A native of Oneonta, Corinne Smith has served on Hofbauers the GOHS Board of Trustees for seven years, the last four years as president. Smith has been on the fund development and programs committees, along with the executive and nominating committees.

Deb Bruce has provided valuable services to GOHS for almost fifteen years.

Bruce has served on the Board as both an officer and a trustee, and for many years on the Collections Committee. For the past several years she has been in the critical position of GOHS’ database coordinator.

The award is named in memory of Eduard Hofbauer, who served on the

GOHS Board of Trustees.

Wayne Wright will be honored with the Albert E. Morris Award. A native Oneontan, he promoted and conserved Otsego County history during his 36 years at the New York State Historical Association.

He is a past GOHS trustee and currently serves as GOHS librarian. In 2018 he received the Herbert H. Lehman Award for Distinguished Service from the New York Academy of History. The award is named after the city of Oneonta’s first mayor.

After refreshments and the presentation of the awards, there will be a short business meeting, including the election of trustees and officers.

An information session on GOHS’ Spring 2020 fundraiser trip to Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, will precede the meeting at 6 p.m.

Seward, Survivor Plan Rally On Parole Reform

RALLY/From A1 Working with state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, Jennifer has planned a Justice For Gillian rally at 3 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 28, in Muller Plaza.

“It’s important for us to do something to highlight his parole hearing,” said Seward. “We want to provide information to people so they can contact the parole board to protest Dart’s release.”

In 1991, Dart, then 29, was sentenced to 25 years to life for second-degree murder after he was found guilty of stabbing Gillian to death with a “Rambo-style survival knife” – as described in the court transcript – on the second floor of the Oneonta Municipal Parking Garage on Sept. 12, 1989.

Dart will once again face the parole board on Monday, Nov. 4.

“Normally his parole is every two years,” said Jennifer. “But this time, it was only 19 months. I was furious, and I told myself, if I have to be a

one-woman show, walking up and down Main Street protesting his release, I will.”

“It goes to my heart that Jennifer and her family have to go through this every time,” said Seward. “I’ve got a bill that would expand the time between parole hearings from two to five years for violent offenders.

Families should not have to tell their devastating stories so frequently, and there’s always the chance the parole board will release him.”

As the anniversary of Gillian’s death drew near, Seward invited Kirkpatrick to his office, where they put together plans for the Justice for Gillian rally.

“I was so humbled,” she said. “He called me down and he said, ‘We can go to the city and get a permit, we can make this happen’.”

“I remember Gillian as a vivacious, smiling young woman,” said Seward.

“It hit our community very hard, and it is an affront to her memory to let Dart

see the light of day.”

At the rally, Seward will have sample letters and the address people can use to write to the parole board, as well as instructions for how to send a letter online. Letters should be submitted no later than Friday, Oct. 25.

“It’s a waste of taxpayer money to have them go before the parole board every two years,” she said.

There will also be speakers, and Jennifer has invited the police officers involved in Gillian’s case, as well as families affected by violent crime to share their stories.

But more than just an information session, Jennifer wants to continue to celebrate her sister’s life 30 years after her passing.

“I’m bringing photos and having them blown up into posters so people can carry them,” she said. “And I’ve asked all her friends to speak. But I told them that if it’s depressing, Gillian will be rolling her eyes. I want memories and funny stories.”

“And when I moved back to my family’s farm in Schoharie County, I saw how lush it was, how much water we have…while our farms are going bankrupt.”

At the same time, national climate experts believe California and the Midwest, the regions that today produce the large majority of America’s fruits, vegetables and grains, “are in trouble.”

“With the increases in temperature and wildfires, there will be negative crop yields. The U.S. population will increase by 110 million people in the next 30 years,” said Schreiner. “And the U.S. can’t sustain those levels.”

For New York State, though, “climate models project better agricultural conditions,” especially because “water will continue to be abundant and is the most vital ingredient.” The state is both close to and contains a core of large populations.

But to become America’s “new foodshed,” New York will have to reverse farming’s decline and become a vibrant, large-scale industry.

