ever married, dressed in old, tattered clothes and driving a horse and buggy even into the 1940s, Mert and Fred Wilcox were an enigma to the people of Oneonta. “They were from another time, another era,” said Helen Rees. “They were misunderstood.”

But to the kids of the Sixth Ward, the mythology of the Wilcox brothers was one of apples and baseball, of dares and terror, of old stories and close friendships, related Aug. 10 at the Swart-Wilcox House’s Summer Sundays talk, “Growing Up in the Sixth Ward.” “Mert was a nice old gentleman,” said Orrin Higgins. “Too bad more kids couldn’t see him as a decent person.”

hen Paul Lord saw the blurry image on the side-scan sonar at the bottom of Otsego Lake, he knew as clear as day what he was looking at. “I knew what it was, because I’d been searching for it since 1995.”

The image was Blue Jeans, a 16-foot fiberglass sailboat that sank off the Pathfinder Baptist Camp on East Lake Road.

In 1995, Rev. Doug Deer’s children, David and Katherine, lifeguards at the camp, were racing sailboats when the Blue Jeans ran into trouble.

Blue Jeans Just The Latest Find For SUNY Field Station Diving Team SUNKEN/From B1 dipped, the Blue Jeans foundered and quickly sank out of view.

Until 2012.

Lord and the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station volunteer dive team had been trolling Otsego Lake’s sound end with the sonar, a process he calls “mowing the grass.” “It helps us locate with the greatest of precision,” said Lord.

“The lake is huge, and there’s a lot of bottom we’ve never had a reason to explore.”

The team wasn’t looking for the Blue Jeans, but on one of their passes, the single image appeared.

Last month, the divers returned.

Sure enough, 98 feet below the surface was the Blue Jeans, mast intact, a mere 45 feet from where it was plotted to have capsized.

“Pat McCormick and I were both searching down there, but he found it first,” said Lord.

It isn’t the dive team’s first recovered treasure. Last August, it brought up The Leatherstocking, owned by W.T. Sampson Smith, Sam Smith’s dad, which famously burned and sank in the middle of the lake 80 years previous. The next month, the divers found an Ercoupe, a low-winged monoplane

that crashed into the lake in 1948, killing the two veterans aboard.

“We find a lot of canoes,” Lord said. “And every kind of engine that’s ever moved a boat.”

In 2012, the divers took a video of the Blue Jeans, sharing it with the Pathfinder Camp’s staff that fall. But with winter approaching, they delayed retrieving the boat immediately, not wanting it to spend the winter outside. “The water and mud would have been frozen and that could crack the hull,” said Lord.

And on Sunday, Aug. 3, the team, which included SUNY

Oneonta students Kevin Schermerhorn, Kaylee Herzog and Jennifer Piacente dove down to retrieve the boat. They attached lift bags – which they inflated with scuba tanks – to two attachments points and used 850 pounds of lift to raise the boat to the surface.

But the Blue Jeans wouldn’t return to land that easily. “We were using a flat-bottomed workboat, but that wasn’t going to work,” said Lord. “We ended up attaching that boat to a barge, and the divers still had to push it into shore.”

20 years, the boat in remarkable shape. “It’s preserved by virtue of how cold it is down there,” he said. “The sails and rigging were still intact.”

And now, Gary Busch, Pathfinder’s waterfront director, plans to repair the Blue Jeans to sail again.

“We may even sail her this week,” he said.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, the divers laid out the sails to dry and began repairing the mast. “I’ve had a few boats that I’ve raised get back in the water,” said Lord. “But this might be the first one I’ve ever been there to see it sail again.”

Gathering in front of the now well-tended Swart-Wilcox House museum, Sixth Ward reminiscers recalled the days when Fred and Mert Wilcox lived there, and the soot was so thick inside you couldn’t see out the windows.

