County Plans Budget Airing Next Monday COOPERSTOWN

he public hearing on the proposed 2017 Otsego County budget will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at the County Office Building.

The hearing will follow a 3 p.m. work session by the full county Board of Representatives.

The $1.6 million budget includes a $11.4 million local tax levy, up 0.4 percent from this year. Taxes are expected to be stable.

Taylor Foreman, John Gibson Marry In Otesaga Ceremony

aylor Foreman and John Gibson were united in marriage Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, on the lawn of The Otesaga, overlooking Otsego Lake. The bride’s uncle, Michael Sobrado, officiated.

The bride is the daughter of Todd and Kiki Foreman of Oneonta. The groom is the son of Doug and Jacqueline Gibson of Oneonta, both deceased.

Flower girls were Taylor’s cousins, Claire Foreman, Allison Rambo, Rachel Rambo and Ciara Sobrado. The ring bearer, Mathew Rambo, is also Taylor’s cousin.

Brothers of the bride and groom, Aaron Foreman and Chris Gibson, served as official witnesses.

The bride and groom began dating in high school. Both graduated from Oneonta High School, Class of 2009.

Taylor went on to graduate from SUNY Oneonta, summa cum laude, in the Class 2012. She was employed by the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, before recently relocating to Greensboro, N.C., where the couple is residing.

John graduated from Siena College, Class of 2012 and the University of North Carolina Law School in 2016. He is associate counsel for Tanger Outlets.

A brunch reception followed at The Otesaga.

OHS Junior Chase In National Choir

HS Junior Cappagnia-Lynne Chase was invited to perform as part of the All-National Conference mixed choir at the National Association For Music Education’s annual conference in Grapevine, CappagniaTexas.

Lynne Chase In 10th grade, she received a 99 on a level six NYSSMA solo, which made her eligible for the All-State Choir in Rochester. From there, she was selected to send in a videotaped audition for the All-National Conference, and was selected as one of 672 students in June.

From Nov 10-13, she performed in the mixed choir under the director of Anton Armstrong, professor of music at St, Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

Chase plans on attending SUNY Oneonta with a major in theatre in hopes of performing on Broadway.

uzanne Janitz has been appointed to the board of Catholic Charities of Delaware, Otsego & Schoharie Counties.

Ms. Janitz is a human resources director at Hartwick College and has been a volunteer with Catholic Charities for the past five years in the mediation program. She has a strong background in human services and personnel management. Ms. Janitz lives in Mount Vision Also elected to the board was Alice (Nollet) Kane of Walton.

Catholic Charities is the human service and social justice arm of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.

In Election’s Wake, 90 Grieve, Chart Strategy For Future

STRATEGY/From A1 Presbyterian church hall at Pioneer and Church, and when mourning voters from Cooperstown, Oneonta, Otsego County and beyond showed up at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, they numbered almost 90 and filled the sizeable room.

While the gathering was mostly Democrats, “there were registered Republicans invited,” said Hardin, whose husband, a village trustee, was endorsed by both parties. “I doubt if there were any Trump supporters present.”

She characterized the gathering as “a meeting of people who are concerned that some of the issues they hold really dear are going to go down the tube – like climate change, environmental regulations, women’s rights in general, and women’s health in particular.

“With attacks on LGBT people and

Muslims, people are concerned, of course,” she said.

Injecting order into a discussion among 90 people, attendees were asked to discuss issues of concern, possible solutions, and next steps with other people at their

tables.

One spokesman for each table then reported conclusions to the general meeting.

The meeting included prominent Cooperstown Democrats like former Bassett CEO Bill Streck and his wife Karen, Village Trustees Jim Dean and Richard Sternberg, and, from as far away as Binghamton, Mary Clark representing Citizen Action of the Southern Tier, which promotes

affordable healthcare and responsive government.

That list suggests it was a gathering of “elites,” said Hardin. “This was not, by any stretch of the imagination, for the elites. A range of people shared their ideas.”

Dean and Sternberg are also Democratic County Committee members, as was attendee Tim Gibson from the Town of Oneonta.

However, Oneonta’s Deb Marcus, executive director of Family Planning of the Southern Tier, said the gathering was not a party meeting: “It was a meeting of progressive individuals and organizations. Too often, activists, individuals and organizations get in silos. It’s so important that we act together to be effective.”