Schreiner gave “a seven-step path” for achieving that goal: 1) Farm aggregation, which means farms banding together to share markets and profits. Schreiner said her friend Ken Jaffe’s Slope Farms in Meredith will sell his neighbors’ produce and give them a fair price.

2) Increase arable land producers. “The average age of farmers is 59, and young people interested in farming, are drowning in student debt,” Schreiner said. “New farmers need student loan debt forgiveness.”

3) Do more research on

market forces for scaling up production.

4) Use Holland as a model for massive indoor farming, since New York State’s growing season is short.

5) Close gaps in the food supply chain, such as ensuring enough affordable trucking to get produce to markets. Use “big data” to drive strategic planning and investment.

6) Use public and private investment in New York State agricultural policy.

7) Prepare for climate adaptation to keep our food resilient. Examples are good stormwater management and prevention of soil erosion.

The four other speakers ranged from economic development to relationship development.

Choking back tears, Gertrude Matshe-Kanicki, a Zimbabwean living in New Zealand, said, “Africans were told a lie, that we were poor, and we believed it.

The only missing piece in Africa is education.”

An entrepreneur and business coach, Cait Scudder, said three roadblocks prevent people from tapping an inner genius: “People fear failure, success, and disappointing others.

In creating success, you have to be bad at things and work through them so you get better. You have to keep going.”

Abby Metcalf, who has spent 30 years helping “thousands of people” with their relationships, said if people take sides, they are making their relationships into competitions. “You have to give 100 percent of yourself,” she said.

Matt Episcopo, a police officer who received the Medal of Honor, coached the audience in building selfconfidence through three phrases.

5 Years Of Downtown Upgrades, And More To Come

egun inauspiciously in March 2014 with the felling of 37 trees on Main Street, a remarkable series of successes has followed in the reinvention of downtown Cooperstown for 21st century tourism.

The environmentally sensitive rain gardens, new sidewalks, streetlights, replacement of 19th century water mains and sewerage – even a new flag pole, embroiled in controversy as it now is – have followed in quick succession.

• But it’s not over, as observed in the past few days, as the Upstate Companies, which is growing into a Mount Upton-based behemoth, began working on Artist’s rending courtesy the Village of Cooperstown the latest projects: • One, the reinvention of pocket Work may begin this fall on the new entrance to Cooperstown’s Doubleday Field, which Pioneer Park, at Main and Pioneer, will include sidewalks, new walls and a decorative arch. Stop Dunkin’/Baskin Incursion Into Village To the Editor: Cooperstown residents should stand up against the Baskin Robbins/Dunkin Donuts franchise proposed for the corner of Walnut Street and Route 28.

Our town has consistently resisted the invasion of huge corporate franchises for decades, and we should oppose this incursion into our small village as well.

So far, we have kept McDonald’s and Pizza Hut at bay, by keeping them several miles outside of town.

Anyone who drives around the town knows what a nightmare it is to get from Walnut Street to Route 28

during the Dreams Park season, when there is an unending line of traffic coming south on Route 28.

Putting a junk food franchise on that corner is not only going to make the traffic even more of a nightmare, but it is also going to divert tourists before they reach Main Street, where they might patronize some of our local businesses like Schneider’s Bakery, Danny’s Market, The Inside Scoop, Doubleday Café, Stagecoach, etc.

Where Does Money Come From?

To the Editor: Senator Seward’s lament over taxes and fees passed in the recent legislative session (“A Little Here, A Little There. Suddenly, It’s Many Millions,” Sept. 5-6, 2019), provided a source of bemusement to this reader.

I kept remembering the multiple times over the years that Senator Seward has been part of a photo-op presentation in the media where he was shown handing a New York State check (often around election season) to a local govern-

ment or private organization to support a certain program or need.

Where does Senator Seward get those checks?

The answer is obvious – from the coffers of the New York State treasury, funded by those very same taxes and fees he rails about.

I had hoped that we only had to put up with this type of hypocrisy at the federal level; apparently, it has seeped into our state politics as well.

‘How Did America Stray So Far From Its Ideals?’

