Many of the firefighters, including the Pidgeon brothers, didn’t have their full gear and were only

protected by the rubber raincoats they’d grabbed off the truck.

“When my dad came home, his pants had been burned off,” said Patrick. “He’d just come from plowing snow for the city when he got the call.”

The roar of the fire grew louder, and then changed to something like they’d never heard before.

Chief Gerald Fisher told them to get off the field. “We told him, ‘No, we got this, we’re going to keep fighting’,” recalled Joe. “He said ‘That is a direct order’.”

And then, the ground beneath them shook. “It was like a bomb going off,” he said. “There was a mushroom cloud, and everyone was knocked off their feet.”

And when they could get to their feet, the firemen ran as fast as they could to get away from the inferno. “They were fortunate that there was snow on the ground,” said Patrick. “The fire just rained down on them, and they rolled in the snow to put themselves out.”

Joe and Charles suffered burns to the back of his neck and his

hands. Another brother, Ronnie Pidgeon, spent over three months in Albany Medical Center’s burn unit.

Five tankers of propane exploded, and though no one died in the explosion, in all, 58 men were injured, including Richard Vanderwerker, who lost his arm. He died in a car accident in October 2000.

The fire burned for several days,

and when they went back to the scene, Joe said the two trucks they had left were still running. “One had a piece of boxcar wrapped around the back,” he said.

The accident helped changed how BLEVEs were handled and inspired several training videos.

“We shouldn’t have even been there,” said Joe. “Nowadays, we wouldn’t even try to fight it.”

But after the explosion from the burning propane tanks knocked the other firefighters to the ground, Althiser discovered he couldn’t get up to run away.

“Both my femurs were broken,” he said. “Something must have hit me in the back

of the leg – whatever it was, it hit so hard it drove a piece of my blue jeans in between my broken bones.”

It was only a matter of time before another propane tanker exploded.

Schenevus Firefighter Rich Kenyon ran back to his comrade’s rescue, throwing a rubber coat over him to protect him from the heat. “I grabbed his wrist

and he dragged me off the field,” said Althiser. “They took me to Fox Hospital – I wouldn’t have survived if they had taken me all the way to Bassett. My systolic blood pressure was 60, but Dr. John Spore saved my life.”

Dr. Jim Elting, then a new doctor at Fox, knew there was no saving Althiser’s left leg. He was transferred to Bassett, but after a series of attempts, the wound

became gangrenous and the leg had to be amputated. “I served in the Marines for two years and never broke a fingernail,” he joked. “Then I came back home and this happened.”

At first, his prognosis was grim. “I had some doctors telling me to get our affairs in order,” recalled Christine, his wife of 42 years. “But one doctor told me, ‘You come to the hospital looking good every night, because

you’re husband’s going to make it, and he needs you to be strong’,” she said.

Now 66, Althiser has worn a full prosthetic ever since. “I get up in the morning and I strap on half my body,” he said.

But he didn’t let that day derail his desire to serve as a fireman. After his recovery, he went back to the Worcester fire department, where he served as chief for six years. He’s retired from the

county.

He keeps a few souvenirs from the fire; buckles from his coat, the rubber long melted away, and the wallet he had in his back pocket.

“The credit cards were charred to black,” he said.

“You learn to live with what you have,” he said. “I had two choices — give up, sit in a chair and feel sorry for myself, or move ahead and do what I can. You sell your soul if give up.”

ONEONTA – Esther Pierce Nordberg, 90, died Feb. 15, 2014, at Fox Hospital from complications of leukemia.

Esther was born Sept.

2, 1923, in Lisle to Walter and Mary (Jones) Pierce.

Having graduated from Whitney Point High School Esther earned her R.N. from Wilson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Johnson City.

On Nov. 13, 1944, she married Thorman Emery Nordberg. Thor and Esther bought a home at 29 East St., where they raised their three daughters and an annual garden, and hosted many fierce horseshoe matches.

Esther and Thor shared a passion for baseball and golf, traveling to Brooklyn Dodger Stadium and Fenway Park. Each year, she made sure family vacations were educational.

Esther was predeceased by her husband, Thorman, her parents, brothers, Ken and Roger Pierce, sister, Daisy Brown, granddaughter, Kaline Winkler and son-in-law, John Delaney.

MIDDLEFIELD – Douglas John Olmstead, 88, of Middlefield, a World War II veteran who represented the town on the former Board of Supervisors, died in an auto accident Friday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2014.