Saying she agrees with “think globally, act locally,” she added, “We can make real change on the local level. We can be much more effec-

tive. We can do much more than simply contribute to national organizations.”

Added Karen Katz, Cooperstown’s first lady, “It was excellent to come together after the election and to be able to be able to talk about our concerns about how to move forward.”

She cited racism and Civil Rights in general as her particular concerns, “and, I think, moving backwards rather than moving forward.”

For his part, Democrat County Chair Richard Abbate, Cooperstown, who did not attend, said “it’s good that people want to vent, talking about the election and about change.”

He encouraged attendees from the Hardin meeting to come to the county committee meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Cooperstown Village Hall.

For his part, Abbate’s Republican counterpart, Vince Casale, also of Cooperstown, called the gathering “a bit of an overreaction. What do we do now? What we do now is very simple: We accept the results of the election. We accept who the president is. And we respect the office of the president.”

As the spokespeople reported in, the concerns and ideas were recorded, Hardin said, totaling 20 flip-chart sheets of concerns and ideas. She and her co-hostess, Jennifer Brose of Milford, will “synthesize concerns and possible action steps,” and e-mail the results to attendees.

“You may want to work on one of them or two of them – and we’ll get groups to work together,” Hardin concluded.

Non-Profits Trying Out ‘NY Gives Day’ Project GIVING/From A1 shopping,” said Susan Kurkowski, United Way of Otsego-Delaware Counties executive director. “This is a way to give back to your community.”

An extension of the national “Giving Tuesday” idea, NY Gives is the brainchild of the state Council of Non-Profits and the United Way, aimed at bringing attention to local non-profits. “There are 640 non-profits registered across the state,” she said.

Kurkowski helped connect more than 15 local non-profits to the site, where donors can give gifts during the 24-hour window without having to any fees. “It’s a very easy way to donate,” she said. “Times are changing, and with social media, it’s making it easier to spread the word and raise these donations.”

Locally, the Greater Oneonta Historical Society is taking part.

“We’re giving people options to donate to either the General Fund, which funds programs, our shop and awards, the 150th Year Fund or the Building Fund,” said Beth Steele, a GOHS board member and Hartwick College’s director of advancement communications.

“We want to be open-minded and connect with donor interests.”

Orpheus Theatre is also on the list, with donations going towards musical theatre workshops for children and teens, the youth theatre troupe and the annual performances.

Hartwick College was one of the first local entities to get involved in Giving Tuesday, three

“Now we use it to shine a light on alumni who are active in non-profits,” said Steele. “It’s our way of thanking them.”

And after Susquehanna Animal Shelter took in 36 cats found in a deteriorating home in West Oneonta, donations are needed more than ever. “We have almost 100 cats and 22 dogs,” said the shelter’s Becca Daly. “We’ve been given donations of food, litter and garbage bags, but all of these animals need medical care, and donations are hugely helpful in paying those bills.”

This Thanksgiving, Reflect On National Challenges Overcome

H

ere’s something to worry about.

You and 101 others – 40 of you Pilgrims – sail across the rough Atlantic on the 100-footlong Mayflower. Wintering on board, 56 of your fellow passengers die. In April, the ship sails back to England, leaving you and the other survivors amid strangers in an unknown land.

By luck, your small colony encounters Samoset, an Englishspeaking Pawtuxet, who helps you form an alliance with the local Wampanoags, who help you plant crops.

You work, you pray and, that fall, “by the goodness of God,” your fellow Pilgrim, Edward Winslow, writes back to friends in England, “we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”

That was a highpoint, of course.

Privations aplenty, fallings out with the natives and subsequent wars, and other challenges follow.

Yet, despite your many human failings and those of your fellow settlers, foundations of what today is the world’s oldest democracy are laid; freedom of belief and conscience in particular.

(By the way, 150 years later, with the Iroquois quelled during the American Revolution, your descendants flooded out of over-populated New England into Otsego County.)

• Sure, Donald Trump’s election was a surprise. But it’s too early to really tell how awful he may be – or not.

There can be some reassurance in President Reagan’s second term, where seasoned people around him kept the Ship of State on a steady course despite his advancing Alzheimer’s.

Most worrisome about the new president is whether his offhanded attitude toward nuclear armaments in the campaign will continue into the Trump Administration, or whether the awesome responsibility for the future of mankind will fully take hold.

Short of the world’s destruction, all things shall pass.

