Board Insider Hails Beisler’s Oneonta-Made Snowboards

Ben Beisler, a civil engineer with James Forbes, P.E., has just produced what Board Insider magazine is calling “One of the Best Snowboards of 2017” with his company Empire Boards, which he started with his RIT roommate, Zhenya Grinshteyn.

The custom snowboards, with use a rider’s height, weight, shoe size and riding style, are built from trees grown behind their Oneonta shop on Clover Hill Road.

They’ve had orders from Japan, France and Australia.

Oneonta’s Ceili Getman Builds ‘Grow Boxes’ To Teach Science

C

eili Getman, Oneonta, helped launch a new service-learning partnership aimed at getting local elementary school children excited about growing their own food.

With $3,976 grant funding acquired through SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community, Assistant Professor of Biology Sean Robinson built and installed vegetable grow boxes in all 12 kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms at Riverside Elementary School last fall.

As an added challenge for the fifth-graders, Robinson built hydroponics growing units and placed them side-by-side with the regular grow boxes so the students could see which type of system worked better for their plants.

Getman, who is majoring in Environmental Sustainability, was assigned to one of the classrooms as

part of a group of three to four student “box buddies.”

A total of 68 biology and sociology students participated in the program.

Throughout the fall semester, the students visited their assigned classrooms several times to help the children plant vegetables and herbs and to present lessons about food, society, the environment and plant biology.

Each lesson included group discussion and a hands-on activity, such as a game or worksheet.

“This project has really helped my students learn the information better,” said Robinson. “It’s also helped with other skills, such as public speaking. Initially the students were nervous about presenting in front of anybody – even little kids – but then by the second or third week, they got totally into it. They got comfortable, they found their groove. And they had fun with it.”

Over 62 Years, Pastor, Wife Still Celebrate In ‘Sickness, Health’

“I’ve been going every day for the last four and a half years,” he said. “The only time I missed was when I was in the hospital.”

He pushes her in her wheelchair, sometimes two miles, through the halls of the nursing home and the hospital. “Taking care of her comes naturally,” he said. “The doctors say it keeps her focused and active, that it’s what keeps us both going.”

Every night, they eat dinner together, and for her 84th birthday on Sunday, Feb. 5, they had a gathering with family and friends.

Their anniversary is Feb. 10, and Valentine’s Day is just four days later.

The couple met while working at a movie theater in Evansville, Ind. “I was an usher, she was a popcorn girl,” he said. “I looked at her and I said, ‘She’s gonna be my wife!’ She was so nice to other people, she had such a good personality – and she was pretty!”

But war came between them, and Farmer was drafted in 1950 to serve in Korea. “I was in communications, but when they found out I could play the trombone, they pulled me out and put me in the band!” he said.

He returned home in 1954 and found Bonnie was still in town. “She was still single, so we dated a few months, but we were both eager to get married” he said. “We just went

to the minister’s house, had a small reception.”

And when he went to seminary in 1964, she supported him, even when they arrived in Otsego County in 1967. “I was ready to give up,” he said. “We were staying with friends, we didn’t have jobs or an apartment, but she built me back up, and within a week, I had a job as a foreman at a plastics plant in Binghamton and she was working at Woolworth’s!”

He preached at Fellowship Baptist in Unadilla for four years, then at River Street Baptist for 42. And she worked a variety of jobs, including owning a restaurant and a snack stand in the Southside Mall.

She also helped him pick the music for his weekly Gospel Hymn radio and TV show, and they raised four children, Jennifer, Lisa, Melody and Paul.

But in 2010, she began to show signs of Alzheimer’s, and in late 2013, she moved into the Fox Nursing Home.

“Love is sharing and caring,” he said. “It’s pulling together in hard times.”

He still spoils her as best he can. He bought a wheelchairaccessible van so he could take her out driving; in the summer through the hills, in the fall to look at foliage and over Christmas, took her to see the lights.

“She gets ice cream every night,” he said. “I learned a long time ago to say yes to everything she tells you she wants.”

