e all know about Induction 2019, which begins at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Clark Sports Center.

The next year, the village trustees made a decision after the most angrily debated local issue in decades: In the face of a sharply divided electorate, they voted to extend paid parking to all downtown streets between Labor Day Weekend and Columbus Day Weekend.

Almost immediately, Village Hall’s financial picture brightened.

The first year, paid parking added $250,000 to the $5 million village budget, and that’s continued to grow in the years since to $400,000 in the fiscal year that ended May 31. Village taxes haven’t gone up in five years.

any years ago, when Earth was still cooling, I was a young professor teaching rhetoric. That study had been greatly advanced by Aristotle. He was not long dead then, so the topic was still fresh.

Aristotle said that rhetoric is “the art of effective, persuasive speech.”

The crassest form is used by the usedcar salesman who scuttles across the lot with wide eyes and lockjaw grin, as if his best friend had just shown up.

But simultaneously, the salesman is scanning you like a laser, looking for a personal link. And then he spots your lapel, and claps a hand to his heart. “A

Well, shame on me, picking on this poor guy! Probably the only Aristotle he knows is Ari who runs the corner

store. But if the original Aristotle had been around, I’ll bet he would have snorted and punched me in the shoulder.

But let me wrench myself back to my topic. Again, Aristotle defined rhetoric as the art of effective – that is, convincing – speech. (He also gives a great definition for “art”: the rational control of any natural human capacity. Good stuff! – but maybe for some other time.)

Jacob C. Dietz, of Anamosa, Iowa, is spending a few weeks here among the homes and haunts of his early life, and is greeted most cordially on all hands. In childhood, youth and early manhood, “Jake” had the way that always wins and keeps many friends. Now that he comes back to us broadened-out by the whole-souled progressive manhood of glorious Iowa, it does one good to grasp his warm hand and feel the throbbing of his liberal soul. He finds his native village doubled in size since he left, and much of the old farm covered with busy streets. We are glad that young Iowa gets so many Otsegoes and puts them into the front rank of its thinking, working conquering hosts.

The Local News – Sewer and water pipes are being laid on the Walnut Street extension, thus avoiding a necessity for expensive excavation after the grading is completed.

A new mineral spring has been found at Wilber Park, Oneonta. It is very pleasant and cool, and has an abundant flow and tastes very similar to Waukeshau water which was sold everywhere on the World’s Fair grounds for a cent a glass. Many take the health-giving waters to their homes.

The water is free to all.

Lady passengers traveling on trains 6 and 7 will hereafter during the summer months be presented with a handsome bouquet when the train reaches Oneonta. This graceful little custom was inaugurated Monday, when bouquets of sweet peas were given out. Tuesday and Wednesday sweet peas and pansies were used. Each day hereafter the flowers will be varied.

Five physicians and two druggists were held today in heavy bail for trial when they were arraigned before United States Commissioner Hitchcock – the first result of the crusade started by the federal authorities against alleged traffickers in habit-forming drugs. Bail was fixed at $7,500 for Dr. Jacob Kornblum, Dr. M.A. Levy, Dr. H. Stern, Dr. Jacob Katz, Dr. Edward E. Gardner and Aaron Goldberg, druggist. Dr. F. Phillips, the second druggist was held on $5,000 bail. According to one of the federal agents who

The Fourth Annual Oneonta Farmers’ Market in the city parking structure will open Saturday at 9:30 a.m. At least 15 businesses or individuals will sell produce, handcrafted items, and baked goods in the market, organizer Su Yates said. The market in the Water Street level of the parking structure will continue to 2 p.m. each week and will operate each Saturday until the end of October. In addition to the sales booths, there will be music, demonstrations, and such events as watermelon-eating contests on Saturdays. At least 15,000 people came to the market last year, she estimated.

The Cost Of A Free College Education

Y

ou might read the headline and ask, “How can something that is free have a cost?”

First of all, nothing is really free. That includes the free lunches at school, the free grants the City of Oneonta receives from time to time to pay consultants or deploy flower pots, and free college education.

A public school education is free to the students who attend grades one through 12 yet, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, New York spent an average of $22,366 per pupil at its public schools in 2016 – 90 percent above the MIKE national average.

