...And The Downtown That Might Be Again F irst and foremost, welcome back!

The half-million or so visitors who will be coming to Greater Cooperstown over the next 13 weeks – for Dreams Park and Cooperstown All-Star Village, for the Baseball Hall of Fame, for The Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers’ Museum and Hyde Hall, for Glimmerglass Festival, for fishing and boating and summering on Otsego Lake, for hiking and canoeing.

While our visitors are here, pretty much everybody prospers – the restaurants, stores, the rental and hospital business, banks, the hospitals and urgi-cares, every form of entertainment.

Because of you, our visitors, the rest of us get to experience things a rural area generally wouldn’t, from rock and roll (Herb Ritts at The Fenimore and Ommegang’s offerings) to chamber music and opera, baseball stars, to dozens of restaurants, many attractions, lots of golf courses and, of course, more fireworks per thousand population than any community in the country.

Thank you, and let’s all enjoy.

• But while we enjoy like grasshoppers, we have to think like ants.

After Labor Day, the underlying realities of life in Otsego County will still be there – outmigration, declining towns, poverty and all the attendant problems there.

Which brings us back to a topic of a few weeks ago: The redevelopment of downtown Cooperstown so it continues to charm visitors and entice them back, but with enough housing, variety of stores and other attractions so locals will keep coming downtown once the summer ends and visitors, too, have to get on with the more serious challenges of life.

In the midst of the back-and-forth about the future of the former CVS property at 100 Main St., Cooperstown’s Rena Lull shared a copy of the December 1984 edition of Town & Country magazine, which featured a shopping tour of the downtown by the former Mary “Cissie” Busch Hager, who was also featured in the cover photo and a feature story on the Hager family of Cooperstown. The variety of shops downtown was impressive. Here’s what’s happening: Since

the loss of CVS (it moved to the south end of the village in November 2017) and the closing of the Cooperstown General Store within weeks, the downtown is often pretty much empty in the off season.

A photo taken with a long lens at 3 p.m. on a Wednesday afternoon in March showed no one on the sidewalk from the Cooperstown Diner to the flagpole. No one.

Mostly, the empty CVS, its

lights on 24 hours a day, has been considered just an eyesore. Actually, it’s an opportunity, an opportunity to put a three-story building with stores on the ground floor and apartments above.

Nothing Is Perfect, But Green Movement Is Looking For Answers To the Editor: I don’t always catch Mike Zagata’s column, but every time I do, he’s revisiting the same two themes – one right, one wrong.

Theme One is that even “green” technologies have negative environmental

impacts. This is true, and it’s important to understand and keep in mind. When we get electricity from photovoltaics rather than coal or gas, we reduce our CO2 emissions, but we increase other impacts related to the mining of particular materi-

als and the manufacturing process for the panels.

Examples are easily multiplied, because very few technologies are actually zero-impact, never mind restorative, leaving ecosystems better than we found them. To the extent that people are naïve about that, it’s good to provide a reminder of reality.

Mr. Zagata’s second theme has two forms.

claim that something being touted as a “green” technology is actually worse than what we’re doing. This is what he said back on Jan. 24-25 about electric cars, and as discussed in my response published the next week, he was factually wrong.

Theme 2B doesn’t go as far as 2A. It’s not an explicit claim that some “green” technology is actually a bad idea. It is, instead, a focus

on the green technology’s environmental impacts, with an implication that it’s not worth adopting.

This argument makes little sense, and sometimes Mr. Zagata blends it with other misleading or false statements. His recent discussion of geothermal heating is a case in point.

Yes, geothermal uses some electricity for the operation of the system (though Mr. Zagata’s April

25-26 column on the subject suggested he didn’t understand the basic workings of heat pumps). And yes, most people’s electricity still comes – at least in part – from fossil-fuel combustion.

It’s nonetheless true that heating your house with geothermal produces less CO2 than running electricity through a baseboard heater, or burning gas, oil, Please See SEELEY, A5

On Sunday afternoon last, Mark Hemstreet, a small boy, went into the barn of Harvey Baker with matches, and soon after the barn was discovered to be on fire. The flames spread with such rapidity among the hay and other combustible material as soon to place it beyond rescue and it was totally consumed with the corn house adjoining.

