ust in time for the mad rush of the holidays, Jim Belleau’s new book has a solution to the stress.

“The Oneness is trying to reach us,” he said. “It’s letting us know that inner peace is extremely available.”

The “Oneness” – the word is interchangeable with “heaven,” Belleau explains – is the subject of his new book, “Quantum Reggae: Messages from Bob.” It contains essays and song lyrics, all which came to

Rigbys Save Victorian Ornaments From Extinction

The Rigbys, then living on Staten Island, made the ornaments for several years, but in 2000, they packed the molds away. “We wanted a normal Christmas,” said Janet.

Moving to Cooperstown, Bill continued his restoration hardware business, but ornament requests kept arriving. Now that their children, Emilie and Will, are at Syracuse University and in the

Navy, respectively, they’re back to making their order list and checking it twice. “People saved magazine articles about us,” said Bill.

The ornaments are so accurate that some unscrupulous sellers have tried to pass them off as originals.

To combat this, he now solders on a post to differentiate his modern ones, and uses old Bell Telephone wire for the hangers. “Tin is fragile, but malleable,” he said. “That’s why so few originals survive – you step on it and it’s flattened.”

He currently has 20 molds in production, including stars, moons and suns, snowflakes, parrots, reindeer, a dog and a fish. “You can have a little zoo on your tree!” said Janet.

The ornaments are made by melting pure tin, then dipping a brass mold in it and quickly removing it.

On a good day, Bill can make 50 small parrots and fish. “It’s all in the touch,” he said, deftly peeling off a parrot. If they’re not up to his standards, he can melt them back down. “For every three I mold, only one gets cast,” he said.

Janet does the painting, using shellacs imported from France to mimic beautiful jewel tones.

“Where we can, we try to duplicate color arrangements,” she said, pulling two books of antique ornaments off the shelf. “We make them look like rubies and emeralds.”

A few days later, he felt a second song coming on: “My People (Feel it How).” “I put the pen down and asked ‘What is this?’ An instant later, I clearly heard ‘Messages from Bob.’” Reggae singer Bob Marley, known for such as “No Woman No Cry” and “One Love,” died of cancer on May 11, 1981, at age 36.

He’s had two direct encounters with Bob during his meditations, both of which he writes about in one of the book’s several essays. In addition to the lyrics, he also includes the “Quantum Reggae Manifesto” and writings about the production of the songs, where he details an encounter with Ziggy Marley at a concert in Albany. “I handed his manager a binder full of these songs,” he said.

Although he didn’t hear back from Ziggy, Belleau says he plans to finish the project before contacting any more of Bob’s nine children.

Since he first saw those words appear, he’s written approximately one song per month,

with no rewrites, and has written three new songs since the book’s release. “They’re from the Oneness,” he said.

“They’re describing the Oneness and how to get to it.”

He debuted the book in October at a conference for the book, “A Course in Miracles.” “The

reception was excellent – one women saw it and tears filled her eyes. She said ‘I’ve missed Bob so much’.”

The songs were recorded by Kingston recording artist Maroghini, who Belleau met through a friend, and has received steady airplay on Jamaican radio. “With this project, you go with the flow,” he said. “I’m game for this.”

Belleau writes a message to world leaders in the back of his book, encouraging them to invite him to speak on “Quantum Forgiveness.” “This is the fulfillment of Bob Marley’s message of freedom,” he said. “There’s an inner peace for everyone – this book describes the path to it.”

A signing at The Green Toad is planned for 2013, and Belleau is hoping to bring Maroghini up to perform some of the songs at a book release dance party.

“It sounds pretty wild,” Belleau warns with a wide grin. “I wouldn’t believe it myself if it hadn’t happened to me, but what’s occurring here is true.”

The OTSEGO Newspapers – The Freeman’s Journal and Hometown Oneonta – are joining with The Salvation Army to make a joyful Christmas for area families through its Angel Tree Program.

