UNY Oneonta is seeking clothing, jewelry and makeup donations as part of their “Rags to Rainbows: An Inclusive Pop-Up Thrift Shop” on Monday, Nov. 19 in the Hunt Union ballroom.

The thrift shop aims to help people find genderaffirming clothing in a safe, non-judgmental shopping environment.

Donations may be dropped off on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Hunt Union. Since, Morris and Norton have used the perfume daily, and “think of each other fondly each morning – and the study of the presidency,” she said.

It revealed a more serious, focused side, too.

A divorced mother of three who years before had turned down an appointment to West Point, she – with help from mom Betty – got a San Diego U degree, joined the University of Redlands in 1996 and rose to dean of arts & science within a decade. In less than two decades was provost & vice president at Fort Lewis College in Colorado.

When she applied for SUNY Oneonta’s top job, her vita was in a tall a stack – #147 – but it jumped out, College Council Chairman Patrick Brown told the 1,000 faculty, staff, students and well-wishers from the community in the Dewar Arena ceremony.

In preparing his remarks,

SUNY Chancellor Kristin M. Johnson places the ceremonial chains of office around President Morris’ shoulders.

Brown said, “I looked at the notes I made when I first reviewed the candidate resumes. Of course, they were all numbers then. Next to candidate 147 I wrote a single word — grit.”

“Barbara Morris’ story is one of struggle and overcoming cultural and economic barriers and it is one of persistence and ultimate triumph,” he said. He recalled the interview, and that all her answers

focused on students, “especially the student who might not fit in; who was, like myself, the first in the family to attend college,” said Brown, a partner in his own Albany-area law firm.

“This natural, authentic, student-centered approach is what led the search committee to conclude this is a woman who GETS SUNY Oneonta.”

That sensibility toward inclu-

sion was reflected in Saturday’s entertainment: the XClusive Dance Crew’s contemporary performance, the West African Drum Ensemble’s traditional Ghanaian “Gota,” and the college’s World Chorus singing the Javanese “Luk Luk Lumbu,” translated as “The Bending Taro Leaves.”

All of this was restated in SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson remarks that preceded the formal installation, from Morris’ “misspent youth,” her “fierce advocacy,” her intention to prepare students to work toward “a more just, humane and sustainable world.”

The two-hour ceremony included “greetings” to the new president from politicians (state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, and Mayor Gary Herzig), college leaders (Faculty Senate chair William R. Wilkerson, Graig Eichler from business services, and Tim Nolan, Student Association President), to friends like Norton.

A highlight was Congressman Pete Aguilar, Democrat from Redlands, a one-time Morris

student. “Barbara wasn’t very imposing,” he remembered.

“She’s tiny in stature and rarely raised her voice in the classroom.

But she was deadly with a red pen in her hand. I have the transcript to prove it. But she connected with her students through the power of storytelling and just being honest.”

Throughout the ceremony, the usually cheerful Morris wore a somber demeanor, perhaps reflecting on the distance traveled or the challenges of the past few days, a phone hoax that upset some of the campus community.

After a talk that thanked her mother, her three children, and friends and wellwishers, she ended on a serious note: “We have endured, and we have served. We will not be silent, and we are determined to make the path easier for those who chose to join us,” she said. “Let us stand together not only as worthy examples but as warriors for change for our students.”

Now with her usual broad smile, she led the recessional through the applauding auditorium.

fter the week that was, Barbara Jean Morris, SUNY Oneonta’s new president, must have heard those words with mixed feelings.

Just three days before, a threat to shoot up the campus – it turned out to be a hoax – had shaken the college community.

Earlier this semester in a school year that is barely month old, a SUNY Oneonta student took his own life.

Neither of these happenings was the new president’s fault, yet they underscore the solemnity of what Dr. Morris is taking on: The responsibility for 6,000 students and 1,000 staff and faculty members.

In Supporting Trump Inquiry, Delgado Doing As He Should To the Editor: You ask in last week’s edition: “Is Congressman Risking His Reelection Over Impeachment?”