ZAGATA Are those things really free? Governor Cuomo is running a $2 billion budget deficit this year alone and the federal government has accumulated a national debt of $82 trillion ($60 trillion of which is tied to unfunded pensions).

Why is the government spending that money? Much of it goes to fund entitlements – programs whereby people get free money. Someone has to pay for those expenditures if the government is going to have a balanced budget – revenue coming in must equal money being spent.

Where does that revenue or money the government must take into its coffers come from? It comes from the taxpayers – you and me.

• You see, those free things aren’t really free. Taxpayers – not always the ones receiving those free things – pay for them.

Cooperstown Creates Setting For What May Be Record-Setting Induction EDITORIAL/From A4 • In 2013-14, a $600,000 state Green Innovation Grant paid for “rain gardens” around newly planted trees. In part, the idea was to slow runoff into Otsego Lake and the Susquehanna River. The first brick sidewalks were also installed.

• About the same time, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $2.2 million for downtown enhancements, from repaving, to sidewalks, to redone and new lampposts (with LED lights), to street furniture, on Main but also on Pioneer.

• The final expenditure from that grant will come this fall: Narrowing the Main and Chestnut intersection, adding walk/don’t walk signs, and generally making it less scary to pedestrians.

(If you’ve tried to cross there, you know what we mean.)

• Local money, $1.2 million, was used for more routine projects, albeit important: the replacing of water lines and sewerage under Pioneer Street dating back to the 1880s.

• A $5.8 million renovation of historic Doubleday Field, the symbolic – if not actual – Birthplace of Baseball is now underway. Go and take a look.

• Throughout this period, nowretired Trustee Lou Allstadt led the charge on upgrading the historic Village Hall, including those beautiful new pillars on the front. Stop by there, too, and take a look, and stop in at the library and Cooperstown Art Association gallery while you’re at it.

No one has a ready tally of all this. $5 million. $10 million.

Maybe more. Whatever, a lot for a village of 1,769.

• There’s more still to come, particularly at Pioneer Park (Main and Pioneer), where initial work – a bike rack and water fountain – has already begun.

A stage is planned against the Tunnicliff Inn side wall for the popular “Music on Main” programs during the summer. Brick pavers will add handicapped accessibility. And landscaping – a London plane tree and birches – will be added, three lampposts and new furniture.

“We all recognized new sources of revenues were needed, and aggressive grant application, to take care of infrastructure that was just

going to deteriorate,” Tillapaugh said. She was fully involved in all of this as deputy mayor to Jeff Katz, who retired from office a year ago April 1, and now as mayor herself.

She also pointed out that merging village court into Otsego Town Court, and repositioning the municipal library as a schooldistrict library, paid for by a separate levy, further helped the village’s financial picture.

In all, Deputy Mayor Falk estimates $10-15 million has been spent to make this village of 1,769 people more welcoming to a halfmillion visitors a year.

• The free-wheeling nature of the 2008 Ripken-Gwynn weekend is no more. Everywhere you’ll see high-security measures: from

temporary iron fences to such additions as $4,000 trash cans that can be locked during the Legends of Baseball parade Saturday evening. You’ll also notice a much greater police presence.

Regrettably, that’s the nature of our post-9/11 world, intensified after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. It can’t be helped for now; maybe in a better world to come. We can at least be assured that state-of-the-art measures are in place to ensure the security of the at-least 84,001 of us this weekend.

Enjoy – the Induction of Mariano Rivera, Roy Halladay, Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Harold Baines and Lee Smith will likely be one for the record book. In beautified downtown Cooperstown this weekend, we may be participating in history.

SEWARD: No ‘Green Light’ Law As Loose At New York State’s SEWARD/From A4

While advocates claim that states freely grant licenses to illegal immigrants, that claim is patently false.

Twelve states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico offer driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. However, what is left unspoken in the “Green Light” argument is that eight states require illegal immigrants to provide their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles with a tax identification number,

tax returns, or proof that the applicant is a dependent of a taxpayer residing in the state.

