Facebook Group aimed at making Otsego County a “Sanctuary for the Second Amendment” is picking up momentum.

On Dec. 20, an active hunter and gun owner, Kaleb White of Oneonta, created the “2A Otsego County Sanctuary Group” on the popular social media platform.

“Otsego County is a great place, and people really care about where they live,” she said. “Some people are slow to change, but that may be the same everywhere. Coming from D.C., a fairly progressive area, that was probably the hardest part for me.”

For now, she said, she has no plans, but intends to return to academia – she taught at Northern Virginia Community College before

In addition to food and personal items, each household also received a gift card.

This year, the Bank of Cooperstown, Council Rock, Hillside Kennels, and Church & Scott have joined the list of supporters.

PORTLANDVILLE — Vera C. Young, 81, formerly of Otego and a bus driver in the Unatego Central School District, passed away on Christmas Day. She was born on July 13, 1938 in Oneonta. She married her high school sweetheart Charles “Chuck” Robert Young on May 26, 1957. He predeceased her in 1996.

Vera worked for many years at Keith Clark in Sidney, and drove a school bus for Unatego Central School.

Vera loved her sons, flowers and gardening, all her pets, and baking, especially for the bus garage.

She was also an avid fan of watching baseball, softball and football on tv.

She is survived by her 5 sons, John, Brian, Craig, Jeff, and Chuck Young; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and her brother, Al Johnston of Missouri.

MILFORD – Marion R. Cotten, 84, who with her husband operated a Town of Milford dairy farm for 36 years, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2019, at Bassett Hospital.

Born Aug. 1, 1935, in the Town of Butternuts, Marion was the daughter of Fields and Lulu (Smith) Miller.

She was raised in the family home on Fields Miller Road (named for the family) and graduated from Gilbertsville High School in the Class of 1955. She married her sweetheart, Lloyd Cotten on Nov. 17, 1956.

From 1956 until his death in June of 1993, Lloyd and Marion owned and together

operated their dairy farm on county Highway 35 in the Town of Milford. Following Lloyd’s death Marion and her boys, Ed and Dennis continued operating the farm, becoming the third generation of Cottens to have farmed the land. The farm was ultimately sold in 1999.

In her spare time, Marion was a homemaker, baker (she was well known for her apple pies), maker of crafts of all sorts (crocheting, knitting, beading and plastic canvas arts) and enjoyed frequenting garage and lawn sales.

Marion is survived by her two sons, Edward

(Debi) Cotten of the Milford area, and Dennis Cotten (Lisa Fleming), also of the Milford area; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A memorial service officiated by the Rev. Sylvia Barrett, Pastor, will be held at the Milford Methodist Church at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2. The family will be in attendance Thursday before the service from 2 to 3 p.m. to receive friends. Burial will follow the service in Milford Cemetery.

DAVENPORT – Janet L. Gano, 82, who except for several years in France lived most of her life in the Davenport and Oneonta area, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday morning, Dec. 21, 2019 following a long illness.

Born on July 13, 1937, in Oneonta, she was the daughter of the late Arthur F. and Velma (Eggler) Shaw.

Janet worked for the former Bresee’s Dept. Store in Oneonta and later worked as a home health aide for various clients in the greater Oneonta area.

She enjoyed knitting and could often be found making a gift for a family member

DAVENPORT – Wayne McCulley, 64, of Davenport/ Schenevus, who worked at Fox Hospital, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019 at St. Peter’s hospital following nearly a 3 year battle with cancer.

Born on February 19, 1955 in Stamford, Wayne was the son of the late Jack and Anna (McLain) McCulley.

Wayne was a graduate of Charlotte Valley Central School in Davenport. He worked at Fox Hospital in the maintenance dept., owned and operated a sawmill, later worked at Butts Lumber Co., and was a Manager of the Dollar Tree Store, where many children thought he was Santa and gave their Christmas request to him.

‘Green Light’ Law, Bail Reform ASTOUND

any sages over the centuries have concluded: The future has not yet been written, (if it ever is). Whatever we’re going through, this too shall pass.

