ll day Saturday, Oct. 20, Bob Orlando and the Abrams family knew something was amiss.

“Melissa and Hugh smelled something strange in the morning,” he said. “We’d put the fire in the woodstove out that morning, so we didn’t think it was that.

In the afternoon, Rodney and William said they could smell it, and then by about 10 p.m., I could smell it too. We couldn’t find any smoke; we thought it was a dead animal in the walls.”

Blendos League Founder Takes Oneonta Basketball To The Professional Level

C

ameron Hayes wants to make Oneonta a basketball town.

The founder of the Blendos Health and Longevity movement, a yearround basketball league he founded in 2013, has just signed with the American Basketball Association to take his basketball team, the Oneonta Octane, professional.

“We were playing at a tournament and a player from the Elmira Eagles ABA team wanted to play

on my Blendos team,” he said. “He brought other players, and that night, I started looking into it.”

But at the time, the franchise fee for the ABA was $10,000. “I couldn’t justify it at the time,” he said.

But he got a lift from Jim Evans, who founded the Binghamton Bulldogs team last year. “I saw the success of his team and thought it would be a good next step for us,” he said. “I contacted him and he told me the franchise fee had been reduced to $2,500.”

The Octane is one of 26 teams in the Northeast Region, which includes the Eagles, Bulldogs and the Syracuse Stallions.

“We’re supporting our area, so it’s friendly competition,” he said.

The Octane is the area’s only professional sports team. The Oneonta Stallions football, of which Hayes was a member, moved to Broome County in 2016 after five years in Oneonta.

The team’s first game will be played against the Elmira Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 27, but they’ll play a home game at the Stamford High School gym at 6 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 11.

They’ll also host a team ribbon cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.

ichael Bagby, Oneonta, a SUNY Oneonta student stuyding Geology, traveled to the coast of Maine with 10 other students to study invertebrate animals and marine biology at the Darling Marine Center, a field station of the University of Maine.

Bagby and the other students spent three intensive days sampling from a

variety of marine habitats.

Activities included a ride on a research vessel (upon which students collected open water samples), a visit to a tidal mud flat, and a visit to an intertidal zone.

Students learned about the importance of fisheries in Maine firsthand and were also introduced to the delights of cooking and eating fresh Maine seafood.

Owner, Family Of 6 Flee Early Morning Hartwick Seminary Fire FIRE/From A1 He tried to put it out with water, but when he realized it was too big, he ran to the upstairs apartment to alert the Abrams family.

They managed to get five of the six dogs out in the first trip, but Yipsie, the smallest of Orlando’s three dogs, was still trapped inside, and Rodney went back in the burning house to get her.

“We were lucky we all made it out when we did,” said Orlando. “Within five minutes of us getting out, the whole house was engulfed. There were flames coming out of every window, every door.”

Though a cat did die in the fire, all six humans and six dogs made it out without injury. The Abrams’ son Hugh, who lives at the house, was staying with a friend that night and was not home when the fire broke out.

Curtis Callahan, night manager of the Cooperstown Commons’ McDonald’s, across from the home, was walking to work around 3 a.m. when he saw the fire, said his boss, Josh Schecter.

“The road was still blocked off when I got here,” Schecter said. “Curtis … called 911. When the fire trucks came, he opened and gave them coffee and breakfast.”

Hartwick Volunteer Fire Department #2, located up Route 28 by the Pit Stop, responded to the call, called mutual aid, and 60 firefighters from Hartwick #1 in the hamlet, Cooperstown, Fly Creek and Mount Vision, as well as tankers from Schuyler Lake and Middlefield, responded.

“When we arrived on the scene, the fire was coming out all sides,” said Hartwick #2 Chief David Bryant, officer in charge at the scene.

“Once we confirmed all had exited the structure safely,

Just after 4 a.m. the roof collapsed, and at daylight, Bryant contacted the Town of Hartwick, which sent

over an excavator to demolish the remaining standing structure. The scene was cleared by 11 a.m. Sunday morning, but in the early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 23,

the fire rekindled, and all five companies returned to the scene to douse the fire.

According to Bryant, the fire is believed to have started from a woodstove or

chimney malfunction and has been declared accidental.

eighbors and friends have stepped up to assist the Abrams family and Bob Orlando following the fire that destroyed their Hartwick Seminary home on Sunday, Oct. 21.

“Everyone has been really good to us,” said Bob Orlando, the owner of the home. “We’re so thankful to everyone who has helped.”

Within hours of the fire, The Angel Network of Cooperstown put out a call for clothes, hygiene products and phones to give to the residents, who left only with the clothes on their backs.

According to the Angel Network’s

Facebook page, no additional clothing and furniture is needed at the moment, as the family is staying in a hotel and has limited storage space.

Because the family has no access to kitchen facilities, gift cards to local restaurants are especially needed, as is cash.

Orlando has his dogs with him, so food, bedding and toys are needed for them.

Donations may be dropped off at Stephanie Nelan’s house at 19 Eagle St., Cooperstown.

Additionally, Melissa Marietta, wife of county Representative Andrew Marietta, has started a GoFundMe campaign to help the family find new housing. (Go to gofundme.com, and search “abrams family fund.”)

“They are looking for a rental in the

Cooperstown school district, but at this time can only afford to pay $450 a month including utilities,” Marietta wrote on the GoFundMe page. “This GoFundMe effort is to raise funds to allow them to cover housing costs for their new rental and purchase furnishings.”

At press time, over $1,305 of the $2,500 sought had been raised.

The Angel Network is also trying to help the family find a new residence in the Cooperstown area. “Perhaps the community will want to give towards helping them rent somewhere to stay in the Cooperstown School district as they have a seventh grade and tenth grade students,” they wrote in an email.