For example, Utah only allows illegal immigrants to obtain licenses for a period of one year; the District of Columbia offers limited purpose licenses; and Connecticut requires that an illegal applicant file for citizenship.

The New York “Green Light” law does none of those things and creates

a disincentive to naturalization when coupled with other initiatives passed this year, like free college tuition for illegal immigrants. It also does nothing, as advocates claim, to ensure that someone here illegally will remain at the scene of a serious accident if it could involve a potential felony charge that could lead to deportation.

Perhaps the people of Oregon got it right on this topic. According to the National Conference of State

Legislatures, Oregon lawmakers passed legislation in 2013 allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

The measure proved to be so unpopular with the public that voters suspended the law 67 percent to 33 percent in a referendum the following year Recently, Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns filed a federal lawsuit challenging the law and he may not be alone. Several other county clerks around the state are considering joining Kearns’ suit

or filing separate actions. One of the main reasons the clerks are opposed to the state law is that it would force them to break federal law. I stand with the clerks and fully support their efforts.

It is time we reprioritize in Albany and focus on jobs, lowering taxes, repairing our infrastructure, and putting law-abiding citizens first.

We went to Lyon to be part of the Women’s World Cup effort and had seen the U.S. beat England and a tough Dutch team win over the taller and “blonder” Swedish squad.

Now we were ending our week by screaming for a goal by the U.S. I had thought a great birthday gift to my newly 13-year-old granddaughter from Alexandria, Va., would be the opportunity to see the Women’s World Cup in person.

Kira is following – or rather, ahead of – her father’s footsteps as she is part of the U.S. Olympic Development Program, the prelude to the U.S. Women’s team. Her father Scott Waller was a CCS soccer star.

So off to Lyon it was.

• “USA, USA”, England vs U.S. Our half of the stadium waving American flags.

First, we had spent a couple of hours at the “fan experience” at the entrance.

There really wasn’t much to do, as the organizers underestimated the American attendance and our propensity to “tailgate” before an event.

This underestimation was evident the whole week.

Restaurants were scrambling to deal with the onslaught of steak, hamburgers and other typical American orders which ran out in many places. Uber was overloaded, with wait times going to 30 minutes and in some cases, “no driver available.”

English was sometimes the dominant dialog in the squares, but fans

weren’t into breaking out in soccer songs in spontaneous fashion, as Dutch, Swedish and other supporters often did. We even had some beerholding orange supporters rocking our train car in song during one evening trip back.

Chants of “Pay Them” and “Equal Pay” also rocked the stadium once during the match, alluding to the pay inequity between the Men’s and Women’s soccer teams from the U.S. Many we talked to in Lyon expressed the feeling that the U.S. was the best environment for woman athletes and sport employment. One French lady vendor with her Master’s Degree in Sports Admin told me her only place for a job was in the U.S. and she planned to return to Texas as soon as her Visa was approved.

All of a sudden, Alex Morgan is taken down in the box. Calls and shouts alerting the officials to the foul, as if they weren’t watching a

championship match; shouts turning to chants and then sudden silence as we all realized the call was under “review.”

The referee trots out from under the cover at the center of the field, draws the box with her hands indicating review results and then signals for a US penalty kick. The entire stadium shakes and roars with the screams of fans as Megan Rapinoe walks calmly to the spot.

Bang, she kicks to the right and it’s 1-0, U.S. over the Dutch. Intense play and then a pass to midfielder Rose Lavelle as she works her way towards the goal, then left foots a bullet into the back of the net, past the outstretched hands of the Dutch goalie; it’s 2-0. Everyone knows the match is over.

ZAGATA: Under Free-Tuition Plans, You Pay Your Debt, Then Keep On Paying ZAGATA/From A5 Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax, etc.

• As of the June 2019 headcount, there are 392,072,188 people in the U.S. If you divide that number into the national debt of $82 trillion, the result is $209,145.16. That’s the debt burden on every US citizen as a result of our government spending more than it takes in.

That debt is “sold” to investors like China and Japan and you and I pay interest to them via income taxes every day they hold the Treasury notes.

