n Dec. 31, 2020, James L. Seward of Milford – everyone’s “Gentleman Jim” – retired from the New York State Senate, where he had served Otsego County since Jan. 1, 1986. Because of COVID-19, few of his constituents had the chance to say: Farewell – and thank you. When offered the opportunity, many of us – his fellow legislators, community leaders, top corporate executives and businesspeople, and citizens to whom he reached out and helped in time of need – have now done so in tributes that appear in this Special Edition – from The Editor

When a group of people got together to rescue the old school building in the Village of Cherry Valley, there were many helping hands. State Senator Jim

He helped us get the post office located there and get the senior meal site, old school café, municipal offices and the prior day care center established.

It’s an easy job when you have a positive message and a winning subject like Senator Seward. He passed legislation to help millions, and just as importantly, he took time to compassionately help individuals who had nowhere else to turn.

Senator Seward is a man of the people and I know that will never change.

DAVID BLISS Chairman Otsego County Board I don’t recall exactly when or where I first met Jim Seward, but it was soon after he was first elected to the state Senate. Before long, I was elected to the Middlefield Town Board and then town supervisor, and Jim was always available for advice and to advocate for the needs of our town and his district.

Jim was able deliver with regularity, for our town, for the county, for the schools, and for all the citizens of his district.

His service to our communities was a lifelong passion and he greeted all with a big smile and a genuine desire to help. He departs the same way, and I wish both him and Cindy all the best in his retirement.

He deserves it!

He has been, for many years, a stalwart friend and advocate for our shelter, and was instrumental in the awarding of a $500,000 grant from the state, which provided a financial cornerstone for our new and beautiful stateof-the-art facility rising on Route 28 on the outskirts

of Cooperstown. Without Jim’s initial and tireless support, our new shelter might never have come to be.

In Troubled Times, Let’s Try ‘The Seward Way’ I n reflecting on Jim Seward’s tenure as our state senator, one vignette always comes to mind.

It was the fall of 2006, and Cherry Valley’s Pam Noonan, on a Sunday afternoon at her home on Montgomery Street, was hosting opponents of Reunion Power’s 24-turbine wind farm proposed for East Hill.

Senator Seward had been invited and, prior to his arrival, attendees expressed some vexation that the senator, with his interest in jobs and tax-base enhancement, would not support the opposition.

The senator arrived and, as he always does, listened intently to his constituents’ concerns, not exactly Sphinx-like, but without letting on too much about what he was hearing and thinking.

The outcome, a few weeks later, was Seward’s reaffirmation of support for the state’s “Home Rule” doctrine – whatever powers are NOT given to Albany in the state Constitution devolve to localities.

Influenced by that or not, the Town of Cherry Valley adopted strict guidelines governing windmills, and Reunion went away.

But the Home Rule concept moved to center stage: A few years later to the state Court of Appeals, which ruled the Town of Middlefield, using its zoning powers, could block Cooperstown Holstein’s fracking plans.

What observers learned at Pam Noonan’s that afternoon was this: Seward’s prime interest wasn’t in ideology or partisanship – it was in representing his constituents.

The central reason for this was, again, not partisanship or ideology, but because of Seward’s main focus: To serve the people of his 10-county Central New York state Senate District but, foremost, to serve its centerpiece: Otsego County, where he was born, raised, educated and built his political career.

Another word that comes to mind is “nurturing.” Jim Seward sought to nurture his constituents, to protect them, to enhance their opportunities for a better life, to solve their problems on the macro and micro level.

2016. When it recurred in the fall of 2019, he – weakened by one disease – was stomach-punched last March by deadly COVID-19 and almost lost his life. Then, the people he would nurture for 34 years nurtured him in return.

At the time, the outpouring of support and love on social media and www.AllOTSEGO.com was specific and impressive. People spoke about what he’d done for them, and they praised him, offered support to him and his family – wife Cindy, son Ryan and daughter Lauren, and granddaughters Nora and Vivian – and prayed (effectively, you might argue) for his recovery.

• Eileen Lishansky’s tribute is a favorite. Approaching Seward with a sticky issue, he picked up the phone and started setting it right. “From that day on, whenever my husband or I would meet him in the community he addressed us by name,” she wrote.

It’s that personal touch, which grew out of who he is. Several tribute writers note, he likes people. Or that he’s not an angry man, and that doesn’t have to win every fight: He’s willing to talk

Senator Seward – the “gentleman from Milford” – has always been a bright, articulate and humble individual who cares deeply about the constituents and communities that he represented. He not only was a mentor to me in the Senate, but someone who I respected professionally and admired personally. His insight and sense of humor will be missed in Albany, as well as the graceful and dignified courage he dem-

One of the people who knew him best is former state Sen. Hugh Farley, a Republican from the Capital District, now retired to Port Richey, Fla. They sat side by side in the Senate chamber for decades, and Farley saw Seward in action. (Only John Marchi of Staten Island, who served 50 years, was in the Senate longer than Seward, Farley said.)

