nly apocalyptic TV shows had prepared Seymour Miles for what he saw when he volunteered to help in Brooklyn after Hurricane Sandy.

“It was like the ‘Walking Dead’,” he said. “It was sad. These people went two weeks without power. I can’t imagine going two days.”

“It smelled really bad,” added Thomas Hamilton. “There were no street lamps, cars were flooded, basements were flooded to the top.”

t was one of Rabbit Goody’s coats that almost broke Tom Hanks. “It was a double-cloth twill weave from a 1929 pattern,” she recalled. “It weighed 32 pounds. There was a scene in ‘Road to Perdition’ where he was dripping wet, and it was too much for him.”

Goody hosted “Thistle Hill Goes to the

Movies,” a retrospective lecture on the fabrics she’s woven for film and television on Saturday, Nov. 15, to a packed studio in her Thistle Hill Weavers, located on a usually quiet country lane near Route 20.

That wasn’t the only issue in the “Road to Perdition” costume department. “We made fabric for Tom Hanks’ suit eight times,” she said. “They kept saying, ‘We don’t need any more of it.’ And then, a week later, ‘We need more of it.’”

That same weave was used in “Master and Commander” with Russell Crowe and “John Adams” with Paul Giamatti. “‘John Adams’ was our most accurate project,” she said. “You name it, we made it – blankets, upholstery, clothing for all the principals, a riding coat for Jefferson and fabric for a wingback chair.”

Clicking to a close-up slide, Goody – formerly a scholar with The Farmers’ Museum who got into the movie business in 1995 with Demi Moore’s “Scarlet Letter” – pointed out “the ace up her sleeve” that makes her fabrics unique. “We make it look irregular rather than machine made,” she said. “You don’t notice it,

By studying vintage fabrics, Goody began to recognize subtle patterns, often invisible to the naked eye. For “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” she plied together one strand of yellow and one strand of black into the Scottish weave. “It gives the fabric depth and matches what was being done in Scotland at that time.”

who ever gave us feedback,” she said. “He really liked what we did in ‘There Will Be Blood,’ and that was a good thing.”

She got a call from an assistant, who asked her if she could make the shawl and how much it would cost. The caller then hung up. “They didn’t tell me how many stripes, what color it was – they didn’t say anything.”

Dreamworks wouldn’t pay for her to examine the original at the Smithsonian, and it was too fragile to unfold for better photos. She made the first-hand samples from a single picture, and was told that it had “way too many” stripes for Day-Lewis’ tastes. “Apparently, he

gets to make that decision,” she said.

When she finally made a sample he liked and completed the shawl, she was “a little horrified” to see that the costume designers had overdyed it black.

Though Goody’s rugs and upholstery has appeared in films like “Christmas With the Kranks,” she was not asked to make the rugs or set dressings for “Lincoln.”

“Frankly, I didn’t need that kind of pressure,” she said.

In addition to upholstery, rugs and clothing fabric, Goody also got a job weaving willow and grapevine baskets for “Noah” when the production company’s basket weaver suddenly quit.

And even her overruns and extras find their way onto the screen. “The immigrants in ‘A Winter’s Tale’ – currently filming in Brooklyn – have bundles of them strapped to their back as they come into Ellis Island.”

And despite the deadlines and the prima donnas, Goody, who has been written up in Smithsonian magazine, among other publications, loves her work.

“There’s something about the fame of doing it,” she said. “It’s very cool.”

“We’re all about boots on the ground,” said First Sgt. Karl Heidenreich. “And we really busted our buttons.

We aren’t just a company of the eight or nine who went down. We were only limited by how many the bus could hold.”

When they arrived in Brooklyn, several cadets were assigned to search and rescue in an 18-story apartment complex. “The department of housing told us we couldn’t go in without military or police escorts,” said Heidenreich. “But then they saw we were military, and they said, ‘You’re taking us in’!”

Inside, the three teams of cadets were shocked at what they found. “They were elderly, these people had no food, no water, they had gone to the bathroom on themselves,” said Miles.

“Without power, they couldn’t get down to evacuate. They couldn’t walk down 18 flights of stairs.”

Thomas found a diabetic man in one apartment who hadn’t eaten or had anything to drink in 10 days. “Some needs were so great, we

filled them immediately,” he said. “People had kids, needed diapers, some were sick. There were doctors that volunteered, and we got them in there.”

