“He plans on expanding his product line,” said Zakrevsky.

“He wants to get into ultracapacitors. We can keep him here and grow his company.”

Initially, he said, Johnson was interested in purchasing the equipment and moving it to his Knoxville location, but the equipment was too big to move and the plant there was too small to accommodate it.

Instead, Zakrevsky put together “a strong package,” with a PILOT agreement, salestax exemptions and a $1 million Empire State Development Excelsior Tax Credit award.

He also had Johnson meet with the Otsego County Chamber and local realtors who showed houses. They engaged in a discussion with U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, and heard a presentation from the state Power Authority.

“I think he appreciated that,” he said.

Zakrevsky said “it’s not a done deal,” but “it’s going forward.”

“That will also cut down on barking,” said Schuster.

The SQSPCA set a $5 million goal in its “Shelter Us” campaign, and so far, has raised $4.6 million towards the goal.

“The idea is to enter our new building without debt so that we have more resources to put towards our animals,” said Haynes. “Having a mortgage and having to allocate some of our budget: That is Plan B.” The closure of the thrift store at the height of the pandemic put a strain on the budget, but Haynes said she was touched by the ongoing contributions to their fundraising efforts.

In the event that the shelter takes in multiple animals at a time – for instance, Haynes says, a dog hoarding case – the doors can be closed, dividing the kennel in two.

The new shelter is rapidly rising on the new campus on Route 28, across from Kevin’s Royal Ford.

“When I walked in there, I almost cried,” said Stacie Haynes, executive director.

“To be able to see something tangible after all these efforts and all their support – in some ways, it’s hard to believe!”

Ground-breaking was in August 2019, and completion is on track for late April.

“There have been some delays on the supply side due to COVID,” said Haynes. “But where they can’t work on one project, they work on another.”

Walls have been put up and trusses have been placed on both the shelter and the thrift store; the elaborate plumbing network was installed before the slab was poured. Each pen has its own drainage system for easy cleaning and waste removal. Drains are also in place for surgical sinks, laundry and bathrooms.

“It’s a challenge to approach this building in designing it for animals,” said Schuster. “Most building codes are designed for people, so trying to determine, for instance, where to place toilet fixtures, is a bit of a challenge!”

Schuster, whose firm specializes in sustainable buildings, said he paid special attention to insulation and air tightness to minimize mold and prioritize air circulation and quality.

According to Karen HuxtableHooker, Bassett Health Network spokesman, no hospitals in Delaware County are criticalaccess hospitals and they don’t have any ICU beds.

“They routinely transfer critical-care patients elsewhere,” she said.

While Fox does not have a dedicated ICU, HuxtableHooker said they have sectioned off spaces to provide COVIDspecific care.

“Not all patients who are hospitalized for the coronavirus need ICU care,” said HuxtableHooker. “Some respond to treatment quickly and fully recover.”

Numbers are rising statewide and nationally, especially as students prepare to head home for the holidays, a move that could cause cases to spike.

“Families bringing their kids back to the area need them to quarantine for 14 days,” she said.

“It’s hard, it’s the holidays, and no one wants to quarantine away from their family.”

said that no patrons have come forward with positive tests, only a few “close contacts” of the patient.

And before that, staff and residents of two residential living facilities, one in Oneonta and one in Cooperstown, tested positive for the virus, marking small “clusters” of cases that could be traced.

“That’s what we do when we interview people,” she said. “We try to determine where they’ve been for the last two weeks.”

The good news, she said, is that the SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College outbreaks have quieted, with one case at Hartwick and three at SUNY in recent days.

It’s too early, she said, to determine how many cases will spread from the positives at Cooperstown and Greater Plains Elementary Schools, both which went to remote learning this week after positive tests.

In all, 218 people are in quarantine, with one hospitalized at Albany Medical Center.

Local hospitals, meanwhile, are housing patients from Delaware County.

“Delaware County doesn’t have any ICU beds,” Bond told

Neither Herzig has shown symptoms or tested positive for the virus as of Tuesday, Nov. 17.

But more worrisome, said Heidi Bond, Otsego County public health director, is that her team so far hasn’t been able to link -- or contact trace – some of these new cases spreading across the county.

“People can’t figure out where they picked it up,” she said. “These are people who have no known exposure to someone who they knew had tested positive.”

No sooner had she arrived in 2008 on Oyaron Hill, when the Great Recession hit.

Within a few months, the fledgling president, with no chance to build a reputation or support among staff and faculty, had to begin laying people off.

