Twin, 3, Drowns In Susquehanna

e was a little boy who loved life, and had a contagious laugh that brought joy to all,” reads the obituary for Andrew James Durkin, 3.

Do We Divert XNG Trucks Now – Or After First Fatality?

O

n the surface, the argument makes sense, (sort of).

Boston-based Xpress Natural Gas’ trucks, carrying fuel from fracking fields in Northeastern Pennsylvania across Otsego County to the Iroquois Pipeline near Little Falls, are legal carriers and should be allow to use New York State roads just like any other legal carrier.

After all, what’s next? Should we then ban oil tankers? Suburban Propane delivery trucks?

Dump trucks, where pebbles might from time to time slip out from under the tarps? Loud motorcycles? Model Ts and other antiques that don’t operate at current fuel-efficiency standards?

Oh where, oh where will it stop?

Editor’s Note: This is an excerpt from a recent e-mail from Albert Colone, co-founder of GO-EDC, the Greater Oneonta Economic Development Counci, to Oneonta’s community leaders.

O-EDC is calling upon Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig, with the support of the Oneonta City Council, perhaps even with tacit interest of the Town of Oneonta, to move action to set-up a city Jobs and Career Opportunities Task Force to craft and lead a community-based campaign to rebuild and secure a positive economic and cultural future for Oneonta and the surrounding area.

The proposed task force should involve all of our state and federal representatives. Given that Oneonta is the most important regional public municipality within a 40-mile radius, the task force should include professional planners and economic development agencies from Otsego and Delaware counties.

Like representation from both Mohawk Valley and Southern Tier East Regional planning agencies, both fed-

eral and state components are also essential.

And mostimportantly, this jobs initiative needs to be built around compelling private business leaders who believe in Oneonta, understand its importance to our multi-county region and want to see it grow in population, who have a solid vision built upon sound fundamental business practices.

Let’s try and complement our existing economic drivers of higher education, healthcare and baseball to foster growth in diverse private sector ventures in bio-technology which would favorably impact on healthcare, agribusiness, energy, sustaining clean air and water, along with other jobs’ creating sectors.

It’s simply about new 21st Century jobs for Oneonta.

Mr. Mayor, let’s get this task-force going, let’s make the leadership moves necessary at City Hall to start bringing interested parties to join the team.

If something like this doesn’t happen, not only Oneonta, but the entire area around Oneonta will continue to slowly wilt on the vine.

County Executive” forum last December at Springbrook, was quoted as follows in a July 10 New York Times article, “A Congressional Candidate Used to Be a Rapper. Will It Matter?”

In an appearance at Cooperstown’s Templeton Hall Wednesday, July 17, Congressional candidate Antonio Delgado said he will stick to the issues and not be drawn into a debate over a rap CD he recorded 12 years ago.

e have learned that a campus leader at SUNY New Paltz made comments about rap music, race, and community in a prominent news article today covering a congressional election. The most troubling comment within the article is the following: “people like us, people in rural New York, we are not people who respond to this part of American culture (rap).” The quotes raise the specter of racism and marginalize members of our community, both of which are antithetical to our institutional values of inclusivity and respect.

We spoke with the administrator

who offered these quotes. He regrets these comments and their impact on the institution and our community and recognizes that language matters. We are disappointed that such language would come from a campus leader and ambassador of the College and reaffirm that the quotes do not reflect our institutional values of inclusivity and respect. Our expectation of any member of this community is that they be mindful of the impact of their speech on others and understand that the consequences of that speech may have unintended and long-lasting negative effects.

ear Colleagues and Co-workers: I have worked at SUNY New Paltz for fifty years in several capacities, and have a deep attachment to the school and the diverse community we have built here. I am therefore very sorry for any unintended distress caused by my remarks in yesterday’s New York Times interview, published today in the print edition.

These remarks have been condemned as racist. I had no racist intent but understand the impact of those remarks, and regret having made them.

