Much Has Changed Since 1939 Opening

1939/From B1 rounded out Thursday, June 12, the 75th anniversary of the first Induction, with three who attended the original event: Homer Osterhoudt and Howard Talbot of Cooperstown, and Catherine Walker of Fly Creek.

Osterhoudt, then 21, and later a 30-year mail carrier in the village, had worked on the construction crew of the just-completed Hall. Talbot, 14, was home from Manlius Military Academy. Walker, then 8 and later the mother of five, was on her father’s hand most of June 12, 1939.

Two attendees from the first Induction were also in the room: Phil Bresee, of the Oneonta department store family, and Merritt Harvey of Hartwick, who was 5 and brought to the historic event by his mother and sisters.

Talbot later joined the Hall when it only had four employees – Director Bob Quinn, formerly of the Boston Braves, his secretary Helen Tyson, a girl named Roth in the ticket booth, and the custodian, Milton Shepherd.

When Spencer joined the Hall, there were 16 employees, said emcee Bruce Markusen; today, there are 80-90 year around, plus the Steele interns and other seasonal help during summers.

Spencer also revealed

that it wasn’t until 2007 that it was determined that the Hall actually opened on July 3, 1938, not June 12, 1939, although the latter date was the first Induction.

The curator said he and researchers noticed a difference in two photos that were supposed to be from 1939.

One of them showed the building next door, the Honolulu Conservatory of Music, that wasn’t there in photos of the actual Induction; that was the tipoff.

Over the years, Coopertown has changed, too. Osterhoudt and Walker lamented the loss of the varied business district, the clothing stores, markets and restaurants. “It seemed more like our home than today,� Walker said.

Still, Talbot recalled Ford Frick, former National League president, saying, “One of the things I like about this weekend in Cooperstown is it’s a small town. It’s not commercial; it’s a small town.�

Still, some big city vices snuck in, even to the Hall.

Talbot recalled how Joe DiMaggio’s uniform was hung on a hanger in the middle of the display room, with a cap on a shelf above.

One morning, the cap was gone. Happily, the Hall had a second cap, but from then on displayed it and the uniform behind a locked mesh.

“He was a terrific student,” O’Mara, said. “There was never any question about his talent, brains and ability. And he knew he was going to work for the Yankees even though the Yankees didn’t know it.”

Appel’s smooth path to a highly desirable position with the Yankees smacks of manifest destiny. After his sophomore year, he wrote former Yankees public relations director Bob Fishel, asking simply for “a summer job.” He was then hired at a weekly salary of $100 to triage Mickey Mantle’s fan mail – Fisher having found “The Mick” to be highly remiss in writing back to his fans.

“I was in awe of Mickey Mantle and always had trouble having conversations with him,” said Appel.

Alberta Bowes, 91; Bassett Nursing Director Treated Dachau Survivors In World War II

COOPERSTOWN – Alberta Anna Bowes, 91, a former Oneonta resident and director of nursing at Bassett Hospital died Monday afternoon, June 16, 2014, at Bassett.

Born July 21, 1922, at Brady Maternity Hospital in Albany, she was the daughter of Thomas C. and Margaret (Dilts) Bowes. At 6 months, Alberta moved from Albany to Oneonta with her family.

After her war experience, she taught at Hartwick College’s School of Nursing before joining Bassett.

Alberta is survived by her beloved brother, William Morris Bowes of Cooperstown, and several cousins.

Calling hours begin at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, in St. Mary’s sanctuary. The funeral mass begins at 11 a.m., with Father John P. Rosson, pastor, officiating. Immediately following, military honors will be accorded outside the church.

Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Emmons, where Alberta will be laid to rest near her parents.

Ronald Carl Shaw; 63; ‘Teacher of the Year’ at Cherry Valley ONEONTA – Ronald (Reggie) Carl Shaw, 63, a former Cherry Valley elementary school teacher, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.

He was born June 28, 1950, in Delhi, the son of the late Carl Phillip Shaw and Grace (Dorosky) Shaw Oles.

Ron graduated from Oneonta High School in 1969. He received an Associate’s degree from Delhi College and a BA in History from SUNY Oneonta. He continued his education at SUNY, obtaining his teaching certification.

On Aug. 9, 1980, Ron married Letty Sampson at the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown.

Spike worked at the Town of Otsego Highway Department for 33 years, 18 as superintendent. He retired, then worked for five years as plant superintendent at Suit-Kote Asphalt Corp., Oneonta.

Valley-Springfield Central School for 30 years. He specialized in Math, Science, and Health, retiring in 2007.

He was once voted teacher of the year.

