Westford’s McEvoy Runs For Assembly Seat Serving Springfield, Middlefield, Maryland

L

ocal tech-project manager and activist Chad McEvoy today announced his campaign in the 101st Assembly District.

A Democrat, he is challenging Republican Brian Miller of New Hartford.

In Otsego County, the 101st includes Springfield, Middlefield, Westford and Maryland. A long, narrow district, it extends from New Hartford, outside Utica, south to the Town of Montgomery in Orange County.

“We can do more for our area – focusing state resources on the needs of our communities – by working with, not against, the majority in Albany,” said McEvoy,

who ran against Republican county Rep. Peter Oberacker, R-Schenevus, last fall.

“I am McEvoy running because we need someone working to advance individual liberties and freedom, promote sustainable economic growth, protect the environment and utilize intelligent, data-driven policies to improve our quality of life,” he said.

Professionally, Chad recently managed the design and development of multimillion-dollar software

projects funded by major national nonprofits and companies like the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Google. He has also worked as an analyst and project manager for organizations such as the American Red Cross and Heifer International.

Chad spent several years volunteering in Africa for USAID-funded projects building agriculture and livestock databases. In 2015 he was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award from President Obama for work with Senegalese agricultural schools.

Additionally, he received a master’s degree in public policy from Johns Hopkins University.

GOP Committee Endorses Devlin, But Race Goes On SHERIFF/From A1 to campaign at least through the Sept. 11 GOP primary.

“It was a very fair process,” said county Republican Chairman Vince Casale. Both Devlin and Fernandez addressed several dozen committee members before the balloting. Casale said the outcome was 2-1 in Devlin’s favor, but Fernandez said the actual count was 42-27.

In interviews, both candidates said they anticipate the suspension of the sheriff’s prison-guard son, Ros, will be an issue.

Tuesday, Devlin said he outlined his department’s duties in addressing committee members, but also took the opportunity to correct inaccuracies in Fernandez’ statements to date.

For instance, he said, his opponent accused him of nepotism in hiring wife Laurie. “My wife was hired 14 years prior to my becoming sheriff,” the incumbent said.

Fernandez has also called him a “bully,” and the sheriff said he took issue with that.

Interviewed Monday, Fernandez said he briefed the committee on a number of the cases he helped solve locally during his 30-plus years with the state police, including a three-year investigation into the death of Donna Evans of Westford that included hiring the suspect through a “front” antique shop run by Amarillo, Texas, police.

He discussed the arrest of Corbin Douglas, the Morris man arrested for poisoning his son with oxycodone, the slaying of Les Bartlett of Springfield by an employee, and the arrest of Laurens farmer Herman Arbus’ son five years after the father “went missing.” The elder Arbus’ body has never been recovered; “when we find him, we’ll tack another 25 years on the sentence,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez, the husband of county Rep. Kathy Clark, R-Otego, the former county board chair, also described helping set up a “county terrorism zone” at Troop C after 911, the first of its kind in the state.

Coming around to the case of the sheriff’s son, suspended after a Jan. 5, 2017, incident at the jail, an instance of “poor judgment” in his opponent’s party.

While Devlin has called the case a political “witchhunt,” Fernandez said he attended a county board committee meet where “all board members,” Republicans and Democrats objected to a “police violence report” offered by the sheriff.

In his interview, Devlin, who often was at odds with Fernandez’s county board chair wife, said “political things are going on the background. People are starting to see that’s the case. I believe that will come out.”

He said he expects Clark’s successor at the board’s helm, David Bliss, R-Cooperstown/ Town of Middlefield, “will do what’s right. I believe he’s an honorable man. He will not allow her personal political opinion cloud his judgment.”

If Fernandez were to obtain the county Democratic crossendorsement, he could continue the campaign through the Nov. 6 general election.

Kim Muller, the Democratic county chair, couldn’t be reached to discuss whether that’s a possibility.

In other business, the committee endorsed John Salka, the Brookfield town supervisor, to run against Assemblyman Bill Magee, D-Nelson, for a third time. Casale said the Madison County GOP committee had endorsed Salka the week before.