Melissa and Rodney, along with oldest son William, then an infant, moved into the “mother-in-law” apartment in 1997. “They’re my family,” he said.

Orlando had recently redone the front porch, put in a new ceiling and installed a new stove in the Abrams apartment. “I’ve done quite a bit of remodeling,” he said. “It was a five-bedroom house, with a game room in the attic for the kids.”

The Abrams family has been staying at a hotel and Orlando has been staying at a friend’s camp in Middlefield with his three dogs – Yipsie, Little Bear and Bismark – but has met with the family for meals since the fire.

“We all came out alive,” said Orlando. “We’re very blessed.

We’ve got each other, and we’re going to be all right.”

On Monday, Oct. 22, sheriff’s Deputy Craig Morrison responded to a complaint about the animals’ poor condition. “He didn’t like what he saw,” said Sheriff Richard J. Devlin, Jr. “The animals did not have adequate shelter, and it was obvious they weren’t being cared for.”

There was no residence on the property, and Devlin described the structure as an uninsulated shed.

Haynes and her volunteers lured them into the truck with apples and drove them back to the SAS on Route 28 here, where they were examined by a veterinarian.

“We were advised not to hose off the mud because it would be traumatic,” said Haynes. “When

The pigs were put in kennels with hay and sawdust, and soon, the mud was starting to clear.

“They would eat, lie down, root around and snort,” she said. “It was beautiful.”

The three younger pigs were taken Tuesday, Oct. 23, by the Southern New York Pig Rescue.

and is planning to take the adult male. “She fell in love!” said Haynes.

As of press time, no charges had been filed against the owner, who was not identified, but Devlin said the investigation is ongoing.

But according to the sheriff, animal cruelty cases are up in the county, possibly because of bystander intervention. “We’re hearing more and more animal complaints,” he said. “If you think something is going on, let us know. These animals depend on humans for their care.”

On Sunday, Oct. 21, James S. Mumbulo, 45, Edmeston, was arrested and charged with 27 counts of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals after 27 dead cows were found in the barn of his rented dairy farm at 1677 County Route 20.

“Someone called to say he hadn’t seen the cows in awhile,”

said Trooper Aga Dembinska, Troop C spokesman. “When the troopers arrived, the cows were in such an advanced state of decomposition that it was impossible to tell what the cause of death was.”

During the investigation, state troopers at Richfield Springs allegedly discovered that there was no food or water in the barn, and that the carcasses were surrounded by “several inches” of manure.

There were no living animals on the property.

“There are so many questions,” she said. “Were they killed by a disease? Did they all die at once?

And why just leave them there?”

Mumbulo was released on an appearance ticket and told to bury all of the remains at least three feet deep by Wednesday, Oct. 24.

These are not the first animal cruelty cases against farmers this year. In April, 100 animals were rescued from a farm in Garratts-

ville after the animals were found without food or water and in filthy, cramped conditions. William J. Desimone, 43, and Gabrielle Bastian, 52, were charged with torturing and injuring the animals.

And though no charges were filed, earlier this month, 53 Lhasa Apsos were rescued by the animal shelter from a hoarding situation in Milford.

Haynes believes such situations could be remediated by appointing a county animal control officer. “If we had a commitment to addressing animal cruelty, we could nip it in the bud before it’s too late,” she said. “Right now, all people can do is call 911, and that feels weird to some people.

A lot of animal cruelty goes unreported until it’s really bad or too late.”

But until such an officer is hired, she said, it’s important for bystanders to keep reporting.

“Action will get taken,” she said.

Governor Cuomo’s Programs Have Been Huge Help Locally

Throughout, support for tourism promotions and programs – for the Hall, The Fenimore and Farmers’ museums, Glimmerglass Opera and Otsego Lake generally – have been unstinting.

The governor understands competition, and counties, cities and towns in 10 economic-development districts have had to compete for funding, with state support going to the best ideas. Competition allowed Otsego County to shine.

Similarly, in open competition the City of Oneonta won $10 million in Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) money in 2016, which since has brought an additional $4-5 million to the city, and the results promises to be transformative.

The governor’s Republican challenger, Marc Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive, is a charismatic rising star, but he just hasn’t provided a clear, compelling vision to replace Andrew Cuomo, who has earned a third term.

Faso’s Knowledge, Experience Makes Him Better Choice In 19th

U

.S. Rep. John Faso, the incumbent congressman in Otsego County’s 19th Congressional District, has been in the middle of the state’s decision making almost since his election to the state Assembly 30 years ago.

Soon, he was leading the team that drafted Gov. George Pataki’s first budget. Then, he rose to Assembly minority leader. In 2002, he ran for state comptroller; in 2006, he ran for governor against Democrat Eliot Spitzer. (Guess we voters got that one wrong.)

Elected to succeed Chris Gibson in 2016, he’s followed a sensible playbook, obtaining seats on key committees

Like Sean Eldridge in 2014, and Zephyr Teachout in 2016, he’s an educated, engaging, ambitious young Democrat, backed by big money, who parachuted into the 19th Congressional District just a couple of years ago for the sole purpose of running for Congress in what’s perceived as an at-play district.

His campaign’s been dogged by lyrics from a short hip-hop career a dozen years ago; Google “delgado lyrics” if you want to know more.

Questioned about it, at Cooperstown’s Templeton Hall and elsewhere, he glibly answers along the lines, what I was working for then, I’m working for now. Let’s hope not.

That glibness is evident in identifying “greed” as our national sin – really? – and in parroting pre-tested bromides.