Antonio Delgado states that he made his decision to vote for an inquiry into articles of impeachment because he “...took an oath before God and his fellow citizens to uphold the Constitution of the United States.” That’s what we elected him to do.

We didn’t elect him to leave his conscience and good judgment at home and do whatever it takes to get reelected in 2020.

Congressman Delgado hasn’t stopped serving our Congressional district well.

overnor Cuomo banned fracking in New York State. His environmental department backed him up with several reasons.

• Fracking could and did pollute.

With particulate matter. And with methane and organic chemicals.

• Fracking could and did contaminate drinking water. With methane and fracking fluids. Because of improper wells.

• Fracking contaminated soils and water by way of surface spills. It also caused earthquakes.

A fancy institute weighed in by pooh-poohing the so-called economic

boom fracking brings. The promised jobs don’t come in the number that frackers promise. Studies that describe the boom are flawed.

Meanwhile… comes another TOM study published MORGAN in a big science journal. Its results are the opposite of what New York’s environmental officials declared.

The study was funded by the

National Science Foundation and U.S. Geological Survey. Researchers from Penn State studied 21,000 water samples from areas near gas and oil wells in their state.

They found virtually zero methane contamination of the water. (Methane occurs naturally in lots of the state’s groundwater.)

The same researchers earlier studied 11,000 samples of water. From near 1,400 gas wells in just one county.

150 Years Ago

The great storm which occurred here on the second and third of the month extended over several States – south beyond Washington and north and west into the British territory. Property to the amount of millions was destroyed and quite a number of lives lost, while shipping along the coast suffered very much. Hundreds of cattle, sheep and swine were carried into the streams and drowned, In the Hudson and other navigable rivers the boats were obliged to lay by on account of the great quantities of logs, timber, &c., floating down. Last Sunday, the third successive Sunday, it again rained all day. The streams and river here were high Monday morning, but not a flood. We see by the Albany papers that the rise in the river before twelve o’clock Sunday night was five feet, and the merchants began to move their goods to the upper stories.

125 Years Ago

Local & Regional: H.G. Bishop, formerly of Oneonta, has bought off the Oneonta Press, and took possession last week.

Stamford now has a local telephone line with 21 subscribers. The subscribers not only have the advantages about the village, but they all connect with the Delhi, Grand Gorge, Harpersfield and Jefferson lines.

Ex-Governor Cornell is out with the usual anti-election statements about the fearful increase of taxation under Democratic rule. He alleges that the state taxes have been increased nearly 100 percent. This is the annual chronic nonsense of Republican leaders. However, Delaware County is not weighted down with Democratic misrule. In 1882, the tax budget for Delaware County was $17,600. Under Republican rule it steadily increased, until in 1893 it was $63,800, an increase of nearly 400 percent.

Meanwhile the increase in population has risen only about 5 percent.

Speaking to members of Oneonta’s

Rotary Club at the Hotel Oneonta yesterday afternoon, Bishop G. Ashton Oldham of the Episcopal Diocese of Albany said “With the determination to stay out of Europe’s conflict, I am in complete agreement – but for a different motive than that advanced by some of our leaders who seek the protection of our skins and our possessions, but rather because I want to see America ready to serve after the war in the leadership toward a lasting peace.” The Bishop commented further on the war and its effect on churches saying “the effect of war on our churches is feared by many who point out that they suffered during the last war because each side claimed that the church was on its side. However, that there is any war simply demonstrates that the church does not have the influence it should have upon governments, for every church and every denomination is most active in the cause of peace. Perhaps the fault lies in large part with the church which is too material and not sacrificial enough.”

Bradenton, Florida – The home an elderly Negro woman was building in a new white neighborhood has been damaged by fire and authorities say the blaze was set deliberately.

The woman, 67-year-old Elizabeth Jenkins has owned a 2.5 acre tract west of Bradenton since 1916. She has lived in one house there for 43 years and was building a new frame house nearby. She planned to move into the new house in a few weeks. Miss Jenkins’ property is surrounded by a fashionable white neighborhood which has been developed during the past two or three years.

