her. “I’d had experience with end-of-life care, but I never thought I’d have to go through it with my best friend.�

After three months with her friend by her side, Amy was regaining her strength and her doctors declared that she was in partial remission. “We’d set goals – one day to make it Dairy Queen for Peanut Butter Parfaits, another day, a trip to IKEA,� said Sara. “It was a two-hour trip, but she bought a big lounge chair.

“Amy and I talked every night,” she said.

“We prayed, read the Bible, cried together.

It was good to have someone to talk about it with.”

It was these moments that inspired O’Brien to write her book, “The Bald Headed, Tattooed, Motorcycle Mama’s Devotional Guide,” a collection of 31 daily devotionals for women facing cancer. “I want to encourage other women so they know there’s hope,” she said. “Oftentimes, there’s so much fear, worrying, anxiety, it can be overwhelming, but knowing that other people have gone through it, you feel less alone.”

The book was Amy’s idea. “I told her, ‘You write it, I hate writing’,” said Sara.

hoping for – her cancer was in remission. But that same week, Amy called to say her cancer had returned, spreading significantly. She died a month later.

But the idea of writing their book together, once passed off as a lark, stayed with Sara. “I just

felt like I had to write it — for Amy.” She contacted her brother, Chris Nelson, who maintains a writing website, for his advice on how to go about it. A paragraph in, she called him back. “This is so easy!” she said.

Sara finished the book was within weeks, and she reached out to Toni Williams of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a friend and fellow cancer survivor, to help her edit it. The title comes from Sara’s own experiences – her love of riding motorcycles with her husband, David, and the three small dots tattooed to mark where the radiation treatments are lined up.

And day by day, Sara is continuing to recover.

She got back on her motorcycle for a remission ride in August 2013, complete with a hot pink motorcycle jacket. “I was thinking, ‘This is it!

I beat cancer’!” she said.

The detailed plans Javier had drawn over previous months included a cinderblock loop around the first

floor. It was then deep winter, and he had to build a bonfire in the middle so it would be warm enough for the cement to set.

By January, though, that main building was far enough along for the electrical hookup – soon, the whir of an electrical saw replaced the growl of the chainsaw and rhythm of hand tools. “We thought we would be

In August 2007, the couple had their first cheese, a feta.

Soon, “we had enough to get a call in September from the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market.� A vendor booth had opened up. Ilyssa returned from that first Saturday with $200 in her pocket. Success!

Ellen Pope, the Otsego 2000 executive director, sees what Berg and Flores are doing as “tremendous for the county. They go to farmers’ markets, they have customers in New York City, they ship their cheese. The land they have is not ideal for cropland, but it’s ideal for goats.�

CADE Executive Director Rebecca Morgan, who is tasked with developing a food hub to ship local value-added farm products in New York City, often repeats how there is $1 billion in unmet need in Gotham, Pope said, a promising number for Ilyssa and Javier.

To hear them tell the story, their arrival on the Garrattsville hilltop was serendipitous. Ilyssa, from Nanuet, Rockland County, was doing research in Ecuador for a Cornell master’s in botany when she met Javier, who was toiling – and loving it – with five brothers on his family’s farm in Otavalo, an Andean town surrounded by three volcanos.

Three years later, Javier followed her to New York.

While she continued her postgrad studies, he began work in a cabinet factory. He felt crimped by the routine after “a full life� on the family farm. He remembers his boyhood: “I was working hard, but I was free.�

By December 2004, “we were looking for something to do with our lives,� Ilyssa said, “after getting married and trying to meld our lives together in a way that would make both of us happy and lead us both on a path, a similar path.�

turnkey operation for sale’,� she said. Ilyssa called it “an epiphany. It sounded like a good idea. It sounded like a crazy idea.�

They visited that goat farm, in the Adirondacks, it turned out, then started scouting the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. Much of Upstate, though, “was just depressing,� until they happened on Otsego County. “We went up and over (the Catskills) and we said, ‘Oh my God, look!’�

The beauty led them to Town of New Lisbon and the Mittedorf Road property, which a family in Morris was looking to sell.

As they became familiar with goat farming, the “crazy idea� started sounding “perfect,� said Ilyssa. They found “not only is it possible,� added Javier, “but� – his voice dropped to a whisper – “we could do it better.� In addition to learning architectural drawing, he also educated himself in what makes quality cheese. “When you make cheese, you have to understand, ‘my cheese is better than that one’,� he said.

