he Dark Horse fire,” Oneonta’s retiring fire chief, Pat Pidgeon, immediately responded when asked about the worst blaze he

tackled in 36 years with the OFD. Pidgeon was strapped into the jump seat of the fire engine as it arrived around 5 a.m. March, 1, 1992, at 18 Market St. “There was an explosion,” he said. He looked over his shoulder.

“A beam blew out, and landed on a line of cars. I knew it was going to be a long night.”

Focused on finishing her doctorate, Sarah Spross, an assistant commissioner in Maryland’s Department of Education, drove up last summer and closeted herself at Cooperstown’s Landmark Inn.

On Aug. 28, she turned on the TV and saw the news: Bill Crankshaw, Cooperstown Central School superintendent since 2016, had resigned to return to his hometown and the Greater Johnstown School District.

It clicked, and Monday, March 1, Spross was seated at Crankshaw’s former conference table at Cooperstown Central School, being interviewed on her first day as CCS superintendent.

POLICE REFORMS ON CENTER STAGE AT COUNTY BOARD

he county Board of Representatives planned a forum at 10 a.m. Wednesday on its review of policies in procedures in the county Sheriff’s Department.

Ordered by Governor Cuomo after George Floyd’s death, plans for all local police departments are due in Albany by April 1.

State Sen. Peter Oberacker, R-Schenevus, said he was contacted

by Rick Amo, All Star Village proprietor Marty Patton’s property manager, which prompted the senator to write a letter to Governor Cuomo, noting that, since high school sports are starting up again, why not youth baseball camps.

“As you are aware, 2020 was disastrous for the tourism sector,” wrote Oberacker in a letter sent Feb. 8. He had received no reply as of this week.

Governor Cuomo did say Wednesday, Feb. 17, that he has given preliminary approval for summer camps, including day camps and sleepover camps. Final guidance will be forthcoming on how the camps can open.

“I asked if baseball camps are included, and they said yes,” said county board Chairman David Bliss, who participates in the Mohawk Valley Regional “control room,” the official conduit of COVID information from Albany.

But Cuomo said camps would not be allowed to open until June at the earliest, which would interfere with Dreams Park’s plans.

As he understands it, Bliss said, the baseball camps will have to present detailed plans to the county Health Department and Public Health Director Heidi Bond. As of Tuesday, he didn’t know if that has been done.

Another wrinkle is the state’s quarantine regulations: Travelers must be tested for COVID three days before arriving in New York State. On arrival, they must quarantine for three days. Then, they must obtain another COVID test and wait until the results are back before they

can get out of quarantine.

“Parents are reaching out, trying to find ways to get around testing requirements,” which would require them to take an extra week’s vacation as part their trip, said Cassandra Harrington, director of Destination Marketing of Otsego County.

Meanwhile, restaurants and lodging that depend on the youthbaseball camps are accepting reservations, with the understanding they may have to return their deposits.

The desk manager at Holiday Inn Express, who identified himself only as Gregory R, said the Hartwick Seminary hotel is almost fully booked. However, the company accepts cancellations up to 48 hours before check-in, so what happens remains to be seen.

“Providing that people follow the rules put forward, and are tested before getting here, the feedback I’m getting from visitors who are

booking with us is that they’re still excited,” said Sal Furnari, proprietor of Maskot’s Pizza & Grill, across Route 28 from the Dreams Park entrance.

But patrons are asking, “if the park cancelled the day before we get there, will we get our refund?”

At Cooperstown Stays, the foremost rental agent for Dreams Park families, proprietor Lunetta Swartout said, “because final payments were due March 1, some teams elected to back out, and get into tournaments in other parts of the country.”

It’s a shame, she said, because Dreams Park is considered the gold standard “by everybody,” she said.

“Coaches have told me, Cooperstown is the pinnacle of youth baseball.

Why is that? Because they run a top-notch tournament. An immaculate, clean facility. And they provide a total experience for teams and families alike.”

Oneonta’s Pat Pidgeon Had A Dream: Fire Chief – And He Achieved It

“I remember the blue flames from all the alcohol that was burning,” he recalled.

