Murals To Capture Past, Look To Future

MURALS/From B1 partners, operated a hardware store there until 1918; for four years in the 1870s, Wilber Bank’s Oneonta branch shared space there, according to Bob Brzozowski, Greater Oneonta Historical Society executive director.

From 1919 to about 1950, it was Lascaris’, a restaurant and soda fountain. Joanne’s Dress Shop (Joanne being a Lascaris) was there until 1970. Then Gallin Jewelry occupied the space until about 2000, a couple of years before the GOHS acquired it.

With a warm and cozy feeling.�

By populating murals about the past with living Oneontans, can old-fashion ideals of community be captured and projected into the future? That’s the idea.

Murals have “been in the air� for some time, said Brzozowski, harkening back to Jennie Williams’ in the walkway to the parking deck, and to Cynthia Marsh’s, which culminated in “First People� on lower Chestnut Street in 2010.

Brzozowski, an alderman who also chairs Main Street Oneonta’s Design Committee, was intrigued by how murals might enliven five bricked-up windows on the History Center’s Dietz side, and got approval in January from his board for Mandigo to move ahead. “Murals enhance any area,� said Anthony, whose murals have graced JFK Airport terminals and other public spaces. “They give you an ‘up’ feeling. It’s something that’s becoming more and more popular.�

The project cost was estimated at $10,000. A state “decentralization grant� through the Chenango County Council on the Arts garnered $4,000. LEAF allocated $2,000 in Mandigo’s

time, and MSO, Alan Cleinman, Deanna Palumbo and others have rounded out the estimated.

Two checks that arrived in recent days have Brzozowski adding a sixth mural over a bricked-up doorway, maybe trompe l’oeil on a “Pathway to History� theme.

The photo shoots Sexton arranged have been elaborate and precise, using lights, wardrobe, a makeup artist and on-location sets. “You’re basically simulating what they do in Hollywood,� said Mandigo.

Using an overhead camera, echoing Vermeer’s “camera obscura� process, the image is projected onto 4- by 9-foot panels, allowing Mandigo to pencil the outlines quite precisely.

A grid is overlaid on the photos and on the panel, helping the artists sketch and then paint the original image, a square at a time. First, Mandigo and Leschke will “underpaint� in browns and grays, then Anthony will add the color and final detail to complete the work.

While first panel – the Lascaris’ one – may be ready for the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration, the artists believe the project should take as long as it must. “I just want to make sure we take our time and do it right,� said Mandigo.

Reviewing that first work at Anthony’s airy studio on a rural Delaware County hillside, Mandigo reflected on how the collaboration of the four artists shows “how positive interaction comes into building a community.�

In 2010, Elaine and Marc Bresee donated additional figures they had stored at their home. “I was holding onto them for sentimental reasons,” said Elaine. “It was hard to let them go — but when I saw how beautiful the ones they had looked, how much people enjoyed them, we donated ours.”

It was a chance encounter with “Big Chuck” D’Imperio that helped reunite Sue with her father’s creations. “He told me where they were, and I was so excited, I just started crying,” she said. “They let me go down in the storeroom to see them, and sent me pictures of the display at Christmas.”

“Those figures brought the windows to life,” said Elaine. “It makes me so happy to see people enjoying them. I know they’ll be taken care of forever.”

“He took my sister Lynne and I once,” said his daughter, Sue Eliot, a 1962 OHS grad now living in Sequim, Wash. “It was 15 floors of fantasy land!”

The girls’ mother, Carol, also helped, sewing flannel nightshirts and aprons for some of the figures. “I’m sure she repurposed some of our old clothes,” said Sue. Like so many others, she was dismayed when she heard Bresee’s had closed.

“It broke my heart to think that those figures had been thrown away,” she said.

What she didn’t know was that Bob and Carol Whitling bought the figures at the auction that followed after Bresee’s 1994 closing and, after a time, donated

The Arc Otsego is a multi-faceted organization offering a variety of services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities throughout Otsego County.

Lewis, the county’s economic developer, announced in April that she would be resigning the job in August.

In a role that was described as “reactive,” the IDA, through its bonding authority, has enabled such projects as Springbrook’s $15 million expansion and the $15 million, 350-student Hillside Commons housing complex near SUNY Oneonta.

While appreciating that role, county Rep. Betty Anne Schwerd, R-Edmeston, the county board’s rep on the IDA, Miller and members of Citizen Voices, a pro-growth businesspeople’s group, argued for a more “pro-active” role in bringing jobs here.

“Now,” said Seward, “a definite course is established and we are prepared to embark on a new path toward future economic growth and prosperity in Otsego County.”

The interim IDA director since Lewis’ departure, Doug Gulotty, had argued for an inclusive economicdevelopment initiative, and Seward embraced that as well.

He plans on using these skills to set up skateboarding clinics, where he’ll teach new skaters proper technique and safety. “My plan is to start a skate team,” he said. “The skate park needs work, and I want to help fix it. It needs more obstacles, a better rail, a real half-pipe.”

Robinson is also working on finishing the downstairs workshop, where skaters can customize their boards with paint, stencils and stickers.

“I want to help keep kids out of trouble,” he said. “I want them to be productive. They can come down here, hang out, work on their boards.”

And while he sets up the museum, he’s using the wall space to showcase work by local artists.

“I want to show the history of skateboarding,” he said. “It’s about bringing skate culture to Oneonta.”

It’s a passion that dates back to Robinson’s high school years, when a friend taught him to skate in their Brooklyn neighborhood.

