eginning this week, Bassett Healthcare Network is resuming partial visitation for inpatients at its hospitals: Bassett in Cooperstown, Fox in Oneonta, Cobleskill Regional, Little Falls and O’Connor in Delhi.

Visitation hours are limited to 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. weekdays. On weekends, hours will be 1-5 p.m.

One visitor at a time will be allowed, with a maximum of two patients a day – four hours total per patient.

ristian House, proprietor of Oneonta’s former Monkey Barrel Toys, loves puzzles.

In fact, he’s found a way to make a living by solving them. In the decade since he moved back to the county, he’s earned income as a toy store owner, math teacher and writer of crosswords and math problems.

(His crosswords show up in

newspapers including the New York Times and Wall Street Journal; the math questions appear in textbooks).

Shocking as it may have been at another time, the Baseball Hall of Fame’s announcement last week that this year’s July 25 Induction Ceremony will be broadcast on TV by the MLB Network, that’s it, Derek Jeter has been largely accepted in Baseball Town.

What was expected to be recordbreaking crowds cheering superstar Derek Jeter on the Clark Sports Center fields into the Hall of Plaques has turned into a so-far unspecified number of people in an unspecified venue.

The word of the week is “disappointed,” sometimes followed by a “but.”

“While the village is disappointed,” said Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch, “I think the Hall of Fame made a wise – and probably the only – decision they could make.”

“To say it’s disappointing is an understatement,” added Jeff Katz, Friends of Doubleday president (and former mayor), “but not a surprise.

Otten Roemer Celebrates 100th Birthday

n August 1939, Inge Otten took a ferry to Sweden, then drove on through the night to Oslo, Norway and escaped on the SS Bergensfjord along with the von Trapp Family Singers after receiving an urgent telegram.

Inge’s 55-yearOtten marriage Roemer to Martin Otten began in 1941. She and Martin bought a dairy farm in Unadilla Township and moved there with their two children, Helga and Martin, in 1945. Shortly thereafter daughters Bettie and Melanie were born.

$2.5K Grant Helps Oneonta’s Velasco To Teach Cooking ONEONTA

K

imberly Velasco of Oneonta Middle School was selected as one of 40 New York teachers to win State Farm Teacher Assist grant.

State Farm has awarded each of the 40 teachers with a $2,500 grant to implement or support their classroom projects.

With her funding, Velasco will support her Basic Life Skills cooking lessons for at-home students. Food and cooking items will be purchased and sent home to students with disabilities who are learning to cook meals and snacks for themselves.

Velasco’s goal is to enable her students to gain confidence and independence.

1940s, and she was a 4H leader in the 1950s. With four children, Inge went back to college in Oneonta and achieved her dream of becoming a teacher.

She graduated in 1959 and taught third and fourth grade in Mt. Upton for over 20 years. Inge and Martin moved off the farm to Otego in 1967.

After becoming a widow, Inge learned to play accor-

dion. She became active in the German Reading Group from Cooperstown where she met Carl Roemer from Fly Creek. They were married over 15 years, before he died in 2013.

After his death, Inge moved to Oneonta, continuing her active life, including joining a harmonica band at 95. At 99 she bought a Chromebook and uses it to connect with relatives.

Inge Otten Roemer celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday February 1, 2021.

There was a dinner party in her honor at her apartment in Otego on the prior Saturday and an international Zoom party was held on Inge’s birthday with friends and family from Europe and the U.S. with a few guests at her apartment.

t the time Sam Nader’s Oneonta Athletic Association was affiliated with the Detroit Tigers, the MLB team allocated a certain number of baseballs per season to its Minor League John Nader teams.

Anything over was a local team’s responsibility.

At the end of the Oneonta Tigers first season, Sam Nader tallied baseballs used, and mailed a check.

The phone rang. It was Detroit. “What’s this for?” he was asked.

lbert S. “Sam” Nader passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, at his home as he wished, surrounded by members of his family.