I sought to make two points in this interview. The first was that race is never irrelevant to American politics, and that this is especially the case when an African American candidate is running against a white candidate in a largely white district. The second was that the Republican use of his background as a rap artist was an attempt to open a cultural gap between Mr. Delgado and the majority of the district’s population.

• There’s a certain logic to the argument. But, honestly, XNG trucks have caused four “incidents” – three down-and-out accidents, no doubt about it (Google “XNG” at www.allotsego.com) – since they began crossing the county en masse 18 months ago.

Have there been three oil-tanker crashes? Three Suburban Propane truck crashes? Sure, pebbles have slipped from under tarps, but the results are an occasional cracked windshield; should we ban them completely for that?

Face it, the XNG trucks are different. For one, there are just that many more of them: 80 a day, back and forth, for 160 individual trips. In 500 days, that’s 80,000 trips. The magnitude alone assures there will continue to be

We Wonder About The Trees...

ach Thursday when The Freeman’s Journal arrives in our mail box, we are never quite certain what new interesting tidbits of news we might encounter. Of course, we usually know what we will find in our column, although that is not always the case as pictures often seem to appear of which we had no prior knowledge.

Of course, the news and opinions in the rest of the paper are always something we look forward to reading.

And this past week was certainly no exception.

However, we were puzzled when we read in last edition of a State of New York grant to “...prepare an urban for-

est management plan for street and park trees” in Cooperstown.

We have long thought we understood the concept of a forest. In fact, we grew up with one at our CATHERINE family cottage on LAKE Lake Michigan ELLSWORTH which we hastened to note is in a very rural Michigan setting. But our childhood forest did not seem to include any street or park trees.

• Thus, we felt the need to do a bit of Wikipedia research to determine just what an urban forest might be. In doing so we learned: “An urban forest is a forest or a collection of trees that grow within a city, town or a suburb.”

Further research on Wikipedia told us: “A city is a large human settlement,” while towns are “...a human settlement...generally larger than villages but smaller than cities.” And, “A suburb is a mixed-use or residential area, existing either as part of a city or urban area or as a separate residential community within commuting distance Please See COLUMN, A5

Visitors to Chicago and the Columbian Exposition – Messrs. S.C. Miller and T.A. Rowe returned Saturday from Chicago. Miss Florence Matteson is home from the Columbian Exposition. Professor Edwin F. Bacon leaves next week for the World’s Fair. Mr. Milton Gurney returned Saturday night from an extended sojourn at the White City.

Among World’s Fair visitors who left Oneonta Tuesday were Mr. J.P. Kenyon of Morris and Mrs. Amy Crawford and daughter Elsie of this village. The two latter went by way of Albany and the Central. Mrs. E. Pope Westcott left this week for Michigan where she will visit her daughter, visiting the great Fair before her return. Engineers Brimmer, Crippen, Robinson and Fellows left Tuesday for Chicago. Rev. E.F. Temple leaves soon for the World’s Fair, the Chapin Memorial Church being closed during August.

A party consisting of Messrs, N.J. Ford, M.L. Ford, E.J. Gurney, L.C. Gurney, E.E. Ford, and P.K. Strong of Laurens leave on Monday for a two weeks sojourn in Chicago.

Governor Hugh Carey signed numerous legislative bills into law on Friday. One of the new bills cracks down on financial trickery by figure and exercise salons, clinics, tennis clubs and the like. All told, Carey has signed 704 bills and vetoed 44 so far this year. A few more are expected to result from an extra legislative session. Other bills signed

by Carey include a bill sharply increasing the penalties for promoting or patronizing child prostitutes. Another bill enacts a new system for coordinating the state’s disaster relief activities. Another new law allows wife-beaters to be tried in criminal courts instead of the Family Court. Community groups will be eligible to use vacant state-owned land for gardening. Another bill encourages the planting of trees in urban areas. Another bill signed by Carey extends property tax exemptions to Grange Halls and other buildings used by agricultural societies. Automobile rental car companies should find it easier to prosecute people who fail to return the cars on time. Carey vetoed a bill that would have required police chiefs to pass a civil-service test. The state will now regulate the disposal of potentially hazardous industrial waste.

