ick Chase, a Hartwick College student and Oneonta native, will challenge freshman Assemblyman John Salka, R-121, whose district includes Oneonta and Cooperstown.

“I want an opportunity to help solve the issues that plague our district,” Chase said. “We need someone young and new to politics to step up and take a different

approach to the status quo, as it is apparent that the older and traditional ‘leadership’ our district has seen is not working for us.”

A life-long resident of greater Oneonta, Nick graduated from Franklin Central School in 2018, and then went on to study chemistry at Hartwick College.

D ear Friends and Family, So often we speak of love when we speak of our

heart being stolen, of our breath being taken away. My own story took the darkest of turns in my fight with Lyme disease, which literally stole my heart and might very well have permanently taken my breath away.

Lyme disease meant seven years of my life hanging by a thread but with a brave face and a smile carrying me through. After all, there was nothing to fear but fear itself. So many of you prayed and were by my side in some of my darkest hours, that interminable waiting for a new heart in what sometimes felt like a terminus to the joy of my own life. My husband and family, you sustained me in spirit. To all of the medical personnel who believed in me and saved my life, I must say this: with all of you on my side and by my side, how could I doubt a hopeful outcome? You all sustained me with your love and care, and I am deeply grateful for how you carried me through then and since March 3, 2019, the day that I began to live again.

Grateful, overwhelmed, and blessed were all the feelings that swirled within me.

Someone else generously gave a precious gift with the end of their life so that mine could begin anew, and I was surrounded still with the most incredible warmth of care and compassion as I came to learn to live again with my same soul but a new heart.

program, and a lot of people said that really stretched the audience,” said Zimniewicz.

“And with Żółtowski, how do you not like Tchaikovsky?

Plus, he and Silas’ soloists, that they had the contacts to bring that kind of talent here.”

Zimniewicz and the search committee will meet and look over the surveys handed out at the end of each performance to rank and rate the conductors in the areas of preshow talk, program selection, and whether the conductor engaged the musicians.

“We’ll analyze their strengths and weaknesses,” she said. “We’ll compare each of those to the other candidates, and we’ll put the results onto a graph.”

From there, they will also look at the surveys completed by the musicians, which, Zimniewicz said, will carry more weight than the audience surveys.

“All three were great candidates,” said Ana Laura Gonzalez, piccolo. “We all have our favorites, but no matter which one gets picked, we’ll have a strong conductor.”

She praised Huff’s “personable” nature and detail-oriented conducting, Watson’s “bravery” in her selections and Żółtowski’s attentiveness to the orchestra.

On Saturday, Nov. 16, Maciej Żółtowski, the third finalist for the conductor position, conducted Stanisław Moniuszko’s “Concert Overture: The Fairy Tale” and two pieces by Tchaikovsky.

Though he had fallen on ice on the SUNY Oneonta campus and dislocated his elbow just days before, he still managed to conduct with both hands.

But with all conductors finished with their concert auditions, the difficult task of deciding who will take the CSO’s baton begins.

“Each of the conductors brought something different to the podium,” said Laurie Zimniewicz, search committee chair. “But in all cases, we saw the musicians stepping up to the plate and putting out incredible music.”

On Saturday, Sept. 7, Silas Huff conducted “The Firebird,” and on Saturday, Oct. 12, Carolyn Watson conducted “The Elements: Rhythm, Melody and Form.”

Citizens, Cooperstown Needs You: Run For Village Board

In the past few months, the Cooperstown Village Board’s default response to any traffic issue has been, put up a blinking light. After a driver rolled his car through the boat ramp at the end of Fair Street April 11 and drowned, suddenly a blinking red light appeared at Fair and Lake streets.

At the Sept. 23 trustees’ meeting, Viek, attending

with a crowd of perturbed neighbors, reported the light was blinking, blinking, blinking all night long on his bedroom wall.

Plus, because of the nature of the drowning – the first ever at the site – a blinking light wouldn’t have saved a life.

In Death, Companion Dog Brought Out Best In People To the Editor: The compassion and quick response of Good Samaritans makes a story of loss and grief bittersweet.

Pace was a guide dog trained to assist and lead people who are blind and visually impaired around obstacles found in daily life.