The faculty balked. Criticism abounded.

Drugovich did what she had to do. Things settled down. The economy eventually rebounded,

Sanctuary Movements Recipes For Anarchy To the Editor: In his letter to the editor of Nov. 12-13, county Rep. Rick Brockway, R-West Laurens, points out that the Village of Cooperstown was “made a sanctuary haven for illegal immigrants.”

Indeed, the village, in April, 2017, voted unanimously, as reported in this newspaper, “not to participate in the Delegation of Immigration Authority’ under the Immigration & Nationality Act of 1996.”

Invoking the same idea from the opposite end of the political spectrum, Brockway has introduced a Second Amendment sanctuary proposal which would exempt Otsego County from the enforcement of certain New York State gun laws.

Two wrongs don’t make

a right. The growing idea that local communities can opt out of recognizing and enforcing legitimate laws they don’t like simply by declaring themselves sanctuaries is reminiscent of the nullification movement in the Southern states before the Civil War. It’s a clear sign of a breakdown of law and government.

It doesn’t have to be that way. The civil rights movement also defied specific laws– those enforcing segregation – but it proceeded entirely legally. Unlike the sanctuary movement, it acknowledged the authority of the law by accepting arrest and going to court in the hope that judicial rulings based on precedent and reason would change the laws Please See KUZMINSKI, A6

We have had the flag lowered for over a half-year to respect the sick

and the deceased.

That was good, and important to locals and visitors to our blessed town who travel here from around the world.

Sadly, there will be more deaths from the virus, but lowering the flag does not help the deceased and it also creates a sort of perpetual sadness and helplessness which is not good for anyone.

A fully raised flag, on the other hand, connotes hope, strength, truthfulness, pride, joy, trust and leadership.

Simply, a raised flag accentuates the positive things in the world.

Let’s accentuate the positive and all the good that it will bring.

ecently, a friend brought some spruce saplings up to the farm for planting.

Luckily, my son was up for the weekend to lend a hand with the digging. We placed some near the house and then headed for the woods, which are thin on everTERRY greens.

Oneonta Local: J.P. Van Woert is preparing to erect his house on Dietz Street. H.M. Brownson is the builder.

A.G. Shaw has sold his home to J.M. Watkins for $4,000.

Mr. Wells, 0n Centre Street, intends to build a very superior house. S.M. Ballard has bought the house of Dr. Reynolds on Chestnut Street. J. Alger has purchased a lot of Isaac Peters, and intends erecting a house soon. McDonald & Brewer have the frame up for A. Morris’s new house on Walnut Street. John Dewar has bought a house of N.I. Ford, and moved it on a lot in the rear of T.J. Gildersleeve’s.

J.H. Ostrander’s new house, which is nearly completed, improved the corner above the creek on Dietz Street.

Stephen Bull’s fine house presents a very picturesque appearance. A portion of it can be seen so far up the road as J.W. Jenks’s. The Brewer Block is nearly completed. Six nice homes are thus offered for sale or to rent. Rents will not be less than $250 per year and at that price the owners will not realize more than ten percent on cost. If a few more houses could be built so as to rent for about $150 it would be a good thing. In a few years Oneonta will be the largest town in the county, and houses will be needed.

125 Years Ago

In 1893 the Democrats had a clean majority in both Houses of Congress. President Cleveland and Secretary Carlisle had urged Congress to give them authority to sell bonds at a low rate of interest and having a short time to run, in order to replenish the dwindling gold reserve. They treated this recommendation with absolute contempt. The Great American Smokeout is now in its fourth year.

This is an educational campaign to get smokers to give up the habit for at least one day. However, for many smokers, even a few hours without a cigarette is very difficult.

One of the most interesting museums in Central New York has its headquarters at Hartwick College in Oneonta. It is called the Yager Museum and is devoted to the collection and display of Indian artifacts and relics. The collection is known as the “Upper Susquehanna Collection.” Dr. H. Claude Hardy of Hartwick College is the museum’s curator.

Willard E. Yager of Oneonta was an amateur anthropologist.

He spent most of his life collecting and classifying more than 6,000 artifacts identified with American Indians. These he housed in a fireproof building similar to an American Indian “Long House” at 19 Ford Avenue in Oneonta. When Yager died on March 4, 1929, he bequeathed the Long House and its contents, along with a residence to Hartwick College. Mr. Yager’s sister, Miss Marian Yager, died February 22, 1959, and she bequeathed to the college, the major portion of her estate, the income from which is used for the maintenance and educational use of the collection.