He was born Dec. 13, 1925, at the Thanksgiving Hospital in Cooperstown, a son of George Abram Olmstead, Sr. and Zula M. Butler Olmstead.

Raised in Toddsville, he graduated from Cooperstown High School, Class of 1943. On Oct. 14, 1950, Doug married Rose Marie Dziergowski at the Rectory of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Cherry Valley.

Rose Marie died on July 24, 1972, at 44. He then married Esther M. Christiansen on Nov. 17, 1973, at St. Thomas Church. After 37 years of marriage, Esther died Sept. 26, 2010.

Throughout his life Doug had a talent for wood working and in his later years was self-employed as a cabinet maker. An expert with a divining rod, he was also a local dowser.

In addition to serving as supervisor, he was a charter member of the Middlefield Volunteer Fire Department and a life member of the Sgt. Walter P. Eggleston Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7128 in Cooperstown.

He enjoyed music and played the violin.

Doug is survived by his two daughters, Karen A. McMahon Gratton and her husband, Rev. Tom A.

IN MEMORIAM Elsie Wells Petri, 94; Traced Local Roots To 1793 And Revolutionary War Veteran ONEONTA – Elsa Marion Wells Petri of Oneonta, who could trace her family’s local roots to Revolutionary War veteran John Wells, who settled in the Town of Hartwick in 1793, passed away Feb. 15, 2014, at the Otsego Manor. She was 94.

She was born Jan. 8, 1920, at the Wells Homestead on Christian Hill in the Town of Hartwick, the only child of Jesse and Lula Bishop Wells.

She attended school through Grade 8 at the Eddy School House, also known as Hartwick District School No. 6. Thereafter she went to Cooperstown, graduating in the Class of 1937. She furthered her education at Brock-

port Teacher’s College, then graduated from Powelson Business School, Syracuse.

During World War II, she worked for the U.S. Flood Control Elsie Petri Agency and later for General Electric and at the office of The Leatherstocking Corp. in Cooperstown. While at Leatherstocking she met Ralph A. Petri, an employee at the Second National Bank, now Key Bank, and they were married April 12, 1952, at the First Baptist Church

in Cooperstown.

Soon after the marriage they bought a farm in Toddsville, where Brookwood School is now located, which they ran while Ralph was still working at the bank. In 1961 the bank transferred them to Hudson, and in 1965 to Oneonta.

After her marriage, Elsa became a devoted housewife and mother, giving her time to the Lord’s work. She put her family ahead of all matters, caring for her elderly parents and her husband in their old age.

She was a former member of Hartwick Grange No. 746, which she had joined at 14, and was an active member of the Oneonta Chapter of DAR as John Well’s

Louis ‘Tarry’ Brienza, 63; OHS Grad Was Health Administrator, Basketball Referee ONEONTA – Louis “Tarry” Brienza, 63, a healthcare administrator in the Albany area who was honored for officiating at high school and basketball games, passed away at home on Feb. 11, 2014, of pulmonary fibrosis with his wife and children at his side.

Tarry was born on Aug. 25, 1950, in Oneonta, the son of Louis and Betty Brienza. After graduating from OHS in 1968, he obtained an A.S. degree in respiratory therapy from Hudson Valley Community College and later a B.S. degree in hospital administration from Empire State College. He worked for many years at Bassett Hospital, first as a respiratory therapist, then as an administrator. He worked seven years in Albany before his passing.

Tarry married Deborah Ritz on April 7, 1973, to begin their 40 years of marriage. Tarry always enjoyed

his family and many happy times were spent with their children camping in Lake George and later Tarry Brienza with the grandchildren in their lovely park model R.V. near Saratoga Springs.

Tarry played catcher for the Milford Macs baseball team for several years after high school. For his work as a basketball official, he was inducted into the Schohanna Board 46 Basketball officials Hall of Fame in 2012. Deb was also a fan, and on their 25th anniversary the couple traveled to Indianapolis to attend the BIG 10 Women’s basketball tournament to cheer on their beloved Purdue Boilermakers.

In addition to his wife Deb, he is survived by his children Melanie (Tom) Craig and Kimball Brienza, his grandchildren, Hannah Rose and Dylan Thomas Craig, his sisters, Bonnie (Tom) Bowen, Andrea (Chuck) Sawyer, Toni (Lil) Brienza, and Tammy (Kurt) Dean, his father-in-law Don (Elsie) Ritz, brother-in-law Jack (Marge) Ritz, an aunt, Louise Puylara, and several nieces and nephews.

Tarry was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister Deborah Loeser and a very special aunt, Rose Pallace.