• You may have seen the Associated Press dispatch the other day: The Government Justice Center in Albany is suing to prevent Governor Cuomo from getting a pay raise, saying Section 7, Article XIII of the state Constitution prohibits raises during an elected official’s term.

When he was last elected in November 2018, his salary was $179,000, and has since risen to $200,000. Jan. 1, it rose to $225,000 and on Jan. 1, 2021, it will rise to $250,000.

The New Decade Will Bring Pretty Much What We Expect

ounty Rep. Meg Kennedy, in her interview on being named this newspaper’s Citizen of the Year for 2019, shared this story, which captures just the right note as we begin the new decade.

A customer pulls up to a local gas station. As the owner is filling the tank, the driver asks, “I’m moving to this town. How are the people here?”

“How are they where you come from?” came the reply.

“Great!” says the driver.

“They’re friendly, cheerful, helpful, welcoming – you name it.”

“Well,” says the station owner, pausing from his labors, “I think you’ll find

people around here pretty much the same.”

t this time of year, I normally review positive policies and new laws that have been adopted in Albany. Unfortunately, there was more bad news than good coming from the state Capitol during 2019.

One item that will benefit homeowners is a permanent 2-percent property tax cap.

I have long supported this tax relief measure and have helped pass Senate legislation on a number of previous occasions to guarantee this savings tool.

However, as I have JIM said in the past, for SEWARD the property tax cap to truly deliver we need to end unfunded state mandates that tie the hands of local government officials.

Unfortunately, no mandate relief measures were adopted this year. And, in fact, local governments will now have to prepare for plenty of new costs thanks to the state budget and other Albany missteps. If state officials believe a program is important, than funding must be part of the package.

Forcing the costs on to local governments (and ultimately taxpayers) and then boasting about doing something

good, is disingenuous.

New laws to “reform” New York State’s criminal justice system are also going to be costly – increasing expenses for local governments and putting public safety at risk. These measures, that are set to take effect at the start of the year, have received a great deal of attention in recent weeks as more and more people voice their concerns.

The measures, which I opposed, include: • Bail changes that will allow 90 percent of individuals arrested to walk free without posting bail; • New discovery laws that put increased demands on local prosecutors and could put crime victims and witnesses in danger.

A letter I just received from the state Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials (NYCOM) states, “The dramatic acceleration in the timing of discovery and the expansion of the matters to which it applies will have significant cost and compliance implications for cities and villages with police departments and/or Plewase See SEWARD, A5

nance since the Eisenhower administration. It’s always been an important part of my life, from dinners as a boy listening to the news on the radio, and talking about it with my family, all the way to today, listening to and reading about the current Congressional hearings, and talking about them with my wife.

So in 2011, when Rich Murphy suggested that I run for the county Board of Representatives, I didn’t hesitate.

Now that I’m a newly minted private citizen after eight years on the Board, I’d like to share some thoughts about county government with the county in general.

First and foremost: the quality of the folks who serve you in Cooperstown.

We hear a lot about government corruption and malfeasance and how you can’t trust politicians. From the state level on up, some of this is true and most of it is not.

But in Otsego County, it’s clear to me that everyone who serves on the county board is there to provide a public service. No one’s

21st Century. The Rules of Order say that county board meetings are at 10 a.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. That might have worked in the old days, but those days are past.

Meeting in the middle of a working day reduces transparency and accountability, and it has to change.

Battle Of The Bulge Reminds Of Drago, Nader’s Sacrifices To the Editor: It’s always the right time to be thankful for our veterans who have served selflessly around the world so that we at home can live in peace.

Bank Robbery – The safe of the Schoharie County Bank, at Schoharie Court House, was blown open early Wednesday morning of last week, and robbed of about $5,000 belonging to the Bank, and a considerable larger amount in bonds, jewelry, &c. left on special deposit – amount unknown.

Small Pox – The Deposit Courier of last week says that much excitement prevails in parts of the Town of Masonville and of the adjoining Town of Sanford, resulting from the breaking out of small pox in a family named French.

Several district schools have been temporarily closed.