EDITORIAL: Particularly Now, All Unify Behind SUNY Oneonta

EDITORIAL/From A4 hilltop. Tom Rathbun, the level-headed assistant vice president/facilities, was spending $30-40 million a year upgrading the campus, and it looks great. (His successor, Lachlan Squair, appears to be quite an innovator, making SUNY Oneonta an innovator in Upstate Medical’s novel “pool testing.”)

And alumnus Bill Pullman starred in “Independence Day.” You can’t get much better than that.

SUNY Oneonta dropped the ball when COVID-19 arrived. That was then; recent, but then.

• This is now.

The SUNY Oneonta community must want to return to what it was, a campus on the make. With its particular COVID mess behind it, the SUNY Oneonta community should strive, as one, to be a Model of the Reopening.

With two anti-COVID vaccines coming online, with the wide local acceptance of masks and social distancing, with the high-

level of community sensitivity to COVID, it can be done.

The online petition – only a fraction of the faculty, some 71 out of 500 professors and instructors, have signed it – takes on Craig and Provost Leamor Kahanov personally.

While no doubt well meaning, the petition drive seems to be the wrong instrument at this point.

That’s misguided.

Of the many issues raised, the one about sensitivity to relatives of faculty who may have pre-existing conditions resonates most. But it’s hard to believe the administration would not seek to ensure what protection it can to people under particular threat of COVID. No doubt the key players in the campus heirarchy are as imperfect as the rest of us, but – at this critical point in SUNY Oneonta’s history – let’s all pull together behind the people who, more than ever, need wide support.

And that includes the campus community and the rest of us, the public at large.

A

commission of impartial observers sent down from Mars to inspect political conditions in America would find the country right now in a state of what might be called schismatic malice – full of essentially theological grievances and obsessions, torn by power struggles of races and sexes and classes, a brawl of moralized and politicized identities. It’s a crisis and a catastrophe.

Or maybe it’s a just a case of nerves – enormously exaggerated by smartphones and Twitter and Covid? Maybe the storm will pass now that there is a vaccine in the offing? Perhaps this turmoil, instead of being historic and schismatic, is essentially superficial, transient?

America has, time after time, overleaped its insoluble messes by means of money and creative adaptation and expanded democracy. On the other hand, in the years between 1861 and 1865, it became necessary to shed a great deal of blood and, among other things, to send General Sherman to lay waste that same state of Georgia whose twenty-firstcentury voters (52 percent white, 32 percent black, 10 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Asian) will, in two special elections, hold the key to control of the U.S. Senate and thereby determine the country’s policy direction for some years to come.

Sorin and Falk are authorities on American Material Culture. A Professor of Museum Studies, Sorin serves as Director of the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

Falk, an Assistant Professor, holds a master’s in Early American Culture from the University of Delaware and is working on a doctorate.

Otsego County Cuisine – The other afternoon, pie-maker Ben Rogers was about to pop a mash-potato pizza into the oven at Sal’s Pizzeria, 285 Main Street, Oneonta. Ben’s brother, Justin Haynes, 8 years younger, was maintaining the patter with customers, Theo Van Gogh to his brother’s Vincent. The artistic allusion is apt. Enter the cavernous pizza parlor and approach the counter. You’re quickly confronted with creativity: Chicken Caesar Pizza, Turkey Biscuits and Gravy Pizza, Chicken Spiedie Pizza.

But, the craziest is the mash-potato variety, a big seller.

“Some college kids asked for it and I did it,” he explained.

LIFE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19

he following were some of the definitions of the word “sad” from dictionary.com.

“Affected by unhappiness or grief; sorrowful or mournful, expressive of or characterized by sorrow, causing sorrow; somber, dark, or dull; drab; deplorably bad, sorry.” Thesauraus. com lists 46 synonyms for sad.

And I add an additional from other sources, pathetic. The following story is sad by almost all of these. This was originally reported by CNN. Jodi Doering, an Emergency Room nurse in Dearing, S.D., out of severe frustration and feelings of being overwhelmed, tweeted Saturday that her patients were dying of COVID-19 but remained in denial of the pandemic’s existence.

• She called it a horror movie that never ends. Besides treating patients who were dying and the stress that it caused her and her colleagues, they also faced the additional emotional toll of treating patients who despite being severely ill, who while dying, still refused to acknowledge that they had been infected with a virus that they

said didn’t exist.

