Crash Kills Avanzatos’ Mother, 90

G

uiseppa Avanzato, 90, matriarch of the Oneonta family, died from injuries received in a car crash Sunday night, Nov. 11, in Goshen. Her son, Vincent, who operates Ristorante Stella Luna with his brother, Tony, is recuperating from injuries in Orange Regional Medical Center. The crash occurred at 8:41 p.m., when an eastbound Jeep jumped the median on Route 17 and struck the Avanzato’s Audi head-on. The Jeep’s driver died at the scene. The two positions are two of seven City Hall slots the mayor is proposing to leave open next year. He estimates that would save more than $350,000 in a budget that nonetheless predicts a $441,000 deficit in the general fund. “The budget presented is based on aggressive interventions, principally through reducing headcount through attrition,” the mayor wrote in a memo that accompanied the fiscal plan he distributed to council on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