He was born on July 8, 1919, in Oneonta, the son of Elias Andrew Nader and Rose Rajah Nader (Nassar). He was one of six Nader children. Sam Nader spent

nearly his entire life in Oneonta. He was a proud lifelong resident of the 6th Ward and became an integral member of the community.

He graduated from Oneonta High School in 1938, where he excelled as a lefthanded pitcher.

Mr. Nader attended Bates College and later Hartwick College and played baseball at both institutions. As World War II approached, Mr. Nader began working for the Scintilla Magneto division of the Bendix

Corp. in Sidney.

At the outset of the war, he sought to enlist in the Army and was initially turned away due to poor vision. He later successfully enlisted and became a machine gunner in the European Theater of Operations where he fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Nader was honorably discharged in 1945 and during his service earned a Bronze Star, three battle stars, an Army Commendation Medal, and Army of Please See OBITUARY, A7

Over Three Generations, Oneonta’s Naders Prove It

W

ith the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the summer-long riots following George Floyd’s death and debates over race relations, we can forget: We live in a great country, where ambition and hard work are almost assuredly rewarded.

A case in point – a life in point – is Sam Nader, the respected and beloved former mayor of Oneonta, who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, at age 101.

When Sam Nader was born in 1919 in Oneonta’s Sixth Ward, you might have thought his prospects were limited.

His parents, Elias and Rose, had married in the old country in 1907, and had come to America in hopes of a better life. Senator Cassidy (R-La.) voted that the impeachment trial is indeed Constitutional (which it is) against the wishes of his party. He then heard the evidence and voted to convict Trump.

Underfunding Led To Nursing-Home Crisis

W

hen it comes to the COVID19 pandemic, one thing is consistent – politicians are placing blame for the effects of the virus at the feet of other politicians, policymakers and providers, but nobody is focusing blame for the consequences of the virus where it truly belongs, with: • The virus itself • The state’s “hospital-centric” approach to combatting the virus and • Historic underfunding of longterm care.

At the onset of the pandemic, the

State of New York failed to immediately focus fully on the needs of nursing homes, and instead implemented a “hospital-centric” approach that led to limited access to testing, extensive STEPHEN staffing and PPE HANSE shortages in nursing homes.

The COVID-19 virus first appeared in the United States at a nursing home

in Washington State, with devastating consequences. New York disregarded this fact and implemented a “hospitalcentric” approach to combatting the virus, instead of looking at the people who were most susceptible to the COVID-19 virus – namely nursinghome residents.

Learn All You Can – Never omit an opportunity to learn all you can.

Sir Walter Scott said that even in a stagecoach he always found somebody that could tell him something that he did not know. Conversation is frequently more useful than books for purposes of knowledge.

It is therefore a mistake to be morose and silent among persons whom you think to be ignorant, for a little sociability on your part will draw them out, and they will impart wisdom, and will be able to teach you something, no matter how ordinary their employment.

Indeed, some of the most sagacious remarks are made by persons of this description respecting their particular pursuit. Hugh Miller, the Scotch geologist, owes not a little of his fame to observations made when he was a journeyman stone mason, and working in a quarry.

Socrates well said that there was but one good, which is knowledge, and one evil, which is ignorance.

If there is a moment’s leisure, spend it over a good book or in instructive talking with the first you meet.

125 Years Ago

Local: During the year ending February 10, 1896, 544 mortgages, bills of sales, notes and renewals were filed in the Office of the Town Clerk of Oneonta, besides numerous other papers and documents required by law to

be placed on file.

A committee of the Oneonta Club, consisting of W.H. Morris, Reuben Reynolds, Charles Smith, George B. Baird and Charles F. Shelland, has purchased a site for the new club house – the Amsden property at No. 51 Dietz Street – for $3,500.

The price paid by the Village of Oneonta for 64 electric lights is $8,746.

The new office, which is being built for the master mechanic and clerks of the railroad shop was broken into Saturday night, and about $50 worth of carpenters’ tools stolen.