Patients on 100-percent oxygen would swear that it was not real and many would lash out at the nurses and doctors trying to help them for trying to convince them they were dying of COVID. There were incidents of patients screaming that it was all a fraud and that the medical staff were only wearing PPE to confuse them, that there was no need for it, and demanding that they take RICHARD it off.

STERNBERG Rather than communicating with their loved ones before they died, they would rant against anyone or anything that tried to convince them that they were critically ill with COVID. • Cases are skyrocketing in North and South Dakota currently at a rate that is the fastest in the nation.

In North Dakota, the Republican

Gov. Doug Burgum pleaded with residents, “You don’t have to believe in COVID, you don’t have to believe in a certain political party or not, you don’t have to believe whether masks work or not. Just do it because you know one thing is very real. And that 100 percent of our (hospital) capacity is being used.”

On the other hand, Kristi Noem, governor of South Dakota, has continued to oppose mask mandates or closures and has joined in antagonism to mainstream medicine.

She hosted soon-to-be ex-President Donald Trump at a tightly packed Fourth of July celebration at Mount Rushmore. Even after the president acknowledged that he had COVID-19 last month, many of his supporters continue to refuse to acknowledge it is real.

40 Years Ago

Editor’s Note: Milford Central Superintendent of Schools Mark Place wrote this Thanksgiving letter to the district’s families.

E

ach of the last five years I have prepared a letter at this time of the year with a focus on the upcoming holidays. Today I write to you for the same purpose along with a message of hope and gratitude.

As a part of the MCS family, my thoughts are with all of you. I see the exhaustion in all of our eyes and the want for this pandemic to just be over.

Collectively we have sacrificed a great deal to keep ourselves, our families, and MCS safe, and I am grateful for your continued patience and grace as we have traveled together through one of the most challenging times in our history.

Thanksgiving is by far my favorite holiday. It is, and always has been, about family. My earliest memories

of Thanksgiving are of starting the day at my greatgrandfather’s farm on Route 205 in Laurens and ending at my grandparents’ home in Oneonta.

And all these years later, what MARK I truly remember PLACE are the feelings of togetherness.

I’m sure that many of you have similar memories and are working hard to build that for your children.

This year, my family has decided to forgo coming together for the holidays.

It is one more heartbreak of this pandemic for me, but the thought of my parents possibly catching COVID-19 is more heartbreak than I’m willing to endure.

As you and your family prepare for

the holidays, I’m not going to ask for you to make the same decision that my family has made. Rather, all that I’m going to ask is that you have a plan to do whatever is necessary to protect you and your family.

By protecting your own family, the MCS family will be protected as well.

At the end of the day, our goal is the same – to be able to be together, and we want nothing more than to be able to continue with in-person instruction after the holidays.

I am hopeful that each of us will continue to do our part to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and that the end of the pandemic will come sooner than current models predict. And when the pandemic has finally ended, I hope that the entire MCS family will come together and celebrate how well we took care of one another.

We are Milford Strong! And we will get through these challenging times together. May your holidays be filled with joy.

How do we stop this when so many won’t even believe it is real, or dangerous, and won’t begin to cooperate in the protection of themselves and their families?

• Last night I was talking to a close friend, a college classmate who is a family physician in rural Wisconsin.

He is over 65 and male like myself but otherwise has no risk factors.

He and his entire family sustained COVID-19 in October.

They are not sure what

the sequence of spread was; he, his wife, and his step-daughter are all in healthcare. He said it was the sickest he ever felt.

I admit I, who has a total of seven risk factors, am scared that I may become infected. If so, I have a very significant fatality risk.

Hopefully I can stay safe until there is a vaccine available to me.

I suppose I can take solace in the fact that between those that don’t believe the disease is real or that it can make them sick, and those who will refuse the vaccine, I stand a reasonable chance of getting it within six months.

BERKSON/From A4 farmer was plowing with horses. Occasionally the breeze blew his voice in my direction and I could hear that he used different words for giddy-up and whoa.

It must have been around lunchtime because in the distance a woman approached across the furrows with a lunch basket for her man. They greeted each other happily and I could hear their harmony of laughter. Even at the brash age of 22 I saw the beauty in the scene.

Hailey came by and asked me if I wanted to do some reconnaissance, which meant we’d be looking for a

By now, those trees planted back in Germany must be 40 feet tall.

