be used as Entrepreneurial Training Center/ administrative offices. Operated

by Otsego Now, this space will be used for job-readiness training for a variety of different sectors in Otsego County.

The intent is to partner with local and regional companies, colleges, and the local school system (K-12) with state-of-the-art equipment to tailor job-training classes for existing companies, entrepreneurs and other start-ups.

Technology and support in the

building will include a number of smart “white” boards, PCs and Macbooks, projection units, broadband, flexible classroom space, and “huddle rooms.”

The intent is to create a space that can be a hub of activity that is accessible, regional and collaborative to support the continued growth of the economy in the City of Oneonta and Otsego County.

• Floors 3-6 will include apartments bringing 24/7 activity to Market Street and downtown Oneonta.

According to my dictionary, “political” means “pertaining to, or dealing with the study, structure, and affairs of government, politics, and the state.” If our students should be protected from politics, what may be the effects of such protection? Will they learn also that matters political will be none of their business, that

matters political should be explained in textbooks but not printed on posters, that politics are what we pay our politicians to do but not what ordinary people, especially children and others below voting age, should concern themselves with?

Some Couldn’t Care Less – So Care More

e have been in Cooperstown long enough to remember when the Cooperstown Food Pantry was located in cabinets in the basement of the Village Library Building. We suspect that the goal then was no doubt the same as the goal is now. According to the Food Pantry’s 2016 Annual Report, their wish “...is to alleviate hunger in northern Otsego County.”

Needless to say, the Food Pantry has not only moved, but it has also grown in the 39 years it has been serving people in this area. The Presbyterian Church has supported the Food

Pantry by providing a rent free location for a number of years now. And, of course, donations from the community go to meeting the needs of those who are helped CATHERINE by the Food Pantry.

LAKE And, it must be noted ELLSWORTH that the Food Pantry is fortunate that “... only about 4 percent of our income is spent on operating expenses. This is due in large part to our all-volunteer staff, an operational grant from the

Scriven Foundation which covers that 4 percent, and the generous support of the church.”

The Food Pantry has a most successful voucher program with the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market which allows clients to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. There are also farmers at the market who make generous donations on market days to the Food Pantry. Also, a garden at the church provides fresh vegetables and herbs.

Additionally, fresh produce is received from the Kid Garden at the elementary school as well as from local gardeners.

The new firm of Ford and Howe have got thoroughly started in the manufacture of “Howe’s Patent Excelsior Cultivator” at the factory on Broad Street. We have examined the new Cultivator with considerable care and feel safe in predicting for it a satisfactory success. It may be worked by one or two horses and is intended for the culture of corn, potatoes, turnips, hops and indeed all crops planted in rows.

It stands on wheels like a mowing machine, the axle being high enough to pass over corn at the second hoeing, and most vegetables at an advanced stage of growth. It is also arranged to answer nearly all the purposes of a harrow, being rapidly adjustable for deep or shallow work. Its course between rows, or over them, is easily directed by the driver of the team.

125 Years Ago

The entertainment given at the Methodist Episcopal Church last evening was among the most interesting and pleasing literary and musical treats that has been heard in Oneonta this season. The announcement that the Misses Raymond and Terwilliger were to appear in the program as elocutionists was sufficient to interest and attract a large number of our townspeople to hear the entertainment. The program was so varied and attractive that every effort was warmly received and a response was demanded from every encore. Assisting Miss Terwilliger and Miss Raymond in the program were the following ladies and gentlemen in musical selections: Miss Bertha Cook, Miss Harriet Stewart, Miss Lulu Rowe, Dr. A.S. Barnes, and W.E. Ford. The proceeds of the entertainment will be applied toward paying for the new McCammon piano recently placed in the church. The net proceeds were over $40.

Associated Press sources reveal that Germany has proposed an alliance with Mexico and Japan to make war on the United States, if this country should not remain neutral. Japan, through Mexican mediation, was to be urged to abandon her allies and join in the attack on the United States. Mexico for her reward, was to receive general financial support from Germany, reconquer Texas, New Mexico and Arizona – their lost provinces – and share in the victorious peace terms Germany contemplated.