Pace was Ken’s dog.

There are over 80 million working service dogs in America, but Pace definitely led the pack. He was a beautiful Golden Retriever.

You may have met Pace and Ken on one of their walks on Main Street or maybe

you shared a ride with them on an OPT bus.

Pace was extremely intelligent. He knew all the OPT buses by name. Ken would tell Pace which bus he wanted to ride, and even if the bus line up was out of order that day, his dog always led him to the right one. During the weekly shopping trips, Pace would listen to Ken’s requests and know which aisle to go to and where to stop for the item.

Ken trusted his dog completely. Pace remained quietly aware of everything in their surrounding envi-

ronment. As they traveled together, he helped Ken cross streets and safely navigated the sidewalks, alert to any obstacles. Pace’s service training ensured Ken’s independence, but it was their friendship that meant the most. Spending every hour of every day together, they developed a bond that was as strong as any.

One morning, Ken and Pace hopped on the OPT bus to Southside. There was Christmas shopping to start and Pace was looking forward to stocking up on carrots – his favorite treat. It was a typical day.

Pace seemed to be feeling good. Then, just as they were completing their shopping, Pace looked like he

ast time we talked, I described the start of a major teenage crisis: when I knocked a nun flat on on her face, and then sat on her.

To summarize: During halftime of our high school’s basketball team, I was selling candy and gum in the hallway just outside the gym to raise money for new uniforms. I was sitting on the edge of rickety table, and a young nun (my homeroom teacher!) was standing by me to keep order as I sold my goods.

As someone always says after a mishap, “It all happened so quickly!”

Blare of a horn signaled that second quarter had ended. Gym doors burst outward, and a roiling teenage crowd poured into the hallway, most of them

turning right and toward our table.

That table was in poor shape, shaky, and I shouldn’t have been sitting on its edge. But I was a young smart aleck, showing JIM off. Sister Mary Aphasia (I’m ATWELL cloaking her real name) stepped backward as the crowd surged toward us, and (dare I say it?) through all the black serge, a buttock pressed into my bony knee.

Something like electric shock

struck me. My bony knee kicked backward and took out the table leg. I was dumped forward, knocking Sister Aphasia face-down in the horrified crowd. And I, limbs flailing, came to rest, cushioned on what I’d first contacted only seconds before.

At first the shocked crowd fell back, as if what lay on the floor was a bomb about to explode. Then two classmates grabbed my arms and yanked me up. I blundered into the crowd, praying to be suddenly cockroach size so I could skitter away through the scuffling white bucks and sneakers.

Disunity’s As American As Apple Pie Vs. Cherry Pie

he press says we live in an era of unprecedented political division. The amplification of every tweet may make it seem so, but there is a different view of the severity of our polarization.

The American Revolution saw Loyalists interested in compromises to LARRY prevent war, but BENNETT colonists seeking independence who were not. Anyone trying to effect compromise or be neutral was suspected of Loyalist sympathies and

often subject to violence.

The Revolution was the first American civil war, with suspicions dividing neighbors, families and friends. Loyalists were harassed, attacked, imprisoned and even executed. Many Loyalists fled the country.

Then came the contentious 1796 presidential election.

The Federalists were led by John Adams, and the Democratic-Republicans

by Thomas Jefferson. In a multi-candidate presidential

field, they were first and second in electoral votes.

Though deeply divided by personal beliefs and political association, Adams became president and Jefferson vice president. Jefferson was frozen out of executive decisions as Adams oversaw an undeclared naval war with France, one that Jefferson bitterly opposed.

Under Adams, the Alien and Sedition Acts passed and were used to silence Democratic-Republicans.

Federalist opponents were arrested, tried before partisan judges, convicted of sedition and imprisoned.

The unanimous vote to fly the Pride Flag next June on the community flagpole has remained under the radar – speaking out is too easily misunderstood in today’s climate. But the Vets’ Club unwillingness to be used as a foil – it rejected Trustee Richard Sternberg’s proposal to fly the POW/MIA flag on the flagpole this month – suggests an unease.