And every night, he waits until she’s tucked into bed to drive home to Davenport.

“Life goes by so fast,” he said. “It just flies.”

“Last year, Princeton had 10,000 people come to The Wall,” said Schmidt during the Parks & Recreation Commission meeting Monday, Feb. 6. “With everything we have going on Memorial Day, I’m sure that number will be eclipsed here.”

Schmidt is no stranger to veterans’ causes.

In 2015, Schmidt raised $6,000 to install a monument at the end of Neahwa’s Veterans Memorial Walkway to the nine OHS students who died in Vietnam.

Schmidt himself served in the Marines in 1967-71, part of the Vietnam Era, but wasn’t sent to Southeast Asia. Still, he knew many of the people on the monument.

To bring The Wall, Schmidt applied the same tactic he used to fundraise.

“I hounded them,” he joked.

“The Wounded Warriors are playing in Damaschke Field that Saturday, and I thought

it would be good to have the Wall here while they were visiting.”

He also reached out to local foundations, and started a GoFundMe page. “The people I asked were so enthusiastic,” he Gene Schmidt said. “We raised the money for The Wall, but we’re still taking donations for tents, advertising, that kind of thing.”

And in delivering fundraising letters to local businesses, he observed another important piece of The Wall’s mission.

“There was a young lady behind the counter, and she’d never heard of The Wall,” he said. “I asked my niece’s daughter if they studied the Vietnam War in school, and she said they grouped all the wars together and talked about them for a few days.”

Said her uncle, “We can’t let this be forgotten.”

The Wall will arrive with a processional. “They don’t like to use the highway,” he said. “They like to go through small towns so that people see it.”

He’s in talks with the Patriot Guard, the Oneonta police and fire departments and the state police about participating in the escort.

“It’s an honor to bring it here,” he said.

Though The Wall may be viewed Thursday evening, a formal opening ceremony, featuring speeches and music, will be at 6 p.m. Friday, May 26.

Visitors to The Wall can look up names in two books, which will list what panel and row the person can be found on. “We’re still looking for volunteers who can help people find names and guide them to the wall,” he said. “And we want people who can help set up and take down.”

And The Wall will be open 24 hours a day. “Some people don’t want to come when there’s a crowd,” he said. “It’s a very tough thing.”

Cooperstown Trustees Do Well, But Challenge Would Up Game

C

ooperstown village elections should be contested – that goes without saying, comrade.

This year, however, any challengers seeking one of the two spots up for election Tuesday, March 21, would be hoeing a particularly tough row.

One, the Republican Party again left the field, failing to even schedule a caucus to see if there was any interest.

So prospective challengers would have to go it alone, without the support of any organization.

Two, of the incumbent Democratic nominees, these two – Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch (who usually leads the ticket) and the eminent Lou Allstadt are probably the hardest to beat. Tillapaugh is focused on making parks ever better, Allstadt is right in the middle of an ambitious rehabilitation of 22 Main (rechristened “Village Hall” just in case anybody forgot who the landlords are).

They’d be tough to unseat.

On the whole, it’s hard to find too much fault with the current Village Board , particularly in the areas it should be focused on: The actual administration of services for 1,852 souls (and dropping?)

For people still resistant to paid parking, the current trustees can take the blame.

But the $400,000, give or take, the parking fees generate is (finally) repairing streets much in need of repaving and pothole filling.

Credit is due to the incumbents for hanging tough.

Mayor Jeff Katz (not up for reelection) was able to convince Assemblyman Bill Magee and state Sen. Jim

Seward to come up with $2 million each to renovate the half-century-old sewage treatment plant – one of multi-state significance, given its location at the source of the Susquehanna River.

That, plus a no-interest loan and prudent set-asides under former Sewer Board chair Ted Peters, will allow the $7-8 million project’s completion without any rise in sewer rates. Not bad.

When the trustees get preachy, it is mildly irritating – the We’re-AllAgainst-Global-Warming resolution in 2014 and the We’re-All-Nice-To-Everybody-(And-Don’t-Say-WeAren’t) resolution from December are the cases in point. Bromides. On issues beyond the village limits, let the citizens make up their own minds.

