naked man took advantage of the break between the extra innings and the 4th of July fireworks to streak across the Oneonta Outlaws outfield last Thursday.

“We got a call on the radio that there was a naked man running across Damaschke Field,” said Police Chief Doug Brenner. “One of our guys asked for a description, and the caller said, ‘It’s a guy with no clothes on!’”

A video recorded at the scene showed the man, who has not yet been identified, climbing the fence before vanishing into the crowd.

Liberty Mutual CEO New Hartwick Trustees’ Chair ONEONTA

L

iberty Mutual Insurance Group President CEO David H. Long, ’83, who received an honorary doctorate in 2014, is the new chair of the Hartwick College Board of Trustees, effective July 1, the college announced Monday, July 8.

He succeeds Francis D. Landrey, father of a 2006 graduate, board chair since 2013.

Long was a Hartwick trustee in 2002-11, and rejoined the board in 2016.

He was elected vice chair in 2018.

College President Margaret L. Drugovich praised “his deep commit-

ment to Hartwick, as well as his appreciation for the college’s historic place in American higher education, and the college’s importance to our local community.”

She cited his experience as a corporate leader and experience with non-profits and Hartwick as making him “well-prepared to guide the board as it navigates the rapidly changing higher education landscape.”

Long began his career with Liberty Mutual in 1985 as a financial analyst.

Since then, he has held positions of increasing responsibility in the company’s International Operations, Commercial Markets, Underwriting and Financial, and Mergers and Acquisitions segments.

After earning a bachelor of arts in mathematics from

Hartwick College in 1983, Long graduated first in his class from Boston College with a master’s Long degree in finance.

As an undergraduate at Hartwick, he was named a John Christopher Hartwick Scholar – the College’s highest academic recognition – and was selected as an All-American on Hartwick’s Division I Soccer team.

He was inducted into the Hartwick College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004, and in 2013 he received the Distinguished Alumnus award from the Hartwick College Alumni Association.

“Are our roads safer?” asked Sinnott Gardner.

“You really think they” – all the prospective new drivers, many financially challenged – “are going to run out and get car insurance? You have citizens who don’t have car insurance.”

She continued, “Federal law says you aren’t supposed to be here illegally. So how can I turn about and give you a driver’s license? The federal government is going to have to answer that question for us.”

County Board’s ‘Green Light’ Resolution Was Litmus Test, And Democrats Failed So Pay Attention Nov. 5, Particularly Voters In District 3 (Otego, Laurens)

irst, it should be said that there’s a troubling lack of interest in running this year for the Otsego County Board of Representatives, whose reach, from road building to social services, touches all 60,094 of us.

In the 14 districts, there are only three contests coming out of the June 25 primary: ► In District 2, the one-term Democrat, former Morris Town Board member Michele Farwell, a Democrat, is being challenged by Marcia Hoag, a former Pittsfield Town Board member who is running on the Voice of the People line, but says she is allied with Republicans. ► In District 3, where former board chair Kathy Clark, R-Otego/Laurens, is retiring. Republican Rick Brockway, a retiring ferrier and outdoor columnist, and Democrat Caitlin Ogden, a Baseball Hall of Fame

We’ll see. If Democrats do gain a majority Nov. 5, there will be a hunger for spoils, such as they are.

Law, Precedent Prohibit Giving Drivers’ Licenses To People Here Illegally Editor’s Note: Saratoga County Clerk Craig Hayner developed this position paper on the state’s new “Green Light” law before asking President Trump to intervene and ensure it doesn’t require New York State’s county clerks to violate their oaths of office by issuing drivers’ licenses to undocumented residents/illegal aliens.

he ability of states to regulate who drives on their roadways dates back to the Model T with the 1916 Supreme Court decision regarding Frank J. Kane v the State of New CRAIG Jersey, which found HAYNER the state within its right to issue registration fees.

States were further supported in regulating who drives in 1999 when the Ninth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, in the case of Donald S. Miller v the California Department of Motor Vehicles,

ruled that there is no “fundamental right to drive.” And again on June 7, 2007, when New York’s highest court upheld the state DMV’s right to require Social Security numbers (SSN) from driver-license applicants or a letter of ineligibility from the Social Security Administration, in the case Cubas v Martinez.