IN MEMORIAM Robert W. Riddell, Sr., 81, Retired Farmer, Ordained Baptist Deacon ONEONTA – Robert W. Riddell Sr., 81, a retired chicken farmer and an ordained deacon in the Baptist church, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5 at his home.

Born on the Ouleout in Meridale on Jan. 12, 1932, to parents Neil and Mary (White) Riddell, Bob moved away from home at age 11. He met his future wife, Mary Elizabeth Odell, at 15 while attending Franklin Central School. After graduation, they married on April 1, 1951. Their first child, Leta Mae, was born 10 months later.

Scrappy and hardworking, Bob spent time as a butcher, carpenter, mailman, farmer, landowner and later milk-hauler and entrepre-

neur.

In 1952, Bob ventured into the chicken business, starting with 8,000 egglaying birds.

By 1961, he Robert W. had grown Riddell, Sr. the business more than six times to 53,000 started pullets. With his own hands, he both built the chicken houses the new birds were caged in, and helped renovate his own expanding family’s home.

In 1963, Bob bought a Chevy truck, and with it a business delivering bagged shavings to area farmers.

That purchase laid the foundation for the milk-hauling firm Riddell Brothers. One of Bob’s greatest joys in life was working alongside his son, Robert W. Riddell Jr., so in 1981 he decided to leave chicken farming permanently, to help Bobby run the new company.

Bob gave his life to the Lord and was baptized in 1958 at the First Baptist Church in Oneonta. As his belief in Christ grew, he preached and taught God’s Word as a lay minister and Sunday school teacher.

Bob and Mary resided on Southside Drive from 1951 to 2003. In retirement, he and Bobby restored the old one-room schoolhouse on Southside.

He served on the Davenport Town Board and was a trustee for the Oneonta Plains Cemetery. The Riddells were retired in Inverness, Fla., from 2003 to 2012. In 2004, Bob became an ordained deacon at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Inverness, where he served and taught an adult Sunday school class.

In 2012, the couple moved back home to Oneonta, where he served briefly at Wesleyan Southside Church. He taught his last Sunday school class and preached his last sermon on Labor Day Sunday 2013.

In addition to his wife of 62 years, Mary of Oneonta, he is survived by three children, Leta Newhart of

Michael A. Swiderski, 45; Represented City On County Board ONEONTA – Michael A. Swiderski, 45, who represented the City of Oneonta’s Wards 5 and 6 on the Otsego County Board of Representative when he was in his 30s, died suddenly on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, of a heart attack.

Mike was born in Oneonta on Feb. 9, 1968, to Janis R. Bigwood-Swiderski and Eliguisz Swiderski. He was educated in Oneonta schools, graduating from Oneonta High School and

attending SUNY Oneonta.

He married Michelle Shultis of Schenevus and together they created a family with Andrew Michael and Jameson Edmund.

After running his family business, Country Club Liquors, Mike joined Opici Wine Co. of New York, East

Syracuse, as a wine and liquor consultant.

In addition to Andrew and Jamie of Schenevus and their mother, Michelle Shultis-Swiderski, survivors include his mother, Janis Swiderski of Largo, Fla., and two sisters, Emilia Borelli and her husband, Nicholas,

and their son, Cooper, and Dr. Marianne Soden and her son, Justin.

Calling hours were Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Grummons Funeral Home.

A funeral mass was planned at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12, at St. Mary’s Church in Oneonta.

OBITUARIES Carol A. McLean, 65; Built Log-Cabin Home, Churned Own Butter HARTWICK – Carol A. McLean, 65, who was known for her homemade butter and love for animals, died unexpectedly Thursday, December 5, 2013 at her home.

Born Sept. 28, 1948 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, Carol was the daughter of Victor and Marian (Beauman) Williams. She was raised on the family farm on Christian Hill and attended Hartwick Elementary and Hartwick High School. She married her high school sweetheart Ronald McLean of Edmeston and they resided on Christian Hill and later Zachow Road property for over 45 years.

Carol enjoyed the out of doors and nature in general.

She loved animals of every kind, especially her horses which she rode at every opportunity. She was an extremely hard worker and was always an active participant in the many chores around the farm.

Carol was also well known for her homemade butter which she sold locally

and far beyond. She was proud that she and her husband had personally built, from logs they had harvested, their log cabin home.

She is survived by her husband Ronald, her two sons, Edward of Prattsville and Charles of Hartwick, and her grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Natalie Hawley of Binghamton, her sister Marlene Bryant of Cooperstown, her sister Victoria Kappler (Richard) of Texas, her brother James Williams (Marjorie) of Tennessee and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In accordance with Carol’s wishes there will be no services.

After running his family business, Country Club Liquors, Mike joined Opici Wine Co. of New York, East Syracuse, as a wine and liquor consultant.

Ron Van Alstine, 72; Builder EAST SPRINGFIELD – Ronald A. Van Alstine, Sr., who was raised on a farm in East Springfield and became a successful building contractor in Saratoga County, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2013, at his home in Mayfield, on Great Sacadanga Lake. He was 72.

The son of Earl and Hazel (Slingerland) Van Alstine, he attended East Springfield School, where he excelled in athletics and attended Boys State. He married his high school sweetheart, Kathy Scott, on July 2, 1960. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary this year.

He began his career as a linotype operator at the Little Falls Times and Saratoga Printing Co. Later, he owned and operated Park Place Mobile Home Park in Porters Corners, Saratoga County. He built many custom homes in the Saratoga/ Wilton/Greenfield market.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Connie and Joe Larkin of Denver, Colo., Ronald Van Alstine, Jr. of Saratoga, and Penny and Albert Giddings of Kingwood, Texas; seven grandchildren and one step-granddaughter, a brother and sisters.