Also, by rejecting Village Attorney Martin Tillapaugh’s recommendation to go easy – the trustees can approve any flag they want, he said, the problem comes when the KKK submits an application – the village trustees put all taxpayers in jeopardy.

Why? Because they could. Since there hasn’t been a check at the ballot box for local Democratic Party dominance for almost a decade now, they can get away with it.

• Maybe that’s coming to an end.

The county Republican chairman, Vince Casale, said he is already lining up a slate for the mid-March village elections. This is good; the village Republican Party collapsed in 2012 after GOP Mayor Joe Booan opened discussions to merge village police into the county Sheriff’s Department.

Now, that was accountability.

Because of national divisiveness manifest locally, many Democrats might be unwill-

ing to vote Republican. But there are other ways to provide choice: Individual citizens need only collect 50 signatures (shoot for 100; you’ll be challenged) to get on the ballot. Call Village Administrator Teri Barown, who oversees village elections, at 547-2411 for instructions.

The Democratic caucus at the end of January routinely rubber-stamps pre-selected candidates, but that doesn’t have to be: Any registered party member can have a couple friends propose and second his or her nomination, and force a contest.

Further, former trustee Lou Allstadt sought both Republican and Democratic endorsements at the party caucuses, signaling both his independence, and an interest in serving all of us, R, D or small “I”.

• Contested elections are not a radical idea.

They’re a good thing, the basis of the world’s greatest Democracy. Jousting between parties – Judge Cooper’s Federalists and Jedediah Peck’s Jeffersonians – dates back to the very founding of the village in 1807.

Plus, Democrats who have controlled the Village Board since 2020 have blind spots that call out for attention, foremost the decline of the business district. Midafternoons from January through March, downtown is a ghost town. It wasn’t that way even a half-decade ago, much less a decade ago.

While the City of Oneonta has been a successful partner in the redevelopment of Bresee’s Department Store and Stevens’

Hardware into first-rate apartments, and now the recruitment of Kearney & Son Development to construct the exciting Lofts on Dietz project, the Village Board here has actively resisted such initiatives.

The Village Board needs, one, to join the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce at the highest membership level, and, two, collaborate with merchants and chamber members to ensure vigorous and constant downtown promotion programs.

Further, instead of breaking up stately homes into apartments and more modest homes into dorms – a formula for neighborhood deterioration – the Village Board needs to partner with Bassett Hospital and developers to build affordable housing hospital employees say they want.

That could be outside the village – word is circulating about a Phoenix Mills Road project, next to Centers – or at convenient but appropriate sites in or around downtown. (For heavens’ sake, protect and enhance the neighborhoods!)

• This is no criticism of Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch, who is an exceptional representative for the village. She is focused, as she should be – there’s a lot out there – on finishing up the ambitious public works projects now underway, including the 100th anniversary renovations of historic Doubleday Field.

In the end, though, she’s the leader.

Trustee Joe Membrino, who with wife Martha moved here from Washington D.C. in 2013 on his retirement as a BIA attorney,

is a trustee in the Lou Allstadt mold – experienced in high councils, widely knowledgeable, level-headed, and no push-over.

He was appointed to fill out Tillapaugh’s trustee term when she was elected mayor.

The third Village Board member up for reelection, Macguire Benton, is a work in progress. His declaration during the Pride Flag debate that, if people disagree with him, they should run for Village Board, dramatized the arrogance that requires remedy at the ballot box.

Nominated by the Democrats when Allstadt retired, he ran unopposed last March and gained a seat with only 114 votes, the bottom of the ticket.

This week, he took to Facebook to encourage people not to contribute to the Salvation Army Kettle Drive, sure to alienate other constituents unnecessarily.

As a freshman, he should be trying to figure out who his constituents are and what they want – and don’t want – from Village Hall. A strong challenge would be a great education for him, as well as a tonic for the Village Board in general.

• Friends, all that’s required is for citizens to be citizens. If you care about preserving Cooperstown, playing to its strengths and increasing its liveability, run. Not angrily, not to settle scores or push parochial issues, but to participate in guiding “America’s Most Perfect Village” into the future.

Remember, it’s “most perfect,” not perfect. There’s work to be done.