“By not crowding it in one Small Business Saturday, we’re able to lessen the crowds and facilitate social distancing,” he said. “It’s a great downtown shopping experience.”

COVID-19 restrictions on large crowds forced Destination Oneonta to cancel the annual Santa parade, but that doesn’t mean Santa is skipping Oneonta entirely.

Instead, he will Zoom live from the North Pole to meet with kids – no bundling up or waiting in the cold required.

“Kids can sign up for a time to Zoom with Santa, and one of his helpers will let you into the chat,” said Katrina Van Zandt, Destination Oneonta’s director of membership and events. “Then you can visit one-on-one with Santa.”

Destination Oneonta is also looking for a way to record the chats so that the kids will be able to take them as a memento, Drnek said.

In addition to the Zoom chats, kids can leave letters

to Santa in the mailbox at his cottage in Muller Plaza.

The annual Gingerbread House and Festival of Lights tree-decorating competitions will also be held virtually.

“This year’s theme is to build a traditional gingerbread house,” said Van Zandt.

“You take a picture of yourself with it and post it on our Facebook page in each category.”

Though many categories – including Best Candy Use, Most Intricate and Tallest – are voted on by the board, there is still a chance to vote for the Viewer’s Choice, determined by who gets the most likes.

The Festival of Trees will be held much the same way, inviting homes and businesses to show off their elaborately decorated trees. “We want to see you, your pets, your families in the photo so we know it’s not one you found a picture of and submitted,” she said. “It’s hard to Photoshop yourself in!”

“The parade draws such a big crowd, especially from out of town,” said Leon.

“So obviously, we have to

“Because we can’t do visits in the cottage, it’s all about Santa sightings,” said Leon.

Kids are invited to wave and “elbow-bump” Santa, Mrs. Claus, Frosty and Rudolph, and also to take a photo to submit to the Chamber of Commerce’s website in a “Santa Spotting” spree – whether you see them window-shopping downtown, picking up fresh produce at the Farmers Market, or feeding the ducks at the Fly Creek Cider Mill.

“Santa and Mrs. Claus are really pumped about making these surprise visits around town,” said Leon. “They’ll have masks on and be able to meet with people while still keeping six feet of social distancing.”

The cottage will still be in Pioneer Park, but with a new edition – a mailbox where kids can drop a letter to Santa.

But be sure to include a return address, because not only will he write back, said Leon, but his elves will include a special gift with the reply.

Also new this year is story time with Mrs. Claus, who will do a virtual reading on the Christmas Committee’s Facebook page every week through the Christmas season.

In 2016, Angie and Graig Eichler, Country Club Road, donated their 96-foot Norway Spruce, making it the second largest tree in Rockefeller Center history.

They worked with their neighbor, Heidi HofbauerBuzzy of Alpine Awards & Engraving, to make an ornament in honor of the occasion. According to Graig, they have commissioned and sent one to the families of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree every year since their own tree went up.

“It’s a little tradition we started after ours went up,” said Angie. “We get their address and send them an ornament, and they almost always call us or send a little note back. It’s nice to connect in that way!”

Angie was at the latest cutting with new ornaments for the Dick family, as well as for anyone who wants to bring a little OneontaRockefeller flare to their own Christmas tree. The ornaments are also available for sale at Alpine Engraving.

The Dick family plans to go down to the city to see their tree all lit up. “This is the kind of thing you tell your grandchildren,” said Paula.

And as the tree was loaded onto the flatbed truck, a rumor began circulating through the gathered crowd that this may not be the last tree Oneonta sends to the big city.

“That’s top secret,” said Pauze.

Irma D. Cortese, 75; Oneonta Native Pursued Insurance Career In Dallas

ONEONTA – Irma D. (Boglioli) Cortese, 75, of Oneonta, who pursued a career in insurance in Dallas, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020, in Oneonta.

She was born on Jan. 25, 1945, in The Bronx, daughter of the late Constantino and Ray (Hausman) Boglioli.

Irma was raised in Pearl River. She married Frank Cortese, and they welcomed their son Francis Paul, before moving to Dallas in the mid 1970s. There, she was an insurance agent with John Hancock, before opening her own agency, Irma Cortese Farmer’s Insurance agency.

Irma was loved by many

for her kindness, friendship, joy and laughter.

She loved nature, and was often on hiking or canoeing trips. She was the former president of the Dallas Down River Club, which promoted paddling, and was known for hiking the Grand Canyon. She will be remembered for “Doing it my way.”