In the same vein, to the degree the decision to divest fossil-fuel stocks in the EMTs and firefighters’ investment portfolio was research-based, fine. To the degree it was the opinion of true believers, not fine. (In

the end, returns should be monitored and – if this turns out to be a faulty investment strategy – adjusted.)

In particular, the trustees have a tin ear when it comes to merchant concerns.

Sometimes they are downright hostile. Alone among probably every municipality in the U.S., the Village Board has stated, sometimes with considerable passion, that it has no responsibility for the flourishing (or not) of the business district.

This is simply wrongheaded – and wrong. More than any other sector, a thriving business district raises assessments, and thus generates more property tax revenue, which benefits everybody.

& crafts festival. (It may suppress parking revenues, after all.)

Any merchant or restaurateur would have instantly recognized that extending parking from two to four houses in parts of the retail district would turn on-street parking into parking lots.

Happily, the trustees retreated on that one in the face of concerned businesspeople.

It’s from that sector – the Cooperstown Chamber and village merchants – that serious future challenges to trustees should (and, let’s predict, will) emerge. It’s a little late this year, but would-be candidates can still pick up petitions from the Village Offices at 22 Main, collect 50 signatures, and submit them by Tuesday, Feb. 14, to get on the ballot.

Give it a try, for everybody’s benefit.

The village trustees are better than OK, but a brisk challenge from Main Street, successful or not, would make them even better.

Human Rights Abuses Not Unique To Trump

Voters Having Second Thoughts – Or They Should Be To the Editor: My message is simple.

If you are a well-meaning, hard-working individual, frustrated by governmental bureaucracy and unhappy with the status quo, you probably voted for Trump.

The man you elected has had decades of experience getting his own way. An individual who brushes aside facts in favor of his own distorted view of reality.

Every executive order issued since his inauguration, all outgrowths of his campaign have resulted in a firestorm of reaction by individual citizens (like you and me), national organizations and even foreign

leaders who find his actions offensive, appalling, ill conceived and deplorable.

By implementing his campaign promises, Trump has upset the balance of our democracy, which is not the same as “draining the swamp”.

Domestic policies cannot be based on bumper-sticker slogans. It’s not that simple.

Considering the domestic and foreign uproar reported in the daily news, Americans (at least those who voted) made a very poor choice.

Do you remember that proverb, “You can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear”? Let’s face it, you have

been deceived, and now is the time to stop this foolishness and get the country back on track.

It is my hope that the congressmen, senators and local representatives we have put in office will follow their consciences and stop

worrying about their own political future. Deep down inside, they know right from wrong, and now is the time for them to listen to the people who are rightly upset with Mr. Trump.

Bruce Jenner expected it and he got it – the James E. Sullivan Memorial Trophy from the Amateur Athletic Union as the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States in 1976. The Olympic decathlon champion, who set a world record 8,618 points in the grueling 10-event track and field test at Montreal last summer, beat out swimmer John Naber and figure skater Dorothy Hamill, both also Olympic Gold Medal winners.” Jenner became the first Olympic competitor to score more than 8,600 points in the decathlon event.

“This is the perfect way to end my athletic career,” declared Jenner when the award was announced. “I can walk away from athletics very well satisfied.” Last year, Jenner was the runner-up for the Sullivan Award. The Sullivan Award honors the founder of the A.A.U. and was first given to golfer Bobby Jones in 1930. Jenner becomes the 47th recipient.

Jenner is a native of Mt. Kisco, New York and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.

Evidently Mr. Justin Adams has created an exceedingly favorable impression as an actor in the Oneonta theatre-going public, judging from the large and appreciative audience that greeted him and his company in the “Rag Picker’s Child” at the theatre last evening. Mr. Adam’s busy and brilliant brain has never done nothing better in the way of strong comedy drama, than in this, his last effort. As an author, he is original, bright, and capable. He is a clever young comedian and his portrayal of the rather unique character of John James Christopher, Benjamin Bimms with his everlasting recital of the virtues of his cure-all was cleverly done. He was equally as much at home in strong emotional acting as in comedy lines, and his drive from one to the other was exceeding interesting. Harry Brook’s banjo solos were received with tremendous applause. As Officer Brady he was the same old copper, and the boys in the back of the house received him with his popular exclamation. Tonight the company close their engagement with the great railroad play “Under the Gaslight.”