Meanwhile, the couple worked on a business plan, one that would win them “a small loan� from the Otsego County Development Corp. “We kind of had blinders on,� Ilyssa says today. But to visit the couple’s farm today, you conclude that optimism was well-founded. The happily bleating goats crowd around in welcome in the big

barn, the fourth building in the green-painted complex you can see from County Route 17. The animals are rotated through 35 acres of pasture. Since the couple bought a tractor last year, two of the pastures have been tilled and reseeded, with more to follow.

The eight-goat milking stand is about to be expanded to 24. “It will save at least one hour every day for me,� said Javier. “I can spend the time in the cheese room.� The other day, the two aging caves – barricaded by two heavy wooden doors reminiscent of a Medieval monastery – in the basement were empty and pristine, waiting for the season’s cheese that will arrive shortly.

From feta, the farm expanded to chevre, the traditional French goat cheese, then a brie variation, a harder gouda-like product and ricotta. The latest product is a combination of milk and caramel, similar to Dulce de Leche, originally a Portuguese treat.

From humble beginnings that Saturday at the Cooperstown Farmers’ Market, the farm is producing 10,000 pounds of cheese a year. Since year three, the operation’s been profitable, Ilyssa said. Whenever the aging caves start to fill up and she starts to worry, someone calls to reorder or a new customer turns up. The farm sells all it can produce, across New York State and in the city. (Last year, it was served at the U.S. Open.)

Locally, Painted Goat cheeses can be found at The Otesaga, the Rose & Kettle in Cherry Valley and Brewery Ommegang’s cafe. The Leonard sisters will serve it again when they reopen Origins Cafe on Beaver Meadow Road this summer. The Green Earth in Oneonta and Cooperstown Natural Foods also carry it. “Each year, we do realize, ‘yes, it’s getting easier’,� said Ilyssa.

Incidentally, the “painted goat� is a “pintone,� a variegated animal with a white band across its middle, a member of the first herd.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on the 21st day of Jan., 2014 the Otsego County Treasurer, hereinafter the “Enforcing Officer” of Otsego County hereinafter “Tax District” pursuant to law, filed with the Otsego County Clerk a PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE against various parcels of real property for unpaid taxes.

The above captioned proceeding is hereby commenced to enforce the payment of delinquent taxes or other lawful charges which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceeding applies are identified on Schedule “A” of this Petition, which is annexed hereto and made a part hereof. This document serves both as a Petition of Foreclosure and a Notice of Foreclosure for purposes of this proceeding.

Last day for redemption: The last day for redemption is hereby fixed as the 30th day of April, 2014.

Service of answer: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in this petition may serve a duly verified answer upon the Attorney for the Tax District setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. IN MEMORIAM Barbara A. Lindberg, 66; One Of 15 Siblings ONEONTA – Barbara A. Lindberg, 66, one of 15 siblings who include county Rep. Don Lindberg, R-Worcester, and Iver Lindberg, proprietor of Springfield Tractor, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at home.

She was born Dec. 4, 1947, in Hartwick, the daughter of David A. and Dorothy H. (Jacobs) Lindberg.

Barbara was a life resident of Oneonta. She enjoyed reading. She loved her family dearly and will be greatly missed.

She is predeceased by her parents; a sister, Anna Louise Lindberg and a brother, John H Lindberg.

In addition to brothers Don (Judy) and Iver (Lillian), the latter who reside in Cooperstown, Barbara is survived by six sisters, Bonnie (Fred) Marble of Oneonta, Betty (Louie) Barnes of Mt. Vision, Susan (Ivan) Norton of Morris, Norma Jones of South Edmeston, Deborah (Walter) Stretch of Roseboom, Esther (John) Roote of Gilbertsville; four additional brothers, David (Penelope) Lindberg Jr. of West Laurens,

Frances Russell, 95; Survived 3 Husbands

ONEONTA – Frances M. Russell, 96, who survived three husbands, passed away on Friday Feb. 21, 2014, at the Fox Nursing Home.

She was born on Dec. 22, 1917, in New York City, the daughter of Joseph and Nora (DiMasi) Civita.

In 1948, Frances married Arthur Hoegger, and he predeceased her in 1962. In 1964, she married Fred Sandoli, and he predeceased her in 1989, and in 1992, she married John J. Russell, and he predeceased her in 1999.

She was a member of St. and two daughters, Tammy Mary’s Church, its Roand Matthew Retz of Mount sary Society, and the Italian Upton and Courtney and American Club.