The point is, all is not lost, and the future very well may be bright.

grew up in a small town in Rhode Island and am the youngest of seven children. I have five brothers and one sister. I am convinced that growing up with five older brothers caused me to form broad shoulders and thick skin, qualities that have become assets in my life today.

Before I was born, my father left my mother with all seven children in what must have been an impossible situation for me to imagine even to this day. She only had a high school education at the time, and it became

quite clear that if she was going to be able to keep her family together she would need to go to college and get an education.

When I think about her going to school fulltime and raising seven children I am awe-inspired and confused

at the same time about how she was able to manage under such pressure.

I have one child and am a full-time student working parttime, and certain days I feel that all my managing could fall around my feet. So I can’t even imagine doing it with seven children.

With that being said, she completed her college education and raised all us children with a registered nursing license. I guess perseverance, dedication and hard work are engrained in my makeup, set by the example of my mother.

A Chinese student who was de-pledged by a chapter of Psi Upsilon Fraternity at Northwestern University two weeks ago has been made an “honorary pledge” by that fraternity’s chapter at the University of Rochester. Sherman Wu was de-pledged by the Epsilon Omega chapter at Northwestern when eight other pledges dropped out of the fraternity because of Wu’s nationality. Wu is the son of K.C. Wu, former governor of Formosa.

U.S. Attorney-General Brownell today summoned federal prosecutors in fourteen southern states to a Washington D.C. Conference on how to carry out the U.S. Supreme Court’s decree against racial segregation on buses.

Brownell’s letter said that it is clear from the decision of November 13 on the Montgomery, Alabama segregation case, that discrimination against bus passengers on account of race is a “crime against the United States.”

G. Henry Stratton whose death at 4:30 a.m. last Thursday literally kept his pledge “to fast as long as Succi or never go back to Cortland alive.” The length of Stratton’s actual fast was 37 days. By that time he had grown so weak he had to take to his bed. Then, the physicians held a consultation and decided that Stratton must have some stimulant.

Two teaspoons of champagne were ordered. Stratton nearly cried when compelled to take this, for it ended his fast. He grew so much worse that he was taken to Bellevue on Tuesday and placed on the alcoholic ward. The autopsy showed that death resulted from cerebral congestion, caused by alcohol, with fatty degeneration of the heart as a contributory cause. Born in Brooklyn, Stratton was for several years proprietor of a restaurant in Oneonta and later a hotel keeper at Cortland.

Oneonta shoppers and retailers agreed that the “Black Friday” start to the holiday shopping season was a success.

The Southside Mall parking lot was nearly full and the big stores such as J.C. Penney and Wal-Mart were crowded with shoppers. Did this year’s floods dampen the holiday spirit and empty the pocketbooks? Apparently not. Bonnie Perry of Bainbridge, who was shopping for DVDs for her grandchildren, said that although several family members were hit, “they’re back on their feet.” Southside Mall manager Jessica Dombrowski said the mall had opened at 5 a.m. with almost all stores participating. An estimated 100 people were waiting in line.

ast night I watched a short video on BBC that I believe is a perfect illustration how truly lucky we are.

In this video, a reporter is attempting to interview an independent candidate for election in China. As he walked up to the door, 20 or so men, presumably operatives of the Commu-

nist government, blocked his way.

When the candidate tried to open the door to shout the interview over the men, they slammed the door in her face. Then, when she tried yelling out the window, they placed a large piece of foam over the window.

More men began to show up. They put their hands over the lenses of the BBC cameras and began to assault the reporter, telling him to get lost.

That story gave me the chills. I could not imagine living in an environment like that.

Remember that we are extremely lucky to live in the most free and democratic nation in the world. Remember that the world looks to us for guidance and how we act after an election sets a precedent for democracy all over the globe.

To my fellow Republicans I say this: We won. Celebration and joy is natural and expected. DO NOT confuse mockery and insults with these.

Be respectful and remember, it could have easily been the other way around.

To my Democratic compatriots I say: You lost. But, you fought hard, and with fiery passion in your hearts.

I know what it’s like to be on the losing side both in 2012 and the gubernatorial race in 2014. It’s not fun.

In the end we are ALL one nation.

We are ALL Americans under one American flag. In the words of President Obama, “We are not two different teams, we are one team playing an intramural scrimmage.”

The scrimmage is over, and it’s time for the team to get back together to take part in the betterment of our beloved country.