Any board member who would support relinquishing these duties to the administrator should also be willing to adjust salary and staff in the departments where these responsibilities are currently completed.

The current county board membership is at 14, if the administrator is hired, it should be trimmed to 10 or 11 members and each member’s salary should be cut back to at least 2018 levels.

Some committees should also be eliminated. There would be no need for the Negotiations Committee, Performance Review & Goal Setting Committee, or the Strategic Planning & Technology Committee.

If the county administrator will be the budget officer, then there should be corresponding cuts in the offices that currently handle those tasks.

I encourage you to contact your county representative and discuss this, and any other relevant topics that may concern you, with him/her.

These are the kinds of costs that are hard to show on a balance sheet. That does not make them less real.

Representative Frazier would like to see a reduction in the salary and staff of any department head who has had duties reassigned to a county administrator.

What he does not account for is that many of these duties don’t belong to any one person or department.

Currently, 14 people are responsible for inter-departmental coordination, which effectively means no one is responsible for it.

Still, as Representative Frazier suggests, $250,000 is a lot of money, even if you consider that the county’s budget hovers around $117 million. While we could (and likely will) debate the assumptions

Who else could he call? Unsure of what to do, Ken took a chance and called OPT. Without hesitation, Jane Sapinsky dispatched a bus immediately and although it seemed like forever, a bus arrived in just minutes. In fact, as luck would have it, David Hotaling, the transportation director, and Gary Coons, driver of the Para-transit bus, were in the office when the call came in.

Before Jane hung up the phone, David and Gary had burst out Ken and his companion the door and on their way to dog, Pace. help.

Pace was one in a million. Of all the service dogs Ken has worked with and shared his life with, Pace has been the hardest to lose.

Pace would have been 10 years old in January. He will be remembered fondly by all of his friends that shared the bus rides, shopped together in the stores, and visited on his daily walks.

Good boy, Pace. You will be missed.

While we’re talking consolidation, perhaps merging should also be seriously pursued by other villages and towns throughout the Oneonta area and maybe it’s time to look at forming one or two county school districts?

Quid Pro Quo Now ‘Bribery’

T

he reason bribery is now the Democratic impeachment word of choice has less to do with the law than with politics.

The Washington Post reports that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee recently conducted focus groups in key House battleground districts to test “messages related to impeachment.”

Voters were asked whether “quid pro quo,” “extortion” or “bribery” were more compelling. “The focus groups found ‘bribery’ to be most damning,” according to the Post.

Democrats got the message because last weekend they began using “bribery” almost in unison to describe Mr. Trump’s conduct.

The distribution list featured 353 area leaders, garnering 57 respondents who completed the survey. It’s very important to note that the survey indicates that respondents have firm positions about city/town enterprise and job creation.

What he failed to account for are line items like the cost for maintaining that new dump truck, as well as the salary and fringe benefits for the person hired to drive it. Given the difficulties the county has had hiring people to drive trucks we already own, the assumption that truck could be put in use is a large one.

The same staffing problem is evident when discussing increased services for those affected by substance use disorder. There are currently funded lines in the budget for social services that we can’t find qualified workers to fill because surrounding counties and the private sector are willing to pay them more.

Representative Frazier and I agree if a county administrator position is created and filled, the structure of the board and its committees should be re-evaluated. Some committees could be eliminated, including Negotiations, Performance Review and Goal Setting, and the Strategic Planning and Technology Committee. If the county administrator position works as drafted, the current number of representatives could be reduced.

While we can make predictions about what might happen once a county administrator is in place, we won’t know until we begin the process, assuming we can find a qualified applicant who will be effective at her or his job. However, we do know now that we are not safeguarding taxpayers’ money as expertly as we could, nor are we allowing our hard-working employees to thrive in the jobs they were trained to do. Simply buying a new truck will not solve those fundamental problems.

I do, and of the days that followed, ones racked with guilt for me. “You knocked down and sat on a nun! Sacrilege!” I couldn’t stop shouting that in my mind.

I knew what I had to do.

Confession. That would free me of the horror. But I couldn’t risk presenting my sacrilege in the confessional. The priests in our parish all belonged to a tough, German-founded order; and some of them were given to bawling out loudly those confessing to them.