Work – Machines and Animals: A study of tractor operation on 87 New York farms this past year by the State College of Agriculture shows wide variation in the relative efficiency of tractors and horses. At harrowing, a tractor accomplished as much in a day, on the average as from seven to nine horses. At harrowing, a tractor accomplished as much as six horses, at binding corn or grain as much as from four to five horses, and at mowing as much as three horses. This helps to explain the general opinion of farmers that the use of tractors is profitable on heavy operations, but that horses are cheaper for the light, rapid operations.

Local Assistance Funds: It is estimated that Otsego County will receive in the neighborhood of $7,000,000 in Local Assistance Funds for the year 1961-1962, according to Assemblyman Paul L. Talbot. This estimate is based on the figures in the budget presented by Governor Rockefeller.

For per capita assistance Otsego County subdivisions will receive $262,000, which is $10,000 above last year’s figure. Aid to education will total $5,036,000, $394,000 above last year’s figure. For Health and Social Welfare the County will receive $358,000, $5,000 less than last year. For highway construction the total will be $1,195,000, $17,000 more than last year. These figures do not include figures for any contracts let by the Public Works Department for new construction. Another $26,000 is coming to Otsego County to support youth and recreation programs, Veterans’ Affairs, Conservation, and Probation Services. Additional aid from the state in amounts to be determined will be available for the following programs – Aid in lieu of railroad taxes; new library systems; Civil Defense Emergency Operating Centers; urban renewal grants; and medical care for the aged.

The State Teachers’ College in Oneonta will also have a large sum of money available for construction. These funds are not included in the education allotment.”

Laurens – A Jump Rope-a-thon was held in the Laurens Central School gymnasium last Saturday.

Students assembled teams of six and found sponsors who promised to contribute a certain amount for every minute of rope jumping.

The event ran for three hours.

You spend so much time and money at the doctor’s office. You don’t feel good about yourself. You may have all different kinds of surgeries. You can change the way you look at yourself. Don’t be obese.

If you just eat healthy and work hard you can make a difference.

As Sam’s son, John Nader, himself a former mayor, now SUNY Farmingdale president, described it the other day, it was a life centered on family, hard work and community, as he learned in his Sixth Ward boyhood that it should be.

There was more. Those of you who knew him, or met him only once, recall his warmth and curiosity. When he spoke with you, he gave the impression there was no one he’d rather be speaking to at that particular moment than you.

Of course he would succeed, as he did.

Nader’s Cornerstone: Family, Community, Work Ethic, Honesty WISDOM/From A3 John, was one of the cornerstones of the Wisdom of Sam Nader, the former mayor and Oneonta Yankees owner who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 101, in his home at 96 River St. in his beloved Sixth Ward.

Other guiding principles – common in his father’s generation, said the son – were family, work ethic and community, forged growing up in the Depression and by the hardships of World War II. “He was part of a generation that was very, very civically mind,” said John.

Although Sam spent a career in politics, befriending Bobby Kennedy, then New York State’s U.S. senator, “he did not care, on the local level, about political parties,” said the son.

That was indicated in 1961 when Nader, Republican, was denied his party’s nomination for mayor. The city wasn’t ready for a mayor from the wrong side of the tracks – the Sixth Ward, the “Lower Deck.”

He formed his own Good Government Party, got the Democratic nomination, and won by 19 votes.

But party didn’t matter, John underscored: When the Boston Red Sox pulled its Minor League out of Oneonta after one season,

his father lined up 10 investors in one day to bring in the Yankees: five Republicans and five Democrats.

“My sisters and I learned by observation,” said John, himself a former mayor and now SUNY Farmingdale president, adding, “We learned by obeying.”

Still, in an interview after his father’s passing, John could recount a number of quotes that could constitute “The Wisdom of

For instance, “Are you doing this for yourself? Or are you doing this for the larger good?”