‘We Need To Build Up ... Not Tear Down’

very single one of us has been hurt in our lifetime.

Every single one of us has been unhappy with the outcome of an election.

Every single one of us has said or done something out of anger, fear, or hate that we have regretted.

We can’t control who hurts us or who wins an election, but we can control how we react.

Our country has already endured a Civil War, and this planet has already seen two World Wars.

The last thing this earth needs is more suffering. Suffering that we can choose to either inflict or prevent.

Do we all have the same views on all issues? No, of course not. But we all believe that everyone in this country is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

We have to build each other up, not tear each other down. We have to provide constructive criticism that leads to positive change instead of violently attacking each other’s ideas.

We need to have the ability to respectfully disagree with each other and not let our differences get in the way of achieving social progress.

Many Examples Point To Fundamental Change In Fossil-Fuel Industry ALLSTADT/From A4 full S&P500 index. Over the past one, three, five, and 10-year periods, the FFIUS Index outperformed the full S&P500 Index. This index prompted some of the Cooperstown village trustees’ early questions about fossil fuels to our adviser, but there was no ETF-type investment vehicle available that would allow investors to buy the FFIUS index without incurring very high fees. Nevertheless, the FFIUS index does demonstrate that fossil fuels have been a drag on the returns of the full S&P500 for some time.

Second, Mr. Russell implies that I concocted a report after the fact. The description of the deliberative process that resulted in selling the S&P500 and buying the S&P 500 excluding fossil fuels was a summary of discussions at various village committee and board meetings beginning in early 2015 and culminating in discussions at August, September and October 2016 meetings of the Economic Development & Sustainability Committee, the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees. All of the trustees and the mayor have confirmed that my description was accurate.

Furthermore, during my tenure on the board of trustees, I can recall no other decision amounting to approximately $10,000 that has received this much attention. The trustees did their job.

Lastly, I agree with the editor’s headline. Experts do disagree on the

budgets that will further add to the long-term fiscal challenges that we face as a Nation;…

future performance of fossil fuels.

There are essentially two camps. One says the fossil-fuel industry is just in another down cycle, and all will be well when oil and gas prices recover.

The other says that there are fundamental changes underway that will make it difficult for fossil fuels to fully recover.

Mr. Russell seems to prefer the “just another cycle” approach. He presents reports in the Wall Street Journal on buy or hold recommendations by stock market analysts. Most of these analyst reports are for shortterm actions, speculating which way an individual stock’s price will move near term. When stock price moves far enough in one direction, those same analysts reverse their advice.

Such reports help speculators move their money from one stock to another. They are hardly relevant to long-term investments of pension funds that will be needed many years

in the future.

There are a number of signs that pressure is building to reduce the use of fossil fuels, and those pressures are not limited to tree-hugging environmentalists. For example, here are excerpts from a resolution proposed to the House of Representatives in September of 2015 by Representative Chris Gibson and co-sponsored by Representative Richard Hanna (both of whom represent districts covered by this newspaper) and 13 other Republican representatives: “…Whereas, if left unaddressed, the consequences of a changing climate have the potential to adversely impact all Americans, hitting vulnerable populations hardest, harming productivity in key economic sectors such as construction, agriculture, and tourism, saddling future generations with costly economic and environmental burdens, and imposing additional costs on State and Federal

Resolved, That the House of Representatives commits to working constructively, using our tradition of American ingenuity, innovation, and exceptionalism, to create and support economically viable, and broadly supported private and public solutions to study and address the causes and effects of measured changes to our global and regional climates, including mitigation efforts and efforts to balance human activities that have been found to have an impact.

In 2015, CitiCorp’s Global Perspectives and Solutions Unit came out with a lengthy report entitled “ENERGY DARWINISM II: Why a Low-Carbon Future Doesn’t Have to Cost the Earth.” The report concludes that the the cost of addressing climate change by reducing fossil fuel use and improving energy efficiency will be less than the cost of dealing with flooding of coastal cities, droughts, population displacement and other costs that are likely if action is not taken to address climate change. “Given that all things being equal cleaner air has to be preferable to pollution, a very strong “Why would you not?” argument begins to develop.”