New Public Library Books – Listing books recently added to the Oneonta Public Library collection: “Army and Navy Uniforms and Insignia: How to know Rank, Corps and Service in the Naval and Military Forces of the United States and Foreign countries.” This is a very complete book with illustrations and many plates in color. Henry Irving Dodge’s “Yellow Dog” which first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post. Other books of interest are “Practical Business English;” Bruce’s “Handicaps of Childhood;” Brawley’s “The Negro in Literature and Art in the United States;” “The Romance of Commerce;” by H.G. Selfridge, and “Tenting Tonight,” Mrs. Rinehart’s new book of western travel. Some new books in the Children’s Room are “The Mother West Wind Stories;” the delightful books of animal stories by Thorton W. Burgess; “Child Life in Other Lands” by Perdue; and Snell’s “Eskimo Robinson Crusoe.”

Frank Morrison, 79-year old national secretary of the American Federation of Labor, said today he expected to live to see a 21-hour work week in effect – and, with higher pay for workers,” he said. In that year, as an example, he said, printers worked 59.5 hours a week. The show, staged under the direction of Mrs. Gloria Hendricks, assistant county 4-H agent was judged by Mrs. Leroy Parshall, Cooperstown and Miss Laurain Lasher, Delhi. Commentators were Miss Shirley Hodgkins, assistant County Home Demonstration Agent, and Mrs. Hendricks. Oneonta girls receiving Blue Ribbons were: Betty Hughes, Martha Georgia, Marjorie and Mildred Harrison, and Patricia Reilly.

Protected by blanket immunity, Monica Lewinsky agreed Tuesday to provide “full and truthful testimony” to a grand jury investigating President Clinton. Plato Cacheris, one of Miss Lewinsky’s lawyers confirmed that his client would receive complete immunity in return for her testimony.

Legal sources say the former White House intern will say she had sexual relations with Clinton, contrary to his denials. Lewinsky is also ready to testify about conversations with the president and others that could help prosecutor Kenneth Starr build a case of obstruction of justice against Clinton and his confidants, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

For President Clinton this changes the legal picture completely as Lewinsky had previously denied a sexual relationship. In sworn testimony in the Paula Jones case in January, Clinton said under oath: “I have never had sexual relations with Monic Lewinsky. I’ve never had an affair with her.” Lewinsky deeds immunity from prosecution because she signed an affidavit saying she did not have sexual relations with Clinton. Giving a different account under oath for Starr would mean she had committed perjury, a felony, in one account or the other.

After six months of off-and-on negotiations, Lewinsky’s shift came when Starr signaled to her that his investigation was drawing to a close and it was time to cut a deal before it was too late.

If Not Towns, Can Citizens, Politicians Approach DOT? EDITORIAL/From A4 northbound rig came over a very slight rise on a very slight curve and toppled off the road. Just a 10th of a mile further on – maybe 150 yards; a football field and a half – was the hamlet itself: homes and people.

Looking at the scene, it would be hard for any sensible person to conclude: a little bit farther, that same rig under very similar circumstances could have had serious – even fatal – results.

No, we’re not being overdramatic.

Go see for yourself.

Equally troubling is a circumstance that’s becoming clear: In the three cases, the trailers being pulled by cabs slipped off the pavement for a moment, sank into too-soft shoulders and toppled. On many, many stretches of Route 205 and Route 28, the shoulders are the same and, given 16,000 trips every 100 days, it’s going to happen again and again.

It doesn’t have to be.

Dillingham’s been getting the runaround. She goes to the towns; they say it has to be handled at the state level by the Department of Transportation. She goes to the DOT, it says its hands are tied without a request for a “traffic study” from the towns along the route.