Also endorsed for a second term was county Judge John Lambert of Cooperstown.

Ace Brewer Brings Samples Home To Snommegang BEER/From A1 Cooperstown, Chris, OHS ’89, is now the owner of Mason’s Brewing Co., and he debuted beer locally from his popular Brewer, Maine, plant at the fifth annual Snommegang craft beer festival Saturday, March 10.

“I started homebrewing about 14 years ago,” he said. “Having Ommegang right up the road, watching it transform from a small barn to this massive destination for craft beer, was an inspiration.”

But he didn’t initially set out to be a craft beer magnate. Following graduation from OHS, he went to the police academy and served on the Clay police force, near Syracuse, for two years.

He then spent eight years with the Bangor, Maine, police, including five years on the tactical team.

“We don’t have kids, so my wife and I were able to travel across the U.S. and to Europe in pursuit of craft beer,” he said. “That’s the catalyst for everything. You taste what you like and do a variation on that.”

Retiring from police work, he spent 13 years as a residential lender before opening Mason’s in 2016.

“I just happened to be sitting at a bar next to Forrest Brown, who became my brewmaster,” he said.

“We got talking, and he said he was looking for a different way. He’s an Army ex-ranger and a food scientist,

so he’s got the discipline and the science to make good beer.”

But more than science, said Morley, good beer is made from patience and good water, making his Brewer brewery a premier destination for serious beer enthusiasts.

“We worked on our recipes for a year and a half,” he said. “Our first beer was an IPA, but we also did a German Roggenbier, which is a rye lager. Not a lot of people were doing it at the time.”

Meanwhile, he was building his brewery on Brewer’s Penobscot River waterfront. It was not only the largest waterfront project at the time, but the largest microbrewery built in the state.

Soon, word began to spread.

“We’ve been written up twice in Down East Magazine,” he said. “We distribute in five states. I thought this would take five years, but we’ve been able to do it in two.”

The brewery restaurant serves burgers, pizza and pub food, and helped support the brewery in the early days. “Maine doesn’t have a huge population, so people are drawn in by the restaurant and they try a few beers,” he said. “Now, the beers support the restaurant!”

But naming is one of his favorite parts of the process. “It started with our Halloween beer, which was brewed with ghost peppers,” he said.

“We called it Ghost Reaper, and the names went from there.”

Among his favorites are “Hipster Apocalypse” and “Liquid Rapture,” both of which he brought with him to Snommegang. “It’s a play on the current beer scene,” he said. “No one wants to say they’re a hipster, but they are. It’s ironic and funny.”

The label artwork, by comic artist Ben Bishop, has also brought in some fans. “He’s done covers for ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’,” he said. “He’s great.”

ow thrilling it would be, of course, to have a congressman from Otsego County again.

At one time, it was routine. ►Judge William Cooper (1754-1809), of course – founder of Cooperstown and The Freeman’s Journal, among other notable accomplishments – represented us in Washington D.C. as a Federalist in the Sixth (1795-97) and Eighth (1799-1801) Congresses.

His successor, publisher of The Freeman’s John Prentiss (1784-1861), a Democrat (i.e., a Freeman), served two terms in the 1830s. ►Republican David Wilber (1829-90) of Milford, then Oneonta – secure in his hops and banking fortunes – represented us in Congress in the 1870s and 1880s, dying before he could serve his final term.

Four years later, his son, David Forrest Wilber, succeeded him for two terms.

NRA Works For Gunmakers, Not Gun Owners, Citizens To the Editor: When will catechized Second Amendment defenders realize that the NRA is no longer about protecting their right to own a gun?

For years now, their primary concern has not been your rights, but the rights of gun manufacturers to sell guns – all kinds of guns – in order to maximize their profits. That is where most of the NRA’s money to buy politicians comes from – not membership fees.

Our individual right to legally own a gun has never been in jeopardy, but our gun safety has been. Just since the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, more than 150,000 students attending at least 170 primary or secondary schools have experienced a shooting on campus. That figure is a conservative calculation and does not include dozens of suicides, accidents and after-school assaults that have also exposed youths to gunfire.