Or, “If someone is badmouthing someone in front of you, they’re badmouthing you in front of somebody else.”

And, his response to his son John, then a county board member thinking of running for mayor: “There are five people who know what this job is like .., and you aren’t one of them.”

(He also told his son, “Just keep in mind: you could lose,” and advised John to prepare to do so graciously.)

The community where Sam Nader thrived is not the Oneonta of today, the son recalled. In those days, people stayed around.

There were thousands of career-long jobs to be had locally – Bendix Corp. in Sidney (now Amphenol), where Sam Nader rose to director of purchasing in a 40year career, as well the D&H yards, the colleges and Fox Hospital.

If young people they went to college, is was usually SUNY Oneonta or Hartwick College. His father had to drop out of college to help support his family during the Depression, but his short time at Bates College in Maine broadened his outlook.

He joined Bendix before

World War II, served as an Army machine gunner in the Battle of the Bulge, and returned to Bendix at the war’s end.

While his personality, political success and ownership of the Oneonta Yankees would help bring the Sixth Ward itself into the city’s mainstream, the first step came in 1954, when he married Alice House, daughter of a prominent doctor and descendant of Oneonta founder Eliakim Ford.

In interviews over the years, Sam would credit his wife with raising his children, John and sisters Alice and Suzanne, his pride and joy, and express regret he didn’t have more time to spend with his growing family.

John has a different take: “She was as passionate about baseball as he was, maybe even moreso.”

And she made his political career possible: “She was there to do all the things that he couldn’t do at home” because of his responsibilities.

When Sam organized a dinner at the Armory in 1968 for Bobby Kennedy, the senator recruited Alice to clip the local newspapers and send his office the clippings.

She passed away in 1991 in a car crash in Georgia; her husband was also injured.

Another piece of Sam Nader’s wisdom: “If you can’t work with

other people, you aren’t going to accomplish anything.”

He proved that in his campaign to build the city airport – renamed the Albert S. Nader Regional Airport in 2016 – which generated some ridicule as “Nader’s Folly,” and was excoriated by Ed More, a popular newspaper columnist in the 1960s..

“My father called Mr. More,” said John. “He took him to the site of the airport and described what would be there.”

“Ed More changed his mind.”

As his son describes it, he was the same considerate man all the way to the end.

When a granddaughter arrived in December she found her grandfather had fallen, lying on the floor, the beginning of the end. Sam asked conversationally, “When did you get in?”

The family, well represented

by Sam’s children and seven grandchildren, held a small remembrance last Saturday, Feb. 13, a time for reflection. (A larger celebration of Sam Nader’s life may occur next summer.)

The next day, John Nader, reflectively, showed an iPhone photo of his son, Mark, who works for the MLB but still lives in Oneonta, and Mark’s son, Levi Samuel Nader. The story continues.

Sam Experienced Depression, WWII, Then Help Build Prosperous City

In 1954, Mr. Nader married Alice House at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Oneonta, and settled into their home on River Street. She predeceased him in 1991. Alice and Sam Nader had three children. John S. Nader of Farmingdale (Kathy), Alice O’Conner of Lilburn, Ga. (Cliff) and Suzanne Longo of Havertown, Pa. (Tom).

Their River Street home was always open to hundreds of students, friends, family, baseball players, and notables for decades.

Upon his discharge from the Army, Mr. Nader resumed his career at Bendix in Sidney working in both quality assurance and procurement for over 40 years. He retired in 1983 as director of purchasing for Bendix Electrical Components Division.

Sam Nader was an avid sports fan and golfer. In his youth, he caddied at the Oneonta Country Club and became an accomplished player – once earning the club’s handicap championship. He became a season ticketholder of New York Giants in 1952 and saw the team play in every one of the six home stadiums used by the team. He attended some of the premier events in sports including, NFL and NFC champions, many World Series games, the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, and the Masters. In 1948, he obtained a copyright for a sports calendar.

Mr. Nader had an extraordinary civic career.