A traffic study might well determine the trucks are simply too heavy for the roads, and order them onto four-lanes – I-88 or I-81 to the New York State Thruway (I-90) and, hence, Little Falls. There’s a ready alternative.

But, according to Oneonta Town Supervisor Bob Wood, chairman of the county Association of Town Supervisors, his colleagues believe a truck being operated legally should be allowed on any legal roads. They tell him: What’s next? Are we going to ban Suburban Propane delivery trucks? And there we are.

What are some other options?

Maybe a petition by citizens would

convince the DOT to act. Maybe a request – firmly worded – from the county Board of Representatives, which next meets Wednesday, Aug. 1, plus vigorous follow-up, would do the trick. Certainly, our state delegation – Senator Seward and Assemblymen Magee, Miller, etc. – could dent DOT’s resolve to do nothing.

Right now, Otsego 2000 is drafting a resolution for town boards to consider passing. And Wood said Dillingham is welcome to talk at one of his association’s monthly meetings. He should invite her to do that soonest.

• OK, there have been four “incidents,” three of them crashes. We’ve been lucky it hasn’t happened in a populated hamlet. But it will.

Let’s not wait until an XNG rig plows into someone’s living room or rolls over someone’s mobile home, with perhaps fatal effect.

Bad things can happen, we can see.

Let’s act before they do.

I particularly regret the casual use of the phrase “people like us” to describe rural upstate New Yorkers. Academics should stick to what they know. I react negatively to racially charged, violence-inducing misogynistic lyrics I have heard, but knew virtually nothing about rap music as a form of affirmative artistic and cultural expression. I was therefore particularly

Rappers Telling Us Racism Is Fully Part Of Our Culture KUZMINSKI/From A5 and its unsettling, provocative language is an unpleasant reminder to the rest of us of a major failure of our society – something we still need to fix.

No matter how uncomfortable it makes us, we should respect not condemn hip hop for the challenge it poses.

The rappers are telling us that racism, far from being something we can ignore, has been built into our culture, and thereby into how we think.

Delgado is saying that we’re not color-blind, that we’re all racists on some level. This is meant not to condemn us, but to invite us to acknowledge a common problem, which is the first step to overcoming it – like an alcoholic admitting he or she’s an alcoholic.

Like an addict in denial,

Faso pretends to be colorblind. But he betrays his own prejudices by cynically stooping to play the race card against Delgado.

I’m not a racist, he insists, but Delgado must be because he has the audacity to remind us of the truth of our tragic history.

By insisting that Delgado’s lyrics are un-American, when they are in fact as American as apple pie, Faso only deepens the racial divide. To exploit racism for votes is despicable demagoguery.

Luckily, the voters will have a choice in November of either giving in to their racism, or beginning to transcend it.

Tiger Fans Await Reinforcements

Detroit’s Comerica Park hasn’t sent an Inductee to Cooperstown since Al Kaline in 1980, but that will change this weekend.

his Induction Weekend, it’s all about the blue and orange.

“By default, everyone in Michigan is a Tigers fan,” said Debbie Boston, a Detroit native now living in Cooperstown with her husband, Dane Boston, the Rector of Christ Church,

Cooperstown. “It’s a city pride thing.”

And with the induction of Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, fans are ready to show their hometown pride.

“For a long time, it was an embarrassing place to be from,” said Boston. “None of our teams ever did well, except for the Redwings hockey team.”

Of the estimated 50,000 fans expected in town for the weekend, Matt Hazzard, executive director of the Cooperstown Chamber of Commerce, expects that the Tigers will make up a large part of that contingent.

“They haven’t had a Hall of Famer since Al Kaline in 1980,” he said. “So to have two players in is a big deal.”

Growing up, downtown Detroit was a rough neighborhood, overrun with gangs and drugs. “The downtown was always empty and

derelict,” she said. “But the only time I remember being stuck in traffic was if there was a Tigers game.”

And as a teenager, Boston used to attend games regularly. “It was always fun to go,” she said.