Read Our Declaration Of Independence – Then, Stand Up For It To the Editor: The Fourth of July has come and gone. Mine was special. It wasn’t the parade or the fireworks. It was the reading of the Declaration of Independence by 46 community volunteers at the Shakespeare & Company facility in Lenox, Mass.

If you haven’t read the Declaration of Independence for many years (I sure haven’t) it was a real

eye opener. Phrase after phrase, line after line, document the reasons for why the 13 colonies chose to declare independence from the King of Great Britain, George III. Each reason rang true with stunning clarity.

In this document our Founding Fathers enumerated multiple examples of oppression that sadly apply as well today as they did in 1776. Reference to free-

dom of speech, equality for all regardless of race and religion, respect for the rights of immigrants, refusal to assent to laws, obstructing the administration of justice, cutting off trade with foreign nations, and excited domestic violence.

All of these oppressive acts continue today, and are defended by many current elected officials who function with a greater inter-

To the Editor: State law governs the issuance of driver’s licenses.

Since 1993, 13 states and D.C. have issued licenses to residents – i.e. some of them could be illegal aliens.

This does not give the cardholder the right to vote.

In fact, it says that right on the card.

What it does is bring them into compliance concerning requirements for car insurance, car registration, and traffic tickets, all the regulations that are pertinent to what they’re doing – driving a car.

In other states, they are

called “privilege cards” and are not valid IDs for voting.

recently, I encourage you, even challenge you to read it with an open mind, then ask yourself if America is currently living up to the tenets described by this historic declaration.

We Need More Natural Gas? For What?

To the Editor: Why does our area need more natural gas? Since the ’50s and ’60s, our area industries have, for the most part, shrunk in size, while employment levels have been buoyed by the growth in the “not for profit” service sector.

Our area has had no population growth since the Civil War! s mandated by the Constitution, the United States conducts a decennial census.

This once-every-10-year count of the population – it is coming up in April 2020 – shapes the future of our communities and helps ensure political power is fairly allocated among the states and at the local level.

Some communities, like those with higher rates of low-income households and people of color, have historically been classified as hard to count.

In Otsego County, hard-to-count communities include the Sixth Ward and parts of the Fifth and Eighth wards in the City of Oneonta, and census tract 5913, which encompasses SUNY Oneonta.

Other hard-to-count communi-

ties are the towns of Oneonta and Hartwick, Milford Center, the areas of Morris-Gilbertsville and WestfordDecatur.

If communities are not fully counted in the 2020 Census, it may result in DAN a significant loss in MASKIN political influence and power as well as federal funding and other resources.

New York State could lose a member of Congress, or Otsego County may give up representation in the state legislature. Giving up political power could mean losing

out on access to all kinds of resources, financial and otherwise, without a chance to fix the problem for another 10 years.

Following the lead of the national Community Action Partnership, OFO will engage in local efforts to ensure a complete count of the low-income “hard-to count” population in Otsego County.

Strategies will be implemented to communicate the importance of an accurate and complete 2020 Census count in Otsego County and measures put in place to assist families to access resources so they may participate in their civic duty.

150 Years Ago

The second annual commencement of Oneonta Union School occurred on Monday, July 12 and closed with the Tuesday evening following. The address before the Pioneer Society by Dr. Jewell was attended by a fair concourse of our citizens, but not nearly as large as it ought to have been. The address was excellent. The suggestions advanced ought to be made practical by our young people, tending as it did to the promotion of morality, virtue and purity. At the conclusion of the meeting they repaired to the residence of David Yager, where the Calliopa and Pioneer Societies were to hold their first annual reunion. The evening passed off pleasantly and profitably. The members of the Calliopa Society merit much commendation for their untiring efforts to prove their first attempt a success. Oneontans should be proud of the rough Pioneers and the more fair members of the Calliopa. Mr. and Mrs. Yager did much to conduce to the advantage and pleasure of the occasion. The exercises at the Presbyterian Church on Tuesday evening were flattering to the school, and indicated that its students are being thoroughly and properly instructed in whatever pertains to education. The orations, compositions, declamations and music were of the highest character, evincing the finest discrimination, style and beauty.

