hen Jerry Reed inherited his family’s photo albums and scrapbooks from his parents, Mary Washburn and Robert Reed, he didn’t realize he’d also be inheriting generations of mysteries.

“My great-grandmothers had photo albums with pictures of all their friends,” he said. “I’ve ID’d all the people I know, now my goal is to make sure those other pictures get back to their families.”

John S. Kidder, a Civil War soldier of the 121st Regiment, who lived in Laurens.

Lon Richmond and his wife, labeled on the back of the photo only as “Mrs. Richmond,� owned the Laurens Hotel, which burned in 1904, taking Kidder’s carriage shop with it. “I think Mr. Richmond went on to have a fruit company in New York City,� he said. “You go by who the photographers were,� he said. “They either lived in Oneonta, Cooperstown or nearby, so that people didn’t have to travel that far for a picture.�

The photos in his collection are in several formats, ranging from 4- by 6-inch portraits to “Cartes de Visite,� small calling-card photographs the size of a trading card. There’s a pair of Carrie Wilber Hallock and her husband, David Hallock. “I would guess she’s related to the Wilber Park, Wilber National Bank family,� he said.

In addition to his own collection, he’s also helping families find ephemera from their own pasts. “I found a marriage certificate from Fly Creek on ebay for James F. Adsit to Lydia Benedict in 1853,� he said. “I passed the information along to Jane Adsit in Cooperstown and it turns out, it’s her great-grandfather, and that she had a letter from him written in 1864.�

“Francesca called us back a few weeks later and said, ‘sure’!” said Naomi. “If it weren’t for my brother, I wouldn’t be in this show.”

In “The Lion,” Henry played the Angel, tasked with deciding which animal gets the honor of carrying Mary to Bethlehem to give birth to Jesus. After debating – in song, of course – between the lion, the unicorn and the donkey, he finally makes his decision.

“I pick the donkey,” he said. “The lion and the unicorn were all fancy, so everyone thought they would win. But the donkey could get the job done.”

Naomi sings in the children’s chorus, dressing up as a sheep to sing “Baa Baa” with the unicorn and alongside the Lion in Henry’s favorite number, “The Lion.”

“We rehearsed six hours a day,” said Henry. “They were long, but we got a lot of work done.”

“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s sometimes hard work,” said Naomi. “When you move wrong or sing wrong, then it’s not so fun.”

And it’s work that paid off. Anne Midgette of the Washington Post called his performance “Refreshingly natural,” and said “He just about stole the show.”

“The Lion, the Unicorn and Me” premiered Friday, Dec. 13, at the Terrace Theater. With four performances left this weekend, Wager will be home for Christmas.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “But it’s tiring after awhile.”

IN MEMORIAM Lydia Louise Armstrong, 77; ‘Nana’ Ran Daycare Center

Lois Muehl, 87; Dairy Farmer Enjoyed Cooking For Crowds ONEONTA – Lois J. Muehl, 87, who operated a dairy farm in Emmons with her late husband, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at the Albany Medical Center after a brief illness.

Most recently, she had lived at The Plains at Parish Homestead.

Lois was born on April 15, 1926, in Cobleskill, the daughter of the late John and Leonia (Walker) Jennings. She married Michael J. Muehl on June 8, 1946.

In 1952-79, Mike and Lois farmed in Emmons while raising six children.

In addition to her farming duties, she was a waitress at Brooks’ House of Bar-

B-Q for 26 years.

Lois had many interests, including quilting, reading, knitting and sewing.

She was a Lois Muehl wonderful baker and cook who welcomed everyone to her table; no one left hungry.

A member of St. Mary’s Church, she served on the bereavement committee. In her younger years she was active in the PTA. In addition to her husband of 67 years, now residing

at The Plains, survivors include her children, Michael Linda Borfitz and husband Harmon, of The Villages, Sumter County, Florida, Andrea Anne Mack and husband Barry, of Plattsburgh, Mark Muehl and wife Priscilla, of Fairborn, Ohio, Drue Muehl and wife Kathy, of Millport, Chemung County, Alex Muehl and wife Annmarie, of Harpursville, and Gretchen Louise Reamy and husband Christopher, of Centreville, Va. Also, 16 grandchildren, six great grandchildren; brother, Henry Haslun, Jr. and wife Carol, of Middleburgh, and several nieces

and nephews.

Lois was predeceased by her parents, her brother George Jennings and her step-father, Henry Haslun, Sr. A funeral mass was Monday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary’s, followed by interment in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, 25 River Street, Oneonta, NY 13820 or the Catskill Area Hospice, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Joseph A. Chicorelli, 86; D&H Retiree Owned Race Horses

ONEONTA – Joseph A. Chicorelli, 86, a World War II Army veteran and D&H retiree, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Fox Hospital.

He was born on July 4, 1927, in Oneonta, son of Eugenio and Alessandra (Pallotiolo) Chicorelli. He married Nancy Mans on Aug. 26, 1952; she predeceased him on Aug. 23, 1980.