That statistic underscores how commonplace gun violence has become in America, with students in primary and high schools regularly performing drills on how to react in an “active shooter” situation. Those kinds of drills don’t happen anywhere else!

Just compare how many innocent people have been deprived of their guns to how many innocent people have been deprived of their lives – because of lax and non-existent gun safety laws. Whose interest is served by NRA’s massive spending on political campaigns?

While these bought-off politicians are quick to offer their “prayers and heart-felt condolences” at each and every gun massacre and school shooting, they consistently refuse as a group to do anything legislatively to guard against the next massacre. while ago now, we received a brochure from state Assemblyman Bill Magee which pointed out that unused prescription drugs could be disposed of at both the Oneonta Police Department and the Otsego County Sheriff’s Department, Town of Middlefield. It now should be noted, that Bassett is participating in a “Drug Take-Back” program.

Along with five other hospitals in the state, Bassett will accept leftover medications that are either outdated or not needed. Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the six-month pilot program allows individuals to

drop off unwanted, expired, or leftover medications, with no questions asked.

At a recent appointment at Bassett we checked out not only the locked box, but also the CATHERINE mail-in envelopes, LAKE located in the ELLSWORTH lobby of the Clinic Building here in Cooperstown, for the collection of such prescriptions.

In addition to the drop-off center in Cooperstown, medications will also be accepted at the O’Connor Hospital in Delhi and the FoxCare Pharmacy in Oneonta. We would encourage everyone who wishes to dispose of unneeded prescriptions to take advantage of this pilot program.

150 Years Ago

A fire was discovered on Friday morning last in the tin ware factory of A.C. Moody and Co., which was making fearful headway. With the only engine in town being at the machine shop for repairs, the citizens made a quick rally with pails of water and succeeded in subduing the flames. Young man, move over. Make way for a 65-year-old man who is coming to Oneonta to teach science in the high school. Furthermore, he is giving up a position with a university to come here. He is Ernest Hugo Westlund, father of Mrs. Jack Bresee, Taft Avenue. He and his wife wish to be near their daughter’s family. Mr. Westlund’s appointment, effective in September, was announced yesterday by School Superintendent Harold V. Hager. “The current emphasis on science has so stimulated the demand for science teachers that it is difficult to employ young teachers who have the desired experience,” Mr. Hager said. Mr. Westlund is now in Decatur, Illinois where he had taught science in the high school until he was obliged to retire under the state’s 65-year limit in the public schools. Millikin University is in Decatur and it has no such retirement provision, so it gave a contract to Mr. Westlund. Mr. Westlund graduated in 1911 from Lafayette, Indiana High School and took his B.S. and M.S from Purdue University, where he also did some teaching. His range of subjects at the high school level includes chemistry, physics, biology, general science, zoology, botany, algebra and geometry. In Oneonta his assignment will be high school biology and chemistry.

No funerals on Sunday – The pastors of the various churches at Worcester have united in a petition asking the people of the town to refrain from asking them to conduct funerals on Sunday. Funerals on the Sabbath, they allege, interfere with the regular services of the church. The ministers also ask that the public services at funerals be held in the churches instead of at the house, as is now common. They allege the reason for this course is greater convenience and better sanitary conditions. They also assert that many persons never enter a church, and that if these services are habitually held there, laggards at church service can occasionally be brought there.

Otsego County District Attorney George S. Kepner, Jr. and SUCO student Robyn Jonas appeared on the “Good Morning America” program to discuss whether hitchhikers should be fined, Kepner has been criticized recently for saying “hitchhikers should be fined after being rounded up” by police.

Kepner answered his detractors by noting that the prosecution of hitchhikers is one of the surest ways of cutting down the incidence of sexual assaults on them. “The only way we can arrest the wierdos and get them off the streets is after they do something,”

Kepner said. “Thumbing a ride is dangerous at best and clearly against the law.” According to Kepner, the anti-thumbing laws came into existence to maintain traffic flow and cut down on the potential for rear-end collisions caused by a lead vehicle stopping abruptly in the middle of a traffic lane to pick up a hitchhiker. “The concept of the safety of the hitchhiker,” Kepmer declared, “is a relatively new issue.”