Very recently, the chief financial officer of Shell made news by stating,

“We’ve long been of the opinion that demand will peak before supply. And that peak may be somewhere between five and 15 years hence, and it will be driven by efficiency and substitution, more than offsetting the new demand for transport.” Until now, it was steadily increasing demand that drove this industry’s profitability and stock prices. Here is a senior person inside the industry saying that demand growth for the key transportation fuel sector will soon peak because of efficiencies and substitution of alternative fuels.

The foregoing are just a few examples of that would have been unheard of only a few years ago.

There are many more examples that point toward fundamental changes in the fossil-fuel industry. There are also examples of large fund and institutional investment directors guiding their investment managers away from fossil fuels. Should the Village stand by and watch while large funds and foundations divest? These examples, combined with the weakened financial condition of most fossil fuel companies, which I covered two weeks ago, make the outlook for a cyclical type recovery very doubtful.

If Mr. Russell wishes to continue this exchange, I am happy to oblige.

Or, we could perhaps give the readers a break and try to convince one another over a cup of coffee.

Leaving Unused Pills In Household Medicine Cabinets Put Teens In Harm’s Way PILLS/From A4 individuals I do not know talking about how my life fell dangerously off track? I think for most of us, life has a funny way of unfolding in ways we never could have imagined, sometimes in good ways and sometimes in terrible ways.

When I was 16 years old, my world and how I viewed it collapsed. My second oldest brother Lance, who was a pharmaceutical student in his last semester of college at the University of Rhode Island, was found deceased in his bed by my third oldest brother. This devastated my family on every level, as I’m sure you can all imagine or perhaps have seen in your own lives when death comes suddenly and swiftly.

It was not long after the passing of Lance that my mother chose to move back to Upstate New York, a place she had lived for many years before I was born and felt that we could start re-building our lives here.

Big life changes like this happen every day, I suppose, in teenagers’ lives all of the time, but it was my responses to such transitions that are the cause for the alarm. At 16 years old, I found myself in a place where I knew no one, in a new school, full of grief and with a very small amount of coping skills that did no justice to the amount of pain I was in during at the time.

I guess it is no surprise that I was seeking some kind of outlet, maybe a little relief from the pressure and uncertainty of the world around me. I had been exposed to low-level street drugs (if there is even such a thing) in Rhode Island by some of my older peers around me and quickly realized that the escape I was so desperately seeking could be found in unguarded left-over medication in medicine cabinets.

Most of the time this action went unnoticed and left me to be in a situation with large quantities of medications that can have deadly consequences if mixed together.

In light of these circumstances, it really is a miracle that I am standing here today alive and able to tell the story. I have seen many individuals be

in this same situation as I was and not live to tell the tale.

So, while my fellow peers were busying themselves with college applications and job opportunities that would come after graduation, I was starting down a path that turned out to be one of the darkest times in my life. It was this point in my life that the escalation of my drug use took root and set me on a path that I would not be able to walk out of for another eight years.

I think it is safe to say that there is not one person in this room who is unaware of the consequences of addiction. If you have not experienced it first hand, then perhaps you have seen it in your daughters and sons, aunts and uncles, siblings or parents.

The addict is not someone that lives out there far away from us, or a myth. They are real people, sometimes liv-

ing in our homes, sometimes checking us out at the store, sometimes passing us on the street unnoticed and anonymous.

Addiction is a real thing happening all around the country in small and big cities alike, and most of us have conceded that this social issue will not be eradicated over night, but instead it will take perseverance and dedication like the

example being set here today.

The real difference and change comes when members of our community form a partnership in an effort to fight prescription drug misuse and walk hand in hand saying, yes, we understand the circumstance. What action can we take to find a solution?

Miller was rarely known to miss a game, and despite suddenly snowy conditions Monday evening, Nov. 21, friends and donors gathered to honor Miller, who died Oct. 25, 2014, in naming Hartwick’s new locker rooms in his memory.

“I would often see Dick at games, and college sports were very important to him,” said Dr. Margaret Drugovich, Hartwick president. “Within 48 hours of his untimely death, trustee Robert Spadaccia, Class of ’70, asked that his own very generous gift, given in support of the renovation of the men’s locker room, provide for the naming of the ‘Dick Miller Memorial Locker Room’,” The locker renovation was part of a $1 million upgrade of

the Binder Physical Education Center, raised as part of the $34.7 million Campaign for Hartwick Students.

“If Dick had been with us this past June, as we beat our goal by $2.7 million, he would have been very pleased,” said Drugovich. “And then he would have said to me, ‘What’s next?’ Because that’s the kind of person he was.”