CVS Corporation, a leading east coast drug store chain, is branching into the Midwest and South, and reaching into the top tier of pharmacies with a $2.8 billion dollar takeover of Revco DS, Inc. As a result of the takeover, CVS, which has been concentrated east of the Mississippi, would have the most outlets of any drug store chain and would be second only to Walgreen’s in terms of revenue. The two February 1917 companies agreed to the deal in response to tougher comaround about the world – there are plenty of examples – and petition from mail order drug sellers and big supermarket pharmacies. By combining, CVS and Revco hope to gain make up your mind.”

The Hartwick College Board of Trustees yesterday voted to name the new men’s dormitory scheduled for construction during 1957 and 1958 “Leitzell Hall.” The 110-man dormitory, costing about $400,000, will be named in honor of Dr. Charles W. Leitzell, founder and president of the college from 1929 to 1939, and his wife, Mary Mumper Leitzell. Mrs. Leitzell resides at 63 Elm Street with her daughter Mrs. Madalyn Leitzell. Dr. Leitzell died in 1950.

The original Leitzell Hall, a two-story frame structure, was partially destroyed by fire in February 1955 and has not been used since that time. The Board of Trustees also moved to appoint a special development committee to lay out a 15-year program of action for college expansion.

In Paris, a United Nations sponsored panel, consisting of hundreds of scientists from all over the world, has just declared that average global temperatures will probably rise 4 degrees Celsius over the next century. If so, catastrophic flooding, famine and water shortages may follow, along with the extinction of up to half of existing animal species.

Malaria and other tropical diseases may spread. Among the coastal cities threatened by the higher ocean levels caused by melting ice caps are London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong. One solution to global warming is called a carbon tax.

Let’s Not Make Evidence-Based Thinking The Scapegoat To the Editor: In his letter to the editor in last week’s edition, Dick Downey admits that congressmen “don’t have scientists, economists, and engineers on staff.” But that’s OK, he says, because their staffers listen to complaints.

So if some of Faso’s constituents make enough noise – maybe they don’t like wearing motorcycle helmets, or they don’t like required immunizations for their children to enter a public school – then a congress-

man like Faso and his unqualified staffers will be free to ignore the evidence on these or other issues and make political instead of scientific decisions.

Even worse, the bill Faso supported (HR22) took the effective decision-making on every regulation out of the hands of scientists at federal agencies, and gave it to those same unqualified congressional staffers.

Congress has had no problem overturning problematic regulations in the past, but at

least those regulations were first established by evidence-based procedures, setting the terms of debate. All the science supporting a regulation now, no matter how compelling, can simply be ignored and the regulation preemptively dismissed, putting the public needlessly at risk. Congress has always had the power to modify or overturn regulations which seemed too onerous, but until now the scientific evidence supporting them had to be considered.

Our economic problems have

many causes – the outsourcing of jobs, the costs of pollution, the decline of unions, the concentration of wealth in a few hands – and will only be made worse by dispensing with regulations altogether. Making evidence-based thinking a scapegoat for our problems, as Downey does in his libertarian-based fantasy world, is a dangerous conclusion to be resisted.

‘Psycho, Antichrist With Raging Demons In Head?’ Absurd!

To the Editor: When I worked for General Electric I traveled through many small towns and read a lot of small town newspapers. I have read a great number of letters to the editor.

However, the worst such letter was James Dean’s in last week’s newspaper.

Most of us don’t really know how good President Trump will be. So far he has chosen an excellent vice president, and most of the cabinet secretaries he has nominated are good choices. For James Dean to call President Trump the “American psycho” and the “antichrist” with “raging demons in his head” is absurd!