The announcement of the death of Charles E. Bunn on Saturday afternoon of last week came as a shock to his numerous friends in Oneonta, few of whom knew of his serious illness. Mr. Bunn was born in Hartwick 47 years ago. He was the son of William Bunn, a life-long resident of that town, and a brother of Mr. Henry C. Bunn of Mt. Vision. In 1861, being then only fifteen years of age, he enlisted in the 152nd New York volunteers and served his country well until the close of the war. In 1866 he came to Oneonta and engaged in business, and the following year was married, his wife being a daughter of M.H. Bissell, who with three children survives him. Kind, unselfish and generous in the days of prosperity, his death removes from our town one who will long be remembered with affectionate regret alike by his comrades on battle’s bloody field and by those who knew him in more peaceful walks of life.

Pat St. John, the self-proclaimed psychic who predicts a catastrophe at Niagara Falls this Sunday has taken a tour of the famous attraction and come away convinced of impending doom. “I can turn away and look toward Buffalo and feel absolutely fine,” said the housewife from Bridgewater, Connecticut. “But, when I turn toward Niagara Falls, I get a tremendous feeling right in my solar plexus.”

Mrs. St. John’s July 4 prediction of a disaster at Niagara Falls picked up considerably more public attention when a seismic alarm at the falls indicated that a huge mass of rock had shifted by a quarter inch. It could not be determined if the rocks had shifted at once or gradually since the sensors were installed in 1971. The U,S, Army Corps of Engineers who were brought to the falls after the alarm said that three days of monitoring sensor devices had shown no further evidence of any movement.

Local artists Bonnie Gale and Bertha Rogers were awarded a total of $1,000 in the third round of the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts Special Opportunity Stipend Program. Gale, a traditional willow basket maker July 1919 residing in Norwich received a stipend to study with a mentor. She will work with Stanley Kraus, a Polish Edward Byard. Money for its operation has been secured immigrant basket maker who lives in Rochester. Rogers, partly through N.Y.A. funds and partly through contributions a Delhi poet, will use her stipend to help pay her expenses from local merchants. That was a profound cultural moment, and it changed important human behaviors. It’s been the main force behind the progress made in recent years towards surviving on this planet. The hope was to maintain something like the middle-class lifestyle to which we have become accustomed.

The plan was to do it by replacing fossil fuels with eco-friendly renewables, poisonous chemicals with “natural” ingredients, and accumulated waste by recycling and composting.

But it didn’t quite work out that way, at least not yet.

New technologies (fracking) expanded access to oil and gas reserves, postponing “peak oil” indefinitely, while locking in our reliance on fossil fuels through low prices. Recycling has yet to absorb the vast waste stream, and organic alternatives, popular as they are, are far from replacing cheap, chemically based products.

In the meantime, the methane and CO2 pumped into the atmosphere by continued fossil-fuel use has brought us to the verge of uncontrollable climate change.

The easy steps of sustainable living – buying a Prius, recycling, eating organic food, switching to LED

lighting, etc. – are no longer enough. We need structural, not just personal, changes.

Our continued postfracking reliance on cheap fossil fuels has allowed the oil and gas industry to dominate the political system, frustrating the transition to renewables. Corporate-led deregulation has rolled back the environmental standards necessary to fully promote organic products and eliminate waste. Indeed, under Trump we’ve gone backwards on all these fronts.

• At this point, only upheaval from below seems likely to change national politics. And that will happen only when the urgency of the biggest threat – climate change – reaches a critical threshold in most minds. Because of it, we’ve witnessed in recent months massive wildfires out West, catastrophic floods in the Midwest, melting glaciers and polar ice packs, another record heat wave in Europe, accelerating wildlife extinctions – the list goes on.

The floods a few years back gave us a taste of what can happen here, though climate change for us so far has been mostly incremental and cumulative, rather than sudden and overwhelming.