Flashing an improved brand of basketball, Oneonta high school defeated Cooperstown, 24-16, in a hard-fought contest before a large crowd. The “Orange and Black” gave “Shorty” Long’s new combination quite a scare in the second quarter when it gathered eight points to gain an 11-10 advantage at the intermission. But Oneonta had too much

Some Don’t Care, So Others Must Do More COLUMN/From A4 The Food Pantry participates in “The Backpack Program,” a children’s supplemental nutrition program where children who are at risk of food insecurity are supplied with a backpack of child friendly food every Friday afternoon at the school.

The Food Pantry’s annual report notes that “The Leo Club at Cooperstown High School collects, packs, and helps distribute the backpacks weekly as a community service project.”

With the monetary donations received, the Food Pantry purchases food from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. In 2016 the Food Pantry was able to purchase 184,786 pounds of food from the regional food bank. The Food Pantry also benefits from the “Price Chopper’s Fresh Recovery” program.

According to the annual report “Meat and seafood frozen on their sell-by dates as well as deli, dairy and produce which despite having reached their sell-by dates, are still safe and edible, are picked up and delivered to us daily by volunteers.

This is in addition to the day old bakery products we have been receiving for many years. In 2016 we received 68,984 pounds which would have otherwise been discarded.

Price Chopper employees...are enthusiastic partners in this new endeavor to prevent food waste.”

Plus it is pointed out that “Schneider’s Bakery continues to donate day old bakery products twice a week.”

All in all, it is safe to say that the Cooperstown Food Pantry does an exceptional job providing a much needed service to the area. The Food Pantry has clients from Cooperstown, Richfield Springs, Cherry Valley, Edmeston, Hartwick, Milford, New Berlin, Burlington Flats, Mount Vision, West Winfield, Worcester/Decatur, Roseboom, Schuyler Lake, Schenevus, Springfield/ East Springfield/Springfield Center, Westford and Maryland/Portlandville.

We salute all the donors and volunteers, as well as the businesses and charitable organizations, which make the Food Pantry possible. We would also like to note that while many of us make donations at Thanksgiving or Christmas, the people in need of food tend to eat all year. Thus, we would like to suggest that those who can make holiday donations for all the holidays throughout the year.

In closing, we would like to leave you with this thought: “In a world full of people who couldn’t care less, be someone who cares more.”

Unfortunately, today an unworthy Republican congress and president have already forgotten about those people who lost their homes, life savings, and 401(k)s, because of corporate greed and corruption.

According to the Pew Charitable Trusts: The 2008 financial crisis cost our country an estimated $648 billion due to slower economic growth.

Federal government spending to relieve the financial crisis through the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) resulted in a net cost to taxpayers of $73 billion according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Furthermore, 5.5 million more American

jobs were lost due to slower economic growth during the financial crisis than was predicted by the CBO in September 2008 forecast.

According to the Federal Reserve, we lost $3.4 trillion in real estate wealth from July 2008 to March 2009. That is roughly $30,300 per household. The Federal Reserve also reported that there was a lost of $7.4 trillion in stock wealth from July 2008 to March 2009.

Only three Republican senators voted to pass the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform & Consumer Protection Act into law. It’s the most ambitious Wall Street reform ever, and was intended to keep the banks from risking money they didn’t have and creating another worldwide crisis.

Recently, President Trump signed an executive order to start doing away with Dodd-Frank. He directed his

administration to evaluate regulatory action taken by Democrats, with an eye toward eliminating what his advisers say are burdensome rules on financial services firms and consumers. He also mandated a delay of an Obama-era rule that required retirement advisers to act in their clients’ best interests.

GOP senators revoked a regulation on coal-mining pollution in streams.

Also revoked was a Security and Exchange Commission rule requiring energy and mining companies to reveal their payments to foreign governments.

A bill has been passed in the GOP House to repeal regulation passed while Obama was president to curb greenhouse gas pollution from oil and gas wells. Senate Republicans have a similar bill on their agenda.

Trustees, Not Residents, Responsible For Trolley Decision To The Editor: I would like to reply to a quote attributed to me, in Catherine Ellsworth’s column, regarding the proposed Main Street trolley stop, that ultimately did not happen.

Unfortunately, I was misquoted in another local paper and I believe my misquote was picked up there.

I did not say to the departing residents “in all fairness, you have caused everyone

on that trolley to stay on it for an extra mile.”

I did say “in all fairness, we have just voted for everyone on that trolley to stay on it for an extra mile.”

I was in no way saying that any of our trolley planning efforts are being thwarted by any resident.