A barn belonging to D. Rose, another to Abner A. Walling and a small building of Horace McCall’s were also destroyed. The loss of Mr. Baker, in buildings, hay, grain, tools, is fully $1,000; that of Mr. Rose $250; and Mr. Walling’s about $100. A valuable horse of Mr. Baker’s was rescued by engineer LaFountain of the A. & S. R.R. G.W. Ingalls was struck on the head by a piece of falling timber and severely hurt. The pulling down of one or two small buildings prevented the spread of the fire toward the river, and there being no wind it was easily kept from the houses on Main Street by the care and vigilance of the pail brigade wherein both women and men did good service. The old fogy engine reached the ground too late to put out the fire, a sad comment on our stingy village. We need a Fire Department and public liberality to keep it up.

A few only of the forty-five oil paintings exhibited last week by Professor and Mrs. J.B. Morse of Utica were sold in Oneonta, and none at all at the auction. The pictures were really fine examples of landscape and still life, and should Mr. Morse come again to this town he will doubtless be more liberally patronized.

Some sixty trout, large, speckled, and tempting alike to sight and palate, attracted every eye to the show window of Moore’s drug store last Thursday. The fish were a part only of the catch of Mssrs. D.F. Wilber and George E. Moore, who returned that day from a week’s outing in the Adirondacks with Albany friends.

National Suffrage for women was endorsed by the House of Representatives for the second time today when the Susan B. Anthony amendment resolution was adopted by a vote of 304 o 89. Supporters of the measure immediately arranged to carry their fight to the Senate, where, although twice defeated the last session, they are confident of obtaining the necessary two-thirds vote. The victory for the suffrage forces today was 42 votes more than the required two-thirds. House leaders of both parties in the brief debate preceding today’s vote, urged favorable action, but many

For the second time in two weeks firemen from Garrattsville and Hartwick were turned out to fight a barn fire. A blaze of suspicious origin according to officials completely destroyed a two-story barn on the Clyde Telfer property on Harrington Road in the Town of New Lisbon. Hartwick fireman Mike Basile discovered the fire about 11:30 p.m. and immediately notified his department. They responded with all apparatus and about 30 men. They also summoned Garrattsville firemen who responded with all of their apparatus and about 20 men. A tractor and old wagon were lost.

This was the second barn fire the two departments have responded to within the past 14 days. About a quarter mile down the road, a barn on the property of New York City resident Sidney Friedman was destroyed.

Gun control advocates afraid of losing momentum after successes last week in the Senate asked House GOP leaders May 1939 Tuesday for votes this week on the measures. Republican replied that they won’t be rushed to vote until mid-June.

House speaker Dennis Hastert and Judiciary Committee Southern Democrats opposed the measure, as did several Chairman Henry Hyde expressed support in broad terms for New England Republicans. The political division of the the new restrictions on gun sales voted by the Senate. “We vote showed that 200 Republicans, 102 Democrats, one support common sense legislation that keeps guns out of the Independent, and one Prohibitionist voted for adoption hands of unsupervised children,” Hastert said in a floor speech. while the negative poll showed 70 Democrats and 19 May 1999 Republicans. Speaker Gillett did not vote.

When you buy from a solar farm, you aren’t purifying yourself of involvement with fossil electricity, and you aren’t eliminating your environmental impact, and you shouldn’t tell yourself that you are. Nonetheless, you are helping. You’re increasing market demand for sources like solar that, while not perfect, are better. As that demand increases, our power system shifts to a mix of sources that are cleaner. Not clean, but cleaner. Not perfect, but still an improvement.

Green technologies are not miracle workers. Our daily lives will always have impacts on the world around us. But there are vitally important reasons for reducing those impacts, and there are practical ways of doing that, such as electric cars and geothermal heating.

Mr. Zagata’s crusade against these efforts is a disservice to the public.

Most recently, in his May 23-24 column, Mr. Zagata takes apart a reader’s claim that their electricity is “clean” because they get it from a supplier of renewable energy. Mr. Zagata here is partly right, because it’s true that all the power in the grid gets mingled together in ways that we don’t usually think about.

If I go to the farmer’s market and buy a steak from Tauzel’s, the beef I’m eating actually was raised in Schenevus; it’s not mixed in with a bunch of other beef from, say, a Nebraska feedlot.

Electricity is different. If I buy power from a solar farm in Laurens, I’m not getting those “electrons.” The power produced there is put onto the grid and finds its own best route through the vast web of producers and consumers.