As I read the Dean letter, it brought to mind an incident that happened to me. I was retained as a consultant to work with International College in Beirut to develop two new academic buildings. Midway through the project the college held a special event to celebrate the progress.

During the event a man came up to me and said to me in a loud voice, “you’re a terrorist.” I asked him why he had said that.

He said because I was an American. Dean’s letter rambles on the same way as my tormentor did.

According to Dean’s letter, Trump is a “frightening demagogue, a sexual predator”

and “a dark raving lunatic,” and that Trump “wants violence, he wants fear, he wants confusion, he wants us to distrust and hate others who are not like us.” Really!

And, lastly and with no evidence, Dean says that Trump “is looking for reasons to create a police state” and “will use the Army and encourage local police to move against the American people.” I think I’ll put on my Army officer’s uniform and confer with the Cooperstown Village Police to see if they’re ready.

Trump Inherits Civil Rights’ Erosions Pioneered By Obama HAMMOND/From A4 lowed to drive, gay women are beheaded, and victims of rape are subject to public torture, as if they are to blame for being raped.

It is also inconsistent for the protesters to condemn Trump’s travel ban on seven Moslem countries, when they did not protest the fact that Obama bombed these same seven countries throughout his Presidency, killing women and children, and dropping over 26,000 bombs on them in the year 2016 alone.

After all, what is worse, preventing travel to the U.S. by the wealthy citizens of these countries, who are the only ones who can afford it, or bombing their entire populations mercilessly in an illegal war that was never authorized by Congress.

Another problem is the fact that the Obama Administration was the first in American

history to claim the power to assassinate American citizens with no judicial process and no evidence, merely because the President says they should be killed. Obama also signed into law the indefinite detention provision of the NDAA on Dec. 31, 2011 (section 1021 of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act).

This draconian law permits the President to lock away American citizens on his word alone, with no due process, no lawyer, no trial, and no access to their families, indefinitely; in other words, potentially forever.

When this law was challenged in court, a challenge that was eventually denied, the Obama Administration refused to rule out the possibility of using this unconstitutional law against

journalists.

I am concerned about human rights under Donald Trump, but I was also concerned about human rights under Barack Obama. I have spoken out against both Presidents. Trump has already continued the work of Obama by killing an 8year-old girl in Yemen, whose teenage brother Obama had previously killed years ago. And while these protesters may think Obama was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and may have trusted him with the power to kill Americans or lock them up forever with no due process, I wonder if they also trust Trump with these same unconstitutional powers, which he has inherited from Barack Obama.

Native American Tribes Define Their Membership, No One Else To the Editor: It is unclear why Tom Heitz decided to select excerpts from identical stories first appearing in out-of-state newspapers for his “20 Years Ago” piece in the Jan. 27 Hometown History column.

Whatever Heitz’s motive, the end result and his failure to fact-check the story are unfortunate. Setting aside the bias expressed in the opening two sentences, the Kaw Nation, a federally recognized tribe, like scores of other tribes, does not have a blood quantum requirement for membership (enrollment).

Persons seeking tribal membership must trace their lineages to the 1902 Kaw Indian Allotment Roll, a list of individuals compiled by the federal government.

Although the Kaw Nation has a casino, this is not the case for nearly 60 percent of federally recognized tribes.

Moreover, while the numbers of Indians have increased over the last few decades, along with

those of other ethnicities and for a variety of reasons, for the purposes of the Census there is no requirement that claims of ancestry by respondents, Indians or otherwise, be substantiated.

Checking the box “American Indian or Alaskan Native” on the Census form has nothing to do with being or becoming a member of a tribe.

What is most important are the numbers of members of the 566 federally recognized tribes, the state recognized tribes, and those unrecognized by the United States or its States.

The last sentence in Heitz’s piece is accurate. American Indian tribes have always held inherent sovereign powers subject to the plenary authority of Congress. Among those powers is that of a tribe to set rules for and determine who is eligible for membership, a power that neither the federal government nor its courts may interfere with.