Sixth Ward Reminiscers Recall Wilcox Brothers Idiosyncracies WILCOX/From B1 Then Henry and Phoebe Wilcox moved into the house – Oneonta’s oldest – in 1867. Fred was born in the house, then his sister Myrtle, who died at age 5 of “moroseness” in 1875.

Merton, born in 1878, was named for her.

Fred was the youngest vice president in the history of Wilber Bank, but after an accident with involving a horse – he was either kicked or fell off it, the story goes – he never returned to work.

“On her deathbed, Phoebe asked Mert to always look after his brother,” said Rees, a Friends of Swart-Wilcox member. “And he did. He was engaged once, but the woman didn’t want to live with his brother, so he broke the engagement.”

After Phoebe died in 1903, the boys kept the house exactly as she had, eschewing such modern conveniences as electricity, running water or central heat. “Sometimes it would get so cold in the winter that they would go into the barn, because the animals kept the barn warmer than the house could,” said Helen. “It was sad.”

To heat the house, the brothers would chop down a tree and strip off the branches for kindling. When they got a fire going, they’d put one end of the tree into the stove and the other on a chair, pushing the chair closer and closer as the log burned.

As a result, the interior was so blackened with soot that when Rees received a gift of Phoebe’s black velvet parlor set, she discovered that it was not, in fact, black velvet. “It was maroon,” she said. “There was so much soot that it blackened the entire set.”

Neighbor Jim Dibble would often come by to play the organ music they loved, but could only come on very specific days, when the sun was shining and the air was warm enough to open the kitchen door. “Otherwise, there wasn’t enough light to see the sheet music!”

But as the last farm in Oneonta, it attracted hordes of Sixth Ward kids, drawn to their open fields and rows of

apple trees.

“Mert and Fred allowed us to play baseball in their lawn,” said John Higgins, Orrin’s brother; the two were raised in the Sixth Ward. “I kept that lawn mowed with my grandfather’s old mower, two guys pulling it with a rope in front, two pushing it from the back!”

Sometimes, Mert would offer the kids some money in exchange for chores.

“They wanted to pay us to clean the barn,” said Orrin.

“The manure was two and a half feet deep. I don’t know if we ever made a dent.”

But woe be to anyone who took their quiet generosity too far. “One night, Paul Vagliardo was pilfering strawberries,” said Albert Colone. “Mert took the shotgun and shot him with rock salt!”

Albert himself got into some trouble with the Wilcox brothers too. “Frank and I were playing, probably not being too friendly to them, and Mert started following us home,” he said.

“We got home quicker than usual, and I told my grandmother – in Italian – that he was coming after us. We all went out to the porch and he stopped at the bottom step, looked up at this 4foot-3-inch old lady holding a broom, and he walked away.”

“Kids would rattle their doors and scare them,” lamented Helen. “They teased them, but they also helped them a lot too, bringing in the mail or helping them get water.”

Unlike many of his peers, Orrin, saw a different side of the Wilcox brothers. “He was one of the few that they would allow in the house,” John said. “I’d help him put up the hay, and then afterwards, we’d sit under a tree and he would get out his father’s old diaries.”

Orrin even continued visiting Mert into the 1960s, when he was in Fox Nursing Home. “I pleaded with him not to let the city burn down their barn,” said Orrin. “But he told me they’d threatened him with lawsuits.”

When the barn was demolished in a controlled burn in 1968, Orrin wrote a strongly worded letter to the paper denouncing the act.

“The day after the burn, I went through the ashes and I picked up the iron hinges,” he said. “When they opened the museum, I gave them back.”

Two of the hinges are on the lower part of the corn crib, and others are mounted on a display in the basement. “The home was a dream for a historic architect,” said Helen. “But that was just the way the boys lived.”

IN MEMORIAM James R. Green, 90; Lifelong Rotary Club Member DELAWARE CITY, Del. – Word has been received that James R. Green, 90, the former owner of Putnam Motors and Charles Stationary in Oneonta, passed away on June 19, 2014.

He was the son of the late William and Gladys (Hume) Green.