He served as an alderman representing the Sixth Ward as well as a city assessor and as legislative assistant to Assemblyman Paul Talbot. In 1961, he was elected mayor of the City of Oneonta and was reelected in 1965.

During his two terms, the city made remarkable progress. His vision for the Oneonta Municipal Airport was realized, the Housing Authority was created and Oneonta became one of the leading recipients of federal funds for municipal infrastructure.

Following his elected service, Mr. Nader also served as chair of the Otsego County Democratic Committee.

His aspiration to bring minor league baseball back to Oneonta was fulfilled

in 1966 when the Oneonta Red Sox became part of the New York-Penn League.

Subsequently Mr. Nader secured a working agreement with his beloved New York Yankees. In 1968, along with nine other civic leaders, he formed the Oneonta Athletic Corp., purchased the team and the Oneonta Yankees became a community fixture for over 30 years.

Oneonta’s affiliation with the Yankees was one of the longest in minor league baseball. The Oneonta Yankees became well known as one of the most successful franchises in minor league baseball and operated in one of its smallest markets.

The team launched the

career of dozens of Major League players and hosted some of baseball’s greatest names at Damaschke Field.

Following the Yankees’ departure in 1999, the Detroit Tigers began a long and successful affiliation with the OAC and Oneonta.

The Oneonta franchise was recognized with the Bob Freitas Award as the outstanding minor league operation of the year. The New York Pennsylvania League championship trophy was named in honor of Alice House Nader who was integrally involved in the team’s operation.

In addition to his work in government and baseball, Sam was a member of the Board of Directors of the Wilber National Bank, Fox

Hospital, the Oneonta City School District Board of Education, and the Future of Oneonta Foundation, among others. He served as honorary chair of Opportunity for Otsego’s Capital Campaign. Mr. Nader was fortunate to be widely recognized for his civic work.

Sam was honored for his community achievements by the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce, LEAF Council on Alcoholism, Future of Oneonta Foundation, Minor League Baseball and numerous other organizations, including SUNY Oneonta which annually awards the Alice H. and Albert S. Nader Scholarship.

In addition to his wife,

Alice House Nader, who passed away in 1991, Mr. Nader was predeceased by his siblings, Julia, Nausif, Adele, Dorothy, and Jemele as well as a niece and three nephews whom he loved.

He is survived by his three children and their spouses as well as seven grandchildren: Danielle O’Conner of New York City, Mark Nader (Angela) of Oneonta, Kevin O’Conner (Sarah) of Atlanta Ga., Allison Berquist (Peter) of Los Angeles, Rachel Nader of Washington D.C., Sloan

Longo of Philadelphia, and Sarah Nader-Marcus of Oneonta. He is also survived by his great-grandson, Levi Samuel Nader. In addition, Mr. Nader is survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Barbara Church, Carol and Rick Follett, Diane Minogue, and Anissa Shannon. He is also survived by first cousin Fares Nassar of Ithaca.

A private funeral mass is being planned by the family. A celebration of life is planned for the summer of 2021.

IN MEMORIAM

Thomas D. Parrotti, 72 HAMDEN – Thomas Dominic Parrotti, 72, passed away following complications from COVID-19 at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2021.

He was born on May 12, 1948 in Binghamton, and was raised there by his mother Dorothy “Dottie” (Chervenka) and Dominic Parrotti. After high school Thomas studied at the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City.

Thom worked in many professions over the years, including owning his own clothing store and interior design business. He Thomas D. worked for the former Parrotti mayor of Binghamton, Juanita Crabb; together they brought in the Binghamton Mets Stadium.

Thom worked for Bassett Medical Center in multiple capacities until 2019. He was most proud of his implementation of the readmission reduction program he built from the ground up. He also created policies and procedures on their interpreter program to ensure those who needed interpretation had it for their appointments without flaws.

In 2019, he went on to be the chief operating officer of Multilingual Interpretation Services of Central New York.