Larger population gains are centered in areas around New York City, Rochester and Albany. Robert Scardamalia, the state’s chief demographer says “The mid-Hudson Valley between New York City and Albany has traditionally been one of the strongest areas of growth and that continues.”

Distinguished Service Professor Janet Nepkie of the music department of the State University College at Oneonta has been named the recipient of the college’s 2008 Academic Excellence Award for the Use of Instructional Technology. A member of the SUCO Music Department faculty since 1970, Nepkie developed and coordinates the college’s music industry program, which now has nearly 600 majors. She was promoted to Distinguished Service Professor, the highest faculty rank in SUCO in 2007. She holds a doctorate from New York University. Professor Nepkie is an accomplished musician who has performed as principal cellist for the Catskill Symphony, Utica Symphony and Glimmerglass Opera.

Nepkie served for five years as president of the national Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association. To recognize the award Nepkie will receive $1,000 from the college’s fund for academic excellence.

At Base, Economics Determines Forest Health

O

ur prior discussions have helped us understand that forest fragmentation isn’t the biggest threat to our forests and that we have more forested land today than we did in the 1960s.

We’ve looked at preservation as a management tool and now appreciate that preservation alone may have unintended consequences, i.e. the eviction of birds and other wildlife that rely on young forests for all or part of their habitat.

We’ve also lost some tree species to invasive critters like fungus and insects – among them the American Chestnut – and with the use of genetic engineering we’re trying to either bring them back or keep other species from declining.

Some examples of current threats include the gypsy moth (maples), emerald ash borer (EAB), hemlock wooly adelgid, Dutch elm disease, forest tent caterpillar (sugar maple), eastern tent caterpillar and peach bark beetle (black cherry), and the Asian long-horned beetle.

species haven’t developed adequate defense mechanisms and are thus vulnerable to attack.

• A less dramatic threat but with more long-lasting consequences may be the impact that property taxes have

on our forests.

For example, in a typical scenario, a person from downstate is looking for recreational property and buys 100 acres of forest land Upstate. He or she visits the property a few times a year, possibly harvests a deer or two and, after 10 years, looks back at how much they have used the property versus how much they have paid in taxes.

Looking at the imbalance of “joy” versus “pain” leads the owner to make the decision to sell the property and try to recover their perceived loss. To do that, he or she needs to make the most return they can on the sale of the 100 acres.

What usually happens is the property is first logged with the goal of making an immediate “profit” and with little concern for how that is done and when the land will be ready for a future harvest because ownership will change.

The next step is to divide the 100 acres parcel into two 50 acres tracts and sell them. They will likely be sold to another well-intentioned buyer looking for a place to recreate.

After another 10 years have passed the scenario repeats itself and now we have four 25-acre parcels with nothing left standing but low-quality wood and no way to generate the revenue needed to offset the taxes.

After the same scenario happens again, and history tells us it will, the remaining 12.5-acre tracts are too small to attract a logger and the wood on them is of such low quality that, without a market for it, it has no monetary value.

It will either be developed or become a mature stand of low-quality wood that will likely remain that way for decades and, due to the lack of Please See ZAGATA, A6

Democratic Ferment May Be Good News For Faso EDITORIAL/From A4 be in trouble.

It’s not clear that he is. In fact, the ferment on the Democrat side suggests the opposite.

Of the six Democratic men – Jeff Beals, former CIA operative from Woodstock; Kingston lawyer David Clegg; attorney Antonio Delgado, a Rhodes Scholar and former hip-hop impresario; Brian Flynn, an investor with Caroline Kennedy’s husband, Ed Schlossberg; and two young Hudson Valley contenders, Gareth Rhodes, former Cuomo aide, and Pat Ryan, an Iraq veteran and tech entrepreneur – no one has yet risen above the pack.

That’s not necessarily surprising, given the fragmentation of the 19th District, which stretches from the Hudson River to southwest of Oneonta, and includes all of Otsego, Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties, and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer.