Sheriff Roy Baden said the woman had asked $20,000 for her land. But, when developers offered to meet her price, she hiked the figure to $40,000 and later to $50,000 October 1959

A big Chamber of Commerce study estimates fracking added $13 billion to the state’s GDP. And $7 billion in new wages.

Heartland cites other studies that debunk the “myths” that fracking pollutes water or air. It assures us that major fracking states of Pennsylvania and Texas have lower rates of asthma, birth defects and cancer than many

states that have no fracking.

And the institute cites studies that claim earthquakes in fracking areas are of little significance.

I imagine some readers are Googling away already. They want to prove or disprove one side of this issue or the other.

It is a pity that it is impossible to find the truth in this and other vital matters. After all, a lot of Upstaters would love to see an economic boom. Even if it was half what Pennsylvania’s is.

The only booms upstate has experienced lately have come during hunting season.

My grandfather reckoned the truth was usually halfway between the opposing arguments.

Maybe that is where it is.

In the future maybe we will use artificial intelligence computers to resolve such issues.

One side will input its data.

The computer will spit it back as bull-tweedy. It will proclaim the other side’s argument worthy of five stars.

Yeah, but you can’t trust that robot. It was made by XYZ Company. Its pension fund owns energy stocks!

A wallet stolen during a recent robbery was recovered according to Oneonta police sources. In the past three weeks, three incidents of armed robbery were reported to police, compared to two robberies in all of 1998. “To have this number reported in this short a time is alarming,” said Oneonta Detective Sgt. Joseph Redmond. “People should exercise caution as in everything they do in life.” No one was hurt in the armed robbery incidents, during which wallets, cash, and keys were stolen, police said. At about 3:20 a.m. October 2, three people walking near 218 Chestnut Street told police they were robbed by two skimasked men with handguns. Minutes later on West Street, another man was accosted by two men, one with a handgun. And, a man near Potter and Maple streets reported being robbed about an hour later, police said. Previously, a man told police someone had held a knife to his throat at about 3:15 a.m., September 23 while he was walking on Myrtle Avenue.

When Chad Hall, a farmboy from Walton, was studying electrical mechanical design at SUNY Delhi, he figured he get a job as a draftsman, maybe in a some local firm. And he did, at Oneonta’s Custom Electronics. But instead of a job, Hall had found himself a launching pad.

Today, a mere 34, he’s COO of Custom Electronics’ spinoff Ioxus, jetting all over the country, to Korea, to Europe, pressing the cutting edge of ultracapacitors, a technology that, quite simply, could change the

Poverty – It’s All Around Us Editor’s Note: Larry Bennett, Brewery Ommegang’s recently retired creative director who is much active in community causes, joins The Freeman’s Journal and Hometown Oneonta in this edition as a regular columnist.

L

ast Saturday, Oct. 5, 200 people attended a forum in Oneonta, “Living with Dignity and the Crisis of Poverty in Otsego and Delaware Counties.”

Over three hours, a dozen topics were discussed, but the speakers LARRY focused on BENNETT three impor-

tant actions we can all take: 1. Help raise awareness of poverty in our counties.

2. Try to understand and respect the dignity to the poor.

3. Personally commit to assisting those in need.

Here’s some of what I learned.

of Otsego and Delaware counties (combined population 102,000) live under economic duress.

Single mothers are 38 percent of the poor in Otsego County; they are 54 percent in Delaware County. Take a moment and try to imagine a single mother living in poverty – trying to keep a job while housing, feeding, educating, and looking after the health of her children. Surely this is not a blueprint for success.

I know some think poor people

are lazy, alcoholic or drug addicted, people who make bad choices and sponge off others. Sure, a few game the system, but most do not.

Some lost jobs through no fault of their own, or became too ill to work. Some are permanently disabled, or are simply too old to work. Some have mental health issues. Some have simply given up after years of fruitless struggle.

EDITORIAL: Installation Signals Revolution’s Won. How Can We Enjoy Victory?