His longest and most honored work was as a judge for the American Kennel Club. He was a steadfast

supporter of purebred dogs and a popular and respected judge of all Terrier Breeds and Best in Show. As a judge he was known for his friendly and kind demeanor and vast knowledge.

Thom led a very accomplished life and he has much to be proud of. He loved his family farm, he often talked often about the goats, sheep and chickens. Recently, he told stories about his beloved Nick, the miniature horse he saved from near death after he was born in a field during a snowstorm.

When Thom had down time, he enjoyed sewing, baking, being with family, friends and traveling. He had visited all 50 states and Canada and he has traveled abroad. Among his favorite countries were Scotland and Australia.

One of the best gifts Thom received, that he talked about often, was a plot of land in Scotland that will be his final resting place.

Thom loved to garden and be outdoors.

The gardens around his home were one of his beloved passions. He was always so full of life. He had an infectious personality and a laugh that will be remembered by those closest to him forever.

Many have shared that Thom was a teacher, a leader, compassionate, genuine, witty, respectful, loyal, “brought a bright spot and a sense of humor to difficult situations”, authentic, classy, “Always put his patients first”, devoted, “had joy on his face when he judged and chose his winners”, he was always so

passionate and full of life.

Thom is survived by his husband Brett Miller – the two have been together for 19 years; stepdaughter Sonia Miller; his in-laws, Archie and Judy Miller, Michelle (Eric) Young, Michael Miller, and nieces and nephews Alicia and Amber Young and Shannon and Cody Miller.

Thom also had several friends whom he considered family, Alicia Chase; Leigh (Kevin) Briscoe-Dwyer; Brian Wrubleski and his daughters Alex and Natalie; Carmen McCormick and Susan Harris; Maura Coleman; Bobby Thomas; George and Enid Wright and their children Matthew and Katherine.

Thom was predeceased by his mother Dottie in October 2001 and his father Dominic in September 1988. He now has been reunited with his beloved friends who also predeceased him, Maryellen Wrubleski and Robert Black.

A Private Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta on Saturday. A memorial service will be held at a later date. His ashes will be buried later at his piece of property in Scotland.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial scholarship will be established in Thom’s name.

At age 75, Francesco and Maria retired in Naples, Fla. His wife of 54 years, Maria, predeceased him in 2010.

Survivors include Libby Cudmore of Oneonta, former managing editor of Hometown Oneonta and The Freeman’s Journal.

Rivkah was born April 22, 1934, in The Bronx, to Rabbi Isiah and Esther Molotin.

A graduate of Ramaz High School (where she was a Talmudic Champion), she

received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Hunter College.

She went on to earn a master’s from Rikvah Columbia Feldman in Statistics, and a doctorate in English Literature in 1979 from NYU, writing her dissertation on the poetry of Anne Sexton.

In 1961, she adopted her son, Nathan.

She taught English at the Borough of Manhattan Community College for many decades, and, for a time, chaired the department, where she was widely loved by her many students and colleagues. In the 1990s, she taught at SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Cobleskill, dividing her time between her home in Sloansville and the Upper West Side.

She was a world traveler, with multiple trips to Israel, Europe, South America and Asia. In the summer, she could be found in the

vegetable gardens of her Upstate home. She enjoyed attending the opera, the symphony and the ballet.

A lifelong learner, in her retirement she took up ceramics.

In 2010, she married Bernard Bernstein and relocated to Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Now with a travel companion, she continued seeing the world, taking her last trip in 2019, touring Central America.

In addition to her son and her husband, Rivkah is survived by her granddaughters, Shaun, Libby, Hilary, Laura and Bethia, as well as eight greatgrandchildren; Rachel, Jacob, Josie, Joshua, Lucy, Melody, Max and Zachary.

She also maintained a very close relationship with her former daughter-in-law, Nancy, who she loved as family.

She is further survived by her sisters Devorah and Shlomit.