That trolley stop was my idea, the Village Board voted in favor of the residents’ views, and my position did

not succeed.

Our residents have every right to express their thoughts to the board at any time. That is why we are there. That is why we are a democracy.

I fully understood the important views of our neighbors in not supporting that trolley stop.

I weighed the pros and cons as I saw them and made my call. I knew that is was a

close call either way. I fully accept the outcome.

We are always working to balance the needs of our residents and the needs of our visitors.

As a result of my proposal not passing board review, a new trolley route is now under consideration and is working its way through the village review process.

Deli Buyers Add Own Touches DELI/From A1 regulars in the 27 years he owned the Center Street Deli.

“We ran a good business,” he said. “We took care of our customers, and it worked.

“If people came in and didn’t have enough money, we’d cover it for them. If a college kid came by, needed to borrow a hammer and some nails or a pinch of spice for a dish, we’d give it to him.”

Companie, a 1964 OHS graduate, bought the deli in 1987 from Edward Johnston. “I was working for Great American and he offered to sell me the store,” he said. “His son was running it at the time, and after a few years, we were able to come to an agreement.”

He updated the entire space, including expanding the seafood department and increasing deli offerings and keg sales.

“We used to have frats and sororities come in and we’d give them a special price,” he said.

“We had folders so we could track how many they bought. It was our Keg Club.”

And they brought in the regulars. “I’m still the first guy in every morning,” said Tom Moriarty. “I’ve gotta have my coffee and a paper or I go through withdrawal.”

Another morning regular, Melvin Cook, would even make corned beef and cabbage every St. Patrick’s Day, and Companie’s sister-in-law, Verna, would make chili and rice pudding. “She’s been doing it for 20 years,” he said.

He became a fixture of the neighborhood, known for bringing groceries by to cus-

tomers who couldn’t get down to the store – and sometimes, even going the extra mile.

“One Christmas, I went over to talk to Mrs. Bagnardi across the street, who had just lost her daughter,” he said. “She was really struggling, and I wanted to do something nice for her.

I went over to JCPenney, and they had this big angel with these wings that lit up in all different colors, and I said to Robin, ‘I’m going to buy that and give it to her.’ She cried when I gave it to her and put it in her window. She kept it for years.”

And on Tuesday, Feb. 14, he turned over the reins to cousins Chuck Bace and Bob Putnam.

“I worked in delis growing up in Long Island,” said Bace.

“Growing up, that was where you went every morning before school.”

Bace moved to Oneonta and worked at Brooks BBQ for 15 years, while Putnam, a Cooperstown native, worked for his parents at Nationwide Insurance.

“Frankie and Robin left us a great business,” said Bace. “It’s a cornerstone of the area.”

And, as Frankie did before them, they’ll be adding their own touches to the business.

“We’re going to start offering homemade cannoli and cheesecake,” he said. “We’re going to start making fresh meatballs, chicken cutlets, even fresh eggs for breakfast sandwiches.”

They’re also going to upgrade the kitchen to include a fryer. “Fried food and beer,” said Putnum. “What more could a college kid ask for?”

County Rep. Andrew Stammel, D-Town of Oneonta, sees the situation as lose-lose. “Not only would we have a weaker force, but the city would have a weaker force.”

Oneonta Town Supervisor Bob Wood said, “I don’t feel there have been negotiations in good faith at this point.” But the city’s mayor, Gary Herzig, says, “We’re always willing to talk” and that the two sides aren’t far apart.

The commissioners’ decision is the latest step in yearslong negotiations between the fire commissioners and the city, which in the fall of 2015 advised it would be raising the town’s bill from $880,000 to $1.2 million the following year.

The city Oneonta Fire Department’s (OFD) annual budget is $4 million.

As year-end neared with no agreement, the city went to court. State Supreme Court Judge Michael V. Coccoma ordered both sides to negotiate but, when that failed, imposed a three-year contract on Jan. 21, 2016, while negotiations continued.

Despite the formation of a fact-finding commission and mediation through VFIS (Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services, Inc.), the leading emergency-services insurer, little progress appears to have

“I don’t’ think it’s a negotiation ploy,” said Herzig in an interview. “My sense is the fire commissioners are very serious about establishing a volunteer fire company in the town district,” which includes most of the town at the city’s edge: Southside and the East and West ends.