Kudos To 50th Winter Carnival Committee, But It’s Time For A New Cadre To Step Up To the Editor: Every winter for the last five decades, the Cooperstown community has held its annual Winter Carnival, which provides a necessary escape from the realities of winter and an opportunity to rally the community together. This event has stood the test of time due to the efforts of dedicated community members who volunteer their time and energy.

For 50 years, the Cooperstown Winter Carnival has brought us together, and I feel it is only appropriate that this community acknowledges the efforts of this year’s committee chairs Brenda Wedderspoon Gray, Hanna Bergene, Mary Lynn Bridger, and Shirley Tyler. Their efforts, with the Cooperstown Lions Club’s years of sponsorship, the support from the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce and dozens of local businesses, and the generosity of the community including past chairs, allowed this year’s 50th anniversary to be a major success.

What makes Cooperstown such special place are the people who work and live here and I had a front-row view in seeing the hours upon hours of meetings, planning, and organization that this year’s committee put towards providing this historical event for the community. This year’s group understood the history of the carnival and the significance of this year’s anniversary celebration.

For decades, the who’s who of Cooperstown have sat on and served as a Chair of the Winter Carnival and we cannot thank them enough. In speaking with a past chair over the weekend, they remembered the day they were asked and recalled that it was “an honor.”

Despite some warmer weather this year, the 50th Winter Carnival saw some wonderful additions, such as the opener at Brewery Ommegang, the Fire & Ice bar courtesy of the Cooperstown Distillery and The Otesaga, a bounce house, and a slate of events at the Clark Sports Center. These complemented Carnival classic events like the Lip Sync Competition, pancake breakfasts, sledding, the Smullen’s Run and much more.

With all that success, the looming question over this year’s event seemed to be, who will take over as chairs for the 51st Winter Carnival in 2018? The committee is in need of volunteers. Many in the community approached me due to my role as the executive director of the Chamber and have given many wonderful suggestions for future events.

However, I think it’s important for the entire community to know that while this event was

started by the Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Cooperstown Ski Club, the Chamber acts as a home base for the event throughout the year, but not the organizers of the event.

That work is done under the guidance of the Chairs and members of the committee.

Unfortunately, the committee is losing a number of its organizers as they have put in their time to the event, and if we want this event again in 2018,

it will need dedicated volunteers.

I mention this to hopefully encourage community members to take on the role of the Winter Carnival committee and make it as revered as it once was. So once again, congratulations to the Cooperstown community and to the four chairs for the success of this year’s events. Let’s all be sure to thank them.

ith profound sadness I write that Lady Ostapeck entered eternal rest at 1 a.m. Feb. 2, 2017, just 20 days before her 99th birthday. She had stoically endured failing health for the past few months while

in Valley Health Services nursing home in Herkimer.

The care and attention she received was outstanding.

By way of recent anecdote, I can relate her fervent wish, for years, to reach 100 so that she could receive the president’s traditional centenarian congratulations. When I told her the election’s outcome, she asked “so the Please See LADY, B3

“Lady Ostapeck was a legend,” said Helen Rees, Oneonta. “When you sat for her, she would have you bring objects that were precious to you, ask you all about them, and then set up the portrait.”

“She was an exceptional women,” said Corrine Pol-

lak. “When you went in for a portrait, she had everything laid out on chairs, and by the end, you wouldn’t even know who you are!”

As she told it, Lady Ostapeck bought her Korona 4 x 5 studio view camera at the Salvation Army in Utica without knowing how to use it. “She was very spiritual,” said Vera Talevi, Cooperstown. “She always said that when she put her hands on the camera, she knew how to work it.”

And that spirituality rubbed off. “I was sitting for my portrait, talking to her, and I heard myself saying, ‘I would like to be a peasant girl looking forward to the day I become a countess,” said Vera. “I don’t know where that came from!”

“In one of my pictures, a ‘spirit’ appears to be hovering over my shoulder,” said Rees. “She said it was a spirit looking over me, and I believe her.”