100 Years Ago

Flyers in the proposed 1920 world-girdling air derby will not travel by Mercator’s projection, but rather by a new “butterfly” map devised by J.S. Cahill of Oakland, California. The Cahill map has been adopted by Major Charles J. Glidden, Executive Secretary of the Aerial Derby Commission.

Mr. Cahill said that an aviator using the Mercator projection as a guide would go 1,000 miles out of his way in a trip from Panama to Yokohama. “If the North Pole were on an island a mile wide,” Cahill said, “it would appear on Mercator’s projection to be 25,000 miles wide, or nearly the total circumference of the Earth at the equator. The inventor of the new map, who worked on his drawings for 15 years said “an impartial and rational world geography is essential to world peace.”

He said, “Mercator’s projection, originally devised for ocean navigators, distorted and exaggerated the earth as it receded from the equator.” This, for instance, made it appear as if South America were much smaller than North America, when, as a matter of fact they were about the same area. The Cahill map is as though an actual sphere had been cut and flattened, its appearance somewhat resembling the outspread wings of a butterfly.

What Children Read – School children no longer read fairy tales and the old familiar fiction, says a report of the American Library Association, based on a survey of the reading habits of nine to eighteen-year-olds throughout the country. Exceptions are “Snow White” and “The Wizard of Oz” in which great interest developed when the movies appeared.

No doubt there will be a similar wave of interest in “Pinocchio” when that picture is released, and in the much-

Recently, the state Sheriffs’ Association, the District Attorneys Association of New York, and the state Association of Chiefs of Police held press conferences around the state to voice their concerns and opposition to the new laws.

As I have said previously, I am open to discussing changes that could better address the way bail is utilized, but judges should still be afforded some discretion.

Starting on Jan. 1, judges will have no opportunity to consider an individual’s criminal history or flight risk when it comes to a bevy of crimes including manslaughter, assault, criminal possession of a gun, and a number of drug sale offenses. Instead, these perpetrators will be released immediately without bail.

Another new law I opposed, which has already taken effect, allows illegal immigrants to receive a driver’s license. Providing a driver’s license, a secure identification document, to someone who is intentionally breaking the law is inconceivable.

This measure is bad public policy that could put

lives in danger, rewards lawbreakers, and sends the wrong message to those who take the legal path to citizenship.

Supporters of the measure like to mention that other states already allow illegal immigrants to drive. However, those states require substantially tighter proof of identification and may impose limitations on driving to incentivize naturalization.

None of those states relies solely on foreign documents for identification purposes, which is the case in New York.

One other new law that will have a major impact is the new farm labor bill. The mandates associated with the law will hurt our upstate farmers and drive up the cost of farm goods that we all purchase.

At the start of the 2019 legislative session, I pledged to advance policies to improve New York’s economy, help reduce the crushing tax burden, and combat population loss. I will continue to advocate for those priorities in 2020 and am hopeful that the mistakes of this past year will not be repeated.

Opinion – Oneonta faces a big test in the 1980s. Between 1960 and 1970, the period of the greatest growth at Hartwick and Oneonta State, Oneonta’s population increased by about 2,500 to 16,030. But, the year-round permanent population remained the same or slightly less than it was in 1960. The golden era of easy community growth is over. There are few signs that Hartwick and Oneonta State will be any bigger five or ten years from now than they are today.

Must Eagles Be Sacrificed To Green Agenda?

I

n 1969, our country moved from demonstrating against the Vietnam War to marching for environmental protection.

That year, Congress passed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which required federal agencies to do an Environmental Assessment (EA) and/or an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) prior to granting a permit allowing a “project” to go forward.

If it was determined the project wouldn’t cause any “significant” environmental MIKE impact, a NegaZAGATA tive Declaration (Neg Dec) could be issued.

If it was determined, via a sciencebased review, that there would be significant impact, the applicant was required to do things to mitigate or offset that impact.

If the impact couldn’t be addressed, the project was either dropped or revised in a manner that would allow the agency or agencies to grant the permit(s).

In 1975, New York State passed its own version of NEPA known as SEQR (State Environmental Quality Review [Act]. It too was a science-based law that directed the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to conduct the science-based environ-

mental review prior to a project moving forward.