A memorial service was Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home.

Norma McBride, 77; Played Sax, Clarinet in City Bands ONEONTA – Norma McBride, 77, who played music throughout Oneonta, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Bassett Hospital.

She was born June 30, 1936, at Fox Hospital, the daughter of the late Albert and Madeleine (Kuster) Erdmann.

Norma worked in dress factories in Oneonta for more than 40 years. She retired in 1999 from Sanyo.

She was a musician, playing saxophone and clarinet,

in several local bands for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed reading, doing jig-saw puzzles Norma and plastic McBride canvas.

Surviving is her daughter, Mary McBride-Froh and her husband, Christopher Froh;

two grandchildren, Tyler and Katelyn Froh; one brother, John Goodrich, all of Oneonta.

She was predeceased by her husband, John McBride.

At Norma’s request there will be no calling hours or funeral services.

Rodney E. Johnson; Historic Preservationist MIDDLEFIELD – Rodney E. Johnson, historic preservationist and United Methodist minister, died at his Middlefield home on Feb. 14, 2014. He was 85.

He was born on Nov. 6, 1928, in Fulton, N.Y., the eldest of two sons of Erwin R. Johnson and Kittie Ferguson Johnson. He graduated from Fulton High School in 1947 and SUNY Oswego, later doing graduate work at Oswego, Oneonta, Saint Rose, Albany and Boston University.

After Rod married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Jeanne Walker, they moved to the old Sutton Farmhouse at Sutton’s Corners in Oswego County.

They restored the house in the 1950s, naming it Mulberry Hill. For a short time, he was curator of Fort Ontario and they lived in the former lighthouse keeper’s cottage across from the fort.

In 1963, they relocated to the hamlet of Middlefield, near Cooperstown. The couple worked to preserve and restore several early Middlefield buildings, most importantly their 18th century home, the Joshua Pinney Tavern, well-known for its beautiful wall murals featured in several authoritative books on this topic.

During the span of his 20-year teaching career he taught History, English and Special Education. He is fondly remembered by many former students who were inspired by his high standards He was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1969. For 37 years, he pastored United Methodist churches at McDonough, Preston, Willet, West Davenport, Davenport, Emmons and Cooperstown Junction.

In 1981, following their passion for preservation, the Johnsons opened Leatherstocking Realty, which specialized in the pairing of historic houses with enthusiastic preservationists.

Mr. Johnson was a past president of Otsego-Delaware Board of Realtors, twice served as chair for the Otsego-Delaware Multiple Listing service, and was once director of the Real Estate Board as well.

As president of the Town of Middlefield Historical Association for five years, he was instrumental in securing the Middlefield District Number One Schoolhouse as the organization’s headquarters.

In keeping with his interests in preservation, Rod helped create the Middlefield Zoning Board of Appeals, resulting in the current zoning laws that have helped preserve the heritage of the community at large.

He was a master mason and member of Otsego Lodge No. 138, Free & Accepted Masons. It should be noted that the third floor of the Pinney Tavern was well documented as an early meeting hall for the Masonic Brothers, known as The Widow’s Son Lodge No. 391, chartered in 1824.

The Johnsons, along with a small group of residents, worked tirelessly to have the hamlet of Middlefield designated an Historic District on the State and National Registries; they were successful in this endeavor in the mid 1980s.

For many years, people enjoyed visiting with Rod and Jeanne at their antique store, The Village Peddler, where they shared their love of antiques and their vast knowledge of local history

with store visitors. This early building, at the crossroads of Middlefield, had been slated for demolition before Rod and Jeanne took on the mammoth restoration project to preserve the Middlefield landmark as it stands today.

Rod was predeceased by a son, Kevin Johnson, his brother, Roy Johnson, and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Jeanne.

Surviving are his daughter, Karen Rury (Edward) and their children, Sarah, Jessica (Jason) and Jonathan (Maura); his daughter, Kittie Johnson (Mr. Blair Campbell); his son Mark Johnson (Gina) and children Matthew Carr (Heather), Benjamin and Samuel; his son, Seth Johnson (Doreen) and their children, Jessica, Scott (Amanda) and Weston.

He is survived by a greatgranddaughter, Cameran Flint, and five great-grandsons, Elliot and Aidan Rury; Nathan Rury; and Gabriel and Logan Johnson.

Rod was a person who possessed many fine qualities. He was loved dearly by his family and friends. He was versatile and talented, whether building stone walls, tending his honey bees or playing checkers with his grandson … all the time running on High Octane Coffee!