Bruno also sat for her. “When she saw me, she said, ‘Bruno, you just came in from a dueling exercise with a friend and you’re tired,’” he recounted. “She got me a little glass of wine and told me to explain the details of the fencing exercise.”

The Talevis enjoyed posing for her so much that they had their sons, Steven and Robert, pose as well. “Robert went along with it and dressed as a scholar, but Steven just wanted a portrait,” said Vera.

“Years later, he brought his kids back to her, but she didn’t photograph children. He mentioned that she had photographed him, and he told her his name. And she agreed to take pictures of Jennifer and Christopher.”

Oneonta’s Helen Rees holds her mother’s portrait, which also appears in the portrait of herself on the wall taken a few years later.

All of Lady’s costumes and props were authentic. “Her whole house and barn were filled with them,” said Cooperstown’s John Ramsey.

“She always criticized modern pho-

tographers who just bought stuff out of a catalogue.

“She would say, ‘That’s not how I do it.’”

Ramsey still has the sword he used in his portrait. “She looked at me and said ‘The Count of Monte Cristo,’” he said. “She lived in a fantasy world, and she would create the whole scenario around it.”

The two became close friends, and Ramsey would often take her to lunch at The Otesaga. “She was very proud of that portrait,” he said.

“At all of her showings, it was right out in front.”

Lady was also fond of asking people about their lives and reflected their responses in the resulting portrait. “I wrote a column for The Freeman’s Journal, so I’ve got a little bird on my typewriter telling me all the news,” said Pollak.

And although she had plenty of props, she often asked her subjects to bring ones that were special to them.

“My mother and I both sat for her,” said Rees. “I brought the picture she took of my mother, a photo of Daddy” – Jim Konstanty, the Major Leaguer – “on the baseball

field and a ceramic cat from my collection. She really brought out what was special to you.”

“I was posing in front of her barn, and she asked me for something that represented me. The only thing I could think of to say was, ‘I like frogs and toads’ and I swear, it

wasn’t because I saw a frog,” said Hilda Wilcox. “Then she said, ‘look down at your feet’ and there was a toad! I picked it up and she took my picture.”

“She believed in magic,” said Wilcox. “She believed in what was beautiful.”

That wish has come true.

“Lady” Ostapeck was born on Feb. 22, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Esa and Alma Kaukinen, both of Finnish origin.

Her mother died a few days after giving birth, and her father went to the Northwest for lumbering. She was raised for two years by her mother’s sister in Brooklyn, Conn., a rural Finnish enclave.

As Lady told it, her aunt and family were murdered by a deranged axe-wielding neighbor farmer – a famed episode in the state’s northeast corner. He emerged from his barn with a hatchet, turned left and killed residents of the next several homes, then committed suicide. The baby was in the first home on the right.

After being shuffled among several Finnish families, she was adopted (formally or informally is not known) by “Mamma” Janson, a widow with a daughter Ellen in

New Jersey.

Married briefly to Peter Ostapeck, she had one son Bruce, born Aug. 27, 1940, in Englewood, N.J. Since she did not wish to remain a traditional housewife, she worked through the 1940s as a negative retoucher for studios in Manhattan, using the professional name, Alma Jordan.

Self-educated in art and design, especially by many hours in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she put her creativity to work briefly as a dress designer. Later her artistic attributes became evident in her portrait photography.

In the 1960s, she bought a farmhouse in Fly Creek to accommodate her horse and moved from New Jersey. She adopted the name “Lady” from the local appellation “Lady with Horse.”

Although she had no formal schooling in photography, she found and purchased a vintage camera at the Utica Salvation Army (Korona brand 4x5 view camera manufactured about 1910).

Each portrait sitting would take much of a day, as an individualized persona, complete with props, clothing and pose, developed cooperatively with each sitter.

Through ensuing years, Lady compiled large collections of clothing and props, mostly garnered from thrift stores and garage sales or salvaged from throwaways. She was proud to be impecunious, saying, “When you’re poor you must be more inventive to make do.”

Her son Bruce died in 2001, after which Lady, in her 80s, largely retired from doing portraiture.