The Tigers Stadium was torn down in 2009, and they now play at Comerica Park, part of Detroit’s efforts to strengthen the city’s image. “The new stadium and downtown is so beautiful,” she said. “And having Tigers inducted is a big part of that revitalization.”

A large turnout is also expected for San Diego Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman.

“He’s the second Padres player over the last decade,” said Hazzard. “But he’s the last in the foreseeable future.”

But with Detroit as a “drive city” – a fan can be in Cooperstown in eight hours – Hazzard expects a lot of fans will make the trip for the weekend. “Detroit is a great baseball city,” he said.

And, he believes, it won’t be the last time Cooperstown welcomes Tigers fans. “Miguel Cabrera is still playing, but he’s positioned to be at the top,” said Hazzard.

60 Years Later, ‘Darn Yankees’ Awakes Many Fans’ Memories

Legal nOtice NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING Otsego County received a 2004 Economic Development Grant from the New York State Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to assist Otsego County’s Small Businesses.

Otsego County’s Revolving Loan fund Program II was established per the Grant Agreement from the repayments of loans authorized by the Block Grant.

On March 29, 2018, the NYS Department of Housing and Community Renewal release a notice of policy change to the retention of CDBG program income by current and past recipients of the CDBG Program administered by New York State since the start of Program Year 2000.Under CDBG Program income rules at 24 CFR 570.489(e), the State can choose to allow recipients to retain and reuse the program income subject to all CDBG requirements, or to require it to be returned to the State and reallocated under the Stat’s Method of Distribution. The State will require all past and present local recipients of the State’s CDBG Program (since the yar 2000) to return any uncommitted program income in their possession on March 31, 2019 or received after that date.

Otsego County as a recipient of CDBG funds “Small Cities Program” is considered a “non-entitlement” county with a population of less than 200,000 and having received funding directly from the State.

The county has certified as of May 31, 2018 a total of $638,704.60 in program income and has identified the following county projects as eligible CDBG activities that demonstrate a National Objective and meet CDBG program requirements: $85,000 Community Center for on site training and laundry services associated with the open Public Facilities Project 868PF28-17 “Tiny Homes” for the construction of a community center for training and laundry services. $50,000 Feasibility Study for the Proposed Town of Maryland distribution site $50,000 Housing Rehabilitation “Farm Restore” program to assist with house repairs $200,000 MicroEnterprise Program with a focus on Agricultural businesses $100,000 Coditum Education Program $100,000 Transfer of funds to the City of Oneonta for the ARC ReUse program Expansion Each funded activity must meet one of the three National Objec-

Susan (Ford) House Plantz, 84; Early City Leaders’ Descendant ONEONTA – Susan (Ford) House Plantz, descendant of Oneonta’s earliest leading citizens, passed away on July 22, 2018, at O’Connor Hospital in Delhi.

She was 84.

Susan was born in Oneonta on Sept. 12, 1933, the daughter of Alice (Ford) House and Dr. Leroy S. House. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Merton L. Ford who, in business with his father, Newton Ford, owned and operated Oneonta’s first drugstore.

In addition, Dr. Ford helped organize the electric power plant in Oneonta and was an original investor in the Computer Tabulating Co., which later became IBM. Susan was also a direct descendant of Eliakim Reed Ford who was influential in bringing the railroad to Oneonta in 1865. Prior to that he was the first president of the village.

Susan was the last descendant of this family to carry the name Ford, having been named after her grandmother, Susan Morris Ford.

Louise Storey, 70; Worked At Bassett DAVENPORT CENTER – Louise Storey, 70, who worked as Bassett Healthcare, and lately at Hanford Mills Museum, passed away on July 19, 2018.

Louise was born in 1948 and raised in Oneonta. She was in the Class of 1967 at Oneonta High School.

In the late ’70s early ’80s, Louise worked at Brandofky’s Florist and Mohican Flowers, then spent the majority of her years at Bassett Hospital, first in medical records, then purchasing.