But it’s not any less significant for that. Hundred-year floods now occur a lot more than once a century. Winters are milder. Tornados, once unheard of in our region, now occur repeatedly.

If you experience the

weather mostly when walking to and from your car, it’s easy to dismiss all this as some kind of delusion, a fake crisis. But if you’re a farmer, a gardener, someone who works outdoors, or manages infrastructure (powerlines, roads, etc.) exposed to the weather, you’re more likely to recognize that climate change is happening right before your eyes.

Sustainable living is both more important than ever, and even harder to achieve. To recognize its challenge is to feel its urgency, and especially the vital need to replace fossil fuels with renewables.

This is evident in the deliberations of the new Otsego County Energy Task Force, where climate change concerns and economic-development issues are coming together for the first time locally.

In response to this growing crisis Sustainable Otsego has evolved into a political action committee focused on local government. Given the failures of our major parties nationally and locally, Sustainable Otsego remains resolutely non-partisan.

Only they can force our representatives – local, state, and national – to do what’s necessary to secure the transition to sustainable living. No one else is going to do it.

Remember Republican Tim Walker eventually bowing to Democratic incumbent Andrew Marietta in Cooperstown/Fly Creek District 8. Other lively challengers included Democrats Nicole Dillingham (vs.

Keith McCarty, District 9, Richfield/Springfield) and Leslie Berliant (vs.

David Bliss, District 7, Cooperstown/Middlefield/ Cherry Valley).

Now, political junkies, THAT was an election season that can be credited, in large part, to the Democratic fever spiked by President Trump’s election the year before. If they had neglected the grassroots, Democrats, from Spokane, Wash., to Schenevus, were determined to make up for that.

What happened here, arguably, was part of that sweep.

• Still, the Democrats, while gaining two seats, fell short of a majority on the county board, something never achieved since 2006, when Republican Don Lindberg broke with the GOP and allied with Otego’s Ron Feldstein in Democrat-dominated coalition.

Low-key as it might be, Democrats are probably closer to seizing a true majority this year than they ever have been.

And take District 3, where

Republicans outnumber Democrats 1,367 to 873.

Still, the Democrats pulled a bit of a fast one that suggests some exceptional motivation.

In the June 25 primary, Republican Rick Brockway was seeking a second line on the Nov. 5 ballot, that of the Independence Party.

Unopposed, he thought. But the Democrats, led by the Cooperstown operative (and trustee) MacGuire Benton, organized a write-in campaign on Democrat Caitlin Ogden’s behalf, and seized that line on her behalf, 30-4.

That’s a bit too much inside baseball, but it shows the motivation of the OgdenMacGuire effort.

And, if Republicans don’t pay attention, they may wake up on Nov. 6 to find OgdenMacGuire effort has carried the day on Nov. 5.

The county board has a weighted voting system. And an Ogden win would shift 554 votes from R to D. The Republican majority (3,4212807) would shift enough to create a Democratic majority (3,361-2,867) Of course, there are other moving parts.

For instance, in District 2, where 1,199 Republicans are registered vs. 784 Democrats, Farwell could lose to Craig. That would shift 503 weighted votes back into the Republican column, preserving a 3,370 majority to the Democrats’ 2,858.

And, who knows, maybe young Wilson Wells, running for a second time, will capture Oneonta’s District 14. But registration, 459 Democratic to 4 Libertarian, tilts toward Democrat Jill Basile.

Usually, it might be argued there’s no such thing as a Republican or Democratic repaving job. But something happened at last month’s county board meeting that suggested otherwise, at least for now.

In a vote to oppose the “Green Light” bill, granting drivers’ licenses to undocumented immigrants/illegal aliens, only one Democrat – Andrew Stammell, D-Town of Oneonta – voted “aye.” The six other Democrats withheld approval – Gary Koutnik, Lapin and Martini voted “nay”; Farwell, Andrew Marietta and Shannon abstained.

With Democrats now in control of the state Senate, in addition to the Assembly and Governor’s Office, the “Green Light” bill passed, even though a Siena Poll found 61 percent of voters opposed it; higher Upstate, no doubt.