“He got along with people,” said the retired senator in an interview from his Florida home.

“It makes for a much better situation if you don’t get personal in your partisanship. He was always a gentleman. I never heard him confront or insult anybody. I was very proud of him for that.”

• As we bid Senator James L. Seward farewell from his current job – thankfully, he plans to stay active in a manner still to be revealed – the dozens of complimentary tributes that appear in this edition give us pause for rumination.

We’re in a period of intense partisanship, where we believe we’re right and the other guy is wrong – or worse, immoral. In reflecting on Jim Seward’s 36 years serving all of us, we realize it doesn’t have to be that way.

We can disagree without insulting. We can believe strongly, without demonizing the other. We can have a diverse country – diverse lifestyles, diverse culture, diverse thinking – by being who we are and accepting that others may be different. No sweat.

It can be done. Jim Seward’s life to date proves it.

Senator Seward built a legacy of advancing significant legislation to address health care costs and coverage while advocating for critical health care access to meet the needs of his constituents.

Healthcare Network programs and initiatives that are so vital to the region we serve, including the school-based health program, initiatives to address the opioid epidemic, the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine & Health’s programs to reduce injuries and fatalities among the state’s farming community and so much more.

Of course we did - here was one of “our own” seeking to do something positive at a time when the campuses were rife with activists for all kinds of causes (from Earth Day to end the Vietnam War). Jim wanted to engage the system and actually accomplish things for our region.

He may not have won that first bid for office, but with some apprenticing in Albany, he eventually took over our state Senate seat, and never looked back. And his accomplishments are legion, too numerous for a 100-word article.

Funny at the editorial meeting after he met with us, several staff (including the young Republicans of that day) voiced concern that Jim was quiet and shy.

However, two of us said no, he is focused, knows what he’s about and what he

wants to do.

Jim and Cindy, wish you both the best for a long and fruitful retirement.

The point is, one day I went to Senator Seward’s office here in Oneonta in a state of total desperation. I had no appointment. As a mother of three young children I needed serious help.

Senator Seward led me into his office, calmed me down and asked how he could help. He did not judge. He believed a wrong needed to be made right.

Within that hour he made a critical phone call that changed our family situation from horrific to manageable.

From that day on, whenever my husband or I would meet him in the community he addressed us by name. He truly worked for the people of this community.

My boss then was Peter Dokuchitz, state assembly for four years in the late 1970s; Jim Seward had been on his staff.

Peter asked me to give Jim a call, I did, and within days Senator Seward visited me.

We talked about the state of the company and within two weeks he came back with a group from Albany, NYSERDA and SNSE for a tour.

With the senator in the middle monitoring the discussion, the visitors advised me what road to take and how they could assist me.

He is a true friend and a champion for our area. May God bless you, Senator!

In the late 1980s and early 90s I was Chairman and founder of the Schoharie County Young Republicans. One of my fondest memories from those days was working with Senator Jim Seward on his re-election.

On Election Day, we barnstormed across Schoharie County, going door to door to shore up any last-minute support.

Working and learning from Senator Seward lit a fire in me and reaffirmed my true desire to serve the people of New York State.

Fast-forward to April 24, 2018. I was in a special Election for State Assembly.

My friend and mentor, Senator Jim Seward, came to Greene County to speak at a get-out-the-vote rally.

He addressed the roaring crowd, telling them how important it was that they get out the vote for me – the kid who 30 years before drove around with the senator, convincing voters to do exactly the same for him.

eginning this week, some members of the general public are now eligible to schedule an anti-COVID vaccine

appointment.

As of Monday, Jan. 11, the state gave the goahead to expand vaccine appointments to Phase 1b populations – seniors, first responders, corrections officers, teachers

and other school staff; in-person college instructors, childcare workers, public facing grocery store workers, transit workers and individuals living and working in homeless shelters.

Also Monday, people 65 and older were folded into Phase 1b; previously, it has been 75 and older.

Phase 1a was focused on healthcare workers. The 1b situation is “fluid,” Kelly Rudd, Bassett Healthcare Network director of pharmaceutical services, said of the many moving parts of the operation.

Shelters “have to be inviting,” he added, to compete with national pet store chains and breeders.