What would happen right now if China, our arch competitor, decided to call its notes in and demand their value in cash? The portion of our taxes

that is being used to service this debt represents money that is not providing any benefit in the form of infrastructure improvement, better schools, etc. Providing free college education and health care will only add to that debt and more of our tax dollars will have to go to servicing that higher debt at the expense of better roads, schools, etc.

Sometimes the government decides to use money they promised us would be kept in a special account and invested so that it would grow, and then they break their collective word and spend it. That’s what happened with our Social Security money.

When that was done, the pot of money, our money, was no longer there and growing.

Instead, it is now treated as a debt and we are paying, not collecting but paying, interest on our money because our government “borrowed” it.

No wonder it’s going broke.

Let’s take another look at that free college education being promised by the Democratic candidates for President. The way it works now, you and your parents decide if you

want to spend the time and money it takes to get a college education. If you decide that it is, you apply to college and, if accepted, agree to pay for tuition, books, and room and board.

You may get some help from your family and you may work to help pay part of the costs.

It may be that you will need to borrow some of the money as a student loan that you pay back after you graduate and get a job. Once you’ve paid it back, you’re done paying for your

education.

How does this differ from the free college education being proposed? The initial differences are slight in that the books and room and board may not be free and thus you may still have to come up with some of the money. The biggest difference is that once you graduate and pay back whatever money you may have had to borrow for books and room and board, you’re not done paying.

You see, others who will

come after you are also getting a free education and it will be the tax dollars the government can extract from you for the rest of your life that will be paying for someone else’s education. Does that sound like a good deal to you now?

Socialism does have its costs.

Audience awareness will make you adjust your speech accordingly: You’ll fine-tune your vocabulary, your complexity of sentences, your degree of repetition and clarification.

• For example, if you’re talking to a 4-year-old, you may very well bend over or even (if your knees will take it) squat down to the child’s height.

And you will do a similar thing with your capacities as a speaker. You will lower your volume, soften your tone, and automatically simplify your vocabulary.

If you don’t, your booming warmth, whatever your intent, will only terrify the child, and perhaps make him scream, pee,

and scuttle away, leaving a trail of piddle on the parquet floor or, worse, on his mother’s prize, hand-tied Persian rug.

Now, set aside the kid and his sticky residue, and note that you make exactly the same kind of adjustments in speaking to adults. After a quick, even unconscious appraisal of their age, likely education and employment, and their potential interest in your subject, you shift gears and begin to sell – no, not your subject, but yourself.

• Why, because, best beloved, if you get them convinced that you’re bright, ethical, and on their side, you’ll be able to sell them anything, whether a product, a political platform or a sermon topic, the value of calculus in one’s education, or, damn it, the Brooklyn Bridge.

Don’t believe me? Ask Aristotle. He

says that the speaker’s credibility is the rock-bottom base for effective speech.

If your audience buys that you are bright, ethical (at least by their standards), and ready to back them up, then, friend, you’ve got ‘em. Reel them in!

EXCEPT, what if you’re not those things? What if you’re just a good fake?

Meeting Tim Mead made their visit that much more special.

For now, the former long-time vice president/ communications at the Los Angeles Angels, who started his new job June 24, is focused internally, he said in an interview leading up to Induction Weekend.

Spending much of his time so far getting to know the organization at 25 Main St. and, in particular, the people who run it, he’s concluded, “Four weeks in, you know you’re around some special people.”

His predecessor, Jeff Idelson, who held the job for 11 years, left him with a well-run operation, judging from his description of the

And he represented the Hall at the All-Star Game July 9 in Cleveland.

Asked what visiting fans should be sure to see this weekend in the Hall Fame – beyond the Hall of Plaques – he quickly answered, “the holy grail” – “Shoebox Memories,” the new exhibit that features the best and rarest of baseball cards from the Hall’s collection of 200,000.

“One couple, whose wedding I officiated as Mayor, is coming up this fall to pick up theirs!”

Katz joined the Friends of Doubleday following his tenure as mayor, where he helped secure $5 million in funding to take on a $5.8 million renovation of the historic field. “It was one of the few things I wanted to do in my post-mayor life,” he said. “Knowing the history of the Friends and of the field, it helps.”