EDITORIAL/From A4 newest of her 64 college presidents. Perhaps then, but that’s not the sense you get about Barbara Jean Morris today – words like “diplomatic,” “upbeat,” “human” come to mind.

The sense of nostalgia was further evoked by her San Diego university dean and friend Noelle Norton’s whimsical story about the two dousing themselves in perfume back in the 1990s before delivering a paper, “Faith and Sex: Presidents Under Pressure,” at a presumably mostly white, male symposium in Boston in the 1990s.

Several speakers remarked Morris is SUNY Oneonta’s second female president. When is that no longer news? The third?

The seventh?

• You might have come away feeling Barbara Jean Morris’ tenure won’t be – or shouldn’t be – about the celebrated rise of women (and blacks and other formerly outcast minorities) over the past half-century.

Ask anybody at Morris’ installation. The faculty in the processional was mostly women, with many minorities of both sexes. Chancellor Johnson is an openly gay woman, as are four SUNY campus presidents.

Students and audience members fully represented a cross-section of the United States as is and where it’s going.

Despite the public debate about race, hate, immigration, white supremacy, looking around the

Dewar Arena the other day, you had to conclude the battle is won.

If anything, over-won: 60 percent of SUNY Oneonta’s students are women, compared to 40 percent men; nationally, it was 56-44 in 2015. Is it time to look for a new balance?

Some would argue today’s much-remarked-upon national divide can be blamed, to large degree, on our colleges and universities, with the replacement of the Western Canon with gender and ethnic studies, and the exaltation of PC. Now, why shouldn’t higher education in general, and SUNY Oneonta – and Hartwick College – in particular, play a role in building a new synthesis based on acceptance of the new real-

ity? To wit, we are living in a multi-ethnic nation, where parity between sexes and among genders is widely accepted.

The revolution is over. It’s won.

• When she had to be, Dr. Morris may indeed have been competitive, fearless and even fierce. Now, “?her diplomacy, optimism and humanity will be more in demand.

Her new 13-word mission statement for SUNY Oneonta was much remarked upon at her installation: “We nurture a community where students grow intellectually, thrive socially and live purposefully.”

With a little adjustment, it sounds like a workable foundation for American society at large.

BENNETT: Poverty Can Lead To Seclusion, Fear And Anger BENNETT/From A5 can lead to poor health, divorce, child abuse, domestic violence, and even suicide, yet being poor also means a loss of human dignity, making everything worse.

Poverty can also lead to seclusion, fear, and anger. The poor become invisible to the rest of us. Communities shun them.

Businesses turn them away.

As we go about our own busy lives, it’s too easy to overlook others’ needs for shelter, food, clothing, and health care.

One thing we should try to

understand is that poor people are much like us. Except, for them, life may have never gone right, or may have recently gone terribly wrong. We still need to pay attention and respect their human dignity. This is an important step to providing real help.

What about government programs? The truth is they help, but are at best a makeshift bridge to hopefully better times. Federal and state assistance, SNAP benefits, and other programs can keep the bottom from falling out, but they are certainly not a step up the

economic ladder. Beyond government – federal, state or local – we as individuals need to step up.

First, resolve to treat all people with respect. Don’t make quick judgements. That young guy in old jeans and dirty sweatshirt, taking tickets in the parking lot, may be a future Congressman like Antonio Delgado. That teenaged girl with hostility, anger issues and no apparent future may be a future college professor, like Dr. Karen Joest. One thing is certain – no one thrives by being disrespected.

There are many tangible ways

individuals can help. Many towns have food pantries. Volunteer to staff them or deliver food to people who can’t drive. Many churches offer free meals. Help cook, serve, clean up.

Locally, our schools already provide free meals to 48 percent of Otsego school children and 63 percent of Delaware children. But even then, it helps feed children for only nine months out of 12.

Community centers may offer programs for the poor, the very young, or old. Volunteer to help staff their programs.

Habitat for Humanity has an Oneonta office (607-432-7874) and needs volunteers for management jobs, for construction, for providing lunches, and more.

