Dellephene F. Woodruff, 90; Widow Of Owen D. Young Principal VAN HORNESVILLE – Dellephene Ferguson Woodruff, 90, widow of a former Owen D. Young Central School supervising principal, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Folts Home, Herkimer. Born July 12, 1922, in Richfield Springs, she was the daughter of Jessie and Luther Ferguson. As a child, she helped with her mother’s laundry business, sold flowers on the steps of the spa resort hotels and frequented the local movie theater.
She graduated from Richfield Springs High School with honors, and attended Syracuse Dellephene University. Woodruff Completing secretarial training, she worked for architect Myron Jordan and for the Richfield Springs School District. On her 30th birthday, she married Robert B. Wood-
ruff, the Owen D. Young administrator, beginning a new life with her husband and his three sons. For the next six decades, she was deeply involved in the Van Hornesville community, including the United Methodist Church, where she played organ, taught Sunday school classes, produced monthly newsletters and served as secretary and officer of many committees. She learned to knit, crochet and sew, which enabled her to make clothing for herself and her daughter,
slipcovers for the principal’s house, hats and mittens for Neighborhood Center and gifts for friends. She was a 4-H leader, too. She enjoyed bookkeeping and secretarial work, which she practiced as treasurer for the Van Hornesville Cemetery Association and other organizations. During their retirement, Bob and Dellephene embraced square-dancing, joining the Doubleday Dancers of Cooperstown and serving as co-presidents. They travelled extensively, spending
winters in Florida. Bob Woodruff predeceased his wife in 1995. Survivors include their sons, Alan “Spike” Woodruff of Woodgate, Neil “Butch” Woodruff and his wife, Teresa, and son, William, of Virginia, and Norman “Chuck” Woodruff and his wife, Diane, and sons, Brendan and Corbin of Mohawk; daughter Cathy Woodruff and her husband, Mike Goodwin of Niskayuna; two nieces, Jane Blair and Sue Burchard, and their families. 2 -5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Van Hornesville United Methodist Church; interment will follow in Van Hornesville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Van Hornesville Volunteer Fire Department, Van Hornesville United Methodist Church or the Robert B. Woodruff Outdoor Learning Center, care of the Van Hornesville Community Corp.
Dick O’Hara, 79; Retired State Trooper OTEGO — Richard J. “Dick” O’Hara, 79, a retired state trooper, passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012, at home in Otego with his family by his side. He was born Jan. 16, 1933, in Otego, the son of James and Ellen (Kelly) O’Hara. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He married Shirley Alexander on Feb. 12, 1955. She predeceased him on Sept. 11, 1986. He then married Ellen Sanford in December 1989. Dick spent 21 years in the state police, at Troop F, then
at Troop C, where he retired as an investigator in 1981. He also worked for the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department until 1987. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Oneonta Elks Club, and the Oneonta American Legion. In addition to his wife Ellen, he is survived by daughter Kim, her husband Michael, and his grandson, Ryan Carson, all of Otego; also nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his seven brothers, Vincent, James, Thomas, Ambrose, Patrick, Carl and John
“Jack.” Calling hours were planned 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home, with the Rev. John P. Rosson, officiating. Interment with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Ouleout Valley Cemetery, Franklin. Mary Ellen Geissinger, 79; Worked At Meadows ONEONTA – Mary Ellen Geissinger, 79, who worked for 20 years in The Meadows Nursing Home’s dietary department, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at Bassett Hospital. She was born Feb. 13, 1933, in Petersburg, Pa., the daughter of Earl and Elsie Genevieve (Lightner) Scott. Mary Ellen married Richard S. Geissinger on Oct. 14, 1952, in Huntingdon, Pa. In addition to her husband
of 60 years, she is survived by her children, Debra and Bruce Warner of Akron, Ohio, Richard and Danielle Geissinger of Laurens, and Kim Lindberg of Middlefield; grandchildren, John Lindberg Jr., Justin (Megan) Lindberg and Alexandria Geissinger; a great-granddaughter, Lillian “Izzy” Lindberg; her siblings, Louise Sausser, Naomi “Nome” Weaver, Wilmer Scott, Elmer Scott, Bill Scott and
Patricia Weyer; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and siblings Martha, Wilber “Sonny,” Cloyd and Gertrude Scott. Calling hours are 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Mel Farmer, officiating. Interment will take place in Pennsylvania.
Joshua Earle, 26; Raised In Hartwick, Bradenton, Fla. HARTWICK – Joshua M. Earle, 26, born in Cooperstown and raised in Hartwick and Bradenton, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Joshua was born at Bassett Hospital on Sept. 12, 1986, the son of Michael and Jacqueline (Steere) Earle. He graduated from
Bayshore High School in Bradenton, Fla., in 2005. Joshua was working for Patriot Flooring Specialist, Orlando, Fla. Survivors include his son, Cayden Joshua Earle of Bradenton, Fla.; his father, Michael Earle; and his paternal grandmother, Patricia Hodge of Easley, S.C. He is also survived by many
aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Jacqueline Earle; his maternal grandmother, Sis Steere; and maternal grandfather, Nelson Steere. A memorial service will be held in Hartwick in the spring for Joshua and his mother, Jacqueline.