As with geothermal, we’re at Mr. Zagata’s theme 2B: you may think your electricity is clean, but you’re still getting power

as useless in reducing crime and contrary to the Christian duty to seek redemption of evil doers and not their death.

A national trend of patients deferring health care is reflected in hospitals and medical offices in Otsego County according to local hospital administrators. The recession has meant patients think twice about elective care or making trips to an emergency room. Delaying treatment has a negative impact on revenues for hospitals and health care networks, which rely on income and reimbursements for providing services. “Our revenue is all driven off some sort of patient encounter,” said Mark Wright, vice president for finance at Fox Hospital. “This is unlike anything we’ve seen in the last 25 years.” “We’re okay at the moment,” said Dr. William Streck, chief executive officer at Bassett Healthcare. “But, there are no guarantees.” The two institutions announced in March that talks started last year about sharing services.

Can Only Small Business Save Us?

ne of the landmarks of the early environmental movement was the essay, “The Tragedy of the Commons,” published in 1968 by the ecologist Garrett Hardin in Science. It can be to an individual’s private advantage, he points out, to exploit common resources at the expense of others.

In the absence of other constraints, he argued, most people will take more than their share, out of greed or fear, eventually depleting the resources in question. By the same token, those who don’t take advantage for ADRIAN themselves end up KUZMINSKI with less.

• In a later essay, “Living on a Lifeboat,” he elaborates further: “Under a system of private property the man (or group of men) who own property recognize their responsibility to care for it, for if they don’t they will eventually suffer.

“The considerate herdsman who refrains from overloading the commons suffers more than a selfish one who says his needs are greater.”

Hardin highlights the disconnect in an open, unregulated commons between “operational responsibility” and the preservation of common resources. He insists that “idealism” – some form of restraint and selfsacrifice for the greater good – doesn’t help in this situation.

The only way to guarantee “operational responsibility,” Hardin argues, is if your survival depends on your owning and maintaining the resources you need. This means not just owning some personal possessions, but owning, as your private property, a productive enterprise providing goods and services on which your living depends. It means being in business for yourself.

This would require Village Hall to take a leadership role, to negotiate a sale agreement and to seek enough state funding to make the site’s redevelopment attractive to a private developer.

That’s happening all across Upstate. Last week, an article was excerpted from BBJN.com on a downstate developer building apartments in a former Dollar General store in Johnson City.

This week, BBJN.com reported (see page A4) on a much more ambitious – but similar – undertaking north of here at

the former Griffiss Air Force Base near Rome.

It’s happening all around us, and can happen in downtown Cooperstown, too.

• It’s already happened in Oneonta.

A decade ago, the City of Oneonta, under the late Mayor Dick Miller, successfully did repurpose former Bresee’s Department Store, which today is a flourishing apartment building with retail on the ground floor.

As Miller explained it at the time, the cost of renovating Bresee’s was “X.” But the completed project would only generate “X” minus “Y” in revenue.

In other words, it would be unprofitable, and thus of no interest to private developers.

Through state grants and other measures, City Hall provided “Y,” and that allowed Corning developer Chip Klugo to renovate one of Oneonta’s keystone properties and operate it profitably since.

Today, Klugo is doing the same with the former Stevens Hardware Store next door.

• Time is of the essence, so – reluctant as we may be at this time of year to get out of grasshopper mode – let’s shake it off and start thinking ant-like.

Let’s prepare that CFA application – CFAs applications, the main way to obtain state economic development funding, are due by mid-summer. Otsego Now, the county’s economic-development arm, would gladly help.

The inspiration for writing a second editorial so soon after the first was, admittedly, inspired by retired CCS teacher Rena Lull, who dropped off the December 1984 copy of Town & Country the other day, where young Mary “Cissie” Busch Hager took a T&C reporter on a tour of the downtown.

Yes, that was 35 years ago, but it shows the variety of stores that could succeed here and might, in some altered form, be recreated today.

• The other day, we picked up the phone and called Constance Gilson of Brookline, Mass., who owns 100 Main St., the former CVS building. She’s a lovely lady.

Her parents had a summer home on Otsego Lake, and the family has many fond memories of long-ago days here.

She’s 91, she said, and not actively involved in managing real estate. But no doubt she, or her brother, who is more handson, would be open to a sensible proposal that might preserve Cooperstown of memory, and reinvent it for a new age.