Maybe he cares for us, but you have to suspect he could just as easily be caring for Ohio’s 1st or Colorado’s 6th, if that’s where the better opportunity had been.

Devlin Shuts Door On Problem; His Rival Promises New Ones

I

n 2017, Otsego County Richard J. Devlin Jr. faced a searing personal and professional challenge. And he’s resolved it.

He’s handed allegations that his prison-guard son threatened colleagues and the public over to county board Chair David Bliss, ensuring it will reach an independent and neutral resolution via state Civil Service Law. Retired state trooper Bob Fernandez has a problem, too – a built-in conflict. And if he were to be elected to succeed Devlin, it wouldn’t be over, but just beginning.

Oneonta Union Free School – On Monday morning the bell rang out its merry notes of invitation to the children of Oneonta, to come to school. To this invitation over 200 children and young people responded on the first day – and still they come, just as we expected, just as we have all along predicted. To organize such a crowd, and get everything in good working order, will tax the energy of the teachers, and call for patience and good nature on the part of all. Now is the time for good words and good deeds on the part of every friend of education, to the end that the school may indeed be a joy and a blessing to every family in the district, and also to those who come in from abroad. Hold up the hands of the teachers, keep the scholars steady and regular in attendance and patiently wait for the good results that are coming. This is the peoples’ school. Therefore let the people love it, cherish it and help the true men and good women to build it up into the noblest public improvement in the valley. (Ed. That is the message a Chicago manufacturer will give the government Tuesday when he presents a 5 X 6- foot scale model of a proposed moon building design. The model was shown for the first time at a news conference on Wednesday. The actual building would consist of a cigar-shaped living chamber, 520 feet long, 160 feet wide and 65 feet high. This domed Quonsettype structure would be protected by a shield, 460-feet long, 380 feet wide and 83 feet high. Knocked down for rocket transport, the structure was said to take up only eight to ten percent of that volume. Dr. John S. Rinehart, Director of the Mining Research Laboratory at the Colorado School of Mines, said it would take between 50 and 75 rockets to transport the building materials to the Moon.

“Maybe older adults still see it racially. But the kids just see it as being cool.” Not so long ago, the attire marked by vibrant colors, oversized stylings and prominent logos for brand names such as FUBU, Mecca and PNB Nation could only be found in small specialty stores in black neighborhoods such as Harlem and Watts. Influenza Sweeps On – The epidemic of Spanish influenza was apparently slightly checked on Tuesday according to Health Officer John H. Moon. The number of new cases has decreased slightly in the past few days. However, there still remain several hundred ill with the disease along with a large number of cases of pneumonia. Both Thanksgiving Hospital and Otsego Hall are caring for 40 patients each and a very large number are ill in their homes. The disease seems to run through a family, and when one member of a family is afflicted the others are very likely to become ill. During the past week there have been 10 deaths in Cooperstown. This brings the total in the village to 16 since the epidemic began three weeks ago. Prescriptions calling for morphine, codeine, or heroin, written by registered doctors for patients suffering from Spanish influenza.

Thirty-eight counts of animal cruelty were filed in Oxford Town Court against a Brooklyn man accused of improperly caring for 76 Pomeranian dogs. The case began October 12 when Chenango deputies executed a search warrant at the unventilated, excrement-covered mobile home of Stephen Fong, 56. Fong was also charged with providing false information said Chenango County SPCA Director Carol Hedlund. A pit bull was also seized by deputies. Additional charges stemmed from the 13 bags of dog remains taken from the scene containing 38 dogs, some of which were so badly decomposed the breeds could not be determined.

Science Can Be Political Tool, And Even Worse, Up For Sale

I

read with interest and admiration the article in last week’s paper about the different kinds of “truth.”

Objective truth is the “truth” that is supported by fact. Subjective “truth” is what circumstances point toward or what we want, based on the information we have at our disposal, to believe.

The Senate confirmation hearings for judge, now justice, Kavanaugh were used in the article to illustrate the differences.

I found myself agreeing with the points being made until the author alleged that it was the Republicans who failed in the search for THE truth by not having the FBI conduct a thorough MIKE investigation.

ZAGATA The truth is that we have no idea whether or not their investigation was “thorough.” What we do know is that the Democrats sat on the information alleging sexual abuse until AFTER the Senate hearings.

Had they wanted the FBI to do a thorough investigation in search of the

“truth”, the information about alleged sexual abuse would have been provided to the FBI BEFORE, not AFTER, the hearings. Had that been done, the FBI’s findings would have been a part of those hearings and thus fully vetted.

Based on that information, one can conclude the real agenda was not a search for the “truth”, but an attempt to delay the judge’s confirmation until after the mid-term elections.

• Does that conclusion represent the objective or subjective “truth”? Each of us enters the search for the real “truth” with built-in bias. That makes it very difficult to accept information that differs from the results we want, i.e. don’t confuse me with the facts.

It becomes tempting to omit certain information when offering our version of the truth to others. For example, the author omitted the fact that the ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee sat on the allegation of

sexual abuse for six weeks prior to the hearings. Without that information, it is much easier to “sell” the truth that the FBI didn’t do a thorough investigation.

• Finding the truth is not easy. I was invited to lunch recently by a person who wanted to talk about climate change. The person was very sincere and had done considerable research on the topic. In fact, it was that research that led to confusion, because one source stated that the recent deviations in our climate were outside the norm and another source said they weren’t.

How does the average lay person or non-scientist determine which one is the “truth”?

His Democratic opponent, Joyce St. George, is an energetic and well-spoken state investigator from the farthest reaches of Delaware County. There’s nothing the matter with her, but there’s just no good reason right now to shift.