Ron was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed playing and watching sports, especially tennis. He developed many close friendships through the years while playing tennis at the Oneonta Tennis Club. Recently he enjoyed learning about wine and microbrewery beers. Most of all, Ron loved his family and enjoyed entertaining in his home.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta.

Ron is survived by his

wife, Letty Shaw, of Oneonta; daughter Leann (Steven) Kerr of Holly Ridge, NC; sister Bonnie Shaw (John Ronald Shaw Hartner) of Oneonta; three aunts, Betty Dean, Joan Wollaber, and Pauline Fowlston; two sisters-in-law, Susan (Royce) Livingston and Dawn (John) Knutson; one brother-in-law, Jimmy (Madeline) Sampson; nieces and nephews, Tracy Shaw, Kelly Livingston Brown, Sarah and James Livingston,

Lia Miller-Spicer, Larissa and Valerie Miller, and Jonathan, Joel, and Jason Sampson; as well as numerous cousins and friends. He will be dearly missed by his two dogs, Bella and Milo.

A funeral mass was held Friday, June 13 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. David Mickiewicz, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Alberta A. Bowes, 91; Bassett Nursing Director Treated Dachau Survivors In WWII COOPERSTOWN – Alberta Anna Bowes, retired director of nursing at Bassett Hospital who as an Army nurse during World War II treated Dachau survivors, died Monday afternoon, June 16, 2014, at Bassett . She was 91.

until October of 1944 she was a staff nurse at Fox Hospital.

On Oct. 2, 1944, Alberta joined the Army as a second lieutenant, serving her country during World War II as a general duty nurse in the Army Nurse Corps 25th Hospital Train.

Assigned to the European Theater of Operations in December 1944, she shipped out to Cherbourg, France, from Liverpool, England in January 1945.

She was assigned to Hospital Train No. 19 which carried wounded from battle areas in France to hospital ships and rehabilitation centers in southern France.

She also traveled throughout Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands, treating over 320 patients, including GIs, POWs, repatriated Allied Military personnel, as well as enemy POWs and children released from labor camps.

The week after the concentration camp at Dachau was liberated, her unit visited the camp and treated survivors. While there she saw the ovens (some of which contained half cremated remains), the gas chambers and the laboratories where human experiments were carried out.

FLY CREEK – Louie C. “Spike” Boyd, 61, of Fly Creek, former Town of Otsego highway superintendent, passed away Monday afternoon June 9, 2014, at Bassett Hospital.

A Cooperstown Native Son, he was born Aug. 13, 1952 at Bassett, the son of Louie C. and Dorothy (Harrison) Boyd, Sr. He graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1970, then from SUNY Cobleskill with an associate degree. In December 1945 she was reassigned from the hospital train to the American Hospital in Paris, France. On April 6, 1946, she was honorably discharged with the rank of first lieutenant and received two Battle Stars for the Battle of Ardennes (the Battle of the Bulge) and the Battle of the Rhineland.

Back in the States, Alberta attended the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minn., graduating with honors in 1948 with a B.Sc. in nursing education. In September, she joined the faculty at Hartwick College as an instructor in the Nursing Department.

In 1954 she left Hartwick College and moved to Detroit, Mich., where she attended Wayne State University on a graduate teaching fellowship and received her master’s in nursing education in June 1956. In July, she joined Bassett Hospital’s Nursing Administration Department.

In the mid-1970s, she conducted the feasibility study and developed SUNY Delhi’s associate degree program in nursing. In October 1972, she represented Bassett at the International Medical Education Conference in The Hague, Neth-

erlands. After many years as director of nursing, she retired on July 30, 1982.

A passionate explorer, Alberta traveled extensively throughout the world, including visits to Europe, Russua, Canada and Mexico, and experienced passage through the Panama Canal.

She also visited the Holy Land several times while her brother was there working for his company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Corp. from 1973 through 1976.

A member of St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Roman Catholic Church, Alberta was also a life member of Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 and Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

She was also a member of the alumni associations of Oneonta High School, St. Joseph’s Hospital College of Nursing, the College of St. Teresa and Wayne State University, District 15 of New York State Nurses’ Association (part of the American Nurses’ Association), Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the American Region of Women in the Military, AARP, Elderhostel, Center for Continuing

Adult Learning, Prime Time exercise group at Clark Sports Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension and the 4-H, serving as their money manager for several years at the Cooperstown office, Policy Committee for At Home Care in Oneonta and the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Delaware and Otsego Counties.

Since August 2004, she lived at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home.

Alberta is survived by her beloved brother, William Morris Bowes of Cooperstown, and several cousins.