Happily, Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch has many fond memories of her own, and a native’s love of the Cooperstown that was. She’s THE ideal leader to make downtown what it should be and can be.

Perhaps a task force, perhaps chaired by Richard Sternberg, the retired physician and able trustee, would be a good way to get things moving.

Tuesday, May 28, the large stained-glass window from behind the old altar in the church that burned, “Christ At Gethsemane,” was installed behind the new altar, flanked by two smaller windows, all brought back to their original glow by Doug Hallberg, the Oneonta stained-glass designer and restorer.

Following the stricture of Methodism’s founder, John Wesley, everyone involved describes the interior as “starkly beautiful.”

The Sunday after the fire, March 19, 2017, 200 fellow Methodists from seven congregations joined their Milford colleagues in a service at the Upper Susquehanna Cultural Center, the former Congregational Church down the street.

From the pulpit, the Rev. Everett Bassett, Oneonta District superintendent, asked for a “season of prayer,” as called for by the church’s “Book of Discipline,” its operating manual.

An 11-person task force was formed, chaired by Lola Rathbone, recently retired Catskill Area Hospice executive director, and guided by Proverbs 3:5-6, quoted at the top of this article.

“We weren’t deciding for ourselves,” said Rathbone, rather, asking: “What would God want us to do?”

Bassett also recommended Rankin & Coppley’s “Check Vital Signs” as a way to assess the church’s health.

What is the purpose of building a new church? The task force soon settled on three areas of need: serving young families, serving the elderly population, and serving the poor.

Bassett concurred: A new church should be built.

And so did the district’s Committee on Buildings & Renovations, chaired by Joyce Miller of First UM, Oneonta, whom Pastor Sylvia had invited onto the task force.

“I think what helped is we were already growing,” said the pastor, who rebuilt the congregation from a handful of active members when she arrived in 2013. “There was 70 people at church the day of the fire.”

By spring 2017, the first of three whole-congregation conferences was convened, and it approved converting the task force to a building committee to move forward.

A second conference, at mid-summer, voted to buy Milford Manor Farms, which had gone out of business just up Route 28, and also voted to keep the original church site.

By then, Tom Rathbone, Lola’s husband and recently retired as SUNY Oneonta’s assistant vice president/facilities, assumed duties as clerk of the works. (At SUNY, he oversaw $30-40 million in construction a summer.

Asked about challenges in this job, he said, in construction, “everyday there’s a toothache.”)

The first Sunday in the new worship spacer, Pastor Sylvia surprised the congregation: The main stained-glass window, “Christ at Gethsamane,” had been repaired and was on a stand at the front of the room.

In the fall of 2017, RFPs were sent to 10 architects.

In late November, Jim Hundt, a partner in Foresight Architect, Schenectady, was chosen. Lola Rathbone called him “a spiritual man.

He was called to build churches.” He was experienced, and had written a book on the topic.

The third conference, in spring 2018, approved Hundt’s plan and the budget.

“We decided to build,” said the pastor, “but” – using insurance money, fundraising

An organized choir sings every Sunday. And when Ron Johnson of Cooperstown joined as music director, he alerted church members to Oneonta’s Lord’s Table, providing meals to the needy, and a team volunteers one Monday a month.

“People can see a new momentum, and they want to be part of it,” said Pastor Sylvia. Added Lola, “Members who were members are more active members.”

It is a busy place.

Simple Integrity Plans Net-Zero Apartments In Cooperstown

At the Village Board meeting on Tuesday, May 28, Edmonds revealed details about the proposed project: 12 two-bedroom units, with the six apartments on the first floor designated as handicap-accessible. There will also be 24 parking spaces.

He plans to price his apartments at approximately $1,350 a month, calculated as 30 percent of

someone making $54,000 a year. “’Affordable’ housing is a moving target,” he said. “We want it to be someplace that people can afford, and we feel like that will work in Cooperstown.”

It will not, however, use federal funds designated for low-income housing. “There’s limited housing for people in the middle-income range,” he said.

“It’s a great concept,” said Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch. “Our

housing survey shows that there’s a real need for apartment housing, such as with Bassett employees.”

But more than affordable, the building will also be a net-zero building, meaning that it produces as much renewable energy as it uses. “I have a background in netenergy buildings, and I think it is a positive for the village.”