Miller served as the president of the college from 200308 and oversaw the design and construction of Golisano Hall.

“In five short years as president, Dick Miller led efforts to improve the college experience for generations of future Hartwick students,” said Larry Malone, economics professor and former Common Council member under Miller. “His passion was always greatest when it came to improving the

lives of student athletes. Given his love for the college, it is fitting that the men’s locker room complex will now bear his name.”

“The way he always talked about Hartwick Athletics was very positive” said Kim Fierke, director of athletics. “Having his name on this locker room will allow the impact he had on all of us to continue.”

“He was passionate,” said Rick Eastman of Eastman Associates, the construction firm, and a pal of Miller’s.

“You knew he was at a game because you could hear him yelling across the field or the court, harassing refs if he thought they made a bad call, and laughing about it.”

After he left Hartwick, Miller ran for mayor and served until his passing. “He loved Oneonta, but being

mayor didn’t change his love for Hartwick,” said Eastman.

“Seeing how much he loved this college inspired Michelle and I to get involved.”

All the locker and team rooms in the Binder Physical Education Center were

upgraded with new lockers and private showers, paint, wall and tile, and a 10’ x 25’ wall mural highlighting Hartwick men’s athletics.

“This is fitting, given his love of sports,” said Dave Lubbell, Media Relations Manager at the college.

The Dick Miller Memorial Locker Complex is also the home of the Calvin W. Chase

’71 Men’s Soccer Team Room, the Dale L. Rothenberg Swimming & Diving Team Room, and the Mary S. ’73 and Neal K. ’72 Miller Men’s Basketball Team Room.

These rooms, also named as part of the Campaign, received upgrades including flat screen televisions, custom wood lockers, and rubber flooring.

Last year, the mall was opened at 6 p.m. for shoppers to get ahead of Black Friday deals. In 2013, the mall offered a “midnight madness” event, opening at 6 p.m. and staying open all night.

“It’s a big change,” she said.

“But in speaking with our customers, many of them said that they don’t like it when stores are open on Thanksgiving.”

Previously, Montanti had closed the mall in 2014, and noticed that it didn’t cut into sales as much as retailers had feared.

“A lot of Black Friday shoppers go out of town,” she said. “We have a great selection locally, but there are places we can’t compete with. And if it’s not going to make that big of a difference, we’d rather see these people home with their families.”

It’s a trend that’s catching on nationwide, with more than 50 nationwide retailers opting to give their employees the day off. TJ Maxx, one of the mall’s flagship stores, has never been opened during the Thanksgiving hours.

And although the mall and TJ Maxx will be closed, J.C. Penney and Dick’s Sporting Goods, which have their own outside entrances, will be open, starting at 3 p.m. Dick’s will close at 2 a.m. Friday morning and re-open when the mall opens at 6 a.m. Friday, Nov. 25, and J.C. Penney will remain open until the 9 p.m. closing time Friday.

“At JC Penney, the manager is making a full Thanksgiving dinner for the employees,” said Montanti. “It’s a way that they can enjoy the holiday together.”

The mall will open at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, with specials and deals to kick off the holiday season. “There are plenty of other days for shoppers,” said Montanti. “Thanksgiving needs to be a time for family.”

The carcasses – filled with lead shot – would have been a tasty treat for scavenging golden eagles, who feast, absorb the lead, become disoriented and die.

Salo knows his raptors, becoming entranced when, age 12, his parents took him on a picnic to Harriman State Park near the family’s Pearl River home and several hundred hawks flew over, migrating south from their summer homes in Canada’s Maritime Provinces.

After a year at SUNY Potsdam, he took up the trade of skilled machinist and met-

alworker, working in Binghamton and living in southern Cortland County. In the early 1980s, his parents bought a retirement home in the rural Town of Burlington, which came with an option on the farm next door.

He and wife Jo – the two had known each other since high school in Rockland County – came up in 1982 to take a look, and they bit.

Finding the neighborhood a bit too rural, the parents moved into Oneonta in the mid-‘80s. By then, the younger couple had bought the adjoining land and built a house.

(Jessica is now a geography professor at Northern Colorado State; Kris married a French national and they are raising two children in France, where he imports 1950s’ diner-era U.S. memorabilia, very collectible in France right now.)