At one point, as the fire appeared very close to a neighboring apartment house, he and Russo hammered on the doors of apartments in the building, awakening college coeds and protecting them with their shields as the girls hurried to safety.

That building was saved and is still student housing today.

He learned a lot that day: One, he drove a Bobcat for the first time; two, he participated in his first investigation; three, he applied boyhood lessons of hard work.

“When you’ve got work to do, you’ve got work to do,” he said.

“That’s how we were raised.”

Finally leaving the scene at 6 p.m., 12 hours after he arrived, “I was covered in a sheet of ice,” he said. “I walked into the firehouse, walked upstairs and got in a hot shower to take off my coat.” The clips had been frozen solid.

As the ninth member of the Pidgeon clan to join the fire department, his future career was always part of his life.

Pat Pidgeon and long-time friend Judy Sweet are enjoying their retirement.

Hodge’s Pond in Neahwa Park on Feb. 12, 1974, when a D&H train derailed at Emmons and one of the tankers exploded. “I could see it glowing in the sky,” he said.

He called his mother, Marlene, on a pay phone, and she told him to hurry home to Monroe Avenue, near Center Street School, a Pidgeon family enclave. His dad and two uncles has been on the scene when the tanker exploded.

Uncle Ronnie had his rubber coat melted into his back. His father and his Uncle Joe were in the hospital, treated for injuries and released that night.

Ron and Joe and cousin Jeff were OFD captains – the department is divided into four crews, each with a captain – and his dad Charles, Uncle Herbie were captains in the call fire department, where Herb’s son Brett also served. The chief’s brother Michael served in the call department, as did cousin Ronnie Emmett.

Other Pidgeons were active in the Boy Scouts’ Explorer post, an OFD affiliate.

But the chief, whose last day on the job was Feb. 12 – he’s eligible for vacation pay and other time through the end of March – has fond memories, too.

He remembers the department’s summer clambake, when Uncle Ronnie would drive to New York City’s docks in the wee hours and bring back 8-10 burlap bags with 1,000 clams each. He would join the boys scrubbing clams in a tilted trough, the youngest at the bottom end.

Pidgeon graduated from OHS in 1982, and drove for North American Van Lines and Schuman’s until March 21, 1985, when he joined the OFD’s call department.

Along with Frank Russo, the chief’s son (now Family Y director), he entered the professional OFB in 1988.

In 1992, he was one of the department’s first “critical care technicians.” Now, all firemen go through multi-stepped training, from first responder to paramedic, the peak.

As to why he retired now, at age 55, Pidgeon said “I hated politics,” and it wore him down.

He was particularly disheartened when Common Council defunded his assistant chief’s position a few months ago.

Now, he plans to “enjoy life” with his long-time significant other, Judy Sweet. But his legacy is secure.

His eldest son, Ryan, 30, is a firefighter with the National Institutes of Health in Maryland, and a volunteer firefighter with the Hyattsville department.

Son Matthew, 28, lives in Unadilla and, as did his dad, drives trucks for Schuman’s.

To mark their father’s retirement, they presented him with a flag flown aboard Marine One on Sept. 30 over Washington D.C., “in honor of Fire Chief Patrick W. Pidgeon for his 36 years of faithful and honorable service to the Oneonta Fire Department.”

Most important to his chief, he accomplished his foremost goal: “To make sure the men went home to their families at the end of the day.”

Staffing is pretty much the same then as now, although calls have increased from 1,200 a year in 1988 to 3,600 today.

From the beginning, he said in an interview, he intended to be chief. “I thought I could do it,” he said, and soaked in all the training offered and studying for the Civil Service tests that would take him there.

In the fall of 2003, he made captain, earning a slot in FLIP school, the First Line Officer Program at Fort Totten, Queens, with 57 other officers, 20 from Upstate.

The numbers “4 and 2” stuck with him. In New York City, four engines and two trucks respond to every call. In Oneonta, “4 and 2” means “four firefighters on one engine and two on one truck,” he related.

“We do with six guys that it took 100 guys to do there,” he said.