Plus, what a fractured media market.

Some of the best political reporting is being done by the Daily Freeman in Kingston, but who thinks to look at dailyfreeman.com? No one paper even pretends to serve the whole 19th, and

TV and radio markets likewise divide up audience share.

• That makes someone like Erin Collier – the sole woman in the race – immediately identifiable. But, too typically these days, she came out of the gate declaring herself The Woman’s Candidate. Her introductory video (follow the link from www.allotsego. com) is titled, “I’m not going to let those boys beat me,” as if she’s in a contest between the genders.

Why write off 49 percent of the electorate, part of which she’ll certainly need if she were to win the June 26 Democratic candidate? No matter, it’s early enough to reposition.

Another oddity was the announcement a month ago by Democrat Diane Neal of Woodstock, who played an assistant district attorney for nine years on “Law & Order SVU,” that she would enter the race as an independent.

Cipher the arithmetic: A Republican incumbent splitting the voters with two Democrats: a Democrat-to-benamed, plus a Democratic independent, (the only candidate with a “Q rating,” which measures celebrity, as Democratic organizer Richard Sternberg of Cooperstown observed).

Restrained as he is in public, Faso must be secretly thrilled.

• You’ve read here before about that WAMC interview a year or two ago with the Siena Poll director, who stated that in the 19th you have a Republican and Democratic candidates who’ll win the party faithful, but the one who reaches into the center wins.

Thus, Republican Chris Gibson was unassailable in 2012-16, and Democrat Zephyr Teachout, attractive to Democrats and well-funded, easily fell to Faso in the end.

In truth, Faso is something of a sensible centrist, who probably would face little opposition if these were normal times. As he was in rising to GOP leader in the state Senate, he’s an organization man, seeking desirable committee assignments in Congress and to ingratiate himself with key leaders.

Ferment is good. But unchanneled ferment is chaos. Scenarios similar to the 19th’s are developing nationwide.

This may not be a Democratic year, after all.

And if President Trump emerges from meeting with Kim Jong Un with a peace treaty ending 60 years of hostilities, well…

Grassroots Reaction Alone Doesn’t Explain Anti-Fracking Success To the Editor: Adrian Kuzminski uses a “straw tiger” approach in his column last week, “When It Matters, Citizens Respond” – misstate the opponent’s premise, then attack the misstatement.

He felt my earlier letter underestimated the power of the people opposed to gas development.

I don’t underestimate that power.

My earlier LTE acknowledges the mobilization, Kuzminski’s leadership, the community divide, and the outside forces in Otsego County’s Gas Wars. Where we differ is Mr. Kuzminski sees Big O&G as the sole outside force. I suggested a few more. Gas companies left the state early in the game; the other outside forces remained: the Governor, the courts and billionaire family foundations that provided the money, strategy, and overall organization for the opposition.

The Governor’s prolonged moratorium and long-term suppression of DEC regulations effectively killed any gas-development enthusiasm.

Gas companies fled. Landowners grew dispirited. Cuomo’s DEC leadership appointments further eroded confidence.

Finally, after his December 2015 fracking ban, he shut down pipeline

construction, increasing the price of energy Upstate and throughout New England. We now have Russian supertankers off-loading LNG gas in Boston while a cheaper, abundant supply is available only 400 miles away. Mr. Kuzminski, tell me the Governor wasn’t (and isn’t) a factor.

The courts were a second factor in the Gas Wars. The Middlefield case hinged on legislative intent of the Oil, Gas & Mining Law. Did the legislation give the state jurisdiction on where gas wells could be placed or did that that right remain with the local governments?

Here’s the backstory: In 1986, the New York legislature struck a deal, exchanging local government’s “home rule” zoning rights for the state’s right to collect revenues. It was a straight swap – loss of local zoning for local collection of revenues. The rule was in place for about 30 years. No problems. Surely this extensive operational time should have been enough to determine legislative intent. It wasn’t.

Case law concerning gravel pits covered under a separate section of the overall law was used as precedent for oil and gas drilling.