Though there is currently a vacant structure on the property – originally a car dealership

– Edmonds plans to tear it down and build his building on a smaller footprint. “We’ll only use about 49 percent of the lot,” he said.

Fenimore Lane will be the building’s entry, and an egress will be built out onto Chestnut Street.

“The building currently touches the house between it and the Inn at Cooperstown,” he said. “The egress will create a buffer. It’s important that we protect the Inn at Cooperstown’s property.”

Though Simple Integrity will do the design and construction, Edmonds himself will own and maintain the property.

He shared the project with the trustees at the Village Board meeting in hopes that they would consider re-zoning the property for multi-family, rather than single family housing. The board recommended he take the project to HPARB and Planning boards for their recommendation as a next step.

Baseball Family Finds Dream Home Son Succeeds Mom On MCS Board, Both Also Starting Business Together

Though he intends to rent it out to baseball families for the near future, one day, he and his wife Kari intend to spend their retirement here.

“Our son was staying at the All-Star Village, but my wife Kari and I rented a motel,” he said. “Our friends rented houses, and we would go spend the evenings with them. We just looked around and thought it was such a good idea.

“As soon as I got home, I started looking into it.”

They connected with Michele Barry, a realtor who runs Lake Lady Property Management.

“She looked at houses for us and explained how it would work,” he said. “I worked on the finances, and when it was official, Kari and I came up for a weekend to look at the houses.”

That weekend was Cooptoberfest, and, in between enjoying fall in Otsego County, they looked at 10 potential sites, including the Milford farmhouse. “The minute my wife went inside, she loved it,” he said. “Me, I was just outside, looking at the beautiful land. It all just aligned.”

And they’re not the only ones who have started planning for retirement in the Cooperstown countryside. Barry has sold another baseball family – this one from Kansas City – an investment property.

“They came for baseball camps and fell in love,” she said. “It’s an emerging phenomenon. I know if I came here from someplace different, I’d want to retire here too.”

Margaret Savoie, Don Olin Realty, has also seen a surge. “People come up and love it here

and have bought property,” she said. “It’s a growing industry.”

The majority of her rental properties, she said, are sold to local investors. “It’s hard to maintain a home from a distance,” she said. “But buying houses and renting them is quite a deal.”

Several years ago, realtor Rob Lee said, he met a family in town for a vacation and sold them a parcel of land on Route 33 before they left. “The idea was that they would retire there,” he said. “They bought a house and put it up, and bought the property next to it as well.”

Then, only 18 months ago, Lee said, they followed through. “I meet people at the Doubleday Café and start talking to them, and sometimes I end up selling them a property!” he said.

The highlights included the Hyde Hall Easter Egg Hunt. “Michele made the house look so nice and homey,” he said.

“It was furnished when we bought it, but it needed a few things, and she went out and got them for us.”

He put the house up for rent and made a website, and soon, the rentals started coming in. “We were worried at first because we only had a few,” he said. “But now we only have two weeks left open!”

“Eventually, the property pays for itself,” said Barry. “It’s a great investment.”

But it’s more than an investment for Mellana.

“We’re not just out there to turn it over and make a profit,” he said. “We want everyone renting there to have the same great experience we had.”

He grew up absorbing his mother’s work on the board – “the policy, functionality, faculty and staff development.” And her work on the Milford Education Foundation, which has raised $2 million since its founding in 2014.

Susan said the funds are used to “build an alliance between businesses and education, to develop great opportunities and internships” for students.

Studying political science and seeing friends run for office also pique his interest in succeeding his mother.

“Young generations are getting involved in politics all over the country,” he said.

“We want to make positive impacts on our communities and shape the future for ourselves.”

In Milford, Will “thought the board should have a young person’s perspective, who knows technology and how it is changing.”

“I was not surprised RSS did not make the list,” Mayor Gary Herzig said. “Oneonta does need affordable funding, but unfortunately, the way RSS went about it was not the right way.”

RSS submitted its state application without support from the City of Oneonta.

Opponents of the project worried that the project – which included 14 units of housing designated for people in recovery from substance abuse – would lower property values, and expressed concern over state audits that allegedly showed excessive spending for entertainment and other unallowed expenditures.

Herzig also expressed concern that RSS had not met publicly with the neighborhood to address their concerns.