I could easily imagine one reacting to what I spilled out: “What? You did what?” At that, the line outside that confessional would scatter into the pews like startled hens. I could, however, betake myself to another member of that order, a man who was, to my mind, a true saint.

Father Joe Turner was too old and arthritic to handle hours in a stuffy confessional. Instead, he hobbled down the corridor from his room and directly into the empty choir loft high over the back of the church.

There he eased himself onto a pew, took out his rosary, and sat in the shadows, waiting to receive anyone who should come. He had a small purple stole around his neck, a sign that he was open for business.

And business came, though all male. For at that time a priest could not hear a woman’s confession unless a screen was between him and the penitent. But the males came, and one of them, me – 15, shaking, as I blurted out an account of the sacrilege I had committed.

As I blurted, Father Joe leaned forward, head in hands, shaking as much as I was. Then I realized the old man was suppressing laughter.

And I felt hurt, disappointed, even insulted.

BENNETT: American History Is Full Of Civil Wars

BENNETT/From A5 Over 750,000 Americans died while many millions became casualties – through injury, disease, losing their livelihoods, land and property.

WWI created heavy political polarization. In 1917 American labor unions, socialists and pacifist groups opposed the war. But the U.S. was dragged in and conscription began, was opposed by anti-war movements, and set off deadly draft riots.

Thousands were prosecuted under the 1918 Sedition Act; conscientious objectors, many of them Christian pacifists, were punished and a number died in Alcatraz Prison, then a military facility. Around 300,000 WALL STREET JOURNAL Editorial, Nov. 19, 2019 men refused to register, report for

duty, or deserted.

In September 1939, as America wrestled with isolationism, WWII came to Poland. There were bitter political battles between internationalists like FDR, and isolationists like Charles Lindbergh – the voice of the 800,000-member America First Committee, which was given to pro-fascist and anti-Semitic rhetoric. Two years of political polarization were only broken by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The battle for civil rights, from the 1950s through the ’70s, resulted in hundreds of citizen deaths, thousands of protests, many thousands of arrests, and the assassinations of American leaders, both black and white.

The Vietnam War then divided all, including the Democratic Party – which imploded in the summer of 1968 when Chicago police beat anti-war protesters. Humphrey won the nomination and lost to Nixon, who continued the war for six years until forced to resign in 1974.

While 58,000 Americans and upwards of 2 million Vietnamese died, anti-war protests roiled the entire nation for over 10 years; 570,000 men were classified draft offenders and 200,000 were formally accused; 8,750 were convicted and 3,250 went to jail.

Estimates of those who left for Canada and other countries range upwards of 50,000.

We have endured periods of

intense political division and polarization, often worse than now, and frequently leading to horrendous outcomes. We have fought actual internal wars with lethal weapons, arrests, and imprisonment. But – Iraq and Afghanistan notwithstanding – today’s divisions are not about life-threatening forced conscription or American war deaths.

Our political polarization today is mainly a war of words and as Winston Churchill said, “Better to jaw-jaw than war-war.” Perhaps we can all work on being better at “jawjaw” and quit seeing fellow citizens as mortal enemies.

Investigators Overwhelmed By So Many False IDs IDS/From A1 Brenner. “Due to time constraints, we wrote 138 tickets and turned the rest over to the DMV; they’ll help us track down the others to issue tickets.”

After receiving tips that “several” local bars were serving underage drinkers, Brenner put together a joint effort between the police, the state Liquor Authority and the county Sheriff’s Department to spend the evening checking that Center City bars were obeying state law.

“We go in, tell the bartender to turn off the music and turn on the lights, then we ask to see everyone’s identification,” said Brenner.

Donations Pour In For Zoe’s Care

“We had officers outside and at all the exits, and the sheriffs would escort a few out at a time to meet with officers and get ticketed.”

But, it turned out, nearly all of the bar’s patrons were carrying fake IDs – some had two or three – and after three hours, the officers ran out of paper to print the tickets on, and called it a night.

“We didn’t even get to any other bars,” said Brenner. “It’s one thing to pick up a person here or there, but we haven’t even sifted through all the tickets yet.”

It’s by far the biggest raid to date.