We’ve seen some strange stuff surface in Albany in the past few months since Democrats took control, including the proposed commercialization of marijuana, which narrowly failed.

Looking ahead, on other matters as on marijuana, there may be a local opt-out option.

Granted, some Democrats on the county board are estimable representatives. Still, at this point in New York State history, do we really want a Democratic county board to go forward lock-step with any nutty thing happening in Albany?

That’s up to you, the voters, to decide. So wake up. In particular, the voters in District 3 (Laurens, Otego), should be fully aware of what they may be voting for when they go – or don’t go – to the polls Nov. 5.

The Grigoli brood was raised in 111 Pioneer, where dad Sal, in his rare free time, restored the original woodwork and removed the hanging tiles in the dining room to discover and repair the ornate hammered-tin ceiling.

added thick-crust Sicilian pizza to the thin-crust NYC-style pie. He experimented with novel toppings, Chicken Bacon Parm and Chicken Wing among the most recent.

And summers, the crowd lined up out the door.

What’s not to like, said “Mrs. Sal.” “Eight slices and a pitcher of soda,” Diane said, “and you’ve fed your family.”

As to the regulars, “you knew everybody’s orders,” she said to her husband. He’d give them a little nod, and they’d sidle up to the counter to find their favorite hot slice waiting for them.

Of course, Sal has met too many baseball stars to remember, and in 1991 he and Diane began collecting signatures on a pizza paddle, beginning with Rod Carew, “one of my favorites,” the proprietor says.

Today, it’s a beloved memento.

The national media loved Sal’s, too. “I had a lot of write-ups,” he said. “People raved about us.”

And then, as age 60 approached, Sal and Diane agreed it was time. It

can take years to sell a pizzeria, he said, but Sal’s was special, and a sale was agreed upon in a matter of months.

The Grigolis continue to own the building, plus the one next door, so the husband will continue to manage the apartments.

The couple hopes to travel – in particular, to see their grandchildren on the West Coast, maybe Italy, maybe Greece. Who knows? He hopes to finally enjoy Otsego Lake, and maybe take up fishing.

Hearing the news, the kids all said, “Oh, Dad, we aren’t going to have the pizza anymore.”

The other Saturday morning, Sal Grigoli was getting ready to work out at the Clark Sports Center.

“I’ve never been here on a Saturday before,” he said.

The transaction was low-key, and the word is just getting around.

People ask him, “Are you going to leave the area?”

“Why would I leave here?” He looked at Diane; their eyes glistened.

“I love it here.”

30 Years Later, Killer Apologizes; But Sister Isn’t Buying In

In 1991, then age 29, Dart had been convicted of second-degree murder for stabbing Gillian to death with a “Rambo-style survival knife” – as described in the court transcript – on the second floor of the Oneonta Municipal Parking Garage on Sept. 12, 1989. He was sentenced to 25 years to life, but is up for parole yet again this November.

Jennifer asked to hear the letter he wrote to the parole board.

“Thirty years ago, I committed a horrible crime,” wrote Dart. “I got high, approached her with the intent to rob her, but she told me she didn’t have any money, and I stabbed her.”

“I only want you to know that I am sorry,” he continued. “I would give

Since Dart’s first parole hearing in 2014, Jennifer has lobbied to keep him incarcerated.

I touched her and she was cold.”

She flagged down a passing police cruiser, and waited while police confirmed her worst nightmare. “I was sitting on the curb and Joe Redmond” – the future police chief was an officer then – “walked up to

me shaking his head. I just started punching him, and he held me so tight.”

Police later identified Dart from Amy Chase-Snyder, who testified that she had seen him hanging around the parking garage just before Gillian was killed. Though he tried to tell police he was in Cherry Valley at the time of the murder, when they contrasted his statement with the witness, he confessed and drew police a map to where he had hidden the knife.

At no point during the trial did he indicate he had intended to rob her.

“Nothing was taken from her,” she said. “She had just cashed her paycheck, she had all of it. She had her jewelry.