Saying “I don’t see any benefits” in the proposed breakway department, he ticked off the downsides, beginning with safety: “I don’t see how the fire district can be protected with the same degree of safety as they are from the professional paid firefighters.”

Further, homeowners and businesses in the town district will see their insurance rates rise. Finally, as is, “the city also benefits because we have a larger fire force. More people on call. We’re equipped to face emergencies, and that’s good for the city and the people of the town.”

For his part, Supervisor Wood, who pointed out the fire commissioners are independent of town government, agreed with Herzig that the status quo is best for both municipalities.

Interviewed Friday, Feb. 17, Wood said he had a lengthy meeting the afternoon before with Mayor Herzig and “I was very discouraged to hear him say the city is taking a take-itor-leave-approach.”

Wood recounted that he was involved in town-city fire negotiations while he still lived in the city and served on Common Council, and that negotiations were always rancorous, going back to the

original town-city agreement in 1980, because payments were “randomly established.”

In 2005, while Wood (he moved to the town in 1995) was chairing the fire commissioners, the city and town district agreed on a formula: Determine what it costs to run the OFD, and apportion the cost according to the total assessment of each entity. That resulted in a decade of peace.

In the past few years, however, new issues have arisen, Wood said. For instance, the city’s billing service is charging 10 percent of the $1 million billed annually by the ambulance service to patients’ insurance companies. The city wants the town district to pay a cut of that.

Additionally, he said, the city wants to apply the formula to OFD-related costs borne by other departments in City Hall – purchasing and personnel, for instance.

Wood called the current standoff “a giant step backwards,” and said he plans to tell the commissioners “it’s extremely difficult to provide the type of coverage the residents of the town need,” particularly

the big boxes and mall on the Southside.

For his part, Herzig pointed out that both sides agreed to VFIS’ hiring, and had been meeting with the consultant over four months last fall.

“He developed a formula of his own,” said the mayor. “His formula was more complex than the original Bob Wood formula. It took into consideration many factors: assessed value, population, square miles, the number of calls, and assigned values to each factor.”

“He provided a formula. We accepted it; the town fire commissioners did not,” Herzig said.

Additionally, the city team – Council member Russ Southard and Finance Director Meg Hungerford – agreed on the numbers imposed by Coccoma: $1,030,000 in 2016; $1,050,000 this year, and $1,100,000 in 2017, “plus a minimal increase,” the mayor said.

The public hearing is a good thing, he added, “an opportunity for the people of the town fire district to express what they want. That’s really what’s important here.”

Fears Of Change Voiced To Common Council

Landlords and residents came forward at the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21, to share concerns about the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) projects.

Sandy Mathes, CEO of Otsego Now, was there to outline projects city consultant Stantec and the DRI committee have put forward as priorities, including the Mohawk Valley Regional Food & Beverage Innovation Center, the redevelopment of the Westcott Lot and a redesign of the parking garage into a transit hub, stores and apartments.

“There is not enough parking,” said Dr. John Sweet.

“When my wife and I come downtown to go out to eat, we chose restaurants that are on the outlying edges. We aren’t going to walk 500 feet from the parking garage. It’s too hard.”

Weinberg was also concerned about the housing proposed with every project.

“I have a million dollar payroll and 23 employees, but I have more vacancies than I have ever had before,” he said. “We rent to families and to students, but we’re all hurting.”

“I looked at the housing study that was done, but what it didn’t take into account was supply and demand,” said Seth Clark, who runs Peter Clark Rentals with his father. “But we’re the guys living that study, and we don’t see demand downtown.”

Mayor Gary Herzig assured attendees that further studies will be done before apartments are built. “These are private investors,” he said. “You can be sure that they’ll do their own studies before they build one apartment or take away a single parking space. Right now, this

is all at the conceptual stage.”

And Council members had concerns as well.

“I’m wondering what the sustainable jobs are,” asked Melissa Nicosia, Second Ward.

“We’re a static community; education, healthcare and small businesses. What jobs are you foreseeing, and how can we sustain all the space we’re going to build?”

The railyards will be the biggest development site, said Mathes, with an anticipated 100 jobs in light manufacturing, as well as the Oneonta Business Park and the proposed warehouse in Schenevus.

“If we can create a vibrant Oneonta, Human Resources will tell executives, ‘We can get people to move there.’”