Second biggest was in February 2016, a double raid of Legends Filling Station and Choice Ultra Lounge.

At Choice Ultra Lounge, 70 of 84 patrons were under 21.

At Legends, state investigators found 13 violations, including 11 underage sales.

Though fake IDs are getting more and more sophisticated, bars are required to monitor patrons and only serve customers of legal age, said Brenner.

“Bars have ways of keeping on top of fake IDs,” he said. “They have scanners and devices, they need to be a little more conscientious. The bar can get in trouble, not to mention that someone who is drinking underage might get themselves into a bad situation.”

The raid on Legends and

Choice Ultra Lounge, for example, followed sexual assaults on underage patrons. Both bars had their liquor licenses revoked and closed. Legends has since re-opened with a new license, but Choice Ultra Lounge has remained shuttered.

The Sip & Sail’s liquor license is held by Adrian Origoni.

An investigation by the state Liquor Authority is ongoing, and according to spokesperson Bill Crowley, charges – including suspension or revocation – may be pending.

Those in possession of a fake ID can be hit with a fine from the courts or have their license

revoked by the DMV, Brenner said. “It fits the definition of possession of a forged instrument, which is a felony,” he said. “But we usually write it up as a traffic infraction. It’s easier on an 18- or 19-year-old who’s just trying to have some fun.”

But Brenner hopes that this will be a wake-up call to anyone who is thinking about using a fake ID. “I want students to understand the risks,” he said. “It’s not just unlawful, but you are sending your real name, your real address, your real birth day and month, to someone overseas. It’s not a smart idea to put that information out there. It could lead to ID theft.”

On Nov. 4, a door opened.

Competing with three bidders, the OCA was awarded the former Otego Elementary School by the Unatego Central school board.

So far, the OCA hasn’t had to turn anyone away. “But much longer and we probably would have to,” The Oneonta Christian Academy formed last year out of a merger of the Oneonta Community Christian School and Lighthouse Christian Academy.

It occupies 9,000 square feet in the former Christian School building at 158 River St.; Otego Elementary has 34,000 square feet.

Previously, the current building

was an auto body shop, BOCES, Headstart and an electrical appliance store.

One thing is certain however, it’s not big enough for the growing Cleveland academy.

Space may be tight as is, but no one can say it hasn’t been maximized. Two grades can share one room, and the cafeteria doubles as a locker room and triples as a study hall.

If it rains or it’s too cold to go outside, pupils stay in their rooms for recess.

“It’s a lot of juggling for the teachers,” said Cleveland, although it’s not a new practice.

“We’ve done it for years,” he said.

Oftentimes, one grade will be given a written assignment while the other completes a group activity. “The multi-levels are challenging...you have to keep both levels occupied at the same time,” says Sue Rae, who taught at the school for 17 years and now substitutes in two-grade classrooms like kindergarten and First.

Although she values the crosslevel learning that takes place in such a small space, she looks forward to the size of the new building and the possibilities that come with it.

“We could have separated areas, but we’re a little bit close together,” she said. “I would like to see a small divider, a noise divider.”

Assessing Otego Elementary, she said “the library and gymna-

sium are very big pluses.”

Amy Kropp, a Spanish teacher at OCA, looks forward to the additional space as well. With 10 students studying Spanish in a small classroom, “I’m maxed out with this class right here,” she said.

For gym, OCA students often go down River Street to the Oneonta Boys & Girls Club.

“We lose 10-15 minutes from every class to allow time for travel,” said Cleveland. Added Kropp, “The idea of having more time in gym class and a stage will be a blessing.”

Recently, K-12 students took a trip to Otego to tour their new school and were excited by what they saw. “I went to the school before,” said ninth-grader Gabriel Cutting, who attended Otego Elementary before it was closed.

“I think everyone will get lost,” he said.

Other kids expressed excitement for the new facilities and additional space. “I love the playground, it was great!” said Alyvia Miller, 14.

“We can have more special activities,” said Noelle Mulick.

Since Otego Elementary has only been closed a year, only a little work is needed, and the OCA is planning to use the building as soon as December for its annual Christmas Celebration. Plans are to start classes there next September.