This tradition dates back to 1921 with the creation of The Freeman’s Journal Christmas Fund by Editor & Publisher Rowan D. Spraker Sr., as a way for neighbors to help others enjoy a happy holiday.

This week marks the 91st year of this community tradition, partnering this year with The Salvation Army.

Glenford H. Hubbell, 84; Realtor Ran Schneider’s Bakery COOPERSTOWN – Glenford H. Hubbell, the prominent local realtor who also ran Cooperstown’s landmark Schneider’s Bakery for decades, passed away early Tuesday morning, Nov. 27, 2012, at Otsego Manor. He was 84.

Born May 5, 1928, in Halcottsville, Glen was the son of Loren and Elizabeth (Hinkley) Hubbell.

A graduate of Roxbury High School, Class of 1945, he served in the Navy in 1945-46.

On Sept. 19, 1948, Glen married Lillian E. Moran in

Shandaken.

Glen was a baker in Margaretville and Delhi, then at Engle’s Bakery in Oneonta, until 1951, Glenford when he and Hubbell Lil moved to Cooperstown, purchasing Schneider’s Bakery at Main and Chestnut. In 1978, Glen opened Hubbell’s Real Estate.

An avid golfer, he was a long-time subscriber to the Leatherstocking Golf

Course in Cooperstown.

Of the Episcopal faith, he was a member of Christ Church. He was also a member and past treasurer of the former Susquehanna Tribe 575, Improved Order of Red Men, a member and past president of The Mohican Club, and a former member of the Lions Club.

He was active with the Hubbell Historical Association.

In the winter months, he especially enjoyed travelling with Lil to Florida.

Survivors include two daughters, JoAnn Hubbell and Christine Winslow and

her husband, Michael, all of Fly Creek; one son, Glenn E. Hubbell and his wife, Cindy, of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren, Jason Long of Cooperstown, Victoria Gula and her husband, John, of Schenectady, Andria Horn and her husband, Bradford, of Cooperstown, Cassandra Woosley and her husband, Donald, of Charleston, S.C., Jennifer Hubbell and Laura Hubbell, both of New York City, and Brian Hubbell of Boston; and two great grandchildren, Natalia and Donovan Gula.

His wife passed away Jan.

13, 1997.

Calling hours are 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. James R. Crouthamel, assisting pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Lakewood Cemetery.

Sampson P. Bowers, Sr., 88; Descendant Of One Of Cooperstown’s Earliest Families COOPERSTOWN – Sampson P. Bowers, Sr., a descendant of one of Cooperstown’s earliest families, and who counted Martha Washington among many eminent ancestors, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, in San Francisco.

Sampson was born on Dec. 1, 1923, into one of Otsego County’s most prominent families, at home, in New York City, not far from his family’s first farm in New Amsterdam where Wall Street is today.

His father, Spotswood Dandridge Bowers, was a leading New York City attorney who represented some of New York’s political elite, including – with his father, John Myer Bowers – Theodore Roosevelt, in a successful 1915 libel suit against William Barnes, publisher of the Albany Evening Journal.

Sampson was proud that his father was one of the top-ranked golf players in the country, state badminton and billiards champion, and a nationally ranked contract bridge player who helped write the rules of the game.

Sampson’s grandfather, John Myer Bowers, was a

member of the Electoral College from New York State and was appointed

by President Wilson to Sampson P. the New Bowers, Sr. York Legal Advisory Board in connection with the World War I draft.

On his father’s side, Sampson could trace his lineage to 15th Century Wales.

George Bowers immigrated to Massachusetts in 1656.

In the 1700s, his grandson, Jonathon, founded Somerset, Mass., where he and his brothers founded a shipbuilding business. Jonathon’s son, Henry Bowers, born in 1716, continued the shipbuilding business and owned a fleet of over 100 ships plying the Atlantic.

Also on his father’s side, he was a direct descendant of Alexander Spotswood, the first colonial governor of Virginia and, also, of Martha Dandridge, who married President George Washington following the death of her first husband, Daniel Parke Custis. Also

on his father’s side, he could trace his Stewart lineage back to King Kenneth II, who conquered the Picts in 845. Six generations later, it amused Sampson to know that Kenneth II’s descendent, Banquo, was murdered

by Macbeth in 1040.