“We are constantly hearing from our biggest employers that they can’t recruit people because there isn’t the kind of housing they want,” said Herzig.

“We want to create the housing and the jobs at the same time.”

or David Meves, the home where the buffalo roam is Skye Blue Pastures in the Hartwick hills.

But not everyDavid Meves examines his herd one agreed. “I told from the safety of a tractor cab my nephew, John – after all, bison are wild.

Smith, that I was going to retire and raise buffalo,” he said. “He told me I was crazy!”

Though he’d maintained a camp in Portlandville for years, in 2015 he bought a former bison farm on Fred Field Road. “There were buffalo here about 20 years ago,” he said. “Fred Field had a dairy farm originally, then Warren Kimble had the buffalo.”

Formerly an architect in Manhattan and Long Island – he built two homes for Barefoot Contessa Ina Garten – Meves raises the buffalo for meat for Serene Green, the Sag Harbor farm stand nephew John runs with his wife, Laura.

And he does so as naturally as possible.

en Beisler isn’t afraid of winter.

He lives for it.

“I’ve been snowboarding since I was 12,” he said. “I did it for a few years in college, but then the winters got terrible. But my roommate at RIT – Zhenya Grinshteyn – got talking about how surfers build their own boards, and we thought we wanted to

try it out with snowboards.”

Now, Beisler, a 2005 Milford graduate, and Grinshteyn, who lives in Philadelphia, own Empire Grown, a custom snowboard shop on top of Clover Hill Road in Oneonta.

“He comes up every few weeks to help me knock out orders,” he said.

“We just sent one to Japan, and we’ve got two in Europe.”

Hartwick Buffalo Rancher Gets Some Unexpected Help – From Stevie BUFFALO/From B1 In winter, for instance, he was putting bales, but the adults crowded out “the little ones.”

Now, he puts the hay out in rows, and the buffalo – little and small like – line up to eat, just as if they are grazing.

“I do this three times a day,” he said. “…They’re not on a feed lot. They’re calm. We keep the families together. I want them to have some life.”

To start, he trucked in a halfdozen at a time from Iowa.

“They’re consider exotic animals,” he said. “It took me awhile to get the permits to raise them.

They’re wild animals.”

Now, he has 60 bison – 14 born locally last year – roaming free on 330 acres. “They graze on about 100 acres in the summer,” rotating between two fields, he said.

“Last summer, I looked out in the other field, and they were all grazing. The bull, Stevie, he’s figured out how to unlock a gate.

They stayed there two weeks!”

Stevie’s been known to take care of his pack. “When we first got them, one bull got into some mud up to his chest,” he said. “We were trying to get him out with the packing strap of the Bobcat around his horns.”

Freed, the bull was barely standing, and Meves was worried that he might have to put the

bull down. “I looked up and there was Stevie, standing on the sluice pipe,” he said.

Under Stevie’s reassuring gaze, Meves was finally able to get the bull to his feet and back off to graze, and only then did the boss bison move, following the bull back out into the pasture.

Still, these are wild animals, and fights do occasionally break out between the bulls.

“We had one bull that had gotten injured, so we separated him out and put him in the pen to be slaughtered,” said Meves. “Stevie found him, opened the gate and let him out,” he said. “And that’s when I decided I’d better keep Stevie around. He’s smart.”

So far, he has slaughtered two buffaloes, and does so in a way that is consistent with his respect for the animals – and a commitment to quality of the product.

“We separate them from the herd and put them down with one shot,” he said. “It takes all day to get one down, but it’s the humane way to do it. If they’re agitated, the meat isn’t as good.”

Larry’s Custom Meats down in Hartwick hamlet does the processing, and the nephew sells the meat at Serene Green for as high as $20 a pound. “We got 460 pounds of meat” – $9,200 at retail – “from the first and 575 pounds out of the second,” he said. “Buffalo is lean, and low in cholesterol, and it’s

really heart-healthy.”

Though right now Serene Green just sells roasts, steaks and ground bison, Meves hopes to expand into using more of the animal. “We want to make hot dogs, broth from the bones, leather from the hide and turn hooves into dog treats.”

And though he’s happy to have gawkers drive by, he warns people not to get out of their cars to get a better look. “It makes them nervous,” he said. “They’re wild animals, and if you get into their space, they can charge you. These animals weigh 2,000 pounds and

can jump six feet straight up.”