“I was on my knees praying it would happen,” said OCA receptionist Charles Lapp. “It’s an exciting movement. We’ve gone from a church, to a building, to a school.”

But he quickly got the hang of it, and soon was being mentored by Matthew Margolis and Brian Kilcommons, both nationally known dog trainers.

He has trained dogs for Joan Rivers, John McEnroe, Eddie Murphy and even a few star dogs themselves.

“I trained a dog for the off-Broadway play ‘Jasper in the Park,’” he said, “It was a terrible dog, this huge white shepherd, very aggressive. They were

going to do some filming with it and the director told me they didn’t need me, and then she called me the next day to say they couldn’t get a single thing done because the dog wouldn’t listen!”

Part of training a dog is figuring out what kind of aggression a dog is struggling with, including predatory aggression – protecting his owner – fear aggression, pain aggression, redirected aggression – such as biting someone when he can’t chase a squirrel – or territo-

rial aggression, where a dog will guard food or its owner.

“I used to train as many as 800 dogs a year,” he said.

“When people would bring the dogs to the shelters in Manhattan, they would say: ‘Don’t euthanize that dog, call Shelby’.”

In addition to training the dogs of the rich and famous, he also volunteered to do search and rescue for local law enforcement.

“My first dog, Michelle, found two people alive,” he said. “And several people

who were not. We were sent to look for body parts along the Garden State Parkway because they thought a serial killer had thrown them there.”

He once tracked a woman 11 miles after her husband reported her missing following a fight. “The dog is on a 40-foot leash, but I’m at the end of that leash!”

And he had some fun with his searches too. “My daughter Carrie was told she couldn’t go to a party,” he said. “My son came to me and said she has gone out

the window. I took Michelle to the ground under her window, pointed and said, ‘Track Carrie.’ She went to the state park across the street and caught Carrie getting into the car!”

But he used his training for fun too. “My daughter’s friends would love to come over and hide in the woods for the dogs to find,” he said.

He wrote a book, “Dog Training Diaries,” in 2018, for Skyhorse Publishing, detailing his tricks and tales.

Upon his arrival in

Cooperstown, he reached out to the Susquehanna SPCA with an offer – he will offer training, free of charge, to anyone who adopts their dog from the shelter.

“I want to make sure that adoption sticks,” he said.

“I’m lucky enough to be able to afford to be generous – the more I give, the more I get. When someone adopts a dog, they save a life.”

“I get paid to play intelligently with dogs,” he said.

“Dog training has made my life spectacular.”

IN MEMORIAM James A. Iandiorio, 78; Oneonta Chiropractor, Hospice President MILFORD — James A. Iandiorio, 78, Oneonta chiropractor and civic leader who served as president of Catskill Area Hospice and the New York State Chiropractic Association, died peacefully on Nov. 16, 2019, at his home, surrounded by family.

He was born Jan. 8, 1941, in Staten Island, the son of James J. and Claire (Antico)

Iandiorio. Jim was an Army veteran, and served from 1958 to 1961.

He married Diane Catella in 1964. She predeceased him in 2017.

Jim graduated from SUNY Oneonta and from New York State Chiropractic College in Manhattan. In 1968, he moved from New York City to Oneonta to open his chiropractic prac-

Jim enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards, and was an avid reader.

For many years, Jim spent winters in Florida and loved his long visits to the beach.

Jim is survived by his children Gianina Gohde, David, Michelle and Peter Iandiorio; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his sister, Mary Iandiorio; and his significant other, June Sheehan.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the funeral home. The burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Route 28, Index.

Joan C. McLaud, 89; Founded Insurance Firm With Husband UNADILLA — Joan C. McLaud, 89, founder with her husband of the Douglas M. McLaud Insurance Agency in Otego, and also pursued a wide range of interests, passed away in her home on Nov. 6, 2019, with her devoted daughters, Mary McLaud and Susan Van Cott, by her side.

Joan was born on Dec. 19, 1929, in Oneonta, at the beginning of the Great Depression, the daughter of Stewart Crandall and Grace Matteson Crandall of Laurens. Her father was a musician and jazz pianist who filled her life with music. She loved playing the piano, organ and sang with a voice like Ella Fitzgerald and could scat with the best.