President Obama and our Governor have bastardized those processes by fast-tracking projects that fit their energy “agenda” and by using those laws to stop projects that don’t – even if doing so jeopardizes our energy security.

• President Obama granted a 30-year exemption from the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to allow wind power companies to push his renewable energy agenda.

Those companies can now each kill up to 4,200 eagles over a 30-year period and that’s after we spent millions to help the bald eagle population recover so it could be removed from

being listed as an Endangered Species.

It seems that with the Left, the end justifies the means. If an inconvenient law gets in the way, ignore it. Does that also apply to you and me?

Then Audubon President and CEO David Yarnold reacted to President Obama’s ruling with the following statement: “Instead of balancing the need for conservation and renewable energy, (the Department of the Interior) wrote the wind industry a blank check. To essentially give power companies a 30year hunting license to kill eagles and other birds is unconscionable.

“I think we’re opening a Pandora’s Box that will kill millions of birds (also protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act) over the next 30 years, maybe tens of millions. I don’t understand why we’re making this devastating and senseless compromise.”

• Something has happened within Audubon since then as Audubon, initially founded as a bird-protection organization, is supporting the windpower project near Windsor, Broome County – much to the dismay of our local Audubon Chapter. Will we ever learn the political motivation behind that decision?

The explanation is that some undocument residents are driving anyway, and this at least ensures a subset of those will learn to drive to a sufficient level to obtain a license, thus making New York State’s roads safer.

But the contradiction is hard to get over: Persons in the U.S. illegally are being issued legal documents.

Further troubling, when the successful applicant goes to the paywindow computer to be guided through the payment process, at one point the question, “Are you a U.S. citizen?” appears on the screen.

If the applicant checks the “yes” box, his or her information is automatically forwarded to the Otsego County Board of Elections.

According to Mike Henrici, the county Democratic elections commissioner, all voter registrations are then sent to Albany for verifi-

cation. Plus, potential fines and jail sentences should deter fraudulent voting. Let’s hope for the best.

• Even more troubling are the “justice reforms” that, as Senator Seward notes on Page A4, will allow 90 percent of people arrested to go free.

Already, the New York Post reported the other day a suspect “sucker-punched” an officer and was freed without bail. More examples will no doubt be flowing forth in the weeks ahead.

Changes in how evidence is handled – for instance, requiring suspected cocaine or meth seized in drug arrests to be confirmed within 15 days; now, the testing can take months – will put many suspects, some facing serious charges, back on the street, and hinder how their cases are eventually resolved, if they can even be found and brought before the bar.

Add in the possibility of not just legalization, but muscular commercialization, of marijuana, and other measures – there are worri-

some clouds forming on New York State’s horizon.

• This is not to start the New Year on a down beat.

Swings between reform and rebalancing are part of not just U.S. history, but functioning democracies generally. Think “Peace, Love and Woodstock,” followed by the Reagan years.

To the degree any of the reforms are an overreach, they will be eventually corrected, although perhaps not in 2020.

Just as New York mirrored the federal government’s NEPA legislation with its SEQR law, our Governor is now following in President Obama’s footsteps.

He is using the SEQR process to fast-track renewable energy projects that are consistent with his “renewables” agenda and to stop projects, especially those associated with fossil fuels, that aren’t.

Is he putting New York’s energy security at risk by doing that?

In 1974, the U.S. relied upon OPEC for its energy and OPEC brought us to our knees by cutting off the supply.

Do we really want to repeat that situation by relying on China, Russia and the Congo for the materials used to make the lithium ion batteries needed to store the energy from wind and solar power?

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – before we drink the Kool Aid, we need to know what’s in it!

I believe it was Mr. Zagata’s fellow fabulist, the aforementioned Dick Downey, who recently linked the opioid crisis to lack of methane gas.

To link the tragic opioid cancer occurring in America regardless of whether there is methane available or not is reprehensible.