A graveside service was held Thursday, Feb. 4, at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, with the Rabbi Robert Summers officiating.

Puzzlemaster Kristian House of Oneonta throws ten thousand dollars in Monopoly money around the living room. House won the same amount of real dollars last week when he solved a national treasure hunt, following clues he decoded to a hidden spot in Nampa, Idaho.

Back Home, With $10K More

PRIZE/From A1 Morris, flew to Idaho on the hunch that there was a token taped under a playground slide in Nampa, a city west of Boise.

His gamble paid off: he flew home the next day $10,000 richer, the treasure in hand.

Published last November, “The Great U.S. Treasure Hunt” offered readers a chance to participate in “a real-life adventure to find four ordinary items” and win prizes, according to the book’s author, who uses the witty pseudonym Theco DeMaster.

Competitors had already been searching the book for clues for two months when House heard the treasure hunt discussed on a podcast, “The Secret.” He bought the e-book and solved the first chapter clue in 48 hours. Or, to be accurate, he thought he had solved it.

“I noticed that certain words were repeated within sentences. They were uncommon words to be repeated — rolled, shaved, escape,” House said during a phone call from his basement in Oneonta. “I started from the beginning and took the first letter of each of those words that were repeated in a sentence, and it spelled out something I needed to know to solve the puzzle: Trislide, Nampa, Lions, Hermes, Badge.”

From his crossword-solving experience, House knew Nampa was a town out west.

“I looked up Nampa and Lions, and the first thing that came up was Lions Park in Nampa… so I went to Google maps, satellite view of the park, and zoomed in over the playground, and saw the play structure had a slide with three chutes on it.

That was the tri-slide, that’s what I took it to be.”

House has passed his love of puzzles on to his sons, Ian and Eli, both students at Oneonta High School. Eli

started doing the Hometown Oneonta crossword at age 6 and recently submitted his own crossword to the New York Times.

The boys were eager to join their dad on his trip to Idaho. Their mom, pediatrician Kwan Chan-House, said no.

So House bought one airplane ticket, donned a double mask for eight hours and flew across the country.

He drove straight to the park. “But unlike here—we had a foot of snow, it was 20 degrees—in Nampa it was 60 degrees there that day.

The park was packed, with kids running around.”

House was nervous and uncomfortable. Alone in a strange town, he didn’t want to be that creepy guy, all by himself on the playground, crawling around under the slide. So he left. He drove around town for a couple hours, checked into his hotel, afraid the whole time that someone would swoop in and grab the prize while he was gone. He returned to the park and kept watch there until evening before venturing to look.

“The good news is it was right there, right where I thought it was, right under the very bottom of the slide.

It’s amazing some little kid didn’t find it.” The token, a small medallion with an image of Hermes—the Greek god of luck, protector of travellers and thieves— had been duct-taped there since mid-summer.

If you want to try the treasure hunt, you’re too late, says House: the final clue was decoded, the prize uncovered last Sunday near Nashville.

However, the publishers plan to release a second volume this summer. House is featured on this week’s edition of “The Secret,” the same podcast where he first learned about the contest, at https://12treasures.com.

On Theme, Around World Safe At Home, Fest Starts

his week, the Cooperstown Winter Carnival is underway “Around the World, but Safe at Home,” through Sunday, Feb. 21 The “Around the World,” theme was intended to allow for vast and creative participation, but also because it was mindful of the times we find ourselves in, according to Committee Chair Molly Myers.

Previously, all events were held in-person; however, the ongoing pandemic has greatly changed the landscape of the 2021 carnival.

There are a number of contests and events that can be entered; among them: snowman, essay and punch card contests, a medallion hunt (the medallion was already found), talent show

and more.

The prompt for the essay this year is, “What does it mean to be a citizen of the world?”

Surprise tasks will be announced live at 3 p.m. daily throughout the week live on the Facebook, Instagram and the carnival website at: cooperstownwintercarnival. com. A number of prizes are also available.