Since there was no case law for oil and gas – remember, no problems – a gravel-pit case law trumped 30

years of operational experience.

Thus oil and gas plays were deemed equivalent to gravel pits. This judicial finding complicates everything, adds costs, delays and discourages gas development. From watching the trials, the outcome was predetermined. Justice wasn’t blind.

Finally, the Fear Factor. . . and the Fear Machine. Mr. Kuzminski notes the real and palpable fears of the community. Over the last decade these fears have been stoked by the Fear Machine that runs on foundation money and personnel. The Park Foundation that Mr. Kuzminski mentions in his column is illustrative. Centered in Ithaca, the Park Foundation funds a circle of academics, media outlets, and activist groups/individuals to create fearoriented anti-fracking research and articles that are fed to environmental media which, in turn, disseminates them to activists and a broad environmental audience. The result is a propaganda perpetual motion machine that makes enough noise to break into the mainstream media as legitimate news.

The academics and media outlets are self-referent, quoting one another, peer reviewing each others’ work, and presenting themselves to the mainstream media and press as unbiased scientists and reporters.

Foam-Rubber Strips Would Cushion Doors’ Closing To the Editor: The newly restored front doors to the Cooperstown Village Hall with their brass hardware are terrific to look at and are a great improvement.

However, the clamorous racket that results from closing the door carries all the way from the library into the gallery room at the north end of the building, with the library getting the worst of the noise. This is avoidable and needs to be addressed. The installation of foam-rubber cushion strips or pads with adhesive backing would eliminate

the problem.

In the past two months, I have hand-delivered two separate letters regarding this problem to the village office. These letters were addressed to the Building Committee and were never acknowledged.

It is a shame to have such beautiful architectural features overshadowed by this avoidable racket. It is my hope that this issue will be addressed by the village, perhaps using the suggestion previously mentioned.

Cooperstown Candidate Stakes Out Territory As Woman In Race COLLIER/From A1 “Women make up 50 percent of the population, and the fact that there is no other female democratic candidate is absurd,” she said in an interview. “Less than 20 percent of Congress is made up of women, and I felt strongly that there needed to be a voice for women.”

“As the only female, she’s going to offer something else,” said Rich Sternberg, Cooperstown, the Democratic organizer. “Sue Sullivan had been in, but she dropped out.”

Collier, a 2002 Cooperstown Central graduate, has family roots dating back to just after the Revolutionary War, when Isaac Collier founded Colliersville. “My family has been here for eight generations,” she said. “And we’re the

fifth generation of farmers.”

“Farming is a full-time job,” she said. “But, as so many farmers in the district know, it’s tough to make ends meet, so my dad worked in the chem lab at Bassett and my mom waitressed at The Otesaga. That’s the work ethic I grew up on.”

She waitressed alongside her to pay her way through Cornell, where she majored in Developmental Sociology and graduated in 2007. She also has a masters’ in Food and Resource Economics from Michigan State.

Collier became an agricultural economist with USAID during the Obama Administration, assessing

food security throughout the world to help determine aid packages.

Though she had been commuting between Washington D.C. and Cooperstown, she fully transitioned back her hometown in the last year.

Though rumors of her run had been circulating since the beginning of the year, she hesitated to announce her candidacy. “It’s hard to run for office if you’re not wealthy or privileged, and that’s a big problem in our system,” she said. “This is a barrier for the working class to get a seat at the table, and that made me fight even harder.”

She reached out to people throughout the district to gauge support, and was surprised by what she heard back. “I was overwhelmed,” she said. “People I

knew, people I hadn’t heard from in a long time, people I didn’t know, they all said they would support me,” she said. “It was the final push I needed.”

Her campaign platform is strong on women’s issues, including closing the gender wage gap and protecting reproductive rights. She is also a proponent of a $15 minimum wage, “common sense” gun laws and fix access to affordable healthcare.

“I couldn’t accept Faso voting on anti-women legislation and to take away healthcare in my own hometown,” she said.

An accomplished triathlete, she hasn’t left her racing days behind.