Of the total, $3 million came from The Empire State Development Corp., and $1 million each from former Assemblyman Bill Magee, D-Nelson, and state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, leaving only $800,000 for the Friends to raise.

“Doubleday Field needs a fundraising arm,” said Katz.

“In addition to projects, there are annual costs. For example, bird netting costs $20,000 – the Village raised it, but the Friends can help when the Village needs help with their fundraising.”

Though the Friends started in the early 1990s, the effort stalled for a time, before interest in Doubleday Field

revived in 2010.

The Friends operate independent of the village, made up of volunteers and a board that includes Landmark Inn owner Fred Schneider, Hall Vice President/ Communications Jon Shestakofsky; Travis Chock, CEO of Baseballism, the high-end retailer; and Jeffery T. More of The Alpine Group, a national recruiter for the medical sector.

The renovations to the field are underway, and Katz believes they are on target for completion by Induction 2020, the 100th birthday of

the field’s completion. “The new bleachers are gorgeous,” he said. “They’re more in line with what people expect nowadays from a baseball field.”

The top tier, he said, will be a pavilion for people to host parties. Additionally, the bleachers will be built to ADA accessibility standards.

Raising $800,000 to close the final funding gap “is not insurmountable,” said Katz.

older photos, the Red Bursey playground was in front of the field,” he said. “We’re trying to get it back to that historical look.”

In addition to the benches and signed merchandise for sale on the Friends of Doubleday website, Katz has also started offering historic tours of the field, led by baseball experts Tom Heitz, the former Hall librarian; Pete Henrici, the veteran baseball merchant; and Ted Spencer, the Hall’s former chief curator and vice president.

“Sometimes the myth gets in the way of really good history,” Katz said. “The tours are more entertaining, they’re a living history.”

The tours, available by reservation, are held 8-9 a.m. every Wednesday and Thursday and take fans through the grandstand, into the dugout and then onto the historic field, where they can take pictures or take a run around the bases.

Taking the tour also gets you an exclusive pin, with the logo designed by Todd Radom, who has created logos for MLB teams, the Super Bowl and the Baseball Hall of Fame. The pin can also be received with a $50 donation to the Friends.

“We’re trying to do our part for Doubleday Field,” said Katz. “It has national renown. Now we’re saying, ‘can you help us?’”

lifelong love for everything baseball.

That’s why a small group of men started the Friends of Doubleday in the early 1990s, according to John Rudy, a retired lawyer and now Cooperstown Baseball B&B proprietor, who was present at the creation.

The story of the Friends’ founding began in the summer of 1985 when Rudy, still practicing law in New York City, and 30 other men from all over the country enrolled in a fantasy baseball camp in Cooperstown.

“We got our own teams and uniforms. We stayed at The Otesaga. And we all got to play on teams with these former Major League players for three days on Doubleday Field,” he said. “It was incredible.”

Rudy didn’t go to the 1986 camp, but he enrolled in the 1987 one with 50 other guys.

That summer, though, things went awry.

“Three weeks before it was to happen, we received a letter from the man who started the camp, Max Shapiro, saying he couldn’t do the camp that summer,” said Rudy. “He had gone bankrupt – and, furthermore, would not be able to return our money.”

The men decided they’d do the camp, anyway.

“We already had our airfare, we found umpires, booked rooms, and we put together teams and games,” Rudy said.

“And we had a blast again.”

Three who put together the 1987 camp, Bob Wagner, an ophthalmologist in Florida, Ed Berchich, a coroner in Ohio, and Ralph Lock, a cardiac surgeon, also in Ohio, went on to form “The Legends of Baseball” camps in 1994 modeled after Shapiro’s fantasy camps.

Around that time, the men noticed Doubleday was looking worn.

“We thought it would be good if Doubleday had a tarp,” Rudy said. “We’d pass the hat and collect money for one.”

The field belonged to the Village of Cooperstown, so they spoke with Joe Harris, then manager of the field.

“Harris asked what people would want in return for buying a tarp,” Rudy said.

“Bob told him, they want their names on plaques in Cooperstown. The joke was just not saying where the plaques were placed.”