That candid world watches still today.

Since Donald Trump’s election, I have traveled all the continents except Antarctica, meeting countless PAULA persons who had DiPERNA just one question for me, “How could America stray so far from its ideals?”

Implicit in the question and what touched me so deeply was the extent to which America, our democratic values and quest for a more perfect union, had put us on a pedestal worldwide.

And, the extent to which the Trump Presidency has shaken the fragile house that is the American system of checks and balances, and normalized reckless Presidential behavior that other nations, much more despotic, now may think acceptable.

’ve been driven out of the house to the peaceful shade of the front porch by television news. The programs are crammed with vitriolic volleys between this faction and that, one candidate and another.

Pushing the mute button wouldn’t quell the stridence. It would still be there in the images – puffed up pols and preachers and pundits, each mouthing their one and only truth.

There’s one old bozo who nearly makes me gag. On his way to dotage, he’s still devious and malicious, and still wields outrageous power over the Senate. His heavy-jawed face and

glassy eyes, floating on my TV screen, brings to mind a big Atlantic mullet, smacking lips over a small fry it’s just swallowed.

And so I have pushed not “mute” but “off” and have JIM fled to the porch.

ATWELL Out here, a cooling drink in hand, I’m thinking about humankind’s primal sin. I don’t mean Original Sin; I’ll leave that nut for

others to crack. I mean humans’ original sociological sin, whence all other such have been spawned.

I mean tribalism. Early in our species’ history, this trait embedded itself in our developing brain, probably parking right next to the fight-or-flight impulse. And it’s with us still today.

100 YEARS AGO

An Assemblage of “Fat Men” – A convention of fat men has recently been held in Norwalk, Connecticut at Gregory’s Point Hotel. One hundred and forty of the fattest men of New England and the adjoining states assembled. The names and weights of the various individuals are recorded. The weights ranged from two hundred to three hundred and fifty-eight pounds. The 358pounder was John A.P. Fisk of New York who was elected president of the society for the ensuing year. James A. Lincoln of Springfield, Massachusetts, weighing 329 pounds was elected vice-president. The aggregate weight of the six heaviest was 1,922 pounds giving an average of 320 and one-third pounds each. The aggregate weight of the whole 140 men was 31,385 pounds, being an average of 224 pounds each. They feasted on shell fish, scale fish, fish without scales and a great variety of vegetables. They devoured thirty bushels of oysters, 47 bushels of clams, 359 pounds of bluefish and eight barrels of sweet potatoes. Due to the intense heat the foot races were cancelled.

Celestial Photography – Celestial objects can be photographed that will never be seen by the keenest eyes, aided by the most powerful telescope that can be made. One reason of this is that the photographic plate is sensitive to a far greater range of vibrations than the eye. Not only is it acted upon, to a slight extent, by the visual rays, but by those as rapid as 40,000,000,000, a second.

Another reason is that, while the human retina can only retain an impression for about one-seventh of a second, the feeblest light that falls upon the sensitive plate is not lost, but is stored up. The countless millions of waves of light striking persistently upon one point of the plate must, in course of time, produce an image of the star. In this way, apparently blank parts of the heavens have been shown to be crowded with stars.

A recently published book about Yankee slugger Joe DiMaggio includes an article written by SUCO history professor William Simons. In the book, “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio” Simons describes how DiMaggio’s place in American history extends well beyond baseball. Titled “Joe DiMaggio and the American Ideal” follows DiMaggio from his start as a baseball rookie in 1936 through his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, to his success as an advertising pitchman.

alk about getting things backwards and exposing your political bias at the same time, while totally ignoring the facts – and you’ve identified Oneonta’s mayor, as reflected in a column he writes elsewhere.

Meizhu Lui, Executive Director of United for a Fair Economy will present “The Color of Wealth” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Center for Multi-cultural Experiences in Lee Hall at the State University College at Oneonta.