“I was on the Clark Sports Center Sharks swim team with Sarah True,” she said. “I’m known for being an intense racer, and I put

my all into everything I take on.”

Sternberg said he is in the process of inviting her to one of the Sunday afternoon sessions he’s been organizing for candidates at Cooperstown Village Hall. (At 12:30 p.m. this Sunday, the 18th, Jeff Beals, a former State Department staffer living in Woodstock, is appearing.)

In a June 26 Democratic primary, she will face Beals and five other Democrats – attorneys David Clegg and Antonio Delgado, investor Brian Flynn, former Cuomo aide Gareth Rhodes and tech entrepreneur Pat Ryan.

But in between campaign stops, there’s still work to be done in Cooperstown. “I still help my parents on the farm,” she said. “I was shoveling snow out of the barnyard over the weekend.”

Walters, whose husband – also a Jeff – is a Lutheran minister, is currently on a world tour performing, “500th Birthday Party: A Musical Celebration of the Reformation,” marking Martin Luther’s posting of his revolutionary 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Cathedral in 1517.

Inspired by First UM, Walters offered to perform the concert at the church as a fundraiser for the windows, 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 6.

“It was her idea,” said Gardner. “She was in Europe in January, and our church has a very European feel to it. I think that’s why she was drawn to it.”

The piano concert will feature Bach’s “Chaconne in D Minor,” and Franz Liszt’s “Hymn of Morning” and “Crusader’s March From The Legend of St. Elizabeth.” Several Liszt chorales will follow intermission.

Tickets are required for the show, and limited to 400; goodwill donations will be accepted for the Window Restoration Fund. “It’s her way of giving back,” said Gardner. “She wants to give concerts that are affordable to people.”

The funds raised will go specifically to “The Calling of St. Matthew.”

“We have 26 stained glass windows total,” said Gardner. “We only have four left to restore, but they can cost as much as $40,000 to repair.

“The glass is starting to bow and the lead is beginning to split. We have to do it before we lose the faces, because once you lose those, it gets much harder to restore.”

There are also plans to put together a booklet about the windows ahead of the concert, to hand out to attendees. A meet and greet with Walters after the concert, and her albums will be for sale.

“We are a very arts- and music-oriented church.

We’re always looking to do concerts,” said Gardner.

“She just walked in and made our jobs easier.”

“She’s phenomenal. It was serendipity that she

happened to come in.”

Walters earned her doctorate from Peabody Conservatory and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, among other venues. According to her website, she is the first American pianist invited to present three anniversary

concerts in honor of Liszt’s birthday and is widely considered to be one of the foremost interpreters of his music.

“This program is very inclusive,” she said. “The chorales have roots in the Psalms, in the Jewish and the Roman Catholic faiths.

The Reformation really opened the doors to greater religious freedom. It’s an important date to remember.”

“It’s not necessarily weather-dependent but more daylight-dependent,” she said. Like the skunks and groundhogs, birds will return to the area once the ground begins to thaw.

“A lot of times, the spring migration coincides with the available food resources.”

Regardless, migratory

birds are already becoming evident in Otsego County. “In general, within the last couple of weeks we have started to see the return of migratory songbirds,” she said.

Most people may equate spring and robins. “The bird that has always been an indicator for the beginning of spring for me is the red-winged blackbird,” said O’Handley.

Otsego County Land Trust Executive Director Pat Szarpa, says to not only look, but also listen. The Otsego Land Trust executive director who describes herself as a hobby ornitholo-

“You’ll start to see more birds in your backyard,” she said. “But even more so, you’re going to start to hear more songbirds singing.

ONEONTA – Vernard Carl Eichler, 77, who was active with the 6th Ward Athletic Club, died Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the A.O. Fox Hospital.

He was born July 30, 1940 in Oneonta the son of the late Elmer and Iva (Montgomery) Eichler.

For many years, Vernard worked construction for the Laborers Union Local #17.

But for the last 14 years he was the maintenance man at the 6th Ward Athletic Club.