Sampson’s mother, Marjorie Sampson Smith, was the granddaughter of Admiral William Thomas Sampson, a Naval hero of the Spanish-American War. Through his mother’s side, Sampson could trace his lineage to the Campbell Clan of 9th Century Scotland.

Sampson’s great-greatgreat grandfather, Henry Bowers, married a Myer from New Amsterdam whose dowry included a land grant from King George III for 30,000 acres of land extending from the east side of the Susquehanna at Cooperstown to nearly Cherry Valley, and included Bowerstown, In 1804, his great-great-grandfather, John Myer Bowers, a congressman, built Lakelands, a mansion still occupied on the east end of Main Street.

Sampson was listed in the New York Social Register.

Sampson attended the

Buckley School, New York City, and the Fay School and St. Mark’s School, both in Southborough, Mass.

He attended the Pasadena Playhouse School of the Theater, and was working for the Dayton (Ohio) Civic Theater when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

The next day, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps Cadet Training program, graduated a pilot in 1943, and served in Greenland, flying B-25s on submarine patrol and rescue missions.

He was later transferred to the 36th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron, trained to fly the Lockheed P-38 in Muskogee, Okla., and then sent to the South Pacific where he flew reconnaissance missions from Biak and the Philippines until the end of the war in 1945.

He then settled in Cooperstown, opening the award-winning Sportsman’s Tavern in Fly Creek which he operated for several years. He moved to New York City and joined Anheuser-Busch as a salesman; promoted to district salesman, he covered about a third of New York State.

Recuperating at his home

in Cooperstown from an injury, he and his brother Roy started a home building business, Bowers Development Co., the initial developer of Lakeland Shores.

He later joined Life magazine’s marketing department, using his home-building experience to help Life advertisers to promote their products. The led to a position with McCann-Erickson as an account supervisor, and new business director with McCann-Marschalk, where he doubled billings in two years. He then joined Warwick & Legler, and was senior vice president within a year.

After leaving Warwick & Legler, he moved his family to Carmel, Calif., where he worked as a carpenter. He soon had a long pony tail, continued his art career, and spent a lot of time at Big Sur. Later divorced, he traveled up and down the West Coast doing carpentry jobs, and ended up at York Creek Vineyards where he first remodeled a house for Fritz Maytag and then built him a weekend house completely from scratch.

Settling in St. Helena, he continued contracting and

painting landscapes and portraits. He was elected to the City Council, ran unsuccessfully for mayor and joined Living Rivers Council to oppose the St. Helena Flood project. He moved to Stonebridge Apartments in 2004 where he still lived and worked to preserve St. Helena’s small-town, rural, agricultural qualities.

Survivors include his children: Sampson Jr. and wife Lesley, John Spotswood Bowers and wife Diane, Martha Dandridge Bowers and husband Thomas Bordonaro, Thomas Robert Campbell Bowers and wife Donna Mills, Samantha Todd Bowers and Danielle Ticoulat-Bowers, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Sampson will be laid to rest with seven generations of his family at Lakewood Cemetery.

John A. O’Kelly, 81; D&H Retiree Noted For Pool-Playing Skills

ONEONTA – John A. O’Kelly, 81, of Oneonta, passed away on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at Fox Hospital.

John was born on March 16, 1931, in Oneonta, the son of the late James P. and Marguerite (Gilbert) O’Kelly. He married Carol Brown on May 11, 1951.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War. John was a plumbing foreman for more than 30 years for the D&H Railroad.

After retiring from the railroad, he worked for 15 years for Oneonta Public Transit.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, the Oneonta American Legion Post 259, the Oneonta Elks Lodge 1312 and the NRA. He enjoyed shooting pool and was considered by many to be one of Oneonta’s best. He especially enjoyed his Friday meetings with his family and friends at No Place.