Tom got involved in the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society, working with Andy Mason of Jefferson to found the Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch & Sanctuary, overlooking Oneonta. The beauty and strength of golden eagles, in particular, capture Salo’s interest.

In 2014, Salo, the DEC, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and a number of academics began outfitting golden eagles with solar-powered GPS units that report back every 15 minutes.

Since, from the PC in the sunny front room of his rural home, Salo’s been able to see the data points, one by one, chart a huge flyway from – in Marie’s case (more on her later) – the strait into Hudson Bay near Ivujivik, the

northern tip of Quebec, down the St. Lawrence and across Otsego and Delaware counties to northern Pennsylvania.

On this long migration, eagles often pause, perhaps to feed in a leisurely fashion on a deer’s lead-filled entrails left behind by a hunter.

That’s why researchers, as early as 1985, had found elevated lead levels in golden, as well as bald, eagles.

The result: permanent brain damage. “It makes it so they can’t function, they can’t scavenge, they can’t hunt,” said Salo. And so they die.

At the beginning of this year, the DOAS began imple-

menting a $20,000 grant from the American Eagle Foundation (underwritten by the Dollywood theme park in Tennessee) to convince hunters to shift to non-lead ammo.

(OCCA is administering the grant.)

Lead-filled bullets explode on impact, scattering the poisonous metal throughout a carcass, Salo explained.

Copper bullets remain intact.

Only 5 percent of hunters use non-lead ammunition.

To help shift public opinion, Salo’s working group contracted with Joe Stillman, the Oneonta videographer, who is prepared a short video

to show how lead is damaging the iconic birds.

Salo and two other DOAS volunteers, Mike and Peg DiBenedetto, are doing radio interviews, and speaking to hunter groups and, last month, at a conference at SUNY Cobleskill.

But it’s been a hard sell, Tom said. The New York SAFE Act, passed by the state Legislature in the days following the Sandy Hook massacre, has made Upstate hunters suspicious: Is this about eagles? Or is there a hidden agenda? To regulate ammunition, and then prohibit it?

Curiously, or perhaps not so curiously, the data points on Tom Salo’s computer screen make the relationship between birdwatcher and bird more personal, more intimate.

He speaks fondly of Marie, and worried when she paused along the Northway – a highrisk neighborhood – for several days over the summer.

“She’s like an adolescent daughter engaging in highrisk behavior,” he said.

And then there was Greg, who Tom tracked daily for 15 months – March 2014 to June 2015 – between New Lisbon and Labrador before his signal suddenly stopped along the St. Lawrence.

Then word came from Quebec: feeding on bait, Greg had been snapped in a bear trap.

Though she had been expected to attend the premier, she suffered a stroke on Nov. 8 while watching election returns.

Jones, who grew up in Brooklyn, lived part-time in Sharon Springs with her friend, Megan Holken, manager of the Beekman Boys. “I used to work with her boyfriend 25 years ago, and when he would come visit me, he would bring her,” she said. “When I moved up here 15 years ago, she started coming to stay with me. It was her home off the road.”

So much so, that Jones stayed with Holken while undergoing chemotherapy for Stage 2 pancreatic cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2013.

“She could be herself when she was up here,” said Holken.

was sick, many didn’t know how sick she was. “I’m undergoing chemo, and she would ask me how I was doing,” said Daou. “It was so Sharon, and so sweet.”

But last week, when members of the Dap-Kings came in to order boxes of cookies and muffins, Daou knew something was wrong. “I got nervous,” he said. “But you always hope for a miracle.”

Holken was by Jones’ bedside when she passed away. “I was holding her hand,” she said.

A memorial in New York City is planned for a later date. “We’ve lost her, but we can just pick up a record and hear her again,” said Daou.

“She will become as indelible a part of our holiday memories as hanging ornaments on the tree,” said Ridge.

“For all those who loved her and appreciated her music, just find her song ‘Big Bulbs’ and put a smile on your face.”

IN MEMORIAM Rev. John A. Blackman, 84; Edmeston Leader EDMESTON – The Rev. John A. Blackman, Jr., the award-winning and community-minded pastor emeritus of the Second Baptist Church, Edmeston, passed away Nov. 20, 2016.

He was born Aug. 31, 1932 in Rockland, Maine, to John A. Blackman and Olive Kalloch Blackman.

He married Dorothy Loyte in June 1955.