Macular degeneration precluded further work in her darkroom, but did not deter her desire for independence.

Her photos and paintings have been shown widely, with over 12 exhibitions each in U.S.A. and Finland.

A founding member and Fellow in The New Pictorialist Society, many of her images were published in major photography magazines.

Her most recent four exhibits were at The Photography Center of the Capital District in Troy, as well as two huge retrospectives, one in Kotka, Finland, in 2008, and the other, year-long, in Tampere, Finland, in 2011-12.

Two video biographies have been made (by director-producer Peter Marshall in 2001, and Omonike Akinyemi in 2005) and two books of her portraits have been published by the Photography Center.

Volume 3 of her work and another exhibition are planned for late 2017. A noted author in Finland is completing a major biography for publication.

Funeral services were planned at 4 p.m Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Nick Argyros, who wrote this appreciation, is executive director of the Photography Center of the Capitol District, Troy, and a friend and longtime champion of Lady Ostapeck’s work.

The next step for Maskin is to put together a task force to tackle the challenges, including students from Hartwick College sociology classes.

“The idea is to go out and do field interviews with families and people we’ve identified as living in poverty,” said Maskin.

“We want to hear the stories behind the data.”

“Are we doing anything to get them out of poverty?” asked Council member Paul van der Sommen, First Ward, at the meeting. “Or will this money just encourage poverty to show up and we’ll take care of it?”

The goal, Maskin stressed, is for the task force to begin looking at what programs are available and where the gaps in services are.

“For instance, if someone in recovery is trying to get a job, do they have someone to help them with applications, case coordination, Medicaid paperwork?” he said. “We want to look at the pre-existing organizations, the schools, hospitals, employers and compare that to what kind of support people need and how they can get it.”

Once the needs assessment is complete, the task force will put together a plan to submit to the state. “We want to look at what the gaps are in services, as well as what long-term solutions we have to help people overcome poverty,” said Herzig.

And the mayor hopes that the initiative can work with the Downtown Revitalization Initiative. “My guess is that some of the issues will be workforce training and drug addiction, things that keep people in our area from leading productive lives and holding a job,” he said.

IN MEMORIAM Seth Samuel Elfenbein, 61, Oneonta; ‘Ambassador’ In Senior Community ONEONTA – Seth Samuel Elfenbein, 61, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, after a brief illness.

Born and raised in Oneonta, the son of the late Josef and Esther Elfenbein, Seth had moved to Pittsburgh, Pa., a few years ago to be closer to his late sister, Saralouise Reis, and enjoyed many good friendships at Schenley Gardens, his senior living community.

He loved to speak of his volunteer role as “resident ambassador” there, help-

ing new tenants adjust to their new home by showing them the ropes from the resident’s point of view. He was so proud to have served as president of the facility’s Resident’s Council and once his term ended, was happy to provide assistance when needed.

While in Oneonta he worked for several years as a greeter at Ames Department Store and carried many fond memories of helping Ames’ shoppers.

DAVENPORT – Anna N. McCulley, 87, who worked in Oneonta clothing factories, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home, Stamford.

Born on Feb. 2, 1930, in Cairo, Greene County, Anna was the daughter of the late Leslie and Hattie (Matthews) McLain. She married the Anna late John G. McCulley “Jack” McCulley on Sept. 21, 1947.

Anna worked as a machine operator for the former Oneonta Dress Factory and retired from Sanyo’s Clothing Co in Oneonta.

She is survived by her children: Jacky and Bill Fingar, Jr., Bert and Chuck Barringer Jr., Gary and Dawn McCulley, and Wayne McCulley; 12 grandchildren, six greatgrandchildren; one brother Don McLain and wife Carol and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents and husband, Anna was predeceased by a brother: Wallace McLain; and a sister: Minnie Huck.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Charlotte Valley Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Carol Wilson officiating.

He was predeceased by two brothers, John L. Frisbee Jr. and Ralph P. Frisbee leaving Susan Leidy and Trish Frisbee surviving sister-in-laws.