Bret Sage of DeLancey; his father, Stanley Dibble; and two brothers, Stephen Dibble of Cortland and Roger and Delores Dibble of Hamden. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Aden Miller, Hannah Sage, Lexus Coughlin, Rachel Sage, Delaney Coughlin, Alivia Retz and Latham Retz; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his mother, Virginia Dibble of Hamden.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the First Presbyterian Church, Delhi, with the Rev. Sarah Hooker officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in Hamden Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church at 4 Clinton St., Delhi, NY 13753.

She is survived by her step-children, Gary Russell of Oriskany, Jeannine Russell of Hudson, Fla., Patricia Russell of Oneonta, Eileen Russell of Goodyear Lake and Elaine Massey of Newport Richey, Fla.; her grandchildren, several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A burial mass at St. Mary’s Church was celebrated Father Scott VanDerveer, associate pastor. Burial will be later in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Emmons.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Richard (Judy) Lindberg of Oneonta, Frank (Ruth) Lindberg of Connecticut, and Douglas Lindberg of Otego; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service at the Lewis, Hurley & Pietrobono Funeral Home, Oneonta, with the Rev. Keith VanDewerker, pastor of the Fellowship Baptist Church, officiating.

Interment will be at the Lena Cemetery in Mount Vision at later date.

Donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Lewis G. Dibble, 61; Completed Career At Delaware Operations ONEONTA – Lewis Gene Dibble, 61, a SUNY Oneonta graduate who was employed at Delaware Operations, the Oneontabased waste-water treatment company, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at his home in Delhi.

He was born on Oct. 3, 1952, in Margaretville, the son of Stanley and Virginia (Condon) Dibble of Andes.

Lou graduated from Delaware Academy in Delhi in 1970, and from SUNY Oneonta in 1974, with a degree in math education.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Gail L. Dibble (Matthews) on May 26, Lewis Dibble 1973, in Andes.

Lou was employed at Delwood Foods in Frasiers as a laborer during the summer years of college. After college his career continued at Delwood as a supervisor.

He was very involved in

the transition from a milk processing plant to a protein hydrolysate plant culminating in the construction of a new facility next door. His career there was terminated after 28 years in the position of operation manager. Upon leaving DMV International in 2001, he was employed at Delaware Operations.

He was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi serving for years as Sunday school teacher, elder, deacon and most recently as clerk of session.

Lou loved to spend time gardening both inside and out. An avid cook, he was well-known for his pickled jalapeño peppers. Through his handy work he was able to provide family and friends with the fresh and canned fruits of his labor.

Lou was an avid reader and enjoyed reading with his seven grandchildren.

He, and his wife Gail, often hosted holiday meals and family gatherings at their Delside Drive home where Lou passed on his love of cooking that he had received from his mother.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Gail L. Dibble;

She was at the scene on Nov. 10, 1961, when The Freeman’s Journal burned at the corner of Pioneer and Main. She returned home at 3 a.m., thinking the fire was out; suddenly, she heard a loud crash: The press had fallen through the floor into the basement.

Mary had a highly regarded stamp collection, which she donated to Bassett Hospital; a letter from her often bore unusual and colorful stamps going back decades, duplicates from her collection. She loved tending her flower garden, crocheting and knitting.

Mary was devoted to her faith and her church.

For 31 years she served as the parish bookkeeper and secretary for St. Mary’s, having first been hired by Father John R. Sise in 1971.

She was involved in every aspect of church, always willing to accept responsibility. She rarely missed an event or service and, over time, became a source of institutional memory for the church. “Cooperstown has lost someone who had a corporate memory,” said Father John P. Rosson, pastor, St. Mary’s “Our Lady of the Lake” Catholic Church.

“I’ve lost someone who was almost like a mother.”

ever a need arose. She was tireless and tenacious in securing pledges and contributions for the annual Bishop’s Appeal. Parishioners knew her “as ‘the bishop’s lady,” said Father Rosson, “because when she called, they knew why she was calling.”

And she was generous herself, donating the gilt-lettered sign installed in front of the church last year, as well as the new marble altar top and the Paschal candle.

She considered her 2009 trip to Rome, where she celebrated Mass in the Vatican and saw the Pope, to be a highlight of her life.

She was predeceased by her half-sisters, Stephanie Madebach of South Carolina, Anna Finnerty of New York City and Silvia Toth of Morris, who lived with her sister on Pioneer Street during her final years. She is survived by four nephews, two nieces and her beloved church family.

Calling hours and a vesper service were Monday evening, Feb. 24, followed by a funeral mass Tuesday morning, with Father Rosson and Father Andrew Cryans concelebrating.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Bishop’s Appeal of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, c/o St. Mary’s, 31 Elm St., Cooperstown, NY 13326.