Lui’s group is a national nonprofit organization that helps build social movements for greater equality, according to officials. In her presentation, Lui will explore why the distribution of wealth in the United States is so uneven and whether public policy, even when well-intentioned, reinforces existing inequalities, and whether race and ethnicity continue to play a pivotal role in defining the haves and have-nots in society.

nd you thought America was “conceived in liberty”?

That is what Abraham Lincoln suggested. Well I’m here to tellya that is bunk.

This country was conceived in wholesale medical cruelty. And medical malfeasance. So there!

Doctors of the 1700s treated illnesses by blood-letting. Got a pain?

Slash a vein. Dysentery? Try an artery.

Migraines? Let us drill holes in your skull. To allow evil spirits to escape.

Your baby was born blind or retarded?

Toss him in a river.

That is the evil that birthed this nation. Our Founding Doctors committed the unforgivable. Early Americans accepted and practiced their nostrums.

This nation is stained with their evil from its conception.

Does this sound stupid to you?

• Well, many prominent folks suggest the equivalent these days. They stand solidly behind the 1619 Project.

The New York Times promotes this as its most worthy project. Presidential candidate Kamala Harris calls it a masterpiece.

The project is named for the arrival

of the first 20 African slaves in the New World. It claims that from that sordid point onward America was illegitimate.

Because its parents were sinful slave traders and owners.

This new reason to hate America is coming to a school curriculum near you! (It already has, in some form.)

Or so the 1619 TOM Project folks MORGAN dream. It certainly will come to forums which influence policy-making in Washington.

In other words, please practice hanging your head in shame over slavery. There is plenty more selfflagellation on the menu for us. Your penance is to spit upon tributes paid to Washington, Jefferson and assorted Founding Fathers. They were a pack of racist hypocrites. Everything they promoted and achieved was tainted with their sinful acceptance of slavery.

Americans did not invent slavery.

Hardly. From ancient Greece onward it was as normal as rain. All over the world people enslaved and bought and sold people. If we could time-travel to the 1700s, people would tell us we are nuts to say slavery was sinful. Lisbon, for instance, was 10 percent slaves in the 16th century.

By the way, only 5 percent of the slaves shipped across the Atlantic came to the U.S. Millions more landed in Brazil, Cuba and other countries and territories.

In America we had many freed black slaves. Guess how they harvested their cotton. They owned black slaves! That is how people thought in those times.

Slavery was a normal condition. Just like leeches for scurvy.

The 1619 Project crowd despises a country because of its history with slaves? Then let us add dozens of countries to its hate list. And remember, America was late to the game.

Field’s third-base line. The mayor isn’t sure how much will be done by next year’s

100th anniversary of the baseball landmark, but there should be enough to be impressive during ceremonies planned by the Friends of Doubleday.

Fowler Way, which leads to Doubleday from Chestnut Street, next to the Cooperstown Chamber, is much used, but narrow, bumpy and lacking sidewalks, all of which could and should be addressed.

She is interested in upgrading Hoffman Lane, across from the Hall of Fame, to lead more of the quarter-million fans that visit the Hall each year to Lakefront Park and James Fenimore Cooper’s Glimmerglass. Locals are

often surprised to learn that many visitors are unaware the lake is even there.

Then, attention could turn to Railroad Ave., which is becoming a center of local life and commerce, with Mike Manno’s 21 Railroad office building, and Attorney Michelle Kennedy’s office building next door, Cooperstown Distillery, the Railroad Inn, the renovated Spurbeck’s, Butch Welch’s recently redone apartment house, and the Susquehanna & Western Railroad headquarters.

With the empty “Where It All Began” warehouse and other space for apartments, Railroad Ave. is a promising next center of population growth.

Will it ever end? Listening to the mayor, you have to conclude: Never, and it shouldn’t.

Or consider nations. The history of every one is bloody with strife, for everyone has spent resources and lives trying to vaunt its essential superiority or expand its territory.

Think of their colonial adventurism and pious belief in “manifest destiny” that justifies slaughter of all who block their way.

And never mind religions!

I wonder if dear Jesus wrings his hands over the destructive conflicts that smolder among – and even inside – faith communities that draw their name from the Prince of Peace.