The new shelter with also feature double-room kennels; state-of-theart plumbing to accommodate high volumes of pet hair; two indooroutdoor cat room “catios,” a wet table for some minor dental work and more to help achieve this goal.

“This facility is state-of-the-art in terms of electrical, plumbing, capacity, efficiency and sanitation,” he continued, as he inspected doubledrains that will allow pet hair to be easily washed away.

– cleaning hair out of drains can cost $1,000 a month, said Haynes, who accompanied Learned on the tour.

State-of-the-art shelters, as the new $5 million complex will be, depend heavily not just on plumbing, but on air conditioners, which keep the animals from smelling each other.

That, and the layout – the way cats and dogs are separated, for instance – will keep the animals separate, calm and quiet.

Preventing animals smelling, hearing and seeing other animals thereby improving temperaments, overall safety and the possibility of adoption, said Learned, who has two adopted shelter cats.

The new shelter also has slightly better capacity to handle “worst-case” scenarios – hoarding situations, for instance – but the goal is shorter stays across the board.

Earhart sojourn and what became the Famulare family’s farm in the 1940’s is about to be memorialized.

The Fly Creek Historical Society announced its application for a “Legends & Lore” marker has been approved by the Pomeroy Foundation, and will be erected later this year.

That’s the historical society’s sixth Legends & Lore marker. Sherlee Rathbone, society president, said that means the Town of Otsego, where Fly Creek is located, has more than any community in the state.

The others memorialize David Shipman, inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper’s Natty Bumppo,

as well as Cattown Road, Honey Joe Road, Bed Bug Hill and Panther Mountain.

As Atwell related it, Hecox considered Earhart, who would disappear in 1937 trying to fly over the Pacific, the “first love of (his) life.”

“When my grandfather heard (Earhart) went missing, he said he felt it in his heart that she was gone from this world,” said Baker.

by May. So far, $4.1 million has been raised.

Administration is also being adjusted. “A lot of people had no idea of our needs. We have been researching supplies and working to understand the new facility and equipment,” Haynes said.

“The staff has been gearing up and couldn’t be more excited,” she continued, adding that her daughters are thrilled to see the new space in-person - “the shelter is part of them.”

t’s a day that will live in infamy, Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob attacked the U.S. Capitol, vandalized and ransacked the venerable building, and was driven out by National Guard units and Capitol Police with some loss of life.

Prior to Jan. 6, 2021, few Americans could visualize that ever happening. The natural response here in Otsego County, as throughout our United States, is horror, sadness and fear for the future.

What now?

To Defuse Violence, Salka Must Accept Election Fair To the Editor: On Friday, Jan. 8, Assemblyman John Salka engaged in a frank, one-on-one, 15-minute conversation with me about the election results and the insurrection at the Capitol. I sincerely appreciate him devoting so much time to talking with me, as I’m just one of over 100,000 people in his district.

But I was left appalled by his attachment to two selfserving, destructive, false narratives.

It was clear from our conversation that he has no actual evidence that Joe Biden’s electoral victory was fraudulent. He brought up one item (the affidavits of people who claim they saw

irregularities). I explained that many of those were from people who had not attended observer training and therefore didn’t understand that what they witnessed was routine procedure.

Mr. Salka did not try to rebut. He did not come back with other evidence. He simply moved to the claim that we couldn’t know what information might eventually come to light.

In other words, he knows of no actual evidence.

The exchange showed the shockingly careless way in which Mr. Salka undermines the legitimacy of our entire system of government.

Antidote To Chaos? Read Obama’s ‘Promised Land’ To the Editor: The insurrection directed by Donald Trump against the U.S. Capitol has prompted me to begin Barack Obama’s recent memoir, “The Promised Land.”

I look forward to reading of a time when America had a decent, intelligent and honorable president worthy of the respect and admiration of its citizens.

With COVID-19 restrictions behind us by mid-year, and the rancor of the 2020 election ebbing, the whole question of what constitutes a sensible, secure election process should be revisited in we can only hope, an atmosphere of relative calm.

To the Editor: The violence in D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021, which lead to the deaths of five people, have clarified the one question that needs to be asked of our country, state and regional representatives: Are you for the democratic process or are you for insurrection?

There is no longer any nuance, thanks to the actions of a group of pro-President Trump protesters who chose to break into the U.S. Capitol, loot it, call for the deaths of both the sitting Vice President Mike Pence and the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and kill Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick.

Their attempt to overthrow a free and fair election — the election managers of all 50 states (who are a mix of Democrats and Republicans) have found no evidence of fraud — has made

As of this writing, the future is unclear.