At the end of 2009, Chief Robert Barnes retired, and Captain Pidgeon achieved his life’s goal on Jan. 1, 2010.

Over his career, the biggest change in the OFD’s role is the development of EMT squad: “75 percent of what we do now is ambulance and EMS. Everybody has to be dual-roled, cross-trained.”

Vaccines Are Here. Keep Trying. You’ll Get Your Shots

lsewhere on this page, Dr. Charles Hyman, Bassett Hospital’s infectious disease specialist, says, “It’s time for hope.”

Yes, indeed, all the signs are good.

Earlier this week, Heidi Bond, Otsego County public health director, said, “I think it will open up pretty quickly with Johnson & Johnson,” a reference to the new one-shot vaccine approved over the weekend.

It’s even encouraging to read the daily reports in the doom-andgloom national newspapers.

Monday, March 1, the Washington Post told us the seven-day average of “cases reported” dropped from 248,128 to 68,040.

As of that day, WAPO said 50 million Americans had been vaccinated, about the same number of us over 65.

Now, that’s progress.

After the state website kept complaining the whole State of

New York had only been receiving 400,000 vaccines a week for its 16 million eligible citizens, Monday, March 1, it posted: “New York is expected to receive approximately 164,800 doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine this week, pending final FDA authorization.”

That, plus 400,000 a week we’re already getting: It would still take 80 weeks to serve New York’s eligible citizens, but it’s accelerating.

• The good news is if New York

State gets the vaccine, New York State can administer it.

Someone who experienced the Bassett vaccine clinic at the Clark Sports Center, then the one at SUNY Polytechnic in Utica reports both were efficient and, considering, relatively pleasant.

At both, those receiving vaccines filled out the questionnaires we’ve become familiar with, registered, got the shot, sat for 15 minutes in case of a negative reaction, and were out the door in no time.

Everyone was pleasant, even cheerful.

The Utica site – the school’s Wildcat Field House – was roomier, of course. It was staffed by a National Guard unit from Harlem, deployed there until September. (The snow will melt in May, one private was assured.)

And the interactions were pleasant and professional.

istorically, as in all our inland lakes after the original European settlement, rowboats, canoes, and sailboats capable of carrying a few passengers dominated Otsego Lake.

Early on it provided a corridor between the waters of the Mohawk drainage and the Southern Atlantic states via the Susquehanna River and was of national importance. It was used for a diversity of commercial and military activities over that

the lake since they were constructed along the ridgetops to avoid the necessity of building bridges over the many streams running to the lake.

During that period, the lake itself served for commercial as well as recreational transportation. The first steamboat was launched in 1858.

The last commercial steam vessel plied the lake in 1933. During the height of those activities in 1894, 10 steam-powered vessels were active on the lake. At least two, the “Natty Bumppo” and the “Cyclone,” could carry more than 300 passengers.

The fact that we now have two incredibly effective COVID vaccines approved by the FDA (with more on the way) is amazing and heartening to me. Those responsible for that speedy development with such fantastic efficacy deserve high praise, and our thanks.

Let’s talk about what comes next.

• Understanding the Shot The remarkable speed of development of these COVID vaccines makes some of us understandably wary and concerned as to whether corners were cut.

I believe the answer to this is: “No.”

Researchers sped up their trials by using existing clinical trial networks. Drug companies assumed a financial risk by beginning manufacturing while the trials were takCHARLES ing place. And the HYMAN FDA and CDC let the vaccines cut in line, setting aside other reviews and approvals.

In that way, labs, businesses, and government agencies accelerated the

process without sacrificing safety protocols.

The development speed is also due to the technology. mRNA vaccines (short for messenger RNA) can be produced faster than traditional vaccines.

This begs the question: Is this new technology safe?

Although these are the first mRNA vaccines approved by the FDA, mRNA technology has been used for decades, and this type of vaccine has been in development for years. This is really an expanded application of established techniques.