“I had recommended at that Planning Commission meeting for RSS to hold off a year, build community support and good will, listen to what the community would like, and make changes, and resubmit their plan after that,” said Herzig. “But they didn’t do that.”

Instead, he said, “They chose to pursue state funding without the Planning Commission’s approval or further dialogue with the community.”

However, Butz said meetings have been held with community and religious organizations. “There is a lot of support for this project,” he said. “It just hasn’t been as vocal as the people who do not support it.”

As for the new business, Will wanted to open a microbrewery after he “got hooked” on brewing in college and learned Upstate New York was “becoming the Silicon Valley of craft beer.”

He submitted his microbrewery idea to a business plan competition at Skidmore last April and won $1,000.

In late March, he started the Sanctuary Farm Brewing Co. Facebook page and website, with a logo and merchandise for sale. The taproom is projected to open in May 2020.

Susan said the events idea came “after two of my daughter had successful weddings at the farm.”

They broke ground a couple of weeks ago, with Susan’s husband Joe, a construction contractor, overseeing the renovation of the Wards’ large barn, built in 1903, for the events venue.

“The school board is like an extended family in Milford,” Susan said. “Everyone comes to the board from different perspectives, but we all focused on our goals and vision, which was to make the district the best rural school district in the state.”

Fox Nursing Home.

Bonnie was born on February 10, 1933 in Evansville, Indiana, a daughter of the late Genevieve Runau.

It was there that she met

the love of her life, Melvin Farmer. They were married in Evansville and have celebrated 64 years together.

In the early 1960s, the Farmers moved to upstate New York. After residing in several local communities through the years, they settled in West Davenport.

She found fulfillment working as a waitress at the Woolworth’s store in Oneonta. Later on, Bonnie and Mel opened their own restaurant in the Southside

Bonnie was a very influential person and a fixture at the River Street Baptist Church, serving as the Sunday School Superintendent and was Rev. Mel’s “right

hand”, taking care of all of the day to day business duties. She was also a member of the choir.

In her personal time, Bonnie loved to sew. She made many of her children’s

clothes and clothes for their dolls and later made clothes for her grandchildren.

Virginia ‘Gina’ Dwyer, 88; Unatego Teacher ONEONTA – Virginia A. “Gina” Dwyer, 88, who after raising her nine children began a second career teaching at Unatego Central School, peacefully passed away at home in the early morning hours of May 20, 2019.

Gina was born in Brooklyn, daughter of Ida O’Connor Smith and Norbert Smith, and grew up to be an accomplished young lady. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier Academy and attended Good Council College, then married Thomas F. Dwyer in 1952, and promptly moved to Camp Lejuene where he was stationed in the Marine Corps.

In 1954, they moved back to Brooklyn. In 1959, they settled in Nanuet and raised a family of nine children After her youngest child graduated from high school, Gina started another chapter of her life in Otsego County, where she purchased property, saw the completion of her dream log cabin home and began her teaching career for the Unatego Central School District.

She spent many years working with young adults at the Rockland State Hospital. She was also a 4-H leader in Rockland County.

When she made the move upstate, she “signed on” as a volunteer for the Henderson Boy Scout Camp, Maryland,

and enjoyed a number of years there, promoting Native American culture.

Gina always wanted to fly. In her late 70s and early 80s, she did exactly that and learned to “buzz” around the Catskill Mountain scenery in a Cessna 175 plane.

Gina is survived by sons, Brian Dwyer of Rockland County, Joseph Dwyer of Scarbro, W.Va., Chris (Claire) Dwyer of Hadley, Mass., Matthew Dwyer of Nanuet, Thomas Dwyer of

Virginia Dwyer

Maybrook; daughters, Virginia (Philip) Neidermier of Walden, Jeannine Dwyer of Scarbro, W.Va., and Mel Dwyer of Beckley,

W.Va. She was also a loving grandmother of nine grandchildren, Sarah, Colleen,

Jason, Justin, Jesse, Ian, Alex, Scott and Ryan; and proud to be a greatgrandmother of nine greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Dwyer; sister, Jeanne Marie Fleri; and son, Kevin J. Dwyer.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

June 8 Services Planned For Donald C. Axtell ONEONTA – A celebration of life will be held 1-3 p.m.

Saturday, June 8 for Donald Carey Axwell, 85, the former SUNY Oneonta baseball coach, who died Monday, Dec. 10, 2018. The service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 296 Main St. Oneonta.