John served the First Baptist Church of Oswegatchie,

in the North Country, from June 1958 to January 1964, where he was ordained into the ministry. He then was called to the Second Baptist Church, and served from February 1964 to September 1994.

He was a member of the Edmeston Volunteer Fire Department, an advanced EMT on the emergency squad and a substitute teacher at Edmeston Central School. He founded the

first senior citizens’ group in Edmeston, originally called The Evergreens.

He and New York Central Rev. John A. Mutual’s Van Ness Blackman, Jr. Robinson made possible the first of Bassett Healthcare’s off-site clinics. They also established the hamlet’s lowincome housing complex, West Hill Terrace.

John was a long-time member of the Edmeston Rotary Club and served one year as president. He was honored to be chosen as a Paul Harris Fellow. The club also proclaimed Oct. 24, 1998 as John Blackman Day for “making a difference”.

He received the Dewitt Clinton Masonic Award for community service and was the Grange’s Citizen of the Year. He was chosen to be Edmeston’s representative at the Otsego County’s Bicentennial celebration.

Ellen L. Bush, 70; Home Ec Teacher LAURENS - Ellen Louise Bush, 70, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown.

She was born August 26, 1946 in Oneonta, the daughter of Bernard and Cora (Bebe) Bullis.

Ellen graduated from Otego Central School and received her bachelors degree from SUNY Oneonta.

She married Donald R. Bush on June 12, 1965 at the First Baptist Church in Oneonta.

Ellen was a substitute Home Economics teacher at Oneonta High School and the Utica school district.

She was employed for many years at Planned Parenthood in Oneonta.

She was the President of the Laurens American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and while living in Arizona for 11 years was active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Donald R. Bush of Laurens; her two sons, DJ (Tisha) Bush of Otego and Jim Bush of Otego; grandchildren, Nicholas, Tamara, Renee and Corey; 1 great-grandson, Damien; 3 sisters, Elizabeth (Bill) Spade of Illinois, Donna (Bill) Gravelin of Laurens and Susan (Charles) Fix of Pennsylvania; many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was predeceased by her parents.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Laurens American Legion, 176 Main St., Laurens, with a reception to follow.

A private burial will take place at the Laurens Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home.

He was a director of the Edmeston Free Library Board for 34 years, vice president for several. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Otsego Mutual Insurance Co. For many years, patients at Bassett Hospital were only ministered to by local clergy, then John and other committee members hired the hospital’s first chaplain.

In his later years of ministry the ABCNY asked him to mentor a group of new pastors in several associations.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy, and his children, David Blackman, Edmeston, Deborah DeForest, Norwich, and Karen Blackman, New Berlin. as well as daughterin-law Ruth Blackman and son-in-law Michael Shuman, seven grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by his daughter Kathy Shuman, of Beaver Meadow.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Houk Johnston Terry Funeral Home.

Maureen Agnes Gallagher, 63; Hartwick Math Prof For 22 Years ONEONTA – Maureen Agnes Gallagher, 63, 22year Hartwick College mathematics professor and a lifelong Oneonta resident, died on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, after an extended illness.

She was born May 10, 1953, at Fox Hospital, the daughter of John J. and Catherine M. Gallagher.

Maureen was a graduate of Bugbee School and a proud “Bugbee Brat,” having attended from Junior Kindergarten through ninth grade. She graduated from Oneonta High School with honors in 1971, received a bachelor’s in mathematics from William Smith College in 1975 and a master’s in mathematics from SUNY Oneonta.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a past board member of Catholic Charities and volunteered at St. Mary’s food bank.

Maureen is survived by her mother, Catherine M. Gallagher of Oneonta; her brother, Dr. John W. Gallagher and his wife, Barbara, of Plattsburgh; and her

sister, Jean E. and her husband, Robert B. Hobkirk, of Oneonta; nieces and nephews Sean M. (Paula) GalMaureen lagher of Gallagher Baltimore, Md., Catherine L. Hobkirk (Andrew Hathaway) of Oneonta, Cara J. (Kenneth) Mussaw of Otego, and Robert W. (Ashu) Hobkirk of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was predeceased by her father, John J. Gallagher, in 2000 and her nephew, Patrick J. Gallagher, in 2012.

A funeral mass was given Monday, Nov. 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Maureen’s name to Oneonta Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 1083, Oneonta, NY 13820 Arrangements are entrusted to the Lewis, Hurley and Pietrobono Funeral Home.