Oneonta & Vicinity – General Manager C.S. Sims of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, said today that the purpose of removal of the headquarters of the Susquehanna Division, now located at the Delaware & Hudson building at Steuben and Pearl streets in Albany, to Oneonta, is to bring the superintendent of the division and his men in closer touch with the work. It will necessitate the relocation of about 15 men, including the superintendent, J.C. Rosenstalk, who recently succeeded F.H. Wait, along with several clerks, train dispatchers and time keepers.

The Susquehanna Division is devoted mostly to the freight business. Between 35 and 40 trains pass over the road each way every day, including the freight trains from the coal fields and those carrying merchandise, which connect with the Boston & Maine railroad at Mechanicville for New England. Most of the freight trains are made up at the freight yards in Oneonta.

About 15 members of the Otsego County Medical Society attended a lecture at the Elks’ Club restaurant on Tuesday evening. Dr. R.R. Moloten of New York City spoke on “The Classification of Goiter.”

Fifteen air raid wardens have been assigned to the West End and West Oneonta, Frank McCook, civil defense director for the Town of Oneonta said last night.

They will meet at 8 p.m. tonight at the Oneonta Plains School to get acquainted with their air raid duties. The duties of an air raid warden include getting acquainted with the neighborhood, learning the names of all people in his block and getting to know their working habits. The last is important because it will be up to the wardens to take care of a family whose breadwinner is working in the daytime, or at night, in case of attack. The newly appointed wardens are Gerald Hazlett, Carl Disbrow, Clarence Bull, Willard E. Martin, Charles A. Nichols, Fred Truesdale, Richard K. Rose, Ray Peaster, Marion Bougard, Ralph Wheeler, Richard Cohen, Otto Schrull, E.V. Henry, Ralph Allen, and Harry Ford.

More than 3,000 nurses from across New York State thronged the New York State Capitol complex in Albany on Tuesday to demand legislative recognition for their profession. Attending the gathering were registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing students, all intent on lobbying for a bill that would define nursing as “diagnosing and treating human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling, and

provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being.

With shouts of “We want Rocky” and “Pass our bill,” the nurses rallied at the front of the Capitol to listen to speeches. With waving banners, they rushed into the building and up a flight of stairs to the doors where they believed Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller’s office was located. Finding those doors locked, they filtered into other entrances, buttonholing every available legislator to promote the legislation that would add nursing to the ranks of professional vocations in the state’s labor force.

The LaLeche League is international in scope, and counts more than 4,500 groups in the U.S., Canada and 45 other countries.

All women and nursing babies are welcome. The March 11 topic will be the advantages of breastfeeding to mother and baby. The April 8 topic will be the art of breastfeeding and overcoming difficulties.

HARMAN: Concerns About Boating Unchanged BOATS/From A4 conducting summer censuses of boats on the water, as well as those placed for immediate access and including those involved in rental operations.

Between that time and 2019, the total numbers of boats increased gradually from 864 to 1,366 with the biggest increase from 1991 to 2000 due to a rapid increase in canoes, followed by kayaks and most recently, paddleboards.

Personal Watercraft (PWCs), Jet Skis and their like, appeared on the scene during that same time. This assessment does not consider boats launched for day use at public or private launches, which have the potential to increase traffic on the water.

Since 1975, sailboats on the lake have undergone a gradual decrease.

Early on, the larger day cruisers and recognized classes of larger racing boats were most abundant.

The loss of the Star fleet of keelboats at the Cooperstown Country Club and the popularity of boats designed for one individual (Sunfish, Lasers, etc.) changed the character of sailing on Otsego despite activities at the Cooperstown Sailing Club that continue to this day, and the popularity of wind surfing between 1991 and 2010. The latter have been recently replaced by paddleboards.

There has been a slight but steady decrease over time of powerboats, despite an increase in pontoon boats powered by outboard engines since 2000. Changes from low horsepower outboards, primarily smaller fishing boats in part due to the loss of large commercial rental establishments (Thayer’s Livery with over 200 boats, for example) to larger watercraft brought changes to the character of power boating on Otsego, as did the loss of classic inboard runabouts and large cruisers which have now been re-

placed by inboard/outboard runabouts.