Born and raised in Oneonta, James graduated from Oneonta High School and attended Hartwick College for several years. He was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II. Before retiring, he had several successful businesses. For many years, James owned Putnam Motors. He

then owned Charles Stationery on Main Street in Oneonta.

James was a lifelong member of the James Green Oneonta Rotary Club. He and his wife were members of the Oneonta Country Club, where they enjoyed playing golf and doubles tennis together.

They were also members of the National Association of Mental Illness, which gave them great assistance and support for their daugh-

ter, Susan. After his heart surgery, James also started a heart club in Oneonta.

James’ greatest enjoyment was taking road trips and picnicking with his family.

He also was an avid trout and bass fisherman and enjoyed cheering on his New York Yankees and New York Giants.

He is survived by his daughter, LaRetha Osborn (Jonathan); grandchildren, Jonathan Osborn (Szuhua) and Sarah Gerkens (Henry H. Gerkens IV); greatgrandchildren, Lily Anna Osborn, Henry H. Gerkens V, Grace Gerkens and Christian James Gerkens.

James was predeceased by his wife of 64 years,

Nona (Shotwell) Green; daughter, Susan Meagher; son-in-law, Tom Meagher; and two sisters.

Visitation will be 11 a.m.noon Saturday, Aug. 16, at the W.R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango St., Binghamton, where a memorial service will begin at noon.

Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Whitney Point.

Frances B. Mattice, 86; Active At ‘Red Door’ Church ONEONTA – Frances B. Mattice, 86, a lifelong resident of Oneonta, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 6, 1927 in Oneonta, the youngest of nine, to George and Ella (Alger) Beams.

Fran married John E. Mattice on Oct. 2, 1945 at the First United Presbyterian Church in Oneonta.

She was the office manger at Empire Live Stock in

Oneonta for 30 years, retiring in 1987.

Fran was a life long member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She served as an Elder, Trustee and served on the Altar Guild. She was the second of five generations of members of the “Red Door Church.”

She is survived by her children, Debbie and Bob Archer of Maryland, David and Connie Mattice of Oneonta, John Jr. and Pam

Mattice of Laurens, Melissa “Lisa” and Chris Carvin of Oneonta; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Minnie Beams and Joyce Stone and many nieces, nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John on Dec. 5, 2010; her parents, three brothers, and five sisters.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the First United Pres-

byterian Church, 2 Walling Ave., Oneonta, followed by a reception in the church social hall.

A private burial will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery.

Gail Ruthann Butler, 71; Foster Mom, Caretaker of Fly Creek Cemetery

Ed Brodzinsky, 71; Organized Antique Book Fair SCHENEVUS – Ed Brodzinsky, 71, who organized the Cooperstown Antiquarian Book Fair, died Saturday, Aug, 2 at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

He was born Feb. 12, 1943. A graduate of Pratt Institute as a registered architect, he designed many buildings in and around Gloucester, Mass. He worked as an architect for three years in the greater London area.

He and his wife moved to Elk Creek in 1988, where he began an active business as an antiquarian book dealer.

After retiring as a book dealer, he continued his connection with the world of antiquarian books by

organizing the annual Cooperstown Antiquarian Book Fair.

In Gloucester, he was an active member of Temple Avahath Achim and was president of B’nai Brith.

He loved all the arts, especially music, painting and photography. He was an award-winning photographer and his photos were used in books and magazines internationally. He was also a watercolorist with work selected for juried shows.

Always a lover of classical music, he became enamored of opera through the Glimmerglass Festival, attending many performances each season. Active in the

Opera Guild, he served as president for two years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, and his daughters Laura, Johanna and Sara. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Veronica, Sam and Mica, and his brother, Malcolm, as well as much-loved members of his extended family.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth Davidson, 91; Lifelong Bassett Employee Remembered for Stateliness COOPERSTOWN–Elizabeth Davidson, 91, a lifelong employee of Bassett Hospital, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at Otsego Manor.