Bill Magee Earns Appreciation; Chad McEvoy Deserves A Chance

irst elected in 1990, Assemblyman Bill Magee, the Cazenovia-area Democrat, and Seward have been a reliable team – Magee a ranking Democrat from the 121st District in the Democratic House to Republican Seward in the Republican Senate.

Magee has been unwell for years, and yet he nobly sol-

diers on. His support for farms and public schools has been unstinting.

Brookfield Town Supervisor John Salka, running for a third time, would do well; but there’s simply no good strategic reason to send a Republican to the Democratic House.

• Also, we’re lucky to have a brainy Democrat from Westford, Chad McEvoy, running in the spaghetti-thin 101st that snakes from New Hartford through Springfield, Middlefield, Westford and Maryland locally and all the way to the Town of Montgomery, wherever that is.

Happily, one of his main campaign planks is to see the district – it’s now served by Brian Miller, a Republican from the Utica area – redrawn after the 2020 Census into a less crazy configuration. Nice.

Could Magee help the younger man into the successful collaboration he has played with Seward? Interesting idea.

Regardless, an assemblyman who wakes up each morning and looks out his window at our fair Otsego County would only be a plus.

In Times Of Trial, Americans Have Always Fought For Equality To the Editor: Fear can suppress freedom and truth in the most profound and nuanced ways, so as President Franklin Roosevelt said in 1933, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” We cannot feed it. When we continuously shine the light of our aspirations towards truth and justice, then freedom prevails.

America’s fight for freedom is fielded both abroad and at home, and right now there is a struggle at home. Our country was not founded with the rights of all intact, but the pursuit of equality was mandated in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Each time our country has found itself in a trying time, our citizens have fulfilled their pledge and fought for all to stand in the light of equality.

This is because each generation of Americans has had to answer the same question, but under different circumstances – will you embody the principles set forth as our guiding light to find justice and equality for all?

I believe without reservation that this generation will propel the current of truth, justice and equality to reach every corner, every citizen of our country. The words of Claudia Ruggerini, an Italian freedom fighter during World War II, give me strength and hope, “Stronger than fear is the desire to fight for freedom.”

Now is a moment of growth for women’s rights and freedom; history requires us all to fight for it.

It is on all of us if a woman fears speaking up, but President Trump says it is a “scary time for young men” who may be falsely accused of sexual misconduct. Let us not allow him to change the narrative.

Count the number of men in your life that have been falsely accused of sexual misconduct. Now, think of the women in your life that have experienced any form of sexual misconduct, including even seemingly innocuous displays of misogyny. Tracie Ellis Ross said, “The innocuous makes space for the horrific.”

We cannot allow any space for mis-

treatment of any member of our society.

Only a person who makes a false accusation, and only a person who victimizes another need worry. A man that treats each woman with the dignity that every woman and man deserve has nothing to worry about.

But I do worry. I worry that the courageous actions of a few will not be enough to liberate us all. More must be done.

The change that liberates starts by speaking truth to power. Power is in the hands of those that bind to one another, and in unison proclaim their rejection of what was and shine for all to see. And truth is their most powerful ally.

Let’s listen. Do you hear it? Truth is being spoken to power. Let it sing. It is the harmony of equality. It is what sustains our hope that America is the land of the free, and home of the brave.

If We Cry ‘Wolf’ When There’s None, What If One Appears?

That’s not true “science” where we test the null hypothesis and let the chips fall where they might. If we deliberately omit data points because they aren’t consistent with what we want them to be, that isn’t good science.

The downsides of doing so are a loss

of public confidence and the expenditure of scarce capital to cure a problem that may not exist. If we cry “wolf” when there is no wolf, will the public be willing to support what needs to be done when a real “wolf” exists?

• It’s election season, and we’re all being bombarded by various versions of the truth by candidates for office.

I do not personally know all of the candidates, so I can only reach the subjective truth about how I feel they will perform if elected.

I do, however, personally know two of the candidates – state Sen. Jim

Seward and Congressman John Faso.

I worked with them while serving as your DEC commissioner and knew John as a neighbor.

I have watched them make the tough decisions based upon the objective truth when they could have ducked them. Those decisions were intended to provide real, measurable benefit to their constituents. That’s the objective truth based on fact.

Please, Acknowledge That Schuyler Lake DOES Exist To the Editor: Almost two years after I first complained of this in a letter to your newspaper, the U.S. Congressional web site still does not recognize Schuyler Lake, N.Y. (or zip code 13457) as part of the 19th Congressional District.

Here is what I received in response to a polite email to John Faso this evening: “We’re sorry, but it appears that you live outside of New York’s 19th Congressional District. Congressional courtesy requires that each Representative be allowed to respond to his or her respective constituents. To find your Member of Congress, go to www.house.gov.”

This is not a complaint about John Faso, but residents of Schuyler Lake and who knows what other areas of the

19th district are effectively prevented from communicating to their House representative by email, which is the default communication mechanism of our era.

I have reported this to both the Congressman’s office and to the House of Representatives’ webmaster, as well as to the Oneonta Daily Star without apparent effect.

Football Dangerous; What About Boxing?

To the Editor: Concussion, their effects and prevention, is a frequent subject of discussion by those covering the National Football League, and rightly so.

What about the youth of our inner cities, who look to boxing for their livelihood? By its nature, this business requires constant hits to the head to be a competitor.

Based on what we already know about the effect of repeated hits to the head, why are the medical and sports communities silent?