PWCs, which were not documented before 1991, have moved from standup to sit-down models that have become quieter, somewhat larger and are now less of a concern than when they were when first introduced. Larger jet boats were not documented on Otsego before 2011-19.

Changes in recreational boating on Otsego Lake since 1975 have reflected increasing population densities and users that have become more affluent operating larger, higher-powered vessels. Many of those same individuals and their families also use small sailboats, kayaks and paddleboards.

These changes can be interpreted with the potential lake impacts in mind, as the types of watercraft in use have implications for the degree of shoreline disturbance experienced; various types of watercraft generate different stressors and impacts due to their mode of operation, size of wake generated, typical use patterns (single trips, slow speed, continuous operation, etc.).

Boats capable of generating larger wakes for water sports (e.g. wakeboarding) cause stronger wave action

on the shoreline than smaller boats; these boats also tend to operate continuously for longer periods of time.

Therefore, while the number of motorized boats may be a smaller percentage of the total boats, the impact that they have in terms of shoreline disturbance may well be greater than the typical motorized craft of previous decades.

Non-motorized craft are not associated with shoreline disturbance in this way, though there are risks of conflicts with motorized traffic and safety concerns during high traffic periods.

The above statements are validated by intensive studies in 1993 by France and Albright that showed a correlation between the intensity of cruising boats traveling within 500 feet of the shoreline, phosphorus concentrations and turbidity in the water column.

High amounts of sediment turnover and deposition attest to more serious impacts in areas protected from the prevailing winds (France and Albright) These data provided much of the information that led to the development of Otsego Lake’s 200-foot no-wake zone along the shorelines.

The website claims to have 50,000 members with tens of thousands of daily visitors. Website members are referred to as “freepers” and they are calling for demonstrations against Senator Clinton as the “evil one.” A doctored photo of Senator Clinton in a Nazi uniform appears on the site with the name “Hitlery.” Postings on the site also attack Representative Boehlert for his plans to appear with Clinton at the Telecenter Building on Main Street at 11:45 a.m.

Candidates, Candidates Everywhere

CAMPAIGNS/From A1 The early entries, a half-year in advance of the elections, are required by changes implemented in January 2019 by Governor Cuomo and the state Legislature, then newly in control of the Democrats.

State and local primaries were moved from the second Tuesday in September to the fourth Tuesday in June, to align with federal elections.

The idea, Democrats said, was to save money and to increase turnout for local elections.

However, with petitions in local races due to be filed with the county Board of Elections between March 22 and 25, it also extends the campaign season for local offices from four to six months.

In the past few days, Democratic Common Council member Mark Drnek, and two Republicans, Council member Len Carson and Craig Gelbsman, all announced they’re running for mayor.

Both Carson and

Gelbsman are former county board members. The Republican City Committee endorsed Carson on Sunday, Feb. 28, and Gelbsman hasn’t yet said whether he will continue or not.

All three own local businesses: Drnek, Sweet Home Productions, an internet marketing firm; Carson, DC Marketing, which owns the electronic billboards on I-88; and Gelbsman, First Choice Cleaners and Rage Production, a regional concert organizer.

A similar outpouring – with more to come – is happening in races for the Otsego County Board of Representatives.

• In District 5, Hartwick, Milford and New Lisbon, Emily Popek, former Daily Star managing editor who does public relations for Capital District BOCES, announced on her Facebook page that she will challenge the board’s vice chair, Meg Kennedy, the board’s sole Conservative Party member.

• In District 7, part of Cooperstown, plus the towns

of Middlefield, Roseboom and Cherry Valley, Democrat Charlie Varney, a Cooperstown barber, said he will challenge the county board chairman, Dave Bliss.

• In District 10, Oneonta Wards 7-8, the Democratic incumbent, Clark Oliver, the county Democratic chairman, announced he will run for a second term.

On the Republican side, county Rep. Dan Wilber, Burlington, who is leading the effort to find candidates this year, announced that all six Republican incumbents have agreed to run again.

He said he intends to run candidates in the seven Democratic districts, including four in Oneonta, which usually goes Democratic but have supported three Republicans in recent years.