He hopes that another 20 babies will be born this summer, and in all, he wants to have 120 animals.

“I’m an old guy, I’m retired, I don’t have to do this,” he said as he closed up the pen. “But I love them.”

Octagon Shape On Tip, Custom Colors Attract Buyers To County-Made Snowboard SUCCESS/From B1 snowboard. “All snowboards are the same,” he said. “They have a tip, a tail and an edge. But ours have a unique octagon shape on the tip, and we use a two-part mix for the sidewall so that we can have custom colors.”

Beisler made his own board with a woodgrain finish, and one for his sister, Daisy, using bright floral fabric. “She wanted something that was girly, but not overthe-top,” he said. “We’ve done a

lot of boards with fabric under the plastic topsheet to make a really unique design.”

In 2013, the partners used Kickstarter, the online vehicle, to launch their faster Empire Grown brand. “We bought the press and materials,” he said. “And we sold 13 boards that year.”

Each board takes 6-10 hours to make, not including drying time.

“We try to use as many local materials as possible,” he said. “My brother Sam runs Foothills Sus-

tainable Forestry, so he cut all our poplar, and we get the birch from Whiteman’s Lumber in Portlandville. Ed at Otsego Bicycles lets us use his base grinder to finish all our boards.”

A basic board will run $450, but can go as high as $1,000, and it’s customizable every step of the way. “We’re comparable to a lot of small companies,” he said. “These are all-around sort of boards. We like to ride big mountains, rather than try to do jumps or tricks.”

And this season, they received a gold rating at Board Insiders, an online review site, naming them one of the best boards for 2017.

“They reached out and asked if we could send them a board, so we made them a girls’ and a guys’ board,” he said. “They tested them out last spring, and they really liked the guys’ board. Don’t know if they tested the girls’!”

Beisler, who works as a civil engineer with James Forbes P.E., hopes to one day make the compa-

ny a full-time job. “We’ve started looking at how to make skis and we’ve made one set so far,” he said. “People who ski are really into custom skis, even more so than snowboarders.”

And Beisler said this winter has been good for snowboarding, especially with the storm that hit over the weekend. “Maybe I’ll take a day off work,” he said as he tested out his board on the hill by his shop. “Go up to the mountain.”

IN MEMORIAM Kay Amatucci, 76; Worked 35 Years At Hartwick ONEONTA – Kathleen “Kay” Amatucci, 76, an active volunteer who worked for 35 years at Hartwick College, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2017 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

Kay was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 21, 1940 the daughter of Thomas and Florence (Lynch) Coakley.

She was the third of seven children, having four sisters and two brothers.

She worked at the Navy Ships Store Office (NSSO) where she met her husband of 56 years, Sonny Amatucci. They married in 1960 and had two daughters, Gina and Kathleen.

Kay and Sonny moved to Oneonta in 1964, a place they came to love. She worked at Hartwick College for 35 years as an Administrative Assistant in the

Academic Affairs office.

After retirement, Kay enjoyed volunteer work and joined a Kathleen line dancAmatucci ing class, which she thoroughly enjoyed. She made a number of friends and cherished them all.

Kay and Sonny took a number of vacations and visited many countries thanks to their daughter Gina and her husband Bernard being a military family.

She was very proud of her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved attending as many sporting events for them as she could.

Kay will be remembered for her beautiful smile and laugh, her joy at the simpler things in life. Some of her favorite mottoes were, “It’s better to laugh than cry,” and “C’est la vie.” She touched the lives of many.

She is survived by her husband, Sonny Amatucci of Oneonta; daughter Gina and Bernard Mater of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; daughter Kathleen and Brett Bentley of Westford; grandchildren, Samantha Mater, Jayme, Jessica and Sierra Bentley; three sisters, Pat and Tom Burriesci, Maureen and Dennis Tobin, and Florence and Harry Nespoli; a brother, William Coakley; sister in law Elvera Coakley; brother in law, Pete Menghi; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased

by her parents; a brother, Thomas (Tommy) Coakley; a sister, Susan (Sue) Menghi; her mother and father in law, Joseph and Tesi Amatucci; a brother and sister in law, James and Lena Amatucci; and a sister in law Carmella (Millie) Baldo and her husbands George Baldo and Donald Cetta.

A funeral mass was held Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in the spring at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Building Fund, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.