Argue What You Will, Folks Are Leaving Otsego County To the Editor: The Gas Wars continued in the Oct. 4-5 editions of The Freeman’s Journal and Hometown Oneonta with several dueling op-eds and letters to the editor. Patricia Jacob opined that Oneonta grew without natural gas. On the other hand, Roger Caiazzo remembered an Oneonta that welcomed gas. At a recent meeting on the proposed decompression station, the only arguments he heard from the antis were emotional ones without rational solutions. He asked for data to support alternatives to gas that would heat buildings that need constant, on-demand energy.

Adrian Kuzminski argued that natural gas is unnecessary for the economy he (Kuzminski) envisions – a broadband world of the future. He feels investments in a gas infrastructure drain the taxpayer and are uneconomical for businesses dependent on gas. Those businesses should go where the gas is – “elsewhere.”

My thesis was, “Economic growth and JOBS that retain young families depend on affordable energy.” Governor Cuomo’s renewable energy plan leads to rates similar to California, Germany and South Australia’s. Their rates are triple ours. If we can’t attract industry now due to high rates, wait until the Guv’s plan kicks in. Welcome to the High Lonesome. Here’s the deal. One million people have packed up and left New York for other states since Governor Cuomo’s inauguration. That rate is accelerating.

An article in the Oct. 5’s Weekend Star cites a study that shows local school enrollments plummeting. In fact, several local schools are among the fastest enrollment drops statewide; five within the Top 20, eight within the Top 50. School administrators blame a lack of industry for their empty classrooms.

The young with families leave because jobs and opportunities are elsewhere. Others leave because of taxes and the high cost of living. The companies that provide jobs aren’t relocating here because high taxes, over regulation, and high overhead, with energy costs a major factor.

Mandated, subsidized, prioritized renewables will drive up the cost of energy, choke development, and limit job creation.

Jody Zakrevsky, Otsego Now CEO, was right. The 475 jobs recently lost due to a lack of abundant, affordable energy (i.e., gas) shouldn’t be looked at in a singular sense but in the plural. Those jobs represent FAMILIES (Mom, Dad, the kids) lost to Otsego County. Zakrevsky’s predecessor at Otsego Now also spoke of the necessity of gas.

That’s two for two from the professional economic-development ranks. Maybe they know something?

Finally, regarding Adrian Kuzminski’s bridge to the future via countywide broadband – it’s going to happen... about 100 miles southwest of us in Bradford County, Pa., in the heart of the Marcellus Shale play. Bradford County’s IDA, the Progress Authority, has as part of its mission a goal to balance out the cyclical nature of gas with a diversified business base, from agriculture to manufacturing to high tech. The key is broadband. To make this happen, they are in the process of setting up their own countywide broadband network. Several years in the planning and with several million dollars surplus in their treasury, they are now working with an engineering firm to supplement “dark” fiber already in place with new towers, poles, fiber-optic cable plants and switching stations, plus incorporating emergency networks and e-rate entities. The final project won’t be cheap ($11.6 million) nor complete (the perrenial “last mile” up the hollows) but it is a plausible plan.

Bradford County isn’t waiting for a government handout, a grant cycle, a Hunger Games political gimme. They are doing it themselves because they have a vibrant economy with customers waiting and money in the bank. They are doing it because they have gas.

That’s reality. The exodus of young families from our towns and villages is a reality.

“Elsewhere” is where Mr. Kuzminski wants affordable energy-dependent industries to relocate. According to Mr. Zakrevsky, that’s what they are doing. They are taking their businesses and jobs “elsewhere.” That’s what’s happening in Otsego now, a county held in check by an “environmental” ideology that ignores reality, the laws of economics, and the common good. Hello, LaLa Land!

The Issue Is Public Safety, Not Politics. Vote Devlin To the Editor: This is an important message for Democratic voters.

As the past county Democratic chairman, and a life-long Democrat, I feel compelled to get the true facts out to my fellow Democrats. I am writing to update you on our sheriff race here in Otsego County, and ask you to please DO NOT vote for the Republican running on the Democratic line, Bob Fernandez.

Here are some facts. The county, while under county Rep. Kathy Clark’s leadership, started an investigation into the sheriff concerning an incident at the jail involving his son. This incident was investigated by several outside agencies, including the state police and the Otsego County district attorney. All concluded there was no wrong doing

by the sheriff. Sheriff Devlin followed procedure to ensure a thorough investigation into his son, and followed all procedures and actually went well beyond a normal investigation.

However, Kathy Clark, Fernandez’ spouse and then Otsego County board chair, still went ahead with a countyinitiated investigation, all so she could use the information and press to aid her husband’s campaign for sheriff. I was approached two years prior to this election to see if the Democrats would consider support of her husband, so the plan was already in place to begin this election at all cost.

The truth is, Sheriff Devlin is an effective, honest, well-respected sheriff who has always conducted the business of the sheriff’s office in the best interest and safety of the residents of

our county.

Protecting Otsego County is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It is about keeping our county safe and who has the experience and qualifications to do the job well. We all agree that Sheriff Rich Devlin is that person and has proven this time and again.

While this is an important election in many ways, we hope that you will vote your conscience and your party throughout the ballot, but when it comes to electing the sheriff, we cannot allow our party’s line to be used by a disguised Republican.

When you get to the Sheriff’s race on your ballot, please join us and vote for Rich Devlin on either the Independence or Reform lines.

When Family Needed Help, Fernandez Always There To the Editor: This letter is not only to inform you of the greatness Bob Fernandez will have on our county, but also a public thank you to the Fernandez family for their incredible impact they have made on my life. His smile, radiant personality and love for those around him has influenced so many lives, including mine!

I grew up with the Fernandez family as neighbors, which then quickly grew into a lifelong friendship since the age of 5. I was 14 when my Father passed away, and the Fernandez family took me in as one of their own.