Finally, consider mentoring a child who needs attention, and be assured you will both benefit. If you understand, respect, and help others all our lives will be better for it. Please give of your time and your heart wherever you can.

The threat was soon discovered to be a hoax – the phone had been hacked.

When police located her, she was working with the college’s Information Technology Services to get it fixed. She was not placed under arrest and no charges were filed.

“All signs point to this student being the victim of a cyber-crime,” said Campus Police Chief Jennifer Fila.

No suspects have been identified, and city Police Chief Doug Brenner believes that the student may have been a victim of a phishing scam, which allowed the suspect access to her phone.

“These cases are difficult,” he said. “You have to look for IP addresses, and sometimes, those go into foreign countries.”

But now, the campus is assessing how they can better respond to threats. “We were fortunate to be able to identify problems in the wake of a situation where no one was injured,” said Hal Legg, SUNY chief communication & marketing officer.

On Friday, Oct. 4, college President Barbara Jean Morris announced that the campus would no longer use the siren to signify “All Clear,” which had caused uncertainty Wednesday.

“It’s fair to say that many members of our campus community may not know what to do when they hear the siren,” said Legg.

The siren has three settings, each outlined in the emergency response guidelines given to students.

“The first, a five-second tone, is a test,” said Legg. “The second, a three-minute tone, is an alarm. The third, a oneminute tone is the all clear.

But if they don’t understand it, it’s not worth using.”

Many of the doors on campus don’t lock, Legg said, and only some classrooms have the automatic lockdown button installed.

According to Legg, Lachlan Squair, Chief of Facilities and Safety, will soon begin looking at what it would take to upgrade the buildings, possibly accelerating the planned timetable.

Additionally, the NYAlerts system that students can sign up for in case of emergency failed to deliver messages to all students.

“We’re looking into why that didn’t work the way it had in previous test scenarios,” said Legg.

Faculty members were not required to undergo active shooter training, although many did when it was offered last April. “We will be offering it again,” said Legg.

Additionally, in 2021, Medicare is going to start paying for the capacity Helios is developing, Ayres said.

Expanding its potential patient base from 140,000 people in the three counties to 600,000 in eight counties will further reduce Helios’ costs, particularly overhead – administration, HR, tech

Helios’ journey to the renaming ceremony began in 2017 when Ayres returned from West Virginia for his current job and observed a grim reality: The hospice care industry was in steep decline, especially in New York State. “Seventy percent of the state’s hospices were losing money and we are one of them,� Ayres said. “We couldn’t keep doing the same thing the same way and expect to survive.�

The state ranked 49th in the country for hospice utilization, had the highest cost for Medicare, and had more people dying in ICUs than in any other state. “At the same time, there is a tremendous demand for both hospice and palliative care here. Sixty percent of the state population has chronic diseases and 40 percent have two or more of them,� Ayres said. “And 23 percent of the population is 65 and older and enrolled in Medicare and Delaware is the fastest aging county in the state.�

But the average length of a hospice stay was 17 days.

So Catskill Hospice partnered with the Leatherstocking Collaborative Health Partners, a Bassett affiliate, on a year-long study giving 70 patients the service Helios

The results were astonishing, Ayres said. “We had multiple health professionals do multiple acute care visits of the patients for a year and were able to reduce their acute-care utilization by 80 percent,� he said. “And we saw costs for their care – the most expensive type of care – go down 35 percent.�

The study ended in June, and the results has enabled the new Helios to implement this new care and business model.

His staff, many of them new hires, go to patients’ homes to care for them, any day of the week instead of a Monday-Friday model.

Our nurses get great satisfac tion in engaging one-on-one with patients and helping them in the most difficult times of their lives,� he said. “They are computer literate and engaged in innovation – the right people at the right time.�

The change was accompanied by a big reduction in overhead. Helios now has one office, on the River Street Extension, instead of six. And health insurers are paying Helios to care for patients because treating patients at home means fewer hospital visits, the most expensive component of healthcare. “We can monitor patients’ health at home better than if they rely on a hospital for care,� said Ayres. “We help them take their medicine on time and check their blood pressure to see if they have hypertension, which can save a trip to the emergency room.�

Helios staff will also spot problems a hospital exam might not catch, such as food insecurity or burning wood to heat their homes.

they’d blend with the neighborhood and show that I’d maintain the essence of the village,� said Bret Meckel. “Are you going to hold them to the same standards as you hold the rest of us?�

Following the public comment, Steven Wilson, Bohler Engineering, presented the updated plans to the board.