Betty was born in New York City on Feb. 9, 1923, the daughter of Willard James Davidson - a native of Cooperstown - and Ruth (Sutton) Davidson.

Betty will be fondly remembered for her stateliness, strength, great competence as a nurse, as well as her pragmatic, self-sufficient and independent nature.

Betty is survived by several cousins and friends.

A graveside service will be offered at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15,, in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery on Cemetery Road in Fly Creek, with the Rev. Elsie Armstrong Rhodes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown, and the Rev. Betsy Jay, Chaplain at Bassett Medical Center, officiating.

FLY CREEK – Gail Ruthann Butler, 71, a scout leader, foster mother and caretaker of the Fly Creek Cemetery, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at her home in Ruffin, S.C..

A daughter of Eli K. Kelly and Ruth Kelly Chase, she was born April 21, 1943, in Delhi. She lived there and in Treadwell, Otego and later, Sidney, where she completed her education.

On Feb. 17, 1962, Gail married David Parker Butler at the United Methodist Church in Sidney. After living in Otego for a number of years, the Butlers moved to Fly Creek.

During this time, Gail also took care of a number of foster children. They made their home there from 1972 until 2001.

Gail worked at Bendix Corp. in Sidney, as a machinist for a period of time.

After moving to Fly Creek, she worked at Bassett Hospital as a nurse in the ICU. After leaving there, she worked at The Meadows nursing home as a charge nurse.

Gail was a Girl Scout leader while living in Otego and a Cub Scout leader in Fly Creek for many years.

After retiring from nursing, Gail was the superintendent and caretaker of the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery and received an “Arrow of Light” from President George Bush for her dedicated service. During this time she also ran for a seat on the town council.

In 2008, she retired to South Carolina. During her retirement years, Gail enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, sewing, ceramics, gardening, hiking, camping, helping others, exercising and talking at the gym. She loved to keep busy.

A member of the Fly Creek United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 Auxiliary in Cooperstown. She was an active member of the St. John’s United Methodist Church in Ruffin, S.C. Gail is survived by one daughter, Debra Butler Sinclair of Taylors, S.C.; foster son, Carl Lewis (Kathi) Hendrick of Tucson, Ariz.;

three grandchildren, Gail Grace Nicole Sinclair, Joseph Daniel David Sinclair and Deanne Bailey; greatgrandchildren; and a number of foster children; her sister, Dorlyn Burgin (Bryan); brother, Eli F. Kelly (Peg); and one other sister.

She was predeceased by one son, Daniel Mark Butler, who died in September 1987.

Gail’s remains will be cremated. A memorial service was held Saturday, Aug. 9, at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Ruffin, S.C., with the Rev. Edward Stiltz officiating. Burial will be later in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery in Fly Creek.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southern Care Hospice, 9294 Medical Plaza Drive, N. Charleston, SC 29406, or to organizations of your choosing.

After 21 Years, Rev. Doug Deer, Dean Of Cooperstown Clergy, Bids Farewell

ometimes, the cleverness of Rev. Doug Deer’s sermon titles get the better of him.

“One time, I borrowed a sign from a real-estate agency for a sermon titled ‘A Piece of Rock’,” he said.

“A neighboring church saw the “For Sale” sign out front, and offered to help – they thought we were selling the church because we were having money problems!”

Deer’s sermon titles often play on pop culture. (This week’s “God Has a Better Idea” harkens back to a 1960s Ford ad). “They make the sermon memorable, then people think about it, then they remember and share it,” he said.

But after 21 years at First Baptist Church, he’ll soon give his last such sermon – tentatively titled “1,000 Ways to Say I Love You” – on Sunday, Aug. 31, before he and his wife Susan move to Cortland to be closer to their daughter Katherine. A farewell reception is planned 11 a.m.-1 p.m. this Sunday, the 17th, to give the community a chance to say goodbye. “We’ve really enjoyed being part of the community,” he said. “I’ve always loved preaching, but it’s time to cut back.”