ONEONTA – Samuel A. Pondolfino, 97, a dentist who raised 13 children in Oneonta, died peacefully Feb. 16, 2016, at his home in Santa Rosa, Calif.

He lived there with his son and daughter-in-law Peter Pondolfino and Lisa McKinney and their children Katie, Grace and Sam. Sam was born to Anthony and Rosario Pondolfino on Dec. 5, 1919 at his parents’ home above their business, Tommy’s Place, on River Street. He was the sixth of seven children, graduated from Oneonta High in 1937, earned his undergraduate degree from Syracuse University and his DDS from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Sam was an Army captain during World War II, stationed in the Philippines. He and Mary were married in Sidney on April 25, 1944, and soon after they started their prodigious (Haas) Tursi, and brothers family.

Jane Wakin, 80, Served in U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps ONEONTA – Jane Wakin, 80, who served in the U.S. Nurse Cadet Corps in WWII, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.

Jane was born on Sept.

7, 1927 in Monticello, the daughter of Charles and Ethel (Thompson) Haas.

She grew up on a farm in Monticello, and at the age of 16, took a bus to Oneonta attend Hartwick College.

She received her degree as a Registered Nurse and served in the US Cadet Nurse Corps throughout the United States during WWII. She met her husband David while working at Homer Folks Hospital in Oneonta, marrying him six months later on June 17, 1948. She worked at A. O. Fox Memo-

rial Hospital for many years, at the Upstate Baptist Home, and for Dr. B. Vakili. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Rosary Society, and Young at Heart, the Red Cross Association, the Heart Association, West Oneonta Fireman Ambulance Association, the Eagles Club, the Moose Club, the 6th Ward Athletic Club and was President of the ARC at the time of the Oneonta workshop formation.

Jane enjoyed cooking, baking, growing her garden and tending to her beautiful flowers. She and David loved to dance – square dancing, polka, round dancing, and waltzing. She was also a great seamstress and would make all her square

dance dresses.

Jane is survived by her children, David C. Wakin, wife Karen; Harold J. Wakin, wife Denise; Michael S. Wakin; and Virginia Lee, husband Richard. She is also survived by her grandchildren David E. Even after they moved, first to Florida and then to Santa Rosa in 1997 to be close to children and their 35-andcounting grand and great grand children, Oneonta was always home. There was little he looked forward to more than his daily family dinners and his weekly teetimes with friends Solovich, Lambros, and Torrey.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife and their eldest and youngest children, Kathleen and Paul.

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Patricia and Don Hilmer of Los Angeles, Mary Pandolfino of St. Petersburg, Fla., Sam Pondolfino Jr. and John Smith of Santa Rosa, Margaret Pondolfino of Portland, Ore., Annie and David Hirshfield of Santa Rosa, Peter Pondolfino and Lisa McKinney of Santa Rosa, Sara Pondolfino of Santa Rosa, Tony Pondolfino of Rhode Island, Frank Pondolfino of New York City, Lou and Wendy Pondolfino of Anchorage, Alaska, Joe and Mimie Pondolfino of St. Petersburg, Fla., and his daughters-in-law Chrysanthe Voreas of Portland, Ore., and Lauren Maxwell of Anchorage. Sam also leaves his dog, Gracie.

Services will be held in Oneonta for both Mary and Sam in the fall where they will be inurned at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Details will follow.

ONEONTA – George E Farrell II, 86, an Air Force nurse who served as the director of continuing education at Fox Hospital, died on Thursday, February 16, 2017 in Oneonta.

George was born on August 6, 1930 in Far Rockaway. He was commissioned as an Air Force Nurse in 1956. During his 20 years in the service, he completed a tour of duty in Vietnam.

He completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Syracuse University in 1962

and a master’s degree in nursing at the University of Colorado in 1969. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1976.

George was an assistant professor for the School of Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi and later, the Director of Continuing Education at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

George is survived by Barbara (Fink), his wife of 62 years; his five children, George R Farrell of Pensacola Beach, Fla., Suzanne Murphy (David) of Oneonta,

Christopher Farrell (Carlos) of Brooklyn, Sean Farrell (Mary Beth) of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Kevin Farrell of Pearl, Miss.; granddaughter Pamela Cherry, two sisters-in-law and a brother in law, and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday February 23 at St Mary’s Church, 39 Walnut St., Oneonta.