And you don’t rob someone by sneaking up behind them and stabbing them in the neck.”

Inspired by the crime, state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, has co-sponsored a bill as part of of the Victim’s Justice

Agenda to extend the period between parole hearings for violent offenders from two years to five years.

“A horrific crime was committed here,” said Seward. “And the killer has had three parole hearings since 2014, with another scheduled this year. Every time he comes up, it’s traumatizing for the family, forcing them to needlessly relieve the horrendous details of the crime.”

As the 30th anniversary of Gillian’s death approaches, Jennifer is considering mounting a protest in Oneonta in hopes of inspiring people to write to the parole board and ask that Dart not be released.

“My terror is that he could still get out and do what he’s been doing,” she said. “He’d be right back here, he could rape, he could murder. He’s a dangerous, sick person.”

IN MEMORIAM Mary Ann Benjamin, 90; 22-Year Teacher At Center Street School ONEONTA – Mary Ann (Georgeson) Benjamin died peacefully, surrounded by family at her residence on Monday, June 23, 2019.

Mary was born to Nicholas and Christina Georgeson on July 21, 1928, in Oneonta, and spent the first years of her life in Oneonta.

At age 5, while her father remained in America, Mary moved with her mother to her parents’ homeland of Zoupana, Greece, for a year. Believing a better

life awaited his family in America, her father brought Mary and her mother back from Greece and the family moved to Norwich for a few years before settling back in Oneonta, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Mary graduated from Oneonta High School in 1946 and Hartwick College in 1957. She married Jack Benjamin on June 15, 1952.

Jack passed away on Jan. 9, 1980. In addition to raising five children, Mary was a

devoted teacher. She taught at Center Street School for 22 years.

Mary was an avid bowler.

She served as secretary for the Top Hatter’s Bowling League at Lamonica’s Bowling Lanes for 12 years and was the past president of the Oneonta Bowling Association. She continued to bowl in leagues into her seventies. She coached the boys and girls Oneonta High School bowling teams for 22 years.

In her later years, Mary loved to travel and visit friends in Florida. She

also traveled to many places over the years with her daughter and caretaker, Karen.

Mary was a Mary Ann member of the Benjamin First Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.

Mary wanted the world to be a better place for future generations. She hoped to be a part of any medical advancement that might allow that to occur. Therefore, as per her request she has donated her body to the

Anatomical Gift Program in Albany.

Mary is survived by her five children, her son Steven; her daughter, Karen; her son and daughter in-law James and Susan; and her sons Mark and Michael Benjamin. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Jack Arthur, Nicholas, Megan, Andrew, Zach, Ryan, Jake, Steven, and Elaina Benjamin, and Mark Joseph Giallanzo; as well as nieces and nephews Christine (Larry) Takores and David, Diane, Gail, and Rick (Anne) Georgeson and

all their families: her many great-nieces and great- nephews.

She is also survived by her dear friend of 78 years, Agatha (Ranieri) Ludlam of Bradenton, Florida.

She was predeceased by her former husband, Jack Benjamin; her parents Nicholas and Christina Georgeson; and her brother and sister in-law, former mayor James and Charlotte Georgeson predecease Mary.

As per Mary’s request there will be no funeral services. A celebration of her life is plannedin the future.

Jean E. Manley, 92; Artist, Sculpture, Doll Magazine Editor ONEONTA – Jean Marion Eichenberger Manley, 92, of Oneonta, an artist, sculptor, graphic designer and, for a time, editor of Seeley’s Ceramics’ Doll Artisan magazine, died at home in her sleep, on June 29, 2019.

The daughter of Carl and Marion (King) Eichenberger of Rexford, Jean was born on March 30, 1927, in Schenectady. She graduated from Burnt Hills High School in Ballston Lake and attended Traphagen School of Fashion and Design in New York City.

As a graphic artist, she started in the ad layout department of the Schenectady Union Star, eventually becoming head of that department. After managing the ad department of Denby’s Department Store in Troy, she moved to San Antonio, Texas, with her husband, William Manley, where they had a son on March 8, 1968, also named William Manley.