The opioid epidemic was caused by Big Pharma as recently shown by the “real” billions of dollars of settlements agreed to by some of the more egregious offenders. Ulster County, an area with ample access to methane gas, was recently named as the leading county in New York State for opioid-related fatalities. Of course, Big Pharma, like the Fossil Fuel Industry, throws millions of dollars into disinformation campaigns in an attempt to disguise their profit from poison business, one at the expense of individuals, the other at the expense of the planet.

I recall a conversation I had with Mr. Zagata a number of years ago in which I expressed surprise that (at the time) the DEC might support fracking.

I questioned how it was that the DEC tightly controlled the effluvia emanating from farming practices in order to prevent the contamination of waterways, but was willing to condone the rendering of millions of gallons of previously potable water owned by the public into permanently toxic waste.

The tiresome trope of people leaving New York

State due to lack of methane gas, with acknowledgement to Clemens, is an example of twisting stats to a pre-formed idea. Might I suggest that a large number of people leaving are simply part of the “boomer” effect?

Ever since the advent of air conditioning, northerners have been seduced by the charms of winter weather below the Mason-Dixon Line.

New York being one of our most populous states had/has one of the largest populations of boomers reaching retirement age. It has been a time-honored tradition that they move south long before the advent of fracking. Another factor causing migration is the total lack of modern up-to-date communication abilities throughout most of rural New York.

The linking of diminishing church attendance is at the “are you kidding me?” level. More likely, people have stepped away from the church after having become dismayed by so many wrapping themselves in a holy banner in the service of Mammon.

Yes Mr. Zagata, I include you. At a time of year when many celebrate the story of a child born to parents fleeing oppression and hiding in a primitive manger is upon us, your assertions do little to help and much to harm. To suggest that the adherents of this faith, the same ones who are descendants of people who suffered persecution for their beliefs, are not up to dealing with a lack of methane gas is laughable.

Unless of course, you are of the opinion that Mary and Joe would have been more comfortable in that manger if only they had a pipeline.

Don’t Harass Applicants Seeking Licenses Under NY State’s New ‘Green Light’ Law To the Editor: Prominently displayed next to each of three cashier window signs at the Otsego County Department of Motor Vehicle office in Oneonta that explain how the new “Green Light” Law will be implemented in Otsego County are signs proclaiming the phone number of the ICE Tip Line.

At the Cooperstown DMV office, there is an ICE Tip Line sign on the entrance door and there is another inside. This signage is suggesting that Otsego County residents doing business with DMV “spy” on others – OTHERS being the operative word – who are exercising their legal right to apply for a driver’s license.

New York State’s “Green Light” Law means that undocumented immigrants

can once again obtain drivers’ licenses, a right that they had until 2001.

They have to pass the same test that all residents must pass, rather than drive on our state’s roads unlicensed. No one in Otsego County, or any other county in New York, must face harassment when at the DMV. We call upon the Otsego County DMV to remove these intimidating signs immediately!

As Humanity Ignores Rules Of Nature, Bounteous Earth Can Run Out Of Gas To the Editor: So the fracking industry comes into town and uses a lot of clean water that then becomes unusable, tears up and down the roads with trucks, and drills for the gas. Then pipes it out of the county and sells it to? … and this will benefit the poor people, how?

Poor people don’t always own the land. Mike Zagata’s description of fracking left out a number of critical elements. One of which is the use of water.

Living around here it may be hard to believe that water is a finite element. It is more precious than gold. It is past time to start finding solutions to using less water and using it more intelligently.

That is another problem with fracking. It is not just the process, it’s the mindset.

Take, take, take. If we do not start thinking in terms of the cycles of nature and remain focused on the illusion that we can just keep taking from

nature to transform elements into our own fantasies and uses, we are going to end up starving on a dry wasteland.

At the beginning of industrialization, industrialists’ goals were to drive people out of the rural areas, away from farming into cities, in order to have workers for their factories. Then the corporations pushed for big farms in order to create monopolies so they could increase profits.

They totally ignored the cycles of nature. This took away the sense of independence and self-sufficiency from many people. The variety of foods that we used to consume was greatly reduced. This is part of the cause of our problems with poverty and poor foods that are lacking the nutritional elements and varieties of foods that keep us healthy and intelligent.

It is an outdated concept that businesses and corporations are our salvation. That

is not to say that some of it is not good. But we need to find a better balance between industrialization and the agrarian life style.

Instead of thinking about more money to solve problems, think about what is essential in sustaining life and build on that. More money is not an answer.

Creativity and ingenuity are needed.

We have some incredible resources in this area; if we learn to preserve them and enrich them, we will do away with poverty. If we look around here for solutions and not out there, we will have a better long-term gain.

The earth is a living organism that can supply humanity forever, but if we keep ignoring the rules of nature, we will be destroyed along with all the other species we have already destroyed.

“When we opened in December 2013, Harry and Barb Martin were our first customers,” said Egan. “Harry’s mom, Rhoda Martin, was turning 99 that year, and he ordered some pepperoni pizza for her.”

Egan made a bet with him: If she celebrated her 105th birthday at Pizza 23 West, the pizzeria would cater the whole thing free.

“The only catch was she had to come in here on her own,” he said. “No ordering it and taking it to her.”

As each year passed, the centenarian-plus ordered a pepperoni pizza for her birthday, and this November, Harry came in to make plans for the party.

In high school, Jack got into writing poetry and short stories, and needed a musical outlet more conducive to his newfound passion.

“I picked up a guitar and taught myself a few chords,” he said. “Then I taught myself a few songs, like John Fullbright’s ‘Unlocked Doors.’”

Jack was born in Cooperstown and lived here until he was 8 years old, when his father, a CGP graduate then working for the Baseball Hall of Fame, accepted the top job at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“We come back every summer and Christmas,” said Jack.

In Cleveland, he met Chris Allen, of the band Falling Stars.

“He knew I’d been learning some songs, so he called me up and asked me to play one,” said Jack.

“I played him a couple covers, and then he said, ‘Do you have any originals?’”

He only had pieces right then, but got to work finishing some original compositions “And the next time I saw him, he was in the studio recording my song!”

With Falling Stars, Jack recorded “I Get Lost” and “Song For You” and “Hold On To Me” at Peppermint Studios, and released a video for “No One Listens” on YouTube. “Just two weeks ago, we heard my song ‘No One Listens’ on The Summit, the local radio station in Akron,” he said.

“A big chunk of that is local singer-songwriters,” said Greg.

“They can play a few covers, but we want all originals, no tribute or party bands. And I told him that Lisa Vinciquerra – the Hall’s production manager – has to book him!”

was on before him!” said Greg.

The Hall also hosted the Catch Meaning Festival on its grounds, and Jack was booked without having to go through Vinciquerra.

“He knew some of the people involved,” said Greg. “They asked him to play, and I didn’t even know about it!”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is set to announce its 2020 Induction Class, and celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. “We want to make every day feel like a festival,” said Greg. “It’s not a museum about yesterday, it’s alive today.”

They’ll once again have a summer series, and Jack hopes to play, as well as look into internship possibilities at the Hall. “I want him to see that songwriters are regular people who walk among us,” said Greg. “Whether they do it for a living or if performing is their day job, it’s a great way to express yourself.”

Jack’s songs are on Apple Music, Spotify and his website, JackHarrisSongs.com, and he is hoping to get back in the studio.

“My next step is finding someone to work with on an album project,” he said. “I’ve been doing a lot of writing the past few months.”

On Nov. 16, five generations of the Martin family gathered at the restaurant to dine on 20 pizzas — including their special “Grandma” pizza, made with smashed tomatoes, garlic and fresh basil – “the way they make

it in Italy,” said Egan.

“We got her two cakes, and when I walked the first one over to her, she said, ‘I can’t cut this,’” said Trimble. “I told her I’d cut it for her, and when everyone was done taking pictures, I went to take it back to the kitchen – and she said, ‘Wait, don’t I get any?’ She’s so funny.”

At 105, Rhoda is believed to be the oldest resident of Otsego County. Born Nov.

21, 1914, in Rhode Island to parents who immigrated from England and Italy, she moved to Hell Hollow Road in 1957 to the home where she raised eight children and still resides independently.

“She lived through the Depression, two world wars, Vietnam, so many tough times,” said Egan. “She’s seen so much in her lifetime, and she’s such a nice lady.”

“She told us that she distinctly remembers the Hurricane of 1938 in Connecticut!” said Trimble.

(Among other things, on landfall near New Haven it destroyed Katherine Hepburn’s summer home at Old Saybrook.)

Egan and Trimble opened the pizzeria Dec. 22, 2013, after moving up from The Bronx. “We had a pizzeria in Midtown, but it cost me

$550 to park my car,” he said. “My lease was coming up, so we sold the pizzeria and moved up here.”

They took over the former Long Island Pizzeria, which had been Millie’s before that. Trimble painted the walls in between phone calls and little by little, Long Island turned into Pizza 23 West.

“My delivery guy thought I was crazy,” he said. “But he came back six months later and we had doubled our business.”

With its proximity to Cooperstown All-Star Village, it’s popular with baseball teams and families, and in the winter it’s the go-to spot for West Oneontans in need of pizza and wings for the game, as well as Italian specialties and subs.

And on her actual birthday, Nov. 21, Rhoda came in and ordered another pepperoni pizza. “I told her I’ll make her one every year on her birthday,” he said. “And when she turns 110, I’ll throw her another party.”

“Chuck conducted for 45 years,” said Williams.

“It’s been very different for the orchestra, having three conductors this season, but we felt that Maciej was the best fit. We believe he will transition beautifully and bring his own essence to the symphony.”

In November, Maciej conducted “The Fairy Tale,” the third and final in the conductor search series. Finalists Silas Huff conducting “The Firebird” in September and Carolyn Watson, “The Elements” in October.

The three finalists were whittled down from 73 applicants and six semifinalists, then the search committee took surveys from both the musicians and the audience.

“The audience liked all of the conductors,” said Williams. “And what we really wanted to know is if they enjoyed the concert and if they would be interested in attending the next season.

Meanwhile, Brockway, who will be sworn in on Jan. 2, is seeking to line up other board members behind the idea. So far, only one other Upstate county – Wyoming, south of Batavia – is considering a “sanctuary” policy.

White took action after learning all but six counties in Virginia have or plan to declare themselves “sanctuaries,” exempt from guncontrol laws.

The “sanctuary” movement there erupted after Gov. Ralph Northam, with the support of a newly elected Democratic General Assembly, vowed to toughen gun laws.

“In just a matter of days, almost the entire state became a Second Amendment sanctuary,” White said.

The drive picks up on “sanctuary cities” movement, where 560 cities, counties and states nationally have declared they will not cooperate with the federal government in enforcing immigration laws.

Where White and others say Virginia may decide to seize legally owned guns, members of the new Virginia majority have been talking about “commonsense gun legislation.”

To the south of Oneonta, a “Delaware County 2A Sanctuary” Facebook page was created Dec. 20, and White heard about it from relatives there.

He spoke with T.J. Conant, who launched the Delaware page. “They have gained 1,939 members since December 20,” he was told.

“It’s been absolutely taking off there.”

He said, “Nobody in Otsego County was doing it, so I said I would be willing to get it off the ground.”

With Conant’s help, the Oneontan launched the

Otsego County page, two days before Christmas.

Tuesday, Dec. 31, membership rose from 783 in the morning to 826 in the afternoon.

“I’m amazed at the amount of support,” said White.

“I would like to go to the county board with 6,000 signatures minimum,” he continued. “That’s 1 percent of the county population.

The more signatures we get, the easier it will be to bring it in front of the county board and to say that this is what the people want.”

Sportman Adventures’ owner William Decker Jr. thinks “it’s a really good idea to keep (the) political agenda in check. This is something that goes back hundreds of years to our Constitutional rights, so we need to preserve it,” he said.

“We don’t have a lot of signatures yet, but we’ve talked to a lot of people and they’re excited about it,” he said. “There is strength in numbers. If other people make their voice heard, it will keep these ridiculous laws in check.”

For his part, Brockway is contacting “fish and game,

and rod and gun clubs. We are going to get petitions out to as many people as possible to get signatures. If you have several thousand signatures you will get other people on the board to listen. It will take a group effort.”

Can he get his county board colleagues to pass the resolution? “I think it will depend on the number of petitions we have and how we present it. I know that a couple of representatives became part of the group.

It’s a start,” he said.

Kaleb White sees the responses to date as coming from frustration that began with passage of the state’s Safe Act in January 2013 after the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut.

“It’s frustrating trying to get a handgun or any sort of rifle other than a bolt action in New York. We’re not looking for absolutely no gun control or gun laws, we just want it to be more streamlined. We don’t want to jump through hundreds of hoops and spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on permits or training just to protect ourselves.”

Four musicians sat on the search committee, who was tasked with compiling both sets of surveys and

delivering a list of strengths and weaknesses to the board, who made the final decision.

In addition to the surveys, the candidates were introduced to members of the community, including presidents of Hartwick

College and SUNY Oneonta and the Glimmerglass Festival, as well as asked to put together a budget for their concert season. “The symphony has to remain strong financially or there won’t be a symphony,” said Williams. “Maciej was the only candidate to come in on budget.”

Maciej will still need to get a visa before he can officially get the job; until then, he is the designee.

He will make his first formal appearance at the CSO’s annual Cabaret Concert on Saturday, March 14, which will also feature the annual Guest Conductor Competition and a performance by Mandy Harvey, a deaf jazz singer who finished fourth on “America’s Got Talent” in 2017.

“He is already excited and has started working with Thomas Wolfe to put things in place for that concert,” said Williams.

“He hasn’t selected his pieces yet, but he’ll also be working with Mandy to help pick her pieces.”

“I’m happy we’ve come to the conclusion,” said Williams. “We’re so fortunate that things worked out. so well.”

The immediate plan to help alleviate the parking crunch is a new surface parking lot on Riverside Drive, the cul de sac at Walnut and Susquehanna.

(The plan replaced a parking garage to be built into the hillside, which proved too expensive.)

Flyte briefed the Village Board on plans at its December meeting on the 29th, but a final step before construction can begin is a public hearing. Community members will have a chance to comment at a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, the trustees next meeting.

“They are doing everything by the book,” said Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch.

“I think there is a level of support, in that Cooperstown generally needs a lot of parking,” Flyte said. The trustees “recognize we are a major contributor to the community, but it all comes down to their vote in the end.

“We have to convince not only them, but the community as well,” he said.

At Bassett, parking for patients is a daily struggle,

Flyte said.

“We had a fellow who called. He was crying because he couldn’t find a place to park and his wife was dying. A staff member had to run out and park his car for him while he went inside. These types of situations happen daily, if not several times per day.”

The would-be Riverside Drive parking lot is close enough that it might just be the solution, adding 150 spaces.

“It’s close to the hospital and underutilized,” he said.

“This being our property, it’s a natural place for something like this to exist.”

Lots One and Two, in front and behind the Clinic building at the end of River Street “routinely fill with outpatients.” Lot Three, down the hill by the Susquehanna “is used somewhat by patients now, and includes a shuttle. It’s been pretty successful and we want to expand that service,” said Flyte.

Additionally, as many of 41 percent of Bassett’s patients are over the age of 65.

“We have a lot of elderly people here,” said Flyte.

The plans for the new parking lot include a shuttle, which would help

senior patients who might have trouble walking long distances.

“We’re a hospital. We want to make it easier for folks to seek medical services,” said Flyte.

“People like the shuttle service, it brings them right to the front door.”

Flyte began working on the project over two years ago with Chazen Companies, an engineering consultant firm with offices in Glens Falls, Troy, and Poughkeepsie, “looking at options and refining this plan to make it useful, attractive, and serviceable,” he said.

As part of the planning process, Flyte invited neighbors of the hospital to provide input as well.

“We reached out to our neighbors and even had a meeting here at the hospital,” he said. “Homes are precious in this community. We value them.”

Located as it is near the Susquehanna River, the state Department of Environmental Conservation must also issues permits, and a DEC contractor was drilling test bores earlier this week. Flyte expresses confidence no issues will be found.