It worked. Doubleday got a tarp.

The men then noticed Doubleday had structural problems. Ralph Lock and his son, Tom, decided to form a foundation and to collect funds for repairs. Rudy joined, lending his expertise in establishing legal contracts and helping to get Friends’ incorporated and 501(c)3 status quickly.

Retired lawyer and Cooperstown Baseball B&B proprietor John Rudy was a member of the original Friends of Doubleday, who in 1994 were foiled at every turn. little trouble locating funding sources, but they confronted resistance and recalcitrance from village leaders when they presented funding proposals for Doubleday, Rudy recalls.

“They had legitimate skepticism in the beginning,” Rudy said. “They wanted to know if we were out to take it over from them. We told them, ‘We don’t want anything out of it.

We just love baseball.’”

But the village kept throwing obstacles up. First,

they would not allow companies to advertise at the field.

“They wouldn’t let CocaCola put signs up even when Coca-Cola was ready to give funding for Doubleday,” Rudy said. “So, we couldn’t get funding from them.”

Then, the village set up strict contractual requirements “with protracted times” of approving the Friends’ fulfillment of them.

“It also made it tough because everyone involved lived elsewhere in the country and we all had full-time jobs,” Rudy said. “I would get a phone call from Tom in Ohio asking if I could go to a village trustees’ meeting in the middle of winter that Tuesday night.”

The Friends’ did raise some money from setting up “pavers,” bricks at Doubleday with names of people and organizations who donated funds. Rudy bought two, one with “The Rudys” on it, the other with the name of his Cooperstown’s inn, “Baseball Bed and Breakfast.”

Frustrated, Rudy eventually resigned, and the other members effectively stopped their fundraising efforts.

“It sort of withered on the vine,” Rudy said. “But fortunately, Jeff Katz has reconstituted Friends of Doubleday now. It’s great for the town.”

IN MEMORIAM Troop C’s H. Karl Chandler, 82; Investigator In Ricky Parisian Case

ONEONTA – H. Karl Chandler, 82, who rose to lead the Troop C Major Crimes Division in 38 years with the state police, died peacefully at home on July 10, 2019, after a nine-year battle with cancer.

Senior investigator in the case of Ricky Parisian, the state trooper shot during a 1993 holdup in a Southside supermarket, Karl was born on Jan. 17, 1937, in Sayre,

Pa., to Wilber Chandler and Alberta VanGorder Chandler.

He graduated from Athens (Pa.) Central School, where he was a three-sport athlete, participating in baseball, basketball and football. At 10 years old, Karl hit a home run at the Williamsport Little League World Series.

On July 7, 1966, Trooper H.K. Chandler was reassigned as investigator in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Troop C. On Sept. 25, 1978 was promoted to senior investigation and head of the Major Crimes Division until his retirement on Dec. 7, 1996. Karl served the state police for 38 years.

His first love was to the state police, never wanting to take a vacation because he loved what he did.

Karl married Gloria VanVranken Chandler on March 31, 1999 at the Otsego County Courthouse, Cooperstown, where they first met.

His pastimes were playing golf and traveling

to Civil War battlefields all over the United States.

Karl especially enjoyed Gettysburg and would visit at least H. Karl twice a year.

Chandler His travels also took him to many sports activities for Emilee, Kelsey and Kyle.

Karl is survived by his wife, Gloria, his stepdaughter; Lisa (Jeremy) Harvey, Burlington Flats; his grandchildren, Emilee VanDewerker (Braden Jaquay), New Berlin, Kelsey King, Burlington Flats, and Kyle King, formerly of Burlington Flats and now Lewiston, Idaho; and

niece Lynn (Gregg) Baulch, Burlington Flats.

He is further survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Shirley Milbert, Delmar, Thomas and Joanne Slentz, Burlington Flats, James and Christine Hickling, Pleasant Brook, and Carroll and Bettina Munson, Bluffton, S.C., together with many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving is his son, Sheridan (Lisa) Chandler of Horseheads, and grandchildren, Josh and Jessica and their families.

Karl was predeceased by his father and mother, brother William Chandler, sister Sharon Chandler Cole, and brother-in-law Harold Cole.