Shortterm, however, let’s look forward with hope for a tranquil inauguration of the new president, and let’s hope a President Biden, who spent his career in the giveand-get atmosphere of the U.S. Senate, will move forward, as he has pledged, toward less disunity and more consensus.

I have no evidence of fraud in his election, and so I acknowledge not merely that he is my representative, but that he legitimately is my representative. That’s how democracy works.

Similarly, Mr. Salka doesn’t like Mr. Biden’s politics and wishes he weren’t our president-elect. But he was elected by a clear majority of voters in enough states to get a sizeable majority in the Electoral College.

Mr. Salka acknowledges that Mr. Biden will be inaugurated on Jan. 20, but despite having no evidence of fraud, Mr. Salka refuses to acknowledge that Mr. Biden is legitimately going to be the country’s next president.

That’s not how democracy works.

Susan Holmes Borden Landon Private Rites Jan. 30 In Oneonta

ONEONTA – Susan Holmes Borden Landon peacefully departed this life on Nov. 23, 2020, at her home in Oneonta. The love of many and her own great spiritual strength will guide the rest of her journey.

Sue was born as the second daughter to Leon and June Borden, in a large family of seven children. Growing up close, making music together and spending summers in the Adirondacks left an impression, and Sue went from being the boss of the Borden kids to the core of a rich family life.

Sue spent many years surrounded by family, creating a hub for family activities, all with her signature brand of well-organized but whimsical fun.

Sue’s most fulfilling work was always as a teacher or

guide in some form. After earning a Master’s degree in Communication Education from SUNY Oneonta in 1974, she married Tom, her loving and supportive partner for life. Sue worked as a teacher of speech and Susan B. communiLandon cations at Montgomery College, and her talents for communication continued to serve her as her career shifted to the spiritual realm.

Sue had long been active as a spiritual savant, and in 2009, she became an ordained minister with the Institute for Spiritual Develop-

ment in Washington D.C. Her role there continued to grow, and in 2012-14 she served as director and pastor. After moving to Oneonta, she and sister Diana founded the Institute for Spiritual Development, Oneonta.

Sue created magic in the lives of those around her. She had many tricks up her sleeve for this purpose, tailored by her intuition to fit the needs of those on the receiving end. She saw the opportunity for greatness in us, and she made sure we got there.

Sue will be missed by husband, Tom; siblings Ellan (Lenny) Brussee, Cathie Porter-Borden, Lee (Roberta) Borden, Robert (Salli Jo) Borden, Diana (Ben) Friedell, John (Sharon) Borden, and Susan Borden; as well as extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Sue’s memory go to the Institute for Spiritual Development. Donations can be made at www.isdoneonta.org, or checks made be payable to the Institute for Spiritual

ONEONTA – Ronald S. Songdale, 86, passed away Jan. 5, 2021, at Chestnut Park Nursing Home in Oneonta.

He was born March 19, 1934, in Oneonta, the son of Peter and Violet (Sterling) Songdale.

Ron was a Air Force veteran, serving in 1952-1956.

He was a member of the Oneonta Vets Club and the

Moose Lodge.

Ron was employed as a manager at Williams Furniture Store, Oneonta, for 30 years. He also worked in security and as a greeter at the Oneonta Walmart for 16 years. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey S. Songdale and fiancée, Penny Carey, of Morris; his sister, Sylvia Quartier, of Florida; a niece, Kim; and his dear friend, Marie Laterra

of Oneonta.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Peter Songdale.

Sedition Is Part Of American History – But Some Learn Lessons To the Editor: Sometimes sedition is a good thing. Sometimes, not so much.

My family are experts in sedition and revolution. We may in fact be some of the most revolting people in America.

When sedition wins, history, which is written by the winners, proclaims you a hero. When sedition fails, history proclaims you a traitor.

Our first seditious loss came in North Carolina, where, as colonials, we joined The Regulators, in a localized tax revolt against Great Britain in 1771. We lost that one, but that seditious revolt

was a precursor to the Revolution in 1776, where we were on the winning side.

Then came the Texas Revolution, where one (1) of my son-in-law’s ancestors died defending The Alamo. So chalk that up as a seditious win for the extended family.

Then came the Civil War, where my Northrup ancestors fought for the Confederacy and were either killed or died in prison. Only two survived to move to Brazil, where slavery was still legal, or Texas, ergo me.

So as of the end of the Civil

War, the family was batting 500 on sedition, pretty poor considering some old Yankee families have batted 1000, but still a record even Pete Rose would envy.

One of my Senators in Texas, Ted Cruz, a Cuban-CanadianAmerican, attempted to contest the results of the Electoral College by challenging it under the Electoral Count Act of 1887.