She then worked at Hanford Mills Museum, East Meredith.

Louise is survived by her husband, Keith; daughter, Kim White and son-in-law, Jonathan; son, Chad Lyons and daughter-in-law, Annette, and daughter, Emily Storey, and several grandchildren.

Louise’s memorial service will be 2 p.m., Sunday, July 29, at her home in Davenport Center, where a tree will be planted in her honor and memory. Arrangements are by the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, Oneonta.

Twin Brother, 3, Accidentally Drowns In Susquehanna River

Parents Issy and Jamie Durkin of Gilboa were spending a fun weekend at their seasonal home just north of Goodyear Lake with their daughter Isabella and twin sons Andrew and Aiden.

As they were packing up to go

home, they noticed that Andrew had gone missing. The family searched the property for the boy before placing a 911 call at 2:54 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Deputies from the Otsego County Sheriff’s office, and emergency crews from Milford responded, discovering the small body in 7 feet of water about 17 feet from the shore.

After resuscitation efforts at scene, Andrew was transported to Fox hospital in Oneonta, where he was

pronounced dead.

According to state police, Andrew was dressed in the same outfit as his identical twin, which may have factored into the parents losing track of the toddler before his death.

No foul play is suspected, police said, and the death has been ruled an accidental fresh water drowning.

A post by Andrew’s mother on Facebook announcing Andrew’s death received over 1,400 likes and just over 1,000 comments from peo-

ple sending prayers to the family.

“I don’t have the words to help ease your pain, but I do know that everyday it will consume you a little less. There will come a time where you will feel like you can breathe again, even if just for a moment. I am so sorry for your loss,” reads one comment on the post left by Shannon Butler of Oneonta.

or me, there is only one true way to serve a hot dog and that is from a good old-fashioned hot dog vendor. And Hot Dog Jim’s, on Southside in Oneonta, is the real deal.

Jim himself is there six days a week, serving classic Sabrett all-beef hot dogs, cooked either double-boiled or grilled FINE DINING, and availFUN DINING able with the classic Staff Picks ketchup and mustard garnishes or piled high with onions and chili (with or without beans).

Bagged chips are clipped to the side of the truck – I can’t have a hot dog without Fritos, personally – and make sure to grab a cold can of soda before you take a seat at one of the umbrella tables. If you want to try a HOT Dog, then I recommend you try their Cajun Dog! The paprika in it gives the Cajun dog a rich, deep pink color, making it easy to spot in the cooker. But behind that pretty exterior is a surprising punch of heat that will linger in the mouth long after the dog is gone.

hen it comes to hot dogs, I often find myself needing to eat at least two to fill me up. That isn’t the case with the jumbo dog at Doubleday Café in Cooperstown. The all-beef dog is a quarter pound of savory bliss, and certainly enough to take care of that mid-day hunger.

And costing only $6.75 before taxes, it’s almost fiscally irresponsible to not get the jumbo dog.

While everyone has their own preferences when it comes to toppings, I’m personally more of a hot dog traditionalist, meaning I don’t put anything on my dog minus the usual ketchup and mustard.

But for anyone slightly more liberal with his or her hot dog toppings, you can order the jumbo dog with sauerkraut and relish as well. And of course, no hot dog is complete without a side of fries and a soda to make up the perfect lunch.

I got the cheese dog, then put onions and this really good spicy red sauce on it.

And if you remember getting a really good hot dog at a baseball game when you were younger, this is it.

They have plenty of seating downstairs, but if you are lucky enough to get an outside table, go for it! Eating a nice hotdog on a summer day right by the flagpole on Main Street… doesn’t get much better!

Salomon, 75 and a Cleveland, Ohio, native, creates collages featuring the greats of the game and current stars of the Major Leagues. He’s been doing this for 50 years, since he was given a set of large, uncut baseball cards

by Daniel Stagg, grandson of legendary football coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.