Wilber’s Democratic counterpart, Leslie Berliant of Middlefield, who Oliver said is recruiting her party’s candidates in county board races, did not return a telephone message.

Kismet Brings Superintendent To CCS SPROSS/From A1 “I wanted to return to country living,” said the new superintendent, who has lived in Baltimore for decades, but was raised in Millbrook and summered in the Goodyear Lake vicinity, “and to be impactful in a school district.”

She has an offer on a home in Cooperstown for herself and her 11-year-old son, and that morning had just completed a meeting with her leadership team.

Moving 1,200 miles north from a city of 609,000 people to a community of 1,900 isn’t the only adjustment she’s facing.

In Maryland, the Education Department only 24 school district, ranging from 8,000 to 150,000 students. In New York State there are 288 school districts, many Upstate ones, like Cooperstown Central ֪– at 800 students, it’s among the largest in Otsego County.

Spross brings 25 years’ experience in special education, lead teacher and administrator in Florida and New Jersey, joining the Maryland education department 16 years ago.

She received her bachelor’s from Goucher College

in Towson, Md., and her master’s from Towson State College.

While she was reluctant, on her first day, to get into her plans for her new job or the school board’s expectations – it’s simply too soon, she said – she spoke of her proudest achievements to date.

One, in charge of the Division of Educator Certification & Program Approval, she streamlined how teachers were certified to teach in that state.

The process had been taking 1-2 years. When she left, “the oldest case was eight days old.” Typically, a certified teacher can now obtain Maryland certification in 1-2 weeks.

Two, in Florida, she worked with the Seminoles to ensure students from the tribe were best placed to benefit most from the programs.

And three, she was able to elevate graduation rates of special-ed students in Maryland.

One of the first challenges Spross and the school board face is how to introduce her to the community in time of COVID-19. “How do I meet the community?” she asked. “How do I meet the community leaders?”

She was planning a Zoom meeting with faculty, and more will be forthcoming as the outreach is worked out.

HYMAN: After Dark Year, Hope

Although COVID-19 was a novel strain, we are working from a base knowledge of how that family of viruses operate.

• Getting the Shot All of us wish the vaccine were available for all tomorrow. But the reality is that demand far outstrips current supply.

Producing hundreds of millions if not billions of doses of vaccine is going to take time. So we need to be patient. Your turn will come, but it will take some time.

Vaccine distribution is determined by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), so delaying your own immunization does not help anyone else get theirs.

When your turn comes to get vaccinated against COVID, I strongly encourage you to get it. Every person vaccinated is a step toward forming herd immunity and getting back to normal.

• Side Effects Are Normal When you receive the vaccine, review the list of side effects provided by your vaccination center. Prepare yourself for the possibility that you might experience things like pain at the injection site, tiredness, aches or fever.

In other words, you might feel sick. But you need to remember that you’re not.

The vaccine teaches your immune system to recognize and protect your body from certain proteins found in the COVID virus.

Some people’s bodies produce symptoms

during that learning process. However, since mRNA vaccines do not include actual coronavirus, it is not possible to be infected by the injection.

Simply monitor yourself and contact your practitioner if necessary.

If you do experience side effects, you should still return for your second shot unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

• Masks and Social Distancing Are Still Important Researchers are still studying whether we can carry and spread the disease after vaccination. So until we know the answer to this question it will be important to continue wearing a mask and keeping 6 feet of space between yourself and others.

There are practical concerns as well. With no way of knowing who has and who hasn’t received the vaccine, our businesses and community spaces will still be administering COVID policies uniformly. We don’t want to stymie our economic and social recovery.

• Finishing Strong This pandemic has been a grueling marathon for all of us. 2020 is over and we want to put it behind us and get back to normal. I think the vaccines we have and will have are the road back to normality, and that is why I start this year with hope.

Right now, only about 8 percent of Americans are fully vaccinated against the disease. More than 90 percent of the population do not have full or in most cases any immunity.

In my opinion, only when 80-85 percent of the population has immunity, due to vaccination or having had COVID-19, will we have reached reasonable herd immunity.