While my mother spent her time with

my father in the hospital, Bob Fernandez helped me continue schooling and gave me the ability to continue frequent hospital visits. For two weeks, Bob and his wife, Kathy, drove 12 hours on multiple occasions to make that happen.

They were by my family’s side when receiving the dreadful news. They helped in every way possible!

It didn’t end there. More than a decade later, to say the least, Bob Fernandez is always one call away from helping my mother out of ditch in a terrible snow storm (putting his life at risk) and cleaning her driveway when he notices no one is there to do it for her.

All these things he has done for our family and I’m certain for many others, has been to no convenience for him, but only out of the purest and deepest part of his heart. You name it, and we have no hesitation to reach out to Bob, as he is the most reliable, trustworthy, genuine soul our family has ever had the pleasure to encounter.

Vote for Bob Fernandez! Our county deserves a sheriff who puts the concerns of others before his own. On November 6th, I urge you to cast your vote for Bob Fernandez. A sheriff we can be proud of.

We need to hold Trump accountable for the numerous lies he has told since becoming POTUS. America stands for real

principles and values, but now we are a country that has sold out to the highest bidder and the loudest voice in the room because of one man, special interests, and a spineless Congress. It’s a shame but that’s the reality in the Trump area and that needs to change.

We can reverse this ugly and divisive period during the midterms if we get out and vote. Lies on a daily basis are unacceptable and cannot be ignored any longer. We need truth for truth’s sake, not for Trump’s sake.

On Sunday, Oct. 21, the deconsecrated church found new life as the Light of Heart Sanctuary, a community center, sharing their stories and the history of the church.

“It’s such a beautiful place for the community to come together,” said Nettie Jeanie Scarzafava, the former Otsego County judge and founder of the SOL Center in Oneonta. “It’s great to see that individuals are able to work together to create something collaborative instead of competitive.”

Cheryl Rosen, the Spring House Spa’s owner, last year noticed the church was for sale and began conversations with her friend Yvonne Gardner. She also connected with Petry, and with Scarzafava.

“Cheryl was giving me a massage!” said Scarzafava.

“She was talking about how she had done a changingconsciousness workshop in Saratoga and was lamenting that there wasn’t anything closer. I sat right up and told her to get me a piece of paper and a pencil and came up with some questions for her to ask – within three days, she knew who owned it, the cost, the zoning and everything else we needed to know!”

“It became very clear that we had to do something with this building,” said Petry. “We were inspired to bring forward the sense of kindness and integrity, the connection this church had

to only a handful of parishioners, they continued meeting up until the building was purchased, having their last service on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017.

“We started with a gratitude ceremony,” said Petry.

“These women held the church, and this is a passage.”

But after the purchase, Petry and the others found there wasn’t much they had to change or update.

The parishioners had cared for it lovingly, keeping the original tin ceiling, purple and clear stained glass, and a mural of a dove with an olive branch above the altar.

Mary Fines of Fine Finishes, Cooperstown, updated the mural, matching the purple hues in the sky to the windows, and building out the dove’s wing for a 3D effect.

In 1987, an addition to the chapel was built, including new bathrooms and a kitchen, which will allow the Light of Heart to serve food during their programming. Additionally, the pews will be unbolted from the floor so they can be moved throughout the room as necessary for programming.

Skeeter-Eater May Be Simple, But It Works, Inventor Says

Gerry Welch holds up a sample of a new project he’s working on: a sterile mask that, using ultraviolet light, allows easier breathing for personnel in operating rooms.

Scatter a dozen Skeeter-Eaters around the yard, and you can see how Gerry Welch’s device can quickly begin eradicating thousands of the pesky, blood-drawing tiny pests that buzz, everywhere summers around here.

“I like things simple,” he said.

Gerry is a member of Cooperstown’s well-known Welch family. He is one of four brothers and two sisters, the children of Alva Welch, who operated a Chevy dealership at the lighthouse where Mirabito’s is now, and his wife Mildred. He was born in the stone passenger depot behind Bruce Hall, which was the family’s home at the time.

After a series of adventures and misadventures, as he describes them, he returned to his hometown and, for 17 years, was concierge at The Otesaga.

He bought what was then a simple

one-room camp at Five Mile Point for $13,000 in 1983, and little by little improved it to today’s delightful state.

Since 2001, he has run a boat-rental business.

He first got an inkling of his inventive side in the mid-1980s, when one of his brothers showed up with a wind sail designed to help skaters glide speedily up and down ice-covered Otsego Lake. It was so powerful, however, it dragged skaters off their feet.

Gerry went back to the house and, from a few slats, put together a wind sail about half the size that’s just right.

Even today, he’ll often glide down the lake to Cooperstown, and hitch a ride home with Geri Dobler, the Doubleday Café bartender who is his longtime sweetheart.

Before his eureka moment, he had been tinkering with mosquito traps for a while, after discovering commercial devices, using pesticides or ultraviolet light, can cost from $39 to as much as $1,000.

He sought to develop an ultraviolet device of his own, but abandoned it as too complicated.

The Skeeter-Eater – patent now pending, through the guidance of Jay R. Yablon, the Schenectady patent lawyer – is ready for production.

Gerry’s sent a letter to Victor Mousetraps, “Outsmarting Rodents Since 1898,” which already produces the Mosquito Magnet.

Welch envisions the final product as a plastic container with an opaque top and a snap-on cap. He’s even considered ordering a mold that would allow him to begin production himself.

Estimated price: under $10.

The mosquito had found its way in.

It simply couldn’t find its way out.

Eureka! And the idea of the Skeeter-Eater was born.