Steven C. Naatz, 67; Forester, Outdoorsman, Entrepreneur SCHENEVUS – Steven C. Naatz, 67, formerly of Goodyear Lake, a forester who could identify every tree and animal by its Latin name and proprietor of Naatz Excavating & Forestry, passed Steven Naatz away on Sunday, July 7, 2019, with family by his side.

Steve was born on Sept.

30, 1951, at Fox Hospital in Oneonta to Audrey V. (Baumann) and William M. Naatz of Emmons, the middle of five children. He graduated from Oneonta High School, earned an A.A.S. from the SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry Ranger School in Wanakena, then received a M.S. from Colorado State University.

He served in the Army National Guard as a senior surveyor at Fort Belvoir, Va. A forester by trade, he was a longtime employee of Phillips Lumber Co. in Hartwick. He also held positions with the state Department of Environmental Conservation in Fisheries & Game Management. He later owned and operated Naatz Excavating and Forestry, and was also a general contractor who built custom homes.

Steve was a very loving father and stepfather. He had an incredible passion for the outdoors and conservation.

He was a true woodsman, known for wearing flannel shirts and jeans in all seasons, and able to identify every tree and animal by its Latin name.

He was an active member of the Oneonta American Legion and Elks Lodge, where he established and hosted the very successful annual William M. Naatz Memorial Sportsman’s Game Dinner for more than 30 years. He was also a member of the Sixth Ward Athletic Club of Oneonta.

Steve is preceded by his parents, Audrey and Bill; sister Julie Naatz; and

brothers William “Rick” and Kevin Naatz.

He will be dearly missed by his longtime partner, Patty Carimando of Schenevus; children Ryan Naatz of Goodyear Lake, Tasha Naatz (Aaron Fuller) of Boston, Susan Carimando of Schenevus, Anthony

Carimando (Amanda) of Schenevus, and Angelo Carimando (Megan Connolly) of Oneonta; grandchildren, Alexis, Anthony, Amelia and Tony of Schenevus; sister, Pamela Naatz-Runner of San Diego, CA; nephew, Justin Naatz of Goodyear Lake; dog,

Mickey; along with other family and close friends.

A private memorial gathering will be held for family and friends later this month.

Fenimore Celebrates Summer Of Herb Ritts

GALA/From A3 Harris was on hand for this year’s rockthemed Fenimore Museum Gala on Friday, July 12, where he gave a keynote speech about the relationships between music and art. “He went back in time and touched on a lot of things,” said Todd Kenyon, director of marketing.

The gala also included a live auction with auctioneer Don Raddatz, with grass-fed beef items from the Green Cow, Templeton Hall rentals and Bump Tavern dinner parties.

Silent auction items included several paintings by Robert Schneider, now Stamford mayor, and Susan Jones Kenyon, a Glimmerglass Festival 2020 VIP Package, and five items donated from the Thaws’ private collection.

The “Paddle Auction” was also revived, where bidders, prompted by Paul D’Ambrosio – in Paul McCartney’s Sgt. Pepper costume! — raised paddles to show how much they were willing to donate

to The Fenimore’s educational program scholarships, which helps students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford to visit the museum.

In all, both auctions raised $50,000. “Last year, the paddle auction raised $9,000,” said Kenyon. “This year, it was $15,000.”

The next afternoon, Harris moderated a panel, “Herb Ritts and the Image of Rock Music,” featuring Laurie Kratochvil, former Rolling Stone director of photography; John Covach, director of University of Rochester’s Institute for Popular Music, and Rory Ritts, Herb Ritts’ younger brother.

“Herb brought magic to a shoot,” said Kratochvil. “He could equalize everybody.

I was accused of having a five-card Rolodex, but Herb really was my favorite.

He was so easy to work with.”

Ritts shot 45 Rolling Stone covers, and, according to Kratochvil, and only “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer Sinead O’Connor ever gave him a problem. “She was very shy and not all that engaging,” she said.

“But he got the close-up of her face and bleached it out, and that was the cover.”