While we have heard talk about 70 percent being adequate with measles, there are high risks unless we have 90-percent immunity. I don’t think COVID19 is significantly different.

Finally, decrease in acute death should not be the only outcome that we worry about. I have discussed the syndrome of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).

We are also beginning to learn about Long-Haulers Syndrome where people recover from the acute infection but have long term consequences of their neurovascular, cardiac, renal, and other systems.

Bottom line, get vaccinated as soon as possible, do not travel unnecessarily, maintain social distancing, wear your masks (doubled) correctly, and avoid people who won’t follow the rules.

Kendi Defined New Movement On 1st Anniversary Of C-19 In NYS,

“We were struck by his honesty. He didn’t budge.

He was honest, he told us straight up, ‘This is where I am, this is how fast I work.

You know, I find writing easy, and I will get it done in a year.’ Okay? And he did.”

A year later, Kendi had finished the dissertation that later became his first book, “The Black Campus Movement: Black Students and the Racial Reconstitution of Higher Education, 1965– 1972”. SUNY Oneonta was hiring for a permanent position in African-American history.

Kendi applied and no one was surprised that he was one of the finalists, said O’Mara.

They were surprised, however, by what happened during the interview process.

Each candidate, after a day of on-campus interviews, meets more informally with the search committee over dinner.

“We were meeting at Stella Luna. We’re sitting in the window, you know, at our table, the interview committee, faculty. And when I look out I see Ibram on the corner, across the street, and a cop car.

Right? So on his way to his job interview, he was stopped for walking while being black.” O’Mara was appalled, contacted the college’s then-President Nancy Kleniewski, and demanded she follow up with the police.

• A Teachable Moment The incident eventually led to public meetings between SUNY Oneonta students and faculty and the Oneonta Police Department, to discuss racial profiling.

Rather than being antagonistic, Kendi saw this as an opportunity, a teachable moment.

“He offered to meet with police officers to talk about racism. I think he had two sessions with police. I’m sure he learned something about Oneonta in those workshops … I think it also taught him a lot about how, you know, you hope for change. It’s going to be beyond glacial,” O’Mara said, In his first year at SUNY Oneonta, Kendi announced his career aspirations to colleagues. “He’s very honest. He said that what he hoped to do in life was become a public intellectual, which is different than succeeding as an academic, right?” said O’Mara.

“Kudos to Ibram. He had a game plan. He had a life plan, he had a career plan.

And part of that is to learn along the way. It’s not just that I’m passing through, it’s I’m here and I’m learning and I’m moving up.”

It appears he has succeeded. He left Oneonta in 2012, the same year his first book was published. He got married in 2013, and he his wife Sadiqa, a pediatrician, both changed their surname to Kendi, which means “loved one” in the Meru language of Kenya.

In 2016, Kendi’s book, “Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America,” won the National Book Award for Nonfiction.

His best-selling 2019 book, “How to Be an Antiracist,” is an interesting mix of memoir and call to arms. In it, he argues that discussions of how to end racism focus too often on individual racist acts such as hate speech, but overlook how racism is structurally embedded in all our policies and institutions.

They divided 400 years of history in five-year chunks, and recruited AfricanAmerican contributors to write about each period. The authors include academics, but also journalists, novelists and poets.

“Four Hundred Souls” is reminiscent of Howard Zinn’s 1980 classic, “A People’s History of the United States,” a radical retelling of American history from the perspective of the disempowered and oppressed. Zinn’s book was part of a movement that shifted the focus of popular history away from stories of wars and victors but has been criticized for a solitary radical perspective that failed to examine opposing viewpoints.

Kendi’s previous books have received similar criticisms.

Kendi and Blain’s new book differs from Zinn’s in an important way—its collaboration. “Black Americans can be defined as individuals of African descent in solidarity…the womb of community,” Kendi writes in the introduction.

• “I Have Not Lost Faith” With 90 authors, “collectively this choir sings the chords of survival, of struggle, of success, of death, of life, of joy, of racism, of antiracism, of creation, of destruction—of America’s clearest chords, year after year, of liberty, justice and democracy for all.”