Much tinkering and experimenting followed. And the other day was the result, sitting on a table in his secondfloor wood-paneled and plate-glassed living room.

It’s a half-filled five-gallon jar, covered with duct tape about halfway up. The jar’s mouth is covered with a small screen and, in the middle of the screen, there’s a small hole.

“I like simple,” he said.

It works like this. A female mosquito is drawn by the stagnant water in the jar through the hole in the screen, lays its larvae, then tries to fly away, only to bump into the glass sides of the jar.

Eventually, exhausted, the mosquito drowns and sinks to the bottom of the jar, followed by its larvae. The tiny cadavers make the water even more stagnant, and thus more appealing to other mosquitos.

The effectiveness expands exponentially.

Male mosquitos are fine, sure – one less mosquito. But the trap removes them merely one at a time.

With females, “you’re wiping out their entire generation,” the inventor said – thousands over a single insect’s lifespan.

“It’s called: Nip it in the bud,” Welch said.

After mating once, the typical female mosquito will lay 100 eggs within three days, and will repeat that process twice.

IN MEMORIAM Jon Osborn, 75, Oneonta; Retired Trooper, Former Elks Exalted Ruler ONEONTA – Reginald “Jon” Davis Osborn, 75, a retired state trooper and past exalted ruler of the Oneonta Elks, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, at his home in Crystal River, Fla., surrounded by his children.

Jon was born March 26, 1943, at Oneonta’s Parshall Hospital to Warren and Mildred (Reed) Osborn.

Raised in South Valley, Jon graduated from Cherry Valley Central School in 1960. He earned a degree in business administration from SUNY Cobleskill in 1962, and joined the Army Re-

serves in 1965, retiring in 1993 as a major.

Jon joined the New York State Police in October 1966, retiring in November 1986. For 12 years, he was a firearms instructor.

On retiring, Jon owned and operated Osborn Lawn Care for several years. He fully retired in 2003 after driving motor coaches for several area businesses, including Pathfinder Coach lines, OPT and Oneonta Bus Lines.

He spent his early retirement improving and maintaining the Susquehanna Trail Camp Ground with his wife, until moving to

He was an avid NASCAR fan and John Deere collector, enjoying his free time puttering in his garage and spending time with family and friends.

Kim (Jim) Thomas of Richmond, Va., Kyle (Stacy) Osborn of Oneonta, Matt (Courtney) Brower of Crystal River; as well as grandchildren, Addison, Connor, Brynn and Keely Thomas, Jon and Lukas Osborn and Bristol and Kelsey Brower.

He is also survived by his wife, Ann Osborn of Crystal River; former wife Pamela Osborn of Richmond, Va.; sister Marlene (Walter) Thompson of Worcester; Aunt Wanda Welbert, also of Worcester; as well as in-laws Wes (Linda) St. Onge of Beverly Hills, Fla.; and several

cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jon’s family would like to thank his friends and neighbors, especially Rick Hodges, Johnny Hudgins, Lauren “Larry” Epps and Victor Nadal who helped in countless ways. Your presence, care and thoughtfulness was a great comfort to both Jon and his family and is greatly appreciated.

A private burial will take place in The Plains Cemetery, Oneonta, at the convenience of the family.

Louis R. Kilts, 74; Oneontan Worked In Maintenance MOHAWK – Louis R. Kilts, 74, an Oneonta native who leaves several survivors in Otsego County, died Friday Oct. 12, 2018, at Bassett Hospital.

Louis was born on Jan. 28, 1944, in Oneonta to Earl R. Kilts and Lilian Anderson Kilts.

He worked in maintenance throughout his life.

He had a lifelong fascination with Indian lore and was interested in wolves, electronics of every kind, and computers. He was a master at taking things apart and reassembling them so they worked better than

before.

Louis is survived by his sons, Richard Stevens (Christine) of Sidney and William Kilts (Omi Collette) of Clinton, as well as his grandchildren, among them his granddaughter Brandy O’Connor of Sidney. Also, five siblings, Ruby Kilts of Cherry Valley and her children, Angelica Rumble (Lonnie) of Ilion and Tiffany Crim (James Chadwell) of Cherry Valley; Ruth Kilts of Florida and her children, Jason Schorer (Raelynn) of Newport, Herkimer County,

Cheri Sparks (Heath) of Ohio, and Christopher Schorer (April) of Norwich; Donna Kilts of Fort. Plain and her children, Jacky Roe (Ashley) of Frankfort, Jesse Cresong (Renae) of Fort Plain, Tana Cresong of Herkimer, and Jeremy Condon of Herkimer; Denise Kilts Stockigt of Herkimer and her children, Danny Stockigt (Tab), Lawrence Stockigt (Cassandra) of North Carolina, Juanita Stockigt of Herkimer, and Michael Stockigt (Veronica) of Richfield Springs; and

John Kilts of Mohawk, and his children, Tiesha (David) Comstock of Mohawk and Jennifer Jean Kilts of Cherry Valley.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings Robert, Alberta, Joanne, Earl (“Junior”), Helen Rose, James, and Tina.

Graveside services and burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Westville Cemetery, Westville.

Kitty Oliver, 92; Scot Had Many Oneonta Friends ONEONTA – Kitty Oliver, 92, passed away on Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, at St. Margaret’s Care Home in Hawick, Scotland, leaving many friends behind in Kitty Oliver Oneonta.

She was born Jan. 6, 1925, in Hawick, Scotland. She was an outstanding athlete in her youth and was a high school track and field champion.

The mid 1990s brought her on the first of many visits to Oneonta, to see her family.

Over the years she formed many friendships in the area and became a familiar visitor.