My education in tribalism

started early. For grades one through three, I attended tiny Holiday School, literally just beyond the fence of our back yard.

And there, after pledging allegiance to the best of all nations, we tots would lustily pipe, “Oh, Holiday, we think you’re grand, the finest school in all the land!”

And later, after high school, I joined a Catholic religious order founded in the 17th century to educate the poor, whose education then was non-existent. For 16 years I wore the uniform (black habit, white collar) of the order and bore the name that was mine

as a monk: Brother Denis Andrew.

“Hey, Andy!” Sixty years later, if someone behind me calls that out, I’ll turn right around! So are the abiding bonds of tribalism.

Some, like this one, are admittedly beautiful.

Others, like mindless racial tribalism, are fiercely destructive.

The evidence for this is tragically all around us, and fomented, God help us, from the highest level of our blessed nation’s government.

County Reps Consider Imposing E-Waste Fee E-WASTE/From A1 A second variable is decreasing support from New York State.

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) had offered a grant that helped municipalities cover some of E-waste’s costs, but it is not offering the grant this year for unknown reasons.

That led to Rep. Keith McCarty, who chairs the Solid Waste and Environmental Concerns committee (SWEC) to propose a $10 per unit for electronics such as computers, TVs, and monitors, and $5 per unit for “smaller electronics.”

While SWEC voted unanimously for McCarty’s proposal in their Aug. 20 meeting, it has not been submitted to the board for a vote yet.

“We still have to look at the issue some more to see what happens,” McCarty said.

15, Bennett retired as Ommegang’s creative director, a position he held for 15 years. “I’ll miss the people, the business and the free beer,” he said.

When he joined, his first goals were to expand the sales force and diversify the beer line. “We wanted to make different, interesting kinds of beers, and also short runs of more esoteric ones,” he said. “We were riding the wave of the craft industry. We weren’t the point of the spear, but we were certainly on the sharp edge.”

Launching the Witte beer – a lighter wheat beer with orange and coriander – was “hugely important” to bringing in new customers who might have been otherwise scared off by Belgian beers. “I loved being engaged with people, traveling and telling them about our beers,” he said. “It was a lot of fun.”

He also revived the “Belgium Comes To Cooperstown” festival, which was held every summer until this year.

“Everyone’s doing a beer festival now,” he said. “We are looking at how we can do it differently.”

He was instrumental in solidifying the partnership between HBO and Ommegang to produce their “Game of Thrones” beers, starting in 2013 with the “Iron Throne” ale, which quickly sold out. “Now that the show is over, we might be reviving some of them this fall,” he said. “Maybe in a gift pack.”

But for Bennett, Ommegang wasn’t just about making great beer.

Otsego 2000 President Nicole Dillingham “came to see me because she was hoping someone would get involved in the fight against hydrofracking,” he said. “80-90 percent of Bennett our water comes from beneath our own brewery. They wanted to dig wells between here and Cooperstown, so this affects us. It would put us out of business.”

He, with support from Simon Thorpe, Ommegang’s then-president, reached out to other business and rallied them behind the anti-fracking cause, including helping the Town of Middlefield write the moratorium law that eventually was confirmed by the state Court of Appeals.

“At one point I was talking to brewers in

Chicago about this, and one of them told me I scared the pants off him! But something needed to be done.”

The fight was successful.

“I can count on my fingers the number of angry phone calls I got,” he said. “I can’t even begin to count the number of positive calls.”

But fracking wasn’t the only issue Bennett got involved in. “In the South, many states had 6 percent laws, meaning that only one of our beers could be sold there,” said Bennett.

“Wholesalers and retailers knew there was a market, and we did a lot of work with organizations like Pop the Cap in North Carolina.”

As a result, many of the laws were repealed, allowing them to expand their customer base. “We are very popular in the midAtlantic states,” he said.

He has hired Mike Falco to take over as creative director. “My goal was to find someone to do my job better,” he said. “And Mike was it.”

At the ceremony, a memorial bench with a plaque will be dedicated in Faust’s honor, and a banner with his photo will hang on the field for the week. “We’ll all get patches and T-shirts, and I’m going to give a framed photo to his team so they can hang it in the dugout.”