“A photographer has to decide if they’re taking a photograph or making a photograph,” said Kratochvil. “Herb could do both.”

Ehmann Sees Understanding Gen Z As Key To Future EHMANN/From A3 To adapt quickly to change, Ehmann said, students need to have a liberal arts education, allowing them “to dive deep into a discipline and become an expert” and to acquire practical skills.

That combination makes students and Hartwick “agile, resilient, and empathetic.”

“With those softer skills, students can meet people where they’re at,” Ehmann said.

Ehmann has proven to be agile himself throughout his career, most of it teaching and administering liberal arts colleges, three in Upstate New York.

He began as a geologist for the U.S. Department of Interior. After four years, he decided to pursue an academic career and earned a Ph.D. in Biology, with a focus on Ecology, at Utah State University.

He then taught at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, before joining Seattle University as associate provost, as well as teaching biology.

He then served two tenures at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry.

Kahanov’s changed career paths shortly after, as an athletic trainer at San Francisco State, she was asked to cover a faculty member’s class. “I loved teaching,” she said.

“After a while, I found myself thinking more about teaching rather than treating athletes.”

She studied for her Ed.D. at University of San Francisco while continuing to work at SFSU and helping her husband, an athletic trainer himself, raise their son Yohah and daughter Noam, now 19 and 16. The experience gave her insight into and empathy for students who work and/or care for families while going to school.

After earning her Ed.D. in 1998, Kahanov joined San Jose State as director and part-time faculty member of its athletic training program, where she stayed 11 years. In 2009, she got a phone call from Indiana State University in Terra Haute, asking her to start an Applied Rehabilitation Sciences program there.

“I was lucky to have family willing to move there in 2009,” she said. “So, I took the leap.”

Over five years at ISU, Kahanov created five accredited health programs, but she decided someone else should manage them. When the position of dean of Health Sciences

and Education at Misericordia University, a small liberal arts college in Dallas, Pa., opened, she applied for it.

“It was the first time I made a calculated move in my career,” she said.

During five years at Misericordia, 2014-19, she helped grow the student body 1,000 to 3,000 by setting up online programs and recruiting students nationwide.

“Misericordia was an amazing training ground for provost,” said Kahanov.

“At a small institution, I had access to the president and vice president.”

As for SUNY, Kahanov is impressed with the sense of community both on campus and off. “The pride in Oneonta is palpable,” she said. “I’m also impressed with people’s relationship to the environment.

I see concerted efforts for sustainability.”

In her new job, Kahanov said, “I’m there to work with faculty to create a place for discussion and contemplation, for students to have an excellent experience in education at SUNY and to spread the good word.”

In each of his administrative positions, Ehmann said, he developed curriculum or programs that reflected the changing needs of liberal arts’ undergraduates. At Marymount University, he implemented measures that led to increasing freshman and graduate student enrollment.

Ehmann believes liberal arts are at a crucial “institutional moment” because the next generation of college students have different needs from previous ones.

“The incoming freshman class this fall will be members of Generation Z, who are similar to Baby Boomers,” he said. “They realize they have to roll up their sleeves, that things won’t just be handed

to them. They want more practical skills, a toolkit, to pursue their futures.”

Generation Z members are also “very socialized and can talk easily about their experiences,” he said, “but they haven’t yet stitched all their experiences together.

“In college, we want to guide and mentor them in thoughtful ways, for them to learn it’s not just a grab-and-go experience.”

Faculty will guide Hartwick students to “outside-the-school” opportunities as well, such as internships, studying abroad, and honors programs.

Hartwick alumni have proven to be excellent role models as well, demonstrating to students how they have put their degrees to work.

As Hartwick’s provost, he sees his role as a facilitator, “to help provide conditions for faculty to teach and for students to learn, develop new programs, and hire excellent faculty.”

“I’m here to help Hartwick go where it wants to go,” Ehmann said.

Realtor Nancy Angerer is having a structural engineer explore how easy it may be to convert the CVS basement into a parking garage.

Asked if Village Hall plans to play a role in the property’s redevelopment, the deputy mayor said, “We’re watching, but at this point it’s a private business transaction between the owner and the potential buyer.”
