ud Fowler, raised in Cooperstown, was the first black professional baseball player, but – it turns out – he was an aspiring playwright in his retirement. “The Retired Black Planter features love at home and adventures in Nicaragua, where the play’s hero discovers a rich gold mine and uses the fortune to recover the hand of his loved one.

Established, the general sends his son, Charles, born in Nicaragua, to visit his Central American homeland. The young man goes into the interior, discovers a gold mine, but is then lost in the jungle. Back home, General Marqueze dies. His will gives half of Wanderer’s Rest to Charles, and half to Colonel Brown in exchange for tending the other half until the son’s return. Instead, the colonel sells the property, uses part the proceeds to buy his former slavemaster’s plantation in Galveston, Texas, and invests the rest in fruit crops in Puerto Rico. When the crops are destroyed by a hurricane, Colonel Brown mortgages the land to replant crops. A young, rich Puerto Rican holds the mortgage, and the colonel, as part of the deal, promises him his daughter Maud’s hand in marriage. Charles returns, meets Maud at her school in Boston and the two fall in love. They agree to marry in a year, which Charles will spend in Nicaragua extracting a fortune from his gold mine. When Colonel Brown discovers the lovers’ pact, he insists Maud marry immediately. But Charles returns on the ceremony in progress, rescues his beloved, forgives the colonel (now his father-in-law-to-be) and writes him a check, which Brown uses to clear the mortgage and end any commitment to the Puerto Rican beau. “As drama, it’s a beginner’s,” said MacDougall of the play, which the script reports would have included singing, music and a chorus.