In addition, Faust’s friends and family raised more than $10,000 for Friends of Doubleday.

“Our original goal was $5,000,” said Murfin. “But we surpassed that right away. Some people gave twice, just to help. That shows how much we all admired him.”

“It’s a huge first donation,” said Katz. “And it’s a perfect marriage of people who love the field and what we can do to make things happen.”

Murfin will also give away 50 of Faust’s bats – each with a sticker of the memorial patch – to his teammates at the end of the ceremony.

Hanzolo Musicians Hope ‘Upstate Funk’ Will Take Them Places

Hanzolo’s earliest incarnations came out of Cooperstown High School, where Loewenguth, Summers and James Matson (trombone) formed their first band, Cheese of the Misty Ceremony.

“We put the word ‘cheese’ into a random band name generator,” said Carl. “That was the first time we played a live show.”

Meanwhile, Joey Katz (saxophone) Nate Olmstead (Drums) and Carl’s brother Jack (bass), formed a jazz outfit called Goats with Narcolepsy.

They all graduated and went to college, but after graduation, back in Cooperstown, they formed Hanzolo in 2015. “We got back together and decided to take it seriously,” he said.

“Hanzolo is really just a melding of Goats and Cheese folks,” said Katz.

Their first major live show was the 2016 Cooptoberfest, and along the way, they added

a second drummer, Sebastian Green, a Milford native. Though they initially started with covers, they soon began writing their own music.

“We all have similar tastes in music,” said Carl. “Jack and I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, so that’s ingrained in us. It’s jazz and soul

with a little weirdness.”

Similar tastes, even, in childhood pastimes. “We do a cover of the music for the character Pablo from the video game ‘Backyard Baseball’,” said Katz. “He’s the best player!”

The name comes from a combination of the ‘Star Wars’ character Han Solo and ‘Kill Bill’ character Hattori Hanzo. “For legal reason, we say it’s from ‘Kill Bill’,” joked Katz.

They bill themselves as “Upstate funk” or “Alt-funk.” “Even our covers fall into that mold,” said Jack. “Sebastian wanted us to play Justin Timberlake’s ‘My Love’ and he laid down this entirely different beat.”

According to Katz, Loewenguth writes “99.9 percent” of the songs, but he and Olmstead both contribute. “They’re all a little different, but they work in the same mold,” he said.

They released their debut album, “Table Butter” earlier this year. “A friend of ours came up with the title,” said Matson. “He

described our sound as smooth enough to spread, but hard enough to hold together.”

The album is available on streaming platforms, including Spotify and iTunes, and in June, they shot a video for “Not Easy.”

“That song has a really romantic premise, to just keep dancing,” said Loewenguth. “We shot it at Innerskate 88, and the Hill City Rollers were our extras! The whole shoot was so fun.”

Katz lives in Boston and Green lives in Brooklyn, so they join the band when they can. “It’s just amazing playing with these guys, so I try to make it up as much as possible,” he said.

They’ll perform at Brewery Ommegang’s Firepit Friday on Sept. 20, and at the Schenectady County Funk N’ Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Gateway Park.

And as winter settles in, they’re take a break from touring to work on their sophomore album.

“We’ve got 15 new songs,” said Loewenguth.

IN MEMORIAM Gary T. Fisher, 60, Otego; Landscaper, Auto Enthusiast OTEGO – Gary Thomas Fisher, 60, who was known by friends as “Motörhead” for his love of cars, died Wednesday, Sept. with his loving family by his side.

Gary could be seen around town in his Chevy Blazer with lawn mower in tow, off to his next client to do landscaping for them. He was very meticulous about his work. Gary was known for his handyman skills and

the saying, “There isn’t anything Gary can’t do or fix.”

He loved sitting around with friends playing cards, foosball and listening to classic rock. He enjoyed classic cars. He was known as a “Motörhead” from working on cars in the garage with his boys, tinkering with stereos and working with glass.