After a stint away from home, he returned to Cleveland and rediscovered his childhood in his vintage baseball card collection. “I found out that my mother had saved my 1949 baseball card collection,” he said. “I said subconsciously, ‘I want to make my own baseball cards.’”

Living in Brooklyn in 1963-1978, Salomon became very interested in the Brooklyn Dodgers. “Obviously I never got to see them play, but I started making collages for all of the players of the 1955 Brooklyn

He’s been making collages ever since, building them against a background of mixed colors, textures and unpredictable brush strokes.

“All I need is a good photograph of a player, and then I just paint a wild abstract painting as the background,” he said.

He continued: “First, I lay a color on the stretched canvas, let’s say yellow. I let the yellow paint dry, then I

go over it again with black.

Before the black dries, I scratch out parts with a fork so that the yellow shows through underneath. After that’s dry, I just glue on the picture of the player.”

When Salomon got the opportunity to meet some of the 1955 Dodgers at a convention in New Jersey in 1999, he knew that he had to show them his work.

• “The Doughboy,â€? installed in 1919 at the end of Pine Boulevard, across Lake Street from The Otesaga, appears to have been designed especially for the village. Indiana sculptor E.M. Among other ideas, one plan is to create a pedestrian-friendly walkway between Main Street and the ballpark, with a small plaza in the middle, wherein would be “The Sandlot Kid,” according to Village Trustee Cindy Falk.

There are a number of public statues in Cooperstown – from “The Indian Hunter” in Lakefront Park and “The Leatherstocking Statue” in Lakewood Cemetery. Victor Salvatore, though, is the sculptor most associated with “America’s Most Perfect Village.”

He was born in Italy in 1885, brought to The States at age 2 and won his first major prize, a bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition, when he was just 19. He was noted for his sculptures of children, but found them challenging “because they change so. You have to do them so quickly,” recalled Victor Jr., himself a retired journalist, whose career included a stint on the Washington Post.

The father participated in the groundbreaking 1913 Armory Show, remembered as introducing modern art – Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism and the lake – to bewildered America. He sold nothing there, according to his son, but his next exhibit, in Chicago, sold out, and that appearance won him commissions in Portland, Ore., that kept him there for two years, according to his son.

Famed sculptor Victor Salvatore examines the Plasticine versions of “The Sandlot Kid” that was the basis for the “lost-wax” process that would create the bronze statue at the entrance to the Doubleday Field parking lot.

Back in New York, he married Ellen Ryerson, who survived the 1912 sinking of the Titanic. Her father, Arthur Ryerson, principal

in the Ryerson Steel Co. of Chicago, died in the historic tragedy. The family summered on Otsego Lake, developing what is now the Otsego Golf Course, among the oldest golf courses in the country.

Her mother Emily lived in Ringwood Manor, behind where Farm Credit East was built last year. She gave Horton House to one child, and to Ellen, Swanswick, where Victor Jr. spent his

boyhood summers and his father moved his studio in 1958 after the Bible House block was demolished. (“Famed New York Sculptor, 71, Refugee From Wrecking Crews,” read the Utica Observer-Dispatch Headline.)

His son remembers visiting his dad in his studio during creation of “The Sandlot Kid.” The sculptor invited in Jimmy Symington, the record-breaking prep-school baseball player of the day (at Groton), to get an idea of a young ballplayer’s stance.

(Symington’s mother, Cecilie, lived for years in that pink bungalow on Nelson Avenue.)

Symington thought he was the model for “The Sandlot Kid,” but the younger Salvatore remembers otherwise. It was actually a young, rather rough teen he remembers as “Tommy.”

Some years later, Tommy showed up at Salvatore’s studio, well-dressed, looking prosperous.

“My father always wore overalls,” said Victor Jr., and Tommy must have thought he was in straitened circumstances. “He tried to give him some money.”

He ended up giving his original Pee Wee Reese collage to Reese’s sons, who were acting as a security detail for the Hall of Famer. As Salomon packed up to head back to Cleveland a few days later, Reese stopped

in to thank him.