Some of her favorite spots at the time included Elena’s Bakery, Iannelli’s Restaurant, The Autumn Café, The Fly Creek Cider Mill and The Otesaga. In her later years, she became heavily involved in local arts and volunteer work.

She is survived by her son, Cameron Oliver; her daughter-in-law, Susan Binney; her two grandsons, Ian and Finlay Oliver; along with many cherished friends she made while visiting New York.

A memorial service will be held for Kitty at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 3, at St. James Church, 305 Main Street in Oneonta with Father Kenneth Hunter officiating.

A reception immediately following the service will be held at the church. The family invites you to come and share memories of a wellloved woman.

Argumentative Sheriff’s Debate Rattles LVW Organizers

The organizer repeated the League’s policy: “We do not allow personal attacks.” However, she suggested there might have been ways to address each candidate’s main Achilles heel without making it personal.

Devlin has been bedeviled with allegations that his prison-guard son, Ros, threatened to create incidents at schools in Milford and Oneonta as a cover to committing suicide in front of a disciplining supervisor.

Fernandez has been questioned about his spouse, Kathy Clark, R-Otego, who chaired the county board until last January and frequently jousted with Devlin in advance of her husband’s announcement he’s running for the office.

Perhaps, Murray said, a question could have been couched in terms of what appropriate humanresources policies each candidate would consider to prevent these kinds of conflicts from occurring.

“I don’t know if we’ve had a sheriff’s debate before,” she continued. (The sheriff hasn’t been challenged since his first race, in 2006, against another retired state troopers, Kenneth W. “Skip” Beijen.)

“So, the two candidates may have been naïve about the way they asked questions.”

Regardless, Fernandez started strong with repeating “I’m outraged” several times in his opening remarks, where he recounted the allegations against the Devlin son.

But Devlin ended strong, reading a surprise letter he said was written by a departing deputy exonerating the sheriff’s son. “As I leave for another opportunity, I feel I must clear the air on an alleged incident that occurred on Jan. 5, 2017,” Devlin read during his closing remarks.

“I was in the room when this incident allegedly occurred.

“At no time did Ros Devlin make any statements that have been alleged.”

Asked about the Raso letter as the debate broke up a couple of minutes later, Fernandez answered, “B*** S***.” He went on to say that the letter could have been extracted under pressure, in exchange for a good

reference, and noted it wasn’t given under oath.

The evening quickly gained momentum as Fernandez’ “I’m outraged” remarks brought forth loud applause, prohibiting League rules. Devlin shot back a reference to “witch hunt by your wife,” further applause erupted, prompting Heim to say, “We can’t have that going on all night. If it does, we are going to end it.”

Devlin and Fernandez then tackled several questions from the audience and a media panel, on topics like the heroin epidemic and the Safe Act. Both agreed on trying to expand the road patrol.

When Fernandez said he’d been told by Oneonta agencies that insuffi-

cient services were being provided to addicts and people with disabilities in jail, Devlin erupted, “That’s a lie.”

In discussing his desire to bring back the boat patrol, Devlin remarked, “that program was cut under your wife.”

On putting a “resource officer” – a deputy – on duty in BOCES’ Otsego Area Occupational Center in Milford, Fernandez asked whether he favored expanding the program to all schools in the county, or “only in your hometown.”

Later, Fernandez noted that the county sheriff’s department had lost its accreditation under Devlin. The sheriff responded it was for one reason: an insufficient interrogation

room, and the county board under Clark’s leadership had declined to fund the upgrade for five years.

With a new county chair as of last January, the funding has been approved, the work will be done and Devlin said he expected the department will get its accreditation back.

While Devlin maintained a sober demeanor, Fernandez winked to audience members, raised his eyebrows, appeared to smirk, and referred to the sheriff only as “Mr. Devlin.” At one point, even he recognized this, noting, “I don’t want to appear flippant.”

Each candidate was given two minutes to respond to questions, and one minute to rebut. With Fernandez continuing to jump in while Devlin rebutted, Heim again cautioned, “We can’t have this back and forth. It’s not what we’re here for.”

A few minutes later, Murray herself felt compelled to jump in, warning the debaters against “personal attacks.” If they continued, Murray said, “We’ll just close things down and send everybody home.”

Heim then challenged audience members, “Does anybody want to come up here and take this over?”

And Tom Leiber, the Oaksville maker of fine guitars and a pal of Fernandez since their high school days on Long Island, jumped up and offered to do so.

2nd Of Oneonta’s Bellinger Playing In World Series SERIES/From A1 Dodgers – and son and grandson of Oneontans – began World Series play against the Red Sox in historic Fenway Park in Boston.

His father, Clay Bellinger, was in the World Series almost 20 years ago as a Yankee playing against the Mets in Yankee stadium.

“Clay and I keep up, especially when Cody hits that homerun and then got MVP,” said Oneonta High School Athletic Director Joe Hughes, who coached the father at OHS. “A few years back Clay came to play in the Old-

While Clay Bellinger raised his family in Arizona, Penny Bellinger, Cody’s grandmother, still lives in Oneonta.

“Clay was a great example for Cody,” Penny said of her son. “He was playing professional baseball while the kids were growing up.

It took Clay 10 years to get to the Major Leagues; it only took Cody four years.

I think that is because Clay was already there.”

According to Penny, her son Clay played baseball since he was a toddler.

“It was just something he always wanted to do,” Penny said. “It makes sense

that Cody would play baseball; his younger brother, Cole, too. He (Cole) just got drafted with the San Diego Padres.”

Clay grew up in Oneonta.

As a young baseball enthusiast, he played in several leagues, including a stint with the Cortland Apples one summer when he was playing Little League.