In addition to his wife, Carol Van Hoesen of Oneonta; his children, Judith Pelkey and her husband, Wallace, of Alburg, Vt., Janet O’Kelly and

partner, Marie D’Entrone of Troy, Jonathan O’Kelly and his wife, Lidia of Washington, D.C., JeriLynne O’Kelly of Sanger, Calif., and Steve O’Kelly and his wife, Anne of Hobart, Ind. Also, seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Beverly Thomson and her husband, Richard of Mount Vision; his sisterin-law, Dorothy O’Kelly of Meredith; and many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his parents; his two brothers, James and Robert O’Kelly;

and his granddaughter, Erin Hammac.

The funeral was Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. Mary’s Church, with the Rev. David

niece, Diana Shafer, Stamford.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann at birth in 1950; and her husband, Virgil in 1989.

Calling hours are from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, Nov. 30, in the Bookhout

Cancer Society, 13 Beech St., Johnson City NY 13790.

Arrangements were entrusted to Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Hilma Loucks, 90; German-Born, Worked for Oneonta Dairy ONEONTA – Hilma Aleksa Rumenapp Loucks, 90, who emigrated from Germany in 1935, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Fox Nursing Home, Oneonta.

She was born on Feb. 7, 1922, in Plauen, Saxony, Germany, to Joseph and Kaethe Aleksa. She first married Henry Rumenapp on Sept. 23, 1944. She later married Virgil Loucks on Feb. 18, 1962.

She worked for Oneonta Dairy, JJ Newberry’s and JC Penney’s. She was a past member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Oneonta.

She is survived by two sons, Henry Rumenapp and Richard and Ginny Rumenapp, both of Franklin; two stepsons, John Loucks of Cold Spring, and Don Loucks of North Hollywood, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Woodcock of Oneonta; and a

Mickiewicz, officiating.

Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Dr. Arthur E. Laidlaw; 97, Bassett Pediatrician For Quarter Century COOPERSTOWN – Dr. Arthur E. Laidlaw, a Bassett Hospital pediatrician for a quarter-century before retiring in 1975, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. He had been living at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

He is survived by his sons, A.E. “Tex” Laidlaw Jr. of Stratton Mountain, Vt., and Robert E. Laidlaw of Montrose, Colo.; four grandchildren, Sarah L. Wilde, Natalie E. Laidlaw, Katherine B. Laidlaw and

Willie A. Laidlaw; three great-granddaughters, Malin, Cate and Liv. His wife of 68 years, Natalie E. “Bunny” Laidlaw predeceased him on May 9, 2011.

He was born on April 14, 1915, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Yale University and Yale Medical School. He also studied at Harvard, Johns Hopkins and Columbia P&S at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

After serving in the

Army Medical Corps during World War II, he practiced pediatrics at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in 194749, then moving to Keene, N.H., where he practiced and was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He also was a trustee at the Laconia (N.H.) State School for Handicapped Children.

He returned to Bassett in 1960, where he practiced until retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the Cooperstown Country Club and raced a Star Class sail-

boat for many years. During retirement, wintered on St. Simons Island, Ga., where he volunteered to help the needy file their tax returns.

Juliette Pedersen, 54; Worked in Finance at Brookwood School MORRIS – Juliette Marie Pedersen, 54, Brookwood School’s former assistant director of finance, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012.

She was born in 1958, in Hamilton, the daughter of Robert Parsons and Margaret (Ridgeway) Parsons Mulligan.

In addition to Brookwood, she worked for GC Castings of Morris for over 15 years.

Survivors include her mother, Margaret Mulligan; a sister, Susan Wilcox; her children, Jason Dunham and wife Patty, Stephanie Dunham, Larissa Dunham, Nathan Cotten and wife Krista, Danielle Cotten, Jared Pedersen; grandchildren, Kaylie, Kiernan, Kendra, Kinlee, Logan, Jennadee, Gabriella, Noah and Elijah; nephews, Scott, Robert and Erick Wilcox, and her “favorite niece” Amanda Neidhardt.