She is survived by a son Francis (Deborah) Cortese of Dallas, her surrogate daughter Argryo (Paul) Michelson of Tuscan, Ariz., and granddaughter Rainy, whom she loved dearly; brothers Louis (Ruth) Boglioli of Florida, their children Julie and Jay,

Conrad (Carol) Boglioli in the Town of Maryland, and their children Kara, Ted and Irma Cortese Michael; nephews Shawn Daley, Gerard Boglioli and Willy Daley; several grand nieces and grand nephews; a sister-in-law Theresa (Cookie) Boglioli in Florida, and special friends in New York and Dallas, especially Carol Wickstrom and Linn Welborn.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a

sister Betty Lou Daley and brother in law Bill Daley.

A lover of all animals, Irma’s family is encouraging donations to your local SPCA, or Humane Society in her memory.

Her family would like to acknowledge and thank the Unit 3 Staff of Fox Hospital Nursing Home for the excellent care provided for Irma during her time there.

A funeral was held Saturday Nov. 14 at Delker & Terry Funeral Home with Rev. John Buddle officiating.

Violet E. Wells, 77; Home and Health Care Assistant ONEONTA - Violet E. Wells, 77, a Puerto Rico native who made her home in Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2020, at her home, surrounded by her family.

She was born May 19, 1943, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the daughter of the late Raymond and Angelita (Taverez) Marble.

Violet graduated from Oneonta High School with the Class of 1963.

On March 3, 1968, Violet married Nelson A. Wells Jr. in Oneonta.

Nelson predeceased her on April 9, 2005.

For many years Violet was independently employed in housekeeping and health Violet Wells care.

Violet loved her cats, tending to her flowers, cooking, baking, sitting and birdwatching, sewing and crafting. But, it was her grandchildren that brought her the greatest joy. She treasured the time she spent with them.

Violet is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Nelson A. and Teri Wells III; two precious grandchildren, Gerald Wells and Kristen Wells and fiancé, Daniel Marino; one brother, Brian Marble; two sisters, Susan and Stan Holmes and Beverly Fuller; four sistersin-law, Patricia Rotolo, Linda Holtsmaster, Sandra Morin and Ginger and Paul Butler; as well as several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Richie Marble; and her father-in-law and mother-

By Tuesday evening, Nov. 17, 567 people had signed the petition. The signatures included 71 faculty – out of a total 500 faculty members; the remaining signatures were students, alumni and Oneonta residents.

The petition identifies its source as the SUNY Oneonta COVID-19 Safety Coalition and exhorts, “Be Smart, SUNY Oneonta.”

In an interview and videos to the campus community, SUNY Oneonta President Dennis Craig said some differences arose as the Reopening Plan was being developed.

• One, there is some faculty resistance to the campus goal of offering face-to-face – or “mask-tomask” (M2M) – instruction in 20 percent of classes. “If you look at the consolidated campuses within SUNY, 40, 50 up to 60 percent” of classes have a M2M option, he said, adding, “Currently, we are far below this benchmark.”

• Two, what’s called “dual modality,” where faculty must teach in-class students, and address students as home via a camera and microphone at the back of the room. “Dual modality is important to serve both segments of our student community” – those who want in-person instruction and those who prefer distance learning, he said.

“Our goal is to work with faculty and make sure our students have the in-person classes they need,” the president said.

Faculty Senate President Jim Wilkerson and UUP President Dave Lincoln didn’t return several calls, but Keith Schillo, a veteran biology professor, agreed to speak on behalf of the petitioners.

A perceived impersonality bothered some, Schillo said. For instance, medical exemptions require faculty to fill out a standard ADA form, which is then processed in the HR department.

“Last week, we learned they were going to offer a $1,000 stipend for a threecredit course,” he said.

“Instead of enticing people, it made them more angry.”

The conclusions of the COVID Response Task Force are being shared by the deans with the department chairs, who then share findings with faculty.

There is not unanimity among departments, Schillo said. He’s heard biology, chemistry and elementary ed made a “unanimous” decision not to provide volunteers for dual-modality courses. On the other hand, he said, psychology and history have agreed to participate.

For their part, students “want to come back,” according to Student Association President Gabriella Cesaria. An association survey of 1,500 students found 50 percent want oncampus classes to resume.

“To students, we are their rock, we are their home,” said Craig.

Also, that off-campus students not only have to undergo daily checks – temperatures and the like – before coming on campus, and will have to carry a card that records those checks.