Cruz knew that there was no dispute in the Electoral College to adjudicate. Cruz was engaging in a political stunt - egged on

by Trump and the conspiracy theorists. Pence would not support

the charade so Cruz’s motion was dead on arrival.

After Trump’s supporters broke into the Capital and murdered a law enforcement officer, Cruz continued with his seditious stunt after Congress reconvened, joined by a handful of showboats in the Senate and the majority of the Republicans in the House.

This after 50 officers had been injured, 15 had gone to hospital and one was murdered protecting the rule of law from what President George Bush called a “banana republican attempted coup” by Trump’s mob.

Conspiracy Fantasies Must Come To An End To the Editor: Millions of Americans watched in horror as partisan domestic terrorists stormed the U.S. Capitol last week to prevent the lawful election of Joe Biden. I join in the anger and disgust at the destruction of public property and the desecration of the hallowed citadel of democracy. I despair at the unnecessary loss of life, including brave Capitol police officers.

But I also angrily denounce the ongoing incitement by the President and allies in the Republican Party as well as their tepid or non-existent denunciations of the appalling insurrection.

Although I am a proud Democrat, I gain no satisfaction in acknowledging the obvious sickness and dysfunction in the Republican Party.

We will not survive as a republic unless both major parties are able to eject the violent extremists in their midst and reject damaging conspiracy theories.

The latest conspiracy propagated

by Republican elected officials who know better is the monstrous and obvious lie that the 2020 election was somehow stolen. This madness must end. The Republican election conspiracy is the latest in a growing

list of fantasies that have damaged our republic. In recent years we’ve seen Obama birthers, Sandy Hook “truthers,” climate change deniers, COVID-19 minimizers, antivaxxers, and Q-Anon lunacy. Add this potent stew of know-nothingism to Republicans flirting with violent extremists like the neo-Nazis of Charlottesville, the white supremacist “Proud Boys”, and armed right-wing militias.

We have a toxic combination that has exploded and will continue to lead to violence until a critical mass of mature adults in the party speaks the truth.

Locally too, we see the poison of this right-wing radicalism and the flaccid Republican official response.

One of my county board colleagues has for months been positioned as the mouthpiece for a “Second Amendment Sanctuary” (2AS) movement. This movement has been rejected by our county district attorney and Sheriff, the highest law enforcement officials.

Behind closed doors, my Republican colleagues will tell you they agree with the legal advice of the county attorney and understand the movement is illegal and unconstitu-

tional nonsense. But they fail to stand up and join Democratic colleagues and speak truth to their radical base.

The fantasy is allowed to continue, as this election fantasy was.

I am not anti-Republican. I was registered as one at some points in my life. They have had great moments and great people in their history, including Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, George H.W. Bush, and McCain. But the party needs to be saved immediately.

Democrats and independents cannot do it for them. Course corrections have happened before.

In the 1950s, the party finally came to its senses and rejected McCarthy’s witch hunt. In 1974, party elders finally approached Nixon to tell him it was over and he had to go. I know there are enough decent people left in the Republican Party. Please, Republican friends – specifically, elected Republicans, stand up and do the right thing. If you fail to do so, insurrection and domestic terrorism will happen again and the future of our democratic republic is in doubt.

Election Professionals Safeguard The Rights Of The Voting Public To the Editor: With all the hype and misinformation about election security, I cannot remain silent.

I would be remiss if I did not try to provide some facts.

I was the Democratic elections commissioner in Delaware County from 2001 to 2008. I was and am proud of the work elections officials do including the inspectors at the polls, the county commissioners, deputies, clerks, state commissioners, attorneys and staff at all levels and the secretaries of state throughout the nation.

We regularly attended conventions and continuing education seminars, interacting with officials from all counties and the state. These are dedicated honorable individuals who do their jobs with utmost integrity.

In 2002, the Help America Vote Act was passed and all states were required to comply with federal guidelines. The federal government paid a substantial amount of the cost, but some of the burden

fell on the counties. Among many requirements for polling sites, training, accessibility for disabled voters and several-too numerous to mention here; we were required to purchase new machines which have a real paper trail and actual ballots which can be hand counted in the event of dispute or results with a very thin margin.

Reports we see and hear on Election Day never reflect official results. A lot of work goes into preparing for elections and recanvassing and certifying results after the election.

Typically, it takes a few weeks to complete the certification process.

Procedures for mail-in ballots are also stringent and secure.

I urge anyone with doubt to become familiar with NY state Election Law and the Help America Vote Act of 2002. Of course, each state has elections laws to protect the rights of voters and the integrity of the vote.