The building was freezing cold, and Heidenreich estimated the cadets climbed 150 flights of stairs each. “It was fun for us, but for them, it was hard,” said Thomas.

Others were in charge in distributing food and supplies out of a community center, and some delivered hot meals from FEMA. And they took help where they could find it. “One little 10year-old boy showed us the buildings where there were elderly people,” said Miles.

“He told his mom he was with the Army guys.”

“I deputized him for one day,” said Heidenreich.

The operation was not the first flood mission the cadets undertook. They did two missions in Margaretville and one in Fleishmanns after Hurricane Irene, which gave them a stronger sense of what supplies and skills were needed.

“You come back a different person,” added Heidenreich. “You get through that one day and you know you could have gotten through multiple days. You learn what you are really capable of.”

IN MEMORIAM Warren W. Richards, 94; Career-Long Union Officer Helped Start SFCU In 1940s UNADILLA – Warren W. Richards, 94, who was involved in founding the Sidney Federal Credit Union in the 1940s, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at Fox Nursing Home.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1918, in Oneonta, the son of Carlton and Lula (Wilson) Richards. Warren

married the former Verna Girard on Nov. 7, 1941, in Oneonta. She died on July 11, 2004.

A 1939 graduate of Albany Business College, he was a machinist for Amphenol (Bendix) in Sidney for 42 years and held every position, but president, in the International Association of Machin-

ists, Local 1529, where he was a member for 40 years. He was also a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Unadilla.

He is survived by his daughters; Daughn and Dennis Darlin of Wells Bridge, Susan Kuss of Saratoga Springs, Margaret (Peggy) and William Lisenby of San

Antonio, Texas, Gloria Richards of Ithaca, Robin and David Lewis of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Mary Lynn and Scott Henchey of Unadilla; brother and sister-in law Ernest and Marie Girard of Brant Lake; and a sister-in-law Angie Richards of Oneonta.

Alfred G. Hubbard, 87; Decorated WWII Veteran Spent More Than 50 Years As Volunteer Fireman ONEONTA – Alfred G. (Ted) Hubbard, 87, a decorated World War II veteran and volunteer firefighters for more than a half-century, died Saturday Dec. 15, 2012, at Fox Hospital.

He was born in Bay Shore, L.I., on Feb. 15, 1925, the son Alfred R and Marion (Brow) Hubbard.

He married Olga C. Sturek on Aug. 6, 1973, in Lindenhurst, L.I. He had three sons from his first marriage, to Ann Dinga in 1946, which ended in divorce after 25 years.

In the Navy in 1942-46, he served in the Pacific Theater aboard the “Fighting

Lady” – the USS Yorktown CV-10, now in a museum in Patriots Point, S.C. He was awarded a commendation for bravery while the ship was under attack by the Japanese, and also received the state’s Conspicuous Service Award for heroism.

He moved Upstate in 1973, to Mundale, Walton and then to his present address in the Town of Davenport.

A volunteer fireman for more than 50 years, he was 40th man in the West Islip Fire Department and an honorary member of the Walton Fire Department.

He also was a firearms safety instructor for over 40 years.

He was a mechanic for Sun Oil Co. in Oceanside, L.I., for many years and for S.J. Bailey & Sons as a night supervisor for 17.

He was with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years, until ill health forced him to resign.

Ted was a member of the Delhi American Legion Post, and a life member of VFW Post 1206, Oneonta, the USS Yorktown Association, and the NRA. In addition to his wife, Olga, survivors include three sons, Alfred “Butch”

(Rose) Hubbard of Oneonta, Walter A. Hubbard of Salisbury, N.C., Ted R. (Rose) Hubbard of Maryland and a daughter, Donna Rachiele of Oneonta. Also, nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, and a brother, Walter, of Corinth, Texas.

The funeral was planned at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Rockwell officiating.

Burial followed at Ouleout Valley Cemetery.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Amanda Robinson, 87; 10 Grandchildren Survive ONEONTA – Amanda Robinson, 87, a resident of Nader Towers for nearly a decade, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Fox Hospital.

She was born in Brooklyn on April 2, 1925, the daughter of Henry and Caroline (Reiderer) Klemm. She married Julian M. Robinson on Feb. 3, 1946, in Queens, and he passed away on Aug. 9, 1994.