He leaves behind his loving sons, Nicholas and

Justin Fisher of Otego; grandchildren, McKenna and Nicholai and their beloved dog, Turbo; his significant other, Michelle Zimmerman; his sisters, Tammy (Brian) Gardepe of Myrtle Beach, Brenda MacDonald of Walton; brothers, Brian Fisher of Oneonta, Timothy (Lori) Fisher of Davenport; Phillip Young, who he considered a son; his cousin, Frank (Suzanne) Fisher, Oneonta, whom he thought of as a brother; several nieces, nephews and cousins; a great friend, Kim (John) Hendricks; many friends and extended family.

Interment was in the Walton Cemetery on Friday, Sept. 13, with a celebration of life on Saturday, Sept. 14.

MORRIS – Kathleen “Kate” M. Hansen, 88, who raised siblings, then children and a grandchild, passed away Sept. 6, 2019.

She was born on Sept 19, 1930, in Brooklyn, the daughter of John Joseph and Cecelia (Farrell) Kate Bankich. In Hansen 1949, Kate married Charles Hansen at St. Gregory the Great Church in Brooklyn.

While starting a family, Kate and Charlie raised her younger siblings. During this time, they moved to Upstate New York in 1959.

Kate leaves behind a sister, Rosie Hoffman; her brotherin-law, Brent, and also her six children, Barbara, Bill (Vic), Rich (Nina), Kathy (Dave), Susie (Rhett) and Ron (Lisa). Also surviving are her 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, In addition to her husband, Kate was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Pat, Jr, Bobby, Andy, and Jimmy, her sisters, Helen, Cely, Joanie, and Mary, a son, Chuckie, and a son-in-law, Bruce.

Kate’s Celebration of Life will be held at her residence at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Peggy Jean Banta, 63, Unadilla; Dies After 8-Year Fight With Cancer UNADILLA – Peggy Jean Banta, beloved sister and niece, passed away on Sept. 11, 2019, at home on her 63rd birthday after an eight-year battle with cancer.

Peggy was born on Sept.

11, 1956, at The Hospital, Sidney, to Jean Anderson Banta and George D. Banta III. Peggy grew up on the family farm in Unadilla Center, the third of four children.

She attended Unadilla and Unatego schools, graduating in 1974. After graduation, Peggy remained at home to help her mother with the bookkeeping for the farm.

With the decline of her mother’s health, Peggy became the primary bookkeeper as well as caregiver for her mother, and later, her father.

In 2011, Peggy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Through eight years of surgeries, chemotherapies and other medical procedures, Peggy continued to care for her dad and uncle at home. Banta Brothers dairy farm ceased operation

at the end of 2012, and Peggy cared for her dad until he passed in 2015.

She considPeggy Jean ered Banta family most important in her life, and was both loving and generous.

Peggy enjoyed going to antique shops with her mother and sister, collecting old postcards, vintage Halloween items, and anything with cats. She was also a dedicated fan of the rock band the WHO. Peggy is survived by two brothers, Clifford (Veleda) Banta and Randy (Victoria) Banta, both of Unadilla; one sister, Connie Marcus of Utica, and her special uncle, Richard Banta, at home. Also surviving are her niece, Barbara (Don) Pierce; nephews, James (Diana) Banta, Gabriel Marcus and Thomas Banta; aunt Jane

Winchester, several cousins, and good friends Joanne and Don Rickard.

Peggy was predeceased by her parents, her cousin, Judy Rose, who with her husband, Fred, supported Peggy and Connie during Peggy’s initial surgery, and her very special cat, Texas.

The family would like to thank Drs. Kathleen Laveaux and Danielle Knight; FNP Patty Jacob; nurses Brenda, Teresa, Regina, Becky, and Sara; also Judy, Gayle, Brenda and all of the many support staff at Bassett Cancer Institute in Oneonta for their excellent care and compassion. Another thank you to Hospice staff who supported us during Peggy’s final days.

A private graveside service will be held at the family’s convenience.

Donations in Peggy’s memory may be made to Catskill Area Hospice or the Unadilla Food Pantry.