In 1963, Vernard married Patricia Ann Harrington in Montrose, PA. Together they shared 54 years of marriage. He enjoyed hunting and fishing until his health didn’t allow him to anymore. He was a member of the 6th Ward Athletic Club.

Vernard is survived by his loving wife, Pat Eichler of Oneonta; two daughters, Laura Laub and Michele Kelly both of Chittenango; granddaughter, Amanda Lynn Eichler and her mother, Kristen Larsen; one grandson, Wesley Davy; two sisters, Agnes Lindsley and Ruth Grant; three

She was born on June 27, 1948, in San Francisco, California, a daughter of the late Lee and Marie (Meier) Lawrence.

Colleen is survived by her children, William Warren II, Brandy Jarnagin, Sherry Skinner, and Alice Warren; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her brothers, Alan, Mark and Lee Lawrence.

She was predeceased by her husband, James L. Hammond, in 2008.

A funeral was held Monday, March 12 at the Unatego Community Church,with the Rev. Brian Cutting officiating.

Colleen will be laid to rest next to her husband, James, in Otego Evergreen Cemetery later in the spring.

ONEONTA – Donald R. Stiefel, 92, a former D&H Gang leader, passed away March 6, 2018 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown after a brief illness.

He was born Dec. 27, 1925 in Oneonta, the son of Frederick and Mabel (Moon) Stiefel.

Don was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1944 to 1946 in the Merchant Marines Convoy duty.

He married Margaret “Peg” Jordan on Sept. 19, 1946 at the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

Don was employed for 44 years at the D&H Railroad, Oneonta, retiring as Gang leader.

OTEGO - Judith F. Judkins, 75, who waitressed at the Duke and ran the restaurant at the Empire Livestock Auctions, passed away March 1, 2018, at Albany Medical Center, following a brief illness.

Judi was born July 3, 1942, in Laurens, the daughter of Roger D. and Anice (Johnson) Faye.

She graduated from Oneonta High School and attended SUNY Oneonta.

She was married to Frederick Judkins in 1962. They divorced in the early 90s.

Kotanchyan is one of two dozen international students that make up half of two Division I teams, soccer as well as water polo. As a sophomore attacker, she has netted 58 goals and 30 assists so far this season, second overall.

After the college’s Feb. 28 announcement, Moscow native Kotanchyan and 47 other D-I athletes are deciding whether to stay at Hartwick or transfer to another D-I program.

“Both my father and my grandfather are water-polo coaches, and I was kind of exposed to the sport since my early childhood,” she said. She jumped in the pool at 6, and was playing water polo by 8. “I grew up, and water polo became my lifestyle. I’m an absolute team player, but at the same time, I’m a very competitive person.

“I found that in water polo, you can combine both of these characteristics.”

When it became time for college, Hartwick recruited her. “My parents wanted me to get a good education, and they looked at the United States,” she said. “As it usually does, it came down to money – and Hartwick offered me a full ride.”

Graduating in Russia with a class of 30, Kotanchyan knew she wanted to go to a small school, and Hartwick’s larger group of international students helped make the transition easier for her.

international players, so I felt more comfortable being around people from other countries,” said Kotanchyan.

In fact, Kotanchyan was on her way to a 12:45 p.m. team meeting when she received the email from President Dr. Margaret Drugovich. “Most of the team figured out that we were downsizing before we actually had a meeting,” said the athlete.

Hartwick has in fact struggled in the past with its Division I programs, proposing to demote both to D-III in 2004 and 2008 under late president Dick Miller.

When asked if she believed the water polo team could be saved, Kotanchyan seemed optimistic. “I actually think we can save it,” said

Kotanchyan. “People are supporting us and the president didn’t expect such a resistance.”

Being that water polo has been such an integral part of her life, Kotanchyan isn’t ready to retire from the sport just yet. “I was just officially released today,” said Kotanchyan. “That means that other D-I coaches can reach out and talk to me now, and I think I might do that.”

But Kotanchyan still believes that there is hope for Hartwick’s D-I programs. “I’m not quite ready to give up just yet,” she said. “Something like this happened 14 years ago where they said they would give up water polo, but at the end of the season they said they would return the program.”