Kendi helped create Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research last year. In a founder’s statement on the website, Kendi writes that he has “seen racism in all its ugliness in our time and across centuries. But… I have not lost faith in the beauty of human potential, and the possibilities of a world where life, health, equity, and justice are inalienable human rights.

ONEONTA – Nancy Garufi, 83, who founded Tino’s Pizza with her husband, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021, at Fox Nursing Home.

She was born on July 12, 1937, in Frazzano, Sicily, the daughter of Lorenzo and Rosalia Frisenda.

At 18 years old, Nancy came to the United States and settled in Cold Spring, Putnam County. Her first

job was at the dress factory there. She married Agatino “Tino” Garufi Sr. in August 1961. He predeceased her on June 27, 1998.

Moving to Otego in 1973, she and her husband became co-owners of Pizzaland with Tino’s sister, Frances, and her husband, Peter, until 1982.

In 1985, Nancy and Tino opened their own restaurant, Tino’s Pizza. She enjoyed making salads and knew all

She is survived by her two sons, Tino Garufi Jr. and his wife, Debbie and their two sons, Tino III and Joshua, and Vincent Garufi and his two daughters, Alissa and Cassondra and his companion, Jennifer Mannion (Alex and Carter); and her special nieces and nephews, Peter Puglisi (Patty) and their three Nancy Garufi children, Peter, Jessica and Michaela, and Sarah Lynch (Daniel) and their three children, Kevin, Patrick and Katie whom is also her goddaughter.

Nancy was predeceased by her brothers, John and Ubaldo.

Dear Dog Charmer: We are hoping that you might settle a family dispute. We have a 6-month-old pup who loves to play tug-of-war. Some books advise that tug-of-war is a good game for dogs to play, helping dogs burn energy and gain confidence; this is the side my husband takes. I’ve found that the more our puppy plays tug-ofwar, the more she tends to bite; she is very gentle, but uses her teeth more on us, which I find disagreeable, and which causes considerable stress when we have visitors with young children or who are less comfortable with dogs. Any advice?

Curious in Cooperstown Dear Curious in Coop, The easiest part of being a dog trainer, is training the dog.

The hardest part of being a dog trainer is what I call the “leash transfer”, getting the owners to

do what I tell them to do, to get their dog cooperating. Having had over 800 training appointments a year I quickly realized that in addition to training the dog and training the owners, a third skill was needed, that being the tactful expertise of a mediator.

The first line of the question above is asking me to settle TOM a family SHELBY dispute. I’ve lost count of all the “how to” quarrels and disagreements I stepped into the middle of when it came to parenting the dog. As for the tug-of-war dispute, you are all correct, or will be with a little bit of training.

With repetitive consistency

your dog (based on the picture I’ll call her Grif) can easily attain a large vocabulary. Tug-of-war is a great game, as long as you initiate, and control the game.

She needs to be taught, “drop it!”. (The “Drop It” command can save her life if she picks up gum with xylitol in it). Offer her the tug toy saying, “Grif, wanna play tug?” as you hold it out for her to grab. In your other hand is a treat, and after a bit of happy growling tug play put the treat under her nose as you say “drop it!”.

In the great majority of cases the treat will be more attractive than the toy and she’ll immediately drop the toy for the treat.

If she’s one of the rare, but intense tuggers, you may have to ratchet up the treat to a piece of people food.

As for her putting her teeth on you gently, teeth and flesh are a “no-no!” Have Grif drag 4 ft. of a flat leash with the handle cut

off (only under supervision and not in a crate). When she mouths you, puts her teeth on your hand, don’t pull your hand away, but rather grab the leash, and with a little pressure on it tell her “No teeth”, and release the leash with a smile and quick thank you praise the split second she takes her teeth off you.

At 6 months of age Grif is right in the heart of “punk age” experimenting with what she can get away with. As she matures and gets more cooperative, cut the drag leash shorter and shorter till it’s unnecessary. But don’t be in too much of a hurry. I remember a Doberman of about 9 months of age that saluted you with total obedience when he dragged the leash, and flipped you the bird when you took it off.