Returning from World War II, he worked for LaMonica Enterprises before joining the Delaware & Hudson in 1960; he retired in 1989 after 29 years.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Sixth Ward Athletic Club and the VFW. He was an avid bowler, and over the years he owned race horses.

He is survived by his children, Theresa Schaffer and husband, Jeffrey, of Cairo, Andrea Crimmins and her husband, David, of

Palenville, Green County, and Maria Struble and her husband, Karl, of Oneonta; his grandchildren, Joseph Chicorelli and his fiancé, Ashley Wolcott, Brittany Westcott, Bekka Struble, Kristina Bove and her husband, Vince, and Katherine Nelligan and her husband, Josh; three great grandchildren Noah Chicorelli, Myra Bove and Easton Nelligan.

His brothers and sisters, Anthony Chicorelli of Maryland, and Raffaela Chicorelli, Mary LeoGrande, and John Chicorelli and his wife, Nancy, all of

Oneonta, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, and a brother-in-law, Maurice Mans and his wife, Janice, of Churchtown, Columbia County.

He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Alexander Chicorelli.

OBITUARIES Carl Joseph Peplinski Jr., 81; Korea Vet Leaves 12 Children RICHFIELD SPRINGS – Carl Joseph Peplinski Jr., 81, a Korean veteran who was born and lived in Richfield Springs, passed away from stroke-related complications on Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, in DeBary, Fla., where he had retired.

He was born Sept. 4, 1932, to parents, Carl and Staphie Peplinski, Following graduation, he served in the Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Carl married the love of his life, Joyce Marie, in 1983.

He retired in 1997 when The Chi-

cago Pneumatic Co., East Utica, where he worked, closed. He moved to Florida that same year.

He enjoyed bowling, playing cards, board games, trips to the casino, traveling and seeing the trees change colors during the fall.

He was an active member in the American Legion and Moose Lodge.

He is survived by son Laine Madison and his girlfriend, Mindy; daughter Tara Taylor and her husband, Jeff; son Carl (Chip) Peplinski III; daughter Leslie Viens and her husband, Larry; son West Peplinski, and daughter Tan-

ya Wathey and her husband, Joseph.

Other survivors include his stepchildren, David Madison, Jennifer Simonds, Dianne Stringer, Robert Madison, Jeffrey Madison, Debra Conrad and their spouses; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Carl was predeceased by his parents, two sons and his loving wife.

A dual service for Carl and Joyce will be held in Richfield Springs in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the American Diabetes Association in Carl’s name.

Gary Alvin Reeves, 68; Lived in Roseboom for 24 years ROSEBOOM – Gary Alvin Reeves, 68, who moved to Roseboom in the late 80s, passed away Dec. 13, 2013, at Bassett Hospital, with his family at his side.

Gary was born March 20, 1945, to Alvin and Gertrude Reeves and grew up on Shelter Island. He moved to Roseboom with his wife and son in 1989.

Gary cherished his friends and family with their generosities – some near that touched his life almost daily and some far that he spoke of with love and many, many good memories.

He is survived by his mother, Gertrude of Shelter Island; son, Norman and daughter-in-law, Melody; granddaughters, Allison

and Emily; brother, James and sister-in-law, Barbara and their families; brother, Roland and sister-in-law, Maureen and their families; sister, Sherri; and his faithful cat, Gypsy.

He is predeceased by his father, Alvin.

Calling hours will be 10 a.m.– noon on Thursday, Dec. 19, with a memorial

service following at Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Cherry Valley.

A memorial service will also be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, at Shelter Island Fire Department, Route 114, Shelter Island.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Nancy C. Peters, 61; Retiree From Bassett Loved Animals EXETER – Nancy C. Peters, 61, of the Town of Exeter, a career-long Bassett Hospital employee, died unexpectedly at her home on County Highway 16 on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013.

Born May 29, 1952, at Bassett, Nancy was the daughter of Lyle U. and Eleanor (Hubbard) Reynolds of Cooperstown. She graduated from Cooperstown Central School, Class of 1970, and within a month began working at Bassett.

An accredited medical coder, she retired in May. Nancy is survived by her husband William “Bill” Peters, son Brett Utter and his significant other, Heather Minnich of Newington, Conn.; grandson Matthew Utter, and two brothers, Steven Reynolds of Cooperstown, Edward Reynolds, his wife Judy and their son Michael, all of

Cooperstown. Also, three step-children, Mark Peters of Cape Cod, Mass.; Jaci Lamb of Cape Coral, Fla., and John A. Lamb of Exeter; and five step-grandchildren.

A memorial service is at 4 p.m. Saturday Dec. 21, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, Cooperstown with Rev. Bill Delia, pastor, Cooperstown United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will be present from 2 p.m. pm until the time of the service to receive friends. Burial and committal will occur in the spring on the family plot in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.

In recognition of Nancy’s love of animals, memorial contributions may be made to the Susquehanna SPCA, 4841 State Highway 28, Cooperstown, NY 13326.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tillapaugh Funeral Service.