Shortly thereafter, the family relocated to Oneonta, where Jean eventually produced ads for merchants including Wilber Bank and Winan’s Men’s Store. This led to years of work with The Village Printer in Laurens and Seeley’s Ceramics in Oneonta, where she helped produce their Doll Artisan magazine.

Jean studied painting with John Watrous and Stanley Bate at the Schenectady Museum and sculpture with Robert Blood, after which she become a member of the Oak Room Artists in Schenectady.

Jean had a number of onewoman shows and exhibited in juried shows in Saratoga, San Antonio, Oneonta, Cooperstown and Utica.

Her work is represented in

the permanent collection of Central New York Artists at Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica.

After retirement she produced posters and banners for the Catskill Symphony Orchestra and Orpheus Theater as well as donating time as a literacy volunteer and helping at The Lord’s Table.

Jean was an active member of Oneonta’s Main Street Artists, a group that meets weekly and has

produced hundreds of paintings, drawings and prints over their years of existence.

Many of the members of this group became some of Jean’s closest friends.

Jean is survived by her son, William Manley and his wife, Sue Faux, of Boston; cousins, Ronald King (Marlene) and Richard King (Diane) of Schenectady, Irma Cleveland of Washington State, Pat Foti (husband of her cousin, the

late Barbara Foti) and his family of Scotia; as well as numerous cousins in Montana and New Mexico.

Jean was predeceased by her ex-husband; parents; and several cousins from the Western U.S. Donations may be made to CANO (Community Artists Network of Oneonta) and the Susquehanna SPCA. A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.

“If we don’t plan ahead, we lose choices, which then limits our ability to be independent,” she added.

MacDonald believes growing up on her father’s farm in Delaware County played a role in her pursuing a career in gerontology.

“Farmers are used to being self-reliant, tough, and resilient,” said MacDonald, whose father, the oldest of 15 kids on his family’s farm, started farming on his own at age 11. “My father could never be in a nursing home in his final years.”

She “started to dabble in gerontology” while earning her BA in psychology at SUNY Cortland.

MacDonald then did what many young people in Upstate New York do after high school and college, which is also impacting older adults’ independence in later years – she moved to Florida to work for an Aid for the Aging office there.

After Florida, MacDonald earned a master’s in Gerontology at Miami University in Ohio, after which she took

a position as a caseworker for senior services in Lyon County with Nevada’s Human Services Agency.

After 18 months in that position, the agency promoted her to assistant director, whose focus was more on families with children than seniors.

After nine years in that position, she moved back to Delaware County and worked in its Office for the Aging for two years before being hired as director of Otsego County’s same office.

MacDonald’s childhood in rural New York and her experience working with seniors in different parts of the country have helped her see the pluses and minuses of Upstate New Yorkers having independent, fulfilling lives as seniors.

“We’re strong and resilient and have a very strong mindset,” she said.

“We need to, to survive the winters here. Those are pluses because you have to be tough to age and a willpower to age well.”

But those same qualities can hinder Upstate New Yorkers from finding and reaching out the supports they need when they are elderly.

“Their biggest fear is, if I show I can’t live by myself, they’ll put me in a nursing home and they’ll take away my house.”

Fortunately, she said, there is no system that allows a person’s house to be taken away. But MacDonald said, especially because of the continuing “out-migration of young adults looking for better opportunities, our families aren’t nearby like the used to be.”

“Usually, it’s not seniors calling us,” said MacDonald. “It’s their adult children who live four, five hours away asking for advice on specific concerns they have for their parents living alone.”

Whether a senior citizen or an adult calling about an aging parent, the Office for the Aging will point people to resources based on the dynamics they face.

“We show you an array of options that will best fit your situation,” MacDonald said. “Even if you live on

top of a mountain miles away from people and services, we can help you get formal and informal supports so you can still live there.”

MacDonald gave the example of wearing a personal emergency response or medical alert button. When the wearer pushes it, it signals a call center. “If you tell them it’s an emergency, they’ll call an ambulance; if it’s not, if you’ve just fallen and need help standing back up, they’ll call a neighbor or friend for you.”