Amanda and her family lived in Ozone Park, Queens, for many years before moving to Milford and later Davenport. For the past nine years Amanda enjoyed being a resident of Nader Towers where she had many friends and spent evenings playing bingo and cards.

Amanda was a homemaker and had also worked for Astrocom and the Charlotte Valley Central School. She shared her husband’s passion for harness racing. She enjoyed working in the paddock, preparing the horses

for races at Vernon Downs and Monticello Raceway.

Amanda loved making crafts, crocheting Amanda Robinson and knitting.

Sundays at “the farm” were always happy times for her family.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Milford American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1566.

She is survived by her children, Catherine and husband Howard Miller of Milford, James and wife, Judi Robinson, Richland, WA, Gerard (Jerry) and wife Diane Robinson of Milford, Caroline and husband Mark Finne of Davenport, her son-in-law, Joseph Ballard of Davenport.

She was born in Silesia, Germany, on Jan. 4, 1941, the daughter of Conrad and Elfriede Marschall.

Prior to moving to Poughkeepsie, she lived in Oneonta. She was an art and elementary school teacher for the City of Oneonta School System in Oneonta.

Dr. Yong-Min Chi, 82; Met Wife While Resident At Bassett Hospital COOPERSTOWN – Dr. Yong-Min Chi, a one-time resident at Bassett Hospital who overcame a harsh boyhood in South Korean to obtained a medical degree in the U.S., died Saturday, Dec. 8, at his home in Cummaquid, Mass. He was 82.

Dr. Chi was born in Korea in 1930 to ChangIl Chi and Bong-Yi Choi,

the fourth of nine children and eldest son. As a boy during the Japanese occupation of his homeland Dr. Chi during world War II, he was forced, working barefoot, to help build airfields.

When the Korean War began, his father was shot trying to protect the family’s property.

He was a captain in the South Korean army and attended Seoul National University. Moving to the U.S. in 1954, he studied at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and graduated from Case Western Reserve

University’s School of Medicine.

Admitted to Columbia University’s medical residency program in 1963, he was assigned to Bassett Hospital, where he met Mary Elizabeth Clark, whom he married in 1967.

They started Dr. Chi’s medical practice in Delhi, and lived briefly in Pica-

Alice Pfeuffer, 72; Owned Augur’s Bookstore For 7 Years MOUNT VISION – Alice Rita Pfeuffer, 72, the former owner of Augur’s Bookstore in Cooperstown, died Thursday, Dec. 13, in Bassett Hospital.

She was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Yaphank, the daughter of Robert J. and Alice H. (Rutkowski) Walsh; and granddaughter of Herman and Eleanor Gerard of Laurens.

She married Gustav (Gus) Pfeuffer on July 10, 1959, in Teaneck, N.J.

Alice graduated from Bergen Technical Vocational High School as a licensed beautician. She continued in this career until her oldest daughter was born and then became the homemaker.

In 1976, the family moved to Mount Vision from Ridgefield Park, N.J. Alice and her husband, Gus, started the Hill Top Construction Co., which they ran until 2005.

In 1990, Alice and Gus purchased Augur’s, the land-

mark bookstore at Pioneer and Main, which she and her daughter Teresa ran until 1998.

Alice enjoyed camping, traveling, NASCAR and tractor pulls. She was famous for her cream puffs made with duck eggs.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Teresa Convis and her husband, Scott, and Wendy Tennant and her husband, Mike; grandchildren Caitlin and Amber Marble,

and Kristopher Convis; a sister, a brother- and sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday, Dec. 17, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. Paul Messner officiating. Interment was in the Mount Vision Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart/Stroke Association, Fox Care or Hartwick Emergency Squad.

Erwina ‘Winnie’ Edgett, 88; Farmed In Hartwick HARTWICK – Erwina “Winnie” (Manley) Edgett, 88, a lifelong Hartwick resident, died Monday, Dec. 10, at Fox Nursing Home following a brief illness.

Born Aug. 25, 1924, Winnie was raised in Hartwick and spent her adult life managing a small farm on Weeks Road.

She was the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Richards) Manley. In 1952, she married Francis Ira Edgett who predeceased her in 1966.

Winnie was a devoted sister, surrogate mother and

survivors include two daughters and three sons, and eight siblings.

He was memorialized at a private ceremony at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