“It’s always good to hear comments,� he said. “Everyone was passionate but civil.�

Among the changes he made since the last meeting were to remove brick wrapping around the bottom of the building, as well as muting the color palette.

However, problems remained. “It’s a mishmash

of styles,� said chairman Liz Callahan. “It’s up to you what style in the neighborhood you’d like to choose to match.�

The brand wall, which Callahan had called “a glaring detraction� when the first plans were proposed on Tuesday, Sept. 19, remained in the drawing, much to the

board’s chagrin. “It’s never going to become something we like,� she said. “It’s definitely not compatible with the aesthetic of the neighborhood, and it thumbs its nose at the character of the village.�

In presenting a design that showed the building in the neighborhood, Wilson only showed the view from Route 28, without accounting for the neighboring homes or incorporating landscaping into the design. “We need to have a clear understanding of the proposed scale in the context,� Callahan said.

In addition to having to pass HPARB, the plans must also pass the village Planning Board, which has ordered that the project undergo a traffic study.

HPARB declined to accept the application as complete and asked Wilson to return again with a new set of plans. “And we ask that the brand wall not be part of the package,� warned Callahan.

But by the time Caicedo got to Buffalo, he had “10 or 15 missed calls� on his pager.

When he called his station, he learned Trooper Parisian had been shot and killed trying to foil an armed robbery at the Great American on Southside. “He had such pride in his hometown,� said Caicedo. “He was always telling us we had to come visit. And we finally did – for his funeral.�

Caicedo was told to report to Oneonta to work on the case, and within a few days, the killer, Colin Hyde, a former Great American employee, was captured in Colorado. “By the time we laid Ricky to rest, they had caught his killer,� he said. “It was good closure for the family.�

But his involvement with Ricky didn’t end there. “I stayed in touch with the family and ran in the first Pit Run,� he said. “And here we are, 26 years later!�

This year, 650 runners took the streets for the 5K and 10K, with 400 walking the two-mile stroll. “The elite runners were at the Wineglass Marathon in Corning,� said Ricky’s widow Deb Parisian. “But that just gave the local runners a chance to shine!�

Since 1994, Caicedo missed the Pit Run only once. “I was in Puerto Rico in 2017 when Hurricane Maria hit,� he said. “I was stranded for two weeks. I was so upset that I had to miss the race!�

a new friend. “I was at a car show in September and there was an animal rescue organi-

zation that had some dogs and cats for adoption,� he said. “I took a picture of one and sent it to my wife and daughter as a joke, and they replied ‘too cute!’ I filled out an application, and we adopted it.�

Though the dog, a 20month-old terrier mix, was originally named Malick, Caicedo wanted to change it, and with his family, began to choose a new name. “We went back and forth, and then I said, ‘I know, I’ll name him Pit – for Ricky,’� he said.

With Pit alongside him, he completed the 5K in 34:30. “Not a bad time,� he said. “It’s always a great event.�

Watson said in an interview. “I’m guessing the Fanfare and the Montsalvatge will be much less familiar – it’s easy to trot out the same works that audiences like hearing, but I wanted to bring in some variety. It shows the kind of conductor I would be.�

She also chose the Higdon piece to highlight females.

Growing up just outside of Sydney, Australia, both Watson and her brother, Matthew, played violin from a very young age. “My mother played a little piano, but she always wanted to play the violin and wasn’t able,� she said. “So she would play us all these records, like Tchaikovsky.�

Matthew now plays for the BBC orchestra. “I came into conducting by accident,� she said. “I was teaching in Sydney, and more often than not, I found myself in front of groups of students.�
