Trooper Hurt In Fight Along Interstate 88 SCHENEVUS

t least one state trooper was injured in an altercation that took place near the Schenevus exit on I-88, according to Aga Dembinska, Troop C public relations.

According to Rob O’Brien, director, Otsego County 911, a passerby called 911 to report what appeared to be two subjects fighting along the side of the highway. State Police were dispatched to the scene and it was believed that the trooper was injured at the scene.

Jasmine, who gave birth to a litter of puppies at the Susquehanna SPCA last week, has found a foster home with Jeni Metch and her family. Sons Colton and Wyatt named the puppies – three boys, Cocoa, (pictured) Reese and Ruger, and girl, Ruby. Though Jasmine gave birth to six puppies last Tuesday, two of them died at just a few days old, according to Stacie Haynes, SSPCA executive director, but the four surviving are healthy.

INTERVIEW WITH DR. GERALD BENJAMIN

WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH UPSTATE? I t all began with a technological breakthrough – in Syracuse. Air conditioning.

Its development by General Electric in that central New York city opened the way for the industrial development of the South and Southwest, and the decline of the Mohawk Valley, which post-WWII was the most powerful and prosperous manufacturing corridor in the history of the world.

“We invented a technology that allowed industry to shift internally,” particularly in textiles, an irony noted

by Gerry Benjamin, director of New Paltz’s Benjamin Center, formerly the Center for Local Government.

He’s perhaps the wisest and

most insightful observer of New York State government and politics, drawing on more than a half-century of involvement.

He was posed the question, What’s the matter with New York? Coincidentally, that very morning Amazon announced it was abandoning building its HQ2 in Long Island City, on the shores of the East River across from Manhattan, and taking 27,000 jobs, most in the $100,000 range and up, somewhere else.

Benjamin was rueful: “25 to 40,000 jobs are being declined downstate – while Upstate has no work. It’s a contextual fact.”

“Nelson Rockefeller launched very ambitious government programs.

The assumption was you couldn’t damage the New York economy,” said Benjamin. “Over a long period of time, it weakened the whole New York economic system.”

Even then – the 1970s – international competition was eroding Upstate’s advantages, with more dependable and efficient Japanese cars delivering body blow after body blow to the Big Three – GM, Ford and Chrysler. Upstate, it delivered a “double whammy,” staggering automotive plants in Buffalo and Tarrytown that had regional impact.

“We got into a destructive cycle,” he said. “We didn’t have the jobs. So people moved away. So there’s less available workforce.

There’s a hollowing out and an aging of a population.”

• Still, “we’ve partially adapted,” said Benjamin, through places like Springbrook, where in December 2017 he spoke on the topic, “County Manager Vs. County Executive,” to the Otsego County Board of Representatives and other community leaders.

Bringing Amazon to New York diversified our economy away from real estate and Wall Street, further cementing our status as an emerging center for tech and was an extraordinary economic win not just for Queens and New York City, but for the entire region, from Long Island to Albany’s nanotech center.

However, a small group of politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community – which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported

The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.

The fundamentals of New York’s business climate and community that attracted Amazon to be here – our talent pool, world-class education system, commitment to diversity and progressivism – remain and we won’t be deterred as we continue to attract world-class business to communities across New York State.

looks like we have just begun to turn a corner in the public health crisis of opioid addiction, overdose and death.

It is not over and we cannot let our guard down.

However, by most measures, things are getting better in New York State and in our county.

The Otsego County Coroner’s Office reports a 90-percent drop in opioid overdose deaths since 2016.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that opioid related deaths in New York State have dropped 15 percent since last year.

In light of the 72,000 people that died from overdose in the U.S. last year, our local and state numbers are the hope we needed to see.

So, what changed to make the difference? Actually, a lot of things changed.

It was vital that we as a society began to accept that addiction is a disease. It is a chronic, progressive, relaps-

ing disease with too-often fatal consequences.

I’m not sure we’re there as a society, but many of our systems now are.

The government has come to understand it can play a major role through sound public health policy.

Firefighters, EMS and police are carrying the lifesaving overdose antidote most commonly called Narcan. Community members are responding to training opportunities, films related to the crisis and other community forums to educate themselves on the issue.

Healthcare has changed its approach to helping the person with a substance use disorder. They are no longer “those people,” but instead are “our patients.”

Individuals can now receive addiction care by walking into their Primary Care. Emergency departments can begin medication-assisted treatment right on the spot.

Insurance carriers are being held accountable for covering addiction in the same way that they would

cover any other chronic illness. No longer must a person with opioid use disorder “fail first” at outpatient treatment before being admitted into a longer-term treatment facility.

The Otsego County Opiate Task Force has been active in our communities to support, advocate, and participate in these changes.

Although we can’t take credit for the changes, we have been working hard to be part of the solution. There is still much work to do.

The truth is, we have an addiction crisis, not just an opioid crisis. But, we are happy to take the glimmers of hope where we can find them.

With springtime approaching, I am reminded by the CVS example of applied ethics of the decades-long silence by the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station on West Lake Road, regarding

the use of pesticides and herbicides on the Leatherstocking Golf Course on Otsego Lake, the source of drinking water for the Village of Cooperstown and camps along its shore.

Since the Susquehanna River originates at the south end of the Glimmerglass, we have a downstream responsibility to the Chesapeake Bay as well.

Since biology is the study of life, where is the fundamental concern over

the use of chemicals designed to kill weeds on the shore of our drinking water?

The often-heard excuse – “Nothing has ever been found in the tests” – is not reassuring.

When it does show up, it will be too late.

Martha’s Vineyard has an organic golf course. Cooperstown should as well.

Oneonta – Calvin Short has sold his farm of 100 acres to Thomas Burnside of Otego for $3,100. It will be occupied by his son Sylvester Burnside.

Scramling & Michael have opened a real estate agency in connection with their law business over the store of Cope & Co. The boot and shoe firm of Pardee and Coats may be found at their new store on Main Street where everybody can be shod on very reasonable terms.

An elegant fine-toned bell for the new M.E. Church arrived last week from Troy, and will soon be in position to send its music over the hills and along the valleys.

The coal trains passing up the valley are increasingly large, and yet the trade is only beginning. From January 18 to January 30 Bissell & Yager sold at their office 197 tons of coal.

125 Years Ago

At five o’clock on Thursday afternoon the State Normal School building in Oneonta stood in all its massive proportions, the scholastic home of over six hundred pupils, the pride and hope of the town, the glory of its friends and of the friends of education in all this section. At half past six o’clock flames wrapped the noble structure from basement to peak, and in glowing colors heralded the story of its doom upon the cloud-hung sky. At eight o’clock empty walls and swiftly dying embers, and open windows peering out like sightless eyes of the dead, were all that were left.

Such in brief is the day’s tragic history of a building whose foundations “were laid in honor and good faith,” which has had a brief but noble history, and which now meets its first great reverse.

80 Years Ago

The victim of a sudden rise in flood waters in the Charlotte Creek at Davenport Center, Patsy, a ten months old white Collie, was rescued by two men in a rowboat last night after she had been marooned on a bit of high ground in the midst of the swollen torrent for more than two days.

Two previous attempts to save her had failed. Spontaneous cheers arose from dozens of onlookers who lined the adjacent highway as Patsy joyfully greeted her rescuers with tail wagging and high-pitched barks before stepping daintily into the frail craft as they held it at a precarious angle in the dangerously swift current. Automobile horns added to the din as the rowboat started on its round-about way back to dry land and safety.

The attrition rate – the proportion of students who leave without finishing four years – is down 33 percent and annual fund giving is 150 percent higher than this time last year, college officials said. Although it took a tuition increase, Hartwick College Financial Vice-President Walter Kuhn predicted next year’s budget would be balanced after four years of deficits. With stronger admissions the outlook for financial stability is improved for next year, with 1,000 students the total capacity.

A 21-year-old Oneonta man was arrested Thursday in connection with a fight last December involving students at State University College Oneonta, city police reported.

Police charged Keith J. Hart with first-degree riot, a felony, and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was arrested about 2:30 a.m. and released on $150 bail.

Police said Hart was the instigator of a fight about 3:15 a.m. on December 12 at 140 Main Street that involved many people and resulted in a SUNY student’s admission February 1919 to Fox Hospital with an eye injury. Of two other SUNY students charged in December with riot, one was also charged with felony assault. Officers at the scene reported that a door at the Main Street building was broken and several holes were punched into the wall.

A basic human need works in our beloved Upstate’s favor: “People want to live where they came from. I know a number of people who moved back home from California.” New Yorkers, even in Tempe or South Carolina, still ♥ New York.

That goes for Gerald Benjamin, too, who at 73 can still say, “I’m not ready to walk.”

Until Available 24/7, Renewable Energy Not Ready For Prime Time

he Otsego County Chamber board and president deserve a heartfelt “thank you” for having the vision and courage to host the “Energy Summit” Thursday, Jan. 31, at The Otesaga.

Speakers from New York and Pennsylvania talked about fossil fuels and renewables, including biomass, ethanol, electric cars, wind, solar and geo-thermal. At the end of the day, it was clear that, although promising for the future, renewables are not MIKE currently capable of ZAGATA replacing or offsetting our demand for energy provided by fossil fuels.

• That does not mean we should abandon our pursuit of alternative sources of energy that emit less carbon and are cost-competitive with fossil fuels. Natural gas, our cleanest-burning fossil fuel, is currently abundant and inexpensive relative to renewables and thus offers us a bridge to the time when one or more renewables is capable of replacing it by being available, reliable and cost-competitive.

If a renewable is going to totally replace a fossil fuel, it must available 24 hours a day and 365 days per year.

If it can’t meet that criterion, then it will be relegated to being part of a mix or blend of energy sources.

At present, solar does not meet that criterion as the sun doesn’t shine 24 hours per day and we don’t yet have a mechanism of storing energy created during the day while it is shining.

Both Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig and state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford, echoed the need to pursue future renewable alternative energy sources, but they were clear in their recognition of the fact that we need natural gas and we need it now.

As the temperature hovered around -2 degrees and attendees were talking about frozen pipes, one speaker said that we shouldn’t upgrade our infrastructure for natural gas now because it might derail their agenda to replace it with one or more renewables.

On Energy Future, State Must Pick Right Side Of Scale To the Editor: My letter relates to previous submissions regarding energy development, specifically Dick Downey’s letter from the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 editions.

Mr. Downey brings forward two frustrating points. The first is that Climate Change may not be real or related to human activity, and the second that renewable energy is viable only with state support.

I will start with Mr. Downey’s view on climate change, and his contention that resistance to expanding fossil fuel development is because of a “feeling” it will lead to Climate Change.

This is not a feeling. I am

often accused of not having enough feelings, but in this case, I don’t need them.

In my view this is settled science.

We can give Mr. Downey room for doubt and not call it fact, but we cannot dismiss the acres of research on this topic with the widely accepted and simple conclusion – the burning of gas increases greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which in turn warms the planet.

Mr. Downey also brings forward another point, and it is one worth debating because it does not yet have a settled course of action, and that is if the state should tip the scale, or pick winners and losers.

He claims the scale of measurement of gas versus renewable is not equitable because of subsidies favoring renewables. He is absolutely right to look skeptically at these conditions and the economic value of each, and to try to draw a fair comparison, but his letter omits an important consideration – gas receives state support too.

The very thing that brought about this wave of discussion of energy policy was Otsego Now’s application for a grant to support the construction of a gas-decompressor station in Oneonta. That grant is state money, or taxpayer money, going to support gas

Similarly, Atwell asked if he supported impeaching President Donald Trump, whom he called “mentally ill.”

“I’m going to do whatever the truth requires me to do,” he said. “This process has been thorough and extensive, but I intend to read the Mueller Report and make my decision from that.”

Candace Shannon, Brookwood School board president, asked what he would do to support students struggling with poverty in rural schools, as well as those in need of special needs and mental health services.

“Our young people are being left behind,” Delgado said. “We spend more money on corporate welfare than we do on the Department of Education.

We need to invest in education, including Universal Pre-K.” He also said he supported a variety of student-loan debt-relief programs, including loan forgiveness for public service jobs, such as the Peace Corps or Teach for America. “Young people feel paralyzed by their debt,” he said. “The government needs to step in, lower the interest rate on student loans and free up young people to the business of living their lives freely.”

A member of the Ag Committee, he spoke about farm bills, which he wants to see give small farms the same access to programs such as value-added products, that corporate and “mega-farms” do.

“We need to prioritize rural farmers,” he said. “I drive this district, and I don’t see corporate farms, but for too long, that concentration of wealth and power is sucking the life out of communities like ours.

But guess what? I’m on the Ag committee.”

Following the meeting, Delgado stayed to meet and greet with constituents, including posing for photos.

He lamented that he hadn’t had a chance to talk about infrastructure and the opioid crisis, both issues which he is concerned about.

“Eighty percent of the roads in this county are in disrepair,” he said. “We need to support rural infrastructure, and that includes highways, but it also includes rail, cell service and broadband. Robust infrastructure can do that.”

He also wants to decriminalize drug use, focusing on treatment rather than incarceration. “We need more treatment centers and better treatment,” he said.

“And we need to make sure companies who are overprescribing highly addictive medications are held accountable.”

Delgado will host an open house 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 at his new Oneonta Office, 189 Main St, Suite 500.

“I am here to be your representative,” he said. “I am only beholden to you.”

She added, “For me, these theatres are all about building your communities where your various communities can intersect and encounter each…and find ways to interact, particularly in polarizing times.”

Another concern that young people will be able to obtain and buy or sell pot more easily, despite the 21year-old limit on all those.

“A couple of people spoke (and) said they had told their kids to stay away from marijuana their whole

lives,” Kennedy reported.

“They wondered, what were they supposed to tell their kids now?”

Other risks include: environmental impact (high energy costs and reduced water quality associated with growing marijuana), monitoring a cash-only industry, ensuring federal law – it still considers possession and selling illegal – is obeyed, and what to do about people jailed for pre-legalization violations.

“There is no easy, oneway answer to them,” Kennedy said.

ou may have noticed a tug boat, “Bubba,” parked in the snow between the Lakefront Hotel & Restaurant and the lighthouse.

There’s a story behind it.

Tugboat ‘Bubba’ Will Break Up Otsego Lake Ice This Spring BUBBA/From B1 ‘blowing by then, pushing the ice away from the shore. Last year was another story, she recalled with a shiver, “there was a Northwest wind, 30 miles per hour, that never stopped.”

In warm Aprils, the mere wake of the cutter could break up the ice. “Last year, we had to cut it with the boat,” she said. “You’re getting the boat up on the ice and cracking it. We broke six engine shafts.”

“It was 10 days of this,” she recounted. “I didn’t get to bed for 10 days.”

Nonetheless, frozen nature overwhelmed, knocking out the Lakeland Shore Association dock.

“We cut straight for 48 hours,” Paula explained. “We left the lake for a half hour to fuel up. I ran up to get sandwiches. By the time we got back the dock was gone.”

Then, the ice pierced “Blue’s” hull. Water got into the hold and, when Paula got back the next morning, it had frozen and cracked both engines.

As it happens, the cutter was unheated. And Wikoff and brother Fred Zoeller – she operates the hotel; he the restaurant – finished the ice-cutting in “a little fishing boat” with steel welded around it; it also lacked heat.

Again she shivers, thinking of the experience.

The cutter was sent off to Canada for repairs. “But I said to my brother: ‘This is it. I’m not doing this if we don’t get another boat’,” said Paula.

his wife, also Paula, in the 1950s – doesn’t leave the family much choice.

First, Paula approached John Scarano, an Albany boat builder who had created the Glimmerglass Queen, the tour boat that plies Otsego’s waters each summer. He was happy to build them another boat – for $140,000.

“For a 10-day, two-week thing every year? I said, ‘That’s too

much’,” she continued. “We found some boats, but they were really rough.” They spread the word they were looking for a boat, and Tom Swatling of Cherry Valley, looking online, happened on “Bubba,” docked in Seattle.

Paula called out there to owner Garrett Newman and was intrigued. The marine survey showed Bubba, which had been

used since the 1950s to bring larger boats to dock in the Port of Seattle, only had 585 hours of use. The price was $13,900; the replacement value, $130,000.

“I did my first wire transfer the next day,” she said.

The boat had been on the market for a year. But, wouldn’t you know, as soon as Newman got the money, he was approach by another buyer, urging him to cancel the deal with the Cooperstown woman and offering twice as much.

“Garrett, you made a deal with me,” Paula said – emphatically, you can imagine. “I’m not letting you get out of this.”

The next question was, how to get it here. In the end, the owner drove it cross country. It was 24feet tall – “the hull is really deep, which is what we want” – so it was tricky traversing the roads.

“It arrived on Halloween.”

Wikoff said to herself, “I hope this isn’t a bad omen, coming on Halloween.”

Garrett wanted to leave the next day, but Paula insisted on a trial run, retrieving the rudder from the hold and attaching it.

“We took it up to Kingfisher Tower and back,” the new owner said.

“By the time we came back, people were calling the office: ‘What is that cute boat on the lake? It’s really a darling boat.’”

This year, with the tug and the steel cutter back from repairs in Canada with two new engines, Paula’s almost looking forward to ice-cutting. Watch for it in April.

Best of all, from Paula’s point of view: the cabin is heated.

Permanent Monument Will Replace Makeshift Crosses At Site Of Crash

Josh Loden, whose family owns the Apple Barrel, looks at the touching makeshift crosses at the site of a fatal crash that took the lives of 17 young people plus three others, and envisions a permanent monument there. He’s participating in a fund drive to make that a reality.

It was in those conversations that the idea of a permanent memorial arose.

“We want to honor the victims and give the family a place to grieve,” he said.

“We’ve been having discussions about what they want.”

Loden, himself a former First Responder, also wants the memorial to honor those who rushed to the scene.

“Those guys really saw some things,” he said. “I can’t imagine what they’re going through after that.”

Once the concept is finalized with the families, they’ll put out a Request For Proposals, seeking artists, sculptors and designers to submit ideas for the memorial.

“We want to give the community a chance to be part of this,” he said.

“We’re still talking with the families, trying to figure out what they want it to be.”

To raise funds for the memorial, the Apple Barrel began selling merchandise featuring artwork from the Iroquois Museum of the “skydome,” a Native American motif representative of the whole universe.

“In trying to figure out a common theme between Schoharie and Amsterdam, we went back to our Mohawk roots,” said Loden.

“We worked with the Iroquois Museum to design something that reflects Mother Earth, the Celestial Tree, and that life continues on in the Skyworld.”

Harney & Sons Tea of Millerton, Dutchess County, donated a basket of teas as a prize for the store to raffle off as a fundraiser. Emeric Harney, “head of merchandising had heard what had happened and came into the store on a delivery and dropped it off,” he said.

“People have been incredible with donations.”

So far, the foundation has raised $30,000 towards the memorial, which will also be used as a permanent fund for maintaining the project.

On June 1, the foundation will host an all-day fundraiser in Amsterdam, featuring music, food, carnival games and more.

“We hope to have some concept art or a prototype ready for people to see then,” said Loden.

An investigation into the crash revealed that the vehicle, owned by Prestige Limousines, had failed inspections and that the driver, Scott T. Lisinicchia, was not licensed to drive that vehicle.

On Oct. 10, state police arrested Nauman Hussain, operator of Prestige Limousines and the son of the owner, former FBI informant Shahed Hussain, and charged him with criminally negligent homicide.

Loden hopes the memorial will be built in time for the 1-year anniversary of the crash. But until then, he said, people are welcome to bring flowers or reflect at the memorials already in place.

“We encourage anyone who wants to come to come,” he said.

ONEONTA – Graham Duncan, 97, a published poet and 35-year SUNY Oneonta English professor who, with the 87th Infantry during World War II, witnessed Buchenwald’s liberation, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019, at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, following a brief illness.

He was born in Poughkeepsie in 1922 and attended the New York State College for Teachers at Albany and Cornell University.

After completing his doc-

torate in English, he taught for three years at Russell Sage College and 35 years at SUNY Oneonta. He retired from full-time teaching in 1991.

As a member of the 87th Infantry Division in Europe he was in the Battle of the Bulge and was at the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany.

“Every Infant’s Blood: New and Selected Poems” was published in 2002. His poems also appeared in

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Ithaca; his niece, Elizabeth (husband, Robert Fine) of Seabrook Island, S.C., and their three sons, (Philip, Robert and Logan); his nephew, Brian (wife, Margaret), of Kendall Park, N.J.; his cousin, Rita Gritman of Norridgewock, Maine and her daughters, (Wanda, Donna and Alinda); as well as other relatives

and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert A. and Graham Duncan Claire Arbuckle Duncan of Poughkeepsie; and his brother, Howard A. Duncan (and sister-in-law, Mary) of Hawthorne.

Scott Sorensen, 86;Worked At Boys & Girls Club

ONEONTA – Scott Sorenson, 86, a Korean War paratrooper and Scintilla (Amphenol) retiree, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2019 at the state Veteran’s Home in Oxford.

He was born on Jan. 3, 1933, in Otego, the son of Egnar and Ethel (Dodge) Sorensen. He married Margaret Ellen Simonds on March 6, 1954.

A veteran of the Korean War, Scott was a paratrooper in the Army. He was a member of the 187th Airborne Regiment and performed two combat jumps.

Returning home, he was employed at Scintilla in

Sidney for 32 years. He also worked for many years with Carl Delberta at the Oneonta Boys Club.

An active person, Scott enjoyed paddling canoe and raced in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta many times.

He enjoyed playing baseball and softball. He was an avid hiker and loved to ski and ice skate. A talented artist, he also loved to draw.

He belonged to many local groups and organizations, including the Oneonta Boys Club, the Oneonta Fire Department, the Elks Club, the Oneonta VFW and the Sixth Ward Athletic Club.

He also served on the Board

of Directors for the Oneonta Boy’s Club.

Scott is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret (Peg) Scott Sorensen; Sorenson his daughter, Laura (Bill) Hurley; his son Dan (Rose) Sorensen; his grandchildren, Meaghan (Steve) Sobers, Michael Hurley, Jenelle (Rick) May, and Sheldon (Stephanie) Sorensen; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Dagmar (Don) Potter; and many nieces and

nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and his sisters, Laura Mongillo and Anna Pearson.

Calling hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

A graveside committal service will take place in the spring at Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Donations in Scott’s memory may be made to the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, 70 River Street, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

MARYLAND – Edward Vincent Lynch, 47, passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 2, 2019.

Edward was a 1989 graduate of Franklin Central School, then entered the Air Force. Michelle and Edward were married on July 22, 1994.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Jane Lynch and Robert Foote; grandparents,

Ethel and Vincent Moore; father, Donald Lynch; and stepson, Cameron Sanchez.

Symphony Manager The Catskill Symphony Orchestra seeks a highly organized individual to oversee the overall management of the symphony. This is a part-time position, averaging 20-30 hours per week; weekends as required for concerts (4-5x/year) and special events.