Joan was married to Douglas M. McLaud and together they raised five children in their homes on Garden Street and State Street in Oneonta and their

farm on the Otsdawa in Otego.

Joan loved animals and over the years took in and cared for 49 stray cats and other animals. Joan was an avid organic gardener who grew and canned a myriad of fruits and vegetables for her family and friends for more than 60 years. Her homemade spaghetti sauce and tomato juice were loved by all.

She was an extremely dedicated and hard worker.

Over the years she held many jobs and positions.

Among them were lifeguard and swim instructor at the Oneonta YMCA; bookkeeper for Hoffman Dry Cleaners; bookkeeper for the Town of West Oneonta; accounting assistant for Eckankar in Menlo Park, Calif., and Chanhassen, Minn.

Joan and Douglas founded the Douglas M. McLaud Insurance Agency

in Otego.

For years they worked tirelessly to make it the success it became.

At the age of 49, Joan McLaud Joan got her private pilot’s license and bought a 1953 Cesna 172. Joan was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Katheen McLaud Spisak Ernest; her beloved granddaughter, Ginny Kathleen Dolezel; and her beloved brother, David James Crandall.

Joan leaves behind her beloved children, son, Douglas McLaud and Pauline McLaud of Spring Hill, Florida.; daughters, Leslie Blum of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Susan Van Cott and Craig Van Cott of Unadilla, Mary McLaud of

South West Harbor, Maine; beloved grandchildren, Amy Callahan, Daniel Dolezel, Lori Bedard, Stephanie Horlock, Suzi Spisak-Moutinho, Zoe Vandermeulen, Leif Van Cott, Alex Van Cott, Ian Van Cott and Gillian Morrison; beloved great-grandchildren, Sam, Jade, Charlie, Skyler, Jacob, Daniel, Logan, Korey, Kasey, Gabriella, Fiona, Jake, Xander and Gwyneth; as well as greatgreat-granddaughter, Zoey.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held on Dec. 14, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to noon with a service beginning at noon.

All are welcome to share food and friendship at a 1 p.m. luncheon at Unadilla Neighborhood Apartments, 71 Clifton St., Unadilla.

Awanda Olmstead, 89; Six-Decade Member Of ‘Red Door’ Church ONEONTA – Awanda B. Olmstead, 89, who was active in the First United Presbyterian “Red Door” Church for almost six decades, passed into the Lord’s care on Nov. 4, 2019.

Awanda Belle Aldrich was born on Jan. 12, 1930, East Masonville, daughter of Cecil B. and Anna B. (Gifford) Aldrich.

She graduated from Sidney Central High School

in 1949 and New York State Ag & Tech (now SUNY Delhi) in 1950.

On Oct. 9, 1950 she married Lester H. Olmstead, who predeceased her in 1997.

Awanda worked at Clarkson Electric.

She was a very active member of First United Presbyterian (the “Red Door” church) for 59 years and longtime volunteer at

The Lord’s Table. She shared God’s love with everyone she met.

She is survived by a daughter, Awanda Lu Apple Olmstead of El Paso, Texas; grandsons, Thomas and

Victor and their families of Arizona.

A memorial service to honor Awanda’s life of faith and service will be held in the spring.

Armand Charpentier, 70;Vietnam Vet Participated In ‘Guns-A-Go-Go’ UNADILLA — Armand Charpentier, 70, a Vietnam War veteran who participated in the “GunsA-Go-Go” initiative, passed away on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019, Armand at Wilson Charpentier Memorial Hospital, Johnson City.

He was born in Brooklyn, on Jan. 8, 1949, to Maria and Pierre Charpentier.

He enlisted in the Army at 17 and served in the Vietnam War. He had deployed with the “GunsA-Go-Go” while serving in the 1st Calvary Division, 1st Aviation Detachment.

He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Grace, many sisters, brothers, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Armand was a proud veteran who actively

supported the military.

He enjoyed hosting Christmas Eve and keeping the Italian traditions alive.

He never let the wheelchair

stop him from doing what he wanted to do.

He was laid to rest on Tuesday, Nov. 19, in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga

National Cemetery.
