Cigarette Lit Fire That Killed Dog, OFD Says ONEONTA

A

lit cigarette discarded in a trash can filled with newspapers caused the fire at 89 Ford Ave. last Tuesday, Aug. 14. According to Oneonta Fire Chief Pat Pidgeon, the fire started on the front porch and moved through the house quickly. The fire killed the resident’s dog, who was hiding on the second floor. Oneonta Veterinary Hospital donated the cremation arrangements for the animal. SAFETY MEASURE: After debating safety concerns, Common Council Tuesday, Aug. 21, voted to restrict parking to one side of Oak Street, the one block street between Elm and Ford. Details at

GARDEN GRANT: City of Oneonta received a $25,000 Community Growers Grant Award from the state Department of Agriculture & Markets to improve handicapped access to its community garden on Wilcox Avenue and water access, add fencing, a shed and a composting bin, and install new picnic tables.

n XNG truck travelling on Route 205 in the Town of Oneonta caught fire on

Monday, July 9, but the public is only now finding out about it after a citizen filed a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request. “It’s just unbelievable to me to think that we’re not being told everything with these accidents,” said JoAnn Gardner, who lives on Route 205 in
